Nitrogen Losses and Potential Mitigation Strategies for a Sustainable Agroecosystem

Sensor based precise nitrogen application augmented productivity and profitability of mustard (Brassica juncea L.)

Unremitting decline in crop productivity and nutrient recovery are resulted due to dearth of need based fertilizer recommendation over blanket application apart from nitrogen pollution in several means. An advance nutrient management tactic, GreenSeeker (GS) has developed and used in many field crops following the principle of four "R" (right source, right amount at right time, and place) nutrients stewardship technologies. But no studies have been conducted for evaluation of GS in mustard for improving productivity, profitability and nutrient use efficiency (NUE) while minimizing environmental risks. With this objective, a study was planned to conduct an experiment in rabi season of 2021-22 and 2022-23 to assess optical sensor based nitrogen management in mustard over blanket recommendation. The experiment was comprised of ten N treatments including control in randomized block design in triplicates. Research findings indicated that application of GreenSeeker based N significantly improved all growth traits and yield parameters in Brassica juncea L. Per cent enhancement in seed yield, net monetary returns and benefit-cost ratio was higher as 19.3 and 64.5%, 125.1 & 36.2% and 58.8 & 24.4%, respectively under GS based multi split N application over RDF and control. Further, real time N management with GS acquired higher crop production efficiency (CPE) (19.9 kg/day) with lesser cost/kg production (Rs 15.7/kg). Split application of N using GS increased oil yield by 79.9 and 26% over control and recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF) with maximum oil content (42.3%), and increases soil organic carbon (SOC) content by 16.1% from its initial value. Moreover, GS crop sensor could be the probable solution to minimize the crop nitrogen requirement by 15-20% with a yield enhancement of about 18.7% over RDF.

Recent progress on conservation and restoration of soil fertility for horticulture

Soil serves as a fundamental and valuable asset in horticultural activities, and preserving and restoring soil quality is critical to ensuring the long-term profitability and sustainability of these operations. Human activities and natural processes are the primary causes of natural resource degradation, with soil erosion emerging as a significant threat across multiple degradation pathways. Thus, comprehensive management of water and soil resources is required to promote sustainable horticulture and protect natural ecosystems. The advancement and dissemination of innovative technologies, coupled with the prudent utilization of natural resources with potential management approaches, are urgently needed to mitigate the deterioration of water and soil quality. The soil's fertility can be enhanced further by including cover crops that add organic matter into the soil, which results in strengthened structural integrity and encourages fertile and healthy soil; by employing green manure as well as expanding legumes that absorb N from the air via the biological N fixation; using micro-dose fertilizer to compensate for expenses via plant absorption as well as additional techniques; as well as minimizing expenses employing leaching beneath the plant's rooting region. This review discusses strategies for optimizing soil properties and increasing nutrient accessibility, as well as novel approaches to improving water utilization, waste reduction, and ecosystem preservation. Finally, implementing integrated and environmentally sound soil management strategies is critical for addressing the challenges posed by global warming and the limited availability of resources inherent in horticultural practices.

Agriculture and environmental management through nanotechnology: Eco-friendly nanomaterial synthesis for soil-plant systems, food safety, and sustainability

Through the advancement of nanotechnology, agricultural and food systems are undergoing strategic enhancements, offering innovative solutions to complex problems. This scholarly essay thoroughly examines nanotechnological innovations and their implications within these critical industries. Traditional practices are undergoing radical transformation as nanomaterials emerge as novel agents in roles traditionally filled by fertilizers, pesticides, and biosensors. Micronutrient management and preservation techniques are further enhanced, indicating a shift towards more nutrient-dense and longevity-oriented food production. Nanoparticles (NPs), with their unique physicochemical properties, such as an extraordinary surface-to-volume ratio, find applications in healthcare, diagnostics, agriculture, and other fields. However, concerns about their potential overuse and bioaccumulation raise unanswered questions about their health effects. Molecule-to-molecule interactions and physicochemical dynamics create pathways through which nanoparticles cause toxicity. The combination of nanotechnology and environmental sustainability principles leads to the examination of green nanoparticle synthesis. The discourse extends to how nanomaterials penetrate biological systems, their applications, toxicological effects, and dissemination routes. Additionally, this examination delves into the ecological consequences of nanomaterial contamination in natural ecosystems. Employing robust risk assessment methodologies, including the risk allocation framework, is recommended to address potential dangers associated with nanotechnology integration. Establishing standardized, universally accepted guidelines for evaluating nanomaterial toxicity and protocols for nano-waste disposal is urged to ensure responsible stewardship of this transformative technology. In conclusion, the article summarizes global trends, persistent challenges, and emerging regulatory strategies shaping nanotechnology in agriculture and food science. Sustained, in-depth research is crucial to fully benefit from nanotechnology prospects for sustainable agriculture and food systems.

Updated loss factors and high-resolution spatial variations for reactive nitrogen losses from Chinese rice paddies

Anthropogenic reactive nitrogen (Nr) loss has been a critical environmental issue. However, due to the limitations of data availability and appropriate methods, the estimation of Nr loss from rice paddies and associated spatial patterns at a fine scale remain unclear. Here, we estimated the background Nr loss (BNL, i.e., Nr loss from soils without fertilization) and the loss factors (the percentage of Nr loss from synthetic fertilizer, LFs) for five loss pathways in rice paddies and identified the national 1 × 1 km spatial variations using data-driven models combined with multi-source data. Based on established machine learning models, an average of 23.4% (15.3-34.6%, 95% confidence interval) of the synthetic N fertilizer was lost to the environment, in the forms of NH3 (17.4%, 10.9-26.7%), N2O (0.5%, 0.3-0.8%), NO (0.2%, 0.1-0.4%), N leaching (3.1%, 0.8-5.7%), and runoff (2.3%, 0.6-4.5%). The total Nr loss from Chinese rice paddies was estimated to be 1.92 ± 0.52 Tg N yr-1 in 2021, in which synthetic fertilizer-induced Nr loss accounted for 69% and BNL accounted for the other 31%. The hotspots of Nr loss were concentrated in the middle and lower regions of the Yangtze River, an area with extensive rice cultivation. This study improved the estimation accuracy of Nr losses and identified the hotspots, which could provide updated insights for policymakers to set the priorities and strategies for Nr loss mitigation.

