Ingenious Structure Engineering to Enhance Piezoelectricity in Poly(vinylidene fluoride) for Biomedical Applications

The future development of wearable/implantable sensing and medical devices relies on substrates with excellent flexibility, stability, biocompatibility, and self-powered capabilities. Enhancing the energy efficiency and convenience is crucial, and converting external mechanical energy into electrical energy is a promising strategy for long-term advancement. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), known for its piezoelectricity, is an outstanding representative of an electroactive polymer. Ingeniously designed PVDF-based polymers have been fabricated as piezoelectric devices for various applications. Notably, the piezoelectric performance of PVDF-based platforms is determined by their structural characteristics at different scales. This Review highlights how researchers can strategically engineer structures on microscopic, mesoscopic, and macroscopic scales. We discuss advanced research on PVDF-based piezoelectric platforms with diverse structural designs in biomedical sensing, disease diagnosis, and treatment. Ultimately, we try to give perspectives for future development trends of PVDF-based piezoelectric platforms in biomedicine, providing valuable insights for further research.

Recent Progress on Flexible Self-Powered Tactile Sensing Platforms for Health Monitoring and Robotics

Over the past decades, tactile sensing technology has made significant advances in the fields of health monitoring and robotics. Compared to conventional sensors, self-powered tactile sensors do not require an external power source to drive, which makes the entire system more flexible and lightweight. Therefore, they are excellent candidates for mimicking the tactile perception functions for wearable health monitoring and ideal electronic skin (e-skin) for intelligent robots. Herein, the working principles, materials, and device fabrication strategies of various self-powered tactile sensing platforms are introduced first. Then their applications in health monitoring and robotics are presented. Finally, the future prospects of self-powered tactile sensing systems are discussed.

Composite Nanoarchitectonics of Electrospun Piezoelectric PVDF/AgNPs for Biomedical Applications, Including Breast Cancer Treatment

This study focused on preparing composite nanomats by incorporating silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers through the electrospinning process. A short review of piezoelectric PVDF-related research is presented. PVDF is known for its biocompatibility and piezoelectric properties. Since electrical signals in biological tissues have been shown to be relevant for therapeutic applications, the influence of the addition of AgNPs to PVDF on its piezoelectricity is studied, due to the ability of AgNPs to increase the piezoelectric signal, along with providing antibacterial properties. The prepared samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. In addition, the biological activity of composites was examined using a cytotoxicity assay and an assessment of the antibacterial activity. The obtained results show that the incorporation of AgNPs into PVDF nanofibers further enhances the piezoelectricity (crystalline β-phase fraction), already improved by the electrospinning process, compared to solution-casted samples, but only with a AgNPs/PVDF concentration of up to 0.3%; a further increase in the nanoparticles led to a β-phase reduction. The cytotoxicity assay showed a promising effect of PVDF/AgNPs nanofibers on the MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line, following the non-toxicity displayed in regard to the healthy MRC-5 cell line. The antibacterial effect of PVDF/AgNPs nanofibers showed promising antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, as a result of the Ag content. The anticancer activity, combined with the electrical properties of nanofibers, presents new possibilities for smart, multifunctional materials for cancer treatment development.

High output flexible polyvinylidene fluoride based piezoelectric device incorporating cellulose nanofibers/BaTiO3@TiO2 piezoelectric core-shell structure

Flexible composite film has gained increasing attention in the fields of wearable devices and portable electronic products. In this work, a novel core-shell structure of cellulose nanofibers/BaTiO3@TiO2 (CNF/BTO@TiO2) was synthesized with the assistant of the biological macromolecule material of cellulose nanofiber (CNF), in which the CNF can improve the stability and dispersibility of BaTiO3 (BTO) in the aqueous phase and elevate the integrity of the core-shell structure. The core-shell structure can reduce the agglomeration of fillers in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and improve the structural defects of the composite film. Meanwhile, the core-shell structure can promote the polarization of the electric dipole and the formation of β phase in PVDF due to the generated interface spatial polarization between the shell of TiO2 and the core of BTO. When the content of the core-shell structure was 5 wt%, the β phase content reaches 61.89 %, and the piezoelectric coefficient of composite film reaches 84.29 pm/V. Thus the maximum output open-circuit voltage (VOC) and short-circuit current (ISC) of the piezoelectric composite film is as high as 13.10 V and 464.3 nA. In addition, its excellent pressure sensing capability allows for its application in various flexible electronic devices.

Alternatives to Fluoropolymers for Motion-Based Energy Harvesting: Perspectives on Piezoelectricity, Triboelectricity, Ferroelectrets, and Flexoelectricity

Fluoropolymers, including polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, Teflon), polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF), and fluorine kautschuk materials (FKMs, Viton) are critical polymers for applications ranging from non-stick coatings, corrosion resistant seals, semiconductor manufacturing, membranes, and energy harvesting technologies. However, the synthesis of these fluoropolymers requires the use of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) known colloquially as "forever chemicals," and as such there is a pressing need to develop alternative technologies that can serve the end-use of fluoropolymers without the environmental cost of using PFAS. Further, fluoropolymers themselves fall under the PFAS umbrella. Here, alternative mechanical-to-electrical energy harvesting polymers are reviewed and benchmarked against the leading fluoropolymer energy harvesters. These alternative technologies include nonfluoropolymer piezoelectric polymers, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), ferroelectric elastomers, and flexoelectric polymers. A vision towards sustainable, non-fluoropolymer-based energy harvesting is provided.

Advancements in Flexible Nanogenerators: Polyvinylidene Fluoride-Based Nanofiber Utilizing Electrospinning

With the gradual miniaturization of electronic devices and the increasing interest in wearable devices, flexible microelectronics is being actively studied. Owing to the limitations of existing battery systems corresponding to miniaturization, there is a need for flexible alternative power sources. Accordingly, energy harvesting from surrounding environmental systems using fluorinated polymers with piezoelectric properties has received significant attention. Among them, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and PVDF co-polymers have been researched as representative organo-piezoelectric materials because of their excellent piezoelectric properties, mechanical flexibility, thermal stability, and light weight. Electrospinning is an effective method for fabricating nanofibrous meshes with superior surface-to-volume ratios from polymer solutions. During electrospinning, the polymer solution is subjected to mechanical stretching and in situ poling, corresponding to an external strong electric field. Consequently, the fraction of the piezoelectric β-phase in PVDF can be improved by the electrospinning process, and enhanced harvesting output can be realized. An overview of electrospun piezoelectric fibrous meshes composed of PVDF or PVDF co-polymers to be utilized is presented, and the recent progress in enhancement methods for harvesting output, such as fiber alignment, doping with various nanofillers, and coaxial fibers, is discussed. Additionally, other applications of these meshes as sensors are reviewed.

