Abstract
OBJECTIVES To study the effects of cigarette smoke and vitamin E on the development of endometrial pinopods. STUDY DESIGN Eighteen female and 12 male Swiss albino mice, 12-14 weeks old, with a mean weight of 25g (standard deviation 5g) were used in this study. Female mice were divided into three equal groups. Every day for 10 weeks, mice in Group 1 (control group) received normal saline intraperitoneally; mice in Group 2 were exposed to smoke from 20 cigarettes/day using a smoke machine; and mice in Group 3 were exposed to smoke from 20 cigarettes/day using a smoke machine and also received 50mg/kg vitamin E intraperitoneally. After 10 weeks, vaginal smears were taken from the female mice and they were copulated with the 12 male Swiss albino mice on the day of oestrus. Day 0 was defined as the day on which sperm were detected in the vagina by smear test. Mice were killed at the end of Day 5, which was considered to represent the optimal day for implantation. The uteri were removed and the effects of cigarette smoke and vitamin E on the development of endometrial pinopods were studied using an electron microscope. RESULTS The endometrial tissue of the control group appeared morphologically normal, with short microvilli, cytoplasm and pinopods in the form of cytoplasm and cell membrane enlargements in patches. In total, 149 pinopods were counted in the control group using a scanning electron microscope (two histologists performed the analysis and were blinded to each other's findings). In the smoke-exposed group, the cytoplasmic structure was degenerated considerably, and fewer pinopods were counted (n=11). The number of pinopods in mice who were exposed to cigarette smoke and vitamin E (n=67) was significantly higher compared with the cigarette-exposed group (p=0.002), but considerably lower compared with the control group (p=0.002). CONCLUSION Smoke exposure led to a significant decrease in the development of endometrial pinopods. Vitamin E, an antioxidant, partially reversed the adverse effects of cigarette smoke. This suggests that cigarettes may have a negative effect on fertility by decreasing the number of pinopods. However, this negative effect can be reduced using vitamin E. More studies should be conducted to support this finding.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate ultrastructural and apoptotic changes occurring in the kidneys in fasting individuals and to examine the effects of histamine treatment at the electron-microscopic and immunohistochemical levels. METHODS Eighteen adult Wistar male rats were randomly divided into three groups (n=6 for each). Control group (1), fasting group (12 h) (2), and fasting+histamine injection (0.5 mg/kg) (3) group. Expression of caspase-3 and caspase-9 was determined in the tissue sections using immunohistochemical techniques. Quantitative data were obtained using H-SCORE, and statistical evaluations were then performed. The ultrastructure of the kidney tissues was examined using transmission electron microscopy. RESULTS Weak caspase-3 and caspase-9 expression was observed in the renal tubules and glomeruli in the control group, while immunoreactivity was more intense in the fasting group (p<0.05). In the fasting+histamine group, caspase-3 and caspase-9 immunostaining was significantly positive in both renal tubules and glomeruli (p<0.05). At electron microscopic evaluation, degenerative changes were seen in the glomeruli of the fasting group, as well as partial vacuolization and disruption at the basal foldings in the tubular epithelial cells. In the fasting+histamine group, in addition to significant dilatation of all glomerular capillaries, there were degenerative changes in all tubular and canalicular epithelial cells in the proximal tubules. CONCLUSIONS Fasting, an important metabolic stress factor, accompanied by histamine treatment may cause significant disruptions in the kidneys, particularly in the glomerular capillaries and proximal and distal tubules (Tab. 1, Fig. 2, Ref. 34).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Recently, it has been observed that weight loss is accelerated by human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) hormone preparation used for hypothalamic dysfunction in obesity treatment in both sexes. hCG is also used for in vitro fertilization and in treatment of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Our aim was to observe the ultrastructural changes caused by local injections of hCG made for purpose of weight loss and to present them to inform those receiving such therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS In our study, 10 obese female, 10 male obese, 10 non-obese female and 10 non-obese male rats were used. In each group, single dose of subcutaneous hCG injection has been applied to 7 rats for 5 weeks in 5 days of the week, and placebo has been applied to the remaining 3 rats. Following the injection, the tissues were evaluated morphologically, immunohistochemically and ultrastructurally. RESULTS Leptin immunoreactivity was similar in all groups. When the adipose tissue samples were examined under electron microscope, they were observed to exhibit normal structure with organelles located around the nuclei and nucleoli, and no distinctive features were found among the groups. CONCLUSIONS Administering hCG in addition to diet had no advantage on weight reduction in rats.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Methanol intoxication leads liver injury; in contrast melatonin and n-acetyl cysteine (NAC) are known to have protective effects on liver. AIM We aimed to investigate the ultrastructural effects of melatonin and NAC on livers of methanol intoxicated rats and compare potential protective effects of melatonin and NAC on their liver ultrastructure. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty-six adult male Wistar rats were carried out and were randomized to eight groups that have seven rats each: Control groups (C 6h, C 24h), treated with intragastric (i.g.) 1.0 ml saline; Methanol groups (M 6h, M 24h), treated with a dose of 3 g/kg i.g. methanol; Melatonin plus methanol groups (MEL+M 6h, MEL+M 24h), treated with dose of 10 mg/kg i.p melatonin immediately, following with a dose of 3 g/kg i.g. methanol; NAC plus methanol groups (NAC+M 6h, NAC+M 24h), treated with dose of 150 mg/kg, following with a dose of 3 g/kg i.g. methanol. 24 h group rats were given the same dose of melatonin and NAC 12 h after intoxication. Electron microscopy was used to evaluate histological changes in liver tissue at both 6th and 24th hour. RESULTS Histopathological damage was found to be higher in methanol-induced intoxicated rats compared with the controls. Extensive tubules of smooth endoplasmic reticulum, increased mitochondria, increased primary lysosomes and some marked openings of bile canaliculus were distinguished. Melatonin administration prevents liver injury especially in early hours and although not as effective as melatonin, NAC also prevents liver injury. CONCLUSIONS Melatonin is much more efficient than NAC, as well as significantly greater hepatoprotective effect against the liver injury secondary to the methanol intoxication.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mucinous cystadenomas of the liver are rare cystic neoplasms. The aim of this study was to assess management of a consecutive series of patients who underwent laparotomy for a suspected cystadenoma or cystadenocarcinoma. Secondly, the origin of ovarian stroma (OS) in mucinous liver cystadenomas was examined during early embryonic development. PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients diagnosed with mucinous liver cystadenomas or cystadenocarcinoma between 1994 and 2009 were included. Pathology specimens of patients who had undergone resection were reviewed for OS. Furthermore, in human embryos, morphology of the peritoneal epithelium and the position of the gonads in relation to the embryonic liver, pancreas and spleen were examined. RESULTS 15 surgically treated patients (13 female, 2 male) with hepatic tumors were eventually diagnosed with mucinous liver cystadenomas (12) or cystadenocarcinomas (3). OS was present in all female patients with mucinous cystadenoma or cystadenocarcinoma. The 2 male patients were rediagnosed as intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) or cystadenocarcinoma with features of IPMN. In human embryos, preceding their 'descent', the gonads are situated directly under the diaphragm, dorsal to the liver, the tail of the pancreas and the spleen, but separated from these organs by the peritoneal cavity. In contrast to the peritoneal epithelium elsewhere, the cells covering the gonads show an activated morphology. CONCLUSION For the diagnosis of mucinous liver cystadenoma, the presence of OS is prerequisite. This may be explained by the common origin of cystadenoma and OS in epithelial cells that cover the embryonic gonads in early fetal life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAS) may be activated during atrial fibrillation (AF). It is unclear whether RAS inhibition may facilitate cardioversion from AF and may prevent acute recurrence of AF (ARAF). We thus investigated the effect of pretreatment with RAS blockers on cardioversion success and ARAF in patients with AF scheduled for elective cardioversion. METHODS This observational study included 356 patients with AF undergoing elective pharmacological or electrical cardioversion. Of these patients, 135 were not included based on exclusion criteria and the remaining 221 patients were divided into RAS group (n = 116, 69 male) or non-RAS group (n = 105, 58 male) based on precardioversion use of any RAS blocker. RESULTS Hypertension, coronary heart disease and heart failure were more frequent in the RAS group. Cardioversion from AF was more successful in the RAS group than in the non-RAS group (%92 vs. %82, p = 0.026). The rate of ARAF was lower in RAS group compared with that in non-RAS group (17% vs. 31%, p = 0.026). In multivariate analysis, pretreatment with RAS blockers in addition to shock number and enlarged left atrium, independently predicted ARAF (OR: 0.33, 95% CI: 0.15-0.75, p = 0.008). Independent predictors of cardioversion success were shock number and left atrial dilatation, but not use of RAS blocker. CONCLUSION Precardioversion use of RAS blockers may reduce ARAF following successful cardioversion of AF, but did not improve electrical cardioversion.