Modeling canopy water content in the assessment for rainfall induced surface and groundwater nitrate contamination: The Bilate cropland sub watershed

Nitrate contamination in surface and groundwater remains a widespread problem in agricultural watersheds is primarily associated to high levels of percolation or leakage from fertilized soil, which allows easy infiltration from soil into groundwater. This study was aimed to predict canopy water content to determine the nitrate contamination index resulting from nitrogen fertilizer loss in surface and groundwater. The study used Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) model using MODIS 006 MOD13Q1-EVI Earth observation data, crop information and rainfall data. Satellite data collection was synchronized with regional crop calendars and calibrated to plant biomass. The average plant biomass during observed plant growth stages was between 0.19 kg/m2 at the minimum and 0.57 kg/m2 at the maximum. These values are based on the growth stages of crops and provide a solid basis for monitoring and validating crop water productivity data. The simulation results were validated with a high correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.996, P < 0.0005) for the observed rainfall in the growing zone compared to the predicted canopy water content. The nitrate contamination index assessment was conducted in 2004, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2020. Canopy water content and root zone seasonal water content were measured in (%) per portion as indicators of the NO-3-N-nitrate contamination index in these years (0.391, 0.316, 0.298, 0.389, 0.380, 0.339, 0.242, 0.342 and 0.356).

Reducing nitrogen loss from farmland by layered double hydroxide-supported carbon dots-enhanced ammonium immobilization

It remains a significant challenge to develop a kind of cost-effective and eco-friendly adsorbent with strong immobilization capabilities for ammonium in farmland. In this work, we employed Ca/Al layered double hydroxide-supported carbon dots (CDs@Ca/Al-LDHs) as a novel and efficient adsorbent for ammonium immobilization both in aqueous and soil environments. Such a composite could exhibit a high adsorption capacity towards ammonium in solution, which was four times higher than zeolite and three times higher than biochar under the same conditions. The mechanism investigations revealed that electrostatic interactions between the negatively charged CDs and the positively charged ammonium played a key role in the adsorption. In 30-day leaching experiments, the fabricated composite cumulatively reduced ammonium and nitrate by 6.3% and 9.7%, respectively at a dosage of 0.1% (w/w). Incubation experiments further confirmed that the developed composite could effectively inhibit ammonia volatilization and nitrification by immobilizing the ammonium within soil matrices. Our results demonstrated that CDs@Ca/Al-LDHs represented a promising candidate for cost-effective and eco-friendly immobilization of excess ammonium from over-fertilized farmland.

The Effect of Nutrient Deficiencies on the Annual Yield and Root Growth of Summer Corn in a Double-Cropping System

The North China Plain has a typical winter wheat-summer corn double-cropping pattern. The effects of nutrient deficiency conditions on the root characteristics and yield of summer corn in the double-cropping system were studied for four years. Long-term monotonous fertilization patterns undermine crop rotation systems and are detrimental to the sustainability of agricultural production. To complement the development of rational fertilization strategies by exploring the response of crop rotation systems to nutrient deficiencies, an experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design consisting of five treatments with three replicates for each treatment: (1) an adequate supply of nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers and potash-deficient treatment (T1); (2) an adequate supply of nitrogen and potash fertilizers and phosphorus-deficient treatment (T2); (3) an adequate supply of phosphorus and potash fertilizers and nitrogen-deficient treatment (T3); (4) nutrient-sufficient treatment for crop growth (T4); and (5) no-fertilizer treatment (CK). The results showed that different nutrient treatments had significant effects on the root length density (RLD), root surface area density (RSAD), and root dry weight density (RDWD) in summer corn. At the physiological maturity stage (R6), the root indexes of RLD, RSAD, and RDWD were significantly higher in the 0-20 cm soil layer in T4 compared to CK, with an increase of 86.2%, 131.4%, and 100.0%, respectively. Similarly, in the 20-40 cm soil layer, the root indexes of T4 were 85.7%, 61.3%, and 50.0% higher than CK, with varied differences observed in the other nutrient-deficient treatments. However, there was no significant difference among the treatments in the 40-60 cm layer except for T4, whose root index showed a difference. The root fresh weight and root dry matter in T4, T3, T2, and T1 were increased to different degrees compared with CK. In addition, these differences in root indexes affected the annual yield of crops, which increased by 20.96%, 21.95%, and 8.14% in T4, T2, and T1, respectively, compared to CK. The spike number and the number of grains per spike of T4 were 10.8% and 8.3% higher than those of CK, which led to the differences in summer corn yields. The 1000-kernel weight of T4, T2, and T1 were 9.5%, 8.8%, and 7.4% higher than that of CK, whereas the determining nutrient was nitrogen fertilizer, and phosphorus fertilizer had a higher effect on yield than potassium fertilizer. This provides a theoretical basis for the effect of nutrient deficiency conditions on yield stability in a double-cropping system.

Influence of organic fertilization on growth and yield of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) in Kabete and Mbooni areas, Kenya

Strawberries are a valuable crop in Kenya with the potential for significant economic contributions. However, strawberry production in the country has been facing considerable challenges, impacting its economic potential. This study examined the influence of organic manure on strawberry growth and characteristics in Kabete and Mbooni areas in Kenya. The study used a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Treatments included livestock manure (well composted mixture of chicken, goat, and cow manure), bokashi manure, and a control, coded as LivManure, BokManure and Control, respectively. Growth parameters including leaf area, number of white flowers and number of runners, as well as yield parameters such as the number and weight of strawberries were assessed from the 3rd to 10th week after transplanting, during the short rain season of 2021. Using R statistical software, linear models were fitted to datasets from both study sites and analyzed using one-way ANOVA, followed by post-hoc tests for multiple comparisons. The rigorous analysis of the Kabete and Mbooni datasets provided insightful revelations about the influence of different treatments on strawberry characteristics, and geographical disparities between the two regions. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) outcomes unveiled significant treatment effects in both sites, with F(2,69) = 62.57, p < 0.001 for Kabete and F(2,69) = 49.02, p < 0.001 for Mbooni, highlighting distinct influences of treatments on log values within each group. Post hoc analyses, including Tukey tests and bootstrap comparisons robustly validated the significant differences among the three treatments in each site, supported by p-values <0.001. Effect sizes were also employed to reinforce the findings, and planned contrasts were set to gain more power in the analysis of variance. Comparison between Kabete and Mbooni indicated a significant difference of 9.78 units, with Mbooni area exhibiting significantly higher strawberry characteristics compared to Kabete. The results showed that LivManure treatment had the highest mean in both sites, followed by BokManure and Control treatments, respectively. These findings have important implications for agriculture, and highlight the potential benefits of using LivManure treatment to improve strawberry characteristics in similar agroclimatic settings. These observations can be attributed to the beneficial effects of livestock manure on soil health, which include buffering of the soil reaction, provision of essential plant nutrients and enhancement of soil faunal activities. Balanced use of livestock manure is recommended to enhance soil macro and micronutrients, and soil reaction for improved growth and yield of strawberry.