Self-Poled Piezoelectric Nanocomposite Fiber Sensors for Wireless Monitoring of Physiological Signals

Self-powered sensors have the potential to enable real-time health monitoring without contributing to the ever-growing demand for energy. Piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) respond to mechanical deformations to produce electrical signals, imparting a sensing capability without external power sources. Textiles conform to the human body and serve as an interactive biomechanical energy harvesting and sensing medium without compromising comfort. However, the textile-based PENG fabrication process is complex and lacks scalability, making these devices impractical for mass production. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of a long-length PENG fiber compatible with industrial-scale manufacturing. The thermal drawing process enables the one-step fabrication of self-poled MoS2-poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanocomposite fiber devices integrated with electrodes. Heat and stress during thermal drawing and MoS2 nanoparticle addition facilitate interfacial polarization and dielectric modulation to enhance the output performance. The fibers show a 57 and 70% increase in the output voltage and current compared to the pristine PVDF fiber, respectively, at a considerably low MoS2 loading of 3 wt %. The low Young's modulus of the outer cladding ensures an effective stress transfer to the piezocomposite domain and allows minute motion detection. The flexible fibers demonstrate wireless, self-powered physiological sensing and biomotion analysis capability. The study aims to guide the large-scale production of highly sensitive integrated fibers to enable textile-based and plug-and-play wearable sensors.

Valorization of Seafood Waste for Food Packaging Development

Packaging plays a crucial role in protecting food by providing excellent mechanical properties as well as effectively blocking water vapor, oxygen, oil, and other contaminants. The low degradation of widely used petroleum-based plastics leads to environmental pollution and poses health risks. This has drawn interest in renewable biopolymers as sustainable alternatives. The seafood industry generates significant waste that is rich in bioactive substances like chitin, chitosan, gelatins, and alginate, which can replace synthetic polymers in food packaging. Although biopolymers offer biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity, their films often lack mechanical and barrier properties compared with synthetic polymer films. This comprehensive review discusses the chemical structure, characteristics, and extraction methods of biopolymers derived from seafood waste and their usage in the packaging area as reinforcement or base materials to guide researchers toward successful plastics replacement and commercialization. Our review highlights recent advancements in improving the thermal durability, mechanical strength, and barrier properties of seafood waste-derived packaging, explores the mechanisms behind these improvements, and briefly mentions the antimicrobial activities and mechanisms gained from these biopolymers. In addition, the remaining challenges and future directions for using seafood waste-derived biopolymers for packaging are discussed. This review aims to guide ongoing efforts to develop seafood waste-derived biopolymer films that can ultimately replace traditional plastic packaging.

Advances in electroactive biomaterials: Through the lens of electrical stimulation promoting bone regeneration strategy

The regenerative capacity of bone is indispensable for growth, given that accidental injury is almost inevitable. Bone regenerative capacity is relevant for the aging population globally and for the repair of large bone defects after osteotomy (e.g., following removal of malignant bone tumours). Among the many therapeutic modalities proposed to bone regeneration, electrical stimulation has attracted significant attention owing to its economic convenience and exceptional curative effects, and various electroactive biomaterials have emerged. This review summarizes the current knowledge and progress regarding electrical stimulation strategies for improving bone repair. Such strategies range from traditional methods of delivering electrical stimulation via electroconductive materials using external power sources to self-powered biomaterials, such as piezoelectric materials and nanogenerators. Electrical stimulation and osteogenesis are related via bone piezoelectricity. This review examines cell behaviour and the potential mechanisms of electrostimulation via electroactive biomaterials in bone healing, aiming to provide new insights regarding the mechanisms of bone regeneration using electroactive biomaterials.

The translational potential of this article

This review examines the roles of electroactive biomaterials in rehabilitating the electrical microenvironment to facilitate bone regeneration, addressing current progress in electrical biomaterials and the mechanisms whereby electrical cues mediate bone regeneration. Interactions between osteogenesis-related cells and electroactive biomaterials are summarized, leading to proposals regarding the use of electrical stimulation-based therapies to accelerate bone healing.

Preparation of Al@FTCS/P(VDF-HFP) Composite Energetic Materials and Their Reaction Properties

Strengthening the interfacial contact between the reactive components effectively boosts the energy release of energetic materials. In this study, we aimed to create a close-knit interfacial contact condition between aluminum nanoparticles (Al NPs) and Polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (P(VDF-HFP)) through hydrolytic adsorption and assembling 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-Perfluorododecyltrichlorosilane (FTCS) on the surface of Al NPs. Leveraging hydrogen bonding between -CF and -CH and the interaction between C-F⋯F-C groups, the adsorbed FTCS directly leads to the growth of the P(VDF-HFP) coating layer around the treated Al NPs, yielding Al@FTCS/P(VDF-HFP) energetic composites. In comparison with the ultrasonically processed Al/P(VDF-HFP) mixture, thermal analysis reveals that Al@FTCS/P(VDF-HFP) exhibits a 57 °C lower reaction onset temperature and a 1646 J/g increase in heat release. Associated combustion tests demonstrate a 52% shorter ignition delay, 62% shorter combustion time, and a 288% faster pressurization rate. These improvements in energetic characteristics stem from the reactivity activation of FTCS towards Al NPs by the etching effect to the surface Al2O3. Moreover, enhanced interfacial contact facilitated by the FTCS-directed growth of P(VDF-HFP) around Al NPs further accelerates the whole reaction process.

Piezoelectric Outputs of Electrospun PVDF Web as Full-Textile Sensor at Different Mechanical Excitation Frequencies

With the increasing application of electrospun PVDF webs in piezoelectric sensors and energy-harvesting devices, it is crucial to understand their responses under complex mechanical excitations. However, the dependence of the piezoelectric effect on mechanical excitation properties is not fully comprehended. This study aims to investigate the piezoelectric output of randomly oriented electrospun PVDF nanofiber webs fabricated through different electrospinning processes at various mechanical excitation frequencies. The electrospun PVDF web was sandwiched between two textile electrodes, and its piezoelectric output as a full-textile sensor was measured across a frequency range from 0.1 Hz to 10 Hz. The experimental results revealed that the piezoelectric output of the electrospun PVDF web exhibited a nearly linear increase at excitation frequencies below 1.0 Hz and then reached an almost constant value thereafter up to 10 Hz, which is different from the hybrid PVDF or its copolymer web. Furthermore, the dependency of the piezoelectric output on the excitation frequency was found to be influenced by the specific electrospinning process employed, which determined the crystalline structure of electrospun PVDF nanofibers. These findings suggest that determining an appropriate working frequency for randomly oriented electrospun PVDF nanofiber webs is essential before practical implementation, and the piezoelectric response mode in different mechanical activation frequency ranges can be used to detect different human physiological behaviors.

Polydopamine-mediated immobilization of BMP-2 onto electrospun nanofibers enhances bone regeneration

Dealing with bone defects is a significant challenge to global health. Electrospinning in bone tissue engineering has emerged as a solution to this problem. In this study, we designed a PVDF-b-PTFE block copolymer by incorporating TFE, which induced a phase shift in PVDF fromαtoβ, thereby enhancing the piezoelectric effect. Utilizing the electrospinning process, we not only converted the material into a film with a significant surface area and high porosity but also intensified the piezoelectric effect. Then we used polydopamine to immobilize BMP-2 onto PVDF-b-PTFE electrospun nanofibrous membranes, achieving a controlled release of BMP-2. The scaffold's characters were examined using SEM and XRD. To assess its osteogenic effectsin vitro, we monitored the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells on the fibers, conducted ARS staining, and measured the expression of osteogenic genes.In vivo, bone regeneration effects were analyzed through micro-CT scanning and HE staining. ELISA assays confirmed that the sustained release of BMP-2 can be maintained for at least 28 d. SEM images and CCK-8 results demonstrated enhanced cell viability and improved adhesion in the experimental group. Furthermore, the experimental group exhibited more calcium nodules and higher expression levels of osteogenic genes, including COL-I, OCN, and RUNX2. HE staining and micro-CT scans revealed enhanced bone tissue regeneration in the defective area of the PDB group. Through extensive experimentation, we evaluated the scaffold's effectiveness in augmenting osteoblast proliferation and differentiation. This study emphasized the potential of piezoelectric PVDF-b-PTFE nanofibrous membranes with controlled BMP-2 release as a promising approach for bone tissue engineering, providing a viable solution for addressing bone defects.

