Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine if gonadectomy in dogs is associated with the risk of cranial cruciate ligament disease (CrCLD) and to quantify the magnitude of the association. STUDY DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis. SAMPLE POPULATION Comparative studies with gonadectomized and entire dogs, with CrCLD as an outcome measure. METHODS A systematic search of the primary and gray literature was performed. The effect size of the outcome measure was defined as the OR and 95% CI. Subgroup analysis was performed with sex, breed, and age at gonadectomy. A pooled OR (95% CI) was generated from meta-analysis of relevant studies. Certainty in the body of evidence was rated with the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) framework. RESULTS The literature search yielded 1398 results and 24 relevant studies were included for synthesis. Gonadectomized female (pooled OR = 2.293, 95% CI = 1.768-2.945) and male (pooled OR = 2.117, 95% CI = 1.665-2.691) dogs were both at increased odds of developing CrCLD in comparison with entire female and male dogs, respectively. Subgroup analysis showed that gonadectomy at 1 year or less was consistently associated with an increase in odds of developing CrCLD in both sexes. Overall certainty in the evidence was rated as moderate. All included studies were observational and no controlled trials were available. CONCLUSION In data with moderate certainty, gonadectomy is associated with increased odds of developing CrCLD in both sexes, particularly in dogs gonadectomized at 1 year of age or less. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This study provides an estimate of the true effect size of gonadectomy on the odds of developing CrCLD, which may be useful for clinical decision making surrounding gonadectomy and the timing of gonadectomy.

Abstract
This research investigates the biomechanical effects of a novel ceramic implant for the treatment of canine cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) based on the tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) method using finite element analysis (FEA). A 3D FEA of the tibiofemoral joint simulating the applied forces (44.5% of body weight) during the mid-stance phase (joint angle 135°) of the dog's stride was performed. Three conditions were considered for each joint: the physiological condition, the pathological condition with CCLR and the restored condition after TTA. Eight cadavers were used to create fifteen paired knee joints. The results showed significant differences in the forces that could be measured in the patellar tendon (PT) and in the cranial displacement of the tibial tuberosity between the conditions. The PT forces increased in the pathological state and continued to increase in the restored state, while the cranial displacement of the tibial tuberosity increased in the pathological state and decreased again in the restored state. Correlation analyses revealed significant correlations between PT forces, body weight and cranial displacement. The FEA provides initial insights into the force distribution and functionality of the ceramic implant. However, further testing is required to validate reliability and evaluate the efficacy of the implant.

Abstract
This study aimed at evaluating the changes in passive range of motion (ROM) of the stifle joint associated with cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture in dogs and assessing whether the surgical treatment carried out on the affected joints affected additional changes. A retrospective cohort study design was used. The clinical records of dogs treated with tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA), tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) and tight rope (TR) were reviewed as were the extension angle (EA), flexion angle (FA) and lameness. The data recorded at T0, before surgery, were compared with the data at 1 month and 6 months post-surgery. The data were classified as normal or abnormal. The main results obtained one month after surgery indicated that dogs treated with TTA showed a significant worsening of flexion (the FA was abnormal in 69.6% of dogs at T0 and 80.4% at T1 with p = 0.0208). Dogs treated with TPLO achieved asignificant improvement in extension (the EA was normal in 16.7% of dogs at T0 and in 33.3% at T1 with p < 0.0001), and in flexion (the FA was normal in 23.8% of dogs at T0 and 43.5% at T6 with p = 0.0434). The dogs treated with TR showed a significant worsening of extension (the EA was abnormal in 68.8% of dogs at T0 and in 81.3% at T1 with p = 0.0024). Six months post-surgery, the ROM value was not normal in 100% of the stifle joints; however, the lameness significantly improved with each procedure. This study confirmed the influence of surgical procedures on changes in ROM and provided useful indications for planning therapy to improve and speed up the postoperative rehabilitation process in dogs.

Abstract
Objective The objective of this study was to examine outcomes in dogs with cruciate ligament rupture (CR) that had chronic radiographic cranial tibial subluxation at the time of osteotomy healing after tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO). Study Design. Retrospective case analysis of 12 dogs with prospective follow-up. Four of the 12 dogs were prospectively studied 12-24 months after surgery to assess long-term radiographic and clinical outcomes. Results Three of the 4 dogs showed improvement in radiographic cranial tibial subluxation at long-term follow-up. In the other dog, minimally improved cranial tibial subluxation was associated with severe lameness. At long-term follow-up, gait analysis in 3 dogs with improved subluxation showed the symmetry of weight-bearing within 10% for peak vertical force, and no clinically lameness. Preoperative tibial plateau angle (TPA) and radiographic osteoarthritis in dogs with prospective follow-up and all dogs treated with TPLO surgery in the study period were not significantly different. Conclusion Dogs with chronic radiographic cranial tibial subluxation are acceptable candidates for TPLO. Radiographic improvement in stifle reduction may take more than 10 weeks. The dog with long-term persistent subluxation also had a higher TPA over time, suggestive of ineffective surgical correction with TPLO and treatment failure.

Abstract
CASE HISTORY Two mature, large breed dogs presented with chronic lameness and discomfort localised to the stifle. CLINICAL FINDINGS No hindlimb deformities were present on physical examination or radiographic evaluation. No stifle instability was present. Arthroscopy revealed severe (grade 5/5 modified Outerbridge score) cartilage erosion in the lateral compartment (femorotibial), marked degeneration of the lateral meniscus and early cranial cruciate ligament disease in both patients. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME Medial-closing, medially translating, centre-of-rotation-of-angulation-based, levelling osteotomy (mcmtCBLO) was performed in both patients. The procedure aims to shift the pelvic limb's mechanical axis medially to reduce pressure in the lateral compartment while also reducing craniocaudal shear forces by lowering the tibial plateau angle.Eight weeks after surgery one patient's lameness had resolved while the other had improved significantly. Second-look arthroscopy performed at this time revealed fibrocartilage formation in the lateral compartment without progression of cruciate disease in both cases. At long-term follow-up (approximately 3 and 5 years), favourable outcomes (no or minimal lameness, mild or moderate osteoarthritis) were identified on the long-term owner survey, lameness examination and radiographs. CLINICAL RELEVANCE mcmtCBLO reduced or eliminated short- and long-term lameness in these two cases afflicted by concurrent lateral compartment and early cranial cruciate ligament disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare motor effects and analgesic efficacy following an ultrasound-guided lateral approach to lumbar plexus blockade at L7 and sciatic nerve blockade (LPSNB) against epidural injection in dogs undergoing tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO). STUDY DESIGN Prospective, randomized, blinded clinical trial. ANIMALS A total of 27 healthy adult dogs undergoing unilateral TPLO surgery. METHODS Dogs were allocated to either LPSNB (bupivacaine 2 mg kg-1, 0.75%) or epidural (morphine PF 0.1 mg kg-1 and bupivacaine 0.5 mg kg-1, 0.75%). Other aspects of clinical management were identical, including anesthetic drug protocol, area of presurgical clipping and bladder care. Time to perform the block, response to surgical stimuli, pain scores, rescue analgesia, time to stand and walk, motor score and time to first urination were recorded. One evaluator, unaware of treatment status, performed all evaluations. Student's t-test or Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare continuous variables between groups, and Fisher's exact test for categorical variables. RESULTS Median (range) times to stand and walk were shorter for LPSNB [60 (40-120) minutes and 90 (60-150) minutes, respectively, p = 0.003] than for epidural [150 (120-240) minutes and 180 (120-360) minutes, respectively, p = 0.006]. Four dogs required rescue intraoperatively (three in epidural group, one in LPSNB group, p = 0.438). Pain scores over the 24 hour evaluation period were similar, and not significantly different, for each group. Time to spontaneous urination [LPSNB, 330 (240-360) minutes; epidural, 300 (120-1440) minutes, p = 1.0] did not differ between groups. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE An ultrasound-guided lateral paravertebral approach to the lumbar plexus within the psoas compartment at L7, combined with sciatic nerve blockade, allows faster return to normal motor function, with similar pain control and impact on urination when compared with epidural in dogs after TPLO surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Both tibial tuberosity fractures and deviation from the planned postoperative tibial plateau angle have been associated with poor centring of tibial plateau levelling osteotomies (TPLOs). The aim of this cadaveric study was to compare two techniques for centring the osteotomy and preserving the tibial tuberosity width (TTW). METHODS Stifle radiographs were obtained from 20 limbs of 10 dogs. TPLO was planned on each stifle, and a two-wire technique (TWT) and a technique using the medial collateral ligament (MCL) as an intraoperative landmark were planned. The techniques were executed and marked with radiopaque pins. Further radiographs were obtained and analysed. RESULTS On average, TWT resulted in a 20.4% increase in TTW and medial collateral ligament technique (MCLT) resulted in a 13.4% decrease. Expressed as a percentage of the radial saw size, the average error in the centring of the osteotomy arising from the TWT was 13.4% and that from the MCLT was 14.2%. LIMITATIONS This study had a small sample size and involved a single surgeon. CONCLUSION Neither technique reliably identified the desired centre of the osteotomy, and both had a similar magnitude of error. MCLT resulted in reduced TTW, while TWT resulted in increased TTW. A reduced TTW has been associated with an increased risk of tibial tuberosity fracture, so MCLT is not recommended for clinical use.

