Abstract
Obesity is a worldwide pandemic and major risk factor for the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). T2D requires lifelong medical support to limit complications and is defined by impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance (IR), and chronic low-level systemic inflammation initiating from adipose tissue. The current preventative strategies include a healthy diet, controlled physical activity, and medication targeting hyperglycemia, with underexplored underlying inflammation. Studies suggest a protective role for helminth infection in the prevention of T2D. The mechanisms may involve induction of modified type 2 and regulatory immune responses that suppress inflammation and promote insulin sensitivity. In this review, the roles of helminths in counteracting MetS, and prospects for harnessing these protective mechanisms for the development of novel anti-diabetes drugs are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The prevalence of obesity is increasing significantly worldwide, raising great concern among health professionals. This observational study evaluated the electromyographic activity and thickness of the masseter and temporalis muscles, in addition to the maximum molar bite force, in obese and eutrophic subjects. METHODS Sixty subjects were divided into three groups: I (7-12 years), II (13-20 years), III (21-40 years) and sex: with 10 men and 10 women for each group. Electromyographic recordings of the masticatory muscles were obtained during mandibular tasks. The masticatory muscles thicknesses were obtained at rest and during dental clenching. The maximum molar bite forces were measured on the right and left sides. The difference in outcome measures between the groups and sex was analyzed using Mann-Whitney U test (p < 0.05) and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). RESULTS Electromyographic activity in the masseter and temporal muscles consistently displayed lower levels in obese subjects of both sexes across all three age groups during mandibular tasks. Additionally, greater thickness of the masticatory muscles was observed in obese subjects of both sexes across all three age groups. Obese women in Group II displayed higher values of molar bite force, both on the right and left sides, compared to eutrophic women. On the other hand, women in Group III exhibited higher values of molar bite force on the right side in comparison to eutrophic women. CONCLUSIONS This study underscores the potential impact of obesity on the morphofunctional aspects of the stomatognathic system in subjects aged 7 to 40 years.