Modeling and identification of affective parameters on cadmium's durability and evaluating cadmium pollution indicators caused by using chemical fertilizers in long term

Soil contamination by anthropogenic heavy metals has become a global issue. This study aimed to investigate cadmium (Cd) concentration, mobility, and contamination indices of Cd in soils in the Hamadan province, west of Iran. To investigate the concentration of Cd in soil, one hundred soil samples from wheat farms and five samples from control lands were collected. Pollution indexes, including Cd mobility, enrichment factor, geoaccumulation index, contamination index, and availability ratio, were investigated. The structural equation model was also used to evaluate effective parameters on cadmium durability in soil. Results showed that mean values of available phosphorus (P) were 83.65, 129, and 65 (mg kg-1) in three land-use types rainfed, irrigated, and controlled, respectively. The mean values of Cd in different land-use types of rainfed, irrigated, and controlled were 0.15, 0.18, and 0.08 (mg kg-1), respectively. The results indicated that the amount of Cd in both forms (available and total) in ones that received fertilizer, especially P fertilizers, was higher than in the controlled one. Other pollution indexes revealed that the study area had been slightly contaminated due to anthropogenic activities. Lime, clay, lead, and OM were identified as affective parameters on cadmium durability. Finally, the results demonstrated that the mobility rate was high. Cd had a higher potential mobility in soil samples in the rain-fed and irrigated land than in the controlled land, and Cd had a low retention time.

Plant Adaptation to Flooding Stress under Changing Climate Conditions: Ongoing Breakthroughs and Future Challenges

Climate-change-induced variations in temperature and rainfall patterns are a serious threat across the globe. Flooding is the foremost challenge to agricultural productivity, and it is believed to become more intense under a changing climate. Flooding is a serious form of stress that significantly reduces crop yields, and future climatic anomalies are predicted to make the problem even worse in many areas of the world. To cope with the prevailing flooding stress, plants have developed different morphological and anatomical adaptations in their roots, aerenchyma cells, and leaves. Therefore, researchers are paying more attention to identifying developed and adopted molecular-based plant mechanisms with the objective of obtaining flooding-resistant cultivars. In this review, we discuss the various physiological, anatomical, and morphological adaptations (aerenchyma cells, ROL barriers (redial O2 loss), and adventitious roots) and the phytohormonal regulation in plants under flooding stress. This review comprises ongoing innovations and strategies to mitigate flooding stress, and it also provides new insights into how this knowledge can be used to improve productivity in the scenario of a rapidly changing climate and increasing flood intensity.

A study on GHG emission assessment in agricultural areas in Sri Lanka: the case of Mahaweli H agricultural region

Agricultural activities contribute 7% to Sri Lanka's economy and account for 20% of the national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The country aims to achieve zero net emissions by 2060. This study was aimed at assessing the present state of agricultural emissions and identifying mitigation strategies. The assessment involved estimating agricultural net GHG emissions from non-mechanical sources in the Mahaweli H region, Sri Lanka, in 2018 using the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC 2019) guidelines. New indicators were developed to measure emissions for major crops and livestock and used to show the flow of carbon and nitrogen. The region's agricultural emissions were estimated to be 162,318 t CO2eq y-1, of which 48% was from rice field methane (CH4) emissions, 32% from soil nitrogen oxide emissions, and 11% from livestock enteric CH4 emissions. Biomass carbon accumulation offset 16% of the total emissions. Rice crops exhibited the highest emission intensity of 4.77 t CO2eq ha-1 y-1, while coconut crop had the highest abatement potential of 15.58 t CO2eq ha-1 y-1. Approximately 1.86% of the carbon input to the agricultural system was released as carbon-containing GHG (CO2 and CH4), whereas 1.18% of the nitrogen input was released as nitrous oxide. The findings of this study suggest extensive adaptations of agricultural carbon sequestration strategies and increased nitrogen use efficiency to achieve GHG mitigation targets. The emission intensity indicators derived from this study can be used for regional agricultural land use planning to maintain designated levels of emissions and implement low-emission farms.

Conjoint application of nano-urea with conventional fertilizers: An energy efficient and environmentally robust approach for sustainable crop production

One of the biggest challenges to be addressed in world agriculture is low nitrogen (N) use efficiency (<40%). To address this issue, researchers have repeatedly underlined the need for greater emphasis on the development and promotion of energy efficient, and environmentally sound novel fertilizers, in addition to improved agronomic management to augment nutrient use efficiency for restoring soil fertility and increasing farm profit. Hence, a fixed plot field experiment was conducted to assess the economic and environmental competency of conventional fertilizers with and without nano-urea (novel fertilizer) in two predominant cropping systems viz., maize-wheat and pearl millet-mustard under semi-arid regions of India. Result indicates that the supply of 75% recommended N with conventional fertilizer along with nano-urea spray (N75PK+nano-urea) reduced the energy requirement by ~8-11% and increased energy use efficiency by ~6-9% over 100% nitrogen through prilled urea fertilizer (business as usual). Furthermore, the application of N75PK+ nano-urea exhibited ~14% higher economic yields in all the crops compared with N50PK+ nano-urea. Application of N75PK+nano-urea registered comparable soil N and dehydrogenase activities (35.8 μg TPF g-1 24 hrs-1 across all crops) over the conventional fertilization (N100PK). This indicates that application of foliar spray of nano-urea with 75% N is a soil supportive production approach. More interestingly, two foliar sprays of nano-urea curtailed nitrogen load by 25% without any yield penalty, besides reducing the greenhouse gases (GHG) emission from 164.2 to 416.5 kg CO2-eq ha-1 under different crops. Therefore, the application of nano-urea along with 75% N through prilled urea is an energy efficient, environmentally robust and economically feasible nutrient management approach for sustainable crop production.

