Abstract
In this study, our goal was to synthesize novel aryl tacrine derivatives and assess their potential as anticancer, antibacterial agents, and enzyme inhibitors. We adopted a two-step approach, initiating with the synthesis of dibromotacrine derivatives 3 and 4 through the Friedlander reaction. These intermediates underwent further transformation into diarylated tacrine derivatives 3a-e and 4a-e using a Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. Thorough characterization of these novel diarylated tacrines was achieved using various spectroscopic techniques. Our findings highlighted the potent anticancer effects of these innovative compounds across a range of cancer cell lines, including lung, gynecologic, bone, colon, and breast cancers, while demonstrating low cytotoxicity against normal cells. Notably, these compounds surpassed the control drug, 5-Fluorouracil, in terms of antiproliferative activity in numerous cancer cell lines. Moreover, our investigation included an analysis of the inhibitory properties of these novel compounds against various microorganisms and cytosolic carbonic anhydrase enzymes. The results suggest their potential for further exploration as cancer-specific, enzyme inhibitory, and antibacterial therapeutic agents. Notably, four compounds, namely, 5,7-bis(4-(methylthio)phenyl)tacrine (3d), 5,7-bis(4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenyl)tacrine (3e), 2,4-bis(4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenyl)-7,8,9,10-tetrahydro-6H-cyclohepta[b]quinolin-11-amine (4e), and 6,8-dibromotacrine (3), emerged as the most promising candidates for preclinical studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ferulago setifolia K. Koch (Apiaceae) has been the subject of this study, aiming to comprehensively determine its phenolic fingerprint and evaluate its various biological activities. The liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis of the 70% methanol extract of F. setifolia (FS) revealed the presence of 23 phytochemicals, among which chlorogenic acid, quinic acid, kaempferol-3-O-glucoside, and quercetin-3-O-glucoside were identified as the major phenolics in the extract. RESULTS The biological screening included examinations of antioxidant, antibacterial, antiproliferative, and cytotoxic activities. The FS extract displayed moderate 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging and ferric-reducing capacity, indicating moderate antioxidant activity. Furthermore, FS exhibited significant antiproliferative effects on cancer cells while showing low cytotoxicity on normal cells. The antibacterial activity findings revealed that FS demonstrated potent activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. CONCLUSION The findings of this study suggest that the methanolic extract of FS holds promise as a potential source of biologically active compounds. It can be utilized for the development of pharmaceutical formulations, thanks to its significant antiproliferative and antibacterial activities. Additionally, FS can serve as a valuable source of chlorogenic acid for industrial applications. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
A novel phenylethanoid, ferruginoside D, together with fourteen known compounds were isolated from the Verbascum leiocarpum for the first time. Chemical structures of isolated compounds were determined by spectroscopic analysis including HR-ESI-MS and NMR spectra. The antioxidant, α-glucosidase inhibitory properties, and antiproliferative activities against multiple cell lines (A172, C6, HeLa, A2780, SW620, HT29, Beas2B, RPE, and HSF) of the isolated compounds were evaluated in vitro. According to the results, iridoids, flavonoids (luteolin and apigenin), and phenylethanoids (poliumoside and isoverbascoside) with strong antiproliferative potential were also found to have cytostatic effects. Furthermore, the investigation revealed that compounds luteolin, poliumoside, verbascoside, isoverbascoside, ferruginoside C, ferruginoside D, and ursolic acid show potent alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity, while compounds luteolin, verbascoside, and isoverbascoside exhibit substantial antioxidant activity. The new compound (ferruginoside D) was found moderately active against cancer cell lines, with strong alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity, and moderate antioxidant properties.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In the literature, rates of up to 37.1% have been reported for 1-year mortality after hip fractures. In this study, we aimed to determine whether the C-reactive protein/albumin ratio (CAR) is an independent risk factor for 1-year mortality after hip fracture and whether CAR, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), CRP, albumin level, and other parameters have an effect on mortality and morbidity. PATIENTS AND METHODS Over a 3-year period, 480 patients aged 65 years and older who underwent hemiarthroplasty for hip fracture were analyzed. A univariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify prognostic factors for 1-year mortality. Significant variables were re-evaluated using binary logistic regression analysis. RESULTS The number of patients who died within 1 year postoperatively was 95 (27.7%), and the median age was 85 years. In the receiver operating characteristic analysis (ROC) for 1-year mortality after hip fracture, the optimal cut-off value of CAR was found to be 1.03. The area under the curve (AUC) for mortality was 0.843, the sensitivity was 65.3%, and the specificity was 92.7% [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.791-0.895; p < 0.001]. The optimal cut-off value for CRP was 2.85, the AUC was 0.838, the sensitivity was 70%, and the specificity was 89% (95% CI, 0.785-0.890; p < 0.001). The optimal cut-off value of NLR for postoperative intensive care unit (ICU) admission was determined to be 6.64. CONCLUSIONS CAR was a predictive factor for 1-year postoperative mortality and postoperative ICU admission, whereas NLR was a predictive factor for postoperative ICU admission.

