Abstract
We aimed to evaluate the effects of dental correction on voluntary nutrient intake, time of intake, apparent digestibility and fecal particle size in Brazilian ponies. Twelve mares, with no history of previous dental treatments, housed in individual pens and fed a diet based on tifton 85 were used. The study comprised two consecutive experimental phases, pre and post dental treatment. Each phase consisted of 15 days for adaptation to the pen and treatment and 5 days for data collection, totaling 20 days. To calculate nutrient intake and digestibility coefficients, samples of diets, leftovers, and feces were analyzed for dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), crude fat (CF), mineral matter (MM), organic matter (OM), and non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC). Food intake time was recorded using a digital video recorder. Fecal particles were analyzed by wet sieving. Dental correction did not influence the intake of DM, CP, NDF, CF, and OM by the animals. However, there was an increase in NFC intake from 0.12 kg to 0.14 kg and in food intake time from 654.50 ± 138.98 to 774.95 ± 167.14. There was a decrease in the digestibility of CP from 0.08 kg to 0.04 kg and an increase in the digestibility of NDF from 0.65 kg to 0.82 kg. Although odontoplasty increased the time of hay intake and the digestibility of the fibrous fractions of the feed of ponies, it did not influence the intake of nutrients and the size of the fecal particles.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the extent of inflammation response in the middle carpal joints of healthy horses following intra-articular injection of 2% lidocaine, 0.5% bupivacaine, or 0.9% saline solution. The right middle carpal joint of 20 horses was injected with 5 mL of 0.5% bupivacaine (GB, n = 10) or 5 mL of 2% lidocaine (GL, n = 10). The left middle carpal joint of horses was used as a control (5 mL 0.9% saline). Serum and synovial fluid (SF) were aseptically collected before and at predetermined times after each injection. Serum and synovial fluid protein, albumin, transferrin, haptoglobin, ceruloplasmin, α1-antitripsin, and α1-acid glycoprotein concentrations were measured by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and compared among treatments. The results were submitted to analysis of variance using the SAS statistical program, and means were compared by the Student-Newman-Keuls test (P < .05). Both lidocaine and bupivacaine induced serum and SF changes indicative of inflammation, but the magnitude of those changes was more pronounced for lidocaine. Administration of 0.9% saline also induced an inflammatory reaction, but the magnitude of these changes was less pronounced than those caused by GB and GL. The results suggested that bupivacaine is safer than lidocaine for intra-articular injection in horses. Saline solution should not be used as an adjunct to intra-articular injections in horses.

Abstract
This study aimed to compare the antinociceptive effects of tramadol 5% and lidocaine 2% on mental nerve block in horses of the Brazilian Pony breed. Eight adult non-pregnant mares were used in this study. The ponies were tranquilized with acepromazine (5 µg kg-1, IV), and the infiltration of the mental foramen was performed in Treatment 1- tramadol 5% (T, 150 mg) or Treatment 2- lidocaine 2% (L, 60 mg), both at a total dose of 3 ml in each foramen. Heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), systolic arterial pressure (SAP), diastolic arterial pressure (DAP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), rectal temperature (RT), and formation of skin lesions (SL) were evaluated. Evaluation of nociception of the outer lip (OL), inner lip (IL), and gingiva (GG) were performed using an electronic von Frey device with the evaluation of the ponies' reactions to each stimulus. From these reactions, we determined latency time (LT) and duration of antinociception (DAN). Analysis of variance with 16 observations was performed for HR, RR, SAP, DAP, MAP, LT and DAN. Data were expressed as mean ± standard deviation and the means were compared by the SNK and Student's t-test (P< 0.05). Changes in HR, RR, SAP, DAP, and MAP between evaluation times were associated with the effects of acepromazine (P>0.05). No formation of skin lesions was observed. Latency time did not differ between treatments (P>0.05). Both lidocaine 2% and tramadol 5% produced an antinociceptive effect. We conclude that the duration of the antinociceptive effect of tramadol 5% is longer than that of lidocaine 2%.