Convergently selected NPF2.12 coordinates root growth and nitrogen use efficiency in wheat and barley

Understanding the genetic and molecular function of nitrate sensing and acquisition across crop species will accelerate breeding of cultivars with improved nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). Here, we performed a genome-wide scan using wheat and barley accessions characterized under low and high N inputs that uncovered the NPF2.12 gene, encoding a homolog of the Arabidopsis nitrate transceptor NRT1.6 and other low-affinity nitrate transporters that belong to the MAJOR FACILITATOR SUPERFAMILY. Next, it is shown that variations in the NPF2.12 promoter correlated with altered NPF2.12 transcript levels where decreased gene expression was measured under low nitrate availability. Multiple field trials revealed a significantly enhanced N content in leaves and grains and NUE in the presence of the elite allele TaNPF2.12^TT grown under low N conditions. Furthermore, the nitrate reductase encoding gene NIA1 was up-regulated in npf2.12 mutant upon low nitrate concentrations, thereby resulting in elevated levels of nitric oxide (NO) production. This increase in NO correlated with the higher root growth, nitrate uptake, and N translocation observed in the mutant when compared to wild-type. The presented data indicate that the elite haplotype alleles of NPF2.12 are convergently selected in wheat and barley that by inactivation indirectly contribute to root growth and NUE by activating NO signaling under low nitrate conditions.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles coated urea enhances nitrogen efficiency and zinc bioavailability in wheat in alkaline calcareous soils

Nitrogenous fertilizers have low efficiency in alkaline calcareous soils due to volatilization and denitrification. These losses cause economic environmental constraints. Coating of urea with nanoparticles (NPs) is an innovative strategy to improve crop yields by sustaining N availability. In the current study, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were synthesized by precipitation method and characterized for morphology and configuration, bond formation, and crystal assemblage using the X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The SEM results confirmed the size of ZnO NPs in the size range of 25 nm with cuboid shape. Urea fertilizer, coated with ZnO NPs, was applied to wheat crop in a pot trial. Two rates of ZnO NPs at 2.8 and 5.7 mg kg^-1 were selected to coat the commercial urea. A batch experiment was conducted to ensure the ammonium (NH₄⁺) and nitrate (NO₃^-) ions release by amending the soil with ZnO NPs coated urea and comparing with non-amended soil. The gradual release of NH₄⁺ was observed for 21 days from the ZnO NP-coated urea. In the second part of trial, seven different treatments of coated and uncoated urea were tested on wheat crop. Urea coated with ZnO nanoparticles at 5.7 mg kg^-1 improved all growth attributes and yields. The ZnO NP coated urea increased the N content shoot (1.90 g 100g^-1 DW) and potentially biofortified Zn content (47.86 mg kg^-1) in wheat grain. The results are indicative of viability of a novel coating for commercial urea that will not only reduce N losses but also supplement Zn without additional cost of labor.

Reducing options of ammonia volatilization and improving nitrogen use efficiency via organic and inorganic amendments in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Background

This study investigates the effect of organic and inorganic supplements on the reduction of ammonia (NH3) volatilization, improvement in nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), and wheat yield.

Methods

A field experiment was conducted following a randomized block design with 10 treatments i.e., T1-without nitrogen (control), T2-recommended dose of nitrogen (RDN), T3-(N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide) (NBPT @ 0.5% w/w of RDN), T4-hydroquinone (HQ @ 0.3% w/w of RDN), T5-calcium carbide (CaC2 @ 1% w/w of RDN), T6-vesicular arbuscular mycorrhiza (VAM @ 10 kg ha-1), T7-(azotobacter @ 50 g kg-1 seeds), T8-(garlic powder @ 0.8% w/w of RDN), T9-(linseed oil @ 0.06% w/w of RDN), T10-(pongamia oil @ 0.06% w/w of RDN).

Results

The highest NH3 volatilization losses were observed in T2 at about 20.4 kg ha-1 per season. Significant reduction in NH3 volatilization losses were observed in T3 by 40%, T4 by 27%, and T8 by 17% when compared to the control treatment. Soil urease activity was found to be decreased in plots receiving amendments, T3, T4, and T5. The highest grain yield was observed in the T7 treated plot with 5.09 t ha-1, and straw yield of 9.44 t ha-1 in T4.

Conclusion

The shifting towards organic amendments is a feasible option to reduce NH3 volatilization from wheat cultivation and improves NUE.

Environment-friendly nitrogen management practices in wetland paddy cultivation

A large amount of nitrogen (N) fertilizer is required for paddy cultivation, but nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in paddy farming is low (20–40%). Much of the unutilized N potentially degrades the quality of soil, water, and air and disintegrates the functions of different ecosystems. It is a great challenge to increase NUE and sustain rice production to meet the food demand of the growing population. This review attempted to find out promising N management practices that might increase NUE while reducing the trade-off between rice production and environmental pollution. We collected and collated information on N management practices and associated barriers. A set of existing soil, crop, and fertilizer management strategies can be suggested for increasing NUE, which, however, might not be capable to halve N waste by 2030 as stated in the “Colombo Declaration” by the United Nations Environment Program. Therefore, more efficient N management tools are yet to be developed through research and extension. Awareness-raising campaign among farmers is a must against their misunderstanding that higher N fertilizer provides higher yields. The findings might help policymakers to formulate suitable policies regarding eco-friendly N management strategies for wetland paddy cultivation and ensure better utilization of costly N fertilizer.

Maintaining higher grain production with less reactive nitrogen losses in China: A meta-analysis study

Managing reactive nitrogen (Nr) in agricultural production is crucial for addressing the triple challenges of food security, climate change and environmental degradation. Intensive work has been conducted to investigate the effects of mitigation strategies on reducing Nr losses by ammonia emission (Nr-NH₃), nitrous oxide emission (Nr-N₂O) and nitrate leaching (Nr-NO₃^-) separately. This meta-analysis evaluated the efficiency of each strategy in mitigating Nr losses coupled with grain yield responses. The results indicate that producing one Megagram (Mg) of wheat grains caused higher Nr losses, twice that of rice and 17% that of maize. The Nr-NH₃ and Nr-NO₃^- were the dominant sources of Nr losses of the three crops (96%), while Nr-NH₃ only presented 86% of the total Nr losses for rice. Reducing the N rate strategy decreased the yield by 33% and the Nr losses by 62% compared with the conventional rate (150-250 kg N ha^-1) as an average of the three crops. In contrast, increasing the N rate higher than 250 kg N ha^-1 amplified the yield by 15% but also caused a 71% increase in Nr losses compared with the conventional rate. Although subsurface application decreased Nr losses by 5%, this study rejected this approach as an effective strategy due to a 4% yield decline on average of the grain crops. Slow-release fertilizers decreased Nr-NH₃ and Nr-N₂O losses by 41-58% and 54-89%, respectively, of the highest losses under urea in the three crops, but also led to yield reductions. Organic amendments achieved the highest drop in Nr-NO₃^- loss by 66% in maize coupled with yield declines. Biochar increased wheat and maize yields by 0.3 and 0.1 Mg, respectively, coupled with 1 kg reduction in Nr losses. On average, inhibitors augmented the grain yields by 0.2 Mg ha^-1 for each 1 kg decline in Nr losses. In conclusion, for sustainable agricultural intensification, biochar (for wheat only) and inhibitors (for the three crops) are strongly recommended as mitigation strategies for Nr losses from grain crop production systems in China.

