Abstract
Objective: To observe the biocompatibility of porcine omental derived extracellular matrix (ECM) hydrogel with human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) and the feasibility of ECM hydrogel as a delivery vector of cell transplantation. Methods: A series of chemical, physical and enzymatic methods were applied to acellularize the porcine omentum. Subsequently, the extracted ECM was prepared into thermosensitive hydrogel. The biochemical composition of the hydrogel was identified by histological staining. The microstructure was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The hydrogel was then injected into the myocardium of mice to observe its in situ gelation ability. Differentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cells into cardiomyocytes was achieved by small molecule induction, and then the obtained hiPSC-CMs were cultured. hiPSC-CMs cultured onto the prepared hydrogel were defined as the hydrogel group, while conventionally cultured hiPSC-CMs were defined as the control group. Cardiomyocyte viability and growth patterns were detected using live/dead staining, CCK-8 and phalloidin staining. Immunofluorescence staining and Western blot of cardiomyocytes were used to determine the survival and phenotypic maintenance markers of cardiomyocytes in materials. Results: The results of HE staining, oil red O staining and DAPI fluorescence staining showed that there was no significant cell debris, nucleus and lipid residue in the prepared ECM hydrogel. The Sirius red staining and Alcian blue staining showed that the hydrogel retained collagen and glycolaminoglycan, which were the main components of ECM. The prepared hydrogel behaves as a viscous liquid at 4 ℃ and as a gel state at 37 ℃. Scanning electron microscope results showed that the microstructure of the hydrogel was composed of irregular fibers and pores of different sizes. Under the guidance of ultrasound, the prepared ECM hydrogel could be successfully injected into the myocardium of mice. Immediately after the injection, the hyperechoic signal could be observed under ultrasound, suggesting that the hydrogel remained in the myocardium. HE staining of myocardial tissue evidenced that there was lump of gel in the injection area. The differentiated hiPSC-CMs were co-cultured with the prepared ECM hydrogel, and the results of live/dead staining showed that most of the hiPSC-CMs in the hydrogel group and the control group were alive, dead cells were scanty. The results of CCK-8 test showed that the absorbance values of the two groups were similar (P>0.05). The results of phalloidin staining showed that hiPSC-CMs could extend normally when co-cultured with ECM hydrogel. The cell morphology of the hydrogel group was similar with that of the control group, and there was no statistically significant difference in the F-actin coverage area per cell between the two groups (P>0.05). Immunofluorescence staining of cardiomyocyte markers showed that there was no significant difference in the coverage area of α-actinin and connexin-43 (Cx-43) per field between the hydrogel group and the control group (both P>0.05), the quantitative results of DAPI staining showed that there was no statistically significant difference in the number of cells between the two groups (P>0.05). Meanwhile, the results of Western blot showed that the expression levels of α-actinin and Cx-43 in cardiomyocytes in the hydrogel group were similar as those in the control group (both P>0.05). Conclusions: These results show that preparation of the ECM hydrogel from porcine omentum is successful. The hydrogel has good biocompatibility and no obvious cytotoxicity. Besides, the hydrogel can support the survival of hiPSC-CMs in vitro and maintain its phenotype. These properties make it a promising injectable cardiac tissue engineering material.