Abstract
Methylphenidate hydrochloride (MPH), more commonly known as Ritalin, is a piperidine derivative and is the drug most often used to treat attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, one of the most common behavioural disorders of children and young adults. The aim of this study was to investigate dose-dependent immunohistochemical Dopamine 2 receptor (D2) expression and apoptosis in the rat cornea and cornea. In this study, 27 female pre-pubertal Wistar albino rats, divided into three different dose groups (5, 10 and 20 mg/kg) and their control groups, were used. They were treated orally with methylphenidate dissolved in saline solution for 5 days per week during 3 months. At the end of the third month, after perfusion fixation, eye tissue was removed. Paraffin sections were collected for immunohistochemical and terminal deoxynucleotidyl-transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labelling assay studies. In our study, we observed that the cornea D2 receptor reactivity showed a dose-related increase after MPH treatment, especially in basal cells of the epithelium and a dose-dependent decrease in the retinal ganglion cell which was statistically meaningful. Analysis of the cornea thickness results showed no meaningful difference between groups. Apoptotic cell number showed a meaningful increase in the high dose treated group compared to the other groups of the study. The data suggest that Ritalin has degenerative effect on the important functional part of the eye, such as cornea and retina and its activating dopaminergic mechanism via similar neuronal paths, functionally and structurally, to induce morphological changes. As a result, we believe that this morphological changes negatively effecting functional organization of the affected cornea and retina.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of sealing bile ducts by determining the adhesive strength of 2 different sealing agents, i.e. a fibrinogen-coated collagen patch (TachoSil) and a liquid fibrin sealant (Tissucol), in an experimental partial liver resection model in pigs. METHODS Pigs underwent laparotomy and partial resection of the left medial liver lobe. A 16-Ch silicon catheter was introduced into the common bile duct. Pigs were randomly assigned to 2 groups (n = 4 each). In group 1, TachoSil was applied on the resection surface, and in group 2 Tissucol was applied. After 2 h, pressure in the intrabiliary system was gradually increased. RESULTS No significant differences in the hemostasis times between TachoSil and Tissucol were observed (210.0 +/- 12.9 vs. 208.8 +/- 14.2 s; p = 0.9506). The pressure that could be resisted with Tissucol was significantly lower compared to TachoSil (77.0 +/- 8.6 vs. 131.8 +/- 16.3 mm Hg; p = 0.0405). CONCLUSIONS The application of TachoSil on the resection surface is equally effective in obtaining hemostasis and in sealing of biliary ducts as Tissucol. The adhesive strength of TachoSil on the resection surface, however, is superior to Tissucol.

