Abstract
OBJECTIVE There are limited studies on urogenital symptoms in women who experience menopause before the age of 40 years due to primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) or bilateral oophorectomy (surgical POI). This study aimed to compare the urogenital symptoms, including sexuality, of women with POI to those without the condition. METHODS This cross-sectional study conducted was in seven Latin American countries, in which postmenopausal women (with POI and non-POI) were surveyed with a general questionnaire, the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) and the six-item Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI-6). The association of premature menopause with more urogenital symptoms and lower sexual function was evaluated with logistic regression analysis. RESULTS Women with POI experience more urogenital symptoms (MRS urogenital score: 3.54 ± 3.16 vs. 3.15 ± 2.89, p < 0.05) and have lower sexual function (total FSFI-6 score: 13.71 ± 7.55 vs. 14.77 ± 7.57 p < 0.05) than women who experience menopause at a normal age range. There were no significant differences in symptoms when comparing women based on the type of POI (idiopathic or surgical). After adjusting for covariates, our logistic regression model determined that POI is associated with more urogenital symptoms (odds ratio [OR]: 1.38, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.06-1.80) and lower sexual function (OR: 1.67, 95% CI 1.25-2.25). CONCLUSION POI, whether idiopathic or secondary to bilateral oophorectomy, is associated with symptoms that affect vaginal and sexual health.

Abstract
Introduction Incidental durotomy (ID) is an intraoperative event associated to prolonged bed rest and hospital stay, antibiotic use, higher patient dissatisfaction, and leg pain among other complications of its postoperative course. Several repair techniques and postsurgical care have been proposed for its management. This study was designed to develop an agreed protocol in cases of ID among Orthopaedic Surgeons (OS) and Neurosurgeons (NS) integrated into a Spinal Surgery Unit. Research question Incidental durotomies management protocol. Materials and methods From 997 eligible cases operated in Hospital del Mar (Barcelona, Spain) from April 2018 to March 2022, demographic, clinical, surgical and postoperative data was collected for statistical analysis from the morbidity and mortality database, with 79 identified IDs. Redo procedures were significantly associated to OS, and cervical and anterior/lateral approaches to NS, both groups were not comparable. Results ID occurred in 7.9% of cases, more frequently after the lockdown (p=0.03), in females (p=0.04), during posterior approaches (p=0.003), and less frequently in the cervical spine (p=0.009). IDs were linked to postoperative infections (p< 0.001) and nerve root damage (p< 0.001). Patients without ID evolved more satisfactorily during the postoperative period (p=0.002), and those with CSF leak (20/79) spent on bed rest more than twice the time as those without (p<0.001). Multivariable logistic regression showed strong association between posterior approaches and ID, between complicated postoperative courses and ID. Discussion and conclusions ID is linked to an adverse postoperative recovery, and it should be primarily repaired under microscope, with early mobilization of patients after surgery.

Abstract
Children's developing brains are susceptible to pesticides. Less is known about the effect of exposure to chlorpyrifos and pyrethroids on executive functions (EF). We measured urinary 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCPy), a metabolite of chlorpyrifos, and urinary 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA), a general, nonspecific metabolite of pyrethroids in first-grade children from Montevideo, Uruguay (n = 241, age 80.6 ± 6.4 months, 58.1% boys). EFs were assessed with the Intra-dimensional/Extra-dimensional shift (IED), Spatial Span (SSP), and Stockings of Cambridge (SOC) tests from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated (CANTAB) Battery. General intellectual ability (GIA) was assessed using the Woodcock-Muñoz Cognitive battery. Median (range) urinary TCPy and 3-PBA levels were 16.7 (1.9, 356.9) ng/mg of creatinine and 3.3 (0.3, 110.6) ng/mg of creatinine, respectively. In multivariable generalized linear models, urinary TCPy was inversely associated with postdimensional errors on the IED task β [95% CI]: -0.11 [-0.17, -0.06]. Urinary 3-PBA was inversely associated with the total number of trials -0.07 [-0.10, -0.04], and the total number of errors -0.12 [-0.18, -0.07] on the IED task. When TCPy and 3-PBA were modeled together, the associations did not differ from single-metabolite models. We found no evidence of effect modification by blood lead level (BLL). Pesticide exposure may affect EF performance in urban children.