Abstract
Studies of schizophrenia at drug-naive state and on antipsychotic medication have reported a number of regions of gray-matter (GM) abnormalities but the reports have been inconsistent. The aim of this study was to conduct multimodal meta-analysis to compare the cross-sectional voxel-based morphometry studies of brain GM in antipsychotic-naive first-episode schizophrenia (AN-FES) and those with antipsychotic treatment within 1 year (AT-FES) to determine the similarities and differences in these groups. We conducted two separate meta-analyses containing 24 studies with a sample size of 801 patients and 957 healthy controls. A multimodal meta-analysis method was used to compare the findings between AN-FES and AT-FES. Meta-regression analyses were done to determine the influence of different variables including age, duration of illness, and positive and negative symptom scores. Finally, jack-knife analyses were done to test the robustness of the results. AN-FES and AT-FES showed common patterns of GM abnormalities in frontal (gyrus rectus), superior temporal, left hippocampal and insular cortex. GM in the left supramarginal gyrus and left middle temporal gyrus were found to be increased in AN-FES but decreased in AT-FES, whereas left median cingulate/paracingulate gyri and right hippocampus GM was decreased in AN-FES but increased in AT-FES. Findings suggest that both AN-FES and AT-FES share frontal, temporal and insular regions as common anatomical regions to be affected indicating these to be the primary regions of GM abnormalities in both groups.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the associations between osteocalcin (Ocn) and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). It was revealed that both total Ocn and undercarboxylated Ocn (unOcn) were negatively related with FPG and HbA1c, and the association of unOcn with FPG was more pronounced in men. INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to investigate the strength of associations between Ocn and FPG and HbA1c using a meta-analysis approach. METHODS A search was carried out using the databases of PubMed, ISI Web of Science, and the Cochrane library from 2007 to 2014 to identify related studies. A pooled effect size with 95 % confidence intervals (CI) was derived. RESULTS The meta-analysis included 39 studies involving 23,381 participants. The overall correlation was -0.16 (95 % CI, -0.19 to -0.14) between total Ocn (tOcn) and FPG and -0.15 (95 % CI, -0.20 to -0.11) between undercarboxylated Ocn (unOcn) and FPG. In the analysis of the association between Ocn and HbA1c, the pooled correlation was -0.16 (95 % CI, -0.18 to -0.14) for tOcn and -0.16 (95 % CI, -0.23 to -0.08) for unOcn. The magnitude of the correlation between unOcn and FPG is significantly higher in men than in women (r = -0.18, 95 % CI, -0.21 to -0.14; r = -0.09, 95 % CI, -0. 13 to -0.05, respectively; P for interaction < 0.05). Similar trend was also found between unOcn and HbA1c but without significance (for men, r = -0.19, 95 % CI, -0.24 to -0.14; for women, r = -0.09, 95 % CI, -0.22 to 0.04, respectively; P for interaction > 0.05). No indication of significant publication bias was found in any method. CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis demonstrated that both unOcn and tOcn were similarly and negatively correlated with FPG and HbA1c in humans. The negative correlations between unOcn and glucose metabolism appear to be more pronounced in men than in women.

Abstract
Colesevelam improves glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes when added to existing metformin-, sulfonylurea-, or insulin-based regimens. We evaluated colesevelam's effects in subjects on stable pioglitazone-based therapy. This 24-week multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study enrolled adults with type 2 diabetes who had suboptimal glycemic control [HbA1c ≥ 58 mmol/mol (7.5%) and ≤ 80 mmol/mol (9.5%)] on pioglitazone (30 or 45 mg) with or without 1-2 other oral antidiabetes medications. Subjects were randomized to colesevelam 3.8 g/day (n = 280) or placebo (n = 282) added to existing pioglitazone-based therapy. Primary efficacy variable was mean change in HbA1c from baseline to Week 24. Secondary variables included safety and tolerability, fasting plasma glucose changes, glycemic responses, and lipid profile. Tertiary variables included lipid particle profile changes by nuclear magnetic resonance. Colesevelam decreased HbA1c [least-squares mean treatment difference, - 3.5 mmol/mol (- 0.32%); p < 0.001] and fasting plasma glucose (- 14.7 mg/dl; p<0.001) vs. placebo at Week 24. More subjects receiving colesevelam vs. placebo achieved HbA1c reduction ≥ 7.7 mmol/mol (0.7%) (40% vs. 25%; p<0.001) or HbA1c < 53 mmol/mol (7.0%) (21% vs. 13%; p = 0.012). Colesevelam also decreased total cholesterol (mean treatment difference, - 6.5%), LDL-cholesterol (- 16.4%), non-HDL-cholesterol (- 9.8%), apolipoprotein B (- 8.8%), and total LDL particle concentration, and increased apolipoprotein A1 (+3.4%) and triglycerides (median treatment difference, + 11.3%) vs. placebo (all p < 0.001). There were no serious drug-related adverse events, and the majority of adverse events were mild or moderate. In subjects with type 2 diabetes inadequately controlled with pioglitazone-based therapy, add-on colesevelam therapy improved glycemic control and lipid parameters and was well tolerated. Abstract
Abstract
Roll to roll (R2R) UV micro-imprinting lithography was investigated by both experimental and numerical methods. A maximum imprinting velocity without bubble defects was found through experiments and numerical simulations. This velocity changes while the imprinting processes were conducted without cleaning the imprinting roll. The processes of resin filling into patterned cavities were simulated at various resin viscosities, contact angles of resin on substrate and on the roller. The predicted velocity showed a good agreement with experimental measurement. The results indicated that a larger imprinting velocity can be used with lower viscosity resin. It also showed that bubble trapping was affected by the contact angles between resin and mold (substrate). Finally, the influences of pattern aspect ratio in the filling processes were also studied.

