Abstract
Multimodal neuroimaging using electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) provides complementary views of cortical processes, including those related to auditory processing. However, current multimodal approaches often overlook potential insights that can be gained from nonlinear interactions between electrical and hemodynamic signals. Here, we explore electro-vascular phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) between low-frequency hemodynamic and high-frequency electrical oscillations during an auditory task. We further apply a temporally embedded canonical correlation analysis (tCCA)-general linear model (GLM)-based correction approach to reduce the possible effect of systemic physiology on fNIRS recordings. Before correction, we observed significant PAC between fNIRS and broadband EEG in the frontal region (p ≪ 0.05), β (p ≪ 0.05) and γ (p = 0.010) in the left temporal/temporoparietal (left auditory; LA) region, and γ (p = 0.032) in the right temporal/temporoparietal (right auditory; RA) region across the entire dataset. Significant differences in PAC across conditions (task versus silence) were observed in LA (p = 0.023) and RA (p = 0.049) γ sub-bands and in lower frequency (5-20 Hz) frontal activity (p = 0.005). After correction, significant fNIRS-γ-band PAC was observed in the frontal (p = 0.021) and LA (p = 0.025) regions, while fNIRS-α (p = 0.003) and fNIRS-β (p = 0.041) PAC were observed in RA. Decreased frontal γ-band (p = 0.008) and increased β-band (p ≪ 0.05) PAC were observed during the task. These outcomes represent the first characterization of electro-vascular PAC between fNIRS and EEG signals during an auditory task, providing insights into electro-vascular coupling in auditory processing.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop an on-farm dairy cattle welfare assessment protocol at different-sized farms in two major commercial dairy farming states in India. For developing the protocol, the basic 'Integrative Diagnostic System Welfare' (IDSW) framework was modified to include
three welfare components (animal housing and other facilities; feeds and feeding practices; and animal health, performance and behaviour) and 20 welfare indicators (ten resource- and ten animal-based). Each indicator was weighed on a value scale with an aggregate welfare score of 100. The
protocol was tested for feasibility, validity and reliability using Cronbach's alpha and Guttman split-half coefficient. Using this protocol, welfare was assessed on 60 commercial farms in Punjab and 50 in Haryana, divided into three adult herd sizes: small (S < 20), medium (M = 21–50)
and large (L > 50). Welfare scores in L (76.60 [± 1.70]) and M (68.40 [± 2.27]) sized herds in Punjab were higher than in S herds (60.80 [± 2.77]). In Haryana these were higher in L (68.1 [± 1.18]) than in S (60.50 [± 2.74]) and M (59.35 [± 2.17])
sized herds. The aggregate average welfare score was higher in Punjab (68.60 [± 1.49]) than in Haryana (62.65 [± 2.02]). Welfare at more than 75% of the farms in Punjab and more than 50% of those in Haryana was judged as 'acceptable.' Six welfare indicators in Punjab
and eight in Haryana were most compromised. Four indicators (microclimate protection measures, availability of milking parlour, cow cleanliness and reproductive efficiency) were the most compromised indicators in both states. To improve dairy cattle welfare in these states we recommend an
emphasis on improving housing and feeding conditions, especially at small and medium farms, along with heat stress amelioration measures and improving hygiene and reproductive efficiency at all farms.

Abstract
Electrical resistance usually originates from lattice imperfections. However, even a perfect lattice has a fundamental resistance limit, given by the Landauer1 conductance caused by a finite number of propagating electron modes. This resistance, shown by Sharvin2 to appear at the contacts of electronic devices, sets the ultimate conduction limit of non-interacting electrons. Recent years have seen growing evidence of hydrodynamic electronic phenomena3-18, prompting recent theories19,20 to ask whether an electronic fluid can radically break the fundamental Landauer-Sharvin limit. Here, we use single-electron-transistor imaging of electronic flow in high-mobility graphene Corbino disk devices to answer this question. First, by imaging ballistic flows at liquid-helium temperatures, we observe a Landauer-Sharvin resistance that does not appear at the contacts but is instead distributed throughout the bulk. This underpins the phase-space origin of this resistance-as emerging from spatial gradients in the number of conduction modes. At elevated temperatures, by identifying and accounting for electron-phonon scattering, we show the details of the purely hydrodynamic flow. Strikingly, we find that electron hydrodynamics eliminates the bulk Landauer-Sharvin resistance. Finally, by imaging spiralling magneto-hydrodynamic Corbino flows, we show the key emergent length scale predicted by hydrodynamic theories-the Gurzhi length. These observations demonstrate that electronic fluids can dramatically transcend the fundamental limitations of ballistic electrons, with important implications for fundamental science and future technologies.

