Abstract
Bradykinin (BK), a well-studied mediator of physiological and pathological processes in the peripheral system, has garnered less attention regarding its function in the central nervous system, particularly in behavioural regulation. This review delves into the historical progression of research focused on the behavioural effects of BK and other drugs that act via similar mechanisms to provide new insights into the pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy of psychiatric disorders. Evidence from experiments with animal models indicates that BK modulates defensive reactions associated with panic symptoms and the response to acute stressors. The mechanisms are not entirely understood but point to complex interactions with other neurotransmitter systems, such as opioids, and intracellular signalling cascades. By addressing the existing research gaps in this field, we present new proposals for future research endeavours to foster a new era of investigation regarding BK's role in emotional regulation. Implications for psychiatry, chiefly for panic and depressive disorders are also discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the effects of different types of exercise on the plasma metabolomics of chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-induced depressed rats based on 1H-NMR metabolomics techniques, and to explore the potential mechanisms of exercise for the treatment of depression. Rats were randomly divided into blank control group (C), CUMS control group (D), pre-exercise with CUMS group (P), CUMS with aerobic exercise group, CUMS with resistance exercise group (R), and CUMS with aerobic + resistance exercise group (E). The corresponding protocol intervention was applied to each group of rats. Body weight, sucrose preference and open field tests were performed weekly during the experiment to evaluate the extent of depression in rats. Plasma samples from each group of rats were collected at the end of the experiment, and then the plasma was analyzed by 1H-NMR metabolomics combined with multivariate statistical analysis methods to identify differential metabolites and perform metabolic pathway analysis. (1) Compared with the group D, the body weight, sucrose preference rate, and the number of crossings and standings in the different types of exercise groups were significantly improved (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01). (2) Compared to group C, a total of 15 differential metabolites associated with depression were screened in the plasma of rats in group D, involving 6 metabolic pathways. Group P can regulate the levels of 6 metabolites: valine, lactate, inositol, glucose, phosphocreatine, acetoacetic acid. Group A can regulate the levels of 6 metabolites: N-acetylglycoprotein, leucine, lactate, low density lipoprotein, glucose and acetoacetic acid. Group R can regulate the levels of 6 metabolites: choline, lactate, inositol, glucose, phosphocreatine and acetoacetic acid. Group E can regulate the levels of 5 metabolites: choline, citric acid, glucose, acetone and acetoacetic acid. The different types of exercise groups can improve the depressive symptoms in CUMS rats, and there are common metabolites and metabolic pathways for their mechanism of effects. This study provides a powerful analytical tool to study the mechanism of the antidepressant effect of exercise, and provides an important method and basis for the early diagnosis, prevention and treatment of depression.

Abstract
Qualitative evidences have shown that having the habit of reading might be beneficial for mental health. The present study aims to examine the relationship between reading and depression. National cross-sectional survey data of adults aged >40 years in mainland China were used. The Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale questionnaire was utilized to detect depression status. Multilevel binary logistic and linear regression models were employed to reveal the association, and restricted cubic spline with 4 knots was adopted to describe the non-linear association of reading quantity and depression. The prevalence of depression was 13.02% in the target population. It was found that the habit of reading was negatively associated with depression, the odds ratio was 0.809 (95% confidence interval: 0.657-0.997). Diverse association between reading and depression was observed in different age groups, and a significant association was identified among the elderly, but not in the middle-aged population. Restricted cubic spline showed several books read per year might lower the risk of depression and 20-items Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale score. A lower prevalence of depression was observed in the target population. The habit of reading was negatively associated with depression. Age-specific association was observed. It is worth paying attention to the reading habit that could be beneficial in the elderly for mental health intervention, but it needs to be confirmed by experimental study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to identify factors associated with side effects of psychotropic drugs in a real-world setting enriched with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) patients. METHODS A total of 1410 depressed patients were treated in a naturalistic setting. Side effects were measured with the Udvalg for Kliniske Undersogelser Side Effect Rating Scale (UKU); the total score and UKU subscales were considered. Clinical-demographic variables were tested for association with side effects in univariate and then multivariate analyses. RESULTS Total, psychic and neurological side effects were associated with depressive symptom severity, while autonomic side effects were higher in those with somatic comorbidities and other side effects were lower in patients receiving trazodone. In multivariate analyses, depressive symptom severity was associated with psychic and total side effects, while generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) with neurological