Abstract
Abstract Searching for improvements in semen cryopreservation, natural substances are commonly studied focusing to improve the sperm quality. The aim of this study were evaluated the effect of adding orange, pineapple, and beet juices in different concentrations and combinations to the ram semen cryopreservation extender. Five ejaculates from five adult rams were used. The semen pool was diluted in egg yolk-based extender and mixed with the following 15 treatments (at a final concentration of 400.106 sptz/mL): orange 10% (O10) and 15% (O15); pineapple 10% (P10) and 15% (P15); beet 10% (B10) and 15% (B15); pineapple + orange 10% (PO10) and 15% (PO15); pineapple + beet 10% (PB10) and 15% (PB15); beet + orange 10% (BO10) and 15% (BO15); pineapple + beet + orange 10% (PBO10) and 15% (PBO15); and the control group (CON). Post-thaw in 0.25 mL straws semen quality analysis of cryopreserved semen was performed by CASA and flow cytometry. Analysis of variance (PROC GLM) was carried out and the averages were compared using the SNK test. Pearson's correlation test was also performed. No effect was noted in the addition of juices to the semen extender prior to cryopreservation. Post-thawed, although, statistically similar to the control group, the total motility of the B10 group reached acceptable standards of total motility. In addition, B10 group showed the highest values (p<0.05) of progressive motility than control group or other treatments. The addition of 10% beet juice to the ram semen extender can improve the cryopreservation of sperm motility.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract
Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of feed restriction on acute-phase response in horses. Twenty horses were deprived of food for 48 h and others 12 animals (control) had free access to water and hay. They were closely monitored and examined, and blood samples were taken at the beginning (0) of the study and 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48 hours afterward. Data were submitted to two-way analysis of variance with repeated measures and statistical significance was P ≤ 0.05. The horses tolerated feed restriction without serious clinical complications. Feed restriction induced an increase in the acute-phase response by elevating serum concentrations of α2-macroglobulin (24-38 h), ceruloplasmin (36-48 h), α1-antitrypsin (30-48 h), α1-acid glycoprotein (42-48 h) and haptoglobin (42-48 h). Nutrient deprivation raised the levels of circulating cortisol, which acts on the innate immune system, which then induces the acute-phase response. In conclusion, food restriction is a physical stressor for horses, capable of inducing an acute-phase protein reaction, characterized by increased production of α2-macroglobulin, ceruloplasmin, α1- antitrypsin, α1-acid glycoprotein and haptoglobin.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of feed restriction on some physical and blood parameters in horses kept outdoors under natural conditions. Twenty horses were deprived of food for 48 h. They were closely monitored and examined, and blood samples were taken at the beginning (0) of the experiment and 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48 hours afterward. During the experimental period, the control group (12 animals) had free access to water and hay, while the restricted group had free access to water only. Data were submitted to two-way analysis of variance with repeated measures, and statistical significance was P ≤ 0.05. The horses tolerated feed restriction without complications. Feed restriction had no effect on body mass and body condition score, heart rate, respiratory rate, capillary filling time and body temperature. However, feed restriction decreased the intensity of gastrointestinal sounds (P<0.05) compared to the control horses. Feed restriction did not cause any changes in erythrocyte variables and gamma glutamyl transferase, creatinine, total protein, and albumin concentrations. During fasting, there was a reduction in the leukocyte response (P<0.05). Feed restriction significantly raised the levels of blood urea nitrogen (24 to 48 hours), aspartate aminotransferase (36 to 48 hours) and total cholesterol (42 to 48 hours). During 48 hours of fasting, there was a continuous increase in triglyceride concentration. Feed restriction for 48 h had a marked effect on the intensity of gastrointestinal sounds and was responsible for important metabolic changes in the healthy horses of our sample.