Recent trends in nitrogen cycle and eco-efficient nitrogen management strategies in aerobic rice system

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is considered as a staple food for more than half of the global population, and sustaining productivity under a scarcity of resources is challenging to meet the future food demands of the inflating global population. The aerobic rice system can be considered as a transformational replacement for traditional rice, but the widespread adaptation of this innovative approach has been challenged due to higher losses of nitrogen (N) and reduced N-use efficiency (NUE). For normal growth and developmental processes in crop plants, N is required in higher amounts. N is a mineral nutrient and an important constituent of amino acids, nucleic acids, and many photosynthetic metabolites, and hence is essential for normal plant growth and metabolism. Excessive application of N fertilizers improves aerobic rice growth and yield, but compromises economic and environmental sustainability. Irregular and uncontrolled use of N fertilizers have elevated several environmental issues linked to higher N losses in the form of nitrous oxide (N2O), ammonia (NH3), and nitrate (NO3 -), thereby threatening environmental sustainability due to higher warming potential, ozone depletion capacities, and abilities to eutrophicate the water resources. Hence, enhancing NUE in aerobic rice has become an urgent need for the development of a sustainable production system. This article was designed to investigate the major challenge of low NUE and evaluate recent advances in pathways of the N cycle under the aerobic rice system, and thereby suggest the agronomic management approaches to improve NUE. The major objective of this review is about optimizing the application of N inputs while sustaining rice productivity and ensuring environmental safety. This review elaborates that different soil conditions significantly shift the N dynamics via changes in major pathways of the N cycle and comprehensively reviews the facts why N losses are high under the aerobic rice system, which factors hinder in attaining high NUE, and how it can become an eco-efficient production system through agronomic managements. Moreover, it explores the interactive mechanisms of how proper management of N cycle pathways can be accomplished via optimized N fertilizer amendments. Meanwhile, this study suggests several agricultural and agronomic approaches, such as site-specific N management, integrated nutrient management (INM), and incorporation of N fertilizers with enhanced use efficiency that may interactively improve the NUE and thereby plant N uptake in the aerobic rice system. Additionally, resource conservation practices, such as plant residue management, green manuring, improved genetic breeding, and precision farming, are essential to enhance NUE. Deep insights into the recent advances in the pathways of the N cycle under the aerobic rice system necessarily suggest the incorporation of the suggested agronomic adjustments to reduce N losses and enhance NUE while sustaining rice productivity and environmental safety. Future research on N dynamics is encouraged under the aerobic rice system focusing on the interactive evaluation of shifts among activities and diversity in microbial communities, NUE, and plant demands while applying N management measures, which is necessary for its widespread adaptation in face of the projected climate change and scarcity of resources.

Is Dairy Effluent an Alternative for Maize Crop Fertigation in Semiarid Regions? An Approach to Agronomic and Environmental Effects

Dairy effluent can be an environmental problem if it is not properly managed. Several application technologies exist for its reuse as a source of nutrients in agricultural crops. Our study provides new information on GHG emissions after the application of dairy effluent through a subsurface drip irrigation system on a semiarid soil of the southern Pampean Region (Argentina). In addition, some edaphic properties are compared with conventional chemical fertilization on the yield of a corn crop, contributing as a proposal for an improvement in agricultural sustainability.

Abstract

The reuse of effluents from intensive dairy farms combined with localized irrigation techniques (fertigation) has become a promising alternative to increase crop productivity while reducing the environmental impact of waste accumulation and industrial fertilizers production. Currently, the reuse of dairy effluents through fertigation by subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) systems is of vital importance for arid regions but it has been poorly studied. The present study aimed to assess the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, soil properties, and crop yield of a maize crop fertigated with either treated dairy effluent or dissolved granulated urea applied through an SDI system at a normalized N application rate of 200 kg N ha⁻¹. Fertilizer application was divided into six fertigation events. GHG fluxes were measured during fertigation (62-day) using static chambers. Soil properties were measured previous to fertilizer applications and at the harvest coinciding with crop yield estimation. A slight increase in soil organic matter was observed in both treatments for the 20–60 cm soil depth. Both treatments also showed similar maize yields, but the dairy effluent increased net GHG emissions more than urea during the fertigation period. Nevertheless, the net GHG emissions from the dairy effluent were lower than the theoretical CO₂eq emission that would have been emitted during urea manufacturing or the longer storage of the effluent if it had not been used, showing the need for life-cycle assessments. Local-specific emission factors for N₂O were determined (0.07%), which were substantially lower than the default value (0.5%) of IPCC 2019. Thus, the subsurface drip irrigation systems can lead to low GHG emissions, although further studies are needed.