Enhanced Electroactive Phases of Poly(vinylidene Fluoride) Fibers for Tissue Engineering Applications

Nanofibrous materials generated through electrospinning have gained significant attention in tissue regeneration, particularly in the domain of bone reconstruction. There is high interest in designing a material resembling bone tissue, and many scientists are trying to create materials applicable to bone tissue engineering with piezoelectricity similar to bone. One of the prospective candidates is highly piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), which was used for fibrous scaffold formation by electrospinning. In this study, we focused on the effect of PVDF molecular weight (180,000 g/mol and 530,000 g/mol) and process parameters, such as the rotational speed of the collector, applied voltage, and solution flow rate on the properties of the final scaffold. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy allows for determining the effect of molecular weight and processing parameters on the content of the electroactive phases. It can be concluded that the higher molecular weight of the PVDF and higher collector rotational speed increase nanofibers' diameter, electroactive phase content, and piezoelectric coefficient. Various electrospinning parameters showed changes in electroactive phase content with the maximum at the applied voltage of 22 kV and flow rate of 0.8 mL/h. Moreover, the cytocompatibility of the scaffolds was confirmed in the culture of human adipose-derived stromal cells with known potential for osteogenic differentiation. Based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that PVDF scaffolds may be taken into account as a tool in bone tissue engineering and are worth further investigation.

Polymer Nanocomposite Sensors with Improved Piezoelectric Properties through Additive Manufacturing

Additive manufacturing (AM) technology has recently seen increased utilization due to its versatility in using functional materials, offering a new pathway for next-generation conformal electronics in the smart sensor field. However, the limited availability of polymer-based ultraviolet (UV)-curable materials with enhanced piezoelectric properties necessitates the development of a tailorable process suitable for 3D printing. This paper investigates the structural, thermal, rheological, mechanical, and piezoelectric properties of a newly developed sensor resin material. The polymer resin is based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as a matrix, mixed with constituents enabling UV curability, and boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) are added to form a nanocomposite resin. The results demonstrate the successful micro-scale printability of the developed polymer and nanocomposite resins using a liquid crystal display (LCD)-based 3D printer. Additionally, incorporating BNNTs into the polymer matrix enhanced the piezoelectric properties, with an increase in the voltage response by up to 50.13%. This work provides new insights for the development of 3D printable flexible sensor devices and energy harvesting systems.

Revealing an important role of piezoelectric polymers in nervous-tissue regeneration: A review

Nerve injuries pose a drastic threat to nerve mobility and sensitivity and lead to permanent dysfunction due to low regenerative capacity of mature neurons. The electrical stimuli that can be provided by electroactive materials are some of the most effective tools for the formation of soft tissues, including nerves. Electric output can provide a distinctly favorable bioelectrical microenvironment, which is especially relevant for the nervous system. Piezoelectric biomaterials have attracted attention in the field of neural tissue engineering owing to their biocompatibility and ability to generate piezoelectric surface charges. In this review, an outlook of the most recent achievements in the field of piezoelectric biomaterials is described with an emphasis on piezoelectric polymers for neural tissue engineering. First, general recommendations for the design of an optimal nerve scaffold are discussed. Then, specific mechanisms determining nerve regeneration via piezoelectric stimulation are considered. Activation of piezoelectric responses via natural body movements, ultrasound, and magnetic fillers is also examined. The use of magnetoelectric materials in combination with alternating magnetic fields is thought to be the most promising due to controllable reproducible cyclic deformations and deep tissue permeation by magnetic fields without tissue heating. In vitro and in vivo applications of nerve guidance scaffolds and conduits made of various piezopolymers are reviewed too. Finally, challenges and prospective research directions regarding piezoelectric biomaterials promoting nerve regeneration are discussed. Thus, the most relevant scientific findings and strategies in neural tissue engineering are described here, and this review may serve as a guideline both for researchers and clinicians.

Unveiling the Dual-Enhancing Mechanisms of Kinetically Controlled Silver Nanoparticles on Piezoelectric PVDF Nanofibers for Optimized SERS Performance

Noble metal nanoparticle (NMP)-based composite substrates have garnered significant attention as a highly promising technique for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in diverse scientific disciplines because their remarkable ability to amplify and functionalize Raman signals has positioned them as valuable tools for molecular detection. However, optimizing the size and distribution of NMPs has not received sufficient emphasis because of challenges associated with the precise control of deposition and the modulation of reducing rates during growth. In this research, we achieved the optimized size and spatial patterns of AgNWs on electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofibers by utilizing a polydopamine (PDA) layer as a mild and controllable reduction mediator, by which the size and density of the AgNWs could be relatively precisely manipulated, achieving a dense distribution of effective "hot spots". On the other hand, harnessing the inherent piezoelectric properties of the electrospun PVDF nanofibers further boosted the LSPR effect during the SERS test, forming a flexible dual-enhancing composite SERS substrate with excellent sensitivity. In addition to addressing structural aspects, exploiting synergistic systems capable of transferring external energy or forces to enhance the SERS performances presents a compelling avenue to broaden the practical applications of SERS. The dual-enhanced substrate achieved an exceptional enhancement factor (EF) of 1.05 × 108 and a low detection limit (LOD) of 10-10 M during the SERS test. This study focuses on integrating NMPs with electrospun piezoelectric polymer nanofibers to develop a dual-enhancing SERS substrate with excellent sensitivity and practicality. The findings provide valuable insights into controllably depositing NMPs on electrospun polymer fibers and hold significant implications for the development of highly sensitive and practical SERS substrates across various applications.

Biomimetic dual sensing polymer nanocomposite for biomedical applications

There is a growing need for sensing materials that can provide multiple sensing capabilities for wearable devices, implantable sensors, and diagnostics tools. As complex human physiology requires materials that can simultaneously detect and respond to slow and fast pressure fluctuations. Mimicking the slow adaptive (SA) and fast adaptive (FA) mechanoreceptors in skin can lead to the development of dual sensing electrospun polymer nanocomposites for biomedical applications. These dual sensing nanocomposites can provide simultaneous sensing of both slow and fast pressure fluctuations, making them ideal for applications such as monitoring vital signs, detecting a wider range of movements and pressures. Here we develop a novel dual sensing PVDF-HFP-based nanocomposite that combines the advantages of capacitive and piezoelectric properties through controling electrospinning environment and processing parameters, polymer solution composition, and addition of nucleating agents such as Carbon Black (CB) to enhance the crystalline development of β-phase, fibre thickness, and morphology. The developed PVDF-HFP/CB nanocomposite presents and response to both slow and fast pressure fluctuations with high capacitance (5.37 nF) and output voltage (1.51 V) allowing for accurate and reliable measurements.