Abstract
Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has been established as an informative modality for understanding the hemodynamic-metabolic correlates of cortical auditory processing. To date, such knowledge has shown broad clinical applications in the diagnosis, treatment, and intervention procedures in disorders affecting auditory processing; however, exploration of the hemodynamic response to auditory tasks is yet incomplete. This holds particularly true in the context of auditory event-related fNIRS experiments, where preliminary work has shown the presence of valid responses while leaving the need for more comprehensive explorations of the hemodynamic correlates of event-related auditory processing. In this study, we apply an individual-specific approach to characterize fNIRS-based hemodynamic changes during an auditory task in healthy adults. Oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO2) concentration change time courses were acquired from eight participants. Independent component analysis (ICA) was then applied to isolate individual-specific class discriminative spatial filters, which were then applied to HbO2 time courses to extract auditory-related hemodynamic features. While six of eight participants produced significant class discriminative features before ICA-based spatial filtering, the proposed method identified significant auditory hemodynamic features in all participants. Furthermore, ICA-based filtering improved correlation between trial labels and extracted features in every participant. For the first time, this study demonstrates hemodynamic features important in experiments exploring auditory processing as well as the utility of individual-specific ICA-based spatial filtering in fNIRS-based feature extraction techniques in auditory experiments. These outcomes provide insights for future studies exploring auditory hemodynamic characteristics and may eventually provide a baseline framework for better understanding auditory response dysfunctions in clinical populations.

Abstract
Tuna fish is a popular food because of its nutritional value and taste. Demand for various species of tuna increases over time, necessitating the development of a system to sort tuna fish into distinct species in export sectors in order to accelerate the process. The work proposes an automated tuna classification system based on split octonion network. The images are initially preprocessed and divided into region images. Each region image is applied to a split octonion network with eleven layers. In addition, a split octonion channel attention module is presented, which is fed to the last two convolutional layers. The features from the three octonion networks are fused and applied to a series of dense layers. In the last layer, a softmax classifier is utilized for final classification. Results show that the proposed region-based split octonion network with attention module gives an accuracy of 98.01% on tuna database. The region-based tuna classification model is fine-tuned for the categorization of six species from QUT-FishBase dataset and Fish-Pak dataset. The system shows accuracies of 97.83% and 98.17% on QUT-FishBase and Fish-Pak datasets, respectively. The proposed methodology is also compared with existing approaches using a variety of evaluation criteria.

Abstract
PURPOSE Calcium sensing receptor (CaSR), on the surface of normal parathyroid cells, is essential for maintaining serum calcium levels. The normal pattern of CaSR immunostaining remains undefined and is presumptively circumferential. Given the physiological variation in serum calcium, we postulated that CaSR expression could not be uniformly circumferential. Also, cytoplasmic expression has not been evaluated either in normal or pathological tissues. We studied normal parathyroid tissues derived from forensic autopsies and those rimming parathyroid adenomas for membranous and cytoplasmic CaSR immunoexpression. Results were compared with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) to look for any pathogenetic implications. MATERIALS AND METHODS We evaluated 34 normal parathyroid tissues from 11 autopsies, 30 normal rims, 45 parathyroid adenoma, 10 hyperplasia, and 7 carcinoma cases. Membranous expression was categorized complete/incomplete and weak/moderate/strong; scored using Her2/Neu and Histo-scores; predominant pattern noted. Cytoplasmic expression was categorized negative/weak/moderate/strong; predominant intensity noted. RESULTS Normal autopsy-derived parathyroid tissues were Her2/Neu 3 + , but incomplete membranous staining predominated in 85%. Their immune-scores were significantly more than the cases (p < < 0.05). The mean histo-score of normal rims was intermediate between the two (p < < 0.05). Cytoplasmic expression was strong in all autopsy-derived tissues, weak/negative in hyperplasia (100%), moderate in 16% adenomas, and 43% carcinomas. CONCLUSIONS Normal autopsy-derived parathyroid tissues showed strong but predominantly incomplete membranous expression. Surface CaSR expression decreased in PHPT and is probably an early event in parathyroid adenoma, seen even in normal rims. Whether there is a defect in CaSR trafficking from the cytoplasm to the cell surface in adenoma and carcinoma needs further evaluation.

