Abstract
Chronic pruritus, or persistent itching, is a debilitating condition that severely impacts quality of life, especially in palliative care settings. Traditional treatments often fail to provide adequate relief or are associated with significant side effects, prompting interest in alternative therapies. This review investigates the antipruritic potential of eight medicinal plants: chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis), calendula (Calendula officinalis), curcumin (Curcuma longa), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), peppermint (Mentha piperita), and evening primrose (Oenothera biennis). These plants are analyzed for their traditional applications, active bioactive compounds, mechanisms of action, clinical evidence, usage, dosage, and safety profiles. Comprehensive searches were conducted in databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and b-on, focusing on in vitro, animal, and clinical studies using keywords like "plant", "extract", and "pruritus". Studies were included regardless of publication date and limited to English-language articles. Findings indicate that active compounds such as polysaccharides in aloe vera, curcuminoids in turmeric, and menthol in peppermint exhibit significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune-modulating properties. Chamomile and calendula alleviate itching through anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing effects, while lavender and licorice offer antimicrobial benefits alongside antipruritic relief. Evening primrose, rich in gamma-linolenic acid, is effective in atopic dermatitis-related itching. Despite promising preclinical and clinical results, challenges remain in standardizing dosages and formulations. The review highlights the necessity of further clinical trials to ensure efficacy and safety, advocating for integrating these botanical therapies into complementary palliative care practices. Such approaches emphasize holistic treatment, addressing chronic pruritus's physical and emotional burden, thereby enhancing patient well-being.

Abstract
Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) are chronic autoimmune diseases characterized by persistent inflammation and oxidative imbalance. Oxidative stress, caused by excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and dysfunction in antioxidant mechanisms, plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of both conditions, leading to increased inflammatory processes and tissue damage. This study aims to review current antioxidant-based therapeutic options and analyze oxidative stress biomarkers in the context of psoriasis and PsA. Based on available literature, key biomarkers, such as malondialdehyde (MDA), advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), were identified as being elevated in patients with psoriasis and PsA. Conversely, antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), showed reduced activity, correlating with symptom severity. The study also examines the efficacy of various antioxidant therapies, including curcumin, resveratrol, coenzyme Q10, and vitamins C and E, which may aid in reducing oxidative stress and alleviating inflammation. The findings indicated that antioxidants can play a significant role in alleviating symptoms and slowing the progression of psoriasis and PsA through modulation of redox mechanisms and reduction of ROS levels. Antioxidant-based therapies offer a promising direction in treating autoimmune diseases, highlighting the need for further research on their efficacy and potential clinical application.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Psoriasis, a widespread skin condition impacting over 100 million individuals globally, is characterised by uncontrolled hyperproliferation of keratinocytes, abnormal apoptosis, and excessive secretion of inflammatory cytokines and angiogenic factors. Traditional use of Alstonia scholaris (L.) R.Br., Wrightia tinctoria (Roxb.) R.Br. and Solanum xanthocarpum Schrad. & Wendl. in Ayurveda and Siddha medicinal systems have shown promising anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. However, underlying mechanisms of their phytoactivity in addressing psoriasis-like skin inflammation on human keratinocytes remain largely unexplored. AIM OF THE STUDY The study was aimed to investigate anti-psoriatic potential of ethyl acetate and ethanolic extracts of A. scholaris, W. tinctoria and S. xanthocarpum in human keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT). MATERIAL AND METHODS Ethyl acetate and ethanolic extracts of A. scholaris (ASEA and ASE), W. tinctoria (WTEA and WTE) and S. xanthocarpum (SXEA and SXE) were first subjected to phytochemical screening through high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using their marker compound loganin, kaempferol and chlorogenic acid, respectively. The proliferation inhibition efficiency of these extracts was measured using MTT assay on HaCaT cell line. Subsequently, the apoptotic effect of these extracts on HaCaT cell line was determined by JC-1 and Annexin V assays. Furthermore, IL-8 and RANTES levels were measured in TNF-alpha-induced HaCaT cell line post-treatment with these extracts to determine their anti-inflammatory properties. RESULTS ASEA, ASE, WTEA, WTE, SXEA and SXE significantly inhibited proliferation of keratinocytes (HaCaT cells) and resulted in the induction of apoptotic markers (mitochondrial membrane potential and phosphatidyl serine externalization). Additionally, pro-inflammatory markers (IL-8 and RANTES levels) were downregulated in HaCaT cells. The anti-proliferative effects were particularly distinct at higher concentrations (200 μg/mL), with inhibition rates reaching over 85% for W. tinctoria and S. xanthocarpum extracts. In apoptotic assays, notable increases in late apoptotic or necrotic cell populations and significant losses in mitochondrial membrane potential were observed. All extracts markedly reduced the secretion of inflammatory mediators IL-8 and RANTES. CONCLUSION All three plants exerted an anti-psoriatic effect at the cellular level via multiple parameters (anti-proliferative, pro-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory effect). This study provides insight into the mechanism of action of ASEA, ASE, WTEA, WTE, SXEA and SXE and highlights their promising potential for development as herbal therapeutic agents for psoriasis. It emphasizes the need for further pharmacological evaluation and toxicological studies of these extracts.