Growth, Yield and Photosynthetic Performance of Winter Wheat as Affected by Co-Application of Nitrogen Fertilizer and Organic Manures

The application of organic manures was found to be beneficial, however, the integrated use of organic manures with chemical nitrogen fertilizers has proven more sustainable in increasing the photosynthetic attributes and grain yield of the winter-wheat crop. A multi-factor split-plot design was adopted, nitrogen and manure fertilizer treatments were set in the sub-plots, including nitrogen-gradient treatment of T1:0 kg N ha⁻¹, T2:100 kg N ha⁻¹, T3:200 kg N ha⁻¹, and T4:300 kg N ha⁻¹ (pure nitrogen -fertilizer application) The 25% reduction in nitrogen combined with the manure-fertilizer application includes T5:75 kg N ha⁻¹ nitrogen and 25 kg N ha⁻¹ manure, T6:150 kg N ha⁻¹ nitrogen and 50 kg N ha⁻¹ manure, and T7:225 kg N ha⁻¹ nitrogen and 75 kg N ha⁻¹ manure. The maximum results of the total chlorophyll content and photosynthetic rate were 5.73 mg/g FW and 68.13 m mol m⁻² s⁻¹, observed under T4 in Zhongmai 175, as compared to Jindong 22 at the heading stage. However, the maximum results of intercellular CO₂ concentration were 1998.47 μmol mol⁻¹, observed under T3 in Jindong 22, as compared to Zhongmai 175 at the tillering stage. The maximum results of LAI were 5.35 (cm²), observed under T7 in Jindong 22, as compared to Zhongmai 175 at the booting stage. However, the maximum results of Tr and Gs were 6.31 mmol H₂O m⁻² s⁻¹ and 0.90 H₂O mol m⁻² s⁻¹, respectively, observed under T7 in Zhongmai 175 as compared to Jindong 22 at the flowering stage. The results revealed that grain yield 8696.93 kg ha⁻¹, grains spike⁻¹ 51.33 (g), and 1000-grain weight 39.27 (g) were significantly higher, under T3 in Zhongmai 175, as compared to Jindong 22. Moreover, the spike number plot⁻¹ of 656.67 m² was significantly higher in Jindong 22, as compared to Zhongmai 175. It was concluded from the study that the combined application of nitrogen and manure fertilizers in winter wheat is significant for enhancing seed at the jointing and flowering stages. For increased grain yield and higher economic return, Zhongmai 175 outperformed the other cultivars examined. This research brings awareness toward the nitrogen-fertilizer-management approach established for farmers’ practice, which might be observed as an instruction to increase agricultural management for the winter-wheat-growth season.

An Experimental Study of Paddy Drainage Treatment by Zeolite and Effective Microorganisms (EM)

Eco-ditch systems have increasingly been designed and applied as a strategy to decrease the risks of water eutrophication and contamination pollution for sustainable agriculture. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the water quality of eco-ditch substrates amended with zeolite and Effective Microorganisms (EM), such as pH, dissolved oxygen concentration (DO), ammonium nitrogen concentration (NH4+-N), and nitrate nitrogen concentration (NO3−-N). Laboratory experiments were conducted with four single substrates (soil, none substrates, natural zeolite, and zeolite loaded with EM bacteria) and two mixed substrates (soil and varying proportions of the additives, 0, 5 and 15%, m/m). Results showed that the concentration of NH4+-N was decreased with the increasing rates of additives, and zeolite loaded with EM bacteria had the highest nitrogen removal rate (97.90%) under static experimental condition. The application rate of 15% zeolite loaded with EM bacteria on the eco-ditch exerted a better effect on NH4+-N and NO3−-N removal without pH reduction, decreased by 87.19% for NH4+-N and 30.33% for NO3−-N, respectively. Path analysis showed that zeolite addition had a rapid effect (path coefficient = −0.972) on free NH4+-N ions adsorption in early 1–3 days, then EM loaded at zeolite further decreased NH4+-N (path coefficient = −0.693) and NO3−-N (path coefficient = −0.334) via bacterial metabolism. Based on the results, the applications of natural zeolite and Effective Microorganisms (EM) at an appropriate rate (15%, m/m) can significantly improve water quality of paddy drainage via exerting effects on nitrogen removal.

Methane, Nitrous Oxide, and Ammonia Emissions on Dairy Farms in Spain with or without Bio-Activator Treatment

Intensive livestock farming substantially impacts the environment, especially farm and slurry management. Slurries are significant sources of greenhouse gases and ammonia. The present study was conducted in an intensive livestock production system in Galicia, Spain. The measurements were taken at six different farms in that region along with one control using common management practices in Galicia without the addition of a bio-activator. This study aimed to quantify GHGs and NH3 fluxes and their reductions during slurry treatment using a dynamic chamber through FTIR analysis and to examine the potential of usage of bio-activators for slurry management. In addition, gas concentrations were measured at the barns and compared with their slurry management and architectural volume to obtain influences on their management and the architectural volume of the barns. Additionally, the effects of using a bio-activator in the barns inside the facility areas were addressed. Moreover, qPCR analysis was conducted to understand the correlations between syncoms and methanogen populations when a bio-activator is added to the slurry with at least a 30% reduction in methanogenic populations. The outcomes suggest encouraging results for GHG reductions in the livestock sector, giving farmers future options for climate change mitigation among their standard practices.

Microbial mechanisms of using feruloyl esterase-producing Lactobacillus plantarum A1 and grape pomace to improve fermentation quality and mitigate ruminal methane emission of ensiled alfalfa for cleaner animal production

This study was conducted to investigate the influence of feruloyl esterase-producing Lactobacillus plantarum A1 (Lp A1) and grape pomace (GP) alone, or in combination (LG) on ensiling characteristics and bacterial community, in vitro ruminal fermentation, methane (CH₄) emission, and the microbiota of ensiled alfalfa. Alfalfa at 42% dry matter (DM) was treated in a 2 × 2 factorial design: with the application of Lp A1 at 0 (control) or 1 × 10⁶ cfu/g of fresh forage, and GP at 0 or 5% of fresh forage. After 60 d of ensiling, a decrease in nonprotein nitrogen (NPN) was observed in GP treated silage. Lp A1 inoculated silage had a lower fiber content than silages without Lp A1. The lowest NPN was found in silage treated with LG, and an obvious increase in the relative abundance of Lactobacillus paracasei was detected in silages treated with Lp A1 and LG, respectively. In vitro ruminal experiments indicated that, although the application of GP deceased ruminal total gas, CH₄ production, nitrogen degradation and the number of methanogenic archaea in alfalfa silage, it also reduced silage DM digestibility. In contrast, inoculation with Lp A1 not only increased DM digestibility and populations of ruminal Ruminococcus flavefaciens and fungi, but also improved ruminal total gas and CH₄ production. As expected, LG treatment decreased alfalfa silage ruminal total gas and CH₄ production relative to Lp A1 treatment alone, and increased silage DM digestibility compared with GP treated silage. In conclusion, the application of LG before ensiling alfalfa, balanced silage proteolysis, feed digestibility, and CH₄ emission, and could be a promising strategy for using food industry by-products to produce a nutritional and environmentally-friendly legume silage that will mitigate N and greenhouse gas emissions from ruminants.