Abstract
Colesevelam has shown efficacy in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in combination with metformin-, sulfonylurea-, or insulin-based therapy, lowering hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. A study was conducted to evaluate colesevelam as monotherapy in drug-naïve patients with T2DM. In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study, adults with T2DM who had inadequate glycemic control (HbA1c ≥7.5% and ≤9.5%) with diet and exercise alone were randomized to receive colesevelam 3.75 g/day (n=176) or placebo (n=181) for 24 weeks. The primary efficacy variable was HbA1c at week 24. Colesevelam as compared to placebo showed significant reductions from baseline in HbA1c (-2.92 mmol/mol [0.3%]; p=0.01) and fasting plasma glucose (-10.3 mg/dl; p=0.04) at week 24 with last observation carried forward. Colesevelam also significantly reduced low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (-11.2%; p<0.0001), total cholesterol (-5.1%; p=0.0005), non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (-7.4%; p=0.0001), and apolipoprotein B (-6.5%; p=0.0001) and increased apolipoprotein A-I (+ 2.4%; p=0.04), and triglycerides (+ 9.7%; p=0.03). Colesevelam monotherapy resulted in statistically significant improvements in glycemic and most lipid parameters in subjects with type 2 diabetes, with no new or unexpected safety and tolerability issues. Modest reductions in HbA1c and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels with colesevelam further support its use in combination with other antidiabetes agents when treatment targets for these parameters are close but are not quite achieved.ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT00789737.

Abstract
The optimal degrading conditions for the nicosulfuron degradation by Bacillus subtilis YB1 and Aspergillus niger YF1, and site of their action on nicosulfuron were studied. The results showed that the degradation efficiency of free cells of B. subtilis YB1 and A. niger YF1 was respectively 87.9 and 98.8% in basic medium III containing 2 mg/l of nicosulfuron after inoculation with 1 ml of culture containing 2.3 x 10(7) CFU ml(-1) and incubation for 5 days at 35 degrees C. Moreover, the degradation rate of nicosulfuron by the mixture of microorganisms was much higher than for every of them taken separately in the same conditions. The mass spectrometric analysis of the products degraded by B. subtilis YB1 revealed that the sulfonylurea bridge in nicosulfuron molecule had been broken. Extracellular (EXF) and endocellular (ENF) fractions obtained from bacterium and fungus were tested for the ability to degrade nicosulfuron. The degradation efficiency of fractions extracted from B. subtilis YBI was 66.8% by EXF and 15.8% by ENF, but neither EXF nor ENF extracted from A. niger YFI had the activity of degrading nicosulfuron.

Abstract
A total of 255 corn samples collected in 2010 from three main corn production provinces of China (Liaoning, Shandong, and Henan) were analyzed for contamination with fumonisins (FB(1) and FB(2)). The incidence of contamination was significantly higher in samples from Liaoning than in samples from the other two provinces. Approximately 80.0% of the samples from Liaoning were contaminated with fumonisins, with a mean total fumonisin concentration of 3,990 ng/g. In contrast, the mean total fumonisin concentrations were 845 and 665 ng/g in samples from Shandong and Henan, respectively. The probable daily intake of fumonisins (0.3 μg/kg of body weight) is within the provisional maximum tolerable daily intake of 2.0 μg/kg of body weight set by the Joint Food and Agriculture Organization and World Health Organization Expert Committee on Food Additives.

Abstract
This paper analyzes the relationship between the residual frame and the previous frame in motion-compensated video coding. It is found that the variance of the residual signal depends on the gradient magnitude. On average, the variance of the residual signal is larger for pixels with larger gradient magnitude. Two applications of this analysis are presented. In the first one, the relationship between the residual signal variance and the gradient magnitude is used to model the second-order statistics of the residual field in a nonstationary way. This modeling enables more efficient residual signal coding. The other application is for pixel decimation-based fast block matching. It is proposed that pixels with the largest gradient magnitude in a block be chosen to participate in the block matching process. It is demonstrated that such a gradient-adaptive subsampling achieves great advantage over two other known subsampling methods.