side effects and somatic comorbidities remained associated with autonomic side effects. Trazodone was associated with lower side effects and with augmentation treatments. Augmentation therapies showed opposite effects depending on response status, i.e. increased or decreased the risk of side effects in responders and non-responders/resistant patients, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Psychic side effects may be difficult to distinguish from depressive symptoms and factors associated with different types of side effects are heterogeneous and likely interacting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Comorbid anxiety is generally associated with poorer response to antidepressant treatment. This post hoc analysis explored the efficacy of esketamine plus an antidepressant in patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) with or without comorbid anxiety. METHODS TRANSFORM-2, a double-blind, flexible-dose, 4-week study (NCT02418585), randomized adults with TRD to placebo or esketamine nasal spray, each with a newly-initiated oral antidepressant. Comorbid anxiety was defined as clinically noteworthy anxiety symptoms (7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale [GAD-7] score ≥10) at screening and baseline or comorbid anxiety disorder diagnosis at screening. Treatment effect based on change in Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) total score, and response and remission were examined by presence/absence of comorbid anxiety using analysis of covariance and logistic regression models. RESULTS Approximately 72% (162/223) of patients had baseline comorbid anxiety. Esketamine-treated patients with and without anxiety demonstrated significant reductions in MADRS (mean [SD] change from baseline at day 28: -21.0 [12.51] and -22.7 [11.98], respectively). Higher rates of response and remission, and a significantly greater decrease in MADRS score at day 28 were observed compared to antidepressant/placebo, regardless of comorbid anxiety (with anxiety: difference in LS means [95% CI] -4.2 [-8.1, -0.3]; without anxiety: -7.5 [-13.7, -1.3]). There was no significant interaction of treatment and comorbid anxiety (p = .371). Notably, in the antidepressant/placebo group improvement was similar in those with and without comorbid anxiety. CONCLUSION Post hoc data support efficacy of esketamine plus an oral antidepressant in patients with TRD, regardless of comorbid anxiety.

Antidepressant side effects and their impact on treatment outcome in people with major depressive disorder: an iSPOT-D report. Transl Psychiatry 2021; 11:417. Abstract
Side effects to antidepressant medications are common and can impact the prognosis of successful treatment outcome in people with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, few studies have investigated the severity of side effects over the course of treatment and their association with treatment outcome. Here we assessed the severity of side effects and the impact of treatment type and anxiety symptoms over the course of treatment, as well as whether side effects were associated with treatment outcome. Participants were N = 1008 adults with a current diagnosis of single-episode or recurrent, nonpsychotic MDD. Participants were randomised to receive escitalopram, sertraline, or venlafaxine-extended release with equal probability and reassessed at 8 weeks regarding Hamilton Rating Scale Depression (HRSD17) and Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (QIDS-SR16) remission and response. Severity of side effects were assessed using the Frequency, Intensity, and Burden of Side Effects Rating (FIBSER) scale and assessed at day 4 and weeks 2, 4, 6, and 8. Frequency, intensity, and burden of side effects were greatest at week 2, then only frequency and intensity of side effects gradually decreased up to week 6. Treatment type and anxiety symptoms did not impact the severity of side effects. A greater burden-but not frequency or intensity-of side effects was associated with poorer treatment outcome and as early as 4 days post-treatment. Together, this work provides an informative mapping of the progression of side effects throughout the treatment course and their association with treatment outcome. Importantly, the burden of side effects that are present as early as 4 days post-treatment predicts poorer treatment outcome and should be monitored closely. iSPOT-D: Registry name: ClinicalTrials.gov. Abstract
Alumina nanoparticles (AlNPs) exposure causes hippocampal-dependent cognitive dysfunction. However, whether chronic stress exacerbates AlNPs-induced hippocampal lesion and its mechanism remains unclear. This study was aimed to investigate the combined effects and mechanisms of AlNPs and chronic stress on the hippocampal lesion. The behavioral tests demonstrated that combined exposure to AlNPs and chronic restraint stress (CRS) worsened both cognition and depression-like behavior than exposed to AlNPs and CRS alone. Microstructural and ultrastructural observations showed that combined exposure to AlNPs and CRS exacerbated hippocampal damage. Both AlNPs and CRS induced hippocampal neuronal ferroptosis, presenting as iron and glutamate metabolism disorder, GPX4 fluorescence of neurons decrease, LPO and ROS levels increase, and FJB-positive neurons increase. Meanwhile, combined exposure to AlNPs and CRS exacerbated hippocampal neuronal ferroptosis. Mechanism investigation revealed that combined exposure to AlNPs and CRS activated IFN-γ/ASK1/JNK signaling pathway. Furthermore, IFN-γ neutralizing antibody R4-6A2 effectively inhibited the activation of IFN-γ/ASK1/JNK signaling pathway, alleviated hippocampal neuronal ferroptosis and improved cognition ability. ASK1 inhibitor GS-4997 also improved hippocampal neuronal ferroptosis and cognitive dysfunction by inhibiting ASK1/JNK signaling pathway. Together, these results demonstrate that combined exposure to AlNPs and CRS exacerbates hippocampal neuronal ferroptosis via activating IFN-γ/ASK1/JNK signaling pathway.