Abstract
Case summary An 11-year-old female neutered domestic shorthair cat was referred for surgical management of a traumatic right stifle luxation. Orthopaedic examination of the affected stifle under general anaesthesia revealed joint effusion and craniocaudal and rotational instability. Cranial displacement of the tibia with respect to the femur and infrapatellar pad sign were identified on radiography. Intraoperatively, complete rupture of both cruciate ligaments and marked disruption of the mid and caudal poles of the medial and lateral menisci were observed. Both collateral ligaments appeared intact. The remnants of the injured cruciate ligaments were removed, and medial and lateral caudal hemimeniscectomies were performed. A tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO) was performed to address the craniocaudal stifle instability. Intraoperative assessment of the stifle revealed persistent instability with cranial tibial translation, internal and external rotation, and a positive caudal draw test. A lateral augmentation suture was employed to address the persistent cranial tibial translation and internal rotation. To successfully neutralise caudocranial and external rotational instability secondary to the caudal cruciate ligament deficiency, a medial augmentation suture was placed with the aid of three interference screws. Stifle stability was achieved. A modified Robert-Jones bandage was kept on for 24 h postoperatively. An excellent outcome was achieved, with successful limb function restoration. Relevance and novel information This case report represents the first documented instance of feline traumatic stifle luxation repair by combining a corrective tibial osteotomy and extra-articular augmentation. Notably, it introduces the novel technique of implementing a TPLO with medial and lateral augmentation sutures to address multidirectional stifle instability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of contralateral cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) in dogs 8 years of age or older, weighing more than or equal to 15 kg at the time of first-side CCLR and to assess associated risks. STUDY DESIGN It is a cross-sectional retrospective study of 831 client-owned dogs METHODS: Medical records of dogs weighing more than or equal to 15 kgs that were more than or equal to 8 years of age at the time of first CCLR diagnosis were reviewed. Data collected included weight, sex, pre-operative tibial plateau angle, co-morbidities, time between diagnosis of first CCLR and diagnosis of contralateral CCLR. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to estimate odds ratio. A median follow-up period of over 112.7 months (25th/75th quartiles 75.4/157.7 months) from first CCLR diagnosis was allotted. RESULTS Eight-hundred thirty-one dogs were identified and included. About 19.1% (159/831 dogs, 95% confidence interval: 16.6-22.0%) of dogs that experience a first-side CCLR at 8 years of age or older will rupture the contralateral side, a median of 12.9 months (25th/75th quartiles 6.5/24.3 months) later. Age (p = 0.003) and breed, Golden Retrievers (p = 0.028) and Labrador Retrievers (p = 0.007), were factors significantly associated with contralateral CCLR. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The prevalence of contralateral CCLR in medium-to-large breed dogs more than or equal to 8 years of age old is less than previously reported and the risk decreases as they age. This important information will help guide owners when deciding to pursue surgical stifle stabilization following CCLR in older dogs.

Abstract
Cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) disease is a common orthopedic disease in canine patients. Tibial osteotomy procedures for the treatment of cranial cruciate ligament disease in small breed dogs (<15 kg) have previously been limited. A total of 22 client-owned dogs, 26 stifles, with cranial cruciate ligament disease were treated with novel mini-tibial tuberosity advancement plates. The most common intraoperative complications included the need for plate-cage overlap in 7 stifles (26.92%) and screw head fracture in 1 (3.85%). Post-operative complications included tibial tuberosity fracture (3.85%), post-operative medial patella luxation (7.69%), and persistent lameness (7.69%). Of the 26 stifles evaluated in the medium term (>6-12 months) post-operatively, 92.3% had no lameness, with the remaining 7.7% having Grade 1 lameness. A good to excellent clinical outcome was noted in all 26 stifles that underwent TTA with novel mini plates.

Abstract
Introduction The cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) is one of numerous structures which determine the path of the tibia relative to the femur when passively flexing/extending the stifle of the dog. The effect of cutting the CCL on passive motion with the hind limb in different orientations, is unknown. The aim of this study was to describe passive movement of the tibia relative to the femur in dogs, with the hind limb in three different orientations, and with CCL intact and cut. Methods Ten cadaveric hind limbs were obtained from dogs weighing between 20 kg and 25 kg and prepared for testing in a custom-built joint testing machine. Each hind limb was tested in three different orientations with data collected, using an electromagnetic tracking system, during 2 cycles of flexion/extension with the CCL intact and cut. Each cycle was initiated with the stifle in full extension (0°) and data was collected at 0°, 20°, 30°, 40°, 45°, and 55° of stifle flexion/extension. Results Flexion of the stifle resulted in caudal translation and internal rotation of the tibia relative to the femur, with cranial translation and external rotation occurring during extension along the identical path. Cutting the cranial cruciate ligament did not result in significant differences in translation or rotation when the stifle was orientated to approximated the standing position of a dog. Discussion Isometric points at the origin and insertion of the CCL can potentially be identified in CCL deficient stifles using a technique based on passive motion of an intact stifle.

