Abstract
CONTEXT.— Immunohistochemistry has become a valuable ancillary tool for the accurate classification of pleuropulmonary and mediastinal neoplasms necessary for therapeutic decisions and predicting prognostic outcome. Diagnostic accuracy has significantly improved because of the continuous discoveries of tumor-associated biomarkers and the development of effective immunohistochemical panels. OBJECTIVE.— To increase the accuracy of diagnosis and classify pleuropulmonary neoplasms through immunohistochemistry. DATA SOURCES.— Literature review and the author's research data and personal practice experience. CONCLUSIONS.— This review article highlights that appropriately selecting immunohistochemical panels enables pathologists to effectively diagnose most primary pleuropulmonary neoplasms and differentiate primary lung tumors from a variety of metastatic tumors to the lung. Knowing the utilities and pitfalls of each tumor-associated biomarker is essential to avoid potential diagnostic errors.

Abstract
Malignant mesothelioma is a rare tumor arising from the mesothelial cells that line the pleura, pericardium, peritoneum, and tunica vaginalis. Imaging plays a primary role in the diagnosis, staging, and management of malignant mesothelioma. Multimodality imaging, including radiography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT), is used in a variety of scenarios, including diagnosis, guidance for tissue sampling, staging, and reassessment of disease after therapy. CT is the primary imaging modality used in staging. MRI has superior contrast resolution compared with CT and can add value in terms of determining surgical resectability in equivocal cases. MRI can further assess the degree of local invasion, particularly into the mediastinum, chest wall, and diaphragm, for malignant pleural and pericardial mesotheliomas. FDG PET/CT plays a role in the diagnosis and staging of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) and has been shown to be more accurate than CT, MRI, and PET alone in the staging of malignant pleural mesothelioma. PET/CT can also be used to target lesions for biopsy and to assess prognosis, treatment response, and tumor recurrence.

Abstract
Diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (DMPM) is an unusual and life-threatening locally invasive tumor. The morbidity and mortality of the disease are associated with progressive local effects in the abdominal cavity, such as abdominal distention, painful sensations, and early saturation with reduced oral intake, which eventually lead to intestinal obstruction and cachexia. Computed tomography (CT) has been widely used as a first-line diagnostic tool for DMPM. In addition, the most sensitive immunohistochemical markers of DMPM include WT 1, D2-40, and calmodulin. This paradigm has altered with the advancements in the immunohistochemical analysis of BRCA1-Associated Protein 1 (BAP1) the lack of BAP1 expression shows the diagnosis of malignancy. DMPM is resistant to conventional chemotherapies. Therefore, the gold standard for the treatment of DMPM is the combination of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). The overexpression of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT serine/threonine kinase 1 (AKT)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway drives the malignant phenotype of DMPM, thereby showing promising potential for the treatment of DMPM. The coordinated activities among multiple RTKs are directly involved in the biological processes of DMPM, suggesting that the combined inhibition of the PI3K and mTOR signaling pathways might be an effective measure. This treatment strategy can be easily implemented in clinical practice. However, the combined inhibition of ERBB1(HER1)/ERBB2 (HER2) and ERBB3 (HER3) requires further investigations. Thus, based on these, the discovery of novel targeted therapies might be crucial to improving the prognosis of DMPM patients.

Abstract
Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive tumor of the pleural cavity. Pathologically distinguishing MPM from other pleural lesions is often difficult. We searched for marker antigens to facilitate the pathological diagnosis of MPM and found useful markers for the pathological detection of malignant mesothelioma. Among them, the anti-mesothelioma monoclonal antibody SKM9-2, which was isolated as a clone binding to specimens of MPM (but not to specimens of lung adenocarcinoma) by immunohistochemical screening, showed higher specificity and sensitivity than traditional mesothelioma markers. SKM9-2 recognizes both sialylated O-glycans and peptide sequences in HEG1, and its glycan modifications are specific to mesothelioma. New effective treatments for MPM are needed because the prognosis of patients with MPM is usually poor. SKM9-2 can be used as a seed for next-generation antibody drugs with strong cytotoxic activities. In this review, we have summarized our research on antibody development for MPM diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
Malignant pericardial mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare tumour that arises from the mesothelial cells of the pericardium. No standard treatment has been established owing to a poor treatment response; therefore, MPM has a poor prognosis. We herein report a rare case of MPM in a 70-year-old man that was diagnosed immunohistopathologically using cell block sections of pericardial fluid and in which long-term survival for more than 3 years was achieved with only periodic pericardial drainage. Immunohistopathological staining investigations, especially BRCA1-associated protein 1 (BAP1) immunostaining using cell block sections of pericardial effusion, are effective in making a diagnosis of MPM. Well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma (WDPM) with BAP1 loss progresses to MPM in the long term, showing that BAP1 loss may induce phenotypical evolution of WDPM. BAP1 loss may also progress to malignant mesothelioma in situ and then to invasive mesothelioma. BAP1 immunohistochemistry should be considered for the early diagnosis of MPM.

Abstract
Mesothelioma has been reported frequently in large felids. These neoplasms present a diagnostic challenge given their highly variable morphology that mimics carcinomas or sarcomas at different locations. Our goal was to characterize mesotheliomas morphologically and immunohistochemically to determine if a panel of antibodies could be used to more accurately support the diagnosis of these neoplasms in large felids. Mesotheliomas from 6 large felids, including 4 clouded leopards, 1 Bengal tiger, and 1 cheetah, were immunohistochemically labeled for vimentin, E-cadherin, pancytokeratin, Wilms tumor 1 (WT1), MUC-1, and calretinin. The mesotheliomas of the 4 clouded leopards and the tiger were of the epithelial subtype; the mesothelioma from the cheetah was biphasic. All 6 mesotheliomas had strong immunohistochemical labeling for vimentin, E-cadherin, and pancytokeratin. All cases had cytoplasmic labeling for WT1, and 2 also had nuclear labeling. The 3 mesotheliomas with distinct papillary fronds were weakly positive for MUC-1. These and one other epithelial mesothelioma were also positive for calretinin. Our study demonstrates that the morphologic and immunohistochemical phenotypes of mesothelioma that have been identified in humans and domestic species can occur in large felids, and a panel of pancytokeratin, vimentin, WT1, and calretinin can be utilized to support the diagnosis of these neoplasms.