Abstract
Psoriasis is a chronic, relapsing, inflammatory skin disease and has been increasing year by year. It is linked to other serious illnesses, such as psoriatic arthritis, cardiometabolic syndrome, and depression, resulting in a notable decrease in the quality of life for patients. Existing therapies merely alleviate symptoms, rather than providing a cure. An in-depth under-standing of the pathogenesis of psoriasis is helpful to discover new therapeutic targets and develop effective novel therapeutic agents, so it has important clinical significance. This article reviews the new progress in the study of pathogenesis and natural products of psoriasis in recent years. These natural products were summarized, mainly classified as terpenoids, polyphenols and alkaloids. However, the translation of experimental results to the clinic takes a long way to go.

Abstract
Background Curcumin as a polyphenolic compound has a potential capacity to reduce autoimmune reactions by skewing the balance of Thelper1 (Th1)/regulatory T cells (Treg) toward Treg cells. However, the low absorption and bioavailability of this agent have prompted researchers to use various drug delivery systems such as phytosomes to reduce these drawbacks. To date, few studies have evaluated the effects of phytosomal curcumin (nano-curcumin) on immune responses. Hence, we compared the modulatory effects of curcumin in free and phytosomal form on the expression of Th1 and Treg transcription factors, T-bet (T-box-containing protein) and Foxp3 (forkhead box p3), respectively, in a collagen-induced arthritis model (CIA). Materials and Methods Following the induction of CIA, splenocytes were isolated and re-stimulated with collagen in the absence or presence of two different doses of curcumin in free and phytosomal form. Then, expression of T-bet and Foxp3 was assessed by real-time PCR. Results The expression of T-bet was reduced in curcumin and phytosomal curcumin groups rather than in the untreated group. The level of T-bet was not significantly different between free and phytosomal groups. Moreover, mRNA expression of Foxp3 enhanced after treatment with curcumin, while phytosomal curcumin groups showed no difference in comparison with the untreated group. Conclusions curcumin in nano/free form showed a modulatory effect on the expression of T-bet. However, only free-form enhanced Foxp3 expression, which could be owing to the low amount of curcumin in the phytosomal complex rather than free-form at the same dose or due to leakage of curcumin from the complex.