Abstract
Canine stifle joint osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by damage and degeneration of the articular cartilage and subchondral bone, bony hypertrophy at the margins, and synovial joint membrane changes. Non-invasive imaging modalities, such as digital radiography (DR), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), can be used to describe these changes. However, the value of MRI in diagnosing spontaneous canine OA and the comparison of different imaging modalities have seldom been addressed. This study compared multiple noninvasive imaging modalities in canine spontaneous stifle OA cases. Four client-owned dogs with five spontaneously affected OA stifle joints were recruited and underwent DR, CT, and MRI. Information on osteophytes/enthesophytes, ligament/tendon lesions, synovial effusion and membrane thickening, subchondral bone lesions, and meniscal and cartilage lesions were scored and compared. The results showed that MRI provides the most comprehensive and superior lesion detection sensitivity for ligament, meniscus, cartilage, and synovial effusions. DR provides adequate bony structure information, while CT provides the most delicate images of bony structure lesions. These imaging findings may provide further understanding of the disease and help clinicians draft a more precise treatment plan.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate demographic risk factors associated with unilateral cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture diagnosis and to explore demographic and clinical risk factors associated with management of unilateral CCL rupture in dogs under primary veterinary care in the UK. A retrospective cohort study design was used. Clinical records were automatically searched and manually verified for incident cases of unilateral CCL rupture during 2019 and additional clinical management information extracted. Multivariable logistic regression modelling was used to evaluate associations between risk factors and: (1) CCL rupture diagnosis; and (2) clinical management (surgical or non-surgical). The analysis included 1000 unilateral CCL rupture cases and a random selection of 500,000 non-cases. After accounting for confounding factors, dogs aged 6 to < 9 years, male neutered and female neutered dogs, insured dogs, and Rottweiler, Bichon Frise, and West Highland White terrier breeds, in particular, had increased odds of unilateral CCL rupture diagnosis. Insured dogs and dogs ≥ 20 kg had increased odds of surgical management, while dogs ≥ 9 years and dogs with one non-orthopaedic comorbidity at diagnosis with CCL rupture had reduced odds. These findings inform identification of at-risk dogs, with Rottweilers and Bichon Frise particularly predisposed. Additionally, they contribute to a greater understanding of the clinical rationales used in primary-care veterinary practices to decide between surgical or non-surgical management of unilateral CCL rupture.

Abstract
The spontaneous rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament in dogs remains a pathoetiologic puzzle. Despite much progress in research over the past years, the systemic and local mechanisms leading to ligament degeneration and structural failure remain largely obscure. This scoping review focuses on pathogenesis and aims at summarizing and interpreting today's knowledge on causes of canine cruciate ligament rupture, i.e., the multifactorial mechanisms leading to degenerative stifle joint disease with collagen matrix degeneration and structural failures. Thus, the initial view of traumatic ligament rupture, fostered by "wear and tear", has clearly been replaced by a new concept of systemic processes linked to progressive degenerative joint disease and ligament failure; thus, the term "cranial cruciate ligament disease" has been coined and is generally accepted. In addition, cruciate ligament rupture in people shares some similarities with the lesion in dogs; therefore, the review also includes comparative studies. The methods used were based on the PRISMA-ScR model (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews).

Abstract
Cranial cruciate ligament disease is a common pathological condition in dogs that is often presented in daily clinical practice. Different risk factors for the development of this condition include breed, sex, age, bodyweight and neuter status, as well as different biological and biomechanical mechanisms. In the literature, special attention has been paid to the role of the tibial plateau angle in damage to the cranial cruciate ligament. Although the disease was first described at the beginning of last century, and since then different surgical methods have been developed to treat it, its aetiology remains unclear. In this review, contemporary literature data related to the role of tibial plateau angle in canine cranial cruciate ligament rupture are presented.

Abstract
The main aims of the study were to describe bone alignment differences in Yorkshire Terriers (YT) with cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR), patellar luxation (PL), or with a combination of both (CCLR + PL); to verify the theory of increased strain on cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) due to PL as a predisposing factor; and to evaluate intra- and inter-observer variability of the protocols developed for measurement of femoral and tibial alignment in Yorkshire Terriers. Fifty-five hindlimbs of YT were divided into four groups: Control, CCLR, PL, and CCLR + PL. Thirty parameters were radiographically evaluated including hip joint, femoral, tibial, and intercondylar fossa (ICF) parameters. Three observers evaluated all parameters on two separate occasions with a twelve-week interval between measurements. Significant differences in conjunction with CCLR and PL theories between groups were noticed in: Norberg angle (NA), quadriceps angle (Qa), anatomic lateral distal femoral angle (aLDFA), femoral varus (FVA), mechanical cranial proximal tibial angle (mCrPTA), mechanical caudal proximal tibial angle (mCdPTA), tibial plateau angle (TPA), distal tibial axis/proximal tibial axis angle (DPA). Some interesting findings are the similarity of values between Control and CCLR vs. CCLR + PL and PL groups in Na, Qa, aLDFA; between CCLR + PL and PL in FVA and a significantly lower age of dogs in CCLR + PL compared to CCLR group. Based on our results, we can conclude that YT with different clinical findings have differing bone morphology. Moreover, these findings may support PL as a predisposing factor for CCLR in small breeds. Measurements in which excellent inter- observer agreement was achieved may be used for surgical planning or for further discussions.

Abstract
Simple Summary Spontaneous cranial cruciate ligament rupture is one of the most frequently encountered joint diseases in dogs, often leading to disabling chronic progressive osteoarthritis. The cause of the progressive intra-articular collagen matrix degradation, leading to tear and mechanical failure, is unknown. A variety of contributing factors has been found, however, an initiating mediator triggering the collagen degrading cascade remains to be identified. Our finding of strong relaxin- and relaxin receptor expression on intra-articular target tissues, such as on ligament fibrocytes and synovial membranes, renders relaxin a candidate for pathogenetic involvement, for collagen lysis, and progressive ligament fiber disruption. If confirmed, this opens the way for medical treatment of the disease in its early stages. In addition, further proof of relaxin involvement in canine osteoarthritis and ligament rupture would constitute a useful spontaneous animal model for human disease. Abstract The etiology of spontaneous cranial cruciate ligament rupture in dogs is unknown despite being one of the most impacting orthopedic diseases in dogs. Numerous studies have contributed to the understanding of a multifactorial pathogenesis, this, however, without identifying a pivotal link to explain progressive collagen degeneration and osteoarthritic changes. In human medicine, recent reports have identified relaxin as a triggering factor in ligament ruptures in knee and metacarpal joints. We thus hypothesized that relaxin might also play a role in canine cruciate ligament rupture. Relaxin’s primarily known property is connective tissue remodeling through collagenolysis. We therefore investigated relaxin and its cognate receptors LGR7/LGR8 in 18 dogs with cranial cruciate ligament disease (CCLD) and compared them to a group of dogs with normal stifle joints. Applying immunohistochemistry (IHC), double immunofluorescence (dIF), and western blot analysis (WB), we found strong and significantly increased expression of both relaxin and its receptors in ruptured cruciate ligaments, and in synovial membranes. Pattern of immuno-staining on dIF strongly suggests relaxin binding to primed receptors and activation of signaling properties, which in turn may have affected collagen matrix metabolism. Thus, in canine cranial cruciate ligament disease, relaxin/receptor signaling may be a primary trigger for collagen fiber degradation and collagen lysis, eventually followed by ligament rupture.