Abstract
Neuroinflammation represents a common trait in the pathology and progression of the major psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. Neuropsychiatric disorders have emerged as a global crisis, affecting 1 in 4 people, while neurological disorders are the second leading cause of death in the elderly population worldwide (WHO, 2001; GBD 2016 Neurology Collaborators, 2019). However, there remains an immense deficit in availability of effective drug treatments for most neurological disorders. In fact, for disorders such as depression, placebos and behavioral therapies have equal effectiveness as antidepressants. For neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, drugs that can prevent, slow, or cure the disease have yet to be found. Several non-traditional avenues of drug target identification have emerged with ongoing neurological disease research to meet the need for novel and efficacious treatments. Of these novel avenues is that of neuroinflammation, which has been found to be involved in the progression and pathology of many of the leading neurological disorders. Neuroinflammation is characterized by glial inflammatory factors in certain stages of neurological disorders. Although the meta-analyses have provided evidence of genetic/proteomic upregulation of inflammatory factors in certain stages of neurological disorders. Although the mechanisms underpinning the connections between neuroinflammation and neurological disorders are unclear, and meta-analysis results have shown high sensitivity to factors such as disorder severity and sample type, there is significant evidence of neuroinflammation associations across neurological disorders. In this review, we summarize the role of neuroinflammation in psychiatric disorders such as major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and bipolar disorder, as well as in neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, and introduce current research on the potential of immunomodulatory imide drugs (IMiDs) as a new treatment strategy for these disorders.

Abstract
The natural carotenoid lycopene (LYC) has strong antioxidant and neuroprotective capacities. This study investigated the effects and mechanisms of LYC on chronic stress-induced hippocampal lesions and learning and memory dysfunction. Rats were administered LYC and/or chronic restraint stress (CRS) for 21 days. Morris water maze results demonstrated that LYC prevented CRS-induced learning and memory dysfunction. Histopathological staining and transmission electron microscopy observation revealed that LYC ameliorated CRS-induced hippocampal microstructural and ultrastructural damage. Furthermore, LYC alleviated CRS-induced oxidative stress by reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and enhancing antioxidant enzyme activities. LYC also improved CRS-induced hippocampal mitochondrial dysfunction by recovering mitochondrial membrane potential, and complex I (NADH dehydrogenase) and II (succinate dehydrogenase) activities. Moreover, LYC reduced CRS-induced apoptosis via the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway, and decreased the number of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end-labeled positive cells. Additionally, western blot analysis demonstrated that LYC inhibited CRS-induced activation of the c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathway. Correlation analysis indicated that ROS levels, JNK activation, and the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway were positively correlated. Further investigation of the underlying mechanisms revealed that the ROS scavenger N-acetyl-l-cysteine inhibited CRS-induced JNK activation. Furthermore, the JNK inhibitor SP600125 relieved CRS-induced hippocampal mitochondrial dysfunction, apoptosis via the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway, and learning and memory dysfunction. Together, these results suggest that LYC alleviates hippocampal oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and apoptosis by inhibiting the ROS/JNK signaling pathway, thereby improving CRS-induced hippocampal injury and learning and memory dysfunction. This study provides a theoretical basis and new therapeutic strategies for the application of LYC to relieve chronic stress encephalopathy.