Abstract
Purpose:
This study aimed at the determination of the antiproliferative and cytotoxic activities of recently prepared indeno [1,2-b]quinoline amines against colon carcinoma, HT29 and SW620 cell lines by using cell proliferation and cytotoxicity assays.
Methods:
In vitro inhibition of cell proliferation of indenoquinoline derivatives was determined with an MTT cell proliferation assay. On the other hand, their cell cytotoxicities and apoptotic potential were investigated by LDH cytotoxicity and DNA laddering assays. Moreover, molecular docking studies were performed between the compounds and PDB ID: 1OLG and 4LVT target proteins using virtual scanning techniques.
Results:
Most of the compounds (1, 3, and 7-9) exhibit much more potent antiproliferative activity than positive controls against HT29 and SW620 cell lines (IC50 values 1.1 - 4.1 µg/mL) and show slightly toxic properties (percent cytotoxicity 9.8% to 33.5%) to cells compared to positive control. On the other hand, it was determined that effective compounds 1, 2, 3 and 9 stimulated apoptosis on HT29 and SW620. Moreover, the anticancer effect of the recent indeno[1,2-b]quinoline amine derivatives was investigated with the help of molecular docking simulations for their pharmacokinetics. The molecular docking results displayed that mono bromo (1-3) and phenyl (7-9) substituted indeno [1,2-b]quinoline amines interact with mutated p53 and protein Blc-2 residues with hydrogen bonding and polar interactions, respectively.
Conclusion:
As a result, the preliminary experimental data and in silico studies indicated that the mono-substituted indenoquinoline amine derivatives, especially 1, 3, and 7-9, exhibit effective pharmacological properties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sinus tarsi syndrome is characterized by permanent pain on the anterolateral side of the ankle due to chronic inflammation characterized by fibrotic tissue remnants and synovitis accumulation after repeated traumatic injuries. Few studies have documented the outcome of injection treatments for sinus tarsi syndrome. We sought to determine the effects of corticosteroid and local anesthetic (CLA), platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and ozone injections on sinus tarsi syndrome. METHODS Sixty patients with sinus tarsi syndrome were randomly divided into three treatment groups: CLA, PRP, and ozone injections. Outcome measures were visual analog scale, American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society Ankle-Hindfoot Scale (AOFAS), Foot Function Index, and Foot and Ankle Outcome Score before injection compared with 1, 3, and 6 months after injection. RESULTS At the end of months 1, 3, and 6 after injection, significant improvements were observed in all three groups compared with baseline (P < .001 for all). At months 1 and 3, improvements in AOFAS scores were similar in the CLA and ozone groups; those in the PRP group were lower (P = .001 and P = .004, respectively). At month 1, improvements in Foot and Ankle Outcome Score were similar in the PRP and ozone groups and higher in the CLA group (P < .001). At 6-month follow-up, there were no significant differences in visual analog scale and Foot Function Index results among the groups (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS Ozone, CLA, or PRP injections could provide clinically significant functional improvement for at least 6 months in patients with sinus tarsi syndrome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Green synthesis is an efficient and eco-friendly method that has been used frequently in silver nanoparticle production in recent years. This method facilitates the production of nanoparticles using various organisms, such as plants, and is also cheaper and easier to apply than the other techniques. AIMS This study aims to find possible mechanisms and pharmacological effects of cubic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). OBJECTIVES This study characterizes cubic AgNPs and describes in detail their anticancer, antimicrobial, and anti- Trichomonas vaginalis abilities. METHODS Silver nanoparticles were produced by green synthesis using Juglans regia (walnut) leaf aqueous extract. We validated the formation of AgNPs by UV-vis spectroscopy, FTIR analysis, and SEM micrographs. To determine the pharmacological effects of the AgNPs, we conducted anti-cancer, anti-bacterial, and anti-parasitic activity experiments. RESULTS Cytotoxicity data revealed that AgNPs have cellular inhibitory properties on cancerous MCF7 (breast), HeLa (cervix), C6 (glioma), and HT29 (colorectal) cell lines. Similar results are also obtained with anti-bacterial and anti- Trichomonas vaginalis activity experiments. At certain concentrations, AgNPs displayed stronger anti-bacterial activities than the sulbactam/cefoperazone antibiotic combination in five bacteria species. Furthermore, the 12-h AgNPs treatment exhibited satisfactory anti-Trichomonas vaginalis activity similar to the FDA-approved metronidazole. CONCLUSION Consequently, AgNPs produced by the green synthesis method by Juglans regia leaves showed remarkable anti-carcinogenic, anti-bacterial, and anti-trichomonas vaginalis activities. We propose the potential usefulness of green synthesized AgNPs as therapeutics.

Abstract
AIM This study aims to provide in vitro experimental evidence that wild mushrooms have the potential to be used as a pharmaceutical that could be effective against various types of cancer. BACKGROUND Throughout human history, besides food, traditional medicine and natural poisons obtained from mushrooms have been used for the treatment of many diseases. Clearly, edible and medicinal mushroom preparations have beneficial health effects without the known severe adverse side effects. OBJECTIVES This study was designed to reveal the cell growth inhibitory potential of five different edible mushrooms and the biological activity of Lactarius zonarius was shown here for the first time. METHODS The mushrooms fruiting bodies were dried and powdered then extracted with hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol. The mushroom extracts were screened for possible antioxidant activities by the free radical scavenging activity (DPPH) method. Antiproliferative activity and cytotoxicity of the extracts were investigated in vitro on A549 (human lung carcinoma), HeLa (human cervix carcinoma), HT29 (human colon carcinoma), Hep3B (human hepatoma), MCF7 (human breast cancer), FL (human amnion cells), and Beas2B (normal human cells) cells lines by using MTT cell proliferation assay, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay, DNA degradation, TUNEL, and cell migration assay. RESULTS Using proliferation, cytotoxicity, DNA degradation, TUNEL, and migration assay, we displayed that hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol extracts of the Lactarius zonarius, Laetiporus sulphureus, Pholiota adiposa, Polyporus squamosus, and Ramaria flava were effective on the cells even so at low doses (< 45.0 - 99.6 µg/mL) by acting in a way that represses migration, as a negative inducer of apoptosis. It was also demonstrated that mushroom extracts with high antioxidant effect have within the acceptable cytotoxic activity of 20%-30% on the cell membrane at concentrations higher than 60 µg/mL. Overall, all of the mushroom extracts with high antioxidant effects had strong antiproliferative activity and low toxicity for cells. These findings, at least, highlight that these mushroom extracts can be used for the treatment of cancer disease, especially as a supportive therapy against colon, liver, and lung cancer.