Abstract
The cutaneous microbiome represents a topic of high interest nowadays. Multiple studies have suggested the importance of the skin microbiome in different dermatological pathologies, highlighting the possible implications of cutaneous microorganisms in either the pathogenesis or prognosis of skin maladies. Psoriasis represents a common inflammatory skin disease, with a high prevalence in the worldwide population. The role of the cutaneous microbiome in psoriasis could explain a number of pathogenic theories and treatment objectives of this incurable skin disease. Our interest in the characteristics of the cutaneous microbiome, especially in psoriatic patients who attended a tertiary dermatological centre in Galati, Romania, is reflected in our current study, of which the preliminary results are discussed in this article. Using three types of skin sampling techniques (swabs, adhesive tape, and punch biopsies), we tried to characterise the microorganisms harboured in the skin of psoriatic patients and healthy individuals. This study was performed using culture-based probes, which were analysed using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer equipment. Our preliminary results suggested that the greatest diversity was observed in the perilesional areas of psoriatic patients. The lowest cutaneous diversity was obtained from sampling psoriatic plaques. These results are similar to other studies of the cutaneous microbiome in psoriasis. The most frequent microorganisms found in all groups studied were of the Staphylococcus species: Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus hominis, and Staphylococcus aureus. Analysing the living environment of each individual from this study, our preliminary results suggested different results from other studies, as higher diversity and heterogenicity was observed in urban environments than in rural living areas. Regarding the differences between sexes, our preliminary results showed higher quantitative and qualitative changes in the skin microbiome of male participants than female participants, opposite to the results found in other studies of the cutaneous microbiome in psoriasis. Given these preliminary results, we can conclude that we have found important differences by studying the cutaneous microbiome of psoriatic patients and healthy control individuals from a population that, to our knowledge, has not been yet studied from this point of view. Our results showed important characteristics of the skin microbiome in an Eastern European population, where cultural and environmental living habits could influence the cutaneous microbiome.

Abstract
The oxidation-resistant and multi-functional fish oil powders were produced by co-encapsulating fish oil with essential oils, lutein, and curcumin. The ovalbumin/alginate complex was used as the wall, and the wall-to-oil ratio was fixed at 1:1 based on yield, oil recovery, and internalization efficiency (IE). Surface oil was removed to better understand the characteristics of the fish oil powders. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results indicated that the freeze-dried fish oil powders had irregular shapes with visible pores on the surface. Covalent bonds and electrostatic interactions within the ovalbumin/alginate complex were detected through FTIR. The garlic essential oil-added sample showed the strongest oxidative stability throughout the storage period (30 days). This work showed that fish oil had been encapsulated successfully and multi-functional fish oil powders could be produced by dissolving lipophilic bioactive compounds in fish oil before encapsulation.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of Curcumin and Curcuma longa Extract in the treatment of autoimmune diseases. Methods Databases such as Embase, Web of Science, PubMed and The Cochrane Library were searched from the database establishment to February 2022 to collect RCTs of Curcumin and Curcuma longa Extract in the treatment of autoimmune diseases. Then the literature was screened and the data were extracted. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 software. Results A total of 34 records were included, involving 31 RCTs and 10 types of autoimmune disease. Among them, ankylosing spondylitis (AS) involves one RCT, Behcet ‘s disease (BD) involves one RCT, Crohn ‘s disease involves two RCTs, multiple sclerosis (MS) involves two RCTs, oral lichen planus involves six RCTs, psoriasis involves two RCTs, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) involves five RCTs, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) involves two RCTs, arteritis involves one RCT, ulcerative colitis (UC) involves nine RCTs. Among them, most of the RCTs of ulcerative colitis (UC), oral lichen planus, RA showed that curcumin and curcumin extracts improved clinical or laboratory results. Crohn ‘ s disease, MS, SLE, psoriasis included two RCTs; they all showed improvements (at least one RCT reported improvements in clinical outcomes). AS, BD and arteritis included only one RCT, and the clinical results showed improvement. However, due to the small number of RCTs and the small number of patients involved in each disease, there is still a need for more high-quality RCTs. Conclusion Curcumin and Curcuma longa Extract had good clinical efficacy in the treatment of Psoriasis, UC and RA, so Curcumin and Curcuma longa Extract could be used in the treatment of the above diseases in the future. The results of Meta-analysis showed that Curcumin and Curcuma longa Extract did not show efficacy in the treatment of oral lichen planus, while Takayasu arteritis, SLE, MS, AS, BD and CD did not report sufficient clinical data for meta-analysis. Therefore, large-sample, multi-center clinical trials are still needed for revision or validation.