Abstract
This work shows that biosphere reserves, national parks and other protected natural areas require in situ tools to monitor and detect local and remote air pollution sources which are a threat to flora, fauna water and soil. Industries in surrounding areas, traffic and long-range transport of air pollution, can change with time and meteorology and so each national park should also have a historical database of the air quality in the site. This study reports surface measurements of ozone, NO, NO2, CO, SO2 and PM2.5 acquired from March 2020 to July 2021 in "Las Tablas de Daimiel", a wetland Mediterranean National Park bordered by different cities and new industries in the field of the revalorization of agricultural wastes. Simultaneous data from a background station in a rural area isolated from air pollution are considered as reference. Twelve campaigns of one week duration were also performed to sample air in sorbent tubes to analyse volatile organic compounds from anthropogenic sources. Data are discussed considering meteorology, especially wind speed and direction together with the assessment of back-trajectories of air masses from distant sources. The results show that the effects of pollution from local and faraway sources on air quality in the park were weak. Thus, except for the high levels of ozone, with a mean value of 71 μg.m-3, measured mass loadings for pollutants were low and not in exceedance of the air quality standards. Saharan dust events were frequent and contributed to PM2.5 levels in the site. NOx and SO2 average concentrations (3.2 and 0.4 μg.m-3, respectively) were below the recommended critical levels for vegetation and all the quantified VOCs were found in average concentration levels below 0.5 μg.m-3.

Abstract
In this study, we report on the stabilization of a continuous-wave Ti:Sa laser to an optical frequency comb. The laser is emitting at 866 nm to address one of the transitions required for Doppler cooling of a single 40Ca+ ion in a linear Paul trap (2D3/2 ↔P1/22). The stabilized Ti:Sa laser is utilized to calibrate an ultra-accurate wavelength meter. We certify this self-reference laser source by comparing the results from monitoring the laser-cooled 40Ca+ ion in the linear Paul trap, with those obtained when a HeNe laser is used for calibration. The use of this self-reference is compatible with the simultaneous use of the comb for precision spectroscopy in the same ion-trap experiment.

Abstract
Introducción En el hospital de La Princesa comienza el “Código Sepsis” (CSP) en el año 2015, como un grupo multidisciplinar que dota al personal sanitario de herramientas clínicas, analíticas y organizativas, con el objetivo de la detección y el tratamiento precoz del paciente con sepsis. El objetivo de este estudio es evaluar el impacto de la implantación de CSP en la mortalidad y determinar las variables asociadas con un aumento de la misma. Material y métodos Se realizó un estudio analítico retrospectivo de los pacientes con activación de la alerta CSP de 2015 a 2018. Se recogieron variables clínico-epidemiológicas, parámetros analíticos y factores de gravedad como el ingreso en Unidades de Cuidados Críticos (UCC) y la necesidad de aminas. La significación estadística se estableció en una p < 0,05. Resultados Se incluyeron 1.121 pacientes. La estancia media fue de 16 días y un 32% requirieron ingreso en UCC. La mortalidad mostró una tendencia lineal descendente estadísticamente significativa del 24% en 2015 hasta el 15% en 2018. Las variables predictivas de mortalidad con asociación estadísticamente significativa fueron el lactato > 2 mmol/L, la creatinina > 1,6 mg/dL y la necesidad de aminas. Conclusiones La implementación de Código Sepsis disminuye la mortalidad de los pacientes con sepsis y shock séptico. La presencia de una cifra de lactato > 2 mmol/L, los niveles de creatinina > 1,6 mg/dL y/o la necesidad de administrar aminas en las primeras 24 horas, se asocian con un aumento de la mortalidad en el paciente con sepsis.