Abstract
AIM Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury in patients undergoing coronary artery by-pass grafting (CABG) involves the reperfusion-induced conversion of reversible injured myocardial and endothelial cells. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has a potential being the minimization of the impact of reperfusion injury. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of intravenous NAC on periprocedural myocardial injury after CABG. METHODS The population of this prospective-randomized, double blind, placebo controlled study consisted of 40 patients undergoing on-pump CABG. All the patients were treated with standard medical therapy and eligible patients were randomized to NAC group (N.=19; intravenous infusion for 1 hour before the procedure at a dose of 50 mg/kg, followed by intravenous infusion for 48 hours after the operation at a dose of 50 mg/kg/day) and placebo (saline) group (N.=21). The study drug and placebo infusions were set to infuse at the same rate. RESULTS Demographic and procedural variables were similar in the both groups (All P>0.05). Creatine kinase MB isoform (CK-MB) mass levels did not significantly differ between the groups at both preoperative and postoperative periods. Similarly, cTnT levels were similar in the groups at all periods. Eight patients in the NAC group and 7 in the placebo group had increased CK-MB >3 times normal value. However, only 3 patients in the NAC group experienced CK-MB>5 times normal value. CONCLUSION Results of this study indicated that periprocedural use of NAC as intravenously did not attenuate myocardial damage after on-pump CABG surgery.