Hybrid Piezoelectric/Triboelectric Wearable Nanogenerator Based on Stretchable PVDF-PDMS Composite Films

Hybrid piezoelectric/triboelectric nanogenerators combine the merits of piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) and triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), possessing enhanced electrical output and sensitivity. However, the structures of the majority of hybrid nanogenerators are rather complex in integrating both functions, limiting their practical application in wearable electronics. Herein, we propose to construct a piezoelectric/triboelectric hybrid nanogenerator (PT-NG) with a simple structure based on a composite film to simultaneously achieve the coupling of piezoelectric charge generation and triboelectrification with improved energy conversion efficiency. The composite film consists of electrospun PVDF nanofibers embedded in the surface of the PDMS film, which not only forms a rough nanomorphology on the surface of PDMS but also provides structural protection to the PVDF nanofibers by PDMS during compressive deformation. The results have shown that the PT-NG can generate much higher electrical outputs than individual TENG and PENG devices. The PT-NG devices exhibit a high level of mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion efficiency with superior performance in charging capacitors and functioning as self-powered wearable sensors for the detection of different signals from finger movement, the recognition of various gestures, and the monitoring of respiration. More importantly, the composite device possesses an impressive structure durability, maintaining its layered structure over 5000 testing cycles without noticing any obvious damage on the nanofibers or detachment between the layers. Our results have demonstrated that the combining of piezoelectric nanofibers and triboelectric substrate is an efficient way to fabricate highly efficient energy harvesting devices for intelligent identification and health monitoring.

Flexible Film Bulk Acoustic Wave Filter Based on Poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluorethylene)

Poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluorethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) has promising potential applications in radio-frequency filters due to their excellent piezoelectric properties, flexibility, and stability. In this paper, a flexible film bulk acoustic wave filter is investigated based on P(VDF-TrFE) as piezoelectric film. A new method based on three-step annealing is developed to efficiently remove the porosity inside the P(VDF-TrFE) films so as to improve its properties. The obtained film achieved high β-phase content beyond 80% and a high piezoelectric coefficient of 27.75 pm/V. Based on the low porosity β-phase films, a flexible wide-band RF filter is designed, which consists of a bulk acoustic wave resonator and lumped inductor-capacitor elements as a hybrid configuration. The resonator sets the filter's center frequency, while the lumped LC-based matching network extends the bandwidth and enhances out-of-band rejection. The testing results of the proposed wide-band filter show its good performance, with 12.5% fractional bandwidth and an insertion loss of 3.1 dB. To verify the possibility of folding and stacking the flexible bulk acoustic wave devices for high-density multi-filter integration in MIMO communication, bending tests of the filter are also conducted with the bending strain range up to 5500 με. The testing results show no noticeable performance degradation after four bending cycles. This work demonstrates the potential of β-phase P(VDF-TrFE) bulk acoustic wave filters to expand the scope of future flexible radio-frequency filter applications.

Review of Piezoelectric Properties and Power Output of PVDF and Copolymer-Based Piezoelectric Nanogenerators

The highest energy conversion efficiencies are typically shown by lead-containing piezoelectric materials, but the harmful environmental impacts of lead and its toxicity limit future use. At the bulk scale, lead-based piezoelectric materials have significantly higher piezoelectric properties when compared to lead-free piezoelectric materials. However, at the nanoscale, the piezoelectric properties of lead-free piezoelectric material can be significantly larger than the bulk scale. The piezoelectric properties of Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) lead-free piezoelectric nanomaterials are reviewed and their suitability for use in piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) is determined. The impact of different PVDF/PVDF-TrFE composite structures on power output is explained. Strategies to improve the power output are given. Overall, this review finds that PVDF/PVDF-TrFE can have significantly increased piezoelectric properties at the nanoscale. However, these values are still lower than lead-free ceramics at the nanoscale. If the sole goal in developing a lead-free PENG is to maximize output power, lead-free ceramics at the nanoscale should be considered. However, lead-free ceramics are brittle, and thus encapsulation of lead-free ceramics in PVDF is a way to increase the flexibility of these PENGs. PVDF/PVDF-TrFE offers the advantage of being nontoxic and biocompatible, which is useful for many applications.

Design and Experimental Evaluation of a Dual-Cantilever Piezoelectric Film Sensor with a Broadband Response and High Sensitivity

Cantilever-beam-type PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride) piezoelectric film sensors are commonly utilized for vibration signal detection due to their simple structures and ease of processing. Traditional cantilevered PVDF piezoelectric film sensors are susceptible to the influence of the second-order vibration mode and have a low lateral stress distribution at the free end, which limit their measurement bandwidth and sensitivity. This study is on the design of a dual-cantilever PVDF piezoelectric film sensor based on the principle of cantilevered piezoelectric film sensors. The results of the experiments indicate that, compared to a typical single-arm piezoelectric cantilever beam vibration sensor, the developed sensor has a longer second-order natural frequency that ranges from 112 Hz to 453 Hz, while the first-order natural frequency is maintained at around 12 Hz. This leads to a better ratio of the second-order natural frequency to the first-order natural frequency and a wider frequency response range. At the same time, the sensitivity is increased by a factor of 3.48.

Statistical Modeling and Optimization of Electrospinning for Improved Morphology and Enhanced β-Phase in Polyvinylidene Fluoride Nanofibers

The fabrication of PVDF-based nanofiber mats with enhanced β-phase using electrospinning and post processing was optimized using Taguchi design methodology. The parameters studied include the concentration of PVDF in the DMF (Dimethylformamide) solvent, applied voltage, flow rate, and drum speed. A reliable statistical model was obtained for the fabrication of bead-free PVDF nanofibers with a high fraction of β-phase (F(β)%). The validity of this model was verified through comprehensive regression analysis. The optimized electrospinning parameters were determined to be a 23 wt% PVDF solution, 20 kV voltage, a flow rate of 1 mL/h, and a drum speed of 1200 revolutions per minute.

Piezoelectric nanogenerators for self-powered wearable and implantable bioelectronic devices

One of the recent innovations in the field of personalized healthcare is the piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) for various clinical applications, including self-powered sensors, drug delivery, tissue regeneration etc. Such innovations are perceived to potentially address some of the unmet clinical needs, e.g., limited life-span of implantable biomedical devices (e.g., pacemaker) and replacement related complications. To this end, the generation of green energy from biomechanical sources for wearable and implantable bioelectronic devices gained considerable attention in the scientific community. In this perspective, this article provides a comprehensive state-of-the-art review on the recent developments in the processing, applications and associated concerns of piezoelectric materials (synthetic/biological) for personalized healthcare applications. In particular, this review briefly discusses the concepts of piezoelectric energy harvesting, piezoelectric materials (ceramics, polymers, nature-inspired), and the various applications of piezoelectric nanogenerators, such as, self-powered sensors, self-powered pacemakers, deep brain stimulators etc. Important distinction has been made in terms of the potential clinical applications of PENGs, either as wearable or implantable bioelectronic devices. While discussing the potential applications as implantable devices, the biocompatibility of the several hybrid devices using large animal models is summarized. This review closes with the futuristic vision of integrating data science approaches in developmental pipeline of PENGs as well as clinical translation of the next generation PENGs. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) hold great promise for transforming personalized healthcare through self-powered sensors, drug delivery systems, and tissue regeneration. The limited battery life of implantable devices like pacemakers presents a significant challenge, leading to complications from repititive surgeries. To address such a critical issue, researchers are focusing on generating green energy from biomechanical sources to power wearable and implantable bioelectronic devices. This comprehensive review critically examines the latest advancements in synthetic and nature-inspired piezoelectric materials for PENGs in personalized healthcare. Moreover, it discusses the potential of piezoelectric materials and data science approaches to enhance the efficiency and reliability of personalized healthcare devices for clinical applications.