Abstract
We find the optimal window for overlapped block motion compensation (OBMC) by statistically modeling the motion field, the field of block motion estimates and their relationship. This enables us to show how the optimal OBMC window is affected by random field parameters, such as the variance of the motion field and the correlation coefficients of both the intensity field and the motion field. The OBMC window obtained in this fashion is shown to have good performance in reducing the prediction error. Furthermore, this parametric solution provides insight into motion uncertainty and the overlapped motion compensation process.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the incidence of pesticide poisoning with mixed preparation and risk factors contributing to it. METHODS Twenty-five administrative villages were studied in three townships of Jiangsu and Shandong Provinces with cluster sampling. The sampled villages were divided into study group (12 villages) and control group (13 villages) with approximately equal number of people each. Pesticide sprayers in the study group applied mixed preparation containing organophosphorous and dimethrin and those in the control group applied single organophosphorous preparation. All the sprayers in sampled villages were interviewed with a same questionnaire about their situation of pesticide spraying during the observation period. Cases of pesticide poisoning were ascertained by seniors physicians in occupational diseases after group discussion. RESULTS Incidence of pesticide poisoning was higher in 2 179 sprayers of the study group (10.10 %) than that in 2 615 of the control group (2.29%), with a highly statistically difference (chi(2) = 12.46, P < 0.01) and an risk ratio (RR) of 4.45 (95% CI = 1.94 approximately 10.05) adjusted for other risk factors by logistic regression. Other risk factors for pesticide poisoning with mixed preparation were smoking or taking food during spraying, leaking or breakdown of sprayers, without washing their whole body as soon as possible after spraying, poor personal protection, spraying for a long time, spraying by women and spraying pesticide on cotton. CONCLUSIONS If toxicity of mixed preparation of single pesticide showed a synergistic or additional effect, risk of poisoning by spraying mixed preparation increased. Health education and technical training should be strengthened for pesticide sprayers.

Abstract
Attenuated simian immunodeficiency viruses (SIVs) have been described that produce low levels of plasma virion RNA and exhibit a reduced capacity to cause disease. These viruses are particularly useful in identifying viral determinants of pathogenesis. In the present study, we show that mutation of a highly conserved tyrosine (Tyr)-containing motif (Yxxphi) in the envelope glycoprotein (Env) cytoplasmic tail (amino acids YRPV at positions 721 to 724) can profoundly reduce the in vivo pathogenicity of SIVmac239. This domain constitutes both a potent endocytosis signal that reduces Env expression on infected cells and a sorting signal that directs Env expression to the basolateral surface of polarized cells. Rhesus macaques were inoculated with SIVmac239 control or SIVmac239 containing either a Tyr-721-to-Ile mutation (SIVmac239Y/I) or a deletion of Tyr-721 and the preceding glycine (DeltaGY). To assess the in vivo replication competence, all viruses contained a stop codon in nef that has been shown to revert during in vivo but not in vitro replication. All three control animals developed high viral loads and disease. One of two animals that received SIVmac239Y/I and two of three animals that received SIVmac239DeltaGY remained healthy for up to 140 weeks with low to undetectable plasma viral RNA levels and normal CD4(+) T-cell percentages. These animals exhibited ongoing viral replication as determined by detection of viral sequences and culturing of mutant viruses from peripheral blood mononuclear cells and persistent anti-SIV antibody titers. In one animal that received SIVmac239Y/I, the Ile reverted to a Tyr and was associated with a high plasma RNA level and disease, while one animal that received SIVmac239DeltaGY also developed a high viral load that was associated with novel and possibly compensatory mutations in the TM cytoplasmic domain. In all control and experimental animals, the nef stop codon reverted to an open reading frame within the first 2 months of inoculation, indicating that the mutant viruses had replicated well enough to repair this mutation. These findings indicate that the Yxxphi signal plays an important role in SIV pathogenesis. Moreover, because mutations in this motif may attenuate SIV through mechanisms that are distinct from those caused by mutations in nef, this Tyr-based sorting signal represents a novel target for future models of SIV and human immunodeficiency virus attenuation that could be useful in new vaccine strategies.