Abstract
The SARS-CoV-2 health crisis has temporarily forced the lockdown of entire countries. This work reports the short-term effects on air quality of such unprecedented paralysis of industry and transport in different continental cities in Spain, one of the countries most affected by the virus and with the hardest confinement measures. The study takes into account sites with different sizes and diverse emission sources, such as traffic, residential or industrial emissions. This work reports new field measurement data for the studied pandemic period and assesses the air quality parameters within the historic trend of each pollutant and site. Thus, 2013-2020 data series from ground-air quality monitoring networks have been analysed to find out statistically significant changes in atmospheric pollutants during March-June 2020 due to this sudden paralysis of activity. The results show substantial concentration drops of primary pollutants, including NOx, CO, BTX, NMHC and NH3. Particulate matter changes were smaller due to the existence of other natural sources. During the lockdown the ozone patterns were different for each studied location, depending on the VOCs-NOx ratios, with concentration changes close to those expected from the historical series in each site and not statistically attributable to the health crisis effects. Finally, the gradual de-escalation and progressive increase of traffic density within cities reflects a slow recovery of primary pollutants. The results and conclusions for these cities, with different sizes and population, and specific emission sources, may serve as a behavioural model for other continental sites and help understand future crises.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Very few studies have explored the utility of subjective cognitive complaints (SCCs) in primary care settings. OBJECTIVE We aim to investigate associations between SCCs (item-level), objective cognitive function (across domains and global), and mood in a diverse primary care population, including subjects with mild cognitive impairment. METHODS We studied 199 (75.9%females; 57.8%Hispanics; 42.2%African Americans) older adults (mean age 72.5 years) with memory concerns at a primary care clinic. A five-item SCC questionnaire, and objective cognitive assessments, including the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and the Geriatric Depression Scale, were administered. RESULTS Logistic regression analyses showed associations between SCC score and depressive symptoms. A memory-specific ("memory worsening") SCC predicted scores on the MoCA (p = 0.005) in Hispanics. CONCLUSION SCCs are strongly linked to depressive symptoms in African Americans and Hispanics in a primary care setting; a specific type of SCC is related to global cognitive function in Hispanics.

Abstract
We report on cyclotron frequency measurements on trapped 206,207Pb+ ions by means of the non-destructive Fourier-transform ion-cyclotron-resonance technique at room temperature. In a proof-of-principle experiment using a quartz crystal instead of a coil as a resonator, we have alternately carried out cyclotron frequency measurements for 206Pb+ and 207Pb+ with the sideband coupling method to obtain 21 cyclotron-frequency ratios with a statistical uncertainty of 6 × 10-7. The mean frequency ratio R¯ deviates by about 2σ from the value deduced from the masses reported in the latest Atomic Mass Evaluation. We anticipate that this shift is due to the ion-ion interaction between the simultaneously trapped ions (≈100) and will decrease to a negligible level once we reach single-ion sensitivity. The compactness of such a crystal makes this approach promising for direct Penning-trap mass measurements on heavy and superheavy elements.

Abstract
SETTING Five Colombian cities: Villavicencio, Pereira, Cucuta, Bucaramanga and Bosa. OBJECTIVE To describe the knowledge, attitudes and practices related to tuberculosis (TB) in household contacts (HHCs) of TB patients. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted. The estimated sample size required was 855. The World Health Organization guide 'Advocacy, communication and social mobilization for TB control: a guide to developing knowledge, attitude and practice surveys' was translated into Spanish and adapted to the dialect of each city. HHCs were invited to participate in the study and included if they agreed. RESULTS We interviewed 878 HHCs. Most of them knew that TB was transmitted by airborne droplets; however, 52.2% also said that TB could be transferred from one person to another by sharing plates or clothes or shaking hands. Fifty-five per cent of HHCs acquired TB-related information from health care workers, and 44% from family members and friends. Fear was the main reaction reported by HHCs when they were informed of a TB diagnosis (60%). Eighty-five per cent of HHCs answered that the community rejects or avoids TB cases. CONCLUSION There are significant gaps in the knowledge about TB and the stigmatisation associated with it. Educational strategies should be designed together with the community to demystify many misconceptions about TB.

