Nitrogen-Rich Molybdenum Nitride Synthesized in a Crucible under Air

The triple bond in N2 is significantly stronger than the double bond in O2, meaning that synthesizing nitrogen-rich nitrides typically requires activated nitrogen precursors, such as ammonia, plasma-cracked atomic nitrogen, or high-pressure N2. Here, we report a synthesis of nitrogen-rich nitrides under ambient pressure and atmosphere. Using Na2MoO4 and dicyandiamide precursors, we synthesized nitrogen-rich γ-Mo2N3 in an alumina crucible under an ambient atmosphere, heated in a box furnace between 500 and 600 °C. Byproducts of this metathesis reaction include volatile gases and solid Na(OCN), which can be washed away with water. X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction showed Mo2N3 with a rock salt structure having cation vacancies, with no oxygen incorporation, in contrast to the more common nitrogen-poor rock salt Mo2N with anion vacancies. Moreover, an increase in temperature to 700 °C resulted in molybdenum oxynitride, Mo0.84N0.72O0.27. This work illustrates the potential for dicyandiamide as an ambient-temperature metathesis precursor for an increased effective nitrogen chemical potential under ambient conditions. The classical experimental setting often used for solid-state oxide synthesis, therefore, has the potential to expand the nitride chemistry.

Low-Temperature Chiral Crystal Structure and Superconductivity in (Pt0.2Ir0.8)3Zr5

We report the observation of superconductivity in (Pt0.2Ir0.8)3Zr5 with a chiral space group (P6122) at low temperatures. The bulk nature of the superconductivity at a transition temperature of 2.2 K was confirmed using specific heat measurements. We revealed that (Pt0.2Ir0.8)3Zr5 obeys the weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer model, and the dominant mechanism in the upper critical field is the orbital pair-breaking limit rather than the Pauli-Clogston limit. This indicates that the antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling caused by the chiral crystal structure does not significantly affect the superconductivity of (Pt0.2Ir0.8)3Zr5.

Nickel Carbide Nanoparticle Catalyst for Selective Hydrogenation of Nitriles to Primary Amines

Despite its unique physicochemical properties, the catalytic application of nickel carbide (Ni3 C) in organic synthesis is rare. In this study, we report well-defined nanocrystalline Ni3 C (nano-Ni3 C) as a highly active catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of nitriles to primary amines. The activity of the aluminum-oxide-supported nano-Ni3 C (nano-Ni3 C/Al2 O3 ) catalyst surpasses that of Ni nanoparticles. Various aromatic and aliphatic nitriles and dinitriles were successfully converted to the corresponding primary amines under mild conditions (1 bar H2 pressure). Furthermore, the nano-Ni3 C/Al2 O3 catalyst was reusable and applicable to gram-scale experiments. Density functional theory calculations suggest the formation of polar hydrogen species on the nano-Ni3 C surface, which were attributed to the high activity of nano-Ni3 C towards nitrile hydrogenation. This study demonstrates the utility of metal carbides as a new class of catalysts for liquid-phase organic reactions.

Observation of superconductivity and enhanced upper critical field of η-carbide-type oxide Zr4Pd2O

We report the first observation of bulk superconductivity of a η-carbide-type oxide Zr4Pd2O. The crystal structure and the superconducting properties were studied through synchrotron X-ray diffraction, magnetization, electrical resistivity, and specific heat measurement. The superconducting transition was observed at Tc = 2.73 K. Our measurement revealed that the η-carbide-type oxide superconductor Zr4Pd2O shows an enhanced upper critical field μ0Hc2(0) = 6.72 T, which violates the Pauli-Clogston limit μ0HP = 5.29 T. On the other hand, we found that the enhanced upper critical field is absent in a Rh analogue Zr4Rh2O. The large μ0Hc2(0) of Zr4Pd2O would be raised from strong spin-orbit coupling with Pd-4d electrons. The discovery of new superconducting properties for Zr4Pd2O would shed light on the further development of η-carbide-type oxide superconductors.

Fe Site Order and Magnetic Properties of Fe1/4NbS2

Transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have long been attractive to researchers for their diverse properties and high degree of tunability. Most recently, interest in magnetically intercalated TMDs has resurged due to their potential applications in spintronic devices. While certain compositions featuring the absence of inversion symmetry such as Fe1/3NbS2 and Cr1/3NbS2 have garnered the most attention, the diverse compositional space afforded through the host matrix composition as well as intercalant identity and concentration is large and remains relatively underexplored. Here, we report the magnetic ground state of Fe1/4NbS2 that was determined from low-temperature neutron powder diffraction as an A-type antiferromagnet. Despite the presence of overall inversion symmetry, the pristine compound manifests spin polarization induced by the antiferromagnetic order at generic k points, based on density functional theory band-structure calculations. Furthermore, by combining synchrotron diffraction, pair distribution function, and magnetic susceptibility measurements, we find that the magnetic properties of Fe1/4NbS2 are sensitive to the Fe site order, which can be tuned via electrochemical lithiation and thermal history.