Of 185 patients who had undergone resection of proximal bile ducts on suspicion of hilar cholangiocarcinoma between January 1984 and June 2005, 32 (17·3 per cent) had a benign bile duct stricture on histopathological examination. After re-evaluation, further immunohistochemical analysis was performed on specimens from patients with features of autoimmune-like disease.
Results
The periductal stroma in 15 patients showed features of autoimmune-like disease (diffuse, moderate to severe lymphoplasmacytic infiltration with marked fibrosis). Abundant IgG4-positive plasma cell infiltration around the bile duct lesions was seen in two of these. Although not significant, patients with features of autoimmune-like disease on histological changes showed a higher incidence of recurrent biliary complications than those without (P = 0·250).
Conclusion
Features of autoimmune-like bile duct disease were seen in almost half (15 of 32) of patients with benign hilar strictures resected for presumed hilar cholangiocarcinoma. Frank IgG4-related sclerosing disease was found in only two of the 15 patients with autoimmune-like bile duct disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Bile leakage after partial liver resection still is a common complication and is associated with substantial morbidity and even mortality. METHODS A total of 234 consecutive liver resections without biliary reconstruction, performed between January 1992 and December 2004, were analyzed for postoperative bile leakage. RESULTS Postoperative bile leakage occurred in 6.8% of patients (16/234). In univariate analysis, male gender (p = 0.037), major liver resection (p = 0.004), right-sided hepatectomy (p = 0.005), prolonged operation time (p = 0.001), intraoperative blood loss >500 ml (p = 0.009), red cell transfusion (p = 0.02), tumor size (p = 0.026), duration of vascular occlusion (p = 0.03) and surgical irradicality (p = 0.001) were risk factors. No independent risk factors were associated with bile leakage after liver resection. Bile leakage originated from the resection plane in 10 patients (63%). Endoscopic biliary decompression was performed in 9 patients as initial treatment, and percutaneous drainage of the bile collection was used in 4 patients. Bile leakage resolved spontaneously in 3 patients. CONCLUSIONS Bile leakage is a persisting complication and in this study occurred in 6.8% of patients after partial liver resection. Percutaneous drainage of bile collection with or without endoscopic biliary decompression are effective interventions in the management of most cases of bile leakage.

Abstract
Methylphenidate, more commonly known as Ritalin, is a piperidine derivative and is the drug most often used to treat attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, one of the most common behavioural disorders of children and young adults. Our aims were to investigate dose-dependent immunohistochemical D2 expression and ultrastructural changes of the rat heart tissue, and to demonstrate possible toxicity of the long-term and high dose use of the methylphenidate. In this study, 27 female pre-pubertal Wistar albino rats, divided into three different dose groups (5, 10 and 20 mg/kg) and their control groups, were used. They were treated orally with methylphenidate dissolved in saline solution for 5 days/week during 3 months. At the end of the third month, after perfusion fixation, left ventricle of cardiac tissue was removed. Paraffin, semi-thin and thin sections were collected and immunohistochemical, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated Dig-dUTP nick end labelling assay and ultrastructural studies were performed. In conclusion, we believe that Ritalin is dose-related affecting dopaminergic system to increase heart rhythm and contraction. Thus, this drug may cause degenerative ultrastructural changes in mitochondrial path.

Abstract
Flotation studies were carried out to investigate the removal of heavy metals such as copper (II), zinc (II), chromium (III) and silver (I) from waste waters. Various parameters such as pH, collector and frother concentrations and airflow rate were tested to determine the optimum flotation conditions. Sodium dodecyl sulfate and hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide were used as collectors. Ethanol and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) were used as frothers. Metal removal reached about 74% under optimum conditions at low pH. At basic pH it became as high as 90%, probably due to the contribution from the flotation of metal precipitates.

