Prevalence and molecular epidemiology of human papillomavirus infection in italian women with cervical cytological abnormalities

Genotype Distribution and Prevalence of Human Papillomavirus Infection in Women in Northern Jiangsu Province of China

Objective

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the risk factor for cervical cancer. Consequently, HPV DNA testing is an essential method for cervical cancer screening. Yet, data on the prevalence and genotype distribution of HPV and cervical cytological among women in northern Jiangsu Province of China are very limited.

Materials and Methods

A total of 36,500 women were enrolled at the Department of Pathology of Jinhu County People’s Hospital between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2019. HPV genotypes was performed using YanengBio^® Human Papillomavirus Genotyping Kit. Thin liquid cytology tests (TCT) were conducted, based on cytology conditions set by Bethesda in 2001.

Results

The overall prevalence of HPV infection was 28.95%; it was age-dependent; the number of infections was highest in the 40–49 age group. Six thousand three hundred eighty-two women (16.87%) were found to have a pure high-risk HPV infection, while 918 women (2.43%) were found to have a pure low-risk HPV infection. The 6 most predominant genotypes were HPV 52, 58, 16, 53, 56, and 33. Moreover, 8923 women (45.09%) were affected by ASCUS, 4531 (22.90%) by LSIL, 3726 (18.83%) by ASC-H, and 2610 (13.19%) by HSIL.

Conclusion

This study revealed a high burden of HPV infection among women in northern Jiangsu Province of China and identified the distribution of the prevalent top 6 HPV genotypes in this area, which can be used as a useful reference for future work.

The prevalence of 30 HPV genotypes detected by EUROArray HPV in cervical samples among unvaccinated women from Vojvodina province, Serbia

This study evaluates the pre-vaccination prevalence of HPV infection in women from Vojvodina, Serbia, according to age and cytological status. A total of 1,495 women, ranging from 18 to 65 years of age, with different cytological results were enrolled. The HPV genotyping assay was performed using the EUROArray HPV test in order to detect thirty genitally relevant HPV subtypes. In our study, the most prevalent genotypeswere HPV 16, 31, 51, and 53. Among these, HPV 16 was consistently present in all cytological subgroups. Twelve HPV genotypes classified as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1) were detected in 77.8.0% of HSIL/ASCH and 55.0% of NILM with abnormal colposcopy findings. Six possible carcinogens—HRs (group 2B) were often found in women with normal cytology (14.8%) and mild abnormalities (ASCUS and LSIL), but with lower frequence in HSIL/ASCH lesions (7.1%). HPVs 6 and 11(Group 3) were not found in the cases of HSIL/ASCH. Unclassified HPV types were equally distributed in all cytology groups: 20.7%, 19.1%, 16.3% and 13% of NILM, ASCUS, LSIL and HSIL/ASCH, respectively. Our findings highlight that majority of abnormal Pap test results are caused by Group 1 HPVs among women from our region. Low frequency HPVs of group 2A/2B, especially HSIL/ASCH, supports the conclusion that individual genotypes require consideration of each type as an individual agent. We expect a positive impact of HPV vaccine in reducing HPV-associated cervical lesions among women from Vojvodina province, after establishing vaccination programs in our country.

High grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia positive biopsy: the importance of accurate pre-operative workup

BACKGROUND

In cervical cancer screening programs, women with abnormal cytology and confirmation by biopsy are referred for colposcopy for histological evaluation.

METHODS

We characterized the presence and the genotype of HPV by Linear Array HPV genotyping assay in cytological samples collected from about 400 women undergoing conization, with reported high CIN grade after biopsy.

RESULTS

The most prevalent genotype was HPV 16, with an increasing presence depending on the severity of the CIN and with the highest incidence in the 26-35 age range. In the group of younger women (<25) we found the highest percentage of CIN3 (39.3%) and the lowest of CIN1 (17.9%). An increase of CIN1 with increasing age was observed. A different distribution of HPV presence was observed depending on CIN grade (P<0.001): CIN1 HPV negative samples were 46.3%, CIN2: 5.8% and CIN3: 1.4%. Interesting, in the analyzed cohort, we observed the presence of 30% of CIN1. Moreover, within CIN1, 85% of them were associated to negative HPV detection, this observation suggested that the detection of HPV presence may be useful to identify low CIN grade that should be reconsidered for surgical treatment.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings suggest implementing the protocol for the management of women with high risk precancer lesions, with a further HPV test before surgical treatment. The evaluation of HPV presence and genotype before conization might represent a useful tool in reducing or postpone the conization treatment.