Abstract
Ultrasound imaging is most commonly used and secure medical diagnostic approach its low cost, noninvasive nature of real time image construction. However because of signal dependant noise existence, ultrasound imaging gets degraded: A baseline phase in image processing is removing diverse
noise types from image. Noise sources of image generally occur during storage, transmission and image acquisition. Image denoising is an issue determined in diverse computer vision and image processing crisis. There are diverse prevailing approaches to denoise image. The significant property
of finest denoising of an image model has to remove noise while preserving edges. For wavelet thresholding paradigm, Fisz transformation method is brought-in in the current work. Furthermore, it has problem with poor denoising performance and hence the quality of image is minimized considerably.
In this paper, Improved Threshold based Wavelet Transformation Method (ITWTM) is suggested to rectify above mentioned crisis, to enhance the better denoising images, the soft threshold method is introduced. To enhance visual quality of noisy image, it simply changes coefficients with help
of softthresholding method. Speckle noise, additive noise, Gaussian noise and multiplicative noise factors affect the ultrasound images, which minimize the image quality and effects the human interpretation. So, ITWTM helps to minimize the noise rate considerably for the provided US image.
The experimental result confirms that the proposed ITWTM provides better performance with respect to higher PSNR, SSIM and lower MSE, execution time rather than the previous Fisz transformation and DWT methods.

Abstract
We report details of an experimental platform implemented at the National Ignition Facility to obtain in situ powder diffraction data from solids dynamically compressed to extreme pressures. Thin samples are sandwiched between tamper layers and ramp compressed using a gradual increase in the drive-laser irradiance. Pressure history in the sample is determined using high-precision velocimetry measurements. Up to two independently timed pulses of x rays are produced at or near the time of peak pressure by laser illumination of thin metal foils. The quasi-monochromatic x-ray pulses have a mean wavelength selectable between 0.6 Å and 1.9 Å depending on the foil material. The diffracted signal is recorded on image plates with a typical 2θ x-ray scattering angle uncertainty of about 0.2° and resolution of about 1°. Analytic expressions are reported for systematic corrections to 2θ due to finite pinhole size and sample offset. A new variant of a nonlinear background subtraction algorithm is described, which has been used to observe diffraction lines at signal-to-background ratios as low as a few percent. Variations in system response over the detector area are compensated in order to obtain accurate line intensities; this system response calculation includes a new analytic approximation for image-plate sensitivity as a function of photon energy and incident angle. This experimental platform has been used up to 2 TPa (20 Mbar) to determine the crystal structure, measure the density, and evaluate the strain-induced texturing of a variety of compressed samples spanning periods 2-7 on the periodic table.