Abstract
Tendinitis (tendinopathy) is a pro-inflammatory and painful tendon disease commonly linked with mechanical overuse and associated injuries, drug abuse, and lifestyle factors (including poor diet and physical inactivity) that causes significant healthcare expenditures due to its high incidence. Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) is one of the major pro-inflammatory transcription factors, along with other inflammation signaling pathways, triggered by a variety of stimuli, including cytokines, endotoxins, physical and chemical stressors, hypoxia, and other pro-inflammatory factors. Their activation is known to regulate the expression of a multitude of genes involved in inflammation, degradation, and cell death. The pathogenesis of tendinitis is still poorly understood, whereas efficient and sustainable treatment is missing. Targeting drug suppression of the key inflammatory regulators represents an effective strategy for tendinitis therapy, but requires a comprehensive understanding of their principles of action. Conventional monotherapies are often ineffective and associated with severe side effects in patients. Therefore, agents that modulate multiple cellular targets represent therapeutic treatment potential. Plant-derived nutraceuticals have been shown to act as multi-targeting agents against tendinitis via various anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms, whereat they were able to specifically modulate numerous signaling pathways, including NF-κB, p38/MAPK, JNK/STAT3, and PI3K/Akt, thus down-regulating inflammatory processes. This review discusses the utility of herbal nutraceuticals that have demonstrated safety and tolerability as anti-inflammatory agents for the prevention and treatment of tendinitis through the suppression of catabolic signaling pathways. Limitations associated with the use of nutraceuticals are also described.

Abstract
The rapid rise in the health burden associated with chronic wounds is of great concern to policymakers, academia, and industry. This could be attributed to the devastating implications of this condition, and specifically, chronic wounds which have been linked to invasive microbial infections affecting patients' quality of life. Unfortunately, antibiotics are not always helpful due to their poor penetration of bacterial biofilms and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. Hence, there is an urgent need to explore antibiotics-free compounds/formulations with proven or potential antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound healing efficacy. The mechanism of antibiotics-free compounds is thought to include the disruption of the bacteria cell structure, preventing cell division, membrane porins, motility, and the formation of a biofilm. Furthermore, some of these compounds foster tissue regeneration by modulating growth factor expression. In this review article, the focus is placed on a number of non-antibiotic compounds possessing some of the aforementioned pharmacological and physiological activities. Specific interest is given to Aloevera, curcumin, cinnamaldehyde, polyhexanide, retinoids, ascorbate, tocochromanols, and chitosan. These compounds (when alone or in formulation with other biologically active molecules) could be a dependable alternative in the management or prevention of chronic wounds.

Abstract
Psoriasis is a clinically heterogeneous skin disease with an important genetic component, whose pathophysiology is not yet fully understood and for which there is still no cure. Hence, alternative therapies have been evaluated, using plant species such as turmeric (Curcuma longa Linn.) in topical preparations. However, the stratum corneum is a barrier to be overcome, and ionic liquids have emerged as potential substances that promote skin permeation. Thus, the main objective of this research was to evaluate a biopolysaccharide hydrogel formulation integrating curcumin with choline and geranic acid ionic liquid (CAGE-IL) as a facilitator of skin transdermal permeation, in the treatment of chemically induced psoriasis in mice. The developed gel containing curcumin and CAGE-IL showed a high potential for applications in the treatment of psoriasis, reversing the histological manifestations of psoriasis to a state very close to that of normal skin.