Genotype distribution and prevalence of human papillomavirus among women with cervical cytological abnormalities in Xinjiang, China

Background: Genotype distribution and prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) among women vary from different regions and crowds, prophylactic HPV vaccin could prevent some diseases related to HPV, which include cervical precancerous lesions and cancer. Baseline surveys prior to mass HPV vaccination are critical to determine vaccine efficacy and detect changes in HPV type after vaccination. Objective: The aim of this study is to study the HPV type-specific prevalence in 698 women with cytological abnormalities, aging from 18 to 77 years old. Additionally, the association between HPV infection and cervical disease was investigated as well. Methods: A total of 698 cervical specimens of cytological abnormalities were collected from the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University. The Thinprep liquid-based cytologic test (TCT) was performed and the cytological status was classified according to Bethesda 2001. The samples were tested HPV genotype by the PCR-based hybridization gene chip assay. Results: Overall, the HPV prevalence was 54.87%, and it was shown to be age dependent, and with the decreasing and zigzag prevalence until the age of 55 years. 204 patients (53.26%) were infected with pure high-risk HPV, 139 (36.30%) with pure low-risk HPV, and 40 (10.44%) with mixed HPV types. HPV16 was the most common type (35.36%), followed by HPV58 (13.62%) and HPV52 (9.15%). In this study, 386 (55.30%) were affected by ASCUS, 11 (1.58%) by ASC-H, 137 (19.63%) by L-SIL and 151 (21.63%) by H-SIL. Women with a cytology result of ASCUS, ASC-H, L-SIL and H-SIL had the infection of HPV 39.12%, 54.17%, 70.80% and 80.79% respectively. Conclusions: In conclusion, this study presents the first investigation about the prevalence of HPV infection and HPV genotype distribution in Xinjiang women who have abnormal cytological tests. Prior to HPV immunization in Xinjiang's population, our results could be baseline data and validation set, which provide robust available estimates of the prevalence of type-specific HPV.

Prevalence of cervical cancer and pre-cancerous lesions among unscreened Women in Kumasi, Ghana

Ghana does not have a universal population-based cervical cancer screening program and there is very limited information about the distribution of cervical epithelial cell lesions. This study provides evidence that a moderately high prevalence of cervical cancer and precancerous lesions exists among unscreened women in Kumasi.The prevalence of cervical epithelial cell abnormalities among a cross-section of women attending cervical cancer screening for the first time in a suburb of Ghana from 2011 to 2014 was studied. Cervical smears were prepared and examined independently by 2 cytotechnologists and confirmed by a pathologist. Cervical lesions were classified according to the Bethesda System for cervical cytology 2001.Out of the 592 women for whom a Pap smear was available for evaluation, 555 (93.8%) were negative for intraepithelial lesion or malignancy. Eight women (1.4%) showed atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS), 9 (1.4%) low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions, and 2 (0.3%) high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions. A total of 15 (2.5%) smears were unsatisfactory for cervical cytology. Additionally, 3 women (0.5%) had squamous cell carcinoma, giving an overall rate of 3.7% for epithelial cell abnormalities.Cervical cancer and precursor epithelial cell abnormalities are common among women in Kumasi for a disease that can be prevented by early detection through routine screening and management. This study provides adequate background data to recommend the implementation of cervical cancer screening in all eligible women in Ghana.

The Prevalence of Genus Alpha Human Papillomavirus in Women with Uterine Cervical Infection and/or Inflammation in Western Iran

Introduction:

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is strongly associated with risk of cervical cancer and genital warts.

Aim:

The study aimed to report the prevalence of genus alpha human papillomavirus (HPV) types in women with cervical infection and/or inflammatory in Western Iran.

Materials and Methods:

In a cross-sectional study, 435 women were clinically diagnosed with cervical infections. The method of HPVs detection was polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The majority of patients (304 patients) did Pap smear based on liquid-based specimens.