Abstract
Biogenic nanocopper (BNC) agents exhibit strong anticancer, antimicrobial, and antiparasitic effects. Their fewer side effects to normal cells cause them to be preferred to treat various diseases. Metal nanoparticles, particularly copper nanoparticles, are attracting more significant interest as therapeutic agents with the improvement of green synthesis methods. Studies to reduce the side effects of copper nanoparticles to exhibit strong pharmacological properties are progressing intensively. Here, BNCs with reduced side effects were synthesized using L-ascorbic acid as the reducing agent and various concentrations of copper (II) chloride. BNCs exhibited significant pharmacological activity on cancer, bacteria, and Trichomonas vaginalis cells. The newly synthesized BNCs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscope, and Differential/Thermal Gravimetric Analysis. The pharmacological activity of BNCs was evaluated by obtaining their inhibitor concentration and minimum inhibitory concentrations against some cancer, bacteria, and T. vaginalis cells. Newly synthesized BNCs have various shapes such as cubic, spherical, or rod and particle size distribution between 70 and 100 nm. According to experiment results, the newly synthesized BNCs were a significantly antiproliferative, antibacterial, and anti-T. vaginalis effect on cells compared to the control drugs. These findings confirm newly synthesized BNCs and their in vitro pharmacological potential. Further research should be targeted on the preclinical study of absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion/toxicity (ADME/Tox) and in vivo effects on cancer and microbial pathogens.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Inflammation forms the basis of cancer development and progression. It causes changes in complete blood count parameters, such as neutrophil counts. Low albumin levels are associated with poor prognosis in cancer patients. We aimed to investigate the association between neutrophil to albumin ratio (NAR) and the stage of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). PATIENTS AND METHODS 257 NSCLC patients (24 females and 198 males) were included in the study. Patients were divided into two groups. Group 1 (n=61) included patients with early stage cancer (stage 1 and 2), while group 2 (n=196) included those with advanced stage cancer (stage 3 and 4). Demographic data, neutrophil, lymphocyte, platelet, white blood cell counts (WBC), C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), ferritin and albumin levels at the time of diagnosis were recorded. The NAR of 2 groups were compared. RESULTS There were no significant differences between the lymphocyte count (2.0 vs. 2.0 103/mm3) and platelet count (291 vs. 311 103/mm3) of the two groups (p > 0.05). ESR (38.8 vs. 57.5 mm/h), CRP (158 vs. 57 mg/l), ferritin (85 vs. 261 ng/ml), WBC count (8.6 vs. 10.6 103/mm3), neutrophil count (5.6 vs. 7.5 103/mm3), albumin values (2.9 vs. 3.7 gr/dl), and (p < 0.05) NAR levels (1.6 vs. 2.3) (p < 0.05) were significantly higher in group 2. CONCLUSIONS NAR can be used in predicting the stage of NSCLC.