High-glycemic index meal acutely potentiates blood pressure response to static handgrip exercise in healthy humans

Blood glucose levels acutely increase postprandially depending on the type of meal consumed. However, it remains unclear whether postprandial hyperglycemia temporally affects cardiovascular responses to static handgrip exercise (SHG-ex). Thus, this study aimed to examine whether increased blood glucose induced by consumption of a high-glycemic index (HGI) meal affects pressor response to SHG-ex. A total of 14 healthy participants (7 women and 7 men) consumed an HGI meal, a low-glycemic index (LGI) meal, or no meal (control). Participants performed 30% maximal voluntary contraction SHG-ex followed by a postexercise muscle ischemia (PEMI) test before the meal and 60 min after consuming the meal. Blood glucose, plasma insulin, and plasma triglyceride levels were measured, and the area under the curve until 60 min (AUC0-60 min) after meal consumption was calculated. The HGI and LGI groups showed higher blood glucose and insulin AUC0-60 min than the control group (P < 0.001). At 60 min after the meal, the changes in blood pressure during SHG-ex were significantly greater in the HGI group, but not in the LGI group, than in the control group. The changes in blood pressure at the onset and end of SHG-ex 60 min after the meal were positively correlated with blood glucose AUC0-60 min (r = 0.321, P = 0.038; r = 0.402, P = 0.008, respectively) and plasma insulin AUC0-60 min (r = 0.339, P = 0.028; r = 0.302, P = 0.052, respectively). However, no association was observed during PEMI. These data suggest that postprandial hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia acutely exaggerate pressor response during SHG-ex in healthy young adults.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Postprandial hyperglycemia following consumption of a high-glycemic index (HGI) meal potentiated blood pressure response to static handgrip exercise (SHG-ex) in healthy young adults. These findings provide important insight into the role of the diet on acute circulatory response to exercise in healthy adults.

Synthesis of lithium oxy-thiophosphate solid electrolytes with Li10GeP2S12 structure by a liquid phase process using 2-propanol

Lithium oxy-thiophosphates isostructural with Li₁₀GeP₂S₁₂ (LGPS) were synthesized by a liquid-phase process using 2-propanol as the solvent and Li₂S and P₂S₅ as the starting materials. The XRD and ³¹P NMR results indicate that the synthesized compound has a slightly shrieked LGPS-type crystal structure where sulfur in PS₄^3- is partially replaced by oxygen. The sample synthesized from the nominal composition of Li₂S : P₂S₅ = 2.5 : 1 and at the annealing temperature of 300 °C exhibited the ionic conductivity of 1.6 × 10^-4 S cm^-1 at 25 °C. The synthesized solid electrolyte was found to be electrochemically stable in the potential range of 0-5 V, and also relatively stable under air with low relative humidity.

Synthesis and Characterization of a Trigonal Layered Compound AgInS2

Depending on thermal and pressure conditions, AgInS₂ exhibits various crystal structures. In this study, we synthesized a high-purity polycrystalline sample of trigonal AgInS₂, which is a layered compound, using a high-pressure synthesis technique. The crystal structure was investigated by synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and the Rietveld refinement. On the basis of band calculation, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrical resistance measurements, we found that the obtained trigonal AgInS₂ is a semiconductor. Temperature dependencies of electrical resistance of AgInS₂ were measured by a diamond anvil cell up to 31.2 GPa. Although semiconducting behavior was suppressed with pressure, metallic behavior was not observed within the pressure range investigated in this study.

Noble gases and nitrogen in samples of asteroid Ryugu record its volatile sources and recent surface evolution

The near-Earth carbonaceous asteroid (162173) Ryugu is expected to contain volatile chemical species that could provide information on the origin of Earth's volatiles. Samples of Ryugu were retrieved by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. We measured noble gas and nitrogen isotopes in Ryugu samples and found that they are dominated by presolar and primordial components, incorporated during Solar System formation. Noble gas concentrations are higher than those in Ivuna-type carbonaceous (CI) chondrite meteorites. Several host phases of isotopically distinct nitrogen have different abundances among the samples. Our measurements support a close relationship between Ryugu and CI chondrites. Noble gases produced by galactic cosmic rays, indicating a ~5 million year exposure, and from implanted solar wind record the recent irradiation history of Ryugu after it migrated to its current orbit.

Formation and evolution of carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu: Direct evidence from returned samples

Samples of the carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu were brought to Earth by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. We analyzed 17 Ryugu samples measuring 1 to 8 millimeters. Carbon dioxide-bearing water inclusions are present within a pyrrhotite crystal, indicating that Ryugu's parent asteroid formed in the outer Solar System. The samples contain low abundances of materials that formed at high temperatures, such as chondrules and calcium- and aluminum-rich inclusions. The samples are rich in phyllosilicates and carbonates, which formed through aqueous alteration reactions at low temperature, high pH, and water/rock ratios of <1 (by mass). Less altered fragments contain olivine, pyroxene, amorphous silicates, calcite, and phosphide. Numerical simulations, based on the mineralogical and physical properties of the samples, indicate that Ryugu's parent body formed ~2 million years after the beginning of Solar System formation.

Samples returned from the asteroid Ryugu are similar to Ivuna-type carbonaceous meteorites

Carbonaceous meteorites are thought to be fragments of C-type (carbonaceous) asteroids. Samples of the C-type asteroid (162173) Ryugu were retrieved by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. We measured the mineralogy and bulk chemical and isotopic compositions of Ryugu samples. The samples are mainly composed of materials similar to those of carbonaceous chondrite meteorites, particularly the CI (Ivuna-type) group. The samples consist predominantly of minerals formed in aqueous fluid on a parent planetesimal. The primary minerals were altered by fluids at a temperature of 37° ± 10°C, about [Formula: see text] million (statistical) or [Formula: see text] million (systematic) years after the formation of the first solids in the Solar System. After aqueous alteration, the Ryugu samples were likely never heated above ~100°C. The samples have a chemical composition that more closely resembles that of the Sun's photosphere than other natural samples do.