Results:

Out of 435 patients, 150 patients (34.5%) had HPV positivity that the prevalence of high-risk HPVs was 52.7%. Out of 76 patients with Pap smear positivity, 68.4% had atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance cytology class and 31.6% had low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion cytology class. The most prevalence rate of HPV was in age ≤30 years. HPV 16 and HPV 56 were the most prevalence rate among high-risk HPVs. Overall HPV alpha-10 (59%) and HPV alpha-9 (32.2%) had the most prevalence rate.

Conclusions:

Among high-risk HPVs, HPV 16 was the most common HPV detected in our population with a very low prevalence of HPV 18. In addition, HPV 6 and then HPV 11 had the most prevalence rate in the women with uterine cervix (cervical) infection among low-risk HPVs.

Comparison of Siriraj liquid-based solution and standard transport media for the detection of high-risk human papillomavirus in cervical specimens

PURPOSE

To evaluate the performance of Siriraj liquid-based solution for human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing compared with standard transport media.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study enrolled 217 women aged 30 years or older who attended for cervical cancer screening or had abnormal cervical cytology, or were diagnosed with cervical cancer at the Department of Obstetrics-Gynecology, Siriraj Hospital from March 2015 to January 2016. We excluded patients with a history of any cervical procedures, hysterectomy, or previous treatment with pelvic irradiation or chemotherapy. Two cervical specimens were collected from each participant. The standard Cervi-Collect Specimen Collection Kit was used to preserve the first sample, and Siriraj liquid-based solution was used for the second one. All samples were sent for HPV DNA testing using the same standard high-risk HPV assay. HPV test results were recorded and statistically analyzed.

RESULTS

The results showed agreement between standard transport media and Siriraj liquid-based solution for HPV DNA testing, at a kappa value of 0.935 (P < 0.001). We found no discorrelation for the detection of HPV 16, which accounts for approximately 50% of cervical cancers. The relative sensitivity of Siriraj liquid-based solution and standard transport media in patients with high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia or worse (CIN2+) is 98% (50/51). The relative specificity of Siriraj liquid-based solution and standard transport media in patients with non-CIN2+ is 98.1% (102/104).

CONCLUSION

Siriraj liquid-based solution showed almost perfect agreement with the standard transport media for HPV DNA testing. This solution, costing 2 to 3 times less than the commercially available standard media, may be an alternative option for HPV DNA testing.

Detection and Genotyping of HPV DNA in a Group of Unvaccinated Young Women from Colombia: Baseline Measures Prior to Future Monitoring Program

In 2012, Colombia launched human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program for girls ages 9 to 12, and in 2013, the target age was expanded to 9 to 17 years. Monitoring the changes of HPV infection prevalence among young women has been proposed as an endpoint for early assessment of HPV vaccination programs. However, the data on HPV prevalence in young ages are very limited. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of HPV infection and the distribution of genotypes in a group of nonvaccinated women ages 18 to 25 years old in three Colombian cities as baseline for the monitoring of the HPV national vaccination program. A total of 1,782 sexually active women were included. Cervical smear samples were collected to perform the Pap smear and HPV DNA detection using a Linear Array HPV assay. Of the 1,782 specimens analyzed, 60.3% were positive for any HPV type; 42.2% were positive for high-risk HPV (HR-HVP) types, and 44.4% for low-risk HPV (LR-HPV) types. Multiple and single infections were identified in 37.1% and 23.2% of samples, respectively. HR-HPV types -16, -52, and -51 were the most predominant with proportions of 11.3%, 7.92%, and 7.9%, correspondingly. The prevalence for HR-HPV 16/18 was 14.4%. HR-HPV prevalence in women with abnormal cytology (75.16%) was higher than in women with normal cytology (38.6%). In conclusion, a high prevalence of HR-HPV was observed among younger women. This HPV type-specific prevalence baseline may be used to monitor postvaccination longitudinal changes and to determine its impact on HPV-related disease incidence in Colombia population. Detection and genotyping of human papillomavirus (HPV) in HIV-infected women and its relationship with HPV/HIV co-infection