Abstract
We investigated the day-night differences in intestinal oxidative-injury and the inflammatory response following total body (TB) or abdominopelvic (AP) irradiation, and the influence of melatonin administration on tissue injury induced by radiation. Rats (male Wistar, weighing 220-280 g) in the irradiated groups were exposed to a dose of 8 Gy to the TB or AP region in the morning (resting period - 1 h after light onset) or evening (activity span - 13 h after light onset). Vehicle or melatonin was administered immediately before, immediately after and 24 h after irradiation (10, 2.0 and 10 mg/kg, ip, respectively) to the irradiated rats. AP (P < 0.05) and TB (P < 0.05) irradiation applied in the morning caused a significant increase in thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels. Melatonin treatment in the morning (P < 0.05) or evening (P < 0.05) decreased TBARS levels after TB irradiation. After AP irradiation, melatonin treatment only in the morning caused a significant decrease in TBARS levels (P < 0.05). Although we have confirmed the development of inflammation after radiotherapy by histological findings, neither AP nor TB irradiation caused any marked changes in myeloperoxidase activity in the morning or evening. Our results indicate that oxidative damage is more prominent in rats receiving TB and AP irradiation in the morning and melatonin appears to have beneficial effects on oxidative damage irrespective of the time of administration. Increased neutrophil accumulation indicates that melatonin administration exerts a protective effect on AP irradiation-induced tissue oxidative injury, especially in the morning.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of limited food intake (LFI) (24, 48 and 120 h) and a single i.p. dose of vitamin C supplementation (500 mg/kg) on serum glucose and C-peptide levels, and pancreatic insulin and glucagon levels in guinea pigs. The highest serum glucose levels were found after vitamin C supplementation plus LFI for 48 h (LFI 48). Serum C-peptide levels were not significantly affected by food limitation (LFI 24, LFI 48, or LFI 120) as compared with controls, but when vitamin C was supplemented, the C-peptide levels were moderately enhanced. Immunohistochemical findings on pancreatic islets showed increased staining intensity for both insulin and glucagon when vitamin C was supplemented. In addition, the alpha and beta cells were stimulated, particularly by vitamin C supplementation plus LFI 120. Based on these findings, vitamin C supplementation may have a beneficial effect on the alpha and beta cells.

Abstract
Elevated serum bilirubin concentrations protect from atherosclerotic diseases; however,it is not clear whether higher serum bilirubin concentrations in physiological ranges do the same. To investigate the association of high and low serum bilirubin concentrations with left ventricular diastolic function and aortic elastic properties. We evaluated left ventricular diastolic function and aortic elastic properties of 42 healthy subjects with hypobilirubinemia (total bilirubin 0.40 ± 0.08 mg ⁄ dl; mean age 37.0 ± 3.9) and 40 healthy subjects with hyperbilirubinemia (total bilirubin 1.56 ± 0.49 mg ⁄ dl; mean age 36.2 ± 6.0) using transthoracic second harmonic Doppler echocardiography. Age, gender, body mass index and coronary risk factors were similar between the groups, except high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP).Left ventricular diastolic parameters were similar between the two groups. Aortic distensibility (AoD) was found to be significantly lower (11.1 ± 3.9 vs. 13.2 ± 4.9,p = 0.03) and aortic stiffness index (AoSI) (1.99 ± 0.30 vs. 1.85 ± 0.26,p = 0.02) and elastic modulus (AoEM) (2.06 ± 0.83 vs. 1.73 ± 0.68, p = 0.03;the low and high bilirubin groups, respectively) higher in the low bilirubin group.Serum total bilirubin concentration correlated with hsCRP levels, AoD, AoSI and AoEM. In conclusion, left ventricular systolic and diastolic functions were similar between hypo- and hyperbilirubinemic subjects, but aortic elastic properties were impaired in subjects with lower serum bilirubin concentrations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mucinous cystic neoplasms with ovarian stroma (OS) are rare cystic neoplasms in the liver and pancreas. The aim was to investigate whether OS in mucinous cystadenomas can originate from gonadal epithelium during early embryonic development. PATIENTS AND METHODS Pathology specimens of patients with mucinous cystadenomas were reviewed for OS. In human embryos, morphology of the peritoneal epithelium and the position of the gonads in relation to the embryonic liver, pancreas and spleen were examined. RESULTS From 1994 to 2004, 22 female patients presented with mucinous neoplasms of the liver or pancreas, including 19 cystadenomas and 3 cystadenocarcinomas. Mean age of the patients with cystadenoma in the liver was 44.8 years and with cystademona in the pancreas 41.2 years. OS was present in all mucinous cystadenomas, including the cystadenocarcinomas. CONCLUSION OS in mucinous cystadenomas of the liver and pancreas suggest a common origin in epithelial cells that cover the embryonic gonads in early fetal life.

