Abstract
PURPOSE This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the potential of voice analysis as a prescreening tool for type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by examining the differences in voice recordings between non-diabetic and T2DM participants. METHODS 60 participants diagnosed as non-diabetic (n = 30) or T2DM (n = 30) were recruited on the basis of specific inclusion and exclusion criteria in Iran between February 2020 and September 2023. Participants were matched according to their year of birth and then placed into six age categories. Using the WhatsApp application, participants recorded the translated versions of speech elicitation tasks. Seven acoustic features [fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, harmonic-to-noise ratio (HNR), cepstral peak prominence (CPP), voice onset time (VOT), and formant (F1-F2)] were extracted from each recording and analyzed using Praat software. Data was analyzed with Kolmogorov-Smirnov, two-way ANOVA, post hoc Tukey, binary logistic regression, and student t tests. RESULTS The comparison between groups showed significant differences in fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, CPP, and HNR (p < 0.05), while there were no significant differences in formant and VOT (p > 0.05). Binary logistic regression showed that shimmer was the most significant predictor of the disease group. There was also a significant difference between diabetes status and age, in the case of CPP. CONCLUSIONS Participants with type II diabetes exhibited significant vocal variations compared to non-diabetic controls.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Age-related vocal atrophy (ARVA) is associated with vocal fold bowing, persistent glottal gap during phonation, and dysphonia. Bilateral medialization thyroplasty is sometimes performed in patients with ARVA to improve vocal fold closure and voice. We set out to quantify stroboscopic changes in vocal fold bowing, glottal closure, and abduction angle following bilateral thyroplasty and determine how these changes affect voice quality among patients with ARVA. METHODS Fifteen individuals with ARVA who underwent bilateral medialization thyroplasty were included in this study. Two independent investigators calculated bowing index (BI), normalized glottal gap area (NGGA), and maximum abduction angle from laryngostroboscopic exams using ImageJ™. Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V) and patient-reported measures were collected before and after thyroplasty. RESULTS Thyroplasty resulted in a 10-point improvement in overall CAPE-V (Mean dif -10; 95% CI -17, -3.3, p < 0.01) and VHI-10 (mean dif -3.8; 95% CI -9.8, 2.3, p = 0.19, n = 8). NGGA and BI significantly decreased following surgery (mean dif -78; 95% CI -155, -1.5, p = 0.05; and mean dif -2.1; 95% CI -2.4, -0.84, p < 0.01, respectively). BI correlated with CAPE-V scores (r = 0.66, 95% CI 0.22, 0.87, p < 0.01). When considering the normalized combined contributions of both NGGA and BI, there was a stronger correlation in CAPE-V scores (r = 0.87, 95% CI 0.50, 0.97, p < 0.01) compared with either measure alone. CONCLUSIONS Thyroplasty resulted in a decrease in vocal fold bowing, glottal gap area, and CAPE-V scores in patients with ARVA. Correction of vocal bowing and glottal gap, following bilateral thyroplasty, improved voice measures following surgery. Quantitative evaluation of vocal fold morphology may be valuable when assessing the severity and treatment-response in patients with ARVA following bilateral thyroplasty. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the study was to evaluate voice and swallowing function before thyroid surgery and to explore the possible role of thyroid enlargement and laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). METHODS We conducted a prospective study of patients who underwent hemi- or total thyroidectomy (n = 118) and compared the results with patients of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (n = 110). All subjects underwent videolaryngostroboscopy, filled in subjective evaluations of voice, swallowing and reflux complaints. Acoustic voice analysis (AVA), maximum phonation time (MPT) and perceptual voice evaluation were conducted. RESULTS We found no difference in voice quality between study and control group, neither in subjective complaints nor in AVA or perceptual evaluation. We did find indicative signs of minor laryngeal changes in thyroid group. Swallowing Impairment Score (SIS) revealed worse swallowing function in thyroid patients (p = 0.0006). Comparison of Reflux