Enhancing Sorghum Yield Through Efficient Use of Nitrogen - Challenges and Opportunities

Sorghum is an important crop, which is widely used as food, forage, fodder and biofuel. Despite its natural adaption to resource-poor and stressful environments, increasing yield potential of sorghum under more favorable conditions holds promise. Nitrogen is the most important nutrient for crops, having a dynamic impact on all growth, yield, and grain-quality-determining processes. Thus, increasing nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in sorghum would provide opportunities to achieve higher yield and better-quality grain. NUE is a complex trait, which is regulated by several genes. Hence, exploring genetic diversity for NUE can help to develop molecular markers associated with NUE, which can be utilized to develop high NUE sorghum genotypes with greater yield potential. Research on improving NUE in sorghum suggests that, under water-deficit conditions, traits such as stay-green and altered canopy architecture, and under favorable conditions, traits such as an optimized stay-green and senescence ratio and efficient N translocation to grain, are potential breeding targets to develop high NUE sorghum genotypes. Hence, under a wide range of environments, sorghum breeding programs will need to reconsider strategies and develop breeding programs based on environment-specific trait(s) for better adaptation and improvement in productivity and grain quality. Unprecedented progress in sensor-based technology and artificial intelligence in high-throughput phenotyping has provided new horizons to explore complex traits in situ, such as NUE. A better understanding of the genetics and molecular pathways involving NUE, accompanied by targeted high-throughput sensor-based indices, is critical for identifying lines or developing management practices to enhance NUE in sorghum.

Potential Application of Urease and Nitrification Inhibitors to Mitigate Emissions from the Livestock Sector: A Review

Human activities have caused an increase in greenhouse gas emissions, resulting in climate change that affects many factors of human life including its effect on water and food quality in certain areas with implications for human health. CH₄ and N₂O are known as potent non-CO₂ GHGs. The livestock industry contributes to direct emissions of CH₄ (38.24%) and N₂O (6.70%) through enteric fermentation and manure treatment, as well as indirect N₂O emissions via NH₃ volatilization. NH₃ is also a secondary precursor of particulate matter. Several approaches have been proposed to address this issue, including dietary management, manure treatment, and the possibility of inhibitor usage. Inhibitors, including urease and nitrification inhibitors, are widely used in agricultural fields. The use of urease and nitrification inhibitors is known to be effective in reducing nitrogen loss from agricultural soil in the form of NH₃ and N₂O and can further reduce CH₄ as a side effect. However, the effectiveness of inhibitors in livestock manure systems has not yet been explored. This review discusses the potential of inhibitor usage, specifically of N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide, dicyandiamide, and 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate, to reduce emissions from livestock manure. This review focuses on the application of inhibitors to manure, as well as the association of these inhibitors with health, toxicity, and economic benefits.

Bacillus subtilis Impact on Plant Growth, Soil Health and Environment: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

The increased dependence of farmers on chemical fertilizers poses a risk to soil fertility and ecosystem stability. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are at the forefront of sustainable agriculture, providing multiple benefits for the enhancement of crop production and soil health. Bacillus subtilis is a common PGPR in soil that plays a key role in conferring biotic and abiotic stress tolerance to plants by induced systemic resistance (ISR), biofilm formation, and lipopeptide production. As a part of bioremediating technologies, Bacillus spp. can purify metal contaminated soil. It acts as a potent denitrifying agent in agroecosystems while improving the carbon sequestration process when applied in a regulated concentration. Although it harbors several antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), it can reduce the horizontal transfer of ARGs during manure composting by modifying the genetic makeup of existing microbiota. In some instances, it affects the beneficial microbes of the rhizosphere. External inoculation of B. subtilis has both positive and negative impacts on the endophytic and semi-synthetic microbial community. Soil texture, type, pH, and bacterial concentration play a crucial role in the regulation of all these processes. Soil amendments and microbial consortia of Bacillus produced by microbial engineering could be used to lessen the negative effect on soil microbial diversity. The complex plant-microbe interactions could be decoded using transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and epigenomics strategies which would be beneficial for both crop productivity and the well-being of soil microbiota. Bacillus subtilis has more positive attributes similar to the character of Dr. Jekyll and some negative attributes on plant growth, soil health, and the environment akin to the character of Mr. Hyde.

The Potential for Temporary Stand-Off Pads Integrated With Poplar and Willow Silvopastoral Systems for Managing Nitrogen Leaching

Intensive pastoral farming has been linked to adverse environmental effects such as soil degradation and increased fluxes of nitrogen, phosphorus, sediments, and pathogens into waterways, resulting in their degradation. Stand-off pads are engineered structures covered with bedding materials, available for occupation by stock to minimise those adverse effects to soil and water bodies. Wood chips are ideal for bedding due to their low cost, high water holding capacity, and stock preference as resting areas. While they reduce the mobility of both nutrients and pathogens, their effectiveness depends on the type of wood, size of the chips, pH, pad design, and feeding management used. Dissolved organic carbon, present in wood residue, may slow nitrogen mineralisation thereby decreasing loss via leachate. This effect depends on plant tannins and nutrients already stored within the plant tissue. Poplar and willow have high concentrations of tannins in leaves and bark with potential nitrification-inhibiting properties. When grown on-farm, these deep-rooted trees also reduce nitrogen leaching and prevent soil erosion. This review addresses the use of temporary stand-off pads within poplar or willow silvopastoral systems. Harvested trees can provide suitable wood chips for constructing the stand-off pad, while the deep rooting systems of the trees will reduce the moisture content of the pad, preventing waterlogging. A key objective is to discuss the feasibility and establishment of multiple temporary stand-off pads that allow for stock rotation from pad to pad, and subsequent on-site composting of wood-wastes into fertiliser, reducing both nutrient inputs and losses in agricultural systems. The review highlights the potential suitability of poplar and willow tree species for such a system.

