Proline Spray Relieves the Adverse Effects of Drought on Wheat Flag Leaf Function

Drought stress is one of the key factors restricting crop yield. The beneficial effects of exogenous proline on crop growth under drought stress have been demonstrated in maize, rice, and other crops. However, little is known about its effects on wheat under drought stress. Especially, the water-holding capacity of leaves were overlooked in most studies. Therefore, a barrel experiment was conducted with wheat at two drought levels (severe drought: 45% field capacity, mild drought: 60% field capacity), and three proline-spraying levels (0 mM, 25 mM, and 50 mM). Meanwhile, a control with no stress and no proline application was set. The anatomical features, water-holding capacity, antioxidant capacity, and proline content of flag leaves as well as grain yields were measured. The results showed that drought stress increased the activity of catalase and peroxidase and the content of proline in flag leaves, lessened the content of chlorophyll, deformed leaf veins, and decreased the grain yield. Exogenous proline could regulate the osmotic-regulation substance content, chlorophyll content, antioxidant enzyme activity, water-holding capacity, and tissue structure of wheat flag leaves under drought stress, ultimately alleviating the impact of drought stress on wheat yield. The application of proline (25 mM and 50 mM) increased the yield by 2.88% and 10.81% under mild drought and 33.90% and 52.88% under severe drought compared to wheat without proline spray, respectively.

Slow-Wave Hybrid Magnonics

Cavity magnonics is an emerging research area focusing on the coupling between magnons and photons. Despite its great potential for coherent information processing, it has been long restricted by the narrow interaction bandwidth. In this Letter, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel approach to achieve broadband photon-magnon coupling by adopting slow waves on engineered microwave waveguides. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that slow wave is combined with hybrid magnonics. Its unique properties promise great potentials for both fundamental research and practical applications, for instance, by deepening our understanding of the light-matter interaction in the slow wave regime and providing high-efficiency spin wave transducers. The device concept can be extended to other systems such as optomagnonics and magnomechanics, opening up new directions for hybrid magnonics.

Geometric Similarities and Topological Phases in Surface Magnon Polaritons

Surface polaritons have proven to be uniquely capable of controlling light-matter interactions. Here we explore surface magnon polaritons in low-loss ferrimagnetic semiconductors, with a focus on their topological phases. We propose several surface magnon polariton devices, including microwave resonators that can strongly enhance magnetic fields and low-loss interconnects joining waveguides with vastly different impedances. Our work can facilitate the exploration of topological phases in polaritons and the development of topological microwave devices for quantum sensing and information processing.

Coherent FIR/THz wave generation and steering via surface-emitting thin film lithium niobate waveguides

Generating narrowband, continuous wave FIR/THz light via difference frequency generation (DFG) remains challenging due to material absorption and dispersion from optical phonons. The relatively new platform of thin film lithium niobate enables high-confinement nonlinear waveguides, reducing device size and potentially improving efficiency. We simulated surface-emitting DFG from 10 to 100 THz in a thin film lithium niobate waveguide with fixed poling period, demonstrating reasonable efficiency and bandwidth. Furthermore, adjusting wavelength and relative phase in an array of these waveguides enables beam steering along two directions. Continuous wave FIR/THz light can be efficiently generated and steered using these integrated devices.

A prospective single-arm study on the relationship between dose-volume parameters of pelvic functional bone marrow and acute hematological toxicities during intensity-modulated radiotherapy with or without concurrent chemotherapy for uterine cervical/endometrial cancer

BACKGROUND

FLT-PET/CT can accurately identify and locate functional bone marrow (FBM) with hematopoietic capability, the FBM were divided into two levels as FBM1 (strongest hemopoietic ability region)and FBM2 (moderate hemopoietic ability region) via FLT-PET/CT. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between dose-volume parameters of pelvic FBM and hematologic toxicity (HT) during radiotherapy with or without concurrent chemotherapy for uterine cervical/endometrial cancer.