Abstract
Malignant mesothelioma is a locally aggressive malignancy most commonly arising from the pleural and/or peritoneal cavity. Distant cutaneous metastasis is extremely rare. Here, we describe two cases of mesothelioma metastatic to the head and neck skin. Case 1: A 64-year-old man diagnosed previously with extensive thoracic and abdominal mesothelioma, developed a rapidly growing right upper lip lesion, for which a wedge resection was performed. Case 2: A 77-year-old woman with a history of pleural mesothelioma developed a firm, mobile subcutaneous nodule on the right lateral forehead, clinically thought to represent either an epidermal inclusion cyst or a lipoma. A punch biopsy was performed. In both cases, histopathologic evaluation revealed dermal proliferation of epithelioid cells with moderate cytologic atypia and three mitotic figures per mm2 and two mitotic figures per mm2 for Cases 1 and 2, respectively. Immunohistochemical studies revealed the lesional cells to be positive for WT1, mesothelin, D2-40, CK5/6, while being negative for melanocytic and other keratinocytic markers, supporting a diagnosis of metastatic mesothelioma. Awareness of rare instances of cutaneous metastases from malignant mesothelioma is necessary to avoid possible misdiagnosis and ensure appropriate management.

Abstract
Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive tumor strictly connected to asbestos exposure. Prognosis is dismal as diagnosis commonly occurs in advanced stage. Radiological screenings have not proven to be effective and also pathological diagnosis may be challenging. In the era of precision oncology, validation of robust non-invasive biomarkers for screening of asbestos-exposed individuals, assessment of prognosis and prediction of response to treatments remains an important unmet clinical need. This review provides an overview on current understanding and possible applications of liquid biopsy in MPM, mostly focused on the utility as diagnostic and prognostic test.

Abstract
Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a rare neoplasm with poor prognosis that usually develops after exposure to asbestos, and is characterised by aggressive local invasion and metastatic spread. While metastasis to the oral cavity is very rare, a total of 23 cases of MM metastasising to the oral cavity were identifed. Among those, the tongue was the most common site of metastasis (39.1%), and frequently involved the epithelioid MM cell type. Recent studies have elucidated the mechanisms underlying the development of MM. Chronic inflammation has been implicated in promoting MM growth and was shown to play a key role by driving the release of high mobility group box protein 1 following asbestos deposition. Inherited heterozygous germline mutations in the deubiquitylase BRCA-associated protein 1 were shown to increase the incidence of MM in some families. Infection by the simian virus 40 was also found to be associated with the occurrence of MM. Moreover, the increasing incidence rates of MM, together with its propensity to metastasise to the oral cavity, indicate that clinicians and pathologists should be highly aware of this disease. Furthermore, identification of novel serum biomarkers would enable better screening and treatment of MM, and improve the survival outcomes.

Abstract
Mesothelioma is a malignancy of serosal membranes including the peritoneum, pleura, pericardium and the tunica vaginalis of the testes. Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a rare disease with a global incidence in countries like Italy of about 1.15 per 100,000 inhabitants. Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma (MPM) is the most common form of mesothelioma, accounting for approximately 80% of disease. Although rare in the global population, mesothelioma is linked to industrial pollutants and mineral fiber exposure, with approximately 80% of cases linked to asbestos. Due to the persistent asbestos exposure in many countries, a worldwide progressive increase in MPM incidence is expected for the current and coming years. The tumor grows in a loco-regional pattern, spreading from the parietal to the visceral pleura and invading the surrounding structures that induce the clinical picture of pleural effusion, pain and dyspnea. Distant spreading and metastasis are rarely observed, and most patients die from the burden of the primary tumor. Currently, there are no effective treatments for MPM, and the prognosis is invariably poor. Some studies average the prognosis to be roughly one-year after diagnosis. The uniquely poor mutational landscape which characterizes MPM appears to derive from a selective pressure operated by the environment; thus, inflammation and immune response emerge as key players in driving MPM progression and represent promising therapeutic targets. Here we recapitulate current knowledge on MPM with focus on the emerging network between genetic asset and inflammatory microenvironment which characterize the disease as amenable target for novel therapeutic approaches.

Abstract
Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a fatal tumor, and the absence of a specific diagnostic marker and/or a pathogenic molecule-targeting drug is a major issue for its pathological diagnosis and for targeting therapy. The molecular target of MM has not been elucidated because of unknown survival, death, and cytotoxic signals in MM. HEG homolog 1 (HEG1) is a mucin-like membrane protein that contains epidermal growth factor-like domains, and it plays an important role in cancers through aberrant signaling, including that during cell adhesion, as well as through protection from invasion of tumor cells. HEG1 expression supports the survival and proliferation of MM cells. In this study, functional analysis of HEG1 and microRNAs using MM cell lines (H226, MESO4, H2052) was performed. The MTS assay revealed that cell proliferation was significantly reduced upon transient transfection with microRNA-23b (miR-23b) inhibitor and/or HEG1 siRNA. The Annexin V assay revealed that apoptosis was induced upon suppression of miR-23b and/or HEG1. Western blotting showed that the autophagy-related protein LC3-II was induced upon suppression of miR-23b and/or HEG1. These results revealed that miR-23b contributes to HEG1-dependent cell proliferation through evasion of cytotoxicity induced by apoptosis and autophagy in MM cells. HEG1-dependent/mediated miR-23b signaling may therefore be a potential target for MM diagnosis and therapy.

Abstract
Recent findings suggest that S100A4, a protein involved in communication between stromal cells and cancer cells, could be more involved than previously expected in cancer invasiveness. To investigate its cumulative value in the multistep process of the pathogenesis of malignant mesothelioma (MM), SWATH-MS (sequential window acquisition of all theoretical fragmentation spectra), an advanced and robust technique of quantitative proteomics, was used to analyze a collection of 26 preneoplastic and neoplastic rat mesothelial cell lines and models of MM with increasing invasiveness. Secondly, proteomic and histological analyses were conducted on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded sections of liver metastases vs. primary tumor, and spleen from tumor-bearing rats vs. controls in the most invasive MM model. We found that S100A4, along with 12 other biomarkers, differentiated neoplastic from preneoplastic mesothelial cell lines, and invasive vs. non-invasive tumor cells in vitro, and MM tumors in vivo. Additionally, S100A4 was the only protein differentiating preneoplastic mesothelial cell lines with sarcomatoid vs. epithelioid morphology in relation to EMT (epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition). Finally, S100A4 was the most significantly increased biomarker in liver metastases vs. primary tumor, and in the spleen colonized by MM cells. Overall, we showed that S100A4 was the only protein that showed increased abundance in all situations, highlighting its crucial role in all stages of MM pathogenesis.