Symptom Index (RSI) scores revealed that thyroid group patients have higher values compared to control group (p = 0.006). Nevertheless, Reflux Finding Score (RFS) showed identical scores in both groups (p = 0.220). In thyroid group there was a strong positive correlation between RSI and SIS (ρ = 0.641), but no correlation between RFS and SIS (ρ = -0.002). In addition, we found a weak positive correlation between thyroid weight and RFS (ρ = 0.379). CONCLUSIONS Changes in laryngeal area caused by thyroid disorders do not lead to subjective but indicate slight objective disturbances in voice quality. We detected a decline in swallowing quality within thyroid patients. Higher RSI scores and a positive correlation between RFS and thyroid weight, indicate a possible role of thyroid gland in LPR.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Gender-affirming voice treatments, such as voice training and surgery, are highly impactful for transgender patients experiencing vocal dysphoria and may be discussed on social media platforms including Twitter and Reddit. Our goal was to characterize the content and sentiment of social media posts pertaining to gender-affirming voice interventions to better understand the needs of this patient population. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective data-mining study. METHODS A total of 18,695 Tweets from 2001 to 2021 and 23,742 r/Transvoice Reddit submissions and comments from 2009 to 2020 were extracted via publicly available application programming interfaces and analyzed using language processing and sentiment analysis techniques. One thousand eighty-six highly emotive r/Transvoice posts related to voice modification treatments were manually reviewed for further classification. RESULTS Online discussion of gender-affirming voice has increased over time and is centered on vocal feminization. Recurrent themes included use of online training resources, singing voice, and barriers to care such as cost and variable experiences with health care providers. Sentiment analysis demonstrated that posts discussing gender-affirming voice training had higher average sentiment scores than those discussing voice surgery, on both Twitter (0.252 vs 0.161; P < 0.001) and Reddit (0.349 vs 0.301; P < 0.001). Frequently appearing themes in highly negative surgery posts included mixed outcomes (9.3%), surgical complications (9.3%), and recovery time (8.5%). Common themes shared by the positive subgroup analysis included peer support, vocal quality, and importance of practice. CONCLUSIONS Gender-diverse patients share various concerns and resources relating to voice intervention in the online communities of Twitter and Reddit. The discussion has been growing over the past decade and is mostly positive, with significant social support and resource-sharing within the community. Aggregated online sentiment toward gender-affirming voice surgery is more negative than voice training, largely due to concerns about surgical outcomes and variability, risks, and recovery period.

Abstract
Cepstral measures are sensitive to gender, age and phonatory tasks. With a cepstral measure designated as the CPP, it was possible to confirm the vulnerability of the Fado singers' voice. These were established at the vocal pathological threshold, which suggests a need for a direct clinical approach for these voice users. OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS This study aimed to characterize cepstral peak prominence (CPP) and cepstral peak prominence smoothed (CPPS) in the Fado singing voice and to determine if there were significant differences in CPP and CPPS measures between spoken and sung tasks, as well as due to singers' gender and age. METHODS Forty seven males and 57 females Fado singers, ranging from 18 to 70 years participated in this study. Spoken voice tasks were sustained [a] and reading aloud the phonetically balanced text "O Sol". Sung tasks were sustained [a] of the word [ɐfinaɫ] and the Fado chorus song "Nem às paredes confesso". Acoustic measures included CPP and CPPS. CPP was measured using Analyses of Dysphonia in Speech and Voice software, of Multi-Speech program, Model 3700, by KayPENTAX. CPPS was measured using Praat software (4.2.1/2003). Statistical analysis was performed with an IBM SPSS Statistics version 22 program. CPP and CPPS mean differences of spoken and sung tasks were analyzed using paired samples t-test, with α at .05. RESULTS CPP and CPPS values of singers' voice changed according to the gender, age and phonatory tasks. There were significant differences between CPP and CPPS measures (P < 0.05). Generally, young male singers, in their sung task, presented the highest CPP and CPPS values. The highest CPP mean was obtained by older males in sustained spoken [a] and the lowest was obtained by younger males in their reading aloud task. For CPPS, the highest mean value was obtained by younger males during sung [a] and the lowest was by younger males in the reading aloud task. CONCLUSION Males presented higher cepstral measures than females. Young singers presented higher cepstral measures than older. Sung tasks had higher cepstral measures than spoken tasks. CPPS means are overall higher than CPP means. This study reinforces the need for a clinical prevention approach directed at potential vocal disorders in Fado singers.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this prospective case-control study was to determine the effect on the voice of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in paediatric patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included patients aged 6-18 years followed up for at least 1 year because of T1DM, and a control group of age and gender-matched healthy volunteers. Following an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) examination, all subjects underwent flexible endoscopic laryngeal examination. Fasting venous blood samples were taken in the morning for the examination of fasting blood glucose (FBG), HgbA1C, and kidney, liver, and thyroid function tests. Data were recorded from the patient files of age, gender, comorbidities, and the development of diabetes-related complications. Voice recordings were taken and the Voice Handicap Index (VHI)-10 form was completed. The patients and control group were compared in respect of the parameters of fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, and acoustic voice quality index (AVQI). RESULTS Evaluation was made of 64 children and adolescents as 32 in the patient group (Group 1) and 32 healthy control subjects (Group 2). Group 1 comprised 17 females and 15 males with a mean age of 12.75 ± 3.23 years. Group 2 comprised 17 females and 15 males with a mean age of 12.75 ± 3.33 years. In Group 1, mean disease duration was 5.21 ± 3.17 years (range, 1-13 years), the FBG value was mean 216.6 ± 122.3 mg/dl, mean HgbA1c was 10.7 ± 2.8, as ≤ 7 in 4 patients, 7-9 in 4, and > 9 in 24. Maximum phonation time (MPT) was determined as 10.66 ± 3.6 secs in Group 1 and 12.11 ± 4.43 in Group 2. VHI was determined as 2.33 ± 3 in Group 1 and 2.31 ± 2.77 in Group 2. No statistically significant difference was determined between the groups was determined in respect of acoustic analysis, perturbation parameters, AVQI and body mass index. CONCLUSIONS This study is the first to have investigated the effects of T1DM on the voice in paediatric patients. The study results showed that the AVQI value was higher in the patient group but not to a statistically significant level. Therefore, there is a need for further studies with larger samples. The current study can be of guidance for further studies in this field.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Digital videokymography based on high-speed videoendoscopy enables the evaluation of therapeutic techniques and voice training, such as the LaxVox technique, on vocal fold vibrations. This study investigated the immediate effects of the LaxVox technique on digital videokymographic parameters obtained through high-speed videolaryngoscopy in adults with voice complaints. STUDY DESIGN An experimental intrasubject comparative study of adults with voice complaints was conducted. METHODS Image processing software was used to analyze the videos and obtain digital videokymography parameters. The intraclass correlation coefficient was used to determine the intra-rater reliability of the analyzed parameters. The paired t test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used to compare digital videokymography parameters before and after the LaxVox technique, in sex-specific analyses. The significance level was set at 5%. RESULTS In total, 25 laryngeal images from 15 women and 10 men were analyzed. On digital videokymography analysis, the mean vocal fold opening in the posterior glottal region was decreased immediately after using the LaxVox technique in women. In contrast, no significant changes were found in other parameters compared to pre LaxVox technique values in both men and women with voice complaints. CONCLUSION Digital videokymography analysis revealed that the LaxVox technique reduces the mean vocal fold opening in the posterior glottal region of women with voice complaints.