METHODS

From December 2016 to September 2021, ninety-seven uterine cervical/endometrial cancer patients received intensity-modulated radiation therapy were prospectively recruited in this single-arm, prospective, phase II trial. Blood counts were reviewed weekly during radiotherapy. Single- and multifactor regression methods were used to analyze the relationships between dose-volume parameters of FBM1/2 and grade ≥ 2 HT. ROC curves were used to determine the cutoff values for the dose-volume parameters of FBM1/2.

RESULTS

The incidence of grade ≥ 2 leukopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia and anemia in patients during radiotherapy was 63.9%, 45.4%, 19.6% and 38.8% respectively, and the median occurrence time was the 29th, 42th, 35th and 31th day, respectively. Multivariate regression analysis showed that the Dmax of FBM1 was significantly related to grade ≥ 2 leukopenia (OR = 1.277 95% CI 1.067-1.528, P = 0.008), Dmean of FBM2 was significantly related to grade ≥ 2 thrombocytopenia (OR = 1.262 95% CI 1.066-1.494, P = 0.007), and V10 of FBM1 was significantly related to grade ≥ 2 anemia (OR = 1.198 95% CI 1.003-1.431, P = 0.046). The incidence of grade ≥ 2 leukopenia for patients with FBM1 Dmax < 53 Gy was lower than that for patients with FBM1 Dmax ≥ 53 Gy (53.4% vs. 95.8%, P < 0.001). The incidence of grade ≥ 2 thrombocytopenia in patients with FBM2 Dmean < 33 Gy was lower than that in patients with FBM2 Dmean ≥ 33 Gy (0 vs. 28.4%, P < 0.001). The incidence of grade ≥ 2 anemia for patients with FBM1 V10 < 95% was lower than that in patients with FBM1 V10 ≥ 95% (24.4% vs. 57.1%, P = 0.003).

CONCLUSIONS

Grade ≥ 2 HT usually occurs in the 4th week of radiotherapy for patients with uterine cervical/endometrial cancer. The Dmax and V10 of FBM1 and the Dmean of FBM2 were significantly associated with the occurrence of grade ≥ 2 HT. The recommended optimal dose constraints were FBM1 Dmax < 53 Gy, V10 < 95%, and FBM2 Dmean <33 Gy.

Topological electromagnetic waves in dispersive and lossy plasma crystals

Topological photonic crystals, which offer topologically protected and back-scattering-immune transport channels, have recently gained significant attention for both scientific and practical reasons. Although most current studies focus on dielectric materials with weak dispersions, this study focuses on topological phases in dispersive materials and presents a numerical study of Chern insulators in gaseous-phase plasma cylinder cells. We develop a numerical framework to address the complex material dispersion arising from the plasma medium and external magnetic fields and identify Chern insulator phases that are experimentally achievable. Using this numerical tool, we also explain the flat bands commonly observed in periodic plasmonic structures, via local resonances, and how edge states change as the edge termination is periodically modified. This work opens up opportunities for exploring band topology in new materials with non-trivial dispersions and has potential radio frequency (RF) applications, ranging from plasma-based lighting to plasma propulsion engines.

General duality and magnet-free passive phononic Chern insulators

Integrated phononics plays an important role in both fundamental physics and technology. Despite great efforts, it remains a challenge to break time-reversal symmetry to achieve topological phases and non-reciprocal devices. Piezomagnetic materials offer an intriguing opportunity as they break time-reversal symmetry intrinsically, without the need for an external magnetic field or an active driving field. Moreover, they are antiferromagnetic, and possibly compatible with superconducting components. Here, we develop a theoretical framework that combines linear elasticity with Maxwell's equations via piezoelectricity and/or piezomagnetism beyond the commonly adopted quasi-static approximation. Our theory predicts and numerically demonstrates phononic Chern insulators based on piezomagnetism. We further show that the topological phase and chiral edge states in this system can be controlled by the charge doping. Our results exploit a general duality relation between piezoelectric and piezomagnetic systems, which can potentially be generalized to other composite metamaterial systems.

