Abstract
This study investigates the relationship between erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and ABO blood grouping in the context of periodontal disorders. Periodontal diseases, chronic inflammatory conditions that damage the tissues supporting teeth, can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. ESR, a common hematological test indicating systemic inflammation, has been linked to the severity of periodontal disease. ABO blood grouping, a hereditary trait, is linked to a higher risk of various oral and systemic diseases. By synthesizing existing research, this study explores the potential of the connection between blood type ABO and ESR levels in individuals with periodontal disorders, examining studies that assess the distribution of ABO blood types and corresponding ESR values among periodontal patients.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a common oral condition that can have a significant impact on the overall health of the body. In recent years, attention has been paid to potential relationships between periodontitis and various hematological disorders. This publication aims to present information available in the literature on this relationship, focusing on examples of red blood cell disorders (such as aplastic anemia and sickle cell anemia) and white blood cell disorders (such as cyclic neutropenia, maladaptive trained immunity, clonal hematopoiesis, leukemia, and multiple myeloma). Understanding these associations can help physicians and dentists better diagnose, monitor, and treat patients associated with both groups of conditions, highlighting the need for interdisciplinary care for patients with oral disorders and hematologic diseases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the differences and similarities of parameters associated with anemia of inflammation between patients with stage Ⅲ periodontitis and periodontally healthy volunteers, and to explore the influence of periodontal initial therapy on those indicators. METHODS Patients with stage Ⅲ periodontitis and periodontally healthy volunteers seeking periodontal treatment or prophylaxis at Department of Periodontology, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology from February 2020 to February 2023 were enrolled. Their demographic characteristics, periodontal parameters (including probing depth, clinical attachment loss, bleeding index), and fasting blood were gathered before periodontal initial therapy. Three months after periodontal initial therapy, the periodontal parameters of the patients with stage Ⅲ periodontitis were re-evaluated and their fasting blood was collected again. Blood routine examinations (including white blood cells, red blood cells, hemoglobin, packed cell volume, mean corpuscular volume of erythrocytes, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration) were performed. And ferritin, hepcidin, erythropoietin (EPO) were detected with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). All data analysis was done with SPSS 21.0, independent sample t test, paired t test, and analysis of covariance were used for comparison between the groups. RESULTS A total of 25 patients with stage Ⅲ periodontitis and 25 periodontally healthy volunteers were included in this study. The patients with stage Ⅲ periodontitis were significantly older than those in periodontally healthy status [(36.72±7.64) years vs. (31.44±7.52) years, P=0.017]. The patients with stage Ⅲ periodontitis showed lower serum hemoglobin [(134.92±12.71) g/L vs. (146.52±12.51) g/L, P=0.002] and higher serum ferritin [(225.08±103.36) μg/L vs. (155.19±115.38) μg/L, P=0.029], EPO [(41.28±12.58) IU/L vs. (28.38±10.52) IU/L, P < 0.001], and hepcidin [(48.03±34.44) μg/L vs. (27.42±15.00) μg/L, P=0.009] compared with periodontally healthy volunteers. After adjusting the age with the covariance analysis, these parameters (hemoglobin, ferritin, EPO, and hepcidin) showed the same trends as independent-sample t test with statistical significance. Three months after periodontal initial therapy, all the periodontal parameters showed statistically significant improvement. The serum hemoglobin raised [(146.05±15.48) g/L vs. (133.77± 13.15) g/L, P < 0.001], while the serum ferritin [(128.52±90.95) μg/L vs. (221.22±102.15) μg/L, P < 0.001], EPO [(27.66±19.67) IU/L vs. (39.63± 12.48) IU/L, P=0.004], and hepcidin [(32.54±18.67) μg/L vs. (48.18±36.74) μg/L, P=0.033] decreased compared with baseline. CONCLUSION Tendency of iron metabolism disorder and anemia of inflammation was observed in patients with stage Ⅲ periodontitis, which can be attenuated by periodontal initial therapy.