Abstract
Calretinin, a mesothelioma marker, is sometimes expressed in lung cancer, which may complicate the differential diagnosis of mesothelioma. Here, the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of calretinin-positive lung cancer were examined to reduce confusion with malignant mesothelioma. Calretinin expression in 307 consecutive cases of lung cancer was evaluated immunohistochemically. Survival was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test. Calretinin expression was identified in 67 (22%) tumors, including those with partial and weak expression [15% (37/250) of adenocarcinomas, 54% (25/46) of squamous cell carcinomas, 75% (3/4) of adenosquamous carcinomas, and 29% (2/7) of sarcomatoid carcinomas]. In calretinin-positive adenocarcinoma (n = 37), expression percentages of Wilms tumor-1, podoplanin, thyroid transcription factor-1, and claudin-4 were 6, 3, 52, 82%, respectively, whereas in calretinin-positive squamous cell carcinoma (n = 25) the percentages were 8, 12, 12, 68%, respectively, indicating that other mesothelial markers were only rarely expressed and that claudin-4 expression was common. Although not an independent marker, calretinin expression was associated with a poor prognosis for stage I tumors of adenocarcinoma (p < 0.001) and of all histological subtypes (p < 0.001). In conclusion, calretinin-positive lung tumors share characteristics with those of smokers and advanced stages and can be differentiated from mesothelioma with the use of other mesothelial and epithelial markers.

Abstract
Background Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare and aggressive cancer that develops in the pleural and outer layer of tissues surrounding the lungs. MPM is primarily caused by occupational exposure to asbestos and results in a poor prognosis. Effective therapeutics as well as early diagnostics for the MPM are still lacking. To identify potential diagnostic biomarkers for MPM, we performed bioinformatics analysis of public database. Methods Utilizing databases from Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia (CCLE) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), we identified several potential candidates that could act as MPM biomarkers. We carried out additional molecular analyses of these potential markers using MPM patient tissue samples via quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Results We identified Lysyl oxidase (LOX), Lysyl oxidase homologs 1&2 (LOXL1& LOXL2) Zinc Finger Protein, FOG Family Member 2 (ZFPM2) as potential diagnostic biomarkers for MPM. In this study, we found that the LOX family and ZFPM2 showed comparable diagnostic ability to Fibulin-3 or mesothelin (MSLN) and would be better potential biomarkers than Sulfatase 1 (SULF1), Thrombospondin 2 (THBS2) and Cadherin 11 (CDH11). Conclusions LOX family and ZPFM2 were identified as novel MPM diagnostic biomarkers which could strengthen MPM clinical diagnostic capabilities.

Abstract
Sarcomatoid mesothelioma is not very common, mesothelioma is directly attributable to occupational asbestos exposure, with 90% of cases showing a history of exposure. A 66-year-old male was admitted with an abdominal pain that persisted for 3 weeks. He had no abdominal mass. Computed tomography showed soft tissue thickening in perihepatic space and nodularities in omentum and peritoneum with ascites. There was no absolute diagnosis evidence in ascites analysis. Although the pathology of ascites was free for malignancy, the patient underwent omentum biopsy for definitive diagnosis. In laproscopic exploration, there was omental cake, peritoneal nodular seeding. It was suspected cancer carcinomatosis. Immunohistochemical findings suggested that it was sarcomatoid masothelioma. This is the rare case of a peritoneal sarcomatoid mesothelioma, without any exposure to asbestos.

Abstract
Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a rare tumor of serous surfaces that has a poor prognosis. Cancer is a multistage process by which cells undergo metabolic and behavioral changes that cause excessive and untimely proliferation. Asprosin (ASP) and meteorin-like (METRNL) are two peptides associated with glucose and energy metabolism. We used immunohistochemistry to investigate whether these peptides could be biomarkers for diagnosis and treatment of MM. We reviewed 30 cases of MM and 30 cases of reactive mesothelial hyperplasia (RMH); we used the cases with RMH as control group. The specimens were examined using immunohistochemical staining for ASP and METRNL. ASP and METRNL immunoreactivity was more prominent in the MM specimens than the RMH specimens. Therefore, ASP and METRNL potentially could be used as markers for differentiating MM from benign diseases.

Abstract
Although asbestos has been used throughout Africa in the past decades, no reports of asbestos-related malignant mesothelioma are available from sub-Saharan Africa, except from South Africa and Zimbabwe. We present a case of a 39-year-old man who died from a histologically proven malignant mesothelioma of the peritoneum in Lubumbashi, DR Congo. No occupational exposure to asbestos could be found in his history. In view of his young age, we speculated that he had been exposed to asbestos as a child, which was highly plausible because he had grown up in one of the numerous mining estates of the region. The houses of these estates were often built with asbestos-containing materials, notably roofs made of corrugated asbestos-cement. The possibility of past domestic or environmental exposure to asbestos was substantiated by the identification of chrysotile and crocidolite fibres in samples of asbestos-cement collected from the home where the patient had lived as a child. To our knowledge, this is the first report of malignant mesothelioma from a country in the Central African region. We expect that heightened awareness and improved diagnosis will lead to the detection of more asbestos-related diseases in Africa.