Abstract
Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a re-emerging mosquito-borne zoonotic flaviviral disease. Swine sero-convert 2-3 weeks before infection occurs in humans and thus serves as a suitable sentinel for JE surveillance and outbreak prediction in human population. The present study was conducted with the objective of developing a lateral flow assay (LFA) for detecting JEV antibodies in swine sera. Three different formats were tried using recombinant NS1 protein as antigen in order to select the best format. In format I, gold nanoparticles were conjugated with antigen followed by spotting of antigen on NCM as test line and anti-antigen IgG on NCM as control line. In format II, gold nanoparticles were conjugated with antigen followed by spotting of staphylococcal protein A as test line and anti-antigen IgG as control line. Format III used gold nanoparticles conjugated with goat anti-pig IgG followed by spotting of antigen as test line and pig IgG as control line. Amongst the three formats, format II was found to be superior with 100% relative diagnostic sensitivity and 100% relative diagnostic specificity during monsoon and post-monsoon period. A panel of 500 field swine serum samples was tested using format II which revealed sero-positivity of 15.6%, and the format was found suitable to screen swine serum samples during monsoon and post-monsoon period.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Bile acids (BAs) traversing the enterohepatic circulation (EHC) influence important metabolic pathways. By determining individual serum BAs in relation to markers of metabolic activity, we explored how diurnal variations in their EHC relate to hepatic metabolism in normal humans. METHODS Serum BAs, fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF19), lipoproteins, glucose/insulin and markers of cholesterol and BA syntheses were monitored for 32 h in 8 healthy males. Studies were conducted at basal state and during initiation of cholestyramine treatment, with and without atorvastatin pretreatment. Time series cross-correlation analysis, Bayesian structural model and Granger causality test were applied. RESULTS Bile acids synthesis dominated daytime, and cholesterol production at night. Conjugated BAs peaked after food intake, with subsequent FGF19 elevations. BA synthesis was reduced following conjugated BA and FGF19 peaks. Cholestyramine reduced conjugated BAs and FGF19, and increased BA and cholesterol production; the latter effects attenuated by atorvastatin. The relative importance of FGF19 vs. conjugated BAs in this feedback inhibition could not be discriminated. Unconjugated BAs displayed one major peak late at night/early morning that was unrelated to FGF19 and BA synthesis, and abolished by cholestyramine. The normal suppression of serum triglycerides, glucose and insulin observed at night was attenuated by cholestyramine. CONCLUSIONS Conjugated and unconjugated BAs have asynchronous rhythms of EHC in humans. Postprandial transintestinal flux of conjugated BAs increases circulating FGF19 levels and suppresses BA synthesis. Unconjugated BAs peak late at night, indicating a non-postprandial diurnal change in human gut microflora, the physiological implications of which warrants further study.

Abstract
Goat farming in Pakistan depends on indigenous breeds that have adapted to specific agro-ecological conditions. Pakistan has a rich resource of goat breeds, and the genetic diversity of these goat breeds is largely unknown. In this study, genetic diversity and population structure were characterized from seven indigenous goat breeds using the goat 50K SNP chip. The genetic diversity analysis showed that Bugi toori goats have the highest inbreeding level, consistent with the highest linkage disequilibrium, lowest diversity and long run of heterozygosity segments. This indicates that this breed should be prioritized in future conservation activities. The population structure analysis revealed four fairly distinct clusters (including Bugi toori, Bari, Black Tapri and some Kamori) and three other breeds that are seemingly the results of admixture between these or related groups (some Kamori, Pateri, Tapri and White Tapri). The selection signatures were evaluated in each breed. A total of 2508 putative selection signals were reported. The 26 significant windows were identified in more than four breeds, and selection signatures spanned several genes that directly or indirectly influence traits included coat colour variation (KIT), reproduction (BMPR1B, GNRHR, INSL6, JAK2 and EGR4), body size (SOCS2), ear size (MSRB3) and milk composition (ABCG2, SPP1, CSN1S2, CSN2, CSN3 and PROLACTIN).

Abstract
Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus and dengue virus are closely related flaviviruses but interaction between them is scarcely studied in humans. The objective of this study was to compare the outcome of JE patients who are positive and negative for dengue IgG antibodies. Patients of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) fulfilling predecided inclusion and exclusion criteria underwent a detailed standardized workup incorporating JE IgM testing in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or serum. Dengue IgG in serum was tested in all. Outcomes and clinical features were compared between JE patients who were dengue IgG positive and negative in hospital and after 3 months. A total of 182 patients of JE were enrolled over 3 seasons. After excluding equivocal cases, hospital outcome was compared between 105 dengue IgG-positive and 50 dengue IgG-negative patients. Dengue IgG-positive patients had a significantly better outcome (relative risk 1.4; 95% confidence interval 1.1-1.8). On follow-up after 3 months, again, outcome was significantly better among 95 dengue IgG-positive patient than 47 dengue IgG-negative patients (relative risk 1.3; 95% confidence interval 1.01-1.8). Presence of pre-existing dengue IgG antibodies in JE patients is associated with improved outcomes.