Enhancing the Piezoelectric Properties of 3D Printed PVDF Using Concurrent Torsional Shear Strain

Extrusion-based polymer 3D printing induces shear strains within the material, influencing its rheological and mechanical properties. In materials like polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF), these strains stretch polymer chains, leading to increased crystallinity and improved piezoelectric properties. This study demonstrates a 400% enhancement in the piezoelectric property of extrusion-printed PVDF by introducing additional shear strains during the printing process. The continuous torsional shear strains, imposed via a rotating extrusion nozzle, results in additional crystalline β-phases, directly impacting the piezoelectric behavior of the printed parts. The effect of the nozzle's rotational speed on the amount of β-phase formation is characterized using FTIR. This research introduces a new direction in the development of polymer and composite 3D printing, where in-process shear strains are used to control the alignment of polymer chains and/or in-fill phases and the overall properties of printed parts.

Unleashing the piezoelectric potential of PVDF: a study on phase transformation from gamma (γ) to beta (β) phase through thermal contact poling

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is known for its piezoelectric properties. This material has different crystalline phases, alpha (α), beta (β) and gamma (γ), where the β-phase, in particular, is related to the piezoelectric behavior of PVDF. While the transformation from the α-phase to β-phase in PVDF is well-documented and widely studied, the transformation from γ- to β-phase has not yet been fully explored. However, when PVDF is produced by certain solution-based methods it can adopt its γ-form, which is not as piezoelectric as the β-phase. Hence, this study aims to bridge this gap by investigating the transformation from γ- to β-phase in PVDF nanocomposites films obtained from solution-based techniques. Our PVDF nanocomposite is made by solvent evaporation-assisted 3D printing of PVDF's nanocomposite with barium-titanate nanoparticles (BTO). To achieve the γ- to β-phase transformation, we first highlight the importance of annealing in the successful poling of PVDF samples. We then perform an in-depth analysis of the α-, β- and γ-crystallographic phases of PVDF-BTO using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). We observed that after annealing but before poling, the PVDF-BTO nanocomposite contains 76% of β + γ phases, the majority of which is the γ-phase. Poling of these samples resulted in the combination of the β + γ phases reaching 93% with the appearance of 40% of absolute fraction of the β-phase. We then demonstrated that the fraction of β-phase in the nanocomposite - as indicated by the 1275 cm-1 peak in PVDF's FTIR spectra - is not uniform on the surface area of the film. Additionally, the value of the absolute β-phase content also depends on the poling field's direction. Our work reveals that while considering PVDF's piezoelectric behavior, it is critical to be aware of these nuances and this article offers essential insights on how to address them. Overall, this study provides a step-by-step guideline to enhance the piezoelectricity of PVDF-based nanocomposites for sensing applications.

Single-Layer and Double-Layer Filtration Materials Based on Polyvinylidene Fluoride-Co-hexafluoropropylene Nanofibers Coated on Melamine Microfibers

In this work, we demonstrate selected optimization changes in the simple design of filtration masks to increase particle removal efficiency (PRE) and filter quality factor by combining experiments and numerical modeling. In particular, we focus on single-layer filters fabricated from uniform thickness fibers and double-layer filters consisting of a layer of highly permeable thick fibers as a support and a thin layer of filtering electrospun nanofibers. For single-layer filters, we demonstrate performance improvement in terms of the quality factor by optimizing the geometry of the composition. We show significantly better PRE performance for filters composed of micrometer-sized fibers covered by a thin layer of electrospun nanofibers. This work is motivated and carried out in collaboration with a targeted industrial development of selected melamine-based filter nano- and micromaterials.

β-Phase Enhancement of Force Spun Composite Nanofibers for Sensing Applications

In this study, a piezoelectric harvesting device was developed using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers reinforced with either BaTiO3 nanoparticles or graphene powder. BaTiO3 nanoparticles were synthesized through the sol-gel method with an average size of approximately 32 nm. The PVDF nanofibers, along with the nanoparticle composites in an acetone-N,N-dimethylformamide mixture, were produced using a centrifugal Forcespinning™ machine, resulting in a heterogeneous arrangement of fiber meshes, with an average diameter of 1.6 μm. Experimental tests revealed that the electrical performance of the fabricated harvester reached a maximum value of 35.8 Voc, demonstrating the potential of BaTiO3/ PVDF-based piezoelectric devices for designing wearable applications such as body-sensing and energy-harvesting devices.

Hydroxyapatite-filled osteoinductive and piezoelectric nanofibers for bone tissue engineering

Osteoporotic-related fractures are among the leading causes of chronic disease morbidity in Europe and in the US. While a significant percentage of fractures can be repaired naturally, in delayed-union and non-union fractures surgical intervention is necessary for proper bone regeneration. Given the current lack of optimized clinical techniques to adequately address this issue, bone tissue engineering (BTE) strategies focusing on the development of scaffolds for temporarily replacing damaged bone and supporting its regeneration process have been gaining interest. The piezoelectric properties of bone, which have an important role in tissue homeostasis and regeneration, have been frequently neglected in the design of BTE scaffolds. Therefore, in this study, we developed novel hydroxyapatite (HAp)-filled osteoinductive and piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-tetrafluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) nanofibers via electrospinning capable of replicating the tissue's fibrous extracellular matrix (ECM) composition and native piezoelectric properties. The developed PVDF-TrFE/HAp nanofibers had biomimetic collagen fibril-like diameters, as well as enhanced piezoelectric and surface properties, which translated into a better capacity to assist the mineralization process and cell proliferation. The biological cues provided by the HAp nanoparticles enhanced the osteogenic differentiation of seeded human mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) as observed by the increased ALP activity, cell-secreted calcium deposition and osteogenic gene expression levels observed for the HAp-containing fibers. Overall, our findings describe the potential of combining PVDF-TrFE and HAp for developing electroactive and osteoinductive nanofibers capable of supporting bone tissue regeneration.

A Review on Acoustic Emission Testing for Structural Health Monitoring of Polymer-Based Composites

Acoustic emission (AE) has received increased interest as a structural health monitoring (SHM) technique for various materials, including laminated polymer composites. Piezoelectric sensors, including PZT (piezoelectric ceramic) and PVDF (piezoelectric polymer), can monitor AE in materials. The thickness of the piezoelectric sensors (as low as 28 µm-PVDF) allows embedding the sensors within the laminated composite, creating a smart material. Incorporating piezoelectric sensors within composites has several benefits but presents numerous difficulties and challenges. This paper provides an overview of acoustic emission testing, concluding with a discussion on embedding piezoelectric AE sensors within fibre-polymer composites. Various aspects are covered, including the underlying AE principles in fibre-based composites, factors that influence the reliability and accuracy of AE measurements, methods to artificially induce acoustic emission, and the correlation between AE events and damage in polymer composites.