Abstract
Simple Summary The cranial cruciate ligament rupture is characterized by chronic inflammation, osteoarthritis of the stifle joint, and extracellular matrix degeneration of the ligament itself in dogs. Early pre-clinical cranial cruciate ligament alteration cannot be detected by clinical examination or standard radiography. Therefore, we assessed the possible relationship of inflammatory markers in peripheral blood and synovial fluid of affected stifle joints in comparison to a control. We also evaluated components of the extracellular matrix of ruptured ligaments and finally compared the tibial plateau angle and the anatomical-mechanical angle between groups. Some of the assessed inflammatory markers were significantly increased in both the peripheral blood and synovial fluid compared with the control, as were collagens. The tibial plateau angle was not significantly different; however, the anatomical-mechanical angle significantly increased in the ruptured ligaments. Our results suggest a possible positive relationship between inflammatory markers of blood and synovial fluid in cranial cruciate ligament deficient stifles compared to the control. These findings may support both local and systemic inflammation process at the same time during osteoarthritis progression. Based on this, it would be interesting to investigate the predictive osteoarthritis pathway of inflammatory cytokines, matrix metalloproteinases, and their effect on the extracellular matrix components of the cranial cruciate ligament in future studies. Abstract The cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CrCLR) is characterized by chronic inflammation and osteoarthritis (OA) of the stifle joint and extracellular matrix (ECM) degeneration of the ligament itself in dogs. Generally, OA may arise from chronic low-grade systemic inflammation. We assessed the possible relationship of inflammatory markers in the peripheral blood (PB) and synovial fluid (SF) of affected stifle joints in comparison to a control. Moreover, no study has shown the possible association between PB and SF levels of inflammatory markers in CrCLR stifles of dogs in veterinary medicine yet. We also evaluated components of ECM of CrCLR and finally compared the tibial plateau angle (TPA) and the anatomical-mechanical angle (AMA) between groups. Samples from PB and SF were examined for mRNA expression of interleukins, TNF-α and INF-γ. ECM components—collagen 1A1 and 3A1 and elastin—were examined for mRNA expression from SF. The level of relative expression for IL-1β, IL-8 and IFN-γ was significantly increased in both PB and SF in CrCLR stifles as compared with the control. Collagens were also significantly increased in CrCLR stifles. TPA was not significantly different; however, the AMA angle significantly increased in the CrCLR group. Our results suggest a possible relationship between PB and SF levels of inflammatory markers in CrCLR stifles of dogs.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the effect of center of rotation of angulation (CORA)‐based leveling osteotomy (CBLO) and hamstring load on stifle stability following cranial cruciate ligament transection (CCLx) and medial meniscal release (MMR). Study design Ex vivo experimental study. Sample population Cadaver hind limb preparations (n = 7). Methods After instrumentation, constant quadriceps and gastrocnemius loads with an optional hamstring load in a 3:1:0.6 ratio were applied, and stifles were extended from fully flexed using an electrical motor during fluoroscopic recording. The recording process was repeated after each of CCLx, MMR and CBLO and the extracted landmark coordinates were used for calculation of cranial tibial translation (CTT) and patellar ligament angle (PTA). Results Mean initial tibial plateau angle was 28.1°: post‐CBLO the mean was 9.7°. Cranial tibial translation developed from 50° and 75° with CCLx and MMR respectively (p < .04, < .02) without hamstring loading. Hamstring loading mitigated CTT due to CCLx and delayed CTT until 120° for MMR (P < .02) in this model. CBLO prevented CTT, except at 140° without hamstring loading (P = .01). Similar results were seen for PTA, but CBLO curves were parallel to and lower than intact values at all tested angles (P < .04), consistent with induced effective joint flexion. Conclusion CBLO to a target tibial plateau angle of 10° largely eliminated CTT induced by CCLx and MMR. Hamstring loads of 20% quadriceps load improved stifle stability in this model. Impact Stifle stability following CBLO appears to be multifactorial and depends on meniscal integrity, joint angle, and hamstring strength.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine the effects of long-term and high-dose administration of glucocorticoids (GCs) on the histological and mechanical properties of the cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) in healthy beagle dogs. A synthetic corticosteroid at 2 mg/kg every 12 h was administered for 84 days in nine dogs (18 CrCLs) (GC group). Twenty CrCLs from 12 healthy male beagles were used as the normal control (control group). CrCLs were histologically examined (n = 12 in the GC group and n = 14 in the control group) using hematoxylin-eosin, Alcian-Blue, Elastica-Eosin stains, and immunohistological staining of type 1 collagen and elastin. An additional 12 CrCLs were mechanically tested (n = 6 in the GC and n = 6 in the control groups) to determine failure pattern, maximum tensile strength, maximum stress, elastic modulus, and stress and strain at the transition point. The histological examination revealed a significant increase in interfascicular area and fibrillar disorientation at the tibial attachment in both groups. The ratios of mucopolysaccharide-positive area and positive areas of elastic fibers were significantly higher in the control group than in the GC group. The biomechanical examination demonstrated significantly lower stress at the transition point in the GC group than in the control group. The present study results indicate that high-dose corticosteroids may affect metabolism, such as mucopolysaccharides and elastic fibers production, although the effect on type 1 collagen production is small. These changes of the extracellular matrix had a small effect on the strength of the ligament. This study suggested that the ligamentous changes associated with GC are different from the degeneration observed in spontaneous canine CrCL disease.

Abstract
Background Tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO) is currently one of the most common surgical procedures for the correction of the stifle joint with a ruptured cranial cruciate ligament. TPLO is based on the preoperative tibial plateau angle (TPA); therefore, it is essential to optimise the consistency and repeatability of TPA measurements. Objectives This study aims to compare computed tomography (CT) with conventional radiography in the preoperative planning of TPLO. Methods This prospective study included six dogs (12 hindlimbs) and 13 canine cadaveric hindlimbs. In the six beagle dogs, TPAs were measured by three radiologists using digital radiographic and CT images to evaluate the intra‐ and inter‐observer agreement. To evaluate the intra‐observer agreement of the TPA before and after surgery, and the intended angle of the postoperative TPA according to the preoperative planning method, 13 cadaveric hindlimbs were evaluated thrice at random by a single radiologist. Results The intra‐ and inter‐observer intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) of the CT method were higher than those of the radiographic method in normal beagle dogs. The intra‐observer ICC of the CT method before and after TPLO was generally higher than that of the radiographic method in the cadaver. However, no significant difference was noted in the evaluation of the intended postoperative TPA according to the preoperative planning method. Conclusions The intra‐ and inter‐observer ICCs allowed for easy identification of landmarks required to consistently determine the TPA in the preoperative planning of TPLO based on CT images.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the complications and the short-, medium-, and long-term outcomes following treatment of cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture in dogs using the lateral fabello-tibial suture technique. The patients were ten dogs of various breeds, 62.5 ± 18.8 months of age, weighing 30.2 ± 3.3 kg, with unilateral CCL rupture. At 2, 6, 12, 24, and 52 weeks after surgery, the dogs were re-evaluated with clinical examination, gait and pain analysis, and radiography. A major complication was identified in one dog (10%), requiring second surgery due to implant failure and destabilisation of stifle joint. Minor complications occurred in two dogs postoperatively (one late meniscal injury and one case of seroma formation). The short-term outcome at two and six weeks postoperatively was considered good in six dogs and satisfactory in four dogs, while the mid-term outcome (between 12 and 24 weeks) was good to excellent in eight dogs and satisfactory in two dogs. All ten dogs had a good to excellent outcome 52 weeks after surgery. The lateral suture technique is generally safe and given the major benefits, such as lower costs, lower technical difficulty, and minimal requirement for specialised equipment, will probably remain a popular and alternative method for treatment of CCL insufficiency in dogs with good degree of owner satisfaction.

Abstract
Objective To determine if a repeat intraarticular (IA) injection of a tin-117m colloid radiosynoviorthesis (RSO) agent can be safely given in the same joint 12 months after an initial injection for treatment of canine elbow osteoarthritis (OA), and to evaluate the pain reduction effect of the repeat injection. Methods and Materials Nine client owned dogs with grade 1 or 2 elbow OA were given an IA injection of tin-117m colloid in both elbows, one of which had been treated ≤12 months earlier with the same RSO device. Treatment safety was evaluated by joint fluid analysis at baseline (BL) and at 180 days after treatment, and by urinalysis, CBC, and serum chemistry analysis of diagnostic samples obtained at BL and 180 days. Radiographs, computed tomography, and MRI scans were obtained at BL and 180 days to determine if disease progression differed in elbows given one versus two injections. Clinical response to treatment was assessed subjectively by dog owner responses to the Canine Brief Pain Inventory (CBPI) survey at BL, 90 and 180 days, and objectively by investigator-conducted force plate (FP) analysis of dogs at BL, 90, and 180 days. Results All post-treatment urinalysis, CBC and clinical chemistry results were within normal ranges. Joint fluid analysis showed a significant (P=0.0411) reduction in the percentage of monocytes at 180 days, consistent with the tin-117m colloid mode of action of apoptosis of pro-inflammatory macrophages at the injection site. There was no significant difference in OA progression in elbows given one or two injections. The treatment success rate was 55.5% (5/9) on day 90 as determined either by CBPI responses or FP analysis, and 66.6% (6/9) on day 180 as determined by FP analysis. Conclusion The tin-117m colloid can be safely given as a repeat injection 12 months after an initial injection, and can potentially provide a durable therapeutic response in dogs with elbow OA.