Macromolecular organic matter in samples of the asteroid (162173) Ryugu

Samples of the carbonaceous asteroid (162173) Ryugu were collected and brought to Earth by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. We investigated the macromolecular organic matter in Ryugu samples and found that it contains aromatic and aliphatic carbon, ketone, and carboxyl functional groups. The spectroscopic features of the organic matter are consistent with those in chemically primitive carbonaceous chondrite meteorites that experienced parent-body aqueous alteration (reactions with liquid water). The morphology of the organic carbon includes nanoglobules and diffuse carbon associated with phyllosilicate and carbonate minerals. Deuterium and/or nitrogen-15 enrichments indicate that the organic matter formed in a cold molecular cloud or the presolar nebula. The diversity of the organic matter indicates variable levels of aqueous alteration on Ryugu's parent body.

Soluble organic molecules in samples of the carbonaceous asteroid (162173) Ryugu

The Hayabusa2 spacecraft collected samples from the surface of the carbonaceous near-Earth asteroid (162173) Ryugu and brought them to Earth. The samples were expected to contain organic molecules, which record processes that occurred in the early Solar System. We analyzed organic molecules extracted from the Ryugu surface samples. We identified a variety of molecules containing the atoms CHNOS, formed by methylation, hydration, hydroxylation, and sulfurization reactions. Amino acids, aliphatic amines, carboxylic acids, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and nitrogen-heterocyclic compounds were detected, which had properties consistent with an abiotic origin. These compounds likely arose from an aqueous reaction on Ryugu's parent body and are similar to the organics in Ivuna-type meteorites. These molecules can survive on the surfaces of asteroids and be transported throughout the Solar System.

A dehydrated space-weathered skin cloaking the hydrated interior of Ryugu

Without a protective atmosphere, space-exposed surfaces of airless Solar System bodies gradually experience an alteration in composition, structure and optical properties through a collective process called space weathering. The return of samples from near-Earth asteroid (162173) Ryugu by Hayabusa2 provides the first opportunity for laboratory study of space-weathering signatures on the most abundant type of inner solar system body: a C-type asteroid, composed of materials largely unchanged since the formation of the Solar System. Weathered Ryugu grains show areas of surface amorphization and partial melting of phyllosilicates, in which reduction from Fe³⁺ to Fe²⁺ and dehydration developed. Space weathering probably contributed to dehydration by dehydroxylation of Ryugu surface phyllosilicates that had already lost interlayer water molecules and to weakening of the 2.7 µm hydroxyl (-OH) band in reflectance spectra. For C-type asteroids in general, this indicates that a weak 2.7 µm band can signify space-weathering-induced surface dehydration, rather than bulk volatile loss.

First asteroid gas sample delivered by the Hayabusa2 mission: A treasure box from Ryugu

The Hayabusa2 spacecraft returned to Earth from the asteroid 162173 Ryugu on 6 December 2020. One day after the recovery, the gas species retained in the sample container were extracted and measured on-site and stored in gas collection bottles. The container gas consists of helium and neon with an extraterrestrial ³He/⁴He and ²⁰Ne/²²Ne ratios, along with some contaminant terrestrial atmospheric gases. A mixture of solar and Earth's atmospheric gas is the best explanation for the container gas composition. Fragmentation of Ryugu grains within the sample container is discussed on the basis of the estimated amount of indigenous He and the size distribution of the recovered Ryugu grains. This is the first successful return of gas species from a near-Earth asteroid.

Investigation of Superconductivity in Ce-Doped (La,Pr)OBiS2 Single Crystals

Single crystals of Ce-doped (La,Pr)OBiS₂ superconductors, the multinary rare-earth elements substituted ROBiS₂, were successfully grown. The grown crystals typically had a size of 1–2 mm and a plate-like shape with a well-developed c-plane. The c-axis lattice constants of the obtained (La,Ce,Pr)OBiS₂ single crystals were approximately 13.6–13.7 Å, and the superconducting transition temperature was 1.23–2.18 K. Valence fluctuations of Ce and Pr were detected through X-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis. In contrast to (Ce,Pr)OBiS₂ and (La,Ce)OBiS₂, the superconducting transition temperature of (La,Ce,Pr)OBiS₂ increased with the increasing concentrations of the tetravalent state at the R-site.

Synthesis and Characterization of High-Entropy-Alloy-Type Layered Telluride MBi2Te4 (M = Ag, In, Sn, Pb, Bi)

Recently, high-entropy alloys (HEAs) and HEA-type compounds have been extensively studied in the fields of material science and engineering. In this article, we report on the synthesis of a layered system MBi2Te4 where the M site possesses low-, middle-, and high-entropy states. The samples with M = Pb, Ag1/3Pb1/3Bi1/3, and Ag1/5In1/5Sn1/5Pb1/5Bi1/5 were newly synthesized and the crystal structure was examined by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement. We found that the M-Te2 distance was systematically compressed with decreasing lattice constants, where the configurational entropy of mixing at the M site is also systematically increased. The details of structural refinements and the electrical transport property are presented.