Abstract
Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a deadly cancer that is caused by asbestos exposure and that has limited treatment options. The current standard of MPM diagnosis requires the testing of multiple immunohistochemical (IHC) markers on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue to differentiate MPM from other lung malignancies. To date, no single biomarker exists for definitive diagnosis of MPM due to the lack of specificity and sensitivity; therefore, there is ongoing research and development in order to identify alternative biomarkers for this purpose. In this study, we utilized primary MPM cell lines and tested the expression of clinically used biomarker panels, including CK8/18, Calretinin, CK 5/6, CD141, HBME-1, WT-1, D2-40, EMA, CEA, TAG72, BG8, CD15, TTF-1, BAP1, and Ber-Ep4. The genomic alteration of CDNK2A and BAP1 is common in MPM and has potential diagnostic value. Changes in CDKN2A and BAP1 genomic expression were confirmed in MPM samples in the current study using Fluorescence In situ Hybridization (FISH) analysis or copy number variation (CNV) analysis with digital droplet PCR (ddPCR). To determine whether MPM tissue and cell lines were comparable in terms of molecular alterations, IHC marker expression was analyzed in both sample types. The percentage of MPM biomarker levels showed variation between original tissue and matched cells established in culture. Genomic deletions of BAP1 and CDKN2A, however, showed consistent levels between the two. The data from this study suggest that genomic deletion analysis may provide more accurate biomarker options for MPM diagnosis.

Abstract
A 12-year-old intact male Welsh Corgi was presented with enlargement of the right scrotum. Both testicles were surgically removed and histopathologically examined. On gross examination,
white nodules were found in the epididymis and ductus deferens. Histopathologically, the nodules developed continuously from the tunica vaginalis testis of the right scrotum and consisted of
spindle-shaped neoplastic cells that invaded the surrounding tissue. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were diffusely positive for vimentin, cytokeratin and Wilms tumor-1 (WT-1).
Based on these findings, the tumor was diagnosed as sarcomatoid mesothelioma. The dog presented with respiratory distress 122 days after surgery and clinical examination found multiple
metastatic lesions in the lung, abdominal lymph nodes and peritoneum. The dog died 144 days after surgery due to disease progression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malignant mesotheliomas are aggressive and rapidly fatal neoplasms arising from the mesothelial cells. The most common sites of origin are the pleural and peritoneal cavities; the pericardium and the tunica vaginalis are infrequently involved, and malignant mesothelioma in the spinal canal is extremely rare. Here we report a case of primary spinal malignant mesothelioma. We also report the results of a literature search conducted in PubMed with specific key terms, inclusion criteria, and exclusion criteria, with a comparison of elected case studies and case series, and statistical analysis as appropriate. CASE DESCRIPTION A 35-year-old man presented with a 3-month history of swelling and pain in the left lower extremity. Neurologic examination revealed a loss of sensation below the L5 dermatome. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a mass at the L4-5 level. A diagnosis of schwannoma was suspected, and surgical resection was performed. Histopathological findings were consistent with sarcomatoid malignant mesothelioma. Thoracic and whole-abdomen computed tomography yielded normal results. The patient refused adjuvant radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Positron emission tomography-computed tomography performed at 3 months postoperatively showed no abnormality. At 8 months postoperatively, the patient developed back pain and difficulty with defecation; MRI demonstrated tumor recurrence. During a second operation, invasion of the vertebra and cauda equina was noted. A subtotal resection was achieved, and the pain was partially alleviated. Two months later, the patient succumbed to a traffic accident. CONCLUSIONS Spinal malignant mesothelioma is an extremely rare but highly aggressive entity. Preoperative identification is challenging, and definitive diagnosis depends on histopathological evidence. Surgical resection can help relieve the symptoms, but the overall prognosis is poor.

Abstract
Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is an aggressive and invasive neoplasm primarily affecting the pleura, peritoneum and pericardium. While mesothelioma commonly metastasizes to visceral organs, it has rarely been documented to involve the skin and subcutaneous tissue. There is a paucity of reports of cutaneous metastatic mesothelioma, and histologic examination is often challenging because the tumor closely mimics other primary and metastatic neoplasms. We report a case of a 75-year-old man presenting with a firm, hard nodule on his upper back, which on initial histologic evaluation resembled metastatic adenocarcinoma. However, upon review of his medical history and immunohistochemical evaluation of the lesion, the diagnosis of epithelioid MM metastatic to the skin was rendered. The purpose of this case report and review of the literature is to summarize the most effective available immunostains to aid in the diagnosis of this challenging entity, highlight the histologic similarities between metastatic epithelioid MM and other primary and metastatic neoplasms of the skin, and provide prognostic information for these rare tumors.

Abstract
The absence of highly specific markers for malignant mesothelioma (MM) has served an obstacle for its diagnosis and development of molecular-targeting therapy against MM. Here, we show that a novel mucin-like membrane protein, sialylated protein HEG homolog 1 (HEG1), is a highly specific marker for MM. A monoclonal antibody against sialylated HEG1, SKM9-2, can detect even sarcomatoid and desmoplastic MM. The specificity and sensitivity of SKM9-2 to MM reached 99% and 92%, respectively; this antibody did not react with normal tissues. This accurate discrimination by SKM9-2 was due to the recognition of a sialylated O-linked glycan with HEG1 peptide. We also found that gene silencing of HEG1 significantly suppressed the survival and proliferation of mesothelioma cells; this result suggests that HEG1 may be a worthwhile target for function-inhibition drugs. Taken together, our results indicate that sialylated HEG1 may be useful as a diagnostic and therapeutic target for MM.