HPV have been identified as high-risk and low-risk, depending on their association with the development of cancer. HPV infections can be facilitated by co-infection with HIV. Here, we investigated HPV prevalence and genotypes and the risk factors affecting HPV/HIV co-infection. Forty HIV-positive patients had 80 cervical swab samples collected in 2 consecutive years. Polymerase chain reaction and DNA direct sequencing were used to perform HPV genotyping. Statistical analyses were performed regarding risk factors for HPV/HIV co-infection and the occurrence of cervical lesions. HPV DNA was detected in 59 samples (73.75%), and high-risk HPVs were predominant (59.3%). The most prevalent type was HPV56 (17%), followed by HPV16 (15.3%). Patient age did not affect the risk of cervical cancer (P = .84) or HPV prevalence in different years (P = .25/P = .63). CD4 count also did not affect the risk for cervical lesions in the tested samples (P = .15/P = .28). Although the HIV viral load was not correlated with an increase in cervical lesion detection in the first group of analyzed samples (P = .12), it did affect cervical cancer risk in the group of samples analyzed in the following year (P = .045). HIV-infected patients presented a high prevalence of HPV co-infection, and HPV16 and HPV56 were the most prevalent genotypes. Considering this, it is possible that immunodeficiency can contribute to increased susceptibility to HPV56 infection in HIV-infected patients. The association between HIV viral load and the lesions also confirmed the importance of monitoring HIV/HPV co-infected patients with high HIV viral loads.

Possible Synergistic Interactions Among Multiple HPV Genotypes in Women Suffering from Genital Neoplasia

Objective:

Persistence of HPV infection is the true cause of cervical disorders. It is reported that competition may exist among HPV genotypes for colonization. This survey was designed to establish the multiple HPV genotype status in our community and the probability of multiple HPV infections involvement.

Methods:

All multiple HPV infections were selected for investigation in women suffering from genital infections referred to private laboratories in Tehran, Iran. A total of 160 multi HPV positive specimens from cervical scraping were identified by the HPV genotyping methods, “INNO-LiPA and Geno Array”.

Result:

In present study, HPV 6 (LR), 16 (HR), 53 (pHR), 31 (HR) and 11 (LR) were included in 48.8% of detected infections as the most five dominant genotypes. HPV 16 was detected at the highest rate with genotypes 53, 31 and 52, while HPV 53 appeared linked with HPV 16, 51 and 56 in concurrent infections. It appears that HPV 16 and 53 may have significant tendencies to associate with each other rather than with other genotypes. Analysis of the data revealed there may be some synergistic interactions with a few particular genotypes such as “HPV 53”.

Conclusion:

Multiple HPV genotypes appear more likely to be linked with development of cervical abnormalities especially in patients with genital infections. Since, there are various patterns of dominant HPV genotypes in different regions of world, more investigations of this type should be performed for careHPV programs in individual countries.

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Genital Human Papillomavirus Infections Among Women in Southwest Nigeria

There is a great variation in the prevalence of cervical HPV infection worldwide with some of the highest rates being found in African women. Early onset of sexual activity (≤ 15 age), multiparity and sexual promiscuity have been recognized as some of the significant risk factors for HPV infection. In Nigeria, there is scarcity of data on the degree of relationship between these factors and the prevalence of HPV infection. Thus, this study was designed to determine the prevalence of genital HPV infection with its potential risk factors among women in Southwest Nigeria. Cervical swab specimen was collected from 295 consenting women including those presenting for routine cervical cancer screening, STI clinic attendees and women who attended community based outreach programmes. Viral DNA was extracted from the swab samples using commercially available DNA extraction Kit and amplified by PCR using two set of consensus primers (PGMY09/11 and degenerate GP-E6/E7). Fifty-five samples were positive to HPV DNA giving a prevalence of 18.6%. Risk factors such as lack of formal education (P-value: 0.003), divorcee (P-value: 0.019), polygamy (P-value: 0.027), unemployment (P-value: 0.023), low income earnings (P-value: 0.018), younger age (<18years) at sexual debut (P-value: 0.039) and passive smoking (P-value: 0.017) were significantly associated with HPV infection. High HPV prevalence and associated risk factors observed in this study shows the continuous transmission of the virus in Southwest Nigeria. Hence, enlarged monitoring including intense public awareness and cervical cancer screening is urgently needed for prevention and control strategies.