Pebbles and sand on asteroid (162173) Ryugu: In situ observation and particles returned to Earth

The Hayabusa2 spacecraft investigated the C-type (carbonaceous) asteroid (162173) Ryugu. The mission performed two landing operations to collect samples of surface and subsurface material, the latter exposed by an artificial impact. We present images of the second touchdown site, finding that ejecta from the impact crater was present at the sample location. Surface pebbles at both landing sites show morphological variations ranging from rugged to smooth, similar to Ryugu's boulders, and shapes from quasi-spherical to flattened. The samples were returned to Earth on 6 December 2020. We describe the morphology of >5 grams of returned pebbles and sand. Their diverse color, shape, and structure are consistent with the observed materials of Ryugu; we conclude that they are a representative sample of the asteroid.

Highly active and stable surface structure for oxygen evolution reaction originating from balanced dissolution and strong connectivity in BaIrO3 solid solutions

Catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are receiving great interest since OER remains the bottleneck of water electrolyzers for hydrogen production. Especially, OER in acidic solutions is crucial since it produces high current densities and avoids precipitation of carbonates. However, even the acid stable iridates undergo severe dissolution during the OER. BaIrO₃ has the strongest IrO₆ connectivity and stable surface structure, yet it suffers from lattice collapse after OER cycling, making it difficult to improve the OER durability. In the present study, we have successfully developed an OER catalyst with both high intrinsic activity and stability under acidic conditions by preventing the lattice collapse after repeated OER cycling. Specifically, we find that the substitution of Ir-site with Mn for BaIrO₃ in combination with OER cycling leads to a remarkable activity enhancement by a factor of 28 and an overall improvement in stability. This dual enhancement of OER performance was accomplished by the novel strategy of slightly increasing the Ir-dissolution and balancing the elemental dissolution in BaIr_1−xMn_xO₃ to reconstruct a rigid surface with BaIrO₃-type structure. More importantly, the mass activity for BaIr_0.8Mn_0.2O₃ reached ∼73 times of that for IrO₂, making it a sustainable and promising OER catalyst for energy conversion technologies.

We have prevented lattice collapse and developed an OER catalyst with both high activity and stability by slightly increasing Ir-dissolution and balancing the elemental dissolution in BaIr_1−xMn_xO₃ for reconstructing the rigid catalytic surface.

Cd additive effect on self-flux growth of Cs-intercalated NbS2 superconducting single crystals

Single crystals of Cs-intercalated NbS2 (Cs x NbS2) were synthesized using a CsCl/KCl self-flux. The size and Cs content of Cs x NbS2 single crystals increased upon adding Cd metal into the starting materials. When 10–30 at% of Cd per Nb was provided in the starting materials, plate-like Cs x NbS2 (x ∼ 0.3) single crystals with 1–2 mm in size and 10–100 μm in thickness were obtained. The superconducting transition temperature of these Cs x NbS2 single crystals was 1.65 K.

Sodium bicarbonate ingestion mitigates the heat-induced hyperventilation and reduction in cerebral blood velocity during exercise in the heat

Hyperthermia during exercise in the heat causes minute ventilation ([Formula: see text]) to increase, which leads to reductions in arterial CO₂ partial pressure ([Formula: see text]) and cerebral blood flow. On the other hand, sodium bicarbonate ingestion reportedly results in metabolic alkalosis, leading to decreased [Formula: see text] and increased [Formula: see text] during prolonged exercise in a thermoneutral environment. Here, we investigated whether sodium bicarbonate ingestion suppresses heat-induced hyperventilation and the resultant hypocapnia and cerebral hypoperfusion during prolonged exercise in the heat. Eleven healthy men ingested a solution of sodium bicarbonate (0.3 g/kg body wt) (NaHCO₃ trial) or sodium chloride (0.208 g/kg) (NaCl trial). Ninety minutes after the ingestion, the subjects performed a cycle exercise for 60 min at 50% of peak oxygen uptake in the heat (35°C and 40% relative humidity). Esophageal temperature did not differ between the trials throughout (P = 0.56, main effect of trial). [Formula: see text] gradually increased with exercise duration in the NaCl trial, but the increases in [Formula: see text] were attenuated in the NaHCO₃ trial (P = 0.01, main effect of trial). Correspondingly, estimated [Formula: see text] and middle cerebral artery blood velocity (an index of anterior cerebral blood flow) were higher in the NaHCO₃ than the NaCl trial (P = 0.002 and 0.04, main effects of trial). Ratings of perceived exertion were lower in the NaHCO₃ than the NaCl trial (P = 0.02, main effect of trial). These results indicate that sodium bicarbonate ingestion mitigates heat-induced hyperventilation and reductions in [Formula: see text] and cerebral blood velocity during prolonged exercise in the heat.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Hyperthermia causes hyperventilation and concomitant hypocapnia and cerebral hypoperfusion. The cerebral hypoperfusion may underlie central fatigue. We demonstrate that sodium bicarbonate ingestion reduces heat-induced hyperventilation and attenuates hypocapnia-related cerebral hypoperfusion during prolonged exercise in the heat. In addition, we show that sodium bicarbonate ingestion reduces ratings of perceived exertion during the exercise. This study provides new insight into the development of effective strategies for preventing central fatigue during exercise in the heat.