Sustainability of Vertical Farming in Comparison with Conventional Farming: A Case Study in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, on Nitrogen and Phosphorus Footprint

The reduced requirement for nutrients in vertical farming (VF) implies that the potential for lower environmental impact is greater in VF than in conventional farming. In this study, the environmental impacts of VF were evaluated based on a case study of VF for vegetables in Miyagi Prefecture in Japan, where VF has been utilized in post-disaster relief operations in the wake of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. The nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) footprints of these VFs were determined and analyzed to quantify the potential reduction in N and P emissions. First, the N and P footprints in conventional farming were calculated. Then, those footprints were compared with three different scenarios with different ratios for food imports, which equate to different levels of food self-sufficiency. The results show a decrease in the N and P footprints with increased prefectural self-sufficiency due to the introduction of VF. In addition to reducing the risks to food supply by reducing the dependence on imports and the environmental impacts of agriculture, further analysis reveals that VF is suitable for use in many scenarios around the world to reliably provide food to local communities. Its low vulnerability to natural disasters makes VF well suited to places most at risk from climate change anomalies.

Zinc-Coated Urea for Enhanced Zinc Biofortification, Nitrogen Use Efficiency and Yield of Basmati Rice under Typic Fluvents

Deficiency of Zn in human diet is an emerging health issue in many developing countries across the globe. Agronomic Zn biofortification using diverse Zn fertilization options is being advised for enhancing Zn concentration in the edible portion of rice.A field study was carried out to find out the Zn fertilization effects on biofortification of basmati rice and nutrient use efficiencies in the Himalayan foothills region. Amongst the Zn nutrition treatments, 4.0% Zn-coated urea (ZnCU) + 0.2% Zn foliar spray (FS) using ZnSO4·7H2O recorded the highest grain (3.46 t/ha) and straw (7.93 t/ha) yield of basmati rice. On average, the rice productivity increase due to ZnCU application was ~25.4% over Commercial Urea. Likewise, the same Zn fertilization treatment also resulted in the maximum Zn (35.93 and 81.64 mg/kg) and N (1.19 and 0.45%) concentration in grain and straw of rice, respectively. Moreover, N use efficiency (NUE) was also highest when ZnCU was applied at 4.0% (ZnSO4·7H2O) in comparison to soil application. From the grain quality viewpoint, Zn ferti-fortification had significant effect on elongation ratio and protein concentration of grain only and respective Zn fertilization treatment recorded highest quality parameters 1.90 and 7.44%, respectively. Therefore, ZnCU would be an important low-cost and useful strategy for enhancing yield, NUE and biofortification, and also in minimizing the Zn malnutrition related challenges in human diet in many developing economies.

Understanding the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on sustainable agri-food system and agroecosystem decarbonization nexus: A review

The existing finite natural resources have witnessed unsustainable usage in the past few years, especially for food production, with accompanying environmental devastation and ecosystem damage. Regrettably, the global population and consumption demands are increasing ceaselessly, leading to the need for more resources for food production, which could potentially aggravate the sustainability and ecosystem degradation issues, while stimulating drastic climate change. Meanwhile, the unexpected emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic and some implemented measures to combat its spread disrupted agricultural activities and the food supply chain, which also led to a reduction in ecosystem carbonization. This study sets out to explore policy framework and selected feasible actions that are being adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic, which could potentially reduce the emissions even after the pandemic to promote a resilient and sustainable agri-food system. In this study, we reviewed 27 articles that focus on the current state of the agri-food system in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the decarbonization of the agroecosystem. This review has taken the form of a systematic methodology in analyzing the adoption and implementation of various measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 on the impact of the agri-food system and reduction in ecosystem degradation. Up to 0.3 Mt of CO2 reduction from the agri-food system alone was reportedly achieved during the first 6 months of the pandemic in 23 European countries. The various adopted measures indicate that the circular economy approach is a panacea to achieve the needed sustainability in the agri-food system. Also, it dictates a need for a paradigm change towards improvement on localized food production that promotes sustainable production and consumption.

Improving abiotic stress tolerance in sorghum: focus on the nutrient transporters and marker-assisted breeding

Identification of molecular markers and characterization of nutrient transporters could help to improve the tolerance under abiotic and low nutrient stresses in sorghum ensuring higher yield to conserve food security Sorghum is an important cereal crop delivering food and energy security in the semi-arid tropics of the world. Adverse climatic conditions induced by global warming and low input agriculture system in developing countries demand for the improvement of sorghum to tolerate various abiotic stresses. In this review, we discuss the application of marker-assisted breeding and nutrient transporter characterization studies targeted towards improving the tolerance of sorghum under drought, salinity, cold, low phosphate and nitrogen stresses. Family members of some nutrient transporters such as nitrate transporter (NRT), phosphate transporter (PHT) and sulphate transporter (SULTR) were identified and characterized for improving the low nutrient stress tolerance in sorghum. Several quantitative trait loci (QTL) were identified for drought, salinity and cold stresses with an intention to enhance the tolerance of sorghum under these stresses. A very few QTL and nutrient transporters have been identified and validated under low nitrogen and phosphorus stresses compared to those under drought, salinity and cold stresses. Marker-assisted breeding and nutrient transporter characterization have not yet been attempted in sorghum under other macro- and micro-nutrient stresses. We hope this review will raise awareness among plant breeders, scientists and biotechnologists about the importance of sorghum and need to conduct the studies on marker-assisted breeding and nutrient transporter under low nutrient stresses to improve the sorghum production.

Cost-Effective Modern Chemical Sensor System for Soil Macronutrient Analysis Applied to Thai Sustainable and Precision Agriculture

A modern chemical sensor system (M-CSS) was developed for the cost-effective chemical analysis of Thai precision and sustainable agriculture (TPSA), which is suitable in rural Thailand and elsewhere. The aim of this study was to achieve precision and sustainable agriculture (P-SA). The M-CSS functions according to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) definition and incorporates information and communication technologies (ICTs). The developed chemical sensor in the M-CSS is based on a colorimetric determination by a smart device/smartphone. Additionally, the preparation of soil samples was investigated. Soil samples of optimal conditions were extracted using an acid extractant in the ratio of one to two (extract to soil sample). Then, phosphate-phosphorous and potassium were detected with the M-CSS, which showed an excellent correlation with the standard reference methods. Interestingly, it is noteworthy that the at-site analysis of the developed method could detect a greater nitrate-nitrogen content than that of the standard reference method. The developed cost-effective analysis for the plant macronutrient content in the soil, including nitrate-nitrogen, phosphate-phosphorous, and potassium, was demonstrated for organic vegetable farms at the real P-SA research site in Northern Thailand. The obtained results can guide the management of the application of fertilizers. The proposed M-CSS exhibited the potential to be used for at-site soil macronutrient analysis and represents the starting point of Thai precision and sustainable agriculture (TPSA).