Abstract
Background Minimal change disease (MCD) and primary focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) are glomerular diseases characterized by nephrotic syndrome. Their diagnosis requires a renal biopsy, but it is an invasive procedure with potential complications. In a small biopsy sample, where only normal glomeruli are observed, FSGS cannot be differentiated from MCD. The correct diagnosis is crucial to an effective treatment, as MCD is normally responsive to steroid therapy, whereas FSGS is usually resistant. The purpose of our study was to discover and validate novel early urinary biomarkers capable to differentiate between MCD and FSGS. Methods Forty-nine patients biopsy-diagnosed of MCD and primary FSGS were randomly subdivided into a training set (10 MCD, 11 FSGS) and a validation set (14 MCD, 14 FSGS). The urinary proteome of the training set was analyzed by two-dimensional differential gel electrophoresis coupled with mass spectrometry. The proteins identified were quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in urine samples from the validation set. Results Urinary concentration of alpha-1 antitrypsin, transferrin, histatin-3 and 39S ribosomal protein L17 was decreased and calretinin was increased in FSGS compared to MCD. These proteins were used to build a decision tree capable to predict patient’s pathology. Conclusions This preliminary study suggests a group of urinary proteins as possible non-invasive biomarkers with potential value in the differential diagnosis of MCD and FSGS. These biomarkers would reduce the number of misdiagnoses, avoiding unnecessary or inadequate treatments. Abstract
BACKGROUND Malignant mesothelioma is a rare but aggressive tumor, with a high misdiagnosis rate and overall bleak prognosis. In 0.7% of all cases, the origin is the pericardium. METHODS The present study is a review of the literature published in recent decades focusing on the advances in clinical manifestations, radiological findings, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and treatment of malignant pericardial mesothelioma (MPM). RESULTS No clear relationship has been established between the etiologies and the development of MPM. Clinical symptoms and signs are nonspecific when present. The main presentations are chest pain and dyspnea. Imaging plays an important role in the detection, characterization, staging, and posttreatment follow-up. The definitive diagnosis is made on the basis of pathological findings. Chest radiography and echocardiography are common techniques used initially, but their roles are limited. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging have an advantage in depicting the thickened pericardium, mediastinal lymph node, tumor, and the extension of adjacent structures. Surgery is the most important treatment modality and remains palliative in most cases, while the roles of chemo- and radiotherapy are unsatisfactory. CONCLUSION Clinical trials of malignant pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma remain important for MPM management. Multimodality treatment of surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy is expected to have a role in the treatment of MPM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Knowledge of molecular marker (typically protein or mRNA) expression in neural systems can provide insight to the chemical blueprint of signal processing and transmission, assist in tracking developmental or pathological progressions, and yield key information regarding potential medicinal targets. These markers are particularly relevant in the mammalian brain in the light of its unsurpassed cellular diversity. Accordingly, molecular expression profiling is rapidly becoming a major approach to classify neuron types. Despite a profusion of research, however, the biological functions of molecular markers commonly used to distinguish neuron types remain incompletely understood. Furthermore, most molecular markers of mammalian neuron types are also present in other organs, therefore complicating considerations of their potential pharmacological interactions. OBJECTIVE Here, we survey 15 prominent neurochemical markers from five categories, namely membrane transporters, calcium-binding proteins, neuropeptides, receptors, and extracellular matrix proteins, explaining their relation and relevance to synaptic communication. METHOD For each marker, we summarize fundamental structural features, cellular functionality, distributions within and outside the brain, as well as known drug effectors and mechanisms of action. CONCLUSION This essential primer thus links together the cellular complexity of the brain, the chemical properties of key molecular players in neurotransmission, and possible biomedical opportunities.

Abstract
We present the case of a 67-year-old male who was found to have multiple enhancing pericardial masses on CT imaging for investigation of weight loss and was subsequently diagnosed with primary pericardial mesothelioma. Although rare, pericardial mesothelioma is the most common primary malignancy of the pericardium and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of pericardial effusion, pericardial thickening or discreet pericardial mass. It is important for radiologists to be aware of pericardial mesothelioma as its clinical presentation is non-specific and it may be incidentally noted on radiological studies for investigation of apparently non-related symptoms. The prognosis of primary pericardial mesothelioma is universally poor.

Abstract
Accurate pathologic diagnosis and reporting in malignant pleural mesothelioma are essential for clinical care, and cancer registration. Practical guidelines for pathologists are provided in publications and textbooks but it is unclear how these recommendations are applied in routine practice. We investigated the characteristics of pathology reports, and the extent to which they meet guideline standards. We reviewed 819 pathology reports relating to a first diagnosis of malignant pleural mesothelioma. Data sources were a regional section of the Italian network of the Mesothelioma Registry (2001-2014) and a pathology archive (1990-2000). We evaluated tumor characteristics, the diagnosis field including terminology and immunohistochemistry (IHC) workup, and report completeness (the proportion of items recorded). We investigated also two IHC panels identified by the most used markers in current practical guidelines, one best suited for epithelioid mesotheliomas (combinations of at least 2 positive and at least 2 negative mesothelioma markers) and the other best suited for sarcomatoid mesotheliomas (positive mesothelioma markers plus cytokeratins). Reports (753 histology, 66 cytology, IHC-confirmed 86%) were 74% complete and always narrative. Missing data were related to clinical history (76%), tumor laterality (61%), specimen size (38%), and histological subtype (23%). The proportion of cases with IHC was higher for epithelioid (90%) than sarcomatoid mesothelioma (87%). Compliance to IHC recommendations was higher for epithelioid (59%) than sarcomatoid mesothelioma (11%). The mean number of stains was significantly higher for sarcomatoid than epithelioid mesothelioma (p<0.000; Kruskal-Wallis test). Our findings show that although guidelines are designed to improve actual reporting practices, there is ample room for improvement in their application to standardize the diagnosis of mesothelioma. Synoptic pathology reporting needs to be implemented to better utilize pathology information.

Abstract
Malignant Mesothelioma is a highly aggressive cancer, which is difficult to diagnose and treat. Here we describe the molecular, cellular and morphological characterization of a syngeneic system consisting of murine AB1, AB12 and AB22 mesothelioma cells injected in immunocompetent BALB/c mice, which allows the study of the interplay of tumor cells with the immune system. Murine mesothelioma cells, like human ones, respond to exogenous High Mobility Group Box 1 protein, a Damage-Associated Molecular Pattern that acts as a chemoattractant for leukocytes and as a proinflammatory mediator. The tumors derived from AB cells are morphologically and histologically similar to human MM tumors, and respond to treatments used for MM patients. Our system largely recapitulates human mesothelioma, and we advocate its use for the study of MM development and treatment.

Abstract
Diffuse malignant peritoneal mesotheliomas in children are uncommon, aggressive tumors with a grave prognosis. We herein report the clinical, radiologic, and pathologic findings of a 16-year-old male. The adolescent presented with a history of abdominal pain, nausea and daily, nonbilious, nonbloody emesis for 3 weeks. Radiographic imaging suggested small bowel obstruction. The diagnostic work-up and differential diagnoses are discussed. Histologically, the tumor was composed of epithelioid cells with a papillary and glandular architectural pattern. A few glands appeared to produce mucinous material. Histochemistry revealed PAS diastase resistant mucin, an inconspicuous finding in diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. An extensive immunohistochemistry panel (calretinin, WT-1, D2-40, CK 7, CAM 5.2, CK 5/6, CEA, B72.3, CK 20, CD10, CD30, CD15, CD117, PLAP, S100, TFE3, and EMA) confirmed the diagnosis. Of special interest, BAP1 staining was cytoplasmic and consistent with 3p deletion detected by conventional cytogenetics. The ultrastructural analysis demonstrated long microvilli, desmosomes, and intercellular junctions which further supported the diagnosis.