Six years genotype distribution of Human Papillomavirus in Calabria Region, Southern Italy: a retrospective study

BACKGROUND

Although analysis of the Human papillomavirus (HPV) genotype spread in a particular area has a crucial impact on public health and prevention programmes, there is a lack of epidemiological data regarding HPV in the Calabria region of Italy. We therefore update information on HPV age/genotype distribution by retrospectively analysing a cohort of women, with and without cervical lesions, living in Calabria, who underwent HPV DNA testing; moreover, we also evaluated HPV age/genotype distribution in a subset of patients with cervical lesions.

METHODS

Cervical scrape specimens obtained from 9590 women (age range 20-75 years) from January 2010 to December 2015 were tested for HPV DNA. Viral types were genotyped by Linear Array HPV Genotyping® test (Roche, USA) at the Clinical Microbiology Operative Unit of six hospitals located in four provinces of the Calabria region. Cervical scrape specimens were also used to perform Pap smears for cytological analysis in a subset of 405 women; cytological classification of the samples was performed according to the Bethesda classification system.

RESULTS

A total of 2974 women (31%) (C.I. 95% 30.09-31.94) were found to be HPV DNA positive for at least one (57.3%) or several (42.7%) HPV genotypes. Of single genotype HPV infections, 46.5% and 36.4 % were classed as high-risk (HR, Group 1) and low-risk (LR, Group 3) respectively, while 16.9% were classed as probably/possibly carcinogenic and 0.2% undetermined risk. Stratified by age, total HPV distribution, showed the highest prevalence within the range 30-39 years (37.2%), while single genotype infection distribution displayed a peak in women from the age range 20-29 years (37.5%). The most common high-risk HPV type was HPV 16 (19.1%), followed by HPV 31 (9.1%).

CONCLUSIONS

We provide epidemiological data on HPV age/genotype distribution in women living in the Calabria region with or without cytological abnormalities, further to the enhancement of HPV screening/prevention programmes for the local population.

HPV prevalence and type distribution in Cypriot women with cervical cytological abnormalities

BACKGROUND

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted agent, and it can cause cervical lesions and cancer in females. Currently, information regarding the prevalence of HPV in Cyprus is lacking. The aim of this study was to evaluate the HPV type-specific prevalence in 596 women, aged 19-65 years, with cytological abnormalities. Additionally, in a subset of 348 women for whom cytology results of the Pap test were available, the association between HPV infection and cervical disease was investigated.

METHODS

HPV detection and typing was carried out using PCR and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis, respectively.

RESULTS

Overall, the HPV prevalence was 72.8%, and it was shown to be age dependent, with a decreasing prevalence until the age of 45 years (p = 0.0018, χ²). Two hundred and fifty-eight women (59.4%) were infected with high-risk HPV, 151 (34.8%) with low-risk HPV, and 25 (5.8%) with HPV types of unknown risk. The most common high-risk HPV type was HPV16 (17.7%), followed by HPV31 (12.9%), HPV58 (7.1%), HPV68 (4.6%), HPV18 (4.1%), and HPV56 (3.7%). Among the women for whom cytology results were available, 268 (77%) were HPV positive, with a sample distribution as follows: 188 (74%) had atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS), 61 (85.9%) had low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (L-SIL), and 19 (82.6%) had high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (H-SIL). HPV16 was the most common type among women affected by L-SIL (19.7%) and H-SIL (15.8%), with HPV31 being the most common type in women affected by ASCUS (16.5%).

CONCLUSIONS

The present study provides the first epidemiological data related to HPV prevalence and type distribution in Cypriot women with cytological abnormalities.