Abstract
AIMS The objective of this scoping review is to synthesize all of the known information about the relationship between diabetes mellitus and voice quality and to explore its potential applications for new technology. METHODS We conducted a scoping literature review of articles published between March 2000 and September 2021 using the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase. Additionally, we did a manual search of Google Scholar. The search strategy abides by the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Studies pertaining to the relationship between diabetes and the voice were categorized separately for further evaluation. RESULTS Out of the 2732 originally identified articles, nine were ultimately included in this scoping review. The chosen articles address both diabetes and its impact on a variety of vocal parameters. CONCLUSIONS There is currently very little research investigating the relationship between diabetes, neuropathy, and phonatory symptoms. Additionally, existing publications contain some contradictory findings. Further research that incorporates imaging technology is needed to clarify the physiological explanations for the differences observed between healthy individuals and those with diabetes mellitus. Such information can be used to develop noninvasive technology for diabetes diagnosis and monitoring.

Abstract
Dysphonia is a symptom of many endocrine pathologies. Hoarseness, voice fatigue, decrease of the voice pitch, reduce of the range are typical complaints for hypothyroidism, caused by an increased amount of polysaccharides and accumulation of fluid in the lamina propria of the vocal folds. An excess of growth hormone causes an overproduction of insulin-like growth factor-1, which leads to abnormalities in the craniofacial region and proliferation of the upper respiratory tract tissues, including thickening of the laryngeal cartilages, vocal folds and decreasing of the voice pitch. Hyperglycemia, changes in the balance of fluid and electrolytes in diabetes mellitus can indirectly affect the voice: xerostomia complicates phonation due to impaired hydration of the laryngeal mucosa, diabetic neuropathy often disrupts the work of the laryngeal muscles involved in voice formation. Voice changes are observed not only in endocrine disorders, but also during puberty, the phases of the menstrual cycle and during menopause. Laryngeal structures are modified under the influence of hormones and external factors, which generally changes pitch and intensity of the voice, timbre and resonance, articulation and prosodic characteristics. The purpose of this review is to summarize and systematize data on physiological and pathological voice changes in patients of different age groups and sex. The possibilities of a multidisciplinary approach to rational voice correction are demonstrated.

Abstract
The aim of the present literature review is to describe the influence of sex hormones on the human voice in physiological conditions. As a secondary sexual organ, the larynx is affected by sex hormones and may change considerably over the lifespan. In the current review, sex hormone-related voice modifications occurring during childhood, puberty, the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and senescence are described. The roles of sex hormones (including gonadotropins, testosterone, estrogen, androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate) underlying physiological voice changes are discussed, the main differences between males and females are explained and clinical implications are taken into account.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder affecting various systems of the body. Only a few studies have focused on the effect of primary hypothyroidism on voice with objective parameters, and none of them compared the effect of subclinical and overt hypothyroidism on voice. The aim of the present study is to evaluate and compare the acoustic and perceptual parameters of voice in patients newly diagnosed with subclinical and overt hypothyroidism. METHODS The study included 26 subclinical hypothyroidism, 26 overt hypothyroidism patients and 30 euthyroid control participants. Perceptual evaluation of voice with GRBAS (grade, roughness, breathiness, asthenia, strain) scale, voice handicap index (VHI)-10, and acoustic voice analysis by using Multi-Dimensional Voice Program were performed for all the participants. RESULTS The voice parameters which showed a statistically significant difference between the groups were frequency parameters (Fo; p= 0.003, Fhi; p=0.010, Flo; p= 0.002) and VHI-10 (p= 0.047). A statistically significant decrease in frequency parameters and a statistically significant increase in VHI-10 were found in overt hypothyroidism group comparing with control group (Fo; p= 0.002, Fhi; p=0.009, Flo; p= 0.001 and VHI-10; p= 0.046). Voice parameters in subclinical hypothyroidism group did not show a statistically significant difference comparing with both control and overt hypothyroidism groups. CONCLUSION In the present study, overt hypothyroidism is found to affect frequency parameters and patients' own subjective assessment of voice. Primary hypothyroidism does not seem to have significant effect on voice parameters until thyroxine levels are affected.