Abstract
This study evaluated the physicochemical, lipid peroxidation, and microbiological quality of mortadellas prepared with ram and supplemented with different amounts of Smallanthus sonchifolius meal. Three mutton mortadella formulations supplemented with 1.25%, 2.50%, and 5% yacón meal and control formulation without yacón meal was included. The physicochemical, lipid peroxidation, and microbiological analyses were carried out in the time periods 10, 45 days, three, and six month after the preparation of mortadella. The control formulation presenting lighter and more intense red tone compared with the other formulations. All formulations presenting lipid peroxidation increased 90 days after processing; already the pH and Aw values were constant for all formulations at the experimental times stipulated. All formulations had the physicochemical characterization and microbiological quality standards, according to defined in regulations for mortadella production in Brazil. The results show that mutton mortadella supplemented with yacón meal is a promising alternative in the manufacture of healthy meat products.

Abstract
Excess sodium in food is associated with an increased risk of noncommunicable diseases. Faced with this reality, consumers are becoming aware of the importance of eating foods with reduced sodium content. This work assesses the effects of partial replacement of NaCl by KCl on the microbiological and physicochemical characteristics of uncooked lamb sausage treated with different doses of gamma radiation. Analyses of thermotolerant coliforms, sulfite-reducing Clostridium, Salmonella sp., protein, moisture, ash, lipids, pH, water activity, and color were performed. The results showed that the formulations with reduced sodium content did not differ significantly concerning microbial growth and met the identity and quality standards considering its physicochemical characteristics. Also, irradiation is efficient as a microbiological control method, and the ± 3-kGy dose was the most effective to eliminate pathogenic bacteria present in the sausage formulation prepared with reduced sodium content, inducing less intense changes in physicochemical parameters.

Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) is identified as a signaling molecule involved in many cellular or physiological functions, including meiotic maturation of cattle oocytes. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of supplementation of culture medium with the L-arginine (L-arg, NO synthesis precursor) in nuclear maturation of oocytes, concentrations of nitrate/nitrite, progesterone (P4), and 17β-estradiol (E2) in the culture medium; and the cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) and cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) intracellular concentrations in the cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) during the first hours of maturation in the presence of hemisections (HSs) of the follicular wall (control -ve). The addition of 5.0-mM L-arg increased (P < 0.05) the percentage of oocytes at the germinal vesicle breakdown stage after 7 hours of cultivation compared with control -ve. All concentrations of L-arg (2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 mM) increased the percentage of oocytes that reached the metaphase I (MI) at 15 hours (P < 0.05) but do not affect the progression from MI to metaphase II (P > 0.05) at 22 hours. All concentrations of L-arg tested increased (P < 0.05) the percentage of cumulus cells with plasma membrane integrity at 22 hours of cultivation. L-arginine did not change (P > 0.05) the nitrate/nitrite, P4, and E2 concentrations in relation to control -ve at any of the times tested. In immature COCs, immediately after being removed from the follicles (0 hours), the intracellular concentration of cGMP in the control -ve and treatment with 5-mM L-arg progressively decreased (P < 0.05) after the first hour of cultivation; however, COCs treated with 5.0-mM L-arg had higher concentrations of cGMP at 1 hour of cultivation (P < 0.05). The cAMP concentration of COCs supplemented or not with 5.0-mM L-arg progressively increased until 3 hours of cultivation and at, 6 hours, decreased (P < 0.05). The results show, in using this system, that (1) the mechanisms that give the oocyte the ability to restart the meiosis until MI after adding 5.0-mM L-arg do not involve changes in the concentration of nitrate/nitrite, P4, and E2 in the culture medium and (2) L-arg acts on a pathway that involves changing the cGMP concentration but does not involve changing cAMP concentration. More studies are needed to assess whether the observed effects of L-arg during IVM using this system are via NO or not and what the role is in increasing the viability of cumulus cells in the resumption and progression of meiosis until MI.