Abstract
Panic disorder (PD) is a debilitating condition that drives medical spending at least twice as high as medically matched controls. Excessive utilization of healthcare resources comes from emergency department (ED), medications, diagnostic testing, and physician visits. Freespira is an FDA-cleared digital therapeutic that treats PD and panic attacks (PA) by correcting underlying abnormal respiratory physiology. Efficacy of Freespira has been established in prior studies. This paper reports on a quality improvement program that investigated whether treating PD patients with Freespira would reduce medical costs and improve outcomes over 12-months. Panic symptoms were assessed using the Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS). Pre-and post-treatment insurance claims determined costs. At baseline, mean Clinician Global Impression (CGI-S) was 4.4 (moderately/markedly ill), mean PDSS was 14.4 and mean PA frequency/week was 2 (range 0-5). Immediately post-treatment (week 5) mean CGI-S, PDSS and weekly PA frequency declined to 2.8 (borderline/mildly ill, 4.9 (remission) and 0.2 (range 0-2) respectively, p < 0.001. 82% reported PDSS decrease of ≥ 40% (clinically significant), 86% were PA-free. One-year post treatment mean CGI-S, PDSS and PA remained low at 2.1, 4.4, and 0.3 (range 0-1) respectively. 91% had PDSS decrease of ≥ 40%, 73% were PA-free. The majority of patients were panic attack free and/or reduced their symptoms and avoidance behaviors 1-year post Freespira treatment. Mean overall medical costs were reduced by 35% from $548 to $358 PMPM (per member per month) or an annual reduction of $2280. at 12 months post-treatment. There was a 65% reduction in ED costs from $87 to $30 PMPM. Median pharmacy costs were reduced by 68% from $73 to $23 PMPM.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a serious public health problem that has, at best, modest treatment response—potentially due to its heterogeneous clinical presentation. One way to parse the heterogeneity is to investigate the role of particular features of MDD, an endeavor that can also help identify novel and focal targets for treatment and prevention efforts. Our R01 focuses on the feature of psychomotor disturbance (e.g., psychomotor agitation (PmA) and retardation (PmR)), a particularly pernicious feature of MDD, that has not been examined extensively in MDD. Aim 1 is comparing three groups of individuals—those with current MDD (n = 100), remitted MDD (n = 100), and controls (n = 50)—on multiple measures of PmR and PmA (assessed both in the lab and in the subjects’ natural environment). Aim 2 is examining the structural (diffusion MRI) and functional (resting state fMRI) connectivity of motor circuitry of the three groups as well as the relation between motor circuitry and the proposed indicators of PmR and PmA. Aim 3 is following up with subjects three times over 18 months to evaluate whether motor symptoms change in tandem with overall depressive symptoms and functioning over time and/or whether baseline PmR/PmA predicts course of depression and functioning. Aim 3 is particularly clinically significant. Finding that motor functioning and overall depression severity co-vary over time, or that motor variables predict subsequent change in overall depression severity, would support the potential clinical utility of these novel, reliable, and easily administered motor assessments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE No study has investigated the association between number of anxiety disorders (NADs) and long-term outcome over 10 years among patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). This study investigated this issue. METHODS At baseline, 290 outpatients with MDD were enrolled, 149 with at least one anxiety disorder (AD). Subjects were followed-up at six-month, two-year, and 10-year points. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV-TR was used to confirm psychiatric diagnoses. NADs at baseline was recorded. The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD), the anxiety subscale of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS-A), and the somatic subscale (SS) of the Depression and Somatic Symptoms Scale were employed. Generalized Estimating Equation models were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS MDD patients with ADs had greater depression, anxiety, and somatic severities at the three follow-up points than those without. NADs was significantly and positively correlated with the three dimensions and total duration of pharmacotherapy at follow-up. NADs was independently associated with symptom severity after controlling for depression and anxiety at baseline and pharmacotherapy. When the DSM-5 criteria for ADs were applied, the results were unchanged. Specific phobia, panic disorder and social phobia, and panic disorder and specific phobia were independently associated with depression, anxiety, and somatic symptoms, respectively. LIMITATION Pharmacotherapy at follow-up was not controlled. The three follow-up intervals were unequal. CONCLUSIONS Comorbidity with more ADs was associated with a poorer prognosis. The negative impacts of ADs on MDD persisted at the ten-year follow-up point. NADs was associated with the long-term prognosis of MDD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES It has been suggested that agitated depression (AD) is a common, severe feature in bipolar disorder. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of AD and investigate whether presence of AD was associated with episodic and lifetime clinical features in a large well-characterized bipolar disorder sample. METHOD The prevalence of agitation, based on semi-structured interview and medical case-notes, in the most severe depressive episode was estimated in 2925 individuals with DSM-IV bipolar disorder recruited into the UK Bipolar Disorder Research Network. Predictors of agitation were ascertained using symptoms within the same episode and lifetime clinical features using multivariate models. RESULTS 32.3% (n = 946) experienced agitation during the worst depressive episode. Within the same episode, significant predictors of presence of agitation were: insomnia (OR 2.119, P < 0.001), poor concentration (OR 1.966, P = 0.027), decreased libido (OR 1.960, P < 0.001), suicidal ideation (OR 1.861, P < 0.001), slowed activity (OR 1.504, P = 0.001), and poor appetite (OR 1.297, P = 0.029). Over the lifetime illness course, co-morbid panic disorder (OR 2.000, P < 0.001), suicide attempt (OR 1.399, P = 0.007), and dysphoric mania (OR 1.354, P = 0.017) were significantly associated with AD. CONCLUSIONS Agitation accompanied bipolar depression in at least one-third of cases in our sample and was associated with concurrent somatic depressive symptoms, which are also common features of mixed manic states. Furthermore, AD in our sample was associated with lifetime experience of mixed mania, in addition to severe lifetime illness course including comorbid panic disorder and suicidal behavior. Our results have implications for the diagnosis and treatment of agitated features in bipolar depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pre-treatment factors that increase smokers' risk of experiencing neuropsychiatric adverse events (NPSAEs) when quitting smoking are unknown. OBJECTIVE To identify baseline smoker characteristics beyond the history of mental illness that predict which participants were more likely to experience moderate to severe NPSAEs in EAGLES. DESIGN A prospective correlational cohort study in the context of a multinational, multicenter, double-blind, randomized trial. PARTICIPANTS Smokers without (N = 3984; NPC)/with (N = 4050; PC) histories of, or current clinically stable, psychiatric disorders including mood (N = 2882; 71%), anxiety (N = 782; 19%), and psychotic (N = 386; 10%) disorders. INTERVENTIONS Bupropion, 150 mg twice daily, or varenicline, 1 mg twice daily, versus active control (nicotine patch, 21 mg/day with taper) and placebo for 12 weeks with 12-week non-treatment follow-up. MAIN MEASURES Primary safety outcome was the incidence of a composite measure of moderate/severe NPSAEs. Associations among baseline demographic/clinical characteristics and the primary safety endpoint were analyzed post hoc via generalized linear regression. KEY RESULTS The incidence of moderate to severe NPSAEs was higher among smokers in the PC (238/4050; 5.9%) than in the NPC (84/3984; 2.1%). Three baseline characteristics predicted increased risk for experiencing clinically significant NPSAEs when quitting regardless of carrying a psychiatric diagnosis: current symptoms of anxiety (for every ~ 4-unit increase in HADS anxiety score, the absolute risk of occurrence of the NPSAE endpoint increased by 1% in both PC and NPC); prior history of suicidal ideation and/or behavior (PC, 4.4% increase; P = 0.001; NPC, 4.1% increase; P = 0.02), and being of White race (versus Black: PC, 2.9% ± 0.9 [SE] increase; P = 0.002; and NPC, 3.4% ± 0.8 [SE] increase; P = 0.001). Among smokers with psychiatric disorders, younger age, female sex, history of substance use disorders, and proxy measures of nicotine dependence or psychiatric illness severity also predicted greater risk. There were no significant interactions between these characteristics and treatment. Smokers with unstable psychiatric disorders or with current, active substance abuse were excluded from the study. CONCLUSIONS Irrespective of cessation pharmacotherapy use, smokers attempting to quit were more likely to experience moderate to severe NPSAEs if they reported current anxiety or prior suicidal ideation at baseline and were White. In smokers with a psychiatric history, female sex, younger age, and greater severity of nicotine dependence were also predictive. TRIAL REGISTRATION ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT01456936.