Abstract
Thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland located in the neck region. Hormones are secreted by the thyroid gland that is responsible for various functions that maintain metabolism of the body. The variance in secretion of the hormones causes disorders such as Hyperthyroidism or Hypothyroidism. Electroglottography signal is a bio signal which represents the impedance that exist between the glottis regions. The study aims at design and development of an hardware circuit for the acquisition of Electroglottogram signal from normal and thyroid subjects is proposed followed by feature extraction from the acquired bio signal is performed. Further, machine learning classifiers were used to classify the normal and thyroid individuals. This modality of acquisition is non-invasive. Performance evaluation is done by testing various classifiers to study the accuracy. The classifiers tested were Random Forest, Random Tree, Bayes Net, Multilayer Perceptron, Simple Logistic classifier, and One-R classifier. Classifiers such as Random Forest, Random Tree, and Multilayer Perceptron showed high accuracy. The accuracy estimated by these classifiers was tested and its ROC curves with AUC scores were derived. The highest accuracy was reported for Simple Logistic classifier which was about 95.1%. Random Forest and Random Tree reported 93.5% and 91.9% respectively. Similarly, Multilayer Perceptron and Bayes Net gave 93.5% and 91.9%. The One-R classifier algorithm reported the lowest accuracy of 90.3% among the studied classifier algorithms. The ROC-AUC score for the classifiers were also reported to be more than 0.9 which is considered more promising and supports the acquisition and processing methodology. Hence the proposed technique can be efficiently used to diagnose thyroid non-invasively.

Abstract
Verbal communication is one of the most sophisticated human motor skills reflecting both-the mental and physical health of an individual. Voice parameters and quality changes are usually secondary towards functional and/or structural laryngological alterations under specific systemic processes, syndrome and pathologies. These include but are not restricted to dry mouth and Sicca syndromes, body dehydration, hormonal alterations linked to pubertal, menopausal, and andropausal status, respiratory disorders, gastrointestinal reflux, autoimmune diseases, endocrinologic disorders, underweight versus overweight and obesity, and diabetes mellitus. On the other hand, it is well-established that stress overload is a significant risk factor of cascading pathologies, including but not restricted to neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and cancers. Our current study revealed voice perturbations under the stress overload as a potentially useful biomarker to identify individuals in suboptimal health conditions who might be strongly predisposed to associated pathologies. Contextually, extended surveys applied in the population might be useful to identify, for example, persons at high risk for respiratory complications under pandemic conditions such as COVID-19. Symptoms of dry mouth syndrome, disturbed microcirculation, altered sense regulation, shifted circadian rhythm, and low BMI were positively associated with voice perturbations under the stress overload. Their functional interrelationships and relevance for cascading associated pathologies are presented in the article. Automated analysis of voice recordings via artificial intelligence (AI) has a potential to derive digital biomarkers. Further, predictive machine learning models should be developed that allows for detecting a suboptimal health condition based on voice recordings, ideally in an automated manner using derived digital biomarkers. Follow-up stratification and monitoring of individuals in suboptimal health conditions are recommended using disease-specific cell-free nucleic acids (ccfDNA, ctDNA, mtDNA, miRNA) combined with metabolic patterns detected in body fluids. Application of the cost-effective targeted prevention within the phase of reversible health damage is recommended based on the individualised patient profiling.