Abstract
In the study, it was aimed to reveal the structure of the knee joint anatomically and morphometrically in the wild pig known as the ancestor of the domestic pig. In the study, the left and right knee joints of mature 10 wild boars were used as material. For this purpose, the materials were fixed with 10% formaldehyde solution. Macroanatomical and morphometrical examinations of bones, menisci and ligaments involved in joint formation were performed after fixation. Trochlea and condyles of femur were examined, and various measurements were made. Trochlear labia were found to be the same size, and the condyles did not show a significant difference in size. The shape of lateral condyle of the tibia was trapezoid, and the shape of medial condyle was triangular. Moreover, the lateral intercondylar tubercule was higher according to the medial one. The presence of a shallow groove on the tibial tuberosity was detected. It was found that the width difference between apex and base was more pronounced on the anterior and lateral surface of the patella. Joint surface of the fibula was found to be flat in all materials. The menisci were 'C' shape, but the medial meniscus is more convex than the lateral one. It was observed that the outer edges were thick, while the inner edges were thin. Ligaments of the knee joint were well developed. When the findings of the study were compared with the literature, domestication seemed to have no significant effect in terms of the morphologic properties of the knee joint of wild boar.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to clarify the histological effects of tibial plateau levelling osteotomy on cranial cruciate ligament degeneration induced by excessive tibial plateau angle. STUDY DESIGN Five female Beagles were used to bilaterally create excessive tibial plateau angle models surgically. A second tibial plateau levelling osteotomy was performed 11 months after the first surgery on the right stifle (tibial plateau levelling osteotomy group), and a sham operation that did not change the tibial plateau angle was performed on the left stifle (excessive tibial plateau angle group). At 6 months after the second surgery, the dogs were euthanatized. The cranial cruciate ligament was stained with haematoxylin-eosin to assess the cell density, Alcian-Blue to assess proteoglycans and Elastica-Eosin to assess elastic fibres, and immunohistochemically stained to assess type I (COL1) and type II collagen and SRY-type HMG box 9 (SOX9) expression. RESULTS In each group, the cranial cruciate ligament degeneration, especially on the tibial side, including the presence of Alcian-Blue- and Elastica-Eosin-positive regions, decreased in COL1-positive regions, and enhancement of SOX9 expression was observed. Besides, compared with the tibial plateau levelling osteotomy group, the excessive tibial plateau angle group showed increases in Alcian-Blue- and Elastica-Eosin-positive regions and a decrease in the COL1-positive regions. CONCLUSION The results suggested that excessive tibial plateau angle-induced cranial cruciate ligament degeneration can be suppressed by reducing the biomechanical load on the cranial cruciate ligament by performing tibial plateau levelling osteotomy.

Abstract
Cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) rupture is one of the most common orthopaedic conditions in veterinary medicine. CrCL plays a fundamental role in the stability and biomechanics of the femoral-tibio-patellar joint, and its incorrect functionality severely impacts on the quality of life of patients. In dogs, the structural weakening of this joint due to the progressive degeneration of the ligament is the most accredited etiopathogenetic hypothesis in relation to the dog signalment (breed, sex and age) and the stifle joint conformation. In humans, this injury is often traumatic and generally occurs during sporting activities. CrCL rupture can be managed conservatively or surgically, and decisions regarding treatment are due to numerous factors: the patient’s age and health, the degree of stifle instability, and cost. Physiotherapy protocols play an important role in rehabilitation, with similar goals in humans and dogs: pain management, physiological articular range of motion recovery, periarticular and core muscle strengthening, and proprioceptive deficit correction. Physiotherapy, even if often neglected in veterinary medicine, is mandatory for the recovery of the correct functionality of the injured limb and for the return to normal daily and sporting activities.

Abstract
Our objectives were to determine whether PLA implants can be used in TTA with successful results; secondly, to observe whether they provide a faster bone healing; finally, to determine whether weight or age influences bone healing scores. PLA cages were created with a 3D printer. TTA by MMT with PLA implants was performed in 24 patients. Follow-ups were carried out pre-surgical, at 1, 2, and 5 months and consisted of a radiographic study and a lameness assessment. A comparison was performed in terms of weight and age. Patients data, time between follow-up examinations, healing score, and lameness score were compared between patients using commercial software for statistically significant differences p < 0.05. Eighteen dogs finished the study. The ossification degrees presented statistically significant differences between each other. PLA implants maintained the advancement in 100% of cases. Comparing weight and age did not present any statistically significant differences between groups. Lameness presented statistically significant differences between follow-up examinations. Complications were observed in 20.8%. PLA implants for TTA provide good functional results, presenting an acceptable rate of complications. They provide a faster bone healing of the osteotomy gap, which was not affected by age or body weight, and have a clinical recovery time similar to metallic implants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO) is commonly used to manage cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) disease. The use of a spherical osteotomy blade (S-TPLO) enables correction of some tibial deformities with three rotational degrees of freedom. METHODS As a proof of concept, this retrospective study included 45 dogs with CrCL disease that were treated with an S-TPLO. The tibial plateau angle (TPA) was measured preoperatively, immediately after surgery (pTPA0 ) and on postoperative days 42 (pTPA42 ) and 56 (pTPA56 ). Lameness and osteotomy healing were assessed until 56 days postoperatively. RESULTS Thirty-one dogs had complete CrCL ruptures, and 14 dogs had partial ruptures. Thirty-one dogs had medial meniscal damage. The mean TPA, pTPA0 , pTPA42 and pTPA56 were 26.0°, 7.8°, 8.5° and 8.9°, respectively. The TPA from post-op to follow-up did not vary significantly (p > 1.365). Minor complications occurred in five dogs. The mean lameness score improved significantly from 3.2 preoperatively to 0.9 on day 56 (p < 0.0001). The mean healing score improved significantly from 1.6 on day 42 to 2.2 on day 56 (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION S-TPLO was successful in treating CrCL disease in stifle joints without tibial deformities, with results comparable to previously reported TPLO outcomes.

ANIMALS Four hundred and thirty-three dogs that underwent a TPLO (144 that developed a deep SSI and required implant removal, 289 that did not). STUDY DESIGN Retrospective case-control study. METHODS Records of dogs undergoing implant removal due to a deep SSI after TPLO between 2006 and 2018 at two referral centers were reviewed. These records were frequency-matched by date to dogs undergoing TPLO that did not require implant removal. Multivariable analyses tested associations between demographics and implant removal as well as timing of implant removal. RESULTS Deep SSI and implant removal occurred in 144 of 4813 (3.0%; 95% CI: 2.5, 3.5) dogs treated with TPLO. Implant removal was performed at a median of 279 days (range 49-2394 days) postoperatively. Male dogs (OR 1.8; 95% CI: 1.2, 2.7) and German Shepherd dogs (GSDs) (OR 7.4; 95% CI: 2.6, 20.5) were associated with plate removal. Earlier TPLO plate removal was associated with GSDs only (HR 2.4; 95% CI: 1.4, 4.1). CONCLUSION Implant removal due to SSI after TPLO was uncommon, although male dogs and GSDs seemed predisposed to this complication. SIGNIFICANCE These demographic risk factors can be used to educate owners regarding perioperative management.