Combustion Reactions between Transition-Metal Chlorides and Sodium Amide and Their Ignition Temperature

Combustion reactions between metal chlorides and sodium amide proceed in a short time; however, these reactions must be carried out with appropriate safety measures. Investigating their ignition temperatures would facilitate safe handling and give kinetic insights about the reaction between powders. Here, we investigated the products of the reactions between metal chlorides and sodium amide and measured their ignition temperatures. The products were mainly composed of nitrides, metals, and sodium chloride. The reactions of 4d and 5d metal chlorides initiated the reaction below room temperature, while 3d metal chlorides, except copper chloride, initiated the reaction upon heating. We found the correlation between the ignition temperatures and the reaction energies of the combustion reaction.

Kinetically Stabilized Cation Arrangement in Li3 YCl6 Superionic Conductor during Solid-State Reaction

The main approach for exploring metastable materials is via trial-and-error synthesis, and there is limited understanding of how metastable materials are kinetically stabilized. In this study, a metastable phase superionic conductor, β-Li₃ YCl₆ , is discovered through in situ X-ray diffraction after heating a mixture of LiCl and YCl₃ powders. While Cl^- arrangement is represented as a hexagonal close packed structure in both metastable β-Li₃ YCl₆ synthesized below 600 K and stable α-Li₃ YCl₆ above 600 K, the arrangement of Li⁺ and Y³⁺ in β-Li₃ YCl₆ determined by neutron diffraction brought about the cell with a 1/√3 a-axis and a similar c-axis of stable α-Li₃ YCl₆ . Higher Li⁺ ion conductivity and lower activation energy for Li⁺ transport are observed in comparison with α-Li₃ YCl₆ . The computationally calculated low migration barrier of Li⁺ supports the low activation energy for Li⁺ conduction, and the calculated high migration barrier of Y³⁺ kinetically stabilizes this metastable phase by impeding phase transformation to α-Li₃ YCl₆ . This work shows that the combination of in situ observation of solid-state reactions and computation of the migration energy can facilitate the comprehension of the solid-state reactions allowing kinetic stabilization of metastable materials, and can enable the discovery of new metastable materials in a short time.

Observing and Modeling the Sequential Pairwise Reactions that Drive Solid-State Ceramic Synthesis

Solid-state synthesis from powder precursors is the primary processing route to advanced multicomponent ceramic materials. Designing reaction conditions and precursors for ceramic synthesis can be a laborious, trial-and-error process, as heterogeneous mixtures of precursors often evolve through a complicated series of reaction intermediates. Here, ab initio thermodynamics is used to model which pair of precursors has the most reactive interface, enabling the understanding and anticipation of which non-equilibrium intermediates form in the early stages of a solid-state reaction. In situ X-ray diffraction and in situ electron microscopy are then used to observe how these initial intermediates influence phase evolution in the synthesis of the classic high-temperature superconductor YBa₂ Cu₃ O_{6+ x}   (YBCO). The model developed herein rationalizes how the replacement of the traditional BaCO₃ precursor with BaO₂ redirects phase evolution through a low-temperature eutectic melt, facilitating the formation of YBCO in 30 min instead of 12+ h. Precursor selection plays an important role in tuning the thermodynamics of interfacial reactions and emerges as an important design parameter in planning kinetically favorable synthesis pathways to complex ceramic materials.

Formation Mechanism of β-Li3PS4 through Decomposition of Complexes

β-Li₃PS₄ is a solid electrolyte with high Li⁺ conductivity, applicable to sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries. While a β-Li₃PS₄-synthesized by solid-state reaction forms only in a narrow 300-450 °C temperature range upon heating, β-Li₃PS₄ is readily available by liquid-phase synthesis through low-temperature thermal decomposition of complexes composed of PS₄^3- and various organic solvents. However, the conversion mechanism of β-Li₃PS₄ from these complexes is not yet understood. Herein, we proposed the synthesis mechanism of β-Li₃PS₄ from Li₃PS₄·acetonitrile (Li₃PS₄·ACN) and Li₃PS₄·1,2-dimethoxyethane (Li₃PS₄·DME), whose structural similarity with β-Li₃PS₄ would reduce the nucleation barrier for the formation of β-Li₃PS₄. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction clarified that both complexes possess similar layered structures consisting of alternating Li₂PS₄^- and Li⁺-ACN/DME layers. ACN/DME was removed from these complexes upon heating, and rotation of the PS₄ tetrahedra induced a uniaxial compression to form the β-Li₃PS₄ framework.

Kinetic Control of the Li0.9Mn1.6Ni0.4O4 Spinel Structure with Enhanced Electrochemical Performance

The development of more sustainable societies has become an urgent goal worldwide. Electrical batteries are currently seen as one of the most important energy storage technologies for the development of decarbonized societies. However, many lithium-ion battery manufacturers currently utilize cobalt, a toxic and hazardous mineral, in their batteries. Lithium-deficient manganese nickel oxide spinels are considered promising candidates owing to their high potential and environmental friendliness. Their electrochemical performance highly depends on their average and local structures, such as phase purities, lattice parameters, and cation sites. Thus, a synthesis protocol should be designed to control these structural parameters to improve their electrochemical performance. In this study, we controlled the average and local structures of Li_0.9Mn_1.6Ni_0.4O₄ spinels obtained by co-precipitation by optimizing their cooling rates. High-resolution techniques, including transmission electron microscopy, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and Auger-composition analysis combined with density functional theory calculations, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and electrochemical analysis, were used to understand the average and local structural variations and their effects on the electrochemical properties. As a result, the control of oxygen diffusion at different cooling rates can promote the rearrangement of the structure, resulting in a cation-disordered spinel with minimal variations in lattice parameters and composition. Excellent electrochemical properties were noted in the cation-disordered spinel with high crystallinity and a slightly oxygen-rich surface produced via optimized cooling rates.