STUDY QUESTION
Is there significant variability in progesterone levels during the final day of oocyte maturation in women undergoing ovarian stimulation?
SUMMARY ANSWER
Progesterone levels drop from the basal level up to 44% during the final day of oocyte maturation in women undergoing ovarian stimulation.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY
It has been suggested that elevated progesterone levels on the final day of ovarian stimulation may be related to poorer outcomes in in vitro fertilization fresh cycles due to a negative impact on the endometrium. However, despite conflicting results regarding the actual effect of progesterone on pregnancy rates and the lack of a well-established cut off, currently many IVF patients have their embryo transfer deferred when progesterone values surpass a threshold of 1.5 ng/ml on the day of ovulation triggering.
STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION
This was a prospective cohort study conducted in 22 oocyte donors of a university-affiliated fertility centre between November 2017 and January 2018. We calculated the sample size to detect a difference of 15% between the first and last progesterone measurements with a 5% false-positive rate in a two-sided test with 80% statistical power and a 95% confidence interval (CI).
PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS
Progesterone circulating levels were evaluated at four different times during the final day of oocyte maturation (08:00, 12:00, 16:00 and 20:00) before ovulation triggering in healthy oocyte donors. A flexible antagonist protocol was used, and ovarian stimulation was achieved with recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in all cases. The pairwise percentage differences in progesterone levels for each patient were calculated. Univariate linear regression analysis was adopted in order to evaluate variables associated with progesterone levels on the first measurement. The intra-day variability of progesterone was analysed using mixed models.
MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE
Mean serum progesterone values at 08:00, 12:00, 16:00 and 20:00 were 1.75 ng/ml, 1.40 ng/ml, 1.06 ng/ml and 0.97 ng/ml. The progesterone difference between 08:00 and 20:00 was 0.77 (95% CI, 0.56–0.99), which is equivalent to a 44% decline in the mean progesterone values between the first (08:00) and the last determination (20:00; P < 0.001). Among those patients with basal (08:00) progesterone levels >1.5 ng/ml (n = 10), 70% (n = 7) showed levels reduced to <1.5 ng/ml on the last determination of the day (20:00). A mixed model analysis revealed that the progesterone reduction during the day was significantly associated with time and total recombinant FSH dose administered.
LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION
Only young healthy oocyte donors stimulated with an antagonist protocol using recombinant FSH were included. Extrapolation to the general IVF population, with different stimulation protocols and gonadotropins, needs to be confirmed.
WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS
This study suggests that a single progesterone determination on the final day of oocyte maturation is not reliable enough to make clinical decisions due to the enormous variation in progesterone during the day. Further studies are needed to better define the impact of the follicular progesterone rise on the endometrium of IVF cycles.

Abstract
Single-ion sensitivity is obtained in precision Penning-trap experiments devoted to light (anti)particles or ions with low mass-to-charge ratios, by adding an inductance coil to an amplifier connected to the trap, both operated at 4 K. However, single-ion sensitivity has not been reached on heavy singly or doubly charged ions. In this publication, we present a new system to reach this point, based on the use of a quartz crystal as an inductance, together with a newly developed broad-band (BB) amplifier. We detect the reduced-cyclotron frequency of 40Ca+ ions stored in a 7-tesla open-ring Penning trap. By comparing the detected electric signal obtained with the BB amplifier and the fluorescence signal obtained by collecting the photons emitted by a trapped ion cloud, we show a detection limit below 110 ions. Adding the crystal, the electrical signal increases by a factor of about 30 at room temperature, which combined with the measured equivalent resistance and voltage noise, proves the feasibility of the system to reach single-ion sensitivity at 4 K.