Abstract
Lubricin is an important boundary lubricant and chondroprotective glycoprotein in synovial fluid. Both increased and decreased synovial fluid lubricin concentrations have been reported in experimental post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) animal models and in naturally occurring joint injuries in humans and animals, with no consensus about how lubricin is altered in different species or injury types. Increased synovial fluid lubricin has been observed following intra-articular fracture in humans and horses and in human late-stage osteoarthritis; however, it is unknown how synovial lubricin is affected by knee-destabilizing injuries in large animals. Spontaneous rupture of cranial cruciate ligament (RCCL), the anterior cruciate ligament equivalent in quadrupeds, is a common injury in dogs often accompanied by OA. Here, clinical records, radiographs, and synovial fluid samples from 30 dogs that sustained RCCL and 9 clinically healthy dogs were analyzed. Synovial fluid lubricin concentrations were nearly 16-fold greater in RCCL joints as compared to control joints, while IL-2, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α concentrations did not differ between groups. Synovial fluid lubricin concentrations were correlated with the presence of radiographic OA and were elevated in three animals sustaining RCCL injury prior to the radiographic manifestation of OA, indicating that lubricin may be a potential biomarker for early joint injury.

Abstract
Background Cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CrCLR) is the most common orthopaedic cause of lameness in the hind limb in dogs. Many surgical treatments have been described, but tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) is one of the most commonly used today. Since it was first described, TTA has evolved to reduce major complications and to arrest the progression of osteoarthrosis. The aim of this study was to assess a surgical technique called Porous TTA with flange prospectively. This study was performed in 61 dogs that underwent 65 Porous TTA with flange procedures, to validate it as an alternative CrCLR treatment. Complications and clinical outcomes (pain, lameness, weight bearing, flexion, extension, crepitation and atrophy) were reported over 3 months, i.e. at 3, 6 and 12 weeks postoperatively. Results The results showed a positive clinical outcome, a minor complication rate of 47.69% at the first review 3 weeks postoperatively, 10.77% at the second one (6 weeks after the surgery) and 4% at the third one (at 12 weeks). Major complications were observed only at the last review, with one case that had an infection requiring implant removal; this represented 1.5% of cases. Variables evaluated for a relationship with complication scores and improvement were body condition score, sex, age, breed, body weight, breed size, side of the affected limb, traumatic anamnesis and time of lameness before surgery. No relationship was detected. Conclusions Clinical outcomes and complications show that Porous TTA with flange is an efficient alternative for surgical treatment of CrCLR in dogs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to determine the changes in biomechanical characteristics following tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO) using simulated manual tests. STUDY DESIGN Twenty-one stifles from healthy Beagle dogs that had undergone TPLO or had not (control) were first tested in the intact form, and then the cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) was transected in each to provide four test situations: control-intact, control-CrCL-transected, TPLO-intact and TPLO-CrCL-transected. The stifles were then analysed using a robotic joint biomechanical testing system. The craniocaudal drawer, axial rotation and proximal compression tests were applied. RESULTS The craniocaudal displacement during the drawer test was not significantly different between the control-intact and TPLO-intact. However, the displacement was significantly greater in the TPLO-CrCL-transected than in the control-intact. In the axial rotation test, the internal-external (IE) rotation was significantly greater in the TPLO-intact than in the control-intact. Similarly, the IE rotation was significantly greater in the TPLO-CrCL-transected than in the control-CrCL-transected. In the proximal compression test, craniocaudal displacement was not significantly different among the control-intact, TPLO-intact and TPLO-CrCL-transected. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that TPLO influences the tension of the collateral ligaments and might generate laxity of the tibiofemoral joint. Instability after the osteotomy might be associated with the progression of osteoarthritis.

Abstract
Purpose The use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to treat canine osteoarthritis has gained support within the scientific community. PRP effects on pain control for degenerative joint disease induced by naturally occurring cranial cruciate ligament instability are limited, particularly in a cohort of dogs with chronic instability and osteoarthritis (>12 months), representing a commonly encountered clinical population that often defaults to medical management. The goal of this study was to assess the effects of a single intra-articular PRP injection into an effected stifle in this cohort, to assess response to treatment, quantitative kinetic data as it relates to percent body weight for peak vertical force (PVF) and vertical impulse (VI) were collected, and symmetry indices related to PVF were determined. Methods Twelve dogs with unilateral or bilateral osteoarthritis with ruptured, non-stabilized cranial cruciate ligaments over 12 months duration were identified. Unilateral injections of 2.5 mL of a PRP preparation into the most severely affected stifle based on kinetic analysis was performed. Repeat pressure-sensitive walkway analysis was conducted monthly for 3 months. Peak vertical force (PVF) and vertical impulse (VI) were normalized to body weight and identified in all four limbs. Previously published symmetry indices regarding PVF were calculated, comparing the treated limb with the contralateral limb, ipsilateral forelimb, and contralateral forelimb. Results After treatment, hind limb symmetry index (SI) regarding PVF showed improved symmetry, suggesting more weight placement at all-time points after injection of the most affected limb (p < 0.01). Further, PVF asymmetry indices assessing contralateral fore (CFL) and hind limb (CHL) as well as ipsilateral forelimb (IFL) revealing a significant decrease from baseline for CHL at week 4 (p = 0.02), but not weeks 8 and 12. The CFL showed decreased differences in symmetry from baseline at each time point (p = 0.03). There were no statistically significant changes in PVF or VI over time in treated dogs. Conclusion A single injection of PRP improved kinetics for minimally 4 weeks with some data suggesting an effect for up to 12 weeks. Therefore, PRP might be a viable therapeutic option for instability and inflammation associated with chronic osteoarthritis due to cranial cruciate ligament disease in the non-surgical patient.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective is to study the correlations between physical examination and stifle radiography findings and severity of arthroscopic cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) fibre damage in dogs with cruciate rupture (CR). DESIGN Design Prospective clinical study. METHODS Twenty-nine client-owned dogs with CR underwent physical examination, stifle radiography and arthroscopy, and the findings were recorded. Initial examination was repeated after sedation and after general anaesthesia. The Spearman rank correlations of examination variables with diagnostic imaging were examined. RESULTS Overall, cranial tibial translation assessed by the tibial compression test in extension showed correlation with arthroscopic CrCL fibre damage (P < 0.05). Correlations between severity of cranial drawer laxity and arthroscopic CrCL fibre damage were not significant. Under general anaesthesia, stifle laxity tests were positively correlated with lameness severity grade (SR ≥ 0.41, P < 0.05). Meniscal damage was correlated with pain on the internal rotation of the tibia (SR = 0.42, P < 0.05) and severity of radiographic osteophytosis (SR = 0.53, P = 0.01). CONCLUSION Detection and estimation of severity of cranial tibial translation enable the diagnosis of CR and also the inference of the severity of CrCL fibre rupture, particularly with the tibial compression test in extension. Severity of joint laxity is best assessed under general anaesthesia. Such knowledge should reduce the risk of misdiagnosis and may enhance early diagnosis and treatment of dogs with CR over time.

Abstract
Large animal (non-rodent mammal) models are commonly used in ACL research, but no species is currently considered the gold standard. Important considerations when selecting a large animal model include anatomical differences, the natural course of ACL pathology in that species, and biomechanical differences between humans and the chosen model. This article summarizes recent reports related to anatomy, pathology, and biomechanics of the ACL for large animal species (dog, goat, sheep, pig, and rabbit) commonly used in ACL research. Each species has unique features and benefits as well as potential drawbacks, which are highlighted in this review. This information may be useful in the selection process when designing future studies.