Abstract
The growth of the Gyr breed in Brazil in terms of genetic gain for milk, along with conditions for market, has led to the use of ovum pick-up in vitro production (OPU-IVP) as a leader in biotechnology for the multiplication of genetic material. The aim of this study was to investigate phenotypic correlations between OPU-IVP-linked characteristics and pregnancy rates registered in an embryo transfer program using Gyr cows as oocyte donors. Data collected from 211 OPU sessions and 298 embryo transfers during the years 2012 and 2013 were analyzed and statistical analysis was performed. Estimates of simple Pearson correlations were calculated for NVcoc and PVcoc (number and proportion of viable cumulus-oocyte complexes, respectively); NcleavD4 and PcleavD4 (number and proportion of cleaved embryos on day 4 of culture, respectively); NTembD7 and PTembD7 (number and proportion of transferable embryos on day 7 of culture, respectively); NPrD30 and PPrD30 (number and proportion of pregnancies 30 days after transfer, respectively); and NPrD60 and PPrD60 (number and proportion of pregnancies 60 days after transfer, respectively). Moderate to moderately high correlations were found for all numerical characteristics, suggesting these as the most suitable parameters for selection of oocyte donors in Gyr programs. NVcoc is proposed as a selection trait due to positive correlations with percentage traits and pregnancy rates 30 and 60 days after transfer.

Abstract
Cryptosporidium sp. is an opportunistic protozoan parasite that may infect animals and humans, causing asymptomatic to severe intestinal infections, according to the immunological response of the hosts. The present work had the objective to determine the risk factors involved on Cryptosporidium sp. infection in dogs from Campos dos Goytacazes City on Rio de Janeiro State; and the frequency of this protozoan. Independent of sex, age, consistency and health of dogs, 200 feces samples were analyzed. Data were obtained using a questionnaire with the dogs owners. Feces were analyzed with an optical microscope after the concentration by modified Ritchie technique and coloring with the modified Ziehl-Neelsen technique. Association tests through c2 and multiple logistic regression analysis were made. Among the 200 dogs analyzed, 90 (45%) showed oocysts of Cryptosporidium genus in the feces. The conclusion was that the occurrence of asymptomatic cryptosporidiosis in dogs from the City of Campos dos Goytacazes is high. The risk factors involved are the social level of the owner, presence of cats and sporadic stage of vomiting and diarrhea. The final model detected the risk factors by social level, other animals, regions of the city, kind of residence, sporadic stage of vomiting and diarrhea.

Abstract
Nitric oxide (NO) is a highly reactive free radical involved in intra- and intercellular signaling in various stages of reproduction. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the addition of sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a NO donor, on nuclear and cytoplasmic in vitro maturation of bovine oocytes. Analysis of variance was conducted and the means were compared by t test at a level of 5%. Low (10(-7) and 10(-9)M) and intermediate (10(-5)M) concentrations of SNP had no significant effect on nuclear maturation, however, when a greater concentration of SNP (10(-3)M) was added, oocytes remained in metaphase I (MI) after 24 h culture (P<0.05) and did not show cumulus expansion. To evaluate if this effect was reversible and if a retardation or inhibition had occurred in the progression from MI to MII, oocytes were cultured in presence of 10(-3)M of SNP for 24 h followed by culture for an additional 24 h in medium with or without SNP. After 48 h, the oocytes remained in MI even when the medium was changed at 24 h with or without SNP. The kinetics of nuclear maturation was assessed to evaluate if there had been or not a retardation in the progression of meiosis with the concentration of 10(-3)M SNP. This concentration delayed germinal vesicle breakdown (VGBD) at 8 h of culture (P<0.05), and at 12 h there was no significant difference between the control and the treated group. The concentrations that did not induce alterations in nuclear maturation were evaluated for cytoplasmic maturation. The concentration of 10(-5)M improved the percentage of peripheral cortical granules (P<0.05), and significantly increased the percentage of blastocysts. These results demonstrate that SNP at greater concentrations (10(-3)M) has a cytotoxic effect, but at intermediate (10(-5)M) concentrations it increases blastocyst rates. NO exhibits a dual effect on bovine oocytes, inhibits (10(-3)M of SNP) nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation or stimulates (10(-5)M of SNP) cytoplasmic maturation, depending on concentration in the culture medium.