Abstract
Functional outcome assessment for children with brachial plexus birth palsy (BPBP) is essential. We aimed to investigate the association between the Brachial Plexus Outcome Measure (BPOM) and the Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument (PODCI) in children with BPBP and healthy matched controls, and to explore upper-limb function and the discriminative properties of the two tests. Thirty children, aged 6-14 years, diagnosed with BPBP and undergoing shoulder tendon transfer and 20 age-matched healthy controls were included. In both groups, the Turkish version of the PODCI, used to evaluate daily living activities, was implemented. The Turkish version of the BPOM, specifically developed for BPBP, was applied in children with BPBP. Test results, demographic and clinical characteristics were recorded. The mean age of children with BPBP was 8.53 ± 2.53 years and their BPOM Activity scale score was 42.93 ± 8.28. The PODCI Upper Extremity Function score (74.97 ± 23.49 vs. 100) and the PODCI Global Functioning score (89.20 ± 7.73 vs. 99.36 ± 7.73) were significantly lower in the BPBP group (p < 0.01). While there was a significant and very strong relationship between the BPOM Activity and PODCI Global Functioning scores (r = 0.845; p = 0.037), no correlation was found between the BPOM Self-Evaluation scale and PODCI Global Functioning score (r = 0.456; p = -0.141). The PODCI correlated with the BPOM Activity scale, providing an appropriate alternative measurement for upper-limb function in children with BPBP after shoulder tendon transfer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to compare the radiological outcomes and rate of complication between single-stage and staged operation for the treatment of bilateral developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 100 patients (13 males, 87 females; mean age: 18.1±2.1 months; range, 12 to 36 months) with bilateral DDH who were older than 15 months of age and treated with open reduction (OR) or Pemberton pericapsular osteotomy (PPO) were retrospectively analyzed. Of the patients, 48 were operated with OR and 52 were operated with PPO. Improvements in acetabular indices, presence of avascular necrosis, radiological results, and other complications were noted. RESULTS There was no statistically significant difference in the preoperative acetabular indices, range of International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) classification, follow-up period, and age at the time of operation between the groups (p>0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the acetabular indices, rate of avascular necrosis, and radiological results at the end of 24 months of follow-up between the groups (p>0.05). CONCLUSION Our study results show no significant difference in the radiological outcomes and complications between simultaneous and staged surgeries for the treatment of bilateral DDH in children in the walking age.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to compare clinical and radiological results of three different techniques (plate-screw, tension band, and intramedullary nail) in the fixation of olecranon osteotomy in patients with intercondylar fracture of the distal humerus surgically treated by the olecranon osteotomy approach. METHODS Between January 2010 and December 2018, the study was initiated with 52 patients who underwent an olecranon osteotomy approach for an AO Type C distal humerus fracture. Thirty-seven patients (19 male, 18 female) who had regular control data and a final control examination were included in the study. In osteotomy fixation, we used tension band (K wire cerclage + Screw cerclage) in 20 patients, plate-screw in eight patients, and intramedullary nail fixation in nine patients. The functional evaluation included a measurement of the range of joint motion (flexion, extension, supination, pronation); MAYO elbow performance score; disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand (DASH) score; and comparative grip strength measurement, and a subjective pain assessment was performed using the visual analogue scale. RESULTS The mean duration of follow-up was 44 (12-84) months. The mean time to union was 14 (7-32) weeks in patients that achieved union. The mean DASH score was 22 (0-72.7), the meanMAYOelbow performance score was 84 (35-100), and the mean VAS score was 3 (1-7). The mean grip strength was 32 (8-64) kgw in the treated extremity and 37 (17-70) kgw in the intact extremity. No statistically significant difference was detected between olecranon osteotomy fixation methods (tension band, plate-screw osteosynthesis, and intramedullary nailing) in terms of union time, DASH score, MAYO scale score, VAS score, extension, supination, and pronation (P > 0.05). The average grip strength (kgw) was lower than that in the uninvolved extremity, and this ratio was statistically significant (P = 0.04). CONCLUSION The results of this study have shown that successful and comparable radiological and functional outcomes can be obtained by all the three different olecranon osteotomy techniques in the surgical treatment of intercondylar fracture of the distal humerus. Abstract
This study aimed to compare clinical and radiographical results of total or partial resection of the cross-bone in the management of children with cleft hand. Nine children with 10 cleft hands who underwent resection of the cross-bone were retrospectively identified and divided into two groups based on type of resection: Group T (total resection) including 5 children (5 affected hands; 3 boys; mean age = 3.5 (range, 2-5) years), and Group P (partial resection) including 4 children (5 affected hands; 3 boys; mean age = 3.2 (range, 2-5) years). Mean follow-up was 68 (range, 60-85) months in group T and 47 (range, 40-60) months in group P. To assess clinical status, postoperative cosmetic satisfaction was evaluated by asking the parents, and cosmetic appearance was rated using a visual analogue scale (VAS) at the follow-up. In the radiographical evaluation, change in cleft divergence following reconstruction was assessed as the metacarpal divergence angle between the index and the ring finger metacarpals. Overall, cosmetic satisfaction was rated "very satisfied" or "satisfied" in 7 of the 10 hands, and functional satisfaction as "very satisfied" or "satisfied" in all. Mean postoperative cosmetic aspect on VAS was 6.4 (range, 5-8) in group T, and 6.2 (range, 4-8) in group P (p = 0.99). Mean metacarpal divergence angle significantly decreased from 42.2° (range, 35-52°) and 40.2° (range, 36-46°) preoperatively to 21.2° (range, 15-35°) and 19.8° (range = 12-31°) at 3-year follow-up in groups T and P, respectively (p < 0.001 for each group). Both total and partial cross-bone resection provided satisfactory clinical and radiographical medium-term results for of children with cleft hand.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential side-effects of lead acetate (LA), which is toxic to the nerves, blood and muscles, in the rat brain. The neuroprotective effects of pomegranate juice (PJ) against LA exposure were also observed. The experiment involved 28 male Wistar albino rats aged 12 weeks. These were divided into four groups: Control, PJ, LA and LA+PJ. Stereological techniques were employed to determine hippocampal volume in each rat brain. Biochemical investigations and histopathological examinations were also performed. Analysis demonstrated a significant decrease in hippocampal volume in the LA group compared to the control group (p < .05). The stereology results also indicated that PJ has protective effects when compared with the LA and LA+PJ groups. A significant increase was also determined in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity in the LA group compared to the control group, in contrast to glutathione (GSH) levels and carboxylesterase (CaE) and acetylcholinesterase (AchE) activities. MDA and GST activity decreased significantly in the LA+PJ group compared to the LA group in contrast to GSH levels and CaE and AchE activities. Histopathological examination revealed a number of degenerative changes in the LA group. Exposure to LA adversely affects the hippocampus on the male rat brain. It might also be suggested that PJ may ameliorate these deleterious effects.

Abstract
In this work, due to the biological activity evaluation, a series of hydroxy methoxy benzoins (1-8), benzils (10-16) and methoxy benzoin/benzil-O-β-d-glucosides (17-28) were synthesized. Antioxidant (FRAP, CUPRAC, DPPH), antimicrobial (16 microorganisms, and two yeast), enzyme inhibition (α-amylase, α-glucosidase, AChE, BChE, and tyrosinase) of all synthesized benzoin/benzil analogs were investigated. Benzoins (1-8) showed the most effective antioxidant properties compared to all three methods. Compound 28 against α-amylase, compound 9 against α-glucosidase, compound 11 against AChE, compound 2 against BChE, and compound 13 against tyrosinase showed the best activities with the better or similar IC50 values as used standards. Hydroxy methoxy benzoin compounds (1-8) among all four groups were seen as the most effective against the tested microorganism. Molecular docking analysis showed that all tested compounds 1-28 (0.01-2.22 µM) had the best binding affinity against AChE enzyme. Cytotoxic effects of the many of compounds (1-16, 21, and 24) also investigated and it was found that they caused different effects in different cells. The LDH tests of compounds 1a + b, 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 21, and 24, seemed to be effective compared to the positive control cisplatin. The cytotoxicity of compounds 6 (9.24%) for MCF7 cancer cells, 8 (5.16%) and 4 (8.26%) for HT29 cancer cells, 24 (9.84%) for Hep3B cells and 8 (8.52%), 7 (5.70%), 4 (6.94) and 9 (7.22%) for C6 cells were at normal values. And also cytotoxic activity of four compounds (5, 9, 21, and 24) among the all synthetic groups, were evaluated to the HeLa and RPE. Compound 5 showed anticancer activity on HeLa and RPE cancer cells as much as or better than cisplatin which was used as standard.