Abstract
During 14 months of infection of a pig-tailed macaque, the acutely lethal simian immunodeficiency virus SIVsmmPBj14 (SIV-PBj14) evolved from the minimally pathogenic strain SIVsmm9. The virus isolated at 8 months (SIV-PBj8) exhibited properties of both SIVsmm9 and SIV-PBj14, indicating that a phenotypic transition occurred between 6 and 10 months. To assess the influence that this new composition of biologic properties might have on pathogenicity, three pig-tailed macaques were inoculated intravenously with SIV-PBj8. Although no animals developed the severe acute disease syndrome typical of SIV-PBj14, all had high levels of viremia and died of AIDS at 4, 10. 5, and 32 months. Characterization of the SIV-PBj8-derived quasispecies that evolved in these macaques showed that at 4 days after inoculation, viruses from all three animals exhibited in vitro properties different from those of the inoculum. By 4 months, the initial phenotypic profiles had changed, with the quasispecies in plasma from the animal (J90232) that died at this time most closely resembling SIV-PBj14, not SIV-PBj8. Phylogenetic trees of the gp41/Nef region of viruses in 4-month plasma from J90232 revealed three distinct populations with high bootstrap values: one group branched with SIVsmm9, one with SIV-PBj14, and one with SIV-PBj8 (ratio of clones, 5:9:5). Nucleotide sequence analysis suggested that some members of the original SIV-PBj8 quasispecies may have been evolving toward a SIV-PBj14-like genotype at the time macaque J90232 died. The use of SIV-PBj8, which was more pathogenic than SIVsmm9, but less pathogenic than SIV-PBj14, may provide the optimal genetic background on which to identify the minimal, multigenic determinants of the SIV-PBj14 phenotype. The results of our studies on SIV-PBj14 indicate that in some, but not all, cases of primate lentivirus infection more pathogenic variants evolve, selectively proliferate, and more than likely contribute to disease progression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators often receive adjunctive antiarrhythmic therapy to prevent frequent shocks. We tested the efficacy and safety of sotalol, a beta-blocker with class III antiarrhythmic effects, for this purpose. METHODS In a multicenter trial, patients were stratified according to left ventricular ejection fraction (< or =0.30 or >0.30), randomly assigned to double-blind treatment with 160 to 320 mg of sotalol per day (151 patients) or matching placebo (151 patients), and followed for 12 months. Kaplan-Meier analyses of the time to an event were performed. Three end points were used: the delivery of a first shock for any reason or death from any cause, the first appropriate shock for a ventricular arrhythmia or death from any cause, and the first inappropriate shock for a supraventricular arrhythmia or death from any cause. RESULTS Compliance with double-blind treatment was similar in the two groups. There were seven deaths in the placebo group and four in the sotalol group. As compared with placebo, treatment with sotalol was associated with a lower risk of death from any cause or the delivery of a first shock for any reason (reduction in risk, 48 percent; P<0.001 by the log-rank test), death from any cause or the delivery of a first appropriate shock (reduction in risk, 44 percent; P=0.007), or death from any cause or the delivery of a first inappropriate shock (reduction in risk, 64 percent; P=0.004). Sotalol also reduced the mean (+/-SD) frequency of shocks due to any cause (1.43+/-3.53 shocks per year, as compared with 3.89+/-10.65 in the placebo group; P=0.008). In the sotalol group, the reduction in the risk of death from any cause or the delivery of a first shock for any reason did not differ significantly between patients with ejection fractions of more than 0.30 and those with ejection fractions of 0.30 or less. CONCLUSIONS Oral sotalol was safe and efficacious in reducing the risk of death or the delivery of a first defibrillator shock whether or not ventricular function was depressed.

Abstract
The ability of the simian immunodeficiency virus SIVsmmPBj14 (SIV-PBj14) to activate and induce proliferation of quiescent peripheral blood lymphocytes from macaques is an in vitro correlate of its acutely lethal in vivo phenotype. SIV-PBj14 differs from other SIV strains by encoding tyrosine at amino acid 17 (Y17) in Nef, which generates an activation motif important for signal transduction. Although intravenous inoculation of pig-tailed macaques with SIV-PBj14 uniformly leads to death within 2 weeks, inoculation by mucosal routes results in persistent infections that progress to AIDS. In the present study, we determined whether viruses in long-term survivors retained not only the Nef Y17 residue but also the biologic properties associated with rapid disease-and death. Viruses reisolated at early and late times after mucosal infection of macaques with SIV-PBj14 were tested in vivo for acute lethality and in vitro for the ability to replicate in and induce activation and proliferation of quiescent macaque lymphocytes. In addition, the coding sequence for the first 55 amino acids in Nef was amplified from proviral DNA or plasma virion RNA by PCR or RT-PCR, respectively, and nucleotide sequences were obtained. The results showed that the majority of the quasispecies that persisted as disease progressed not only lost biological properties unique to SIV-PBj14, but also lost through mutation either Y17 or Y28 in Nef, which together were part of the activation motif. In the case of Y17, these mutations were stepwise to histidine then arginine, the amino acid encoded in this position in other SIV strains. We conclude, therefore, that replicative properties of the acutely lethal virus provide no selective advantage during long-term infections with SIV-PBj14 and that disruption of the activation motif in Nef is associated with loss of the acutely lethal phenotype.