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The effectiveness of transcranial photobiomodulation (TPBM) in treating anxiety and depression disorders is a demonstrated and identified issue. However, the optimum therapeutic dose and the underlying mechanism of action are not fully understood. In this study, the therapeutic effects of three different near-infrared (NIR) doses on anxiety- and depression-like behaviors as well as cerebral levels of serotonin (5-HT) and nitric oxide (NO) were evaluated in a mouse model of chronic restraint stress (CRS). MATERIALS AND METHODS CRS procedure (3 hours/day, over 3 weeks) was performed as a typical stress model to study anxiety and depression along with laser treatment (3 times/week, over 3 weeks), which began simultaneously with CRS. A NIR diode laser (810 nm wavelength, 10 Hz) with the output power of 200 mW and power density of 4.75 W/cm2 was implemented to deliver three different doses of 4, 8, and 16 J/cm2 to the cerebral cortex of mice. Behavioral experiments including open field, tail suspension, and elevated plus maze tests as well as serum cortisol levels were assessed to evaluate the anti-anxiety and anti-depressive effects of NIR TPBM. The changes of 5-HT and NO levels in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hippocampus (Hipp) were assessed. RESULTS CRS procedure induced anxiety- and depression-like behaviors, increased serum cortisol levels, decreased 5-HT and increased NO levels in the PFC and Hipp areas. NIR TPBM improved behavioral results, decreased serum cortisol levels, increased 5-HT and decreased NO concentrations in the PFC and Hipp. A dose of 8 J/cm2 of NIR TPBM showed the maximum effects on behavioral and molecular results, while a decline was observed from the optimum effects at both lower (4 J/cm2 ) and higher (16 J/cm2 ) doses. CONCLUSION Our results demonstrated that NIR TPBM had an anti-anxiety and anti-depressive effect in CRS mice, which is probably linked to increasing 5-HT and decreasing NO levels in the PFC and Hipp areas. Abstract
OBJECTIVES We aim to examine whether nonpharmacological interventions could effectively improve depressive symptoms and depression to provide more treatment options for nursing students. METHODS PubMed, the Cochrane Library, EMBase, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and three Chinese electronic databases were comprehensively searched for papers that were published from January 1990 through March 2018. Quality assessment, sensitivity analysis and heterogeneity were performed. RESULTS In our review, 13 controlled trials met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis indicated that the depressive symptoms and depression of nursing students in the intervention groups showed significantly moderate improvements compared with the control groups. Three subgroup analyses showed that mindfulness interventions and stress management programs were common and effective, short-term interventions were beneficial to depression, nonpharmacological interventions had great improvements for Asian nursing students and more rigorous researches on methodological quality are recommended. CONCLUSION Nonpharmacological interventions can serve as promising complementary and alternative approaches in reducing the depressive symptoms and depression of nursing students.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Major depressive disorder with a comorbid anxiety disorder or with significant anxiety symptoms (here called anxious depression) is common and has been associated with poor clinical course trajectories. However, various dichotomous as well as dimensional definitions have been used to label anxious depression and it remains unclear to which extent these result in inconsistent findings. This review provides an overview of recent literature on the impact of anxiety in depressed patients on clinical course trajectories, treatment outcomes, and underlying neurobiological dysregulations. RECENT FINDINGS Anxious depression seems associated with poorer clinical course trajectories and treatment nonresponse as compared with 'pure' depression, regardless of which definition is used. Recent studies have attempted to determine specific efficacy of novel pharmacological treatments for anxious depressed patients, but have not been conclusive because of the insufficient number of studies and differences in definitions and assessment of anxious depression. Neurobiology studies suggest that anxious depression is associated with increased immune dysregulation, more cortical thinning, and corticolimbic dysfunctions as compared with 'pure' depression. SUMMARY Anxious depression appears to be a common and clinically relevant subtype of depression as it predicts poorer course trajectories. As populations with anxious depression may benefit from specific treatment regimens, further research is necessary to better delineate its definition and neurobiology. The relatively new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5 anxious distress specifier is a welcome development and should be further investigated and compared against other anxiety constructs.