Abstract
Psoriasis is one of the most widespread chronic inflammatory skin diseases, affecting about 2%-3% of the worldwide adult population. The pathogenesis of this disease is quite complex, but an interaction between genetic and environmental factors has been recognized with an essential modulation of inflammatory and immune responses in affected patients. Psoriatic plaques generally represent the clinical psoriatic feature resulting from an abnormal proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes, which cause dermal hyperplasia, skin infiltration of immune cells, and increased capillarity. Some scientific pieces of evidence have reported that psychological stress may play a key role in psoriasis, and the disease itself may cause stress conditions in patients, thus reproducing a vicious cycle. The present review aims at examining immune cell involvement in psoriasis and the relationship of depression and stress in its pathogenesis and development. In addition, this review contains a focus on the possible use of natural products, thus pointing out their mechanism of action in order to counteract clinical and psychological symptoms.

Abstract
In the present research work, we addressed the changes in skin by which deep eutectic solvents (DES) enhanced transdermal permeation of bioactive compounds and propose a rationale for this mechanism. Several studies showed that these unusual liquids were ideal solvents for transdermal delivery of biomolecules, but to date, no histological studies relating the action of DES to changes in the structure of the outer skin barrier have been reported. In the research effort described herein, we presented an in-depth analysis of the changes induced in the skin by choline geranate DES, a compound with proven capabilities of enhancing transdermal permeation without deleterious impacts on the cells. The results obtained showed that a low percentage of DES acted as a transient disruptor of the skin structure, facilitating the passage of bioactive compounds dissolved in it.

The Effect of Herbal Medicinal Products on Psoriasis-Like Keratinocytes. Biomolecules 2021; 11:biom11030371. Abstract
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by hyperproliferation of keratinocytes and expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the epidermis. New biological drugs were developed for the systemic treatment of moderate to severe psoriasis. However, products for the topical treatment of mild psoriasis are still required. Here, we examined the effect of natural compounds on psoriasis-like keratinocytes in vitro and ex vivo. Psoriasis-like keratinocytes were generated by treating human primary keratinocytes with the psoriasis-associated cytokines IL-17A, TNF-α and IL-22. Initially, 10 botanical extracts from Ayurvedic Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Northern American traditional medicine and Occidental Monastic Medicine were investigated using BrdU assays and IL-6 and IL-8 ELISAs. Curcuma amada, Humulus lupulus and Hypericum perforatum turned out to be the most effective plant extracts. In vitro, the plant extracts inhibited the expression of anti-microbial peptides (β-defensin 2), the hyperproliferation marker keratin 17, the glucose transporter 1 and downregulated the nuclear translocation of NF-κB and pSTAT3. In an ex vivo psoriasis model, Humulus lupulus displayed the most prominent anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory effect. In conclusion, among the plant extracts investigated, Humulus lupulus showed the most promising anti-psoriatic effect. It is an interesting candidate for topical psoriasis treatment that should be further studied in clinical trials.

Abstract
Chronic inflammation and increased oxidative stress are contributing factors to many non-communicable diseases. A growing body of evidence indicates that dietary nutrients can activate the immune system and may lead to the overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Fatty acids as macronutrients are key players for immunomodulation, with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids having the most beneficial effect, while polyphenols and carotenoids seem to be the most promising antioxidants. Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory disease with multifactorial etiology. Obesity is a major risk factor for psoriasis, which leads to worse clinical outcomes. Weight loss interventions and, generally, dietary regimens such as gluten-free and Mediterranean diet or supplement use may potentially improve psoriasis’ natural course and response to therapy. However, data about more sophisticated nutritional patterns, such as ketogenic, very low-carb or specific macro- and micro-nutrient substitution, are scarce. This review aims to present the effect of strictly structured dietary nutrients, that are known to affect glucose/lipid metabolism and insulin responses, on chronic inflammation and immunity, and to discuss the utility of nutritional regimens as possible therapeutic tools for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