Polaritonic Chern Insulators in Monolayer Semiconductors

Systems with strong light-matter interaction open up new avenues for studying topological phases of matter. Examples include exciton polaritons, mixed light-matter quasiparticles, where the topology of the polaritonic band structure arises from the collective coupling between matter wave and optical fields strongly confined in periodic dielectric structures. Distinct from light-matter interaction in a uniform environment, the spatially varying nature of the optical fields leads to a fundamental modification of the well-known optical selection rules, which were derived under the plane wave approximation. Here we identify polaritonic Chern insulators by coupling valley excitons in transition metal dichalcogenides to photonic Bloch modes in a dielectric photonic crystal slab. We show that polaritonic Dirac points, which are markers for topological phase transition points, can be constructed from the collective coupling between valley excitons and photonic Dirac cones in the presence of both time-reversal and inversion symmetries. Lifting exciton valley degeneracy by breaking time-reversal symmetry leads to gapped polaritonic bands with nonzero Chern numbers. Through numerical simulations, we predict polaritonic chiral edge states residing inside the topological gaps. Our Letter paves the way for the further study of strong exciton-photon interaction in nanophotonic structures and for exploring polaritonic topological phases and their practical applications in polaritonic devices.

Floquet Quadrupole Photonic Crystals Protected by Space-Time Symmetry

High-order topological phases, such as those with nontrivial quadrupole moments [1,2], protect edge states that are themselves topological insulators in lower dimensions. So far, most quadrupole phases of light are explored in linear optical systems, which are protected by spatial symmetries [3] or synthetic symmetries [1,2,4-7]. Here we present Floquet quadrupole phases in driven nonlinear photonic crystals that are protected by space-time screw symmetries [8]. We start by illustrating space-time symmetries by tracking the trajectory of instantaneous optical axes of the driven media. Our Floquet quadrupole phase is then confirmed in two independent ways: symmetry indices at high-symmetry momentum points and calculations of the nested Wannier bands. Our Letter presents a general framework to analyze symmetries in driven optical materials and paves the way to further exploring symmetry-protected topological phases in Floquet systems and their optoelectronic applications.

Two new polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinols derivatives from Hypericum acmosepalum

Polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinols (PPAPs) were mainly obtained from the plants of Hypericum genus of Guttiferae family, and possessed intriguing chemical structures and appealing biological activities. Two new PPAPs derivatives, hyperacmosin C (1) and hyperacmosin D (2) were isolated from H. acmosepalum. Their structures were established by NMR, HREIMS, and experimental electronic circular dichroism spectra. Besides, compound 1 showed significant hepatoprotective activity at 10 µM against paracetamol-induced HepG2 cell damage and compound 2 could moderately increase the relative glucose consumption.

Polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinol derivatives from Hypericum pseudohenryi

Seven previously unidentified polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinol (PPAP) derivatives hypseudohenrins A-G, along with six known analogs, were isolated from the aerial portion of Hypericum pseudohenryi. Their structures were determined by NMR, ECD and X-ray crystallographic spectroscopy. These compounds were screened for anti-inflammatory activity, and hypseudohenrins B and G (at the concentration of 10 μM) showed NO production inhibition ratios of 52.56% and 54.01%, respectively, which imply good anti-inflammatory activity. In particular, uraloidin A exhibited an NO inhibition ratio of 90.61%, while that ratio of the positive control compound dexamethasone was 94.88%. Additionally, anti-cancer and neural-protective activities were screened, but none of these compounds showed desirable activity.

Hypseudohenrins I - K: three new polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinol derivatives from Hypericum pseudohenryi

Three previously unidentified polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinols (PPAPs) derivatives, hypseudohenrins I-K (1-3), along with a known analogue hyphenrone X (4), were isolated from the aerial part of Hypericum pseudohenryi. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by NMR spectroscopy and ECD calculation. The anti-inflammatory activity of the compounds was evaluated. Compounds 1-3 showed mild anti-inflammatory activity while hyphenrone X showed prominent anti-inflammatory activity.[Formula: see text].