Abstract
Encarsia formosa (Gahan) (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) has been used to control for the biological control of Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) in greenhouse tomato crops. One aspect that influences the success of this method is the continuous availability of large numbers of E. formosa that enable the grower to release them at the proper time and in the quantity required. Rearing facilities of this parasitoid require reliable and low time-consuming methods for scouting populations of insects to forecast production. In this work, we develop a time-effective method for estimating insect populations in a mass rearing system with T. vaporariorum, using common bean plants as hosts. The population density of T. vaporariorum in highly infested leaves was determined to be 27.5 nymphs/cm2 using a linear regression model. Using an effort curve and binomial distribution, we determined that 14 and 54 leaves are the minimum number of sampling units required to estimate the T. vaporariorum nymphs and E. formosa pupae populations, respectively. A wasp ratio was determined by dividing the number of E. formosa produced by the total number used in the process. This index was higher when less than 7000 E. formosa were released per production batch in 1 week. When high populations of E. formosa are released in a batch, the production efficiency decreases, producing fewer new adults per adult used in the batch.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the air quality of an indoor swimming pool, analyzing diurnal and seasonal variations in microbiological counts and chemical parameters. The results indicated that yeast and bacteria counts, as well as carbon dioxide (CO2 ), nitrogen oxides (NOx ) and O3 concentrations, showed significant diurnal difference. On the other hand, temperature, relative humidity (R.H.), yeast counts and concentrations of CO2 , particles, O3 , toluene, and benzene showed seasonal differences. In addition, the relationship between indoor and outdoor air and the degree of correlation between the different parameters have been calculated, suggesting that CO2 , fine particles and NOx would have indoor origin due to the human activity and secondary reactions favored by the chemical and environmental conditions of the swimming pool; while O3 , benzene and toluene, would come from outside, mainly. The overall results indicated that indoor air quality (IAQ) in the swimming pool building was deficient by the high levels of CO2 and microorganisms, low temperatures, and high R.H., because frequently the limits established by the legislation were exceeded. This fact could be due to the poor ventilation and the inadequate operation of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Mucinous adenocarcinoma on perianal fistula is a rare entity; it could be underdiagnosed because it behaves often as a regular perianal fistula. MATERIALS AND METHODS We have recently treated four cases in our unit. We present them and review the literature, emphasizing on clinical characteristic and therapeutic options. The four patients were male with a mean age of 64. Three of them were classified as locally advances cases and therefore treated with neoadjuvant therapy. RESULTS All of them underwent laparoscopic abdominoperineal escisión. Surgical specimens are described and clinical characteristic specified. Review of the literature shows that this disease has a very high potential risk of local recurrence and we must be aggressive with the resection. Sometimes plastic surgery is needed to reconstruct the perianal wound. CONCLUSIONS Mucinous adenocarcinoma associated with anal fistula is a rare disease. Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by an adequate abdominoperineal excision may result in favourable outcomes.

Abstract
Otaria flavescens (SASL) and Arctocephalus australis (SAFS) are endemic of South America. The aims were to assess Cd concentrations in red blood cells (RBC) and plasma from free living females of both species; and to establish metallothioneins (MT) levels in blood fractions and the possible relationship between MTs and Cd. Blood of fifteen SASL and eight SAFS females from Isla de Lobos were analyzed (years 2010-2011). All animals showed Cd levels above the detection limit. Cd concentrations on SAFS were higher than those of SASL, however, no significant differences were observed on metal concentrations between cell fractions by species. Metal levels were associated with a natural presence and ecological-trophic habits of the prey items. On SASL the MT concentrations between fractions were similar; whereas, SAFS plasma concentrations were higher than RBC. The results reported constitute the first information on Cd and MT blood levels in these species.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Amoxicillin (AX) is the ß-lactam most often involved in IgE-mediated reactions. Diagnosis is based mainly on skin testing, although sensitivity is not optimal. We produced a new AX derivative, amoxicilloyl-poly-L-lysine (APL), and analyzed its recognition of IgE using the passive histamine release test (pHRT). METHODS The study population comprised patients (n=19) with confirmed AX allergy and specific IgE to AX and controls (n=10) with good tolerance to AX. pHRT was performed using "IgE-stripped" blood from a single donor that was sensitized in vitro by patient sera and incubated with AX or APL. Histamine release was determined and expressed as nanograms of histamine released per milliliter of blood. RESULTS The clinical symptoms were anaphylaxis (n=9), urticaria (n=7), erythema (n=2), and nondefined immediate reactions (n=1). The median (IQR) time interval between reaction and study was 90 (60-240) days and between drug intake and development of symptoms 24 (10-60) minutes. The median sIgE level was 3.37 (0.95-5.89) kUA/L. The sensitivity of pHRT to APL was 79% and the specificity 100%, which were higher than data obtained with pHRT to AX (63% sensitivity and 90% specificity). There was a positive correlation between maximal histamine release levels obtained with AX and APL (r=0.63). CONCLUSIONS In patients with immediate hypersensitivity reactions to AX, APL showed higher sensitivity and specificity than the culprit drug, AX, when tested in vitro by pHRT. This indicates that APL can improve the in vitro diagnostic accuracy of allergic reactions to AX. Further assessment of skin testing is necessary.