Abstract
PURPOSE Glycated albumin (GA) is a glycemic marker reflecting the average serum glucose of the previous 2 weeks. This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of GA as a glycemic index to complement glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in children and adolescents. METHODS Fifty-four children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus (DM) and 97 children and adolescents without DM (NDM) were enrolled. The correlation between mean blood glucose (MG) and GA compared to HbA1c was investigated in the DM group. The correlation between fasting glucose (FG) and GA compared to HbA1c was investigated in the NDM group. Factors affecting GA, HbA1c, and GA/HbA1c were analyzed. RESULTS In the DM group, positive correlations were observed between MG and GA (P=0.003), between MG and HbA1c (P=0.001), and between GA and HbA1c (P<0.001). The correlation coefficient between MG and GA did not differ from that between MG and HbA1c in the DM group (P=0.811). Among patients with DM, those whose standardized body mass index standard deviation score (BMI SDS) was ≥2 had a lower GA/HbA1c compared with those whose BMI SDS was <2 (P=0.001). In the NDM group, there were no significant correlations between FG and GA, between FG and HbA1c, or between GA and HbA1c. The NDM subjects whose BMI SDS was ≥2 had a lower GA/HbA1c than did the NDM subjects whose BMI SDS was <2 (P=0.003). CONCLUSION GA is comparable with HbA1c in reflecting glycemic control in children and adolescents with DM. GA is affected by obesity in children and adolescents with or without DM.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a spectrum of liver diseases characterized by excessive fat accumulation, is the leading cause of chronic liver disease. The global prevalence of NAFLD is increasing in both adults and children. In Korea, the prevalence of pediatric NAFLD increased from 8.2% in 2009 to 12.1% in 2018 according to a national surveillance study. For early screening of pediatric NAFLD, laboratory tests including aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase; biomarkers including hepatic steatosis index, triglyceride glucose index, and fibrosis-4 index; and imaging studies including ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging are required. Insulin resistance plays a major role in the pathogenesis of NAFLD, which promotes insulin resistance. Thus, the association between NAFLD and insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome has been reported in many studies. This review addresses issues related to the epidemiology and investigation of NAFLD as well as the association between NAFLD and insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome with focus on pediatric NAFLD.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to investigate the subsequent risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) in adults newly diagnosed with atopic dermatitis (AD). METHODS This propensity score-matching cohort study used data from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort (NHIS-NSC) 2.0 database in South Korea from 2002 to 2015. The adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using a Cox proportional hazards model, for the new onset of T2D (ICD-10 code, E11) in AD patients compared to the matched controls. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were also conducted. RESULTS Each of the 36,692 individuals in the AD group and matched control group was included in the analysis. The risk of T2D in the AD group was significantly higher than that of the matched controls in the adjusted model (adjusted HR 1.44; 95% CI 1.27-1.63, P <.001). The results of subgroup analysis by sex, age, and body mass index were consistent with the results of the primary analysis. Sensitivity analyses using different T2D and/or AD definitions also showed consistent results. CONCLUSIONS The significant risk of subsequent T2D in adult AD patients suggested the necessity for efforts to prevent T2D in AD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES An increase in obesity prevalence may lead to an increase in the HOMA-IR value. This study aimed to investigate changes in age- and sex-specific homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) values among South Korean adolescents, using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) IV, V, and VIII conducted between 2007-2010 and 2019-2020. SUBJECTS/METHODS Overall, 4621 adolescents aged 10-18 years were evaluated, including 3473 from the 2007-2010 dataset and 1148 from the 2019-2020 dataset. The mean HOMA-IR values and percentile curves were evaluated by age, sex, and weight status. RESULTS The mean HOMA-IR values peaked at puberty in both sexes and further increased during puberty in the 2019-2020 dataset (boys 5.21, 95% confidence interval [CI] 4.16-6.26; girls 5.21, 95% CI 3.09-7.33) compared with the 2007-2010 dataset (boys 3.25, 95% CI 3.04-3.47; girls 3.58, 95% CI 3.31-3.85). Both groups (with normal-weight and overweight/obesity) exhibited a peak HOMA-IR value during puberty in both sexes and both datasets, although the group with overweight/obesity had a higher and wider peak age range. While the mean HOMA-IR values did not change in adolescents with normal-weight, they increased during puberty and post-puberty in boys with overweight/obesity. CONCLUSIONS HOMA-IR values should be interpreted considering sex, weight status, and pubertal stages. In particular, during the pubertal period, insulin resistance (IR) can coexist not only due to weight-related factors but also as a result of the distinct hormonal changes characteristic of puberty. Over the 10-year period, the mean HOMA-IR values increased in the group with overweight/obesity during puberty and post-puberty, highlighting the need for active intervention to prevent metabolic complications in adolescents with overweight/obesity.

Abstract
Understanding the role of white adipose tissue (WAT) in the occurrence and progression of metabolic syndrome is of considerable interest; among the metabolic syndromes are obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Insulin resistance is a key factor in the development of T2D. When the target cells become resistant to insulin, the pancreas responds by producing more insulin to try to lower blood glucose. Over time, this can lead to a state of hyperinsulinemia (high levels of insulin in the blood), which can further exacerbate insulin resistance and contribute to the development of T2D. In order to understand the difference between healthy and unhealthy obese individuals, we have used published transcriptomic profiling to compare differences between the WAT obtained from obese diabetics and subjects who are obese with normal glucose tolerance and insulin resistance. The identification of aberrantly expressed messenger RNA (mRNA) and the resulting molecular interactions and signaling networks is essential for a better understanding of the progression from normal glucose-tolerant obese individuals to obese diabetics. Computational analyses using Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) identified multiple activated signaling networks in obesity progression from insulin-resistant and normal glucose-tolerant (IR-NGT) individuals to those with T2D. The pathways affected are: Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF), Extracellular signal-Regulated protein Kinase 1/2 ERK1/2, Interleukin 1 A (IL1A), Protein kinase C (Pkcs), Convertase C5, Vascular endothelial growth factor (Vegf), REL-associated protein (RELA), Interleukin1/1 B (IL1/1B), Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells (TREM1) and Nuclear factor KB1 (NFKB1) networks, while functional annotation highlighted Liver X Receptor (LXR) activation, phagosome formation, tumor microenvironment pathway, LPS/IL-1 mediated inhibition of RXR function, TREM1 signaling and IL-6 signaling. Together, by conducting a thorough bioinformatics study of protein-coding RNAs, prospective targets could be exploited to clarify the molecular pathways underlying the development of obesity-related type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
Adipose tissue (AT) inflammation is strongly associated with obesity-induced insulin resistance. When subjected to metabolic stress, adipocytes become inflamed and secrete a plethora of cytokines and chemokines, which recruit circulating immune cells to AT. Although sirtuin 6 (Sirt6) is known to control genomic stabilization, aging, and cellular metabolism, it is now understood to also play a pivotal role in the regulation of AT inflammation. Sirt6 protein levels are reduced in the AT of obese humans and animals and increased by weight loss. In this review, we summarize the potential mechanism of AT inflammation caused by impaired action of Sirt6 from the immune cells' point of view. We first describe the properties and functions of immune cells in obese AT, with an emphasis on discrete macrophage subpopulations which are central to AT inflammation. We then highlight data that links Sirt6 to functional phenotypes of AT inflammation. Importantly, we discuss in detail the effects of Sirt6 deficiency in adipocytes, macrophages, and eosinophils on insulin resistance or AT browning. In our closing perspectives, we discuss emerging issues in this field that require further investigation.