Evolution of two bulk-superconducting phases in Sr0.5RE0.5FBiS2 (RE: La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm) by external hydrostatic pressure effect

Polycrystalline samples of Sr0.5RE0.5FBiS2 (RE: La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm) were synthesized via the solid-state reaction and characterized using synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Although all the Sr0.5RE0.5FBiS2 samples exhibited superconductivity at transition temperatures (Tc) within the range of 2.1-2.7 K under ambient pressure, the estimated superconducting volume fraction was small, which indicates non-bulk nature of superconductivity in those samples under ambient pressure. A dramatic increase in shielding fraction, which indicates the emergence of the bulk superconductivity was achieved by applying external hydrostatic pressures. We found that two phases, low-P phases with Tc = 2.5-2.8 K and high-P phases with Tc = 10.0-10.8 K, were induced by the pressure effect for samples with RE = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd. Pressure-Tc phase diagrams indicated that the critical pressure for the emergence of the high-P phase tends to increase with decreasing ionic radius of the doped RE ions, which was explained by the correlation between external and chemical pressure effects. According to the high-pressure X-ray diffraction measurements of Sr0.5La0.5FBiS2, a structural phase transition from tetragonal to monoclinic also occurred at approximately 1.1 GPa. Bulk superconducting phases in Sr0.5RE0.5FBiS2 induced by the external hydrostatic pressure effect are expected to be useful for understanding the effects of both external and chemical pressures to the emergence of bulk superconductivity and pairing mechanisms in BiCh2-based superconductors.

Growth and Characterization of ROBiS2 High-Entropy Superconducting Single Crystals

A series of high-entropy superconductors, ROBiS₂ (R = La + Ce + Pr + Nd + Sm), have been successfully grown in the form of single crystals using CsCl flux. The obtained single crystals have a platelike shape with a size of 0.5-2.0 mm and a thickness of 70-450 μm, and they are cleavable along the c-plane. The c-axis lattice constants of the obtained ROBiS₂ single crystals have similar values of 13.47-13.57 Å. The Ce in the obtained ROBiS₂ single crystals was in a mixed-valence state, comprising both Ce³⁺ and Ce⁴⁺. On the other hand, Pr and Sm showed only the trivalent state. The superconducting transition temperatures of ROBiS₂ single crystals were approximately 2-4 K. The superconducting transition temperature and superconducting anisotropies of R-site mixed high-entropy samples increased with a decrease in the mean ionic radius of the R-site. Moreover, a deviation in the tendency to exhibit superconducting properties was observed based on the difference in the R-site mixed entropy. R-site mixed entropy in ROBiS₂ superconductors may affect their superconducting properties.

Crystal Structure and Thermoelectric Transport Properties of As-Doped Layered Pnictogen Oxyselenides NdO0.8F0.2Sb1-xAsxSe2

We report the synthesis and thermoelectric transport properties of As-doped layered pnictogen oxyselenides NdO_0.8F_0.2Sb_1−xAs_xSe₂ (x ≤ 0.6), which are predicted to show high-performance thermoelectric properties based on first-principles calculation. The crystal structure of these compounds belongs to the tetragonal P4/nmm space group (No. 129) at room temperature. The lattice parameter c decreases with increasing x, while a remains almost unchanged among the samples. Despite isovalent substitution of As for Sb, electrical resistivity significantly rises with increasing x. Very low thermal conductivity of less than 0.8 Wm⁻¹K⁻¹ is observed at temperatures between 300 and 673 K for all the examined samples. For As-doped samples, the thermal conductivity further decreases above 600 K. Temperature-dependent synchrotron X-ray diffraction indicates that an anomaly also occurs in the c-axis length at around 600 K, which may relate to the thermal transport properties.

Carotid baroreflex control of central and peripheral hemodynamics during recovery after moderate leg cycling exercise