Abstract
The supply of predatory mites as natural enemies is a key component to guarantee the success of biological pest control programs as alternatives to chemical control in commercial crops. To meet the demand for a supply of biologicals, the mass rearing of natural enemies is an option, and the first step must be to develop a standardized system that maximizes the production of prey. One choice for this first step is to use simulation models that can evaluate scenarios that are difficult or complex to address experimentally. In this work, a model was developed to evaluate the current management conditions for the mass rearing of the pest mite Tetranychus urticae Koch. Our aim was to identify alternative scenarios to maximize mite production through mass rearing that could be evaluated in real systems. We assumed that populations of T. urticae were regulated by the conditions of supply-demand theory and modeled the age structure, temperature effects, and individual phenology of T. urticae. The supply-demand theory of resources was used to regulate populations, which involved structured ages and temperature effects for the different stages in the development of individuals. We used the functional response and the paradigm of metabolic pool models to describe resource acquisition and allocation. We demonstrated that 7- to 14-day-old plants infested with 45 or 62 T. urticae/plant could reach 25,000 individuals/plant, being 50% of these preys at the preferred stages by the predator Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot. Our theoretical model requires validation in experimental/real systems of mass rearing to better verify the validity of all of the parameters and predictions before commercial implementation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Public bicycle-sharing initiatives can act as health enhancement strategies among urban populations. The aim of the study was to determine which attitudes and perceptions of behavioural control toward cycling and a bicycle-sharing system distinguish commuters with a different adherence to bicycle commuting. METHODS The recruitment process was conducted in 40 random points in Barcelona from 2011 to 2012. Subjects completed a telephone-based questionnaire including 27 attitude and perception statements. Based on their most common one-way commute trip and willingness to commute by bicycle, subjects were classified into Private Bicycle (PB), public bicycle or Bicing Bicycle (BB), Willing Non-bicycle (WN) and Non-willing Non-bicycle (NN) commuters. After reducing the survey statements through principal component analysis, a multinomial logistic regression model was obtained to evaluate associations between attitudinal and commuter sub-groups. RESULTS We included 814 adults in the analysis [51.6% female, mean (SD): age 36.6 (10.3) years]. BB commuters were 2.0 times [95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.1-3.7] less likely to perceive bicycle as a quick, flexible and enjoyable mode compared to PB. BB, WN and NN were 2.5 (95% CI = 1.46-4.24), 2.6 (95% CI = 1.53-4.41) and 2.3 times (95% CI = 1.30-4.10) more likely to perceive benefits of using public bicycles (bicycle maintenance and parking avoidance, low cost and no worries about theft and vandalism) than did PB. CONCLUSION Willing non-bicycle and public-bicycle commuters had more favourable perception toward public-shared bicycles compared to private cyclists. Hence, public bicycles may be the impetus for those willing to start bicycle commuting, thereby increasing physical activity levels.

Abstract
Ultrafine particles, PM2.5 and PM10 mass concentration, NO(x), Ozone, SO2, back-trajectories of air masses and meteorological parameters were studied in a small city over the period February, 2013 to June, 2014. The profiles of PM2.5 and PM10 particles are provided, showing averaged values of 16.6 and 21.6 μg m(-3), respectively. The average number concentration of particles in the range of diameters 5.6-560 nm was 1.2 × 10(4)#/ cm(3) with contributions of 42, 51 and 7% from the nucleation, Aitken, and accumulation modes, respectively. The average number concentration of ultrafine particles was 1.1 × 10(4)#/ cm(3). The results obtained are evidence for some differences in the pollution of ambient air by particles in the studied town in comparison to bigger cities. Nucleation events due to emissions from the city were not observed, and traffic emissions amount to a small contribution to PM2.5 and PM10 particles which are mainly due to crustal origin from the arid surroundings and long-range transport from the Sahara Desert.

Abstract
This paper reports the synthesis of silver nanoparticles coated with porous silica (Ag@Silica NPs) using an assisted laser ablation method. This method is a chemical synthesis where one of the reagents (the reducer agent) is introduced in nanometer form by laser ablation of a solid target submerged in an aqueous solution. In a first step, a silicon wafer immersed in water solution was laser ablated for several minutes. Subsequently, an AgNO3 aliquot was added to the aqueous solution. The redox reaction between the silver ions and ablation products leads to a colloidal suspension of core-shell Ag@Silica NPs. The influence of the laser pulse energy, laser wavelength, ablation time, and Ag(+) concentration on the size and optical properties of the Ag@Silica NPs was investigated. Furthermore, the colloidal suspensions were studied by UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy, X-Ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM).