Abstract
Although obesity with its comorbidities is linked with higher cancer risk, the data on genome stability in the obese/severely obese are scarce. This is the first study with three DNA damage assessment assays (Fpg-modified and alkaline comet assays and micronucleus cytome assay) performed on a severely obese population (n = 53) where the results were compared with daily intake of food groups, nutrient intake, dietary inflammatory index (DII), and anthropometric and biochemical parameters usually measured in obese individuals. Results demonstrated the association between DNA damage levels and a decrease in cell proliferation with anthropometric measurements and the severity of obese status, together with elevated levels of urates, inorganic phosphates, chlorides, and hs troponin I levels. DII was connected with oxidative DNA damage, while BMI and basal metabolic rate (BMR) were associated with a decrease in cell proliferation and DNA damage creation. Measured daily BMR and calculated daily energy intake from the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) demonstrated no significant difference (1792.80 vs. 1869.86 kcal day-1 mean values). Groups with higher DNA damage than expected (tail intensity in comet assay >9% and >12.4%, micronucleus frequency >13), consumed daily, weekly, and monthly more often some type of food groups, but differences did not show a clear influence on the elevated DNA damage levels. Combination of all three DNA damage assays demonstrated that some type of damage can start earlier in the obese individual lifespan, such as nuclear buds and nucleoplasmic bridges, then comes decrease in cell proliferation and then elevated micronucleus frequencies, and that primary DNA damage is not maybe crucial in the overweight, but in severely obese. Biochemically changed parameters pointed out that obesity can have an impact on changes in blood cell counts and division and also on genomic instability. Assays were able to demonstrate groups of sensitive individuals that should be further monitored for genomic instability and cancer prevention, especially when obesity is already connected with comorbidities, 13 different cancers, and a higher mortality risk with 7-10 disease-free years loss. In the future, both DNA damage and biochemical parameters should be combined with anthropometric ones for further obese monitoring, better insight into biological changes in the severely obese, and a more individual approach in therapy and treatment. Patients should also get a proper education about the foodstuff with pro- and anti-inflammatory effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of obesity, as well as obesity-induced chronic inflammatory diseases, is increasing worldwide. Chronic inflammation is related to the complex process of angiogenesis, and we found that adipose-derived stem cells from obese subjects (obADSCs) had proangiogenic features, including higher expression levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), Notch ligands and receptors, and proangiogenic cytokines, than those from control subjects. We hypothesized that IL-6 and Notch signaling pathways are essential for regulating the proangiogenic characteristics of obADSCs. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate whether the inflammatory cytokine interleukin 6 (IL-6) promotes the proangiogenic capacity of adipose stem cells in obese subjects via the IL-6 signaling pathway. METHODS We compared the phenotype analysis as well as cell doubling time, proliferation, migration, differentiation, and proangiogenic properties of ADSCs in vitro. Moreover, we used small interfering RNAs to inhibit the gene and protein expression of IL-6. RESULTS We found that ADSCs isolated from control individuals (chADSCs) and obADSCs had similar phenotypes and growth characteristics, and chADSCs had a stronger differentiation ability than obADSCs. However, obADSCs were more potent in promoting EA.hy926 cell migration and tube formation than chADSCs in vitro. We confirmed that IL-6 siRNA significantly reduced the transcriptional level of IL-6 in obADSCs, thereby reducing the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)- A, VEGF receptor 2, transforming growth factor β, and Notch ligands and receptors in obADSCs. CONCLUSION The finding suggests that inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) promotes the proangiogenic ability of obADSCs via the IL-6 signaling pathway.