Abstract
The voice results in acoustic signals analyzed and synthetized at first for telecommunication matters, and more recently investigated for medical purposes. In particular, voice signal characteristics can evidence individual health conditions useful for screening, diagnostic and remote monitoring aims. Within this frame, the knowledge of baseline features of healthy voice is mandatory, in order to balance a comparison with their unhealthy counterpart. However, the baseline features of the human voice depend on gender, age-range and ethnicity and, as far as we know, no work reports as those features spread worldwide. This paper intends to cover this lack. Our database research yielded 179 relevant published studies, retrieved using digital libraries of IEEE Xplore, Scopus, Web of Science, Iop Science, Taylor and Francis Online, and Scitepress. These relevant studies report different features, among which here we consider the most investigated ones, within the most investigated age-range. In particular, the features are the fundamental frequency, the jitter, the shimmer, the harmonic-to-noise ratio, and the cepstral peak prominence, the most investigated age-range is within 20-40 years and, related to the ethnicity, 20 countries are considered.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The normal aging process affects many human functions profoundly. The voice is no exception, and some aging effects on the voice are obvious including vocal fold atrophy, bowing, stiffness, more prominent vocal fold processes, and glottic insufficiency. The study's primary aim was to determine the correlation between presbylarynx and laryngeal electromyography (LEMG) results and to compare these electromyography (EMG) results with young and old voice patients without evidence of presbylarynx changes on strobovideolaryngoscopy. METHODS Medical records for voice patients seen in the senior author's (RTS) practice between 2015 and 2019 were reviewed retrospectively. Patients with presbylarynx confirmed by strobovideolaryngoscopy were identified and compared to two control groups. The first control group included patients with ages and American Society of Anesthesiologists scores similar to the experimental group but no presbylarynx. The second control group included younger patients (ages ranging between 18 and 35 years with mean age of 24.57 years) with vocal fold paresis. All groups had undergone LEMG because of suspected paresis clinically. Social and medical factors reviewed and compared between groups included smoking history, alcohol consumption, occupation (voice demanding versus not voice demanding occupation), Voice Handicap Index score at the initial office visit, medical comorbidities, medications, and LEMG results. RESULTS There was no significant difference in the recruitment results for three pairs of muscles (cricothyroid, thyroarytenoid and posterior cricoarytenoid) between the presbylarynx group and both control groups. Rate of asthma was higher in presbylarynx group compared with the first control group. Rates of corticosteroid inhaler use, thyroid medications, smoking, and Voice Handicap Index score were higher in presbylarynx group compared with the second control group. There was no significant difference in occupation type and alcohol consumption between groups. CONCLUSION There was no significant difference found in the neuromuscular function based on laryngeal EMG between presbylarynx patients and both old and young patients with vocal fold paresis but without presbylarynx. Corticosteroid inhaler is associated with atrophic changes seen in presbylarynx. There still could be differences in the neuromuscular function which weren't detected. More research is needed to confirm or refute these findings.

Abstract
Hypothyroidism is a clinical syndrome caused by thyroid hormone deficiency due to reduced production, deranged distribution, or lack of effects of thyroid hormone. The prevalence of hypothyroidism in developed countries is around 4-5%, whereas it is about 11% in India, only 2% in the UK, and 4·6% in the USA. It is more common in women than in men. Hypothyroidism has multiple etiologies and manifestations. The most common clinical manifestations are weight gain, loss of hair, cold intolerance, lethargy, constipation, dry skin, and change in voice. The signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism differ with age, gender, severity of condition, and some other factors. The diagnosis is based on clinical history, physical examination and serum level of FT3, FT4, and thyroid-stimulating hormone, imaging studies, procedures, and histological findings. The treatment of choice for hypothyroidism is levothyroxine, however; in this review article, we have discussed the epidemiology, etiology, clinical sign and symptoms, diagnosis, complications, and management of hypothyroidism in modern medicine and a comparative treatment by the Unani system of medicine (USM). In the USM, the main emphasis of the principle of treatment (Usool-e-Ilaj) is to correct the abnormal constitution (Su-e-Mizaj) and alter the six prerequisites for existence (Asbab-e-Sitta Zarooriya) to restore normal health. It is a packaged treatment, that is, different components of treatment are given as a package form which includes different drugs, dosages form, and regimens.