Floquet Topological Phases in One-Dimensional Nonlinear Photonic Crystals

We report on a theoretical analysis of the Floquet topological crystalline phases in driven one-dimensional photonic crystals mediated by second-order optical nonlinearity. We define the photonic Berry connection and photonic polarization in such systems using different methods and prove their equivalence. We present two examples of topological phase transitions in which two Floquet bands cross and open new gaps under the driving field. Finally, we analyze the physical consequences of each topological phase transition by examining edge states and filling anomalies. Our study presents routes toward the realization of robust reconfigurable photonic cavities with topologically protected light confinement.

Non-Abelian generalizations of the Hofstadter model: spin-orbit-coupled butterfly pairs

The Hofstadter model, well known for its fractal butterfly spectrum, describes two-dimensional electrons under a perpendicular magnetic field, which gives rise to the integer quantum Hall effect. Inspired by the real-space building blocks of non-Abelian gauge fields from a recent experiment, we introduce and theoretically study two non-Abelian generalizations of the Hofstadter model. Each model describes two pairs of Hofstadter butterflies that are spin-orbit coupled. In contrast to the original Hofstadter model that can be equivalently studied in the Landau and symmetric gauges, the corresponding non-Abelian generalizations exhibit distinct spectra due to the non-commutativity of the gauge fields. We derive the genuine (necessary and sufficient) non-Abelian condition for the two models from the commutativity of their arbitrary loop operators. At zero energy, the models are gapless and host Weyl and Dirac points protected by internal and crystalline symmetries. Double (8-fold), triple (12-fold), and quadrupole (16-fold) Dirac points also emerge, especially under equal hopping phases of the non-Abelian potentials. At other fillings, the gapped phases of the models give rise to topological insulators. We conclude by discussing possible schemes for experimental realization of the models on photonic platforms.

Abstract CT406: Patients with cancer appear more vulnerable to SARS-COV-2: A multi-center study during the COVID-19 outbreak

The novel COVID-19 outbreak has affected more than 200 countries and territories as of March 2020. Given that patients with cancer are generally more vulnerable to infections, systematic analysis of diverse cohorts of patients with cancer affected by COVID-19 are needed. We performed a multi-center study including 105 cancer patients and 536 age-matched non-cancer patients confirmed with COVID-19. Our results showed COVID-19 patients with cancer had higher risks in all severe outcomes. Patients with hematological cancer, lung cancer, or with metastatic cancer (stage IV) had the highest frequency of severe events. Non-metastatic cancer patients experienced similar frequencies of severe conditions to those observed in patients without cancer. Patients who received surgery had higher risks of having severe events, while patients with only radiotherapy did not demonstrate significant differences in severe events when compared to patients without cancer. These findings indicate that cancer patients appear more vulnerable to SARS-COV-2 outbreak. Since this is the first large cohort study on this topic, our report will provide the much-needed information that will benefit global cancer patients. As such, we believe it is extremely important that our study be disseminated widely to alert clinicians and patients.

Quadrupole topological photonic crystals

Quadrupole topological phases, exhibiting protected boundary states that are themselves topological insulators of lower dimensions, have recently been of great interest. Extensions of these ideas from current tight binding models to continuum theories for realistic materials require the identification of quantized invariants describing the bulk quadrupole order. Here we identify the analog of quadrupole order in Maxwell’s equations for a gyromagnetic photonic crystal (PhC) through a double-band-inversion process. The quadrupole moment is quantized by the simultaneous presence of crystalline symmetry and broken time-reversal symmetry, which is confirmed using three independent methods: analysis of symmetry eigenvalues, numerical calculations of the nested Wannier bands and the expectation value of the quadrupole operator. Furthermore, we reveal the boundary manifestations of quadrupole phases as quantized edge polarizations and fractional corner charges. The latter are the consequence of a filling anomaly of energy bands as first predicted in electronic systems.

Most higher order topological phases are realized by emulations of tight binding models. Extending these concepts to continuum theories requires the identification of invariants describing the bulk multipole order. Here the authors realize the analog of quadrupole order for a gyromagnetic photonic crystal.