Abstract
AbstractBackgroundObesity increases the chance of developing insulin resistance. Numerous inflammatory markers have been linked to an increased risk of insulin resistance in obese individuals. Therefore, we performed a bibliometric analysis to determine global research activity and current trends in the field of obesity and insulin resistance.MethodsScopus was used between 2002 and 2021 to retrieve publications related to terms related to obesity and insulin resistance. Data were exported to Microsoft Excel. Additionally, we use VOSviewer software to create visualization maps that describe international collaborations and research hotspots.ResultsWe identified 6626 publications, including 5754 journal articles, 498 review articles, and 109 letters to the editor. The most productive countries were the United States (n = 995, 30.11%), followed by China (n = 650, 9.81%), Italy (n = 412, 6.22%) and Spain (n = 386, 5.83%). Previously to 2012, this field was mainly focused on ‘adipocyte dysfunctions that link obesity with insulin resistance”; and ‘relationship between obesity, insulin resistance, and risk of cardiovascular disease’. ‘Supplements improve insulin sensitivity‘, and ‘obesity-induced inflammation and insulin resistance’ were found more recently (after 2014), indicating that research in this field has acquired significant interest and emphasis in recent years.ConclusionsThis is the first bibliometric study to focus on publications related to insulin resistance and obesity at the global level. Our reporting of quantifiable knowledge in this field may be useful in providing evidence and direction for future research, clinical practice, and educational initiatives.

Abstract
PURPOSE The prevalence of adolescents with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has rapidly increased in Korea over the past few decades with the increase in the number of obese adolescents. The single point insulin sensitivity estimator (SPISE) was recently introduced as a surrogate marker for insulin sensitivity to predict T2DM in adults. We aimed to determine risk factors for T2DM in obese adolescents, including SPISE. METHODS This retrospective study included 104 adolescents diagnosed with T2DM at Korea University Hospital between January 2010 and December 2020. We compared clinical and biochemical parameters and the SPISE of normoglycemic overweight and obese individuals with those of prediabetic and diabetic adolescents to determine risk factors for T2DM. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed with the Youden index to determine the cutoff point of SPISE. RESULTS Frequency of fatty liver and family history of T2DM were significantly higher and SPISE level was significantly lower in patients with T2DM than in normoglycemic overweight/obese and prediabetic adolescents (p<0.01). A family history of T2DM, fatty liver, and SPISE value below the cutoff point (4.49) were identified as significant risk factors for T2DM in multiple logistic regression analysis after controlling for age, sex, and body mass index standard deviation score (p<0.01). CONCLUSION Family history of T2DM, fatty liver, and low SPISE (<4.49) are risk factors that can independently affect the occurrence of T2DM in obese adolescents. Among these risk factors, SPISE is a promising marker for predicting adolescent T2DM; careful monitoring of these individuals is needed to prevent progression to T2DM.

Abstract
PURPOSE Lockdown measure for limiting coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) spread cause an aggravation of the childhood obesity epidemic through lifestyle changes. The aim is to investigate how social restriction might have changed obesity prevalence and lifestyle patterns in Korean adolescents. We also evaluate the most fragile group and most influencing lifestyle parameters on obesity prevalence. METHODS To assess the change in weight status and lifestyle, we compared the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey data 2019 (pre-COVID-19, n=57,303) and 2020 (post-COVID-19, n=54,948). Participants from middle schools and high schools, aged 12 to 18 years, voluntarily reported their weight status and lifestyles. RESULTS The prevalence of obesity of the total subjects was 11.0% in 2019 and 12.1% in 2020. This prevalence difference varied by sex (males 1.8%, females 0.3%, p<0.001), age group (12-15 year 1.6%, 16-18 year 0.4%, p<0.001), and socioeconomic status. Male aged 12-15 years showed highest increase from 12.5% to 15.2%. Physical activities, fruit intake, consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, and stress showed all decrease. Only, nonstudy sedentary time marked increased from 3.3±2.3 hr/day to 4.3±2.8 hr/day. Both moderate-intensity and vigorous-intensity physical activity marked decreased especially in male aged 12-15 years, while increased in female aged 16-18 years. CONCLUSION Korean adolescents showed increasing obesity prevalence after COVID-19 lockdown, with males aged 12-15 years mainly affected, mainly due to a reduced physical activity and increased sedentary time.

Abstract
Background: Resveratrol is a polyphenol chemical that naturally occurs in many plant-based dietary products, most notably, red wine. Discovered in 1939, widespread interest in the potential health benefits of resveratrol emerged in the 1970s in response to epidemiological data on the cardioprotective effects of wine. Objective: To explore the background of resveratrol (including its origins, stability, and metabolism), the metabolic effects of resveratrol and its mechanisms of action, and a potential future role of dietary resveratrol in the lifestyle management of obesity. Data sources: We performed a narrative review, based on relevant articles written in English from a Pubmed search, using the following search terms: “resveratrol”, “obesity”, “Diabetes Mellitus”, and “insulin sensitivity”. Results: Following its ingestion, resveratrol undergoes extensive metabolism. This includes conjugation (with sulfate and glucuronate) within enterocytes, hydrolyzation and reduction within the gut through the action of the microbiota (with the formation of metabolites such as dihydroresveratrol), and enterohepatic circulation via the bile. Ex vivo studies on adipose tissue reveal that resveratrol inhibits adipogenesis and prevents the accumulation of triglycerides through effects on the expression of Peroxisome Proliferator-activated Receptor γ (PPARγ) and sirtuin 1, respectively. Furthermore, resveratrol induces anti-inflammatory effects, supported by data from animal-based studies. Limited data from human-based studies reveal that resveratrol improves insulin sensitivity and fasting glucose levels in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and may improve inflammatory status in human obesity. Although numerous mechanisms may underlie the metabolic benefits of resveratrol, evidence supports a role in its interaction with the gut microbiota and modulation of protein targets, including sirtuins and proteins related to nitric oxide, insulin, and nuclear hormone receptors (such as PPARγ). Conclusions: Despite much interest, there remain important unanswered questions regarding its optimal dosage (and how this may differ between and within individuals), and possible benefits within the general population, including the potential for weight-loss and improved metabolic function. Future studies should properly address these important questions before we can advocate the widespread adoption of dietary resveratrol supplementation.

Abstract
Background: It has been demonstrated that 12/15-lipoxygenase (LO) contributes to insulin resistance by promoting beta cells’ exposure to inflammation. We investigate the mechanism by which 12/15-LO regulates the expression of inflammatory factors in obesity-related glomerular disease (ORG). Methods: Glomerular mesangial cells were treated with metabolite of 12/15-LO, and the expression of inflammatory factors was measured. Cell histones methylation in 12/15-LO related metabolic memory process were evaluated by chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays. Wild-type (WT) and 12/15-LO knockout mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) to induce ORG. Results: 12(S)-HETE increased TNF-α, MCP-1, and IL-6 mRNA expression. Inhibition of 12/15-LO reduced the expression of inflammatory factors stimulated by PA or TNF-α. ChIP assays showed that 12(S)-HETE increased H3K4me modification in the TNF-α, IL-6, and MCP-1 gene promoters, and decreased H3K9me3 modification in the MCP-1 and IL-6 gene promoter. Urinary albumin excretion was greater in HFD-fed than in standard fat diet-fed mice, but both urinary protein and microalbumin amounts were lower in HFD-fed 12/15-LO knockout than in WT mice. The levels of TNF-α, IL-6, and MCP-1 in serum and renal cortex were higher in WT than in 12/15-LO knockout mice. Conclusions: 12/15-LO may regulate the expression of inflammatory factors in ORG by methylation of histones in the promoter regions of genes encoding inflammatory factors, sustaining the inflammatory phenotype of ORG.