Abstract
Deciduosis classically occurs in the context of known endometriosis in the pelvis, most commonly in the ovaries, but also in the peritoneum. However, ovarian deciduosis outside the context of endometriosis is rare and makes diagnosis difficult, especially as the sonographic appearance suggests a malignant process. We report a case of decidualized ovarian mass in a patient without prior history of endometriosis that mimicked an ovarian malignancy. MRI may be a useful imaging modality to monitor these lesions and guide management. Consultation with a multidisciplinary team accustomed to such conditions will help to tailor the management to each individual.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malignant mesothelioma is a rare, insidious, and aggressive tumor arising from the mesothelial surface of pleural and peritoneal cavities, the pericardium, or the tunica vaginalis, with an increasing incidence worldwide, high misdiagnosis rate, and overall negative prognosis. A total of 20% of all cases is peritoneum in origin. METHODS The present study is a review of literatures focusing on the advances in epidemiology, clinical presentations, radiological features, diagnosis, misdiagnosis, management, and prognostic factors of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) occurred in the past decades. RESULTS Asbestos, SV40, and radiation exposures have been demonstrated to be correlated with the pathogenesis of MPM. The main presentations are abdominal distension and pain. Computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron-emission tomography (PET) play an important role in the preoperative imaging and staging. Definitive diagnosis is made on the basis of immunohistochemistry. Prognostic factors have been identified and verified. Negative indicators include advanced age, male gender, poor performance status, non-epithelial histology, and absence of surgery. The management of MPM has evolved from single chemotherapy to multimodality treatment of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy. Promising results have been achieved after a combined treatment of CRS and HIPEC, with an elevated median survival time of 29.5-92 months and a 5-year survival rate of 39-63%. CONCLUSIONS CRS and HIPEC represent the standard treatment strategy for selected patients with MPM, and patients with unresectable tumors can benefit from the combined treatment of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy.

Abstract
Context
Immunohistochemistry has become an indispensable ancillary tool for the accurate classification of pleuropulmonary and mediastinal neoplasms necessary for therapeutic decisions and predicting prognostic outcome in the era of personalized medicine. Diagnostic accuracy has significantly improved because of the continuous discoveries of tumor-associated biomarkers and the development of effective immunohistochemical panels.
Objective
To increase the accuracy of diagnosis and classify pleuropulmonary neoplasms through immunohistochemistry.
Data Sources
Literature review, authors' research data, and personal practice experience.
Conclusions
This review article has shown that appropriately selecting immunohistochemical panels enables pathologists to effectively diagnose most primary pleuropulmonary neoplasms and differentiate primary lung tumors from a variety of metastatic tumors to the lung. The discovery of new mutation-specific antibodies identifying a subset of specific gene-arranged lung tumors provides a promising alternative and cost-effective approach to molecular testing. Knowing the utilities and pitfalls of each tumor-associated biomarker is essential to avoiding potential diagnostic errors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Biological effects of tailor-made multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) without functionalization were investigated in vivo in a two-year carcinogenicity study. In the past, intraperitoneal carcinogenicity studies in rats using biopersistent granular dusts had always been negative, whereas a number of such studies with different asbestos fibers had shown tumor induction. The aim of this study was to identify possible carcinogenic effects of MWCNTs. We compared induced tumors with asbestos-induced mesotheliomas and evaluated their relevance for humans by immunohistochemical methods. METHODS A total of 500 male Wistar rats (50 per group) were treated once by intraperitoneal injection with 10⁹ or 5 × 10⁹ WHO carbon nanotubes of one of four different MWCNTs suspended in artificial lung medium, which was also used as negative control. Amosite asbestos (10⁸ WHO fibers) served as positive control. Morbid rats were sacrificed and necropsy comprising all organs was performed. Histopathological classification of tumors and, additionally, immunohistochemistry were conducted for podoplanin, pan-cytokeratin, and vimentin to compare induced tumors with malignant mesotheliomas occurring in humans. RESULTS Treatments induced tumors in all dose groups, but incidences and times to tumor differed between groups. Most tumors were histologically and immunohistochemically classified as malignant mesotheliomas, revealing a predominantly superficial spread on the serosal surface of the abdominal cavity. Furthermore, most tumors showed invasion of peritoneal organs, especially the diaphragm. All tested MWCNT types caused mesotheliomas. We observed highest frequencies and earliest appearances after treatment with the rather straight MWCNT types A and B. In the MWCNT C groups, first appearances of morbid mesothelioma-bearing rats were only slightly later. Later during the two-year study, we found mesotheliomas also in rats treated with MWCNT D - the most curved type of nanotubes. Malignant mesotheliomas induced by intraperitoneal injection of different MWCNTs and of asbestos were histopathologically and immunohistochemically similar, also compared with mesotheliomas in man, suggesting similar pathogenesis. CONCLUSION We showed a carcinogenic effect for all tested MWCNTs. Besides aspect ratio, curvature seems to be an important parameter influencing the carcinogenicity of MWCNTs.