Abstract
Osteosarcoma has a poor prognosis and survival rate due to inadequate chemotherapy, high recurrence ability, high metastasis potential, and almost no radiotherapy being applied. One of the strategies to solve these problems is to develop the pharmacologically active plant metabolite, amygdalin, in combination therapeutic systems. In this project, the antiproliferative effects of amygdalin alone and in binary or ternary combinations with some anticancer drugs (cisplatin, 5-fluorouracil, oxaliplatin, and camptothecin), antiparasitic drugs (metronidazole and miltefosine), and an antigout drug (colchicine) were examined using human bone osteosarcoma cell lines (MG-63 and Saos2), the chondrosarcoma cell line (SW1353), and the normal human cell line (FL). Known half-maximal inhibitory concentration values of the drugs were taken into consideration, and the recommended combination ratios were used in the Chou-Talalay method. The strong synergistic effect commonly seen in the combination of amygdalin with miltefosine, metronidazole, camptothecin, colchicine, oxaliplatin, 5-fluorouracil, and cisplatin dual drug indicates that these combinations can be used in cancer treatment. The synergistic effect caused by amygdalin decreases toxicity by increasing drug yield. However, amygdalin antagonism seen in several combinations may prevent these pairs from being used together. In combination with antagonistic effects, it may be preferable to use amygdalin alone as it generally causes strong antiproliferative effects. Besides, there is a more potent synergism between amygdalin and triple drug combinations. Overall, these results emphasize that amygdalin combinations in treatment of bone cancer are significant.

Abstract
Melatonin improves fracture healing, but the long-term use of melatonin seems impracticable in the treatment of fracture due to side effects caused by hormonal stress on chronological rhythm. Ramelteon (RAMEL) and agomelatine (AGO) are non-selective peripheral melatonin receptor (MT) agonists. This study investigated the effects on bone fracture healing of these MT agonists, which do not affect the central nervous system. The rats were divided into 6 groups, including Group 1 (SHAM): sham operated group; Group 2 (FRACTURE): femoral fracture control; Group 3 (FR + AGO30): femoral fracture + agomelatine 30 mg/kg; Group 4 (FR + AGO60): femoral fracture + agomelatine 60 mg/kg; Group 5 (FR + RAMEL3): femoral fracture + ramelteon 3 mg/kg; and Group 6 (FR + RAMEL6): femoral fracture + ramelteon 6 mg/kg. After 21 days, the rats were subjected to X-ray imaging. Bone healing was evaluated with hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. Messenger RNA (mRNA) expressions of bone formation markers, such as bone alkaline phosphatase (ALP), osteocalcin (OC), and osteopontin (OP), were evaluated by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and with immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining. The radiographic fracture healing scores were statistically significantly higher in the FR + AGO60 group and the FR + RAMEL3 group than in the FRACTURE group. The histopathology and molecular results supported the radiographic results. It was shown that agomelatine and ramelteon increase bone fracture healing, leading to the conclusion that a preference for agomelatine, an antidepressant, and ramelteon, a sleep aid, will increase bone fracture healing in patients with fractures.

Abstract
Over the last decade, electrolyzed water (EW) produced by salt and tap water has gained importance due to its antimicrobial effects. Regarding to chlorine-based compounds, EW also used in post-harvest safety of food processing and sterilization of surfaces. The latest studies suggested that EW might act as wound healing agent due to anti-infective and cell proliferative properties. In this study, we evaluated acute contact cytotoxicity in L929 mice fibroblast cells and wound healing activity of EWs in vitro. In addition, mutagenic activity was evaluated by Ames test with and without metabolic activation by S9 fraction and the stability profile of freshly prepared EWs has been followed up. According to the results, strong acid (StAEW) and mixed EW (MEW) showed dose-dependent cytotoxicity due to possible high HOCl concentration, while slightly acidic and catholyte EW (CEW) were not cytotoxic even applied directly for 30 sec. Further, StAEW and CEW showed a significant increase in L929 cell migration in scratch assay. Likewise, with/ without metabolic activation, neither of EWs had shown mutagenic profile in TA 98 and TA100 strains of Salmonella typhimurium. Follow-up of ORP (oxidation-reduction potential), pH and FCC (free chlorine concentration) showed that temperature and light were important storage conditions to maintain a stable profile particularly for ORP and FCC, which are the most important indicators for biological activity of EW. According to the present findings, it can be suggested that particularly StAEW, may represent a valuable wound healing agent with an achievable, economical and easy production system when stored under proper conditions.

Abstract
Four new dicyanoargentate(I)-based complexes 1-4 were synthesized from certain metal ions with a tetradentate ligand [N, N-bis (2-hydroxyethyl) -ethylenediamine; N-bishydeten] and determined by diverse procedures (elemental, thermal, FT-IR, ESI-MS for 1-3 and, magnetic susceptibility and EPR for 1, and 2) including crystal analysis of 4. The crystal method revealed that complex 4 has a sandwich-type like polymeric chemical structure with layers formed by [Cd(N-bishydeten)2]2+ cations and [Ag(CN)2]- anions. The complexes were further characterized by fluorescence and UV spectroscopy to determine their physicochemical features. The complexes displayed a DNA binding activity within the same range as found for cisplatin, in addition to their strong stability in the presence of the physiological buffer system. The complexes were also investigated for pharmacological properties like interaction with DNA/Bovine serum albumin, anticancer and antibacterial activities. Physicochemical studies of DNA with the complexes suggested that the interaction mode between them are possibly both intercalative and groove binding types. These spectroscopic measurements also show that there may be a binding tendency between BSA and the complexes via hydrogen or Van der Waals bonds. The viability tests demonstrated that all the complexes exhibited antibacterial (1-4) and anticancer effects (2-4) toward ten diverse bacterial strains and three tumor cells (HT-29 colon adenocarcinoma, HeLa cervical cancer, and C6 glioma), respectively.