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Active acromegaly is characterized by Growth Hormone and Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF)-1 excess. Voice complaints are common in active acromegaly and are suggested to be caused by effects of Growth Hormone or IGF-1 on vocal cords and the surrounding soft tissues. Prospective studies on the course of voice characteristics in acromegaly patients are scarce and results are conflicting. This study investigates objective changes in voice parameters, self-reported perception of voice and laryngostroboscopic features during the first 2.5 years of acromegaly treatment. MATERIAL AND METHOD In this prospective study, acoustic voice analysis (and videolaryngostroboscopic examination were performed in 27 consecutive treatment-naive acromegaly patients at diagnosis (T0), after 1 year (T1) and after 2.5 years (T2) of treatment. The voice handicap index (VHI-30) questionnaire was taken. RESULTS During acromegaly treatment, VHI scores decreased, and mucosal edema & hypertrophy diminished. No significant changes in objective voice parameters were detected. The within-subject change in serum IGF-1 levels (97.3 (40.6-208) to 22.4 (10.2-34.1) nmol/L (P < 0.001)) during follow-up correlated positively with the changes in VHI questionnaire scores (R 0.32-0.45; P = 0.002-0.03). CONCLUSIONS At diagnosis and during acromegaly treatment, mean VHI scores were in the normal range, although they decreased during follow-up. Mucosal edema and hypertrophy largely resolved during treatment. No significant changes in objective voice parameters were observed. Voice characteristics are in the normal range in patients with acromegaly, but may change during treatment. However, voice complaints are important to discuss, since they may influence quality of life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to investigate if there are differences in acoustic parameters between diabetic patients and normal controls. METHODS A prospective cross-sectional study was performed in 83 diabetic patients and 70 healthy controls. Voice parameters including fundamental frequency (F0), jitter, shimmer, amplitude perturbation quotient, noise-to-harmonic ratio, smoothed amplitude perturbation quotient, and relative average perturbation were analyzed using Computerized Speech Lab with the Multi-Dimensional Voice Program. RESULTS F0 in female diabetic patients was significantly lower than controls (222.23 ± 27.89 Hz versus 241.08 ± 28.21 Hz, P< 0.01). In female diabetic subgroups with disease duration more than 10 years, poor glycemic control, or neuropathy, the F0 was still significantly lower. Multivariate analysis showed that F0 was significantly associated with diabetes after controlled for age, body mass index, presence of hypertension, and dyslipidemia. (P= 0.022). However, F0 was not able to predict the presence of diabetes as shown by logistic regression analysis (P= 0.243). CONCLUSIONS Voice fundamental frequency is lower in females with diabetes. However, voice fundamental frequency cannot adequately predict the presence of diabetes.

Abstract
Objective This study investigated acoustic and perceptual characteristics of the voice of patients with thyroid gland disorders such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism immediately after the diagnosis was made and six months later, after using drug therapy. Materials and Methods The study includes 20 female outpatients with hypothyroidism and 27 female outpatients with hyperthyroidism. The criterion for the selection of the patients was a thyroid gland disorder medical diagnosis, no history of voice disorders and absence of other possible causes of voice changes. Acoustic, perceptual and aerodynamic parameters were assessed. Acoustic analysis was performed by specific software. Experienced speech and language pathologists made perceptual voice assessment by using grade, roughness, breathiness, asthenia, and strain (GRBAS) scale. Results Significant differences in patients with hypothyroidism were established on parameter amplitude perturbation, jitter and noise-to-harmonics ratio between pretreatment and posttreatment period, in which patients took drug therapy. In group of patients with hyperthyroidism significant difference was noted only on aerodynamic parameter maximum phonation time. There were a significant differences in all perceptual parameters in both groups of patients (p<0.05) in pre and posttreatment, except on grade and asthenia parameter in the group of patients with hypothyroidism and parameter grade was borderline insignificant in the group of patients with hyperthyroidism. Conclusion Voice quality is affected by thyroid disease. Thyroid gland disorders cause minor changes in acoustic voice parameters of patients with hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, but perceptual deviations in these patients are especially noticeable.