Floquet Chern insulators of light

Achieving topologically-protected robust transport in optical systems has recently been of great interest. Most studied topological photonic structures can be understood by solving the eigenvalue problem of Maxwell’s equations for static linear systems. Here, we extend topological phases into dynamically driven systems and achieve a Floquet Chern insulator of light in nonlinear photonic crystals (PhCs). Specifically, we start by presenting the Floquet eigenvalue problem in driven two-dimensional PhCs. We then define topological invariant associated with Floquet bands, and show that topological band gaps with non-zero Chern number can be opened by breaking time-reversal symmetry through the driving field. Finally, we numerically demonstrate the existence of chiral edge states at the interfaces between a Floquet Chern insulator and normal insulators, where the transport is non-reciprocal and uni-directional. Our work paves the way to further exploring topological phases in driven optical systems and their optoelectronic applications.

Topological photonic structures can be understood by solving the eigenvalue problem of Maxwell’s equations in the static case. Here, the authors study Floquet topological phases in nonlinear photonic crystals under external drive and show how non-reciprocal transport can be achieved in a Floquet Chern insulator.

Boscartins L-O: Cembrane-type diterpenoids from the gum resin of Boswellia sacra Flueck

Four undescribed cembrane-type diterpenoids, boscartins L-O, as well as five known compounds (1S, 3R, 11S, 12R, 7E)-1,12-epoxy-4-methylenecembr-7- ene- 3,11-diol, isoincensole oxide, incensole oxide, incensole acetate and incensole oxide acetate were isolated from the gum resin of Boswellia sacra Flueck. (Burseraceae). The structures of these compounds were elucidated by extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic and mass spectrometric analysis, as well as comparisons with known compounds. The absolute configurations of the known compound (1S, 3R, 7E, 11S, 12R)-1,12-epoxy-4-methylenecembr-7-ene-3,11-diol was unequivocally confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis with Cu Kα radiation. Incensole acetate exhibited significant hepatoprotective activity at 10 μM against paracetamol-induced HepG2 cell damage.

Hyperascyrins L - N, rare methylated polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinol derivatives from Hypericum ascyron

Seven natural compounds, including new compounds hyperascyrins L-N (1-3) and four known compounds (4-7), were acquired from the aerial parts of Hypericum ascyron, that were all identified as methylated polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinol derivatives (mPPAPs). The structures of these compounds were established by NMR spectroscopy, experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD) data. The neuroprotective activities and hepatoprotective activity of these compounds (10 µM) were evaluated. Compounds 1, 2 and 3 exhibited neuroprotection activity. Compounds 1 and 3 show hepatoprotective activity.

[Chemical constituents of Hypericum perforatum]

A chemical investigation on the aerial parts of Hypericum perforatum resulted in the isolation of a new phloroglucinol derivatives (1), and seven known compounds (2-8). The structures of the compounds were elucidated by means of spectroscopic methods (MS, IR, 1D NMR, and 2D NMR) as 3-methyl-4,6-di (3- methyl-2-butenyl)-3-(4-methyl-3-pentenyl)-2-(2-ethyl-1-oxobutyl)-cyclohexanone (1)，hyperforin (2)，(2R,3R,4S,6R)-3-methyl-4,6-di(3-methyl-2-butenyl)-2-(2-methyl-1-oxo-propyl)-3-(4-methyl-3-pentenyl)-cyclohexanone (3)，hyperscabrin B (4)，hyperscabrin C (5)，furohyperforin isomer 1 (6)，furoadhyperforin (7)，and furohyperforin (8). Compound 1 was a new compound, and compounds 3-5 were obtained from H. perforatum for the first time.

Topological Band Theory for Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians

We develop the topological band theory for systems described by non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, whose energy spectra are generally complex. After generalizing the notion of gapped band structures to the non-Hermitian case, we classify "gapped" bands in one and two dimensions by explicitly finding their topological invariants. We find nontrivial generalizations of the Chern number in two dimensions, and a new classification in one dimension, whose topology is determined by the energy dispersion rather than the energy eigenstates. We then study the bulk-edge correspondence and the topological phase transition in two dimensions. Different from the Hermitian case, the transition generically involves an extended intermediate phase with complex-energy band degeneracies at isolated "exceptional points" in momentum space. We also systematically classify all types of band degeneracies.