Influence of phase-separated structural morphologies on the piezo and triboelectric properties of polymer composites

Simplified and flexible fabrication methods, high output performance, and extreme flexibility of polymer-based nanocomposites represent versatile designs in self-powering devices for wearable electronics, sensors, and smart societies. Examples include polyvinylidene fluoride and its copolymers-based piezoelectric nanogenerators, green and recyclable triboelectric nanogenerators, etc. Advanced functionalities, multi-functional properties, and the extensive lifetime required for nanogenerators inspire researchers to focus on structural modifications of the polymeric materials, to fully exploit their performances. Phase separation is a physicochemical process in which polymeric phases rearrange, resulting in specific structures and properties, that ultimately influence mechanical, electronic, and other functional properties. This article will study the phase separation strategies used to modify the polymeric base, both physically and chemically, to generate the maximum electric power upon mechanical and frictional deformation. The effect of interfacial modification on the efficiency of the nanogenerators, chemical and mechanical stability, structural integrity, durable performance, and morphological appearance will be extensively covered in this review. Moreover, piezo- and triboelectric power generation have numerous challenges, such as poor resistance to mechanical deformation, reduced cyclic performance stability, and a high cost of production. These often depend on the method of developing the nanogenerators, and phase separation provides a unique advantage in reducing them. The current review provides a one-stop solution to understand and disseminate the phase separation process, types and mechanisms, advantages, and role in improving the piezoelectric and triboelectric performances of the nanogenerators.

MXene-Based Nanocomposites for Piezoelectric and Triboelectric Energy Harvesting Applications

Due to its superior advantages in terms of electronegativity, metallic conductivity, mechanical flexibility, customizable surface chemistry, etc., 2D MXenes for nanogenerators have demonstrated significant progress. In order to push scientific design strategies for the practical application of nanogenerators from the viewpoints of the basic aspect and recent advancements, this systematic review covers the most recent developments of MXenes for nanogenerators in its first section. In the second section, the importance of renewable energy and an introduction to nanogenerators, major classifications, and their working principles are discussed. At the end of this section, various materials used for energy harvesting and frequent combos of MXene with other active materials are described in detail together with the essential framework of nanogenerators. In the third, fourth, and fifth sections, the materials used for nanogenerators, MXene synthesis along with its properties, and MXene nanocomposites with polymeric materials are discussed in detail with the recent progress and challenges for their use in nanogenerator applications. In the sixth section, a thorough discussion of the design strategies and internal improvement mechanisms of MXenes and the composite materials for nanogenerators with 3D printing technologies are presented. Finally, we summarize the key points discussed throughout this review and discuss some thoughts on potential approaches for nanocomposite materials based on MXenes that could be used in nanogenerators for better performance.

Electrospun Poly (Vinylidene Fluoride-Co-Hexafluoropropylene) Nanofiber Membranes for Brine Treatment via Membrane Distillation

The major challenge for membrane distillation (MD) is the membrane wetting resistance induced by pollutants in the feed solution. The proposed solution for this issue was to fabricate membranes with hydrophobic properties. Hydrophobic electrospun poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) nanofiber membranes were produced for brine treatment using the direct-contact membrane distillation (DCMD) technique. These nanofiber membranes were prepared from three different polymeric solution compositions to study the effect of solvent composition on the electrospinning process. Furthermore, the effect of the polymer concentration was investigated by preparing polymeric solutions with three different polymer percentages: 6, 8, and 10%. All of the nanofiber membranes obtained from electrospinning were post-treated at varying temperatures. The effects of thickness, porosity, pore size, and liquid entry pressure (LEP) were studied. The hydrophobicity was determined using contact angle measurements, which were investigated using optical contact angle goniometry. The crystallinity and thermal properties were studied using DSC and XRD, while the functional groups were studied using FTIR. The morphological study was performed with AMF and described the roughness of nanofiber membranes. Finally, all of the nanofiber membranes had enough of a hydrophobic nature to be used in DCMD. A PVDF membrane filter disc and all nanofiber membranes were applied in DCMD to treat brine water. The resulting water flux and permeate water quality were compared, and it was discovered that all of the produced nanofiber membranes showed good behavior with varying water flux, but the salt rejection was greater than 90%. A membrane prepared from DMF/acetone 5-5 with 10% PVDF-HFP provided the perfect performance, with an average water flux of 44 kg.m^-2.h^-1 and salt rejection of 99.8%.

Sonopiezoelectric Nanomedicine and Materdicine

Endogenous electric field is ubiquitous in a multitude of important living activities such as bone repair, cell signal transduction, and nerve regeneration, signifying that regulating the electric field in organisms is highly beneficial to maintain organism health. As an emerging and promising research direction, piezoelectric nanomedicine and materdicine precisely activated by ultrasound with synergetic advantages of deep tissue penetration, remote spatiotemporal selectivity, and mechanical-electrical energy interconversion, have been progressively utilized for disease treatment and tissue repair by participating in the modulation of endogenous electric field. This specific nanomedicine utilizing piezoelectric effect activated by ultrasound is typically regarded as "sonopiezoelectric nanomedicine". This comprehensive review summarizes and discusses the substantially employed sonopiezoelectric nanomaterials and nanotherapies to provide an insight into the internal mechanism of the corresponding biological behavior/effect of sonopiezoelectric biomaterials in versatile disease treatments. This review primarily focuses on the sonopiezoelectric biomaterials for biosensing, drug delivery, tumor therapy, tissue regeneration, antimicrobia, and further illuminates the underlying sonopiezoelectric mechanism. In addition, the challenges and developments/prospects of sonopiezoelectric nanomedicine are analyzed for promoting the further clinical translation. It is earnestly expected that this kind of nanomedicine/biomaterials-enabled sonopiezoelectric technology will provoke the comprehensive investigation and promote the clinical development of the next-generation multifunctional materdicine.

Review of Zinc Oxide Piezoelectric Nanogenerators: Piezoelectric Properties, Composite Structures and Power Output

Lead-containing piezoelectric materials typically show the highest energy conversion efficiencies, but due to their toxicity they will be limited in future applications. In their bulk form, the piezoelectric properties of lead-free piezoelectric materials are significantly lower than lead-containing materials. However, the piezoelectric properties of lead-free piezoelectric materials at the nano scale can be significantly larger than the bulk scale. This review looks at the suitability of ZnO nanostructures as candidate lead-free piezoelectric materials for use in piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) based on their piezoelectric properties. Of the papers reviewed, Neodymium-doped ZnO nanorods (NRs) have a comparable piezoelectric strain constant to bulk lead-based piezoelectric materials and hence are good candidates for PENGs. Piezoelectric energy harvesters typically have low power outputs and an improvement in their power density is needed. This review systematically reviews the different composite structures of ZnO PENGs to determine the effect of composite structure on power output. State-of-the-art techniques to increase the power output of PENGs are presented. Of the PENGs reviewed, the highest power output belonged to a vertically aligned ZnO nanowire (NWs) PENG (1-3 nanowire composite) with a power output of 45.87 μW/cm² under finger tapping. Future directions of research and challenges are discussed.