Abstract
In female terrestrial mammals, vocal aging has only been studied in humans and pandas. In cervids displaying convergent sex dimorphism of vocal apparatus with humans, vocal aging is only investigated in males. This cross-sectional study examined acoustic variables of nasal (closed-mouth) and oral (open-mouth) contact calls of 32 farmed Iberian red deer hinds (Cervus elaphus hispanicus) aged of 4-18 years and their relationships with caller´s age, weight, social discomfort score (bites of other hinds on hind pelt) and body condition score (fat reserves). Decrease of fundamental frequency was associated with age in both oral and nasal calls, but more prominently in the nasal calls. An increase in call duration, peak frequency and power quartiles was associated with a higher degree of bites due to social aggression. Weight and body condition weakly influenced acoustic traits. We discuss that vocal aging of hinds parallels that of vocal aging in human females.

Abstract
The menstrual cycle is a physiological phenomenon that is accompanied by several hormonal fluctuations involving oestrogen and progesterone. Oestrogen and progesterone exert several physiological effects. There are many questions pertaining to the influence of the physiology of menstruation on anaesthesia. We attempted to find out whether the phase of the menstrual cycle can alter the physiological functions during anaesthesia, the perioperative management and outcomes. We performed a literature search in Google Scholar, PubMed and Cochrane databases for original and reviewed articles on the phases of the menstrual cycle and their relation to anaesthesia-related physiological parameters to find an answer to these questions. Many studies have shown that women, perimenstrually, may have increased pain perception, exacerbation of systemic diseases, vocal cord/peripheral oedema and post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV). Some of the other notable findings in most studies were sleep disturbances in the luteal phase (LP), increased occurrence of PONV in the ovulatory phase and a lower requirement of intravenous sedative and anaesthetic drug requirements in the LP. We found contradictory results concerning pain perception and PONV in relation to the follicular and LPs. However, we found that literature regarding the phase of the menstrual cycle and the haemodynamic response to intubation, anaesthesia-induced hypnosis and perioperative blood loss is relatively scarce. Thus, there is a need to conduct good quality research on these topics.

Abstract
Introduction: Gender dysphoria (GD) (DMS-5) is a condition marked by increasing psychological suffering that accompanies the incongruence between one's experienced or expressed gender and one's assigned gender. Manifestation of GD can be seen early on during childhood and adolescence. During this period, the development of undesirable sexual characteristics marks an acute suffering of being opposite to the sex of birth. Pubertal suppression with gonadotropin releasing hormone analogs (GnRHa) has been proposed for these individuals as a reversible treatment for postponing the pubertal development and attenuating psychological suffering. Recently, increased interest has been observed on the impact of this treatment on brain maturation, cognition and psychological performance. Objectives: The aim of this clinical report is to review the effects of puberty suppression on the brain white matter (WM) during adolescence. WM Fractional anisotropy, voice and cognitive functions were assessed before and during the treatment. MRI scans were acquired before, and after 22 and 28 months of hormonal suppression. Methods: We performed a longitudinal evaluation of a pubertal transgender girl undergoing hormonal treatment with GnRH analog. Three longitudinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were performed for diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), regarding Fractional Anisotropy (FA) for regions of interest analysis. In parallel, voice samples for acoustic analysis as well as executive functioning with the Wechsler Intelligence Scale (WISC-IV) were performed. Results: During the follow-up, white matter fractional anisotropy did not increase, compared to normal male puberty effects on the brain. After 22 months of pubertal suppression, operational memory dropped 9 points and remained stable after 28 months of follow-up. The fundamental frequency of voice varied during the first year; however, it remained in the female range. Conclusion: Brain white matter fractional anisotropy remained unchanged in the GD girl during pubertal suppression with GnRHa for 28 months, which may be related to the reduced serum testosterone levels and/or to the patient's baseline low average cognitive performance.Global performance on the Weschler scale was slightly lower during pubertal suppression compared to baseline, predominantly due to a reduction in operational memory. Either a baseline of low average cognition or the hormonal status could play a role in cognitive performance during pubertal suppression. The voice pattern during the follow-up seemed to reflect testosterone levels under suppression by GnRHa treatment.