Abstract
Curcumin, resveratrol, and thymoquinone are the potential natural bio-actives reported with good anti-psoriatic activity. However, poor aqueous solubility and limited skin permeation of these natural bio-actives hinder their effective delivery and potential therapeutic outcome. In this regard, current research work focuses on the design and optimization of nanoemulsion (NE) gel formulation for the concurrent delivery of these three drugs. The NE system is consisting of oleic acid as oil phase, Tween 20 as surfactant, and PEG 200 as co-surfactant. The optimized formulation exhibited the droplet size 76.20 ± 1.67 nm, PDI of 0.12 ± 0.05, RI of 1.403 ± 0.007, and viscosity of 137.9 ± 4.07 mp. Carbopol 940 (0.5% w/v) was used as the gelling agent to prepare the NE gel which exhibited a good texture profile. The optimized formulation exhibited a higher % of growth inhibition on A-431 cells and demonstrated good anti-angiogenic activity in the HET-CAM test. Finally, in vivo studies in Balb/c mice model showed improved anti-psoriatic conditions which indicated that the triple natural bio-actives combination in nanoemulgel formulation is effective in the management of psoriasis.

Abstract
Psoriasis is a common, chronic, hyperproliferative, inflammatory skin disease occurring in most ethnic groups in the world. The disease is hereditary but the process of its inheritance is complex and still not fully understood. At the same time, it has been observed that psoriatic lesions may be triggered by certain prooxidative external factors: using narcotics, smoking, drinking alcohol, physical and mental stress, as well as bacterial infections and injury. Since the main physiological marker of psoriasis relates to disorders in the organism's antioxidative system, it is necessary to develop a well-balanced combination of pharmaceuticals and dietary antioxidants to facilitate the effective treatment and/or prevention of the disease. The dietary sources of antioxidants must be adequate for chronic use regardless of the patient's age and be easily available, e.g., as ingredients of regular food or dietary supplements. Diet manipulation is a promising therapeutic approach in the context of modulating the incidence of chronic diseases. Another potentially viable method entails the use of nutrigenomics, which guarantees a multiaspectual approach to the problem, including, in particular, analyses of the genetic profiles of psoriasis patients with the view to more accurately targeting key problems. The present paper pertains to the significance of redox equilibrium in the context of psoriasis. Based on information published in worldwide literature over the last decade, the impact of dietary exogenous antioxidants on the course of this chronic disease was analysed.