Abstract
The definitive diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma (MM) in effusion cytology is often avoided or reluctantly made by cytology alone. The most probable reason for this skepticism is the lack of expertise in cytology among many pathologists and clinicians. When an effusion specimen is composed of cells with unequivocal cytological features of malignancy that have the morphology and immunophenotype of mesothelial cells, the cytological diagnosis of MM is straightforward. However, in the daily routine difficult cases of atypical mesothelial cells are often encountered and additional methods are required to establish an accurate diagnosis. In contrast to reactive mesothelial cells cells of MMs often harbor chromosomal aberrations, most frequently a polysomy in combination with a 9p21 deletion. These chromosomal aberrations can easily be detected by multitarget fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH); therefore, FISH allows a reliable distinction between reactive mesothelial cells and MM cells. In order to be able to discriminate between MM and adenocarcinoma, an immunocytochemical panel consisting of different mesothelial and epithelial markers is very helpful. In most inconclusive cases of atypical mesothelial cells the combination of morphology, immunocytochemistry and FISH allows a better distinction between reactive mesothelial cells and MM in effusion cytology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adenocarcinoma can be challenging to distinguish from malignant mesothelioma in effusions, and this distinction often requires ancillary studies and clinical correlation. Immunohistochemistry for claudin-4, a tight-junction-associated protein, has recently been shown to distinguish adenocarcinoma from malignant mesothelioma, mostly in surgical specimens. Our aim was to validate and assess the immunoreactivity profile of claudin-4 in a large series of malignant effusions. METHODS We evaluated 159 malignant effusions (84 adenocarcinomas and 75 malignant mesotheliomas). Claudin-4 immunohistochemistry was performed on cell-block paraffin sections and scored for staining intensity, staining pattern (cytoplasmic versus membranous), and percentage of positive tumor cells. Appropriate positive and negative controls were used throughout. RESULTS All cases of mesothelioma were negative for claudin-4 (0 of 64). Eighty-three of 84 cases of adenocarcinoma were positive (99%); 1 case of serous carcinoma was negative. Most adenocarcinomas showed strong and diffuse membranous staining (71 of 84; 84%); 12 cases (14%) showed membranous staining of moderate intensity. The overall sensitivity for adenocarcinoma was 99% (83 of 84). CONCLUSIONS Claudin-4 immunohistochemistry effectively distinguishes adenocarcinoma from malignant mesothelioma with high sensitivity and specificity in the evaluation of malignant effusions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Engineered carbon nanotubes are currently used in many consumer and industrial products such as paints, sunscreens, cosmetics, toiletries, electronic processes and industrial lubricants. Carbon nanotubes are among the more widely used nanoparticles and come in two major commercial forms, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) and the more rigid, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). The low density and small size of these particles makes respiratory exposures likely. Many of the potential health hazards have not been investigated, including their potential for carcinogenicity. We, therefore, utilized a two stage initiation/promotion protocol to determine whether inhaled MWCNT act as a complete carcinogen and/or promote the growth of cells with existing DNA damage. Six week old, male, B6C3F1 mice received a single intraperitoneal (ip) injection of either the initiator methylcholanthrene(MCA, 10 μg/g BW, i.p.), or vehicle (corn oil). One week after i.p. injections, mice were exposed by inhalation to MWCNT (5 mg/m³, 5 hours/day, 5 days/week) or filtered air (controls) for a total of 15 days. At 17 months post-exposure, mice were euthanized and examined for lung tumor formation. RESULTS Twenty-three percent of the filtered air controls, 26.5% of the MWCNT-exposed, and 51.9% of the MCA-exposed mice, had lung bronchiolo-alveolar adenomas and lung adenocarcinomas. The average number of tumors per mouse was 0.25, 0.81 and 0.38 respectively. By contrast, 90.5% of the mice which received MCA followed by MWCNT had bronchiolo-alveolar adenomas and adenocarcinomas with an average of 2.9 tumors per mouse 17 months after exposure. Indeed, 62% of the mice exposed to MCA followed by MWCNT had bronchiolo-alveolar adenocarcinomas compared to 13% of the mice that received filtered air, 22% of the MCA-exposed, or 14% of the MWCNT-exposed. Mice with early morbidity resulting in euthanasia had the highest rate of metastatic disease. Three mice exposed to both MCA and MWCNT that were euthanized early had lung adenocarcinoma with evidence of metastasis (5.5%). Five mice (9%) exposed to MCA and MWCNT and 1 (1.6%) exposed to MCA developed serosal tumors morphologically consistent with sarcomatous mesotheliomas, whereas mice administered MWCNT or air alone did not develop similar neoplasms. CONCLUSIONS These data demonstrate that some MWCNT exposures promote the growth and neoplastic progression of initiated lung cells in B6C3F1 mice. In this study, the mouse MWCNT lung burden of 31.2 μg/mouse approximates feasible human occupational exposures. Therefore, the results of this study indicate that caution should be used to limit human exposures to MWCNT.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Calretinin and Wilms' tumor gene (WT1) are mesothelial markers routinely used to confirm the diagnosis of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). We investigated the prognostic value of calretinin and WT1 expression in predicting survival in a series of patients diagnosed with MPM in our institution. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty-two patients diagnosed of MPM were retrospectively reviewed. Calretinin and WT1 were stained for IHC analysis in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections and positivity was considered for tumors with >1 % of tumor cells stained. Survival data were calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression was used to evaluate the prognostic value of the variables. RESULTS Calretinin IHC expression was positive in 83.7 % of patients and WT1 in 78.1 %. A significant association of calretinin and WT1 expression with epithelial histology was detected (p = 0.030 and p = 0.010). We found a significant increase in OS in patients with epithelial subtype, PS1 and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) ≤5 (p < 0.05). In the IHC markers analysis, we found a significant increase in OS for patients with WT1 positive expression (16.4 vs. 2.3 m, p = 0.013), but not differences for calretinin expression (16.6 vs. 5.0 months, p = 0.37). In the multivariate analysis, epithelial histology and WT1 remained as significant prognostic factors for survival (p = 0.004 and p = 0.010, respectively). CONCLUSION In our series of 52 MPM patients, epithelial histology, PS, NLR and WT1 expression are significant prognostic factors for survival. We concluded that WT1, but not calretinin, is a useful prognostic factor in MPM. The role of WT1 assessment is worth of prospective validation in future studies on MPM.