Shift in prevalence of HPV types in cervical cytology specimens in the era of HPV vaccination

The aim of the present population-based cohort study was to analyze the association between the prevalence of 32 types of human papilloma virus (HPV) in 615 female patients with abnormal cervical cytopathology findings. In total, 32 HPV types were screened by DNA array technology. HPV infection was detected in 470 women (76.42%), 419 of whom (89.15%) were infected with ≥1 high-risk (HR)-HPV type. HPV16, which is recognized as the main HR-HPV type responsible for the development of cervical cancer, was observed in 32.98% of HPV⁺ participants, followed by HPV42 (18.09%), HPV31 (17.66%), HPV51 (13.83%), HPV56 (10.00%), HPV53 (8.72%) and HPV66 (8.72%). The prevalence of HR-HPV types, which may be suppressed directly (in the case of HPV16 and 18), or possibly via cross-protection (in the case of HPV31) following vaccination, was considerably lower in participants ≤22 years of age (HPV16, 28.57%; HPV18, 2.04%; HPV31, 6.12%), compared with participants 23-29 years of age (HPV16, 45.71%; HPV18, 7.86%; HPV31, 22.86%), who were less likely to be vaccinated. Consequently, the present study hypothesizes that there may be a continuous shift in the prevalence of HPV types as a result of vaccination. Furthermore, the percentage of non-vaccine HR-HPV types was higher than expected, considering that eight HPV types formerly classified as 'low-risk' or 'probably high-risk' are in fact HR-HPV types. Therefore, it may be important to monitor non-vaccine HPV types in future studies, and an investigation concerning several HR-HPV types as risk factors for the development of cervical cancer is required.

Prevalence and predictors of Pap smear cervical epithelial cell abnormality among HIV-positive and negative women attending gynecological examination in cervical cancer screening center at Debre Markos referral hospital, East Gojjam, Northwest Ethiopia

BACKGROUND

Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer related death among women in developing countries. Cervical cancer is preceded by cervical surface epithelial cell abnormalities (ECA) which can be detected by Pap smear test. Simultaneous human papillomavirus and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection increases cervical cancer. Data on the prevalence and predictors of ECA among women in Ethiopia is limited. Hence, we aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of ECA among women.

METHODS

A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted among HIV+ and HIV- women attending gynecological examination in cervical cancer screening center at the Debre Markos referral hospital. The study subjects were stratified by HIV status and systematic random sampling method was used to recruit study participants. Cervical smears were collected for Pap smear examination. Logistic regression analysis was employed to examine the possible risk factors of cervical ECA.

RESULTS

A total of 197 HIV+ and 194 HIV- women were enrolled in the study. The overall prevalence of cervical ECA was 14.1 % of which the prevalence of atypical squamous cells undetermined significance (ASCUS), low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL), high grade SIL, squamous cell carcinoma and ASC, cannot exclude high grade SIL (ASCH) were 5.1, 3.8, 4.1 and 1.0 %, 0.0 % respectively. Significantly higher prevalence of ECA (17.8 %) was observed among HIV+ women (COR 1.9, 95 % CI: 1.1 - 3.4, p = 0.036) as compared to HIV-women (10.3 %). Multiple sexual partnership (AOR 3.2, 95 % CI: 1.1 - 10.0, p = 0.04), early ages of first sexual contact (<15 years) (AOR 5.2, 95 % CI: 1.5 - 17.9, p = 0.009), parity greater than three (AOR 10.9, 95 % CI: 4.2 - 16.8, p < 0.001) and long term oral contraceptive pills (OCP) use (AOR 11.9, 95 % CI: 2.1 - 16.7, p = 0.02) were significant predictors of prevalence of ECA.

CONCLUSIONS

Cervical ECA is a major problem among HIV-infected women. Lower CD4+ T-cell counts of below 350 cells/μl, HIV infection, multiple sexual partnership, early age at first sexual contact, parity greater than three and long term OCP use were significant predictors of prevalence of ECA. Strengthening screening program in HIV+ women should be considered.

Epidemiology and genotype distribution of high risk human papillomavirus in population of hospital opportunistic screening

