Abstract
Peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) is a complex manifestation of abdominal cancers, with a poor prognosis and limited treatment options. Recent work identifying high concentrations of the cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) and its soluble receptor (sIL-6-Rα) in the peritoneal cavity of patients with PC has highlighted this pathway as an emerging potential therapeutic target. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of the current understanding of the potential role of IL-6 in the development and progression of PC. We discuss mechansims by which the IL-6 pathway may contribute to peritoneal tumor dissemination, mesothelial adhesion and invasion, stromal invasion and proliferation, and immune response modulation. Finally, we review the prospects for targeting the IL-6 pathway in the treatment of PC, focusing on common sites of origin, including ovarian, gastric, pancreatic, colorectal and appendiceal cancer, and mesothelioma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is a peptide-containing multifunctional cytokine, which is overexpressed and/or activated in multiple malignancies and is reported to be associated with tumor development and inferior survival. At present, the role of HGF in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) has not been fully explored yet. MATERIALS AND METHODS The expression of HGF and its value in predicting survival in SCLC were explored from GEO database and in pan-cancer analysis. Furthermore, we detected the expression of HGF using tumor tissue and paired plasma samples from a validation cohort of 71 SCLC patients at our institute. Correlation between tumor and plasma HGF expression and the prognostic values were analyzed. RESULTS GEO database analysis revealed that tumor tissue had lower HGF expression than paired normal tissue in SCLC. At our institute, immunohistochemical staining showed negative expression of HGF in tumor tissue of SCLC at our institute (47/47, 100%). The average baseline plasma HGF was 1.28 (range,0.42-4.35) ng/ml. However, plasma HGF was higher in SCLC patients with patients with N3, M1, liver metastasis (LM) and bone metastasis (BM) disease compared with those N0 - 2 (1.25 vs. 1.75 ng/mL, P = 0.000), M0 (1.26 vs. 1.63 ng/mL, P = 0.003), non-LM (1.32 vs. 2.06 ng/mL, P = 0.009), and non-BM (1.35 vs. 1.77 ng/mL, P = 0.047), respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed plasma HGF was an independent predictor for LM and prognostic factor of OS. CONCLUSION Our results revealed that plasma HGF rather than tumor HGF exhibited a potential role in predicting metastasis and survival in SCLC. Plasma HGF might be used as a non-invasive detecting and monitoring tool for SCLC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND METHODS Inflammation is a hallmark of cancer and its progression. Plasma levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and YKL-40 reflect inflammation, and are elevated in patients with cancer. This study investigated whether plasma CRP, IL-6 and YKL-40 had diagnostic value in 753 patients referred with nonspecific signs and symptoms of cancer to a diagnostic outpatient clinic. RESULTS In total, 111 patients were diagnosed with cancer within 3 months and 30 after 3 months. CRP, IL-6 and YKL-40 were elevated in 44%, 60% and 45% of the cancer patients, and in 15%, 33% and 25% of the patients without cancer. Elevated levels of all three markers were associated with risk of cancer within 3 months: CRP (odds ratio (OR) 4.41, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.86-6.81), IL-6 (OR = 2.89, 1.91-4.37) and YKL-40 (OR = 2.42, 1.59-3.66). Multivariate explorative analyses showed that increasing values were associated with the risk of getting a cancer diagnosis (continuous scale: CRP (OR = 1.28, 1.12-1.47), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) (OR = 1.61, 1.41-1.98), CA19-9 (OR = 1.15, 1.03-1.29), age (OR = 1.29, 1.02-1.63); dichotomized values: CRP (OR = 2.54, 1.39-4.66), CEA (OR = 4.22, 2.13-8.34), age (OR = 1.42, 1.13-1.80)). CRP had the highest diagnostic value (area under the curve = 0.69). Combined high CRP, IL-6 and YKL-40 was associated with short overall survival (HR = 3.8, 95% CI 2.5-5.9, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION In conclusion, plasma CRP, IL-6 and YKL-40 alone or combined cannot be used to identify patients with cancer, but high levels were associated with poor prognosis. CRP may be useful to indicate whether further diagnostic evaluation is needed when patients present with nonspecific signs and symptoms of cancer.