Abstract
ERG transcription factor is constitutively expressed in endothelial cells. Because benign and malignant vascular endothelia retain the ERG expression, ERG is considered a useful marker for angiosarcomas and related tumors. ERG is also expressed in a subset of prostate carcinomas and Ewing sarcomas due to ERG-involved translocations; therefore, this marker is also of high interest in the study of these malignancies. In this study, we evaluated 109 epithelioid sarcomas for ERG expression, on the basis of an initial observation of an ERG-positive case. We also studied expression of other endothelial antigens in epithelioid sarcoma. ERG was expressed in 38% of epithelioid sarcomas (41/109), usually with a uniform nuclear staining, similar to that seen in angiosarcomas. However, all epithelioid sarcomas were negative for ERG gene rearrangement indicating that ERG expression is not likely related to ERG-involving translocations in epithelioid sarcoma. Other endothelial markers, CD31, claudin 5, and Prox1, were absent in epithelioid sarcomas. The only exception was a pulmonary metastasis of epithelioid sarcoma showing focal CD31 expression, which probably resulted from antigen adsorption onto tumor cell surfaces. However, podoplanin was commonly (7/9) expressed in epithelioid sarcoma; therefore, this marker is not useful in distinguishing epithelioid sarcoma from angiosarcoma. INI1/SMARCB1 gene product was absent in all epithelioid sarcomas (considered here a definitional feature) but was absent from only 1 epithelioid angiosarcoma, indicating its relative specificity for epithelioid sarcoma in this differential diagnostic setting. ERG expression is fairly common in epithelioid sarcoma and should be recognized as a diagnostic pitfall in the differential diagnosis of epithelioid sarcoma and epithelioid angiosarcoma. General lack of endothelial cell-specific markers in epithelioid sarcoma helps in this distinction.

Abstract
We compared claudin-4 with Ber-EP4 and carcinoembryonic antigen as markers to distinguish mesothelioma from lung adenocarcinoma, poorly differentiated lung squamous cell carcinoma, and serous adenocarcinoma of the uterus or ovary. All mesothelioma specimens were negative for claudin-4, but 3 of 18 specimens were focally positive for Ber-EP4. In contrast, lung adenocarcinoma including poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma was highly positive for claudin-4, but expression of Ber-EP4 and carcinoembryonic antigen varied widely. Claudin-4 in poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma had a lower positive expression rate than in adenocarcinoma. Granular claudin-4 immunoreactivity was conspicuous in poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma; this immunoreactive pattern was also observed in mesothelioma. Claudin-4 was thus considered very useful marker for distinguishing mesothelioma and adenocarcinoma, even if histological specimens are small, as in biopsies that contain limited numbers of tumor cells. However, it should be mentioned that claudin-4 has a limit in discrimination between squamous cell carcinoma from mesothelioma.

Abstract
Introduction: Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare neoplasm. Due to the limited understanding of its biology and behaviour, peritoneal mesothelioma poses a diagnostic and management challenge. The management of peritoneal mesothelioma has been controversial; systemic chemotherapy, palliative surgery and cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with intraoperative hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) have been described. Materials and Methods: This study shares our experience with cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC for 5 out of the 6 cases of peritoneal mesotheliomas treated surgically, at a single institution in Singapore over the past 2 years. Computed tomography (CT) scans, positron emission tomography (PET)-CT scans and tumour markers were performed preoperatively but were not conclusive for the disease. All 6 cases presented to the Department of Surgical Oncology at National Cancer Centre Singapore, were diagnosed by histology of intraoperative biopsies. The combination of aggressive cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC was performed in 5 patients, with abandonment of procedure in 1 with extensive disease, who was treated with systemic chemotherapy instead. Results: Median duration of surgery, median length of hospital stay, and median follow-up duration were 7.04 hours, 11 days, and 15 months respectively. One postoperative morbidity relating to chemical peritonitis required exploratory laparotomy with good outcome. There were no mortality. All patients are alive at the last follow-up with no evidence of recurrences at 4 to 31 months from the time of their surgery. Conclusion: Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare disease that requires early diagnosis and can be effectively treated by CRS and HIPEC in selected group of patients.

Abstract
Background Malignant mesothelioma is an aggressive tumour of serosal surfaces most commonly pleura. Characterised cell lines represent a valuable tool to study the biology of mesothelioma. The aim of this study was to develop and biologically characterise six malignant mesothelioma cell lines to evaluate their potential as models of human malignant mesothelioma. Methods Five lines were initiated from pleural biopsies, and one from pleural effusion of patients with histologically proven malignant mesothelioma. Mesothelial origin was assessed by standard morphology, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and immunocytochemistry. Growth characteristics were assayed using population doubling times. Spectral karyotyping was performed to assess chromosomal abnormalities. Authentication of donor specific derivation was undertaken by DNA fingerprinting using a panel of SNPs. Results Most of cell lines exhibited spindle cell shape, with some retaining stellate shapes. At passage 2 to 6 all lines stained positively for calretinin and cytokeratin 19, and demonstrated capacity for anchorage-independent growth. At passage 4 to 16, doubling times ranged from 30–72 hours, and on spectral karyotyping all lines exhibited numerical chromosomal abnormalities ranging from 41 to 113. Monosomy of chromosomes 8, 14, 22 or 17 was observed in three lines. One line displayed four different karyotypes at passage 8, but only one karyotype at passage 42, and another displayed polyploidy at passage 40 which was not present at early passages. At passages 5–17, TEM showed characteristic features of mesothelioma ultrastructure in all lines including microvilli and tight intercellular junctions. Conclusion These six cell lines exhibit varying cell morphology, a range of doubling times, and show diverse passage-dependent structural chromosomal changes observed in malignant tumours. However they retain characteristic immunocytochemical protein expression profiles of mesothelioma during maintenance in artificial culture systems. These characteristics support their potential as in vitro model systems for studying cellular, molecular and genetic aspects of mesothelioma.

Abstract
Distinguishing metastatic carcinoma cells from reactive mesothelial cells in effusion samples is often challenging based on morphology alone. Metastatic carcinoma cells in fluid samples may mimic reactive mesothelial cells due to overlapping cytological features. We report a case of a pleural effusion in a 51-year-old female patient with a medical history significant for bilateral ovarian tumors and peritoneal implants diagnosed as serous tumor of borderline malignant potential. The effusion was composed almost entirely of adenocarcinoma cells that morphologically mimicked reactive mesothelial cells. The diagnosis of metastatic adenocarcinoma was made after a wide immunostaining panel of antibodies. Recognizing metastatic adenocarcinoma cells in effusion samples can be challenging and an accurate diagnosis may have significant impact on clinical management as demonstrated by this case.