This study aimed to examine the carotid baroreflex (CBR) control of the central and peripheral hemodynamics after exercise using the neck pressure (NP) and neck suction (NS) technique. Sixteen healthy young male participants (age: 27 ± 1.5 yr) were in a supine position for 30 min preexercise, followed by 60 min of cycling exercise, and then returned to a supine position for an additional 60 min postexercise. Both pre- and postexercise, the CBR-mediated responses of the central and peripheral hemodynamics were evaluated using 5-s periods of NP and NS (-60, -40, or +40 mmHg). As the central hemodynamics measurements, heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), cardiac output, and total vascular conductance were assessed. To determine peripheral circulation, vascular conductance in active and inactive limbs was measured. Eight participants [responder (RE) group] showed substantial postexercise hypotension (PEH) during recovery from exercise (Δ MAP: approximately -5 ± 0.9 mmHg, P < 0.05). The other eight participants did not display a reduction in MAP after exercise (non-RE group). In the non-RE group, the responsiveness of CBR-mediated changes in HR, MAP, and vascular conductance increased, particularly in response to -40 mmHg NS during postexercise compared with preexercise. However, in the RE group, any alterations in responsiveness to NP and NS were unchanged during PEH compared with preexercise. In conclusion, some normotensive individuals do not show PEH because the responsiveness of the CBR in central and peripheral hemodynamics following exercise is augmented, particularly to high blood pressure.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The carotid baroreflex (CBR) control of central and peripheral hemodynamics was investigated after exercise in both the presence and absence of postexercise hypotension (PEH). In individuals with no PEH, the responsiveness of CBR-mediated changes in all hemodynamics was augmented after exercise, particularly to high blood pressure; conversely, the CBR responsiveness remained unchanged in individuals with PEH. These findings provide insight into the mechanism of CBR control after exercise.

An artificial impact on the asteroid (162173) Ryugu formed a crater in the gravity-dominated regime

The Hayabusa2 spacecraft investigated the small asteroid Ryugu, which has a rubble-pile structure. We describe an impact experiment on Ryugu using Hayabusa2's Small Carry-on Impactor. The impact produced an artificial crater with a diameter >10 meters, which has a semicircular shape, an elevated rim, and a central pit. Images of the impact and resulting ejecta were recorded by the Deployable CAMera 3 for >8 minutes, showing the growth of an ejecta curtain (the outer edge of the ejecta) and deposition of ejecta onto the surface. The ejecta curtain was asymmetric and heterogeneous and it never fully detached from the surface. The crater formed in the gravity-dominated regime; in other words, crater growth was limited by gravity not surface strength. We discuss implications for Ryugu's surface age.

Flux Growth and Superconducting Properties of (Ce,Pr)OBiS2 Single Crystals

Ce_1−xPr_xOBiS₂ (0. 1 ≤ x ≤ 0.9) single crystals were grown using a CsCl flux method. Their structural and physical properties were examined by X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption, transmission electron microscopy, and electrical resistivity. All of the Ce_1−xPr_xOBiS₂ single crystals with 0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.9 exhibited tetragonal phase. With increasing Pr content, the a-axis and c-axis lattice parameters decreased and increased, respectively. Transmission electron microscope analysis of Ce_0.1Pr_0.9OBiS₂ (x = 0.9) single crystal showed no stacking faults. Atomic-resolution energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry mapping revealed that Bi, Ce/Pr, O, and S occupied different crystallographic sites, while Ce and Pr randomly occupied the same sites. X-ray absorption spectra showed that an increase of the Pr ratio increased the ratio of Ce⁴⁺/Ce³⁺. All of the Ce_1−xPr_xOBiS₂ crystals showed superconducting transition, with a maximum transition temperature of ~4 K at x = 0.9.

Redox reactions of small organic molecules using ball milling and piezoelectric materials

Over the past decade, photoredox catalysis has harnessed light energy to accelerate bond-forming reactions. We postulated that a complementary method for the redox-activation of small organic molecules in response to applied mechanical energy could be developed through the piezoelectric effect. Here, we report that agitation of piezoelectric materials via ball milling reduces aryl diazonium salts. This mechanoredox system can be applied to arylation and borylation reactions under mechanochemical conditions.

An electronic structure governed by the displacement of the indium site in In-S6 octahedra: LnOInS2 (Ln = La, Ce, and Pr)

An extremely large displacement of the indium site in In-S₆ octahedra in LnOInS₂ (Ln = La, Ce, and Pr) was found in synchrotron X-ray diffraction. LaOInS₂ with off-center indium in In-S₆ octahedra exhibited a wider optical band gap than CeOInS₂ and PrOInS₂ with on-center indium. Therefore, the electronic structure of LnOInS₂ is governed by the indium site with an extremely large displacement. All LnOInS₂ produced H₂ gas under visible light irradiation in the presence of sacrificial electron donors.

An anatomical hypothesis: a "concentric-structured model" for the theoretical understanding of the surgical anatomy in the upper mediastinum required for esophagectomy with radical mediastinal lymph node dissection