Abstract
背景与目的 甲状腺转录因子-1(thyroid transcription factor-1, TTF-1)在非小细胞肺癌中被广泛研究,被认为是非小细胞肺癌的独立预后因子,但TTF-1在小细胞肺癌(small cell lung cancer, SCLC)中的预后价值研究较少。本研究旨在探讨TTF-1的表达状态与SCLC患者一线化疗敏感性及预后的关系。 方法 回顾性分析2017年1月1日-2019年1月1日在青岛大学附属医院确诊并治疗的、一线应用以铂类为基础的化疗的SCLC患者234例,随访患者临床特征及治疗、生存情况,采用χ2检验及Logistic回归模型分析TTF-1的表达状况与化疗反应率的关系,Kaplan-Meier法和Cox比例风险回归模型分析TTF-1的表达对患者生存期的影响。 结果 234例患者中,TTF-1阳性表达188例(80.3%, 188/234),TTF-1阴性表达46例(19.7%, 46/234),TTF-1阳性患者一线化疗客观反应率(objective response rate, ORR)高于阴性患者(70.7% vs 47.8%)(χ2=8.681, P=0.003)。Logistic回归多因素分析显示,TTF-1的表达是一线化疗ORR的独立预测因素(OR=0.216, 95%CI: 0.076-0.615, P=0.004),但此差异仅体现在局限期SCLC(limited-stage SCLC, LS-SCLC)中。TTF-1阴性表达患者中位无进展生存期(progression free survival, PFS)6.9个月短于TTF-1阳性表达患者的9.0个月(χ2=9.357, P=0.002)。TTF-1阴性组患者中位总生存期(overall survival, OS)13.3个月短于TTF-1阳性组患者的20.1个月(χ2=12.082, P=0.001)。 结论 TTF-1表达状态为SCLC患者一线化疗反应率及生存的独立预测因素,可能成为预测SCLC治疗疗效及预后的生物标志物。

Abstract
PURPOSE Cytokines are vital pro-inflammatory factors and involved in tumor immune infiltration, and immune infiltration is closely related to PD-1/PD-L1 blockades immunotherapy. This study aims to explore the associations between cytokines and prognosis and also PD-1/PD-L1 expression in early lung adenocarcinoma, which is seldom reported. METHODS 324 early lung adenocarcinoma patients with prior surgical resection were included and the associations between overall survival time and clinical factors and also cytokines including IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α were analyzed by multivariate cox regression and Kaplan-Meier curve (log-rank test). Resected tumor samples were randomly obtained to detect the PD-1/PD-L1 expression by immunohistochemistry, and Chi square test was used for relations between cytokines and PD-1/PD-L1 expression. RESULTS In this study group, 26.2% patients showed a high level of IL-1β and patients with high IL-1β level showed 19 months shortened mOS than those with normal IL-1 β expression (mOS: 24.00, 95%CI 11.98-36.02 vs 43.00, 95% CI 37.37-48.63, p = 0.017). Among detected samples, the positive rate of PD-1 was 25.0% (13/52), and the positive rate of PD-L1 was 37.3% (19/52). The positive rate of PD-1 was 36.1% higher in high-IL-1 β-level group as compared to normal-IL-1β-level group (50.0% vs 13.9%, p = 0.012). No significant association was found between IL-1 β and PD-L1 expression. CONCLUSION High expression level of IL-1β was correlated with poor prognosis and higher positive rate of PD-1 expression, which gave us insights into biomarkers of survival prediction and immunotherapy in lung adenocarcinoma. Further studies were still needed.

Abstract
The aim of current study was to evaluate the genetic variation in all the genes encoding pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in association with breast cancer development in patients from Malwa region of Punjab. The importance of the levels of interleukin (IL)-17, tumor necrosis factor, interferon γ, IL-10, IL-6, IL-4, and IL-2 with respect to clinicopathological data, prognosis, and disease-free survival was also determined in these patients. Two hundred and fifty female breast cancer patients and 250 age-matched controls were screened for variations in cytokine-encoding genes using global screening array microchip. The level of cytokines was estimated in 150 patients and 60 age-matched controls using BD™ Cytometric Bead Array (CBA) Human Th1/Th2/Th17 cytokine kit by BD Accuri flow cytometer. The difference in cytokine levels was evaluated by Mann-Whitney test. No significant variation in the genes encoding various cytokines was found between patients and controls. Out of the seven cytokines evaluated, the levels of IL-6 and IL-17a were found to be significantly high in patients in comparison with controls ( p = 0.001 and 0.02, respectively). The elevated levels of these cytokines are also associated significantly with poor outcome. We did not find any specific variation in the genes encoding various cytokines between patients and controls. However, there was a significant difference in the serum levels of IL-6 and IL-17a between patients and controls, and the elevated levels of these two cytokines associated significantly with poor outcome in breast cancer patients and, therefore, can be used as prognostic markers.