Formation of Porous Structures and Crystalline Phases in Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Membranes Prepared with Nonsolvent-Induced Phase Separation-Roles of Solvent Polarity

PVDF membranes were prepared with nonsolvent-induced phase separation, using solvents with various dipole moments, including HMPA, NMP, DMAc and TEP. Both the fraction of the polar crystalline phase and the water permeability of the prepared membrane increased monotonously with an increasing solvent dipole moment. FTIR/ATR analyses were conducted at the surfaces of the cast films during membrane formation to provide information on if the solvents were present as the PVDF crystallized. The results reveal that, with HMPA, NMP or DMAc being used to dissolve PVDF, a solvent with a higher dipole moment resulted in a lower solvent removal rate from the cast film, because the viscosity of the casting solution was higher. The lower solvent removal rate allowed a higher solvent concentration on the surface of the cast film, leading to a more porous surface and longer solvent-governed crystallization. Because of its low polarity, TEP induced non-polar crystals and had a low affinity for water, accounting for the low water permeability and the low fraction of polar crystals with TEP as the solvent. The results provide insight into how the membrane structure on a molecular scale (related to the crystalline phase) and nanoscale (related to water permeability) was related to and influenced by solvent polarity and its removal rate during membrane formation.

A mini-review on the dielectric properties of cellulose and nanocellulose-based materials as electronic components

Cellulose-based materials have the advantages of renewable, non-toxic, flexible, and strong mechanical properties, so it of is great significance to study the dielectric properties of cellulose-based materials. In this paper, we summarized the factors influencing the dielectric properties of cellulose and nanocellulose-based dielectric and the ways to change the dielectric properties, mainly exploring the methods to improve the dielectric constant of cellulose-based dielectric materials. Cellulose and nanocellulose-based dielectric need to improve the hygroscopic property, increase the flexibility and reduce dielectric loss of the composite materials. This review summarizes the current state-of-art progress of new dielectric materials for green energy storage and flexible electronic devices.

Nano-Enriched Self-Powered Wireless Body Area Network for Sustainable Health Monitoring Services

Advances in nanotechnology have enabled the creation of novel materials with specific electrical and physical characteristics. This leads to a significant development in the industry of electronics that can be applied in various fields. In this paper, we propose a fabrication of nanotechnology-based materials that can be used to design stretchy piezoelectric nanofibers for energy harvesting to power connected bio-nanosensors in a Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN). The bio-nanosensors are powered based on harvested energy from mechanical movements of the body, specifically the arms, joints, and heartbeats. A suite of these nano-enriched bio-nanosensors can be used to form microgrids for a self-powered wireless body area network (SpWBAN), which can be used in various sustainable health monitoring services. A system model for an SpWBAN with an energy harvesting-based medium access control protocol is presented and analyzed based on fabricated nanofibers with specific characteristics. The simulation results show that the SpWBAN outperforms and has a longer lifetime than contemporary WBAN system designs without self-powering capability.

Extensional Rheology of Poly(vinylidene fluoride)/N,N-dimethylformamide Solutions

Typical extension flow occurs in electrospinning process of Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) solutions such that researchers focus on extensional rheological behaviors of PVDF solutions. The extensional viscosity of PVDF solutions is measured to know the fluidic deformation in extension flows. The solutions are prepared by dissolving PVDF powder into N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent. A homemade extensional viscometric device is used to produce uniaxial extension flows and the feasibility of the viscometric device is verified by applying the glycerol as a test fluid. Experimental results show that PVDF/DMF solutions are extension shinning as well as shear shinning. The Trouton ratio of thinning PVDF/DMF solution is close to three at very low strain rate and then reaches a peak value until it drops to a small value at high strain rate. Furthermore, an exponential model may be used to fit the measured values of uniaxial extensional viscosity at various extension rates, while traditional power-law model is applicable to steady shear viscosity. For 10~14% PVDF/DMF solution, the zero-extension viscosity by fitting reaches 31.88~157.53 Pa·s and the peak Trouton ratio is 4.17~5.16 at applied extension rate of less than 34 s^-1. Characteristic relaxation time is λ~100 ms and corresponding critical extension rate is ε˙c~5 s^-1. The extensional viscosity of very dilute PVDF/DMF solution at very high extension rate is beyond the limit of our homemade extensional viscometric device. This case needs a higher sensitive tensile gauge and a higher-accelerated motion mechanism for test.

MXene-Functionalized Ferroelectric Nanocomposite Membranes with Modulating Surface Potential Enhance Bone Regeneration

Rapid and effective bone defect repair remains a challenging issue for clinical treatment. Applying biomaterials with endogenous surface potential has been widely studied to enhance bone regeneration, but how to regulate the electric potential and surface morphology of the implanted materials precisely to achieve an optimal bioelectric microenvironment is still a major challenge. The aim of this study is to develop electroactive biomaterials that better mimic the extracellular microenvironment for bone regeneration. Hence, MXene/polyvinylidene fluoride (MXene/PVDF) ferroelectric nanocomposite membranes were prepared by electrospinning. Physicochemical characterization demonstrated that Ti₃C₂T_x MXene nanosheets were wrapped in PVDF shell layer and the surface morphology and potential were modulated by altering the content of MXene, where uniform distribution of fibers and enhanced electric potential can be obtained and precisely assembled into a natural extracellular matrix (ECM) in bone tissue. Consequently, the MXene/PVDF membranes facilitated cell adhesion, stretching, and growth, showing good biocompatibility; meanwhile, their intrinsic electric potential promoted the recruitment of osteogenic cells and accelerated the differentiation of osteoblast. Furthermore, 1 wt % MXene/PVDF membrane with a suitable surface potential and better topographical structure for bone regeneration qualitatively and quantitatively promoted bone tissue formation in a rat calvarial bone defect after 4 and 8 weeks of healing. The fabricated MXene/PVDF ferroelectric nanocomposite membranes show a biomimetic microenvironment with a sustainable electric potential and optimal 3D topographical structure, providing an innovative and well-suited strategy for application in bone regeneration.

Piezocatalytic Techniques in Environmental Remediation

As a consequence of rapid industrialization throughout the world, various environmental pollutants have begun to accumulate in water, air, and soil. This endangers the ecological environment of the earth, and environmental remediation has become an immediate priority. Among various environmental remediation techniques, piezocatalytic techniques, which uniquely take advantage of the piezoelectric effect, have attracted much attention. Piezoelectric effects allow pollutant degradation directly, while also enhancing photocatalysis by reducing the recombination of photogenerated carriers. In this Review, we provide a comprehensive summary of recent developments in piezocatalytic techniques for environmental remediation. The origin of the piezoelectric effect as well as classification of piezoelectric materials and their application in environmental remediation are systematically summarized. We also analyze the potential underlying mechanisms. Finally, urgent problems and the future development of piezocatalytic techniques are discussed.

Piezo-Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity of the Electrospun Fibrous Magnetic PVDF/BiFeO3 Membrane

Creating stimulus-sensitive smart catalysts capable of decomposing organic dyes with high efficiency is a critical task in ecology. Combining the advantages of photoactive piezoelectric nanomaterials and ferroelectric polymers can effectively solve this problem by collecting mechanical vibrations and light energy. Using the electrospinning method, we synthesized hybrid polymer-inorganic nanocomposite fiber membranes based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and bismuth ferrite (BFO). The samples were studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), total transmittance and diffuse reflectance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), and piezopotential measurements. It has been demonstrated that the addition of BFO leads to an increase in the proportion of the polar phase from 86.5% to 96.1% due to the surface ion-dipole interaction. It is shown that the composite exhibits anisotropy of magnetic properties depending on the orientation of the magnetic field. The results of piezo-photocatalytic experiments showed that under the combined action of ultrasonic treatment and irradiation with both visible and UV light, the reaction rate increased in comparison with photolysis, sonolysis, and piezocatalysis. Moreover, for PVDF/BFO, which does not exhibit photocatalytic activity, under the combined action of light and ultrasound, the reaction rate increases by about 3× under UV irradiation and by about 6× under visible light irradiation. This behavior is explained by the piezoelectric potential and the narrowing of the band gap of the composite due to mechanical stress caused by the ultrasound.