Abstract
Context The link between oral infections and systemic disease is a well-proven hypothesis in the current literature. This relationship is the result of interaction between periodontal microbe that triggers inflammatory processes leading to the secretion of cytokines and other mediators of inflammation resulting in the systemic effects of pathogenesis. Materials and Methods In this study, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), probing pocket depth, plaque index, gingival index, and the parameters were assessed initially and 1 month after scaling and root planing (SRP). Statistical Analysis Used The paired t-test and the Pearson correlation were needed to examine and compare measured data. Results The data from the study reveal that all the clinical parameters like the plaque index, the gingival index, and the probing pocket depth were statistically significantly reduced after 1 month of SRP with respect to baseline. While ESR mean value was also reduced, that is, 3.27 ± 1.24 mm/hr which was also considered statistically significant. Conclusions The findings from the study showed a positive correlation between periodontal inflammation and ESR.

Abstract
Aims and Objectives Periodontitis is a chronic disease affecting the supporting tissues of the teeth and exhibits bidirectional relation with systemic diseases. This study aims to determine the association between chronic periodontitis and erythrocyte functional measures: total red blood cells (RBCs), hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) by systematic review and meta-analysis. Materials and Methods A systematic search of the electronic databases PUBMED, OVID, Embase, Web on Science, and Google Scholar was undertaken from inception to July 2022. English language studies that evaluated the erythrocyte functional measures in periodontitis and health were selected. Other review reports, letters/opinion articles, studies without a definition of periodontitis, and the concomitant presence of systemic conditions (diabetes, kidney disease, cancer) were excluded. Two reviewers determined full-text eligibility in a blinded process. Meta-Essentials software was used to generate forest plots and to determine heterogeneity and publication bias. Results Twenty-six studies involving 1082 patients with chronic periodontitis and 980 healthy controls were analyzed. Pooled results showed lower Hb concentration (Hedges' g = -1.16; 95% confidence intervals [CI], -1.7 to -0.62), RBC counts (Hedges' g = -0.85; 95% CI, -1.31 to -0.38) and packed cell volume (-0.56; 95% CI, -1.02 to -0.11) in patients with chronic periodontitis. Conclusion This meta-analysis showed a decreasing trend in the hematological parameters, including hemoglobin concentration, number of erythrocytes, and hematocrit in patients with chronic periodontitis compared to healthy controls.

Abstract
Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) is a Gram-negative bacterial pathogen associated with periodontitis and nonoral diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimer´s disease. Aa isolates with the serotypes a, b, and c are globally most prevalent. Importantly, isolates displaying these serotypes have different clinical presentations. While serotype b isolates are predominant in severe periodontitis, serotypes a and c are generally encountered in mild periodontitis or healthy individuals. It is currently unknown how these differences are reflected in the overall secretion of virulence factors. Therefore, this study was aimed at a comparative analysis of exoproteomes from different clinical Aa isolates with serotypes a, b, or c by mass spectrometry, and a subsequent correlation of the recorded exoproteome profiles with virulence. Overall, we identified 425 extracellular proteins. Significant differences in the exoproteome composition of isolates with different serotypes were observed in terms of protein identification and abundance. In particular, serotype a isolates presented more extracellular proteins than serotype b or c isolates. These differences are mirrored in their virulence in infection models based on human salivary gland epithelial cells and neutrophils. Remarkably, serotype a isolates displayed stronger adhesive capabilities and induced more lysis of epithelial cells and neutrophils than serotype b or c isolates. Conversely, serotype c isolates showed relatively low leukotoxicity, while provoking NETosis to similar extents as serotype a and b isolates. Altogether, we conclude that the differential virulence presentation by Aa isolates with the dominant serotypes a, b, or c can be explained by their exoproteome heterogeneity. IMPORTANCE Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease that causes progressive destruction of alveolar bone and supporting tissues around the teeth, ultimately resulting in tooth loss. The bacterium Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) is a prevalent causative agent of periodontitis, but this oral pathogen is also associated with serious extraoral diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimer's disease. Clinical Aa isolates are usually distinguished by serotyping, because of known serotype-specific differences in virulence. Aa with serotype b is associated with aggressive forms of periodontitis, while isolates with serotypes a or c are usually encountered in cases of mild periodontitis or healthy individuals. The molecular basis for these differences in virulence was so far unknown. In the present study, we pinpoint serotype-specific differences in virulence factor production by clinical Aa isolates. We consider these findings important, because they provide new leads for future preventive or therapeutic approaches to fight periodontitis and associated morbidities.