Abstract
We conducted this study to investigate the associations between hematological parameters and obesity in children and adolescents. The levels of hematological parameters (including white blood cells [WBCs], red blood cells [RBCs], hemoglobin [Hb], hematocrit [Hct], and platelets) of 7997 participants (4259 boys and 3738 girls) aged 10–18 years were recorded. The parameters were compared among participants with normal weight, overweight, and obesity. Significantly higher mean levels of WBCs (7.16 vs. 6.16 × 103/mm3, p < 0.001), RBCs (4.90 vs. 4.82 × 106/mm3, p < 0.001), Hb (14.07 vs. 13.99 g/dL, p < 0.05), Hct (42.31 vs. 41.91%, p < 0.001), and platelets (311.87 vs. 282.66 × 103/mm3, p < 0.001) were found in the obese than normal weight group, respectively, after adjusting for body mass index (BMI) and sex. BMI SDS had significant positive associations with the levels of WBCs (β = 0.275, p < 0.001), RBCs (β = 0.028, p < 0.001), Hb (β = 0.034, p < 0.001), Hct (β = 0.152, p < 0.001), and platelets (β = 8.372, p < 0.001) after adjusting for age, sex, and socioeconomic factors in a multiple linear regression analysis. A higher BMI was associated with elevated WBC, RBC, Hb, Hct, and platelet counts in children and adolescents. Because higher levels of hematological parameters are potential risk factors for obesity-related diseases, hematological parameters should be evaluated in obese children and adolescents.

Abstract
The adipokine adiponectin improves insulin sensitivity. Functional signal transduction of adiponectin requires at least one of the receptors AdipoR1 or AdipoR2, but additionally the glycosyl phosphatidylinositol-anchored molecule, T-cadherin. Overnutrition causes a reduction in adiponectin synthesis and an increase in the circulating levels of the enzyme glycosyl phosphatidylinositol-phospholipase D (GPI-PLD). GPI-PLD promotes the hydrolysis of T-cadherin. The functional consequence of T-cadherin hydrolysis is a reduction in adiponectin sequestration by responsive tissues, an augmentation of adiponectin levels in circulation and a (further) reduction in signal transduction. This process creates the paradoxical situation that adiponectin levels are augmented, whereas the adiponectin signal transduction and insulin sensitivity remain strongly impaired. Although both hypoadiponectinemia and hyperadiponectinemia reflect a situation of insulin resistance, the treatments are likely to be different.

Abstract
Obesity is a syndrome that attributes to many factors such as genetics, diet, lifestyle and environment, which includes an imbalance of immune regulation. IL-33, as a new member of the IL-1 family, is classically associated with type 2 immune responses. Here, IL-33 was investigated for its ability to optimize lipid aggregation and ameliorate the inflammatory response in obesity. In vitro experimental results showed that, compared with the induction group, the treatment with 30 ng/mL IL-33 displayed a reduction in the number of lipid droplets. The expression levels of AceCS1 and PPARγ also decreased in the 30 ng/mL IL-33 group compared to the induction group. For confirmation in vivo, three groups of C57BL/6 mice were treated for 14 weeks: mice in control were fed with a normal diet; mice in the HFD and IL-33 groups were fed with a high-fat diet (HFD) and with sterile PBS or recombinant IL-33, respectively. Liver, muscle, spleen and four types of adipose tissue, as well as serum, were collected for further testing. Our data demonstrated that after 4-week treatment with recombinant IL-33, metabolic parameters in mice were improved significantly (visceral fat weight, glucose and insulin tolerance, liver steatosis, expression of lipid synthesis index and inflammatory response). Moreover, IL-33 treatment regulated the original distribution of IL-33 among different tissues. Hence, IL-33 modulated lipid metabolism and inflammatory response in obesity, which would be a novel therapeutic target for obesity and related metabolic diseases.