Abstract
Implantation presents the remarkable synchronisation between the development of embryo and differentiation of endometrium. Cell-cell adhesion is an important phenomenon taking place during blastocyst implantation in uterine membrane. We think that the investigation of existence and the level of integrins in women can be a guide for treatment of infertility. Our purpose in this study was to show expression beta1 and beta4 integrins on gestational days 4, 6, 12 by immunohistochemical methods and to investigate whether beta4 integrin is a useful marker for receptivity. beta1 and beta4 integrin were exhibited on surface epithelium on gestational day 4. On the other hand, strong beta4 immunoreactivity was detected on surface epithelium and glandular cells on gestational day 12 but no beta1 reactivity was present in the surface epithelium and glandular cells on day 12. In conclusion, both beta1 and beta4 integrins may have a role in implantation process because positive immunoreactivity was seen on apical membrane of surface epithelium on day 4 when implantation occurred. The localization to apical pole of surface epithelium suggest a role for beta1, beta4 integrins in initial embryo and endometrium interaction. It does not seem that beta1 integrin has a role supporting pregnancy since expression of beta4 on surface epithelium and glandular epithelium disappeared on day 12. beta4 integrin expression increasing on day 12 of pregnancy leads us to think a possible functional role supporting pregnancy.

Abstract
Although uric acid (UA) is considered as an antioxidant, the relationship between serum UA levels and cardiovascular diseases is not clear yet. Higher brachial artery resting diameter (BD), impaired brachial artery flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), increased carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), decreased aortic distensibility (AoD), and increased aortic stiffness index (AoSI) and elastic modulus (AoEM) are predictors for development and/or progression of atherosclerosis. In this study, BD, FMD, carotid IMT, AoD, AoSI and AoEM were studied in healthy subjects with UA concentrations in physiological range. One hundred 24 healthy volunteers between 26 and 55 years of age were included in this study. Each subject had a serum UA levels in normal range. Carotid IMT, BD and brachial FMD were measured by means of high-resolution vascular ultrasound. AoD, AoSI, AoEM were examined by transthoracic echocardiography. Endothelium-dependent dilatation (EDD) was assessed by establishing reactive hyperemia and endothelium-independent dilatation (EID) was determined by using sublingual isosorbide dinitrate. Although carotid IMT and EDD were significantly correlated with UA concentrations (r = 0.346, p < 0.0001; r = -0.255, p < 0.05, respectively), EID measurements were not significantly correlated with serum UA concentrations (r = - 0.105, p > 0.05). In addition, AoSI and AoEM were significantly correlated with serum UA levels (r = 0.368, p < 0.0001; r = -0.366, p < 0.0001, respectively), and there was a significant inverse correlation between AoD and serum UA concentrations (r = -0.366, p < 0.0001). Furthermore, in multivariate analysis, we found that serum UA concentrations were correlated with increased carotid IMT, reduced FMD and increased aortic stiffness independent of other cardiovascular risk factor (beta = 256, p = 0.002; beta = -193, p = 0.03; beta = 0.295, p < 0.0001, respectively). In healthy subjects, increased serum UA concentrations, even in physiological range, are a risk factor for increased carotid IMT, reduced FMD and increased aortic stiffness independent of other cardiovascular risk factor, and other factors related to the metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the application of hematoxylin, safranin, light green and picric acid as counterstain in sperm immunohistochemistry. This is important to visualize the best staining procedure and to determine the advantage of picric acid as a counterstain in some situations. Picric acid used for counterstaining in the immunohistochemical procedure gives the best image of reaction on sperms when DAB was used as a chromogen.