Abstract
Pore formation in food samples is a common physical phenomenon observed during dehydration processes. The pore evolution during drying significantly affects the physical properties and quality of dried foods. Therefore, it should be taken into consideration when predicting transport processes in the drying sample. Characteristics of pore formation depend on the drying process parameters, product properties and processing time. Understanding the physics of pore formation and evolution during drying will assist in accurately predicting the drying kinetics and quality of food materials. Researchers have been trying to develop mathematical models to describe the pore formation and evolution during drying. In this study, existing porosity models are critically analysed and limitations are identified. Better insight into the factors affecting porosity is provided, and suggestions are proposed to overcome the limitations. These include considerations of process parameters such as glass transition temperature, sample temperature, and variable material properties in the porosity models. Several researchers have proposed models for porosity prediction of food materials during drying. However, these models are either very simplistic or empirical in nature and failed to consider relevant significant factors that influence porosity. In-depth understanding of characteristics of the pore is required for developing a generic model of porosity. A micro-level analysis of pore formation is presented for better understanding, which will help in developing an accurate and generic porosity model.

Abstract
AIM There are various therapeutic modalities of treatment for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, but with certain limitations, hence, investigating the scope of combined therapeutic approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this article, cellular toxicity, apoptosis and expression of mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathway proteins were investigated in Raji cells preincubated with doxorubicin followed by (131)I-rituximab (rituximab radiolabeled with Iodine-131) treatment. RESULTS It was found that the (131)I-rituximab in combination with doxorubicin showed a higher amount of cell toxicity and apoptosis compared to respective controls. Expression of anti-apoptotic protein (B-cell lymphoma-extra-large) was downregulated and cleavage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase, a marker of apoptosis was higher in cells treated with doxorubicin (2 μg/mL) and 131 I-rituximab (P ≤ 0.05). Moreover, in these cells the basal level of expression of p42/44 and p38 were increased while its phosphorylation was decreased. CONCLUSION These results suggest that doxorubicin has the potential to sensitize (131)I-rituximab induced cell death in Raji cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Susceptibility to lung cancer has been shown to be modulated by inheritance of polymorphic genes encoding cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) and glutathione S transferases (GSTM1 and GSTT1), which are involved in the bioactivation and detoxification of environmental toxins. This might be a factor in the variation in lung cancer incidence with ethnicity. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted a case-control study of 218 northern Indian lung cancer patients along with 238 healthy controls, to assess any association between CYP1A1, GSTM1 and GSTT1 polymorphisms, either separately or in combination, with the likelihood of development of Lung cancer in our population. RESULTS We observed a significant difference in the GSTT1 null deletion frequency in this population when compared with other populations (OR=1.87, 95%CI: 1.25-2.80-0.73, P=0.002). However, GSTM1 null genotype was found associated with lung cancer in the non-smoking subgroup. (P=0.170). CONCLUSIONS Our study showed the GSTT1 null polymorphism to be associated with smoking-induced lung cancer and the GSTM1 null polymorphism to have a link with non-smoking related lung cancer.

Abstract
We describe an unusual case of viper (Daboia russelii) bite in a 48-year-old man from the state of Karnataka in southern India. He presented in a hypotensive state with a left lower motor neuron-type of facial palsy, necrosis at the site of the bite and acute renal failure. His laboratory parameters revealed renal failure and deranged coagulation parameters. He was treated with intravenous antibiotics and polyvalent antiserum venom, and dialysed in view of the renal failure. His renal function and coagulation abnormalities improved, and the facial palsy recovered with the treatment. The snake bite located away from the face, the facial palsy occurring a few hours after the venom injection and the rapid recovery following antivenin administration, support that the palsy was a direct result of systemic envenomation. To the best of our knowledge, an isolated lower motor neuron-type of facial palsy as a manifestation of systemic toxicity of a viper bite, has not been previously reported.