Abstract
Oleanolic acid (OA), a triterpene that is highly present in olive leaves, has been proposed as a component of functional foods for the prevention of metabolic syndrome, due to its anti-inflammatory activity. We analyzed the effects of OA on inflammatory parameters and signaling proteins in LPS-stimulated THP-1 macrophages. Thus, THP-1 macrophages were incubated with LPS for 48 h after pretreatment with OA at different concentrations. Pretreatment with OA was significantly effective in attenuating IL-6 and TNF-α overproduction induced by LPS in macrophages, and also improved the levels of AMPK-α. We also evaluated the effects of human triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRLs) derived from individuals consuming an OA-enriched functional olive oil. For this purpose, TRLs were isolated from healthy adolescents before, 2 and 5 h postprandially after the intake of a meal containing the functional olive oil or common olive oil, and were incubated with THP-1 macrophages. THP-1 macrophages incubated with TRLs isolated at 2 h after the consumption of the OA-enriched olive oil showed significant lower levels of IL-6 compared to the TRLs derived from olive oil. Our results suggest that OA might have potential to be used as a lipid-based formulation in functional olive oils to prevent inflammatory processes underlying metabolic syndrome in adolescents.

Abstract
To investigate the associations between hemoglobin (Hb) concentration and hematocrit (Hct), and blood pressure (BP) in children and adolescents. The study population consisted of 7950 subjects total (4229 boys and 3721 girls) aged 10-18 years who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys conducted between 2007 and 2017. The prevalence of hypertension was 19.19% (21.51% for boys and 16.5% for girls) among the study population, and the prevalence of obesity was 9.59% (10.5% for boys and 8.6% for girls). Hb count and Hct tended to increase with the degree of obesity and BP elevation. Systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) positively correlated with Hb count and Hct in both sexes. Following multiple linear regression analysis, Hb count and Hct presented a positive association with SBP and DBP after adjusting for age, BMI SDS, alcohol consumption, smoking status, physical activity, rural residence, household income, diagnosis of T2DM, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Hb count and Hct were positively associated with SBP and DBP in children and adolescents 10-18 years old.

Abstract
Simple Summary Type 2 diabetes(T2D) has been known to be related with obesity, insulin-resistance, impaired glucose control. Low testosterone levels and hypogonadism are also known as clinical characteristics of T2D patients. On the contrary, type 1 diabetes(T1D) happens when insulin is insufficient rather than insulin-resistance. Relationship between T1D and testosterone has not been established enough. In the study, patients with T1D showed higher testosterone levels than the general population. We could also find that higher testosterone levels have positive relationship with nephropathy, one of complications in diabetic patients. Therefore, periodic check-up for testostrone levels may be helpful for preventing nephropathy in T1D. Abstract The association between serum testosterone levels and type 1 diabetes (T1D), especially in adolescents and young adults, has not been fully investigated. We aimed to compare testosterone levels between adolescents/young men with T1D and controls and to determine the factors affecting testosterone levels. We enrolled 47 men with T1D and 32 controls aged 15–29 years. We evaluated anthropometric measurements, lipid profiles, diabetic complications, and levels of serum luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, hemoglobin A1c, 24-h urine albumin, insulin autoantibody, and total serum testosterone. We assessed the correlation between serum testosterone levels and clinical characteristics. Total testosterone levels were higher in T1D patients than in controls (694.6 ± 182.2 vs. 554.1 ± 147.3 ng/dL, p = 0.001), and 24-h urine albumin level positively correlated with total testosterone levels (correlation coefficient 0.415, p = 0.004). T1D patients with nephropathy showed higher total testosterone levels than those without nephropathy (778.4 ± 198.9 vs. 655.4 ± 162.5 ng/dL, p = 0.029). However, diabetic nephropathy and testosterone levels were not significantly associated after adjusting for confounders (β ± SE 77.5 ± 55.2, p = 0.169). Further longitudinal studies are imperative to confirm a causal relationship between testosterone levels and T1D.