Synthesis and antitumor activities of sinomenine derivatives on rings A and C

A series of new sinomenine derivatives were designed, synthesized, and evaluated in tumor inhibitory activity, such as human triple negative breast cancer cell line (MDA-MB-231), glioma cell line (A172), human lung cancer cell line (A549), human colon cancer cell line (HCT-8). The modifications were carried out on rings A and C of the sinomenine by esterificating on phenolic hydroxyl with good yields. The highlight of this work was that the synthetic procedures were concise and sinomenine derivatives demonstrated promising antitumor activities.

Topologically enabled optical nanomotors

Shaping the topology of light, by way of spin or orbital angular momentum engineering, is a powerful tool to manipulate matter on the nanoscale. Conventionally, such methods focus on shaping the incident beam of light and not the full interaction between the light and the object to be manipulated. We theoretically show that tailoring the topology of the phase space of the light particle interaction is a fundamentally more versatile approach, enabling dynamics that may not be achievable by shaping of the light alone. In this manner, we find that optically asymmetric (Janus) particles can become stable nanoscale motors even in a light field with zero angular momentum. These precessing steady states arise from topologically protected anticrossing behavior of the vortices of the optical torque vector field. Furthermore, by varying the wavelength of the incident light, we can control the number, orientations, and the stability of the spinning states. These results show that the combination of phase-space topology and particle asymmetry can provide a powerful degree of freedom in designing nanoparticles for optimal external manipulation in a range of nano-optomechanical applications.

General theory of spontaneous emission near exceptional points

We present a general theory of spontaneous emission at exceptional points (EPs)-exotic degeneracies in non-Hermitian systems. Our theory extends beyond spontaneous emission to any light-matter interaction described by the local density of states (e.g., absorption, thermal emission, and nonlinear frequency conversion). Whereas traditional spontaneous-emission theories imply infinite enhancement factors at EPs, we derive finite bounds on the enhancement, proving maximum enhancement of 4 in passive systems with second-order EPs and significantly larger enhancements (exceeding 400×) in gain-aided and higher-order EP systems. In contrast to non-degenerate resonances, which are typically associated with Lorentzian emission curves in systems with low losses, EPs are associated with non-Lorentzian lineshapes, leading to enhancements that scale nonlinearly with the resonance quality factor. Our theory can be applied to dispersive media, with proper normalization of the resonant modes.

Dynamically Encircling Exceptional Points: Exact Evolution and Polarization State Conversion

We show that a two-level non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with constant off-diagonal exchange elements can be analyzed exactly when the underlying exceptional point is perfectly encircled in the complex plane. The state evolution of this system is explicitly obtained in terms of an ensuing transfer matrix, even for large encirclements, regardless of adiabatic conditions. Our results clearly explain the direction-dependent nature of this process and why in the adiabatic limit its outcome is dominated by a specific eigenstate-irrespective of initial conditions. Moreover, numerical simulations suggest that this mechanism can still persist in the presence of nonlinear effects. We further show that this robust process can be harnessed to realize an optical omnipolarizer: a configuration that generates a desired polarization output regardless of the input polarization state, while from the opposite direction it always produces the counterpart eigenstate.

Direct imaging of isofrequency contours in photonic structures

The isofrequency contours of a photonic crystal are important for predicting and understanding exotic optical phenomena that are not apparent from high-symmetry band structure visualizations. We demonstrate a method to directly visualize the isofrequency contours of high-quality photonic crystal slabs that show quantitatively good agreement with numerical results throughout the visible spectrum. Our technique relies on resonance-enhanced photon scattering from generic fabrication disorder and surface roughness, so it can be applied to general photonic and plasmonic crystals or even quasi-crystals. We also present an analytical model of the scattering process, which explains the observation of isofrequency contours in our technique. Furthermore, the isofrequency contours provide information about the characteristics of the disorder and therefore serve as a feedback tool to improve fabrication processes.