Abstract
In this study, we aimed to detect the distribution of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGF-r) and transforming growth factor alpha in ovarian follicles at different stages. Indirect immunohistochemical methods and EGF-r polyclonal and TGF-alpha monoclonal antibodies were used; tissues were examined with light microscope. While dense collection of both growth factors were observed in primordial follicles, there was a strong reaction especially for EGF-r in follicles. Strong reactivity for EGF-r and moderate reactivity for TGF-alpha were observed in the nearby connective tissue. In examinations of primary follicles for EGF-r presence only, dye uptake was moderate in oocytes and dense in apical and basal cytoplasm of follicle cells. Reactivity was moderate in the nearby connective tissue. In the corpus luteum, there was weak reaction for both growth factors. But in stromal cells, reaction was strong. In degenerated follicle cells and in stroma of atretic follicles, reaction was positive for both growth factors; but EGF-r reactivity was more obvious. While strong staining was observed for both factors especially in granulosa cells surrounding the oocyte in Graafian follicle, moderate TGF-alpha reactivity was determined in oocyte cytoplasm. In conclusion, it is possible that EGF-r and TGF-alpha have ortocrine and paracrine effects on development and regression of human ovarian follicles.

Abstract
Central nervous system involvement in trichinosis is not rare. Brain lesions in trichinosis have been defined on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as multifocal small lesions located in the cerebral cortex and white matter. We present a case of trichinosis with multifocal lesions of the brain detected by MRI and diffusion weighted MRI. Evolutions of these lesions from acute through chronic stages on follow up studies are also presented. This is the first report describing sequential MRI findings and diffusion weighted imaging appearance of brain lesions in trichinosis. Sequential evaluation of conventional and diffusion MR data allowed us to conclude that multifocal lesions in the brain were related to multiple infarctions rather than true inflammatory infiltration of the brain parenchyma.

Abstract
Although the precise pathophysiology of thrombosis is unknown in primary anti-phospholipid syndrome (PAPS), it is assumed that autoantibodies developed against endothelial cells and platelets might be one of the primary mechanisms. However, whether interaction between autoantibodies and endothelium leads to an impaired vasodilator response has not been investigated yet. In this study, we aimed to investigate the endothelial functions in patients with PAPS. Thirty-one patients with PAPS (22 female, nine male, mean age: 34.6+/-8.9 years) and 27 age- and sex-matched, healthy controls were included in the study. Brachial artery responses to reactive hyperaemia (endothelium-dependent dilatation) [EDD] and sublingual nitroglycerine (endothelium-independent dilatation) [EID] were measured by using high-resolution vascular ultrasound both in patients with PAPS and in the controls. The results were expressed as percentage of change in baseline values. Regarding cardiovascular risk factors, there was no significant difference between the two groups. EDD in patients with PAPS was significantly lower than those of controls (6.9+/-4.9 vs. 14.8+/-4.1%; p<0.0001). EID measurements were not significantly different between the groups. In the PAPS group, EDD in patients with arterial involvement (17 patients) was significantly lower than those of patients with venous involvement (12 patients) (4.6+/-3.9 vs. 7.4+/-4.1%; p = 0.02). This study showed that endothelial functions determined by using brachial artery ultrasound were impaired in patients with PAPS, and this was more prominent in the subgroup of patients with arterial involvement compared to patients with venous involvement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Our aim was to investigate the effect of cyclosporine (CsA), which is commonly used in renal transplant patients and causes myocardial fibrosis and elevated arterial tension, on cardiac function. METHODS Sixty-six renal transplant patients (RTPs) and 25 healthy controls were included in the study. Renal transplantation patients were divided according to time of CsA exposure: group 1 (0 to 36 months); group 2 (36 to 72 months) and group 3 (> 72 months). Systolic peak velocity (Sm, mitral; St, tricuspid) and mitral early (e)/late (a) (Me/a) and tricuspid e/a (Te/a) waves of the right and the left ventricles were measured by pulse-wave (PW) Doppler used for tissue Doppler imaging of both ventricles as well as the ventricle free wall near to the lateral tricuspid and the posterior mitral leaflets. The measurements included conventional diastolic early (E) and late (A) waves and deceleration time (DT) of the E wave, isovolumetric relaxation time (IVRT) of both ventricles, as well as left ventricular systolic ejection fraction (EF). RESULTS There were no statistically significant differences between the groups with regard to demographic, clinical, and most biochemical characteristics. Left ventricular EF was normal in all groups; there were no statistically significant differences. IVRT and DT of left ventricle and right ventricle DT values were similar among RTPs. On the other hand, values were found to be increased in RTP groups compared with the control group. E/A ratio, Me/a Te/a of both ventricles were similar among RTPs. However, these values were found to be decreased in RTP groups compared with the control group. CONCLUSIONS Although left ventricular systolic functions were normal in all groups, there were statistically significant impairments of biventricular diastolic function parameters among renal transplant recipients compared with the control group.