Abstract
Some of the most common oral disorders are periodontal disease. Variation in hematological parameters in chronic periodontitis patients could affect the type of treatment and its overall outcomes. Comparing and evaluating the hematological parameters in people with chronic periodontitis and the general population was the aim of this study. 100 individuals with chronic periodontitis (Group I) and 100 individuals in clinically good health participated in the study (Group II). Hemoglobin (Hb), random blood sugar (RBS), bleeding time (BT), and clotting time (CT) were evaluated and compared between the two groups. In contrast to patients with chronic periodontitis (8.934 ± 2.0), in healthy patients, the mean Hb concentrations were found to be higher (13.435 ± 1.8). In comparison to healthy individuals (98.98 ± 25.42), patients with chronic periodontitis had a higher mean value for RBS (112.14 ± 47.5). In contrast to the healthy population (BT = 2.654 ± 13.36, CT = 6.057 ± 0.267), patients with chronic periodontitis had shorter mean BT and CT (BT = 0.301 ± 0.07, CT = 2.84 ± 0.6058). Hematological factors and the population's periodontal health were discovered to be significantly associated (P = 0.001). Within the constraints of the continuing investigation, it was shown that among people with chronic periodontitis, Hb levels, BT, and CT were reduced, while blood glucose levels were increased.

Abstract
Background Prior studies have shown an association between generalized periodontitis and anemia in older or undernourished adults. The aim of the study was to examine the associations of erythrocyte indices with localized periodontitis in robust young adults, which has never been reported before. Methods The study included 1286 military participants, aged 19–40 years, with regular exercise training in Hualien, Taiwan. Localized periodontitis was grouped to healthy/stage I and stage II/III (n = 803 and 325) in men and (n = 130 and 28) in women according to the 2017 criteria of the world workshop. Systemic inflammation was evaluated by leukocyte counts. Multiple logistic regression analysis with adjustment for age, tobacco smoking status, betel nut chewing status, body mass index and leucocyte counts were used to determine the associations. Results Greater mean corpuscular volume in young men [odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals 1.03 (1.01–1.06)], and greater hematocrit and hemoglobin levels in young women were associated with a higher risk of localized stage II/III periodontitis [OR: 1.17 (1.02–1.34) and 1.60 (1.06–2.41), respectively]. However, there were no associations for erythrocyte counts. Conclusions The localized stage II/III periodontitis risk increased with greater erythrocyte indices in robust young adults. This finding could be explained in part by that localized periodontitis may promote physical stress, possibly resulting in an increase of erythrocyte indices. On the other side, greater physical fitness associated with a lower risk of periodontitis may consume iron storage in the body, leading to exercise-induced anemia or smaller erythrocyte volume. Abstract
BACKGROUND Ferritin is an acute-phase protein that is increased in inflammatory diseases. Melatonin has been studied due to its antioxidant effects and the elimination of free radicals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of melatonin supplement as an adjunct to routine periodontal treatment on serum ferritin levels in patients with periodontitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty patients with chronic periodontitis were included in this randomized controlled clinical trial study. Twenty patients received nonsurgical periodontal treatment and twenty patients received nonsurgical periodontal treatment with adjunctive use of melatonin. Serum ferritin concentrations and periodontal parameters were recorded at baseline and 3 months after periodontal therapy. Serum ferritin level and periodontal parameters comparison at baseline and 3 months after periodontal treatment was done by Wilcoxon signed-rank test and paired sample t-test, respectively. Differences between test and control groups were evaluated by Mann-Whitney U-test for ferritin level and independent t-test for periodontal parameters, and a P ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS Serum ferritin level decreased in both the control and test group in 3 months follow-up compared to baseline (P < 0.001). The reduction in ferritin levels in the test group was more than the control group, but this difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.414). Improvement in periodontal parameters were not significant between two groups (P = 0.489), but improvement rates in the test group were more than control. CONCLUSION Melatonin, as an adjunct to periodontal therapy, showed additional benefits in the reduction of serum ferritin levels and improvement of periodontal parameters.