This study aimed to determine the prevalence of high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) in population of hospital opportunistic screening and to identify the correlation of prevalent genotypes and cervical cytological abnormalities. A cross-sectional study was employed between July 2013 and July 2014 in the Chaoyang hospital, in Beijing. Cervical samples were collected for the Type-specific HPV and the cervical cytological analyses in the population of hospital opportunistic screening. Total of 8975 samples from female patients aged 17-86 years were tested. Of these, 10.4% were infected by HR-HPV, the highest prevalence of HR-HPV in the youngest group and decreasing with aging (X(2)=19.68, P=0.02). Of these, 78.73% were single infections and 21.27% were multiple infections. Age-specific prevalence of multiple HPV exhibited a "U" shaped curve (X(2)=19.98, P=0.018). The most prevalent genotype is HPV 52, then descending order of frequency were HPV-58, 16, 39, 51, 56, 59, 18, 31, 33, 35, 68 and 45. 15.9% had an abnormal cytology in HR-HPV positive women, vs 4.13% in HR-HPV negative women. The prevalence of HR-HPV were 9.2%, 26.8%, 32%, 35.3% and 36.4% in normal cell, ASCUS, LSIL, ASC-H and HSIL, respectively (X(2)=234.67, P=0.000). Women with HPV 52, 16, 18, 58, 39, 51, 59, 56, 33, 31 infections related to the abnormal cytology, while the HPV68, 45, 35 didn't. The prevalent characteristic in population of the hospital opportunistic screening is similar to the population of cervical screen, But the most five prevalent genotype in rank are different .Women with HR-HPV infections were more likely to have the cervical abnormal cytology.

Prevalence of sexually transmitted pathogens associated with HPV infection in cervical samples in a Mexican population

Cervical cancer development has been mainly associated with persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infections. However, HPV infection is unlikely to be sufficient to cause cervical cancer, and the contribution of other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) could be the determining factor for cervical lesion-progression. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of STIs associated with HPV-positivity in 201 cervical samples from patients who underwent annual routine gynecological exams. The overall prevalence of STIs was 57.7%, and the most frequent infection was Ureaplasma spp (UP) (39.8%), followed by Gardnerella vaginalis (GV) (25.9%), α-HPV (18.4%), Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) (1.5%), and Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) (0.5%). The highest prevalence rate of multiple non-HPV infections was observed for the age-range 31-40; for papillomavirus infection, the age-range was 21-30. In normal cervical samples, HPV16 was the most prevalent genotype (24.3%), followed by genotypes 58 (13.5%) and 52 (10.8%). Intriguingly, HPV18 was not detected in the study population, and genotypes 52 and 58 were found exclusively in samples with abnormal cytology. Papillomavirus infection with oncogenic types was significantly associated with GV (P = 0.025) and strongly associated with multiple non-HPV pathogens (P = 0.002). The following variables correlated significantly with cytological diagnosis of low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL): GV (P = 0.028), multiple non-HPV infections (P = 0.001), and high-risk HPV positivity (P = 0.001). Epidemiological data from this study will contribute to the molecular detection of sexually transmitted pathogens from screening programs to identify those women who are at risk for developing cervical lesions.

Human papillomavirus genotypes distribution by cervical cytologic status among women attending the General Hospital of Loandjili, Pointe-Noire, Southwest Congo (Brazzaville)

HPV infection is associated with cervical cancer, one of the major public health problems in developing countries. In the Republic of Congo, despite of the high age-standardized incidence rate estimated at 25.2 per 100,000 women, molecular epidemiology data on HPV infections are very limited. We investigated HPV genotypes distribution in cervical smears among patients attending the General Hospital of Loandjili, Southwest Congo. A cross-sectional hospital-based study was conducted on 321 women. Liquid-based cytology samples were collected for cytological diagnosis and HPV detection. Nested-PCR was performed using MY09/MY11 and GP5+/GP6+ primers with genotyping by direct sequencing. Type-specific PCR for HPV-6, -11, -16, -18, -31 and -33 was also used to assess multiple infections. Out of 321 women examined, 189 (58.8%) had normal cytology, 16 (5.0%) had ASCUS and 116 (36.1%) had cytological abnormalities. HPV-DNA was detected in 22 (11.6%), 6 (37.5%), and 104 (89.6%) normal cytology, ASCUS and cytological abnormalities respectively. HPV16 was the most prevalent genotype regardless of cytological status followed by HPV70 in women without lesions and HPV33 among those with lesions. HR-HPV prevalence varied significantly according to the cervical cytology (P = 0.000). Among women without lesions, two peaks of HPV infections were observed in age group less than 30 years (60.0%) and in age group 50-59 years (7.1%). Age, age of first sex, multiple sexual partners and pregnancies were the risk factors for HPV infection in women without lesions. Our findings could be used as evidence data base for future epidemiological monitoring in this region.