Abstract
Image space reconstruction algorithm (ISRA) is a new kind of method for ECT reconstruction. Unlike the ML-EM algorithm which maximizes likelihood function of Possion distribution, ISRA searches for the minimum non-negative mean square solution. In this paper, an improved ISRA (IISRA) algorithm is proposed. A comparison between the algorithms (ISRA and IISRA) demonstrates that the result of IISRA is closer to the test image than that of ISRA. In addition, the IIRSA inherits some properties of ISRA such as convergence.

Abstract
A prototypic simian immunodeficiency virus (SIVsmm9), isolated from a naturally infected sooty mangabey (Cercocebus atys), was passaged in vivo in a pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) having the identifier PBj. When PBj died of a typical AIDS-like syndrome 14 months after infection, the virus isolated from its tissues was subsequently shown to differ from SIVsmm9 genetically and biologically. Most notably, this isolate, SIVsmmPBj14 (SIV-PBj14), is the most virulent primate lentivirus known: it induces acute disease and death within 6 to 10 days after intravenous inoculation into pig-tailed macaques. Between the time of infection with SIVsmm9 and isolation of SIV-PBj14, isolates were obtained periodically from peripheral blood mononuclear cells of PBj. To establish the temporal relationship between evolution of new biologic properties and fixation of specific mutations in the virus population, these sequential SIV-PBj isolates were characterized for unique properties of SIV-PBj14 that appeared to correlate with acute lethal disease. These properties included the ability to replicate in quiescent macaque peripheral blood mononuclear cells, to activate and induce proliferation of CD4+ and CD8+ cells, and to exhibit cytopathicity for mangabey CD4+ lymphocytes. Consistent with earlier studies, a major change in biologic properties occurred between 6 (SIV-PBj6) and 10 (SIV-PBj10) months, with the SIV-PBj8 quasispecies exhibiting properties of both earlier and later isolates. Multiple biologic clones derived from the 6-, 8-, and 10-month isolates also exhibited diverse phenotypes. For example, one SIV-PBj10 biologic clone resembled SIVsmm9 phenotypically, whereas three other biologic clones resembled SIV-PBj14. To evaluate genetic changes, proviral DNA of the biologic clones generated from SIV-PBj6, -PBj8, and -PBj10 was amplified by PCR in the U3 enhancer portion of the long terminal repeats (LTR) and the V1 region of env, where the greatest nucleotide diversity between SIVsmm9 and SIV-PBj14 resided. Nucleotide sequence data indicated that all biologically cloned viruses are distinct and that insertions/duplications of 3 to 27 nucleotides (in multiples of three) had accumulated stepwise in the env V1 region, beginning with SIV-PBj8. In addition, one of four SIV-PBj8 biologic clones had a 22-bp duplication in the LTR which is characteristic of SIV-PBj14. When virus mixtures containing different proportions of two SIV-PBj10 biologic clones with opposite phenotypes were tested, the SIV-PBj14 phenotype was clearly dominant, since mixtures with as few as 10% of the viruses being SIV-PBj14-like exhibited all the properties of the lethal isolate.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract
To clarify the effects of sex hormones on the expression of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), ovariectomized and intact female rats were subcutaneously injected with estradiol, progesterone, a mixture of them or olive oil solvent; castrated and untouched male rats were subcutaneously injected with estradiol, testosterone or olive oil, once a day for 7 days. The relative rANP-mRNA contents of rat atrial were measured by molecular hybridization. rANP-cDNA was labeled with 32P as a probe. The results revealed that estradiol and progesterone increased ANP gene expression. Furthermore their effects were associated with administration dose of these hormones and it was shown that they are probably coordinated. The physiological amounts of estradiol and progesterone may maintain suitable levels of rANP-mRNA and androgen may also increase the ANP gene expression in vivo. These experiments suggested that female sex hormone may have a dual purpose in fluid balance.

Abstract
This paper describes the evaluation of a program designed to teach basic infant resuscitation skills to mothers during the period of postnatal hospitalization. Data collected from participants before and immediately after the program, and at six months, follow-up indicated that knowledge of resuscitation techniques had moderately improved, however there was a substantial increase in participants' confidence and an associated reduction in anxiety. An additional aspect of the evaluation was to identify any logistical problems; data obtained from postnatal midwifery staff indicated none were evident. It was concluded that the Infant Resuscitation Education Program should be implemented for all mothers of newborn infants.