Abstract
The cross-section calculation systematics for nuclear reactions have great importance in describing the particle-induced excitation of nuclei. In this study, for 14-15 MeV of incident neutron energy, it has been suggested new empirical formulae to describe the (n, 2p) reactions cross sections. The new empirical formulae have been obtained for 29≤A≤159, 29≤A≤103 and 133≤A≤159 mass ranges which are dependent on s=(N-Z)/A asymmetry parameter. The asymmetry parameters have been obtained by modifying the original Levkovski formula. Then, EXFOR data has been studied by applying the least square fitting method and (n, 2p) reactions systematics has been revealed. The statistical dependence (R2) of these data was examined in the 29≤A≤159 total mass range. The calculated results from the obtained formulae have been compared with the literature data. The predictions of our formulae are in good agreement with the EXFOR data for 29≤A≤159 and 29≤A≤103 mass range.

Abstract
Objective Open reduction (OR) alone and OR plus Pemberton periacetabular osteotomy (PPO) techniques are commonly used in the treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip at walking age. However, discussions on the timing of acetabular osteotomy are still ongoing. The aim of the present study was to compare the results of patients who underwent Ferguson OR (FOR group) and OR plus PPO group. Materials and Methods Between 2008 and 2017, we performed surgery on the hips, which we thought were used for closed reduction but could not be reduced as closed, or that the reduction was not stable. Patient follow-up was ≥12 months. The study included 75 hips of 57 patients of which 20 (26.7%) patients with FOR and 55 (73.3%) patients with PPO. Preoperative and postoperative acetabular indices (AIs), additional surgical intervention rates, and avascular necrosis (AVN) rates were compared. The Kalamchi-McEwen classification system was used to evaluate AVN. Results The average age of the patients was 12.38 (9-14) months. The mean follow-up period was 38.95 (12-140) months. AVN developed in 21 (24%) hips (6 (8%) type 1, 13 (17.3%) type 2, and 2 (2.7%) type 3). AVN developed in 7 (35%) hips in the FOR group and 14 (25.5%) hips in the PPO group. No statistically significant difference was found between the two groups (p=0.416). Revision surgery was performed in 2 (3.7%) cases of the PPO group and 6 (31.5%) cases of the FOR group. Statistically, the PPO group had less revision surgery (p=0.004). The PPO group had an AI of 13.33° (5°-27°) that was significantly lower (p<0.001) than that of 27.98° (18.39°) of the FOR group. Conclusion Ferguson and Pemberton techniques are current and effective in the treatment of patients with developmental hip dysplasia at walking age. There was no significant difference between the two groups when examined from the point of view of AVN, but the results of PPO surgery were found to be better with respect to AI and revision surgery.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In this study, the authors aimed to research the histopathologic effects of intraurethral use of dexpanthenol for hypospadias repair. Dexpanthenol is a derivative of pantothenic acid, a B complex vitamin. Pantothenic acid is a molecule contributing in the structure of coenzyme A. It decreases the release of myeloperoxidase from granulocytes and inhibits the formation of free oxygen radicals, and it exhibits an anti-inflammatory effect by increasing mitotic activity. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to evaluate the use of dexpanthenol after a tubularized incised plate urethroplasty (TIP) on wound healing, inflammation, and fibrosis. STUDY DESIGN In this study, 18 healthy male New Zealand white rabbits weighing 2500-3000 g were used. The 18 rabbits were randomly divided into 3 groups. For the hypospadias model, rabbits had a urethral catheter inserted in the urethra and a ventral midline incision was made from the glans tip to the central line of the penis. Afterward, the incision was closed with Vicryl (7/0) using the continuous suture technique, and urethroplasty was completed. For fourteen days, group I had 0.9% saline solution administered intraurethrally twice per day with a 22G catheter sleeve (control group), group II had one dose of 500 mg/kg dexpanthenol (Bepanthene®; Bayer Turk Chemical Industry Limited Company, Turkey) ampoule and one dose of saline solution administered in the same way, and group III had two doses of 500 mg/kg dexpanthenol ampoule administered. On the fifteenth day, the penis was degloved and rabbits had penectomy performed with samples sent to the pathology department for histopathological assessment. RESULTS The degree of fibrosis and inflammation in group I (control group) was more severe than groups II and III. The differences between groups I and II were statistically significantly different for both fibrosis and inflammation (P = 0.018 and P = 0.041, respectively). The differences between groups I and III were also statistically significantly different for both fibrosis and inflammation (P = 0.019 and P = 0.011, respectively). Groups II and III were not different significantly for fibrosis and inflammation (P > 0.05). DISCUSSION This study shows that intraurethral dexpanthenol application has positive effects on fibrosis and inflammation. The main limitations of the study are that the hypospadias model was created surgically and long-term follow-up for fistula formation was not assessed. CONCLUSIONS Administration of intraurethral dexpanthenol after hypospadias repair has positive effects on fibrosis and inflammation.

Abstract
Electrolyzed water (EW) is a widely used disinfectant agent with high oxidation–reduction potential (ORP). Although EW has been used in many areas, such as food hygiene, agriculture, and animal husbandry, the studies presented in the literature are not enough to clarify the toxic effects of EW. The aim of this study is, therefore, to produce EWs at different pH, ORP, and chlorine concentrations and to assess their safety in terms of toxicology. At the beginning of the study, the antimicrobial activity of the EW types with respect to bacteria and fungus was investigated. EWs below pH 7 were all effective in inactivating Enterococcus hirae, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans completely. In vitro studies of cell cultures revealed that different concentrations of EWs were not cytotoxic for the L929 cells under 10- to 80-fold dilutions. In addition, it has been determined that produced EWs did not have irritation potential, according to the in vitro EpiDerm™, reconstituted skin irritation test in the frames of biocompatibility tests. For the mucous membrane irritation test, the hen’s egg test-chorioallantoic membrane experiment was performed, and EWs were found to have no eye irritation. In conclusion, it has been shown that produced EWs with antimicrobial efficacy were found to be safe for skin and eye according to in vitro biocompatibility study studies. Thus, the establishment of a technological infrastructure for the EW production and the use of produced EW as an effective disinfectant in the food, medical, and agricultural areas should be encouraged.