Formation mechanism of guided resonances and bound states in the continuum in photonic crystal slabs

We develop a formalism, based on the mode expansion method, to describe the guided resonances and bound states in the continuum (BICs) in photonic crystal slabs with one-dimensional periodicity. This approach provides analytic insights to the formation mechanisms of these states: the guided resonances arise from the transverse Fabry–Pérot condition, and the divergence of the resonance lifetimes at the BICs is explained by a destructive interference of radiation from different propagating components inside the slab. We show BICs at the center and on the edge of the Brillouin zone protected by symmetry, BICs at generic wave vectors not protected by symmetry, and the annihilation of BICs at low-symmetry wave vectors.

Optically Thin Metallic Films for High-Radiative-Efficiency Plasmonics

Plasmonics enables deep-subwavelength concentration of light and has become important for fundamental studies as well as real-life applications. Two major existing platforms of plasmonics are metallic nanoparticles and metallic films. Metallic nanoparticles allow efficient coupling to far field radiation, yet their synthesis typically leads to poor material quality. Metallic films offer substantially higher quality materials, but their coupling to radiation is typically jeopardized due to the large momentum mismatch with free space. Here, we propose and theoretically investigate optically thin metallic films as an ideal platform for high-radiative-efficiency plasmonics. For far-field scattering, adding a thin high-quality metallic substrate enables a higher quality factor while maintaining the localization and tunability that the nanoparticle provides. For near-field spontaneous emission, a thin metallic substrate, of high quality or not, greatly improves the field overlap between the emitter environment and propagating surface plasmons, enabling high-Purcell (total enhancement >10(4)), high-quantum-yield (>50%) spontaneous emission, even as the gap size vanishes (3-5 nm). The enhancement has almost spatially independent efficiency and does not suffer from quenching effects that commonly exist in previous structures.

Spawning rings of exceptional points out of Dirac cones

The Dirac cone underlies many unique electronic properties of graphene and topological insulators, and its band structure--two conical bands touching at a single point--has also been realized for photons in waveguide arrays, atoms in optical lattices, and through accidental degeneracy. Deformation of the Dirac cone often reveals intriguing properties; an example is the quantum Hall effect, where a constant magnetic field breaks the Dirac cone into isolated Landau levels. A seemingly unrelated phenomenon is the exceptional point, also known as the parity-time symmetry breaking point, where two resonances coincide in both their positions and widths. Exceptional points lead to counter-intuitive phenomena such as loss-induced transparency, unidirectional transmission or reflection, and lasers with reversed pump dependence or single-mode operation. Dirac cones and exceptional points are connected: it was theoretically suggested that certain non-Hermitian perturbations can deform a Dirac cone and spawn a ring of exceptional points. Here we experimentally demonstrate such an 'exceptional ring' in a photonic crystal slab. Angle-resolved reflection measurements of the photonic crystal slab reveal that the peaks of reflectivity follow the conical band structure of a Dirac cone resulting from accidental degeneracy, whereas the complex eigenvalues of the system are deformed into a two-dimensional flat band enclosed by an exceptional ring. This deformation arises from the dissimilar radiation rates of dipole and quadrupole resonances, which play a role analogous to the loss and gain in parity-time symmetric systems. Our results indicate that the radiation existing in any open system can fundamentally alter its physical properties in ways previously expected only in the presence of material loss and gain.

Topological nature of optical bound states in the continuum

Optical bound states in the continuum (BICs) have recently been realized in photonic crystal slabs, where the disappearance of out-of-plane radiation turns leaky resonances into guided modes with infinite lifetimes. We show that such BICs are vortex centers in the polarization directions of far-field radiation. They carry conserved and quantized topological charges, defined by the winding number of the polarization vectors, which ensure their robust existence and govern their generation, evolution, and annihilation. Our findings connect robust BICs in photonics to a wide range of topological physical phenomena.