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate whether anemia of inflammation (AI) occurs in periodontitis patients and to further explore underlying pathogenesis of periodontitis-related AI by an experimental periodontitis model. BACKGROUND Previous studies have reported periodontitis patients could show a tendency toward AI. However, the relationship between periodontitis and AI remains unclear, and the related pathological mechanisms have not been identified. MATERIALS AND METHODS Periodontal clinical parameters, inflammatory markers, and anemia-related indicators were compared between 98 aggressive periodontitis (AgP) patients and 103 healthy subjects. An experimental periodontitis model was induced by ligature placement in mice. The changes in mice inflammatory markers, anemia indicators, hepcidin mRNA expression, and serum hepcidin concentrations were measured. Human and mouse liver cells were treated with interleukin-6 (IL-6) for analyzing the changes in hepcidin expression based on mRNA and protein levels. RESULTS AgP patients exhibited higher white blood cell counts, IL-6, and C-reactive protein. Adjusted linear regression analyses showed correlations between AgP and decreased hemoglobin (HGB) and hematocrit (HCT). The ligature-induced periodontitis caused systemic inflammation and elevated IL-6 levels. Lower red blood cell counts, HGB, and HCT were detected, whereas the levels of hepcidin mRNA expression and serum hepcidin concentrations increased. The treatment of hepatocytes with IL-6 induced both hepcidin mRNA expression and hepcidin secretion. CONCLUSIONS Systemic inflammation induced by periodontitis leads to an increased risk for AI. IL-6-induced hepcidin could play a central mediator role and act as a key pathologic mechanism. Our results demonstrate periodontitis may be considered as an additional inflammatory disease contributing to the development of AI.

Abstract
Foot electrical stimulation (FES) has been considered as a classic stressor that can disturb homeostasis. Acute anemia was observed in the model induced by FES. The aim of this study was to explore the role of inflammatory cytokines underlying the acute anemia and gastrointestinal (GI) mucosal injury in the FES. Twenty-four male Kunming mice (20 ± 2 g) were randomly divided into control group and experimental group. The mice were placed in a footshock chamber that can generate 0.5 mA electrical impulse periodically for 0.5 h. After the process, red blood cell count, hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit, the levels of corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) in serum and hypothalamus, and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in serum and pituitary were detected separately. In addition, we investigated the expressions of inflammatory cytokines (IL-1, IL-6, TNF-α, iNOS, and IL-10) in the hypothalamus and duodenum by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Results showed that this FES model induced anemia, increased CRH and ACTH activity in the serum after the FES. Moreover, the expressions of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and iNOS were significantly increased following the process, while IL-10 was not activated. These findings suggest that anemia, the inflammatory cytokines in the hypothalamus and duodenum of the mice in the model induced by FES is closely related to GI mucosal injury/bleeding. Taken together, these results underscore the importance of anemia, GI mucosal injury/bleeding and stress, future studies would be needed to translate these findings into the benefit of affected patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess complete blood count (CBC) dynamics following ligature removal and open flap debridement in experimental peri-implantitis in dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seven male beagle dogs were included in the study. Four rough-surface implants were placed pair-wise in both sides of the mandible 14 weeks after tooth extraction. Second stage surgery was performed after 14 weeks. Experimental peri-implantitis was initiated 3 weeks later by ligature placement around the healing caps thus facilitating plaque accumulation and inducing inflammation and destruction of peri-implant tissues. Ligature removal and open flap debridement were performed 11 weeks later. The CBC values were compared with baseline after each procedure. Wilcoxon paired tests were conducted in order to identify statistically significant differences between baseline data and values obtained after each procedure. RESULTS Following experimental peri-implantitis, statistically significant (p < 0.05) increases were noted for white blood cells-WBC (9.62 ± 4.34 vs. 6.48 ± 1.34 cells per microliter of blood × 1000), hemoglobin-Hb (15.25 ± 0.94 vs. 13.52 ± 1.46, grams per deciliter), red blood cells-RBC (7.26 ± 0.79 vs. 5.9 ± 0.61 cells per microliter of blood × 1000), mean corpuscular hemoglobin-MCH (23.64 ± 0.96 vs. 23.16 ± 0.83 picograms/cell), platelets-PLT (349.86 ± 51.05 vs. 277.57 ± 66 cells per microliter of blood × 1000), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration-MCHC (35.83 ± 0.27 vs. 31.04 ± 0.48 grams per deciliter). A statistically significant (p < 0.05) decrease in values was noted only for after ligature removal and open flap debridement. Mean corpuscular volume-MCV values were significantly lower (65.99 ± 2.31 vs. 74.65 ± 2.85 femtoliter) following 1st ligature. Values returned to baseline after open flap debridement. CONCLUSIONS Within its limits, the present data suggest that experimentally induced peri-implantitis affects CBC values. Following surgical treatment, CBC values returned to normal. Clinical relevance This is the first study suggesting possible relationships between peri-implantitis and CBC values. Future studies, confirming such correlation, may provide an insight into the importance of peri-implant maintenance and treatment to minimize supporting tissues disease and reduce systemic effects.