Abstract
A series of new 2,4,6-trisubstituted pyrimidines and their N-alkyl bromide derivatives were prepared based upon methoxy substituted azachalcones as the starting materials. All newly synthesized compounds were screened for their anti-proliferative, cytotoxic, antibacterial activities and DNA/protein binding affinity. In vitro cell proliferation inhibitory and cell cytotoxic effects of 2,4,6-trisubstituted pyrimidines (1-9) and their N-alkyl bromide derivatives (2a-c, 3a-c,5a-c,6a-c, 8a-c, 9a-c) were obtained with the help of the 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) cell proliferation, LDH cytotoxicity detection, and microdilution assays. The antimicrobial activity for these compounds was also evaluated following the European Pharmacopoeia 8.0 protocol. The interactions of these compounds with DNA or bovine serum albumin were investigated by the spectrophotometric titration method. When the cytotoxic analysis and anticancer properties of the compounds were examined, most of the compounds significantly exhibited an anti-proliferative potency on cancer cells (IC50 ∼ 2-10 µg/mL) and caused a cytotoxic effect as low as control drugs, 5-fluorouracil, and cisplatin (∼7-15%). Because the compound-DNA adducts are hyperchromic or hypochromic, they caused variations in their spectra. This situation shows they can be linked to DNA by the groove binding mode at a binding constant range of 2.0 × 104 and 2.4 × 105 M-1. The antimicrobial screening results revealed that our new compounds for some human Gram(+) and Gram(-) pathogen bacteria showed remarkable activity with MIC values between <7.81 and 125 µg/mL. Overall, incorporation of alkyl chain to pyrimidines in the generation of N-alkyl bromides has resulted in showing differences in DNA/protein binding affinity, along with anti-proliferative and cytotoxic activity in favor of new compounds.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We compared the union and functional results of intramedullary nailing and open reduction internal fixation treatment applied to adults with a forearm diaphysis fracture (fracture of the radius and/or ulna). METHODS We retrospectively examined 90 patients with completed skeletal maturation who were surgically treated for a forearm diaphyseal fracture. Patients with a Monteggia Galeazzi and ipsilateral upper extremity fracture and those with an open epiphyseal line, Type 3 open fracture, pathological fracture, or brain trauma were excluded from the study. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) was applied to 42 patients (plate group), and intramedullary nailing was performed in 48 patients (intramedullary nailing group). Both treatment groups were compared with respect to time to union, joint range of motion, operating time, grip strength, Grace-Eversman criteria, and complications. RESULTS The mean operating time was 63.29 (range, 40-100) min in the plate group and 46.02 (range, 17-85) min in the intramedullary nailing group. The mean time to union was 13.19 (range, 10-20) and 10.85 (range, 8-20) weeks, respectively. While a statistically significant difference was determined between groups with respect to operating time and time to union, no difference was determined in the Grace-Eversman evaluation criteria, forearm supination, pronation degrees, and grip strength. CONCLUSION The results of this study showed a significant difference in the intramedullary nailing treatment with respect to time to union, operating time, and amount of bleeding compared with the ORIF treatment. However, no difference was determined in the functional evaluation criteria. Thus, both treatment methods are acceptable in the treatment of forearm diaphyseal fractures in adults with skeletal maturation.

Abstract
Summary
Aim: The benefit of preoperative gamma probe in the diagnosis of adenoma in patients with histopathologically proven parathyroid (PT) adenomas was examined. Patients, material, methods: 20 patients with positive 99mTc MIBI uptake in PT scintigraphy with primary hyper-parathyroidism were enrolled in this study. 740 MBq 99mTc MIBI were injected 3 h before operation. Counts of four PT regions were obtained with gamma probe before surgery in the operation room. All suspected PT adenomas were resected and histopathologically diagnosed as adenomas. We also obtained counts of the resection region and the resected adenoma with gamma probe after the parathyroidectomy. Preoperative counts of adenoma bearing regions (ABR), non-adenoma bearing regions (NABR), postoperative resection region (PRR), resected adenoma counts (RA) were registered. Statistical analysis was performed by Wilcoxon rank test. Results: The mean counts of ABR, NABR, the PRR and RA were 462 ± 106, 230 ± 66, 164 ± 42, 374 ± 87, respectively. The mean counts from ABR were twofold higher than those of NABR. The PRR mean counts decreased by 64% when compared to the mean counts of ABR and by 55% when compared to the mean counts of RA. The differences in mean counts of ABR and NABR, PRR and ABR, PRR and RA (p <0.01) turned out as statistically significant. Discussion: According to our preliminary results, the region with the highest counts is at least 2 ± 0,4 times higher than the mean of the other three PT regions. Thus, it seems to be significant for PT adenoma. Resection of adenoma may be accepted as successful, if the count of ABR decreased more than 64% with decreased postoperative parathormone levels. Conclusion: This technique should not yet be applied instead of parathormone measurement or frozen technique. But it may replace the frozen technique used for confirmation of the diagnosis during the operation in the future.