Abstract
Background:
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that ingeminates itself with the repeated
proliferation of keratinocytes. It globally strikes a 2-5 % population on an average. Management
of psoriasis remains a daunting task with various challenges influencing treatment, such as patient
conformity and adherence to therapy, delicate patient profiles, psychological aspects, and skin as a
barrier to topical delivery. The first part reviewed pathophysiology, triggering factors, and clinical
classification. The second part reviewed all the therapies, such as topical, oral, biological, parenteral
therapy, phototherapy, and the phyto-pharmaceuticals.
Methods:
The research data related to the existing and upcoming therapies for psoriasis treatment,
several nanocarriers, existing marketed formulations, and detailed description of phytopharmaceuticals
with their mechanism.
Results:
Topical therapy is the mainstay treatment option with limited adverse effects. Biological therapy
has reformed conventional psoriasis treatment by being more efficacious and has increased patient
acceptance due to decreased adverse events. Nanoformulations present an edge over conventional
therapy due to improved anti-psoriatic effect and decreased side effects. Phyto-pharmaceuticals act as
a complementary and alternative therapy for diminishing psoriasis symptoms.
Conclusion:
A rationalized cost-effective patient compliant therapy is required for effective management
and complete cure of psoriasis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Combination of curcumin with anti-inflammatory drug like caffeine shows augmented antipsoriatic action compared to curcumin alone and reduce the time taken for treatment of Psoriasis. OBJECTIVE The objective of the present study was to develop nanosponge (NS) based topical gel of curcumin (CUR) and caffeine (CFN) combination that acts as a potential system for the treatment of psoriasis. METHODS NS composed of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) as crosslinker and beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as polymer were prepared by hot melt method and incorporated in topical gels. Factorial design (32) was constructed in a fully randomized manner to study all nine possible experimental runs. The gels were prepared by varying the content of carbopol-934 (gelling agent) (X1) and guar gum (polymer) (X2). The effect of these two independent variables on viscosity (Y1) and in vitro percent drug release (Y2) of prepared gels was evaluated. Other evaluation studies for NS and nanogels were conducted. In vivo animal studies were carried out for optimized formulation using mouse model of imiquimod-induced psoriasis. RESULTS The physical and chemical characteristics exhibited by the prepared NS and gels (F1-F9) were found to be optimal. The optimization resulted in achieving formulation N10 with 69.72% in vitro drug release and 12,329.78cp viscosity. Histopathology studies revealed that prepared nanogel has promising anti-psoriatic activity. The results concluded that CUR and CFN combination has reduced the time required for showing anti-psoriatic activity to 10 days when compared to CUR alone that took around 20 days. Moreover, the nanogel has depicted sustained drug release till 12 h. CONCLUSIONS From the experimental findings it has been concluded that CUR and CFN combination significantly augmented the anti-psoriatic efficacy with respect to individual components and also reduced the time required for onset of effect. Thus, the proposed nanogel would be an imperative drug delivery system for more effective anti-psoriatic therapy. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
Psoriasis is an immune-mediated, chronic and recurrent inflammatory skin disease, prevalent worldwide, and represents an important burden in life quality of patients. The most common clinical variant is termed as psoriasis vulgaris or plaque psoriasis, which with an individualized and carefully monitored therapy can decrease the patients' morbidity and improving their life quality. The aim is to achieve disease control, minimize the adverse drug effects, and tailor the treatment to individual patient factors. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is based on local or systemic administration of a non-toxic photosensitizer followed by irradiation with a particular wavelength to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), mainly highly cytotoxic singlet oxygen (1O2). The generation of these species results in the attack to substrates involved in biological cycles causing necrosis and apoptosis of affected tissues. Photosensitizers are found in natural products and also obtained by partial syntheses from abundant natural starting compounds. They can be isolated at low cost and in large amounts from plants or algae. Therefore, this manuscript reviews the use of molecules from vegetal sources as photosensitizer agents for the PDT of psoriasis. Psoriasis pathogenesis, management and treatment were reviewed. PDT principles, fundamentals and utilization for the treatment of psoriasis were also discussed. Photosensitizers for PDT of psoriasis are also reviewed focusing on those from vegetal sources. Despite the PDT is utilized for the treatment of psoriasis, very little amount of photosensitizers from plant sources are utilized, such as chlorophyll derivatives and hypericin; however, other natural photosensitizers such as curcumin, could also be investigated. They could constitute a very important, safe and cheap alternative for the successful photodynamic treatment of psoriasis.

Abstract
Herbal extracts and isolated plant compounds play an increasing role in the treatment of skin disorders and wounds. Several new herbal drugs, medicinal products and cosmetic products for the treatment of various skin conditions have been developed in recent years. In this nonsystematic review, we focus on herbal drugs that were tested in controlled clinical studies or in scientifically sound preclinical studies. The herbal biomedicines are intended to treat atopic dermatitis (St. John's wort, licorice, tormentil, bitter substances, evening primrose), psoriasis (araroba tree, lace flower, barberry bark, indigo, turmeric, olibanum, St. John's wort), actinic keratosis (birch bark, petty spurge), herpes simplex (lemon balm, sage and rhubarb), rosacea (green tea, licorice, tormentil) and acne vulgaris (tea tree oil, green tea, hop), or to improve photo protection (green tea, Dyer's weed, cocoa tree, carotinoids, licorice), aesthetic dermatology (licorice, pine bark, gotu kola) and wound healing (birch bark, onion).

Abstract
Topical treatment is the cornerstone for the management of mild to moderate psoriasis. Despite efforts in drug development, patient's satisfaction with the available topical treatments is limited. A strategy to improve safety, efficacy and comfort of topical treatment provides the development of new drug delivery and drug carrier systems. This review provides an overview of recent advances in this field with a focus on psoriasis. Laser-assisted drug delivery, foam formulations, nanoparticles, ethosomes, and niomes are considered. Hopefully, these new developments will improve topical drug therapy and patient satisfaction.