Abstract
Human malignant tumors are characterized by abnormal proliferation resulting from alterations in cell cycle-regulatory mechanisms. The regulatory pathways controlling cell cycle phases include several oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes that display a range of abnormalities with potential usefulness as markers of evolution or treatment response in ovarian cancer. This review summarizes the current knowledge about these aberrations in malignant tumors of the ovary. We sought to divide cell cycle-regulatory genes into four subgroups on the basis of their predominant role in a specific phase or during the transition between two phases of the cell cycle.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to develop high-throughput assays for the analysis of major chondrocyte functions that are important in osteoarthritis (OA) pathogenesis and methods for high-level gene expression and analysis in primary human chondrocytes. METHODS In the first approach, complementary DNA (cDNA) libraries were constructed from OA cartilage RNA and full-length clones were selected. These cDNAs were transferred into a retroviral vector using Gateway Technology. Full-length clones were over-expressed in human articular chondrocytes (HAC) by retroviral-mediated gene transfer. The induction of OA-associated markers, including aggrecanase-1 (Agg-1), matrix metalloproteinase-13 (MMP-13), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), collagen IIA and collagen X was measured by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (QPCR). Induction of a marker gene was verified by independent isolation of 2-3 clones per gene, re-transfection followed by QPCR as well as nucleotide sequencing. In the second approach, whole cDNA libraries were transduced into chondrocytes and screened for chondrocyte cluster formation in three-dimensional agarose cultures. RESULTS Using green fluorescent protein (eGFP) as a marker gene, it was shown that the retroviral method has a transduction efficiency of >90%. A total of 40 verified hits were identified in the QPCR screen. The first set of 19 hits coordinately induced iNOS, COX-2, Agg-1 and MMP-13. The most potent of these genes were the tyrosine kinases Axl and Tyro-3, receptor interacting kinase-2 (RIPK2), tumor necrosis factor receptor 1A (TNFR1A), fibroblast growth factor (FGF) and its receptor FGFR, MUS81 endonuclease and Sentrin/SUMO-specific protease 3. The second set of seven hits induced both Agg-1 and MMP-13 but none of the other markers. Five of these seven genes regulate the phosphoinositide-3-kinase pathway. The most potently induced OA marker was iNOS. This marker was induced 20-500 fold by seven genes. Collagen IIA was also induced by seven genes, the most potent being transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta)-stimulated protein TSC22, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and splicing factor 3a. This screening assay did not identify inducers of collagen X. The second chondrocyte cluster formation screen identified 14 verified hits. Most of the genes inducing cluster formation were kinases. Additional genes had not been previously known to regulate chondrocyte cluster formation or any other chondrocyte function. CONCLUSIONS The methods developed in this study can be applied to screen for genes capable of inducing an OA-like phenotype in chondrocytes on a genome-wide scale and identify novel mediators of OA pathogenesis. Thus, coordinated functional genomic approaches can be used to delineate key genes and pathways activated in complex human diseases such as OA.

Abstract
The caspase family of protease is speculated to have a crucial role in apoptosis. The effect of treatment with Idarubicin (IDA) and Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), used alone or in combination, on the activation of Caspase-3 in canine Chronic Lymphatic Leukaemia (CLL) cells was investigated, in order to clarify the mechanism of chemo- and hormone-therapy mediated apoptosis. Caspase activity was determined by a quantitative fluorimetric assay. Apoptosis was monitored by propidium iodide (PI) and nucleosomes assay. Treatment of CLL cells for 24 h with MPA 5 microM did not significantly activate caspase-3 but its activity was increased almost 5-fold more with IDA 1 microM (P < 0.05) than control. Treatment of CLL cells with IDA 1 microM in equimolecular association with MPA was able to increase the activation of caspase-3 induced by IDA of the 61.2% (P < 0.05) in comparison with IDA alone. The activation of caspase-3 was confirmed evaluating apoptosis by PI and nucleosomes assay. Furthermore, both caspase-3 activation and apoptosis triggered by IDA alone or in combination with MPA were significantly inhibited by specific caspase-3 inhibitor AC-DEVD-CMK. These findings provide an explanation for IDA and MPA induced-apoptosis mechanism.

Abstract
CyclosporinA (CsA) is an immunosuppressive drug which induces severe adverse effects such as cardiotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. In several therapeutic protocols CsA is used in association with corticosteroids to obtain better therapeutic results. Recently, our studies showed that CsA increases blood pressure while inhibit Nitric Oxide (NO) production in vivo. In this study we evaluated in rat cardiomyocytes the effects of CsA, used alone or in association with Hydrocortisone (HY), on intracellular calcium concentration, NO production and lipid peroxidation (MDA level). Our results demonstrated that CsA increased intracellular calcium and such effect was dose-dependent. HY used alone, slightly decreased intracellular calcium, while dramatically reduced CsA-induced calcium fluxes. CsA (3.2 microM) increased lipid peroxidation and this effect was blunted by HY. Both CsA and HY inhibited NO production in rat cardiomyocytes acting on this pathway synergically. Our results demonstrated that in rat cardiomyocytes, CsA toxicity is due to a calcium overload, which in turn induce lipid peroxidation and determines oxidative stress-induced cell injury. Treatment with HY effectively inhibits CsA-induced toxicity, decreasing lipid peroxidation as well as calcium intracellular concentration. Our findings seem to suggest that glucocorticoids may be effective in reducing CsA-induced cardiotoxicity at concentrations which are consistent with current therapeutic doses.