Abstract
Background: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease with a possible infectious component. Anemia of inflammation (AI) occurring in various chronic diseases alters the hemoglobin (Hb) concentration and iron status. Currently, the association between periodontitis and AI is still controversial. The aim of this study was to assess the alterations of the level of hematological parameters and iron metabolism markers in patients with or without periodontitis. Methods: Electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane) were searched to identify publications about anemia and periodontitis. Subgroup analyses regarding gender, extent of periodontitis, and sample size were performed using STATA 12.1. Results: Sixteen studies were included in this meta-analysis. Pooled results showed a decrease in Hb [standardized mean difference (SMD) = −0.76, 95% CI = (−1.15, −0.37)], red blood cell [SMD = −0.69, 95% CI = (−1.09, −0.29)], hematocrit [SMD = −1.13, 95% CI = (−1.69, −0.57)], mean corpuscular volume [SMD = −0.16, 95% CI = (−0.32, −0.01)], and mean corpuscular Hb [SMD = −0.16, 95% CI = (−0.28, −0.04)], but upregulation in erythrocyte sedimentation rate [SMD = 0.63, 95% CI = (0.06, 1.19)]. In addition, patients with periodontitis had a higher level of hepcidin [SMD = 0.59, CI = (0.05, 1.12)] and decreased level of transferrin [SMD = −4.6, CI = (−13.1, −3.90)], with high heterogeneity. Conclusion: This meta-analysis indicates that periodontitis decreases Hb concentration and disturbs the balance of iron metabolism, which confirms strength of association between periodontitis and the development tendency of AI, especially for severe periodontitis. More unbiased cohort studies with larger sample sizes are still warranted to make a definitive judgment in the future.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a complex chronic inflammatory noncommunicable disease, initiated by the development of a dysbiotic microbial plaque biofilm below the gingival margin. Whilst the pathogenic biofilm is a "necessary cause" of periodontitis, it is insufficient on its own to cause the disease, and a destructive immune-inflammatory response is a key to the translation of risk to destructive events. Other exposures or "component causes" include individual genetic predisposition, lifestyle (including smoking and nutrition), and environmental factors. Dietary nutrients are essential for life as they provide crucial energy sources in the form of macronutrients, as well as important cofactors in the form of micronutrients, which regulate the functionality of enzymes during the regulation of anabolic and catabolic processes in human cells. Moreover, micronutrients can regulate gene transcription factors, such as the proinflammatory nuclear factor kappa B and the anti-inflammatory nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2. This review focuses on the role of vitamins (vitamin A, carotenoids, the vitamin B complex, vitamins C, D, and E, and coenzyme Q10) and minerals (calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, potassium, copper, manganese, and selenium) in human physiology and the impact of their deficiencies upon periodontal health and disease.