Abstract
Four compounds -two (2 and 3) completely new- of composition [Ni(edbea)Ag3(CN)5] (1), [Cu(edbea)Ag2(CN)4]·H2O (2), [Cd(edbea)Ag3(CN)5]·H2O (3) and [Cd(edbea)2] [Ag(CN)2]2·H2O (4) {edbea; 2,2'-(ethylenedioxy)bis (ethylamine)}, were synthesized and characterized using elemental, FT-IR, X-Ray (4), thermal, variable temperature magnetic measurement (1 and 2) and biological techniques. The DNA/BSA binding affinities of 2 and 3 were evaluated by UV-Vis spectrophotometric titrations, ethidium bromide exchange experiments and electrophoretic mobility measurements. Compounds 1 and 4 have previously been characterized and shown to reduce the proliferation and migration of tumor cells. For the sake of clarity, 1 precise mechanism of action on microbial organisms and temperature magnetic measurement were determined. The crystallographic analyses showed that 4 was built up of [Cd(edbea)2]II cations and [Ag2(CN)4]II anions. Complexes demonstrated a remarkable antibacterial (1-4), antifungal (1-4) and antiproliferative activities (2 and 3) to ten human bacterial pathogens, four plant pathogenic fungi or three tumor cells (HeLa, HT29, and C6), respectively. Therefore, our results strongly confirm that cell proliferation, cell morphology, Bcl-2, P53 changes and apoptosis can be related to the pharmacological effects of the complexes as suitable candidate for clinical trials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rufinamide is a novel antiepileptic drug used as adjunctive therapy in patients with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and provides seizure control especially in tonic and atonic seizures. Rufinamide is expected to be effective in intractable epilepsy when atonic and tonic seizures exist. However, rufinamide induced seizure aggravation has been reported in a few patients, which was not associated with a specific type of seizure. CASE A 12-year-old boy with intractable epilepsy had tonic and atonic seizures despite treatment with valproic acid (3000mg/day), levetiracetam (3000mg/day) and clobazam (40mg/day). Rufinamide was administered as adjuvant therapy. After 2weeks on rufinamide, he experienced atonic seizure worsening, and the frequency of epileptic discharges increased. The deterioration in seizure frequency and epileptiform discharges resolved when rufinamide was discontinued. CONCLUSION Rufinamide may aggravate atonic seizures in patients with intractable epilepsy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of the present study was to evaluate functional and cosmetic outcomes of adult patients who underwent intramedullary nailing with newly designed intramedullary radius nails for isolated radius diaphyseal fractures. METHODS Seventeen adult patients who had undergone intramedullary nailing for radius diaphyseal fractures were retrospectively evaluated. Patients with isolated radius diaphyseal closed fractures were included. Closed reduction was achieved in all patients. Wrist and elbow ranges of movement were calculated at final follow-up. Grip strength was calculated using a hydraulic hand dynamometer. Maximum radial bowing (MRB) and maximum radial bowing localization (MRBL) were calculated for treated and uninjured arms. Functional evaluation was performed using Grace-Eversman evaluation criteria and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) questionnaire score. RESULTS Of the 17 patients with isolated radius diaphyseal fractures evaluated, 11 (64.7%) were male and 6 (35.3%) were female, with a mean age of 35.76 years (range: 23-61 years). Fractures were right-sided in 11 (64.7%) and left-sided in 6 (35.3%) patients. Mean time to bone union was 10.2 weeks (range: 8-20 weeks). Mean supination was 75.35º (range: 67º-80º), pronation was 85.18º (range: 74º-90º). According to Grace-Eversman evaluation criteria, results were excellent in 16 (94%) and good in 1 (6%) patient. Mean DASH score was 12.58 (3.3-32.5). CONCLUSION The gold-standard treatment of adult isolated radius diaphyseal fractures is plate and screw osteosynthesis. However, intramedullary nailing of isolated radius fractures is a good alternative treatment method, with excellent functional results and union rates similar to those of plate and screw osteosynthesis.

Abstract
Because of the strong association between uremia and atherosclerosis, incidence of aortic aneurysms is increasing among renal failure patients awaiting renal transplantation (RT). Successful RTs have been performed in these patients after surgical repair of the aneurysms. Since Parodi et al introduced endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR) in patients with high risk for conventional surgery, a new era has begun. The 1st successful RT after EVAR was published in 2001. Herein we report the 1st successful RT after thoracic EVAR (TEVAR) reported to date. We performed RT in a 54-year-old man with end-stage renal failure due to diabetic nephropathy, who had undergone TEVAR for type B aortic dissection (TBAD) 6 months earlier. The postoperative period was uneventful and the patient was discharged from the hospital at postoperative day 6 with a serum creatinine of 0.9 mg/dL. At follow-up examination at postoperative 6 months, graft function was stable. Because of its advantages over open surgery, including low mortality and morbidity, TEVAR is becoming more common among renal failure patients with thoracic aortic aneurysms and TBAD. Our case shows that successful RT can be performed in renal failure patients who have undergone TEVAR.

Abstract
As vascular diseases are becoming more prevalent among renal transplant recipients, complications related to renal artery anastomosis are likely to occur more often. Here we report a renal transplant patient treated with femoro-femoral bypass who had renal allograft dysfunction due to aorto-iliac occlusive disease (AIOD) proximal to renal artery anastomosis. We performed living donor renal transplantation in the left iliac fossa of a 41-year-old male. At post-transplant 30 months, he was admitted with hypertension, increase in serum creatinine, and claudication of his left leg. Doppler ultrasonography showed poor flow characteristics of the renal allograft. Total occlusion of the left common iliac artery was diagnosed on angiography. Since endovascular approach was unsuccessful, we performed right-to-left femoro-femoral bypass to provide retrograde blood flow to the renal allograft. The patient was discharged at postoperative day 3 with decreased serum creatinine, normal blood pressure, no claudication, and normal flow characteristics in Doppler ultrasonography. AIOD should be suspected in renal transplant patients in case of hypertension, allograft dysfunction, and ipsilateral leg ischemia. Femoro-femoral bypass is a safe surgical procedure that may be performed in patients who cannot be treated using an endovascular approach.