Abstract
This study identified 17 matching serogroups of Vibrio cholerae belonging to serogroups other than O1 and O139 isolated from human cases and from the environment during a concurrent clinical and environmental study conducted in Calcutta, a cholera endemic area. Isolates within these matching serogroups were compared by various phenotypic and genotypic traits to determine if the environment was the source of the organisms associated with the disease. Clinical strains of V. cholerae were resistant to a greater number of drugs and exhibited multi-drug resistance compared with their environmental counterparts. Except for the presence of the genes for the El Tor haemolysin and the regulatory element ToxR in most of the strains of V. cholerae examined, non-O1, non-O139 V. cholerae strains lacked most of the other known virulence traits associated with toxigenic V. cholerae O1 or O139. Restriction fragment-length polymorphism of virulence-associated genes, ribotypes and DNA fingerprints of strains of matched serogroups showed considerable diversity, although some gene polymorphisms and ribotypes of a few strains of different serogroups were similar. It is concluded that despite sharing the same serogroup, environmental and clinical isolates were genetically heterogeneous and were of different lineages.

Abstract
Molecular methods are being frequently used for the study of soil microbial communities as majority of naturally occurring microbial populations are non-culturable. In the present study, we describe a protocol of DNA extraction from diverse soils using a combination of heat, enzyme (lysozyme) and guanidine thiocyanate. The efficacy of the procedure was evaluated in terms of yield, purity and duration of extraction. The protocol was effective for neutral, acidic as well as alkaline soils (pH range 4.5-8.5). The extracted soil DNA was observed with negligible shearing on agarose gel and the time taken for restriction digestion was very less. Further, the DNA extracted was almost completely devoid of contaminants and pure enough which could be used for PCR amplification and Southern hybridization.

Abstract
This article provides an overview of advances in understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms and regulation of intestinal absorption processes of vitamins. The vitamins covered are the water-soluble vitamins folic acid, cobalamin (vitamin B12), biotin, pantothenic acid, and thiamine (vitamin B1) and the lipid-soluble vitamin A. For folate, significant advances have been made in regard to i) digestion of dietary folate polyglutamates to folate monoglutamates by the cloning of the responsible enzyme; ii) identification of the cDNA responsible for the intestinal folate transporter; iii) delineation of intracellular mechanisms that regulate small intestinal folate uptake; and iv) identification and characterization of a specific, pH-dependent, carrier-mediated system for folate uptake at the luminal (apical) membrane of human colonocytes. Studies on cobalamine have focused on cellular and molecular characterization of the intrinsic factor and its receptor. Studies on biotin transport in the small intestine have shown that the uptake process is shared by another water-soluble vitamin, pantothenic acid. Furthermore, a Na-dependent, carrier-mediated biotin uptake system that is also shared with pantothenic acid has been identified at the apical membrane of human colonocytes. This carrier is believed to be responsible for the absorption of the bacterially synthesized biotin and pantothenic acid in the large intestine. Also, preliminary studies have reported the cloning of a biotin transporter from the small intestine. As for thiamine intestinal transport, a study has shown thiamine uptake by small intestinal biopsy specimens to be via a carrier-mediated, Na-independent mechanism, which appears to be up-regulated in thiamine deficiency. Studies on vitamin A intestinal absorption have shown the existence of a receptor-mediated mechanism for the uptake of retinol bound to retinol-binding protein in the small intestine of suckling rats. Another study has shown that retinoic acid increases the mRNA level of the cellular retinol binding protein II and the rate of retinol uptake by Caco-2 intestinal epithelial cells. The study suggested that retinoids may play a role in the regulation of vitamin A intestinal absorption.

Abstract
A set of biphenyl aminoacid building blocks has been synthesized. These were used to construct partially-peptidic combinatorial libraries as equimolar multi-component samples. Activity of members of this library as vitronectin receptor antagonists is described, together with SAR studies of the most active members. These studies illustrate several important features of combinatorial libraries.