Abstract
This longitudinal prospective exploratory study used serial measurements in five dogs to evaluate safety and retention of a tin-117 m (117m Sn) colloid after intra-articular injection in normal elbow joints. Each dog was deemed healthy based on physical examination, laboratory results, and radiographic evaluation of both elbows. While anesthetized, each received an MRI of both elbows, followed by fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography scans of both elbow joints and associated lymph nodes. Joint fluid (0.5-1.0 mL) was withdrawn aseptically from the left elbow joint, followed by intra-articular injection of 117m Sn colloid (92.5 MBq; 1-1.5 ml). Post-injection assessments included blood counts, serum chemistry panels, urinalyses, radiographs, joint fluid analyses, MRI/positron emission tomography scans, scintigraphy, and biodistribution scans. On day 45-47, each dog was euthanized and a complete postmortem examination was performed. Tissue samples were submitted for histopathology and radioisotope retention studies. Left elbow joints were decalcified and sectioned for future autoradiography. Scintigraphy, 1 day after injection, indicated slight radioisotope escape from the joint to regional lymph nodes. Serial blood, urine, feces, and organ counts indicated >99.1% of the 117m Sn activity was retained in the joint for 45-47 days. Radiation output levels were below patient release levels the day following injection. Maximum standard uptake value for the injected joint decreased. Joint fluid cytology was unchanged. No dog exhibited lameness during the study. Absence of joint damage and lack of systemic effects after injection of the 117m Sn colloid in normal canine elbow joints indicate that this agent may be safely used for radiosynoviorthesis in dogs with osteoarthritis.

The density of cells with 3 nuclear phenotypes (fusiform, ovoid, and spheroid) was determined within the core region of each specimen. RESULTS Cells with fusiform nuclei were most dense in the MCL (median [range], 319 [118-538] cells/mm2 ) and LDET (331 [61-463]), whereas cells with ovoid nuclei were most dense in the CaCL (276 [123-368]) and CrCL (212 [165-420]). The spheroid nuclear phenotype had the lowest density in all structures (31 [5-61] in CaCL, 54 [5-90] in CrCL, 2 [0-14] in MCL, and 5 [0-80] in LDET); however, the CrCL contained a denser population of spheroid cells compared with MCL and LDET (P < .05). Total cell densities did not differ among the 4 structures (P > .05). CONCLUSION Phenotype density varied within the ligaments and tendon tested here. The cell population of CaCL and CrCL differed from that of dense collagenous tissues such as MCL and LDET. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The relatively higher density of spheroid phenotype in CrCL may reflect a distinctive native cellular population or a cellular transformation secondary to unique mechanical environment or hypoxia. This intrinsic cellular population may explain altered tissue properties prone to pathological rupture or poor healing potential of the canine CrCL.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis is a ubiquitous disease in dogs. The purpose of this retrospective study was to characterize the severity and distribution of osteoarthritis (OA) within the joint and to identify differences among dog breeds in the severity of OA in the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL)-deficient stifle joint. Radiographs of 240 stifles from 51 Boxers, 66 German Shepherds, 100 Labrador Retrievers, and 23 Siberian Huskies with confirmed CCL rupture were included. Radiographs of the stifle joint were evaluated and OA severity was graded at 33 sites within and around the joint, and patella alta was graded as present or absent for a potential total stifle OA score of 100. Osteophyte size was correlated to OA severity score. Total OA scores were calculated and compared within and between breeds globally as well as at each joint site. Dogs weighing >35 kg had a higher total OA score than those weighing <35 kg. Osteoarthritis scores were highest at the apical patella, proximolateral tibia, and sesamoid bones, corresponding to the proximal, lateral, and caudal aspects of the joint, respectively. No statistically significant differences were found among the mean OA scores of various stifle joint regions. Boxer dogs had a higher total OA score than other breeds. We concluded that dogs have a consistent distribution pattern of OA within the stifle joint after CCL injury. Radiographic OA is more severe in the proximal, lateral, and caudal aspects of the joint. Boxers had more severe OA than the other breeds evaluated in the study.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis is a common problem in daily veterinary practice with insufficient knowledge about disease mechanism. Because fibrosis is a part of the alteration in the effected joints, we investigated the transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1) as an important regulation molecule of tissue fibrosis. We chose Osteoarthritis following a cruciate ligament rupture (CLR) because it is a common model of osteoarthritis. A total of 13 healthy dogs and 38 dogs suffering from CLR were included in this prospective study. The concentration of TGF-β1 was measured in synovial fluid using the “Quantikine Human TGF-β1 Immunoassay” (Fa. R & D Systems, Minneapolis, USA). There was a significant difference in the TGF-β1 concentration of the synovial fluid of healthy compared to affected patients (p < 0.001). The synovial TGF-β1 concentration also correlated significantly (p = 0.0147) with the synovial viscosity of the affected patients. No significant correlations could be observed to duration of disease, severity of lameness and degree of joint swelling, but also to joint capsule sickness, osteophyte development and degeneration of joint cartilage. The results of our study show an increased TGF-β1 concentration in knees affected with osteoarthritis as consequence of CLR. So we can conclude that TGF-β1 takes part at the osteoarthritic remodelling process, but different phases of the remodelling process cannot be distinguished by the measurement of TGF-β1.

Abstract
Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is one of the most common orthopedic conditions in dogs. The pathogenesis of CCL rupture is not fully described and remains to be elucidated fully. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the etiology of these changes. The objective of this study was to investigate structural changes in the CCL in relation to the tibial plateau angle (TPA) and the intercondylar notch (ICN) width in dogs. Fifty-five skeletally mature dogs were included in this study. ICN width and TPA measurements were obtained from intact CCL stifles. Samples of the CCL, caudal cruciate ligament (CaCL), and femoral head ligament (FHL) were harvested and stained for routine histological and immunohistochemical analysis. Microscopic changes in the ligaments were observed and were found to correlate with the TPA and ICN width values. The degree of structural changes within the CCL was observed to correlate with an increasing TPA and a narrowing ICN width. Changes in the CCL are likely to be caused by excessive forces acting through the ligament in stifles with a high TPA. Chondroid metaplasia of the CCL is an adaptation to abnormal mechanics within the stifle joint caused by altered bone morphology.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to describe a modified surgical technique for tibial tuberosity advancement with cranial fixation (TTA CF) in dogs with cranial cruciate insufficiency and to report long term clinical outcomes and complications. TTA CF was performed with a novel titanium implant. A description of the specific implant with guide, drill and saw guide, instrumentation, and template are provided, along with clinical outcomes, complications, owners' evaluation, and a 1-year postoperation follow-up. Twenty two mixed breed dogs, with a median body weight of 23 kg (range, 11-45 kg) were included. The median age at surgery was 4 years (range, 1-8 years). Clinical bone healing was seen at a mean 10 weeks (range 6-14 weeks). The minor complication rate was 27% (n = 6). No major complication occurred, and no revision surgery was required. Twenty-one (95%) dogs had a good to excellent outcome 1 year after surgery. Currently there is no accepted best treatment of the canine cranial cruciate ligament deficient stifle. Most of TTA techniques are based on fixing the implant from the medial side of tibia. We report a modified TTA technique with cranial fixation of a titanium implant and suggest that the TTA CF surgical technique may be a feasible alternative to existing surgical procedures.