Understanding the surgical anatomy is the key to reducing surgical invasiveness especially in the upper mediastinal dissection for esophageal cancer, which is supposed to have a significant impact on curability and morbidity. However, there is no theoretical recognition regarding the surgical anatomy required for esophagectomy, although the surgical anatomy in abdominal digestive surgery has been developed on the basis of embryological findings of intestinal rotation and fusion fascia. Therefore, we developed a hypothesis of a 'concentric-structured model' of the surgical anatomy in the upper mediastinum based on human embryonic development. This model was characterized by three factors: (1) a concentric and symmetric three-layer structure, (2) bilateral vascular distribution, and (3) an 'inter-layer potential space' composed of loose connective tissue. The concentric three-layer structure consists of the 'visceral layer', the 'vascular layer', and the 'parietal layer': the visceral layer containing the esophagus, trachea, and recurrent laryngeal nerves as the central core, the vascular layer of major blood vessels surrounding the visceral core to maintain the circulation, and the parietal layer as the outer frame of the body. The bilateral vascular distribution consists of the inferior thyroid arteries and bronchial arteries originating from the bilateral dorsal aortae in an embryo. This bilateral vascular distribution may be related to the formation of the proper mesentery of the esophagus and frequent lymph node metastasis observed in the visceral layer around recurrent laryngeal nerves. The three concentric layers are bordered by loose connective tissue called the 'inter-layer potential space'. This inter-layer potential space is the fundamental factor of our concentric-structured model as the appropriate surgical plane of dissection. The peripheral blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatics transition between each layer, thereby penetrating this loose connective tissue forming the inter-layer potential space. Recurrent laryngeal nerves also transition from the vascular layer after branching off from the vagal nerves and then ascend consistently in the visceral layer. We investigated the validity of this concentric-structured model, confirming the intraoperative images and the surgical outcomes of thoracoscopic esophagectomy in a prone position (TSEP) before and after the introduction of this hypothetical anatomy model. A total of 226 patients with esophageal cancer underwent TSEP from January 2015 to December 2016. After the introduction of this model, the surgical outcomes in 105 patients clearly improved for the operation time of the thoracoscopic procedure (160 min vs. 182 min, P = 0.01) and the incidence of recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy (19.0% vs. 36.4%, P = 0.004). Moreover, we were able to identify the concentric and symmetric layer structure through surgical dissection along the inter-layer potential space between the visceral and vascular layers ('viscero-vascular space') in all 105 cases after introduction of the hypothetical model. The concentric-structured model based on embryonic development is clinically beneficial for achieving less-invasive esophagectomy by ensuring a theoretical understanding of the surgical anatomy in the upper mediastinum.

Doping-Induced Polymorph and Carrier Polarity Changes in Thermoelectric Ag(Bi,Sb)Se2 Solid Solution

Silver bismuth diselenide (AgBiSe₂) is an n-type thermoelectric material that exhibits a complex structural phase transition from the hexagonal to cubic phase, while silver antimony diselenide (AgSbSe₂) is a p-type thermoelectric material that crystallizes in the cubic phase at all temperatures. Here, we investigate the crystal structure and thermoelectric properties of Ag(Bi,Sb)Se₂ solid solution, employing AgBi_0.9Sb_0.1Se₂ and AgBi_0.7Sb_0.3Se₂ as representative samples. The carrier polarity of AgBi_0.9Sb_0.1Se₂ is converted from the n-type to p-type by Pb doping, accompanied by a polymorphic change to the cubic phase. It is difficult to obtain highly conductive p-type hexagonal AgBiSe₂-based materials, although first-principles calculations predict high-performance thermoelectric properties for these systems. We also demonstrate that cubic AgBi_0.7Sb_0.3Se₂ undergoes a polymorphic change to the hexagonal phase upon Nb doping. The present study show that polymorphic changes inevitably occurred upon Pb/Nb doping to optimize thermoelectric properties of Ag(Bi,Sb)Se₂ solid solution.

Na1-xSn2P2 as a new member of van der Waals-type layered tin pnictide superconductors

Superconductors with a van der Waals (vdW) structure have attracted a considerable interest because of the possibility for truly two-dimensional (2D) superconducting systems. We recently reported NaSn₂As₂ as a novel vdW-type superconductor with transition temperature (T_c) of 1.3 K. Herein, we present the crystal structure and superconductivity of new material Na_1−xSn₂P₂ with T_c = 2.0 K. Its crystal structure consists of two layers of a buckled honeycomb network of SnP, bound by the vdW forces and separated by Na ions, as similar to that of NaSn₂As₂. Amount of Na deficiency (x) was estimated to be 0.074(18) using synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Bulk nature of superconductivity was confirmed by the measurements of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat. First-principles calculation using density functional theory shows that Na_1−xSn₂P₂ and NaSn₂As₂ have comparable electronic structure, suggesting higher T_c of Na_1−xSn₂P₂ resulted from increased density of states at the Fermi level due to Na deficiency. Because there are various structural analogues with tin-pnictide (SnPn) conducting layers, our results indicate that SnPn-based layered compounds can be categorized into a novel family of vdW-type superconductors, providing a new platform for studies on physics and chemistry of low-dimensional superconductors.

Crystal Structure and Superconductivity of Tetragonal and Monoclinic Ce1- xPr xOBiS2

Ce_{1- x}Pr _xOBiS₂ powders and Ce_0.5Pr_0.5OBiS₂ single crystals were synthesized and their structure and superconductive properties were examined by X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption, electronic resistivity, and magnetization. While PrOBiS₂ was found to be in a monoclinic phase with one-dimensional Bi-S zigzag chains showing no superconductive transition above 0.1 K, CeOBiS₂ was in a tetragonal phase with two-dimensional Bi-S planes showing zero resistivity below 1.3 K. In the range x = 0.3-0.9 in Ce_{1- x}Pr _xOBiS₂, both monoclinic and tetragonal phases were formed together with zero resistivity up to a maximum temperature of 2.2 K. A Ce_0.5Pr_0.5OBiS₂ single crystal, which showed both zero resistivity and a decrease in magnetization at ∼2.4 K, presented a tetragonal structure. Short Bi-S bonding in flat two-dimensional Bi-S planes and mixed Ce³⁺/Ce⁴⁺ were characteristic features of the Ce_0.5Pr_0.5OBiS₂ single crystal, which presumably triggered its superconductivity.