Comparative analysis of blood parameters of the erythrocyte lineage between patients with chronic periodontitis and healthy patients: Results obtained from a meta-analysis. Abstract
Objective Quantitatively evaluate blood parameters of the erythrocyte lineage in patients with chronic periodontitis and healthy controls by means of a meta-analysis. Material and methods A review of literature was performed in the scientific databases for studies published before September 2016. The abstracts were evaluated and the extraction of data performed by two examiners. The parameters assessed were: hemoglobin levels, number of circulating red blood cells, hematocrit, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration in patients with chronic periodontitis and healthy controls. The calculations were obtained through the statistical software Review Manager version 5.3, with calculation of Mean Difference, heterogeneity (I²) and funnel plot with P < 0.05. Results Nine case/control studies composed the results with 342 patients with chronic periodontitis and 359 healthy controls. There was a significant decrease in hemoglobin levels (MD = -1.60, 95% CI: -2.72, -0.48, P = 0.005) and number of circulating red blood cells (MD = -0.51, 95% CI: -0.78, -0.24, P = 0.0002), hematocrit (MD = -4.41, IC 95%: -7.13, -1.68, P = 0.002), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MD = -0.80; IC 95%: -1.38, -0,22, P = 0.007) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MD = -0.93, IC 95%: -1.63, -0.23, P = 0.009) in patients with chronic periodontitis when compared to healthy controls. No publication bias was found through the funnel plot asymmetry. Conclusion There is an associated of the reduction of hematological parameters (such as levels of hemoglobin and circulating red blood cells, hematocrit, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration) to patients with chronic periodontitis.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to determine the prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) amongst black South African women, describe GDM-associated risk factors and clinical management, and evaluate the efficacy of the fasting plasma glucose reading in diagnosing GDM. METHODS A cross-sectional screening study was performed. Pregnant women were recruited from the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Johannesburg. A total of 1906 women underwent a two-hour 75 g oral glucose tolerance test at 24-28 weeks gestation. The World Health Organization's 2013 criteria were used to diagnose GDM. RESULTS A total of 174/1906 (9.1% (95% confidence interval (CI) 7.9, 10.5)) women were diagnosed with GDM. These women had significantly higher weights and body mass indexes (BMIs), were significantly older, of higher household socioeconomic status, more likely to report a family history of diabetes, and more likely to be diagnosed with anaemia than women without GDM. An age of ≥35 years, BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2, and a family history of diabetes were significant risk factors. The fasting plasma glucose reading had a high sensitivity (83.3% (95% CI 77.0, 88.5)) in diagnosing GDM and 56.9% of the women with GDM were managed by diet therapy alone. CONCLUSION This is the largest GDM prevalence study in South Africa to date. A diagnosis of GDM increases the risk of both mother and child developing Type 2 diabetes which causes further health complications, decreases longevity, and burdens a country's healthcare system. Therefore, a GDM prevalence of 9.1% is concerning and warrants further discussion around current GDM screening policies.

Abstract
Trace mineral micronutrients are imperative for optimum host response. Populations worldwide are prone to their insufficiency owing to lifestyle changes or poor nutritional intake. Balanced levels of trace minerals like iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se) and copper (Cu) are essential to prevent progression of chronic conditions like periodontitis. Their excess as well as deficiency is detrimental to periodontal health. This is specifically true in relation to Fe. Furthermore, some trace elements, e.g. Se, Zn and Cu are integral components of antioxidant enzymes and prevent reactive oxygen species induced destruction of tissues. Their deficiency can worsen periodontitis associated with systemic conditions like diabetes mellitus. With this background, the present review first focusses on the role of four trace minerals, namely, Fe, Zn, Se and Cu in periodontal health followed by an appraisal of the data from case control studies related to their association with chronic periodontitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The role of viruses as members of the human microbiome has gained broader attention with the discovery that human body surfaces are inhabited by sizeable viral communities. The majority of the viruses identified in these communities have been bacteriophages that predate upon cellular microbiota rather than the human host. Phages have the capacity to lyse their hosts or provide them with selective advantages through lysogenic conversion, which could help determine the structure of co-existing bacterial communities. Because conditions such as periodontitis are associated with altered bacterial biota, phage mediated perturbations of bacterial communities have been hypothesized to play a role in promoting periodontal disease. Oral phage communities also differ significantly between periodontal health and disease, but the gene expression of oral phage communities has not been previously examined. RESULTS Here, we provide the first report of gene expression profiles from the oral bacteriophage community using RNA sequencing, and find that oral phages are more highly expressed in subjects with relative periodontal health. While lysins were highly expressed, the high proportion of integrases expressed suggests that prophages may account for a considerable proportion of oral phage gene expression. Many of the transcriptome reads matched phages found in the oral cavities of the subjects studied, indicating that phages may account for a substantial proportion of oral gene expression. Reads homologous to siphoviruses that infect Firmicutes were amongst the most prevalent transcriptome reads identified in both periodontal health and disease. Some genes from the phage lytic module were significantly more highly expressed in subjects with periodontal disease, suggesting that periodontitis may favor the expression of some lytic phages. CONCLUSIONS As we explore the contributions of viruses to the human microbiome, the data presented here suggest varying expression of bacteriophage communities in oral health and disease.