Alterations in the endometrium of rats, rabbits, and Macaca mulatta that received an implantation of copper/low-density polyethylene nanocomposite

A copper/low-density polyethylene nanocomposite (nano-Cu/LDPE), a potential intrauterine device component material, has been developed from our research. A logical extension of our previous work, this study was conducted to investigate the expression of plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1), substance P (SP), and substance P receptor (SP-R) in the endometrium of Sprague Dawley rats, New Zealand White rabbits, and Macaca mulatta implanted with nano-Cu/LDPE composite. The influence of the nano-Cu/LDPE composite on the morphology of the endometrium was also investigated. Animals were randomly divided into five groups: the sham-operated control group (SO group), bulk copper group (Cu group), LDPE group, and nano-Cu/LDPE groups I and II. An expression of PAI-1, SP, and SP-R in the endometrial tissues was examined by immunohistochemistry at day 30, 60, 90, and 180 postimplantation. The significant difference for PAI-1, SP, and SP-R between the nano-Cu/LDPE groups and the SO group (P<0.05) was identified when the observation period was terminated, and the changes of nano-Cu/LDPE on these parameters were less remarkable than those of the Cu group (P<0.05). The damage to the endometrial morphology caused by the nano-Cu/LDPE composite was much less than that caused by bulk copper. The nano-Cu/LDPE composite might be a potential substitute for conventional materials for intrauterine devices in the future because of its decreased adverse effects on the endometrial microenvironment.

Fabricating centimeter-scale high quality factor two-dimensional periodic photonic crystal slabs

We present a fabrication route for centimeter-scale two-dimensional defect-free photonic crystal slabs with quality factors bigger than 10,000 in the visible, together with a unique way to quantify their quality factors. We fabricate Si(3)N(4) photonic crystal slabs, and perform an angle-resolved reflection measurement. This measurement data is used to retrieve the quality factors of the slabs by fitting it to a model based on temporal coupled-mode theory. The macroscopic nature of the structure and the high quality factors of their resonances could open up new opportunities for realizing efficient macroscale optoelectronic devices such as sensors, lasers, and energy harvesting systems.

Observation of trapped light within the radiation continuum

The ability to confine light is important both scientifically and technologically. Many light confinement methods exist, but they all achieve confinement with materials or systems that forbid outgoing waves. These systems can be implemented by metallic mirrors, by photonic band-gap materials, by highly disordered media (Anderson localization) and, for a subset of outgoing waves, by translational symmetry (total internal reflection) or by rotational or reflection symmetry. Exceptions to these examples exist only in theoretical proposals. Here we predict and show experimentally that light can be perfectly confined in a patterned dielectric slab, even though outgoing waves are allowed in the surrounding medium. Technically, this is an observation of an 'embedded eigenvalue'--namely, a bound state in a continuum of radiation modes--that is not due to symmetry incompatibility. Such a bound state can exist stably in a general class of geometries in which all of its radiation amplitudes vanish simultaneously as a result of destructive interference. This method to trap electromagnetic waves is also applicable to electronic and mechanical waves.

Topological dangling bonds with large spin splitting and enhanced spin polarization on the surfaces of Bi2Se3

We investigate the topological surface state properties at various surface cleaves in the topological insulator Bi2Se3, via first principles calculations and scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS). While the typical surface termination occurs between two quintuple layers, we report the existence of a surface termination within a single quintuple layer where dangling bonds form with giant spin splitting owing to strong spin-orbit coupling. Unlike Rashba split states in a 2D electron gas, these states are constrained by the band topology of the host insulator with topological properties similar to the typical topological surface state, and thereby offer an alternative candidate for spintronics usage. We name these new states "topological dangling-bond states". The degree of the spin polarization of these states is greatly enhanced. Since dangling bonds are more chemically reactive, the observed topological dangling-bond states provide a new avenue for manipulating band dispersions and spin-textures by adsorbed atoms or molecules.

Observation and differentiation of unique high-Q optical resonances near zero wave vector in macroscopic photonic crystal slabs

We demonstrate and distinguish experimentally the existence of a special type of Fano resonances at k≈0 in a macroscopic two-dimensional photonic crystal slab. We fabricate a square lattice array of holes in a silicon nitride layer and perform an angular resolved spectral analysis of the various Fano resonances. We elucidate their radiation behavior using temporal coupled-mode theory and symmetry considerations. The unique simplicity of this system whereby an ultralong lifetime delocalized electromagnetic field can exist above the surface and consequently easily interact with added matter, provides exciting new opportunities for the study of light and matter interaction.
