Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in a prospective cohort of COVID-19 survivors

PURPOSE

To analyze the prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in patients who survived moderate and severe forms of COVID-19 and the risk factors for LUTS six months after hospitalization.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In this prospective cohort study, patients were evaluated six months after hospitalization due to COVID-19. LUTS were assessed using the International Prostate Symptom Score. General health was assessed through the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the EQ5D-L5 scale, which evaluates mobility, ability to perform daily activities, pain and discomfort and completed a self-perception health evaluation.

RESULTS

Of 255 participants, 54.1% were men and the median age was 57.3 [44.3 - 66.6] years. Pre-existing comorbidities included diabetes (35.7%), hypertension (54.5%), obesity (30.2%) and physical inactivity (65.5%). One hundred and twenty-four patients (48.6%) had a hospital stay >15 days, 181 (71.0%) were admitted to an ICU and 124 (48.6%) needed mechanical ventilation. Median IPSS was 6 [3-11] and did not differ between genders. Moderate to severe LUTS affected 108 (42.4%) patients (40.6% men and 44.4% women; p=0.610). Nocturia (58.4%) and frequency (45.9%) were the most prevalent symptoms and urgency was the only symptom that affected men (29.0%) and women (44.4%) differently (p=0.013). LUTS impacted the quality of life of 60 (23.5%) patients with women more severely affected (p=0.004). Diabetes, hypertension, and self-perception of worse general health were associated with LUTS.

CONCLUSIONS

LUTS are highly prevalent and bothersome six months after hospitalization due to COVID-19. Assessment of LUTS may help ensure appropriate diagnosis and treatment in these patients.

Thermally induced dimensionality changes in derivatives of a "super stable" Blatter radical

Two derivatives of a "super stable" Blatter radical (1,3-diphenyl-7-trifluoromethyl-1,4-dihydrobenzo[e][1,2,4]triazin-4-yl) with N(1)-Ar = 2-CF3C6H4 and 2-MeOC6H4 were obtained and investigated using XRD and SQUID magnetometry methods. The investigation revealed strong antiferromagnetic interactions in both radicals, which are described using the Hatfield model. For the latter radical, an abrupt and reversible change in the χ(T) plot was observed at 29 K. It was ascribed to a structural transition, consistent with a two-dimensional to one-dimensional thermally activated crossover, as supported by specific heat measurements (CvHvs. T). It is suggested that the transition is related to an order-disorder transition of the CF3 group, which is corroborated using XRD structural analysis.

Efficacy of three methods for inserting calcium hydroxide-based paste in root canals

Background

To compare the quality of calcium hydroxide paste fillings performed by three different techniques.

Material and Methods

Sixty extracted maxillary central incisors, with previous root canal treatment, were decoronated and the gutta-percha was completely removed from the root canals. Subsequently, the canals were filled with a calcium hydroxide-based paste composed of calcium hydroxide, bismuth carbonate, and glycerin. The study samples were divided into the following three groups on the basis of three insertion techniques (n = 20, each): conventional technique using a hand instrument (MAN), rotary Lentulo spiral (LEN) technique, and a combined technique combining conventional hand files with sonic activation through the EndoActivator device (EA). The quality of fillings was evaluated radiographically by two examiners on the basis of the amount of voids and the apical limit.

Results

The canals filled with LEN or MAN had less void volume compared to the EA technique (P >0.01), with no significant differences between them. Considering the apical limits, the three tested techniques showed comparable results (P >0.05).

Conclusions

A combined approach utilizing hand files with sonic activation showed no enhancements over the LEN or MAN techniques on the quality of intracanal placement of calcium hydroxide paste.

Activity profile in multiple sclerosis: an integrative approach. A preliminary report

In order to define an activity profile in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), T-cell subpopulations and proliferative responses to myelin basic protein (MBP) associated with anti-MBP antibodies, nitrotyrosine levels in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and serum CD40L (sCD154) were simultaneously assessed in 29 consecutive and untreated MS patients. When compared to controls, patients in secondary progressive stable (SP/I), or in full remission (RR/I) stages, individuals with secondary progressive active disease (SPIA) or in acute relapse (RR/A) showed a significant decrease of CD4/CD45RA+ T cells associated with an increase of absolute numbers of CD4/45R0+ T cells (p < 0.001). In addition, in vitro-specific T-cell proliferative responses against MBP (SP/A, RR/A, SP/I: p < 0.001 versus controls) in association with augmented sCD154 serum levels (SP/A, RR/A, versus controls p < 0.001) and a significant increase of both CSF and serum levels of anti-MBP antibodies and nitrotyrosine levels (p < 0.001) were also found. Thus, the simultaneous evaluation of antibody and cell-mediated immunopathological parameters, along with the effector mediators of inflammation such as the nitric oxide products, offers a new integrative approach to characterize markers of clinical activity in MS patients, which may be used at the moment of the initial diagnosis and during an apparent recurrences of the disease to monitor therapeutic protocols and to determine whether immune-based nerve destruction mechanisms are still operating in patients with few clinical findings.