Abstract
A special ion trap was initially built up to perform β-ν correlation experiments with radioactive ions. The trap geometry is also well suited to perform experiments with laser-cooled ions, serving for the development of a new type of Penning trap, in the framework of the project TRAPSENSOR at the University of Granada. The goal of this project is to use a single (40)Ca(+) ion as detector for single-ion mass spectrometry. Within this project and without any modification to the initial electrode configuration, it was possible to perform Doppler cooling on (40)Ca(+) ions, starting from large clouds and reaching single ion sensitivity. This new feature of the trap might be important also for other experiments with ions produced at radioactive ion beam facilities. In this publication, the trap and the laser system will be described, together with their performance with respect to laser cooling applied to large ion clouds down to a single ion.

Abstract
One of the main pests of commercial rose crops in Colombia is the phytophagous mite Tetranychus urticae Koch. To manage this pest, synthetic chemicals have traditionally been used, some of which are well known to be potentially toxic to the environment and humans. Therefore, alternative strategies for pest management in greenhouse crops have been developed in recent years, including biological control with natural enemies such as parasitoids, predators and entomopathogenic microorganisms as well as chemical control using plant extracts. Such extracts have shown toxicity to insects, which has positioned them as a common alternative in programs of integrated pest management. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of an unfractionated ethanolic extract of Cnidoscolus aconitifolius leaves on adult females of T. urticae under laboratory conditions. The extract was chemically characterized by recording its metabolic profile via liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, along with tentative metabolite identification. The immersion technique and direct application to rose leaves were used to evaluate the effects of seven doses (10–2,000 µg/mL) of the ethanol extract of C. aconitifolius leaves on T. urticae females under laboratory conditions. The mortality and oviposition of individuals were recorded at 24, 48 and 72 h. It was found that the C. aconitifolius leaf extract reduced fertility and increased mortality in a dose-dependent manner. The main metabolites identified included flavonoid- and sesquiterpene-type compounds, in addition to chromone- and xanthone-type compounds as minor constituents with potential acaricidal effects.

Abstract
Kidney transplantation has become the best treatment for children with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In recent times, knowledge concerning the effect of CKD and kidney transplantation over the normal growth rate has increased; now it is known that 40% of children with CKD do not reach the expected height for age. Growth retardation has been associated with the type of nephropathy, metabolic and endocrine disorders that are secondary to kidney disease, immunosuppressive therapy with glucocorticoids, and suboptimal function of renal allograft. Nowadays, we know better the role of the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor 1 axis in growth retardation we can see it in children with CKD or recipients of renal allograft. Several studies have shown that administration of recombinant growth hormone (rhGH) has a positive effect on the longitudinal growth of children and teenagers who have received a kidney transplant. On the other hand, there have been reported side effects associated with using rhGH; however, these are not statistically significant. In this article, we show a small review about growth in children with CKD and/or recipients of renal allografts the growth pattern of three children who were known by the Transplant Group of National University of Colombia, and the results obtained with the use of rhGH in one of these cases. We want to show the possibility of achieving a secure use of rhGH in children with CKD and its use as a therapeutic option for treating the growth retardation in children with kidney transplantation, and set out the need of typifying the growth pattern of Colombian children with CKD and/or who are recipients of renal allografts through multicenter studies to propose and analyze the inclusion of rhGH in the therapeutic scheme of Colombian children with these two medical conditions. rhGH could be a useful tool for treating children with CKD or kidney transplantation who have not reached the expected longitudinal growth for age. However, it is necessary to know the growth pattern standards for Colombian children with CKD or kidney transplant in Bogotá-Colombia to include the rhGH in clinical protocols for treatment of these patients.

Abstract
Malnutrition in elderly people is one of the major syndromes associated to greater prevalence of chronic diseases and increased morbidity, hospital staying, and mortality. On the other hand, malnutrition in the fourth world is associated to another important risk factor, which is the poor economic status. The aim of this study was to elaborate a balanced menu for the elderly adjusting its price to the mean expense that this population dedicates to its feeding needs. Taking into account the Household expense for 2010 of the National Institute of Statistics, we established that the average price for each menu ought to be less than 5.57 € per day. Two type menus were elaborated, both adapted to this population and to the Mediterranean diet. The economic assessment was 5.02 € and 5.06 €, respectively. Given the prevalence of malnutrition in this population, it is essential being able to appropriately plan their feeding needs, at both the nutritional and economic levels.

Abstract
Starches can be used