Abstract

Abstract
Genetic, environmental and phenotypic correlations between libido, testicular measurements, body weight and semen traits were estimated by multiple-trait-restricted maximum likelihood (MTDFREML) under animal models. Reproductive records, collected from 1992 to 1997, of 288 Nellore bulls were used. Estimates of heritability for libido unadjusted, adjusted for scrotal circumference and adjusted for body weight, were 0.34 +/- 0.10, 0.31 +/- 0.10, and 0.19 +/- 0.11, respectively. Genetic correlations between libido and body weight, scrotal circumference, testis length, testis width, testis volume and testis consistency were, respectively, 0.69, -0.43, -0.31, -0.16, 0.10, 0.87, and between libido and semen volume, sperm motility, vigor, gross motility, major, minor and total defects were, respectively, 0.71, 0.51, 0.12, 0.16, 0.31, 0.26 and 0.43. Results suggested that selection for libido would be effective and that it would lead to desirable correlated response for scrotal circumference, physical and morphological semen traits and undesirable correlated response in body weight.

Abstract
Four functions to characterize scrotal circumference (SC) growth in Nellore bulls were compared to identify which was the most suitable for biological interpretation. Nellore bulls (n = 532), born between September and December of 1992 to 1994 were used in the study. Measurements were made on fixed dates in January, April, July and October of each year. At the time of SC measurements, the ages of the bulls ranged from 200 to 1300 d. The functions used to describe the data were: Brody, SC = A (1 - B exp -kt); Logistic, SC = A/(1 + B exp -kt); Gompertz, SC = A exp(-B exp -kt) and Richards SC = A (1 + B exp -kt)m, where SC is the scrotal circumference at t days of age, A is the estimated SC at maturity, B is the integration constant established by the initial values of SC and t, k is the maturity constant, which equals the ratio between the maximum rate of growth and SC at maturity; m is the inflection point parameter for Richards function, which did not converge. The Brody, Gompertz and Logistic functions fitted the data in a similar fashion, with similar values for the statistics EMS and R2, and they reached convergence with similar computational costs. The Logistic function presented the best pattern of average prediction error, and therefore, it was selected for biological interpretation. For the Logistic function, estimated SC at maturity (A) was 37.95 cm at 72 mo of age. The maturity index (k) was .11 cm, and the inflection point (time of maximum growth) was reached at 13.09 mo of age at an average SC of 18.97 cm.

Abstract
Mixed model methodology under univariate and bivariate animal models was used to estimate genetic parameters of scrotal circumference (SC) unadjusted (h2U) and adjusted (h2A) for body weight, from field data on 875 Nellore males sired by 80 bulls. The models included random effect of animal, the fixed effects of age of dam, year of birth, and month and year of measurement, and the covariate age of the animal. In addition, one of the models also included the covariate body weight. Using univariate models, SC estimates of h2U were 0.18, 0.65, 0.77 and 0.60, and of h2A they were 0.15, 0.60, 0.71 and 0.50, at 9, 12, 18 and 24 m.o. of age, respectively. Bivariate estimates of heritability ranged from 0.18 to 0.77 for h2U, and from 0.13 to 0.70 for h2A. The results suggest that it would be better to consider unadjusted SC rather than adjusted SC in selection programs. Bivariate body weight estimates of heritability ranged from 0.15 to 0.45. Genetic correlations between SC and body weight ranged from 0.58 to 0.71 when body weight was not included in the model, and from 0.33 to 0.64 when body weight was included. These results suggest that simultaneous selection for body weight and SC is possible in Nellore cattle.