Abstract
The distribution of EGF receptors (EGF-R) was examined in normal, hyaline membrane diseased and pneumonic newborn lung tissues by immunohistochemical methods under the light microscope. The PAP technique with polyclonal antibodies was performed to demonstrate the EGF receptor localisation in these tissues. Strong EGF-R reactivity was observed on bronchiolar epithelium and type I and type II alveolar cells in normal newborn lung tissues; whereas, poor reactivity was observed in alveolar macrophages. On the other hand, strong immunoreactivity was detected in type I alveolar cells and alveolar macrophages in hyaline membrane disease, but no reactivity was present in type II alveolar cells. The strongest immunoreactivity was observed in alveolar macrophages of newborn pneumonic lung tissues. In conclusion, the most meaningful form of reactivity was observed in normal newborn lung tissues of airway track and respiration area. This result is related with the maturation of the lungs after birth.

Abstract
A modified Sihler's stain technique was used to visualize the branching patterns of oculomotor and trochlear nerves. The levator palpebrae, superior rectus, inferior rectus, medial rectus, inferior oblique, superior oblique and tensor trochlea muscles were isolated from the eyes of normal rabbits and processed using modified Sihler's technique. The distributions and terminal ramifications of the oculomotor and trochlear nerves were observed. Two distinct divisions and terminal branches of the oculomotor nerve were shown in detail together with the trochlear nerve distribution. The application of Sihler's technique enables researchers to trace nerve branching within relatively transparent muscles, whereas the nerve fibers are counterstained and clearly visible. This technique could be useful for detailed studies of the motor control of extraocular muscles.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The authors performed an experimental and a prospective clinical study to evaluate the histological and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) alterations after irradiation of meniscus using holmium:YAG (Ho:YAG) laser VersaPulse Select 60 watts and InfraTome Delivery Systems 30 degrees Handpiece (spot size at fiber tip 0.4 mm; Coherent Medical, Palo Alto, CA). BACKGROUND DATA Recently, some authors reported a few cases with articular cartilage damage or paraarticular osteonecrosis following arthroscopic knee surgery in which the laser was used to assist in the treatment of meniscal pathology. METHODS Meniscus specimens in saline immersion were exposed to Ho:YAG laser irradiation. The laser wavelength was 2.1 microm and pulse duration was 250 microsec. Power settings were 1-1.5 joules per pulse and 10-15 Hz. Total laser energy used in these procedures was 2, 3.5, and 6 K joules. Eight patients with meniscal problems underwent arthroscopic partial meniscectomy using Ho:YAG laser. Total laser energy used for these surgeries was 1.5-2.5 K joules. MRI was performed preoperatively and at 6 months postoperatively. RESULTS At higher energy levels (more than 3 K joules), separation of the gap between the collagen fibers, and a three-dimensional dispersion in the striation were observed on electron microscopic evaluation of meniscus specimens. No patient had abnormal signals in MRI (a sign of articular cartilage damage or osteonecrosis) following arthroscopic laser surgery. CONCLUSION When higher energy level is required, conventional instruments should be preferred in the treatment of meniscal lesions. Laser should be reserved for the posteriorly located and smaller meniscal lesions.

Abstract
It is known that Adriamycin, which is widely used in the treatment of various neoplastic conditions, exerts toxic effects in several organs. In this study, we have established that vitamin E has some beneficial effects on the kidney by protecting it from some of the toxicity induced by Adriamycin. A study was carried out which comprised one control group and two experimental groups of guinea pigs. In the experiment Adriamycin was administered either alone (group II) or together with vitamin E (group III). The results of groups II and III were compared with controls (group I). The kidneys were subsequently removed and examined by routine electron microscopic techniques. We found that vitamin E administered together with Adriamycin could reverse some of the degenerative changes caused by Adriamycin.