Electroactive Biomaterials for Facilitating Bone Defect Repair under Pathological Conditions

Bone degeneration associated with various diseases is increasing due to rapid aging, sedentary lifestyles, and unhealthy diets. Living bone tissue has bioelectric properties critical to bone remodeling, and bone degeneration under various pathological conditions results in significant changes to these bioelectric properties. There is growing interest in utilizing biomimetic electroactive biomaterials that recapitulate the natural electrophysiological microenvironment of healthy bone tissue to promote bone repair. This review first summarizes the etiology of degenerative bone conditions associated with various diseases such as type II diabetes, osteoporosis, periodontitis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteomyelitis, and metastatic osteolysis. Next, the diverse array of natural and synthetic electroactive biomaterials with therapeutic potential are discussed. Putative mechanistic pathways by which electroactive biomaterials can mitigate bone degeneration are critically examined, including the enhancement of osteogenesis and angiogenesis, suppression of inflammation and osteoclastogenesis, as well as their anti-bacterial effects. Finally, the limited research on utilization of electroactive biomaterials in the treatment of bone degeneration associated with the aforementioned diseases are examined. Previous studies have mostly focused on using electroactive biomaterials to treat bone traumatic injuries. It is hoped that this review will encourage more research efforts on the use of electroactive biomaterials for treating degenerative bone conditions.

Engineering Dental Tissues Using Biomaterials with Piezoelectric Effect: Current Progress and Future Perspectives

Dental caries and traumatic injuries to teeth may cause irreversible inflammation and eventual death of the dental pulp. Nevertheless, predictably, repair and regeneration of the dentin-pulp complex remain a formidable challenge. In recent years, smart multifunctional materials with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and pro-regenerative properties have emerged as promising approaches to meet this critical clinical need. As a unique class of smart materials, piezoelectric materials have an unprecedented advantage over other stimuli-responsive materials due to their inherent capability to generate electric charges, which have been shown to facilitate both antimicrobial action and tissue regeneration. Nonetheless, studies on piezoelectric biomaterials in the repair and regeneration of the dentin-pulp complex remain limited. In this review, we summarize the biomedical applications of piezoelectric biomaterials in dental applications and elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms contributing to the biological effect of piezoelectricity. Moreover, we highlight how this state-of-the-art can be further exploited in the future for dental tissue engineering.

The Application of PVDF-Based Piezoelectric Patches in Energy Harvesting from Tire Deformation

The application of Polyvinylidene Fluoride or Polyvinylidene Difluoride (PVDF) in harvesting energy from tire deformation was investigated in this study. An instrumented tire with different sizes of PVDF-based piezoelectric patches and a tri-axial accelerometer attached to its inner liner was used for this purpose and was tested under different conditions on asphalt and concrete surfaces. The results demonstrated that on both pavement types, the generated voltage was directly proportional to the size of the harvester patches, the longitudinal velocity, and the normal load. Additionally, the generated voltage was inversely proportional to the tire inflation pressure. Moreover, the range of generated voltages was slightly higher on asphalt compared to the same testing conditions on the concrete surface. Based on the results, it was concluded that in addition to the potential role of the PVDF-based piezoelectric film in harvesting energy from tire deformation, they demonstrate great potential to be used as self-powered sensors to estimate the tire-road contact parameters.

Polyvinylidene fluoride multi-scale nanofibrous membrane modified using N-halamine with high filtration efficiency and durable antibacterial properties for air filtration

HYPOTHESIS

Particulate matter (PM) pollution and the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic have increased demand for protective masks. However, typical protective masks only intercept particles and produce peculiar odors if worn for extended periods owing to bacterial growth. Therefore, new protective materials with good filtration and antibacterial capabilities are required.

EXPERIMENTS

In this study, we prepared multi-scale polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibrous membranes for efficient filtration and durable antibacterial properties via N-halamine modification.

FINDINGS

The N-halamine-modified nanofibrous membrane (PVDF-PAA-TMP-Cl) had sufficient active chlorine content (800 ppm), and the tensile stress and strain were improved compared with the original membrane, from 6.282 to 9.435 MPa and from 51.3 % to 56.4 %, respectively. To further improve the interception efficiency, ultrafine nanofibers (20-35 nm) were spun on PVDF-PAA-TMP-Cl nanofibrous membranes, and multi-scale PVDF-PAA-TMP-Cl nanofibrous membranes were prepared. These membranes exhibited good PM_0.3 interception (99.93 %), low air resistance (79 Pa), promising long-term PM_2.5 purification ability, and high bactericidal efficiency (>98 %). After ten chlorination cycles, the antibacterial efficiency against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus exceeded 90 %; hence, the material demonstrated highly efficient filtration and repeatable antibacterial properties. The results of this study have implications for the development of air and water filtration systems and multi-functional protective materials.

Brief Review of PVDF Properties and Applications Potential

Currently, there is an ever-growing interest in carbon materials with increased deformation-strength, thermophysical parameters. Due to their unique physical and chemical properties, such materials have a wide range of applications in various industries. Many prospects for the use of polymer composite materials based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) for scientific and technical purposes explain the plethora of studies on their characteristics "structure-property", processing, application and ecology which keep appearing. Building a broader conceptual picture of new generation polymeric materials is feasible with the use of innovative technologies; thus, achieving a high level of multidisciplinarity and integration of polymer science; its fundamental problems are formed, the solution of which determines a significant contribution to the natural-scientific picture of the modern world. This review provides explanation of PVDF advanced properties and potential applications of this polymer material in its various forms. More specifically, this paper will go over PVDF trademarks presently available on the market, provide thorough overview of the current and potential applications. Last but not least, this article will also delve into the processing and chemical properties of PVDF such as radiation carbonization, β-phase formation, etc.

A Flexible Piezoelectric Device for Frequency Sensing from PVDF/SWCNT Composite Fibers

Polymer piezoelectric devices have been widely studied as sensors, energy harvesters, and generators with flexible and simple processes. Flexible piezoelectric devices are sensitive to external stimuli and are attracting attention because of their potential and usefulness as acoustic sensors. In this regard, the frequency sensing of sound must be studied to use flexible piezoelectric devices as sensors. In this study, a flexible piezoelectric device composed of a polymer and an electrode was successfully fabricated. Polyvinylidene fluoride, the active layer of the piezoelectric device, was prepared by electrospinning, and electrodes were formed by dip−coating in a prepared single−walled carbon nanotube dispersion. The output voltage of the external sound was matched with the input frequency through a fast Fourier transform, and frequency matching was successfully performed, even with mechanical stimulation. In a high−frequency test, the piezoelectric effect and frequency domain peak started to decrease sharply at 300 Hz, and the limit of the piezoelectric effect and sensing was observed from 800 Hz. The results of this study suggest a method for developing flexible piezoelectric-fiber frequency sensors based on piezoelectric devices for acoustic sensor systems.