Abstract
This article presents a report of single-stage bilateral tibial tuberosity advancement for the treatment of cranial cruciate ligament rupture in an English bulldog. The reconstruction was performed by a new surgical technique involving tibial tuberosity advancement and fixation with two cranially placed lag screws. The patient was able to ambulate normally at a walk without lameness four days postoperatively. Except for bruising of the surgical site, no complications were observed during a six-month follow-up period.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify factors that restrict proximal tibial rotation during tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) and report on the outcome of concurrent fibular osteotomy (TPLO-FO). STUDY DESIGN Retrospective case-control study. ANIMALS Dogs undergoing TPLO-FO (n = 23) and dogs undergoing routine TPLO (n = 49). METHODS Medical records and radiographs of dogs that had undergone TPLO-FO were reviewed. Data that were collected included signalment, preoperative tibial plateau angle (TPA), mechanical medial proximal tibial angle (mMPTA), postoperative and recheck TPA and mMPTA, ratio of fibular width to tibial width (FW:TW), presence of tibiofibular synostosis, tibial osteotomy location, and use of additional implants. RESULTS The odds of exhibiting rotational constraints requiring FO during TPLO were 62-fold greater in dogs with tibiofibular synostosis than in dogs without synostosis. Dogs with FW:TW greater than 0.24 were 7.8-fold more likely to exhibit rotational constraints. After TPLO-FO, the postoperative increase in TPA was greater after single-plate fixation (mean, 5.4 ° ± 4.5 °) compared with fixation with 2 plates (mean, 1.4 ° ± 0.6 °). CONCLUSION Proximal tibiofibular synostosis and a relatively wide fibula restricted tibial plateau rotation. In these dogs, concurrent fibular osteotomy allowed adequate rotation. Adjunct plate fixation limited loss of rotation after TPLO-FO. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Successful TPLO relies on adequate rotation of the proximal tibial segment. Fibular osteotomy and adjunct plate fixation are recommended to achieve and maintain adequate rotation of the osteotomized tibia in dogs with rotational constraints.

Abstract
Background The presence of cranial tibial subluxation can aid in the detection of joint instability as a result of CrCL injury. Detection of cranial tibial subluxation has been described using the tibial compression test (TCT) and cranial drawer test (CDT); however, diagnosis of CrCL insufficiency by assessing cranial subluxation motion of the tibia is subjective and difficult to quantify accurately. The aim of this study was to investigate a measurement technique to assess the degree of cranial tibial displacement relative to the femoral condyles on mediolateral projection stifle radiographs at varying degrees of stifle flexion (90°, 110°, and 135°) in CrCL intact, partially, and completely transected conditions. Radiographic measurements included: CrCL length and intercondylar distance (ICD), defined as the distance between the tibial mechanical axis (TMA) and the femoral condylar axis (FCA). The influence of CrCL status, stifle flexion angle, and measurement type on measured distance was evaluated. The relationship between CrCL length and ICD measurement was also assessed. Results Complete transection of the CrCL resulted in significant cranial tibial displacement. Stifle flexion angle affected ICD, but not CrCL length. Normalized measured CrCL length and ICD were significantly different; however, no differences existed between the change in distance detected by CrCL length and ICD measurements as CrCL transection status changed. Correlation coefficients detected a significant positive correlation between measured CrCL and ICD. Conclusion The ICD measurement technique was able to quantify tibial displacement at various stifle flexion angles in the intact and completely transected CrCL conditions. The ICD measurement was more affected by stifle flexion angle than was the CrCL length. Abstract
The objective of this study was to describe the patient population of dogs with cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) deficiency that were prescribed a stifle orthosis. A total of 215 client-owned dogs with previously diagnosed CrCL deficiency were prescribed a stifle orthosis at a veterinary pain management and mobility clinic. Patient intake data collected included dog signalment, chief medical complaint, home environment and activity description, medical and surgical history, and diagnosing veterinarian. An orthopedic examination was conducted to assess pelvic limb function and determine pelvic limb morphologic measures. Spayed females (57.2%) were most common in our sample. Median age, body weight, and body condition score were 9.00 ± 3.23 years, 32.98 ± 13.37kg, and 6.00 ± 1.04, respectively. Most common breeds prescribed stifle orthoses included Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, and German Shepherd. Right and left limbs were equally affected, and 19.5% of dogs previously had stifle stabilization surgery. Primary reasons for seeking a stifle orthosis consultation were surgical concerns, advanced age, and surgery cost. Most common chief complaints included altered gait, decreased weight bearing, and pain following activity. Reduced stifle extension, increased cranial drawer score, and decreased 3-leg stance time characterized the CrCL-deficient stifle. Stifle orthosis represents an alternative approach to surgical stabilization and management of CrCL deficiency. CrCL-deficient dogs prescribed stifle orthoses were generally large breeds of advanced age with above ideal body condition score. Owners commonly sought a stifle orthosis for CrCL deficiency due to reservations regarding surgical management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) insufficiency is a degenerative condition that is a common cause of pelvic limb lameness and osteoarthritis in dogs. Surgical therapies developed to treat dogs with naturally occurring CrCL insufficiency aim to address the resultant instability, but the in-vivo alterations in stifle kinematics associated with CrCL insufficiency have not been accurately defined. The objective of this study was to quantify the 3-dimensional femorotibial joint kinematics of dogs with naturally occurring cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) insufficiency during ambulation. Eighteen client-owned dogs (20-40 kg) with natural unilateral complete CrCL rupture were included. Computed tomographic scans were used to create digital 3-dimensional models of the femur and tibia bilaterally for each dog. Lateral fluoroscopic images were obtained during treadmill walking and 3 complete gait cycles were analyzed. Stifle flexion/extension angle, craniocaudal translation, and internal/external rotation were calculated throughout the gait cycle using a previously described 3D-to-2D image registration process. Results were compared between the pre-operative CrCL-deficient and 6-month post-operative contralateral stifles (control). RESULTS CrCL-deficient stifles were maintained in greater flexion throughout the gait cycle. Cranial tibial subluxation was evident in CrCL-deficient stifles at all time points throughout the gait cycle [9.7 mm at mid-stance (P < 0.0001); 2.1 mm at mid-swing (P < 0.0017)], and the magnitude of cranial tibial subluxation was greater at mid-stance phase than at mid-swing phase (P < 0.0001). Greater internal tibial rotation was present in CrCL-deficient stifles during stance phase (P < 0.0022) but no difference in axial rotation was evident during swing phase. CONCLUSIONS Naturally occurring CrCL rupture causes profound craniocaudal translational and axial rotational instability, which is most pronounced during the stance phase of gait. Surgical stabilization techniques should aim to resolve both craniocaudal subluxation and axial rotational instability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence and risk factors for road traffic accidents (RTA) in dogs and describe the management and outcome of these dogs attending primary-care veterinary practices in the United Kingdom. DESIGN Retrospective cross-sectional study. SETTING Primary-care veterinary practices in the United Kingdom. ANIMALS The study population included 199,464 dogs attending 115 primary-care clinics across the United Kingdom. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Electronic patient records of dogs attending practices participating in the VetCompass Programme were assessed against selection criteria used to define RTA cases. Cases identified as RTAs were identified and manually verified to calculate prevalence. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression methods were used to evaluate associations between risk factors and RTA. The prevalence of RTA was 0.41%. Of the RTA cases, 615 (74.9%) were purebred, 322 (39.2%) were female, and 285 (54.8%) were insured. The median age at RTA was 2.5 years. After accounting for the effects of other factors, younger dogs had increased odds of an RTA event: dogs aged under 3 years showed 2.9 times the odds and dogs aged between 6-9 years showed 1.8 times the odds of an RTA event compared with dogs aged over 14 years. Males had 1.4 times the odds of an RTA event compared with females. Overall, 22.9% of cases died from a cause associated with RTA. Of dogs with information available, 34.0% underwent diagnostic imaging, 29.4% received intravenous fluid-therapy, 71.1% received pain relief, 46.0% were hospitalized, and 15.6% had surgery performed under general anesthetic. CONCLUSIONS This study identified important demographic factors associated with RTA in dogs, notably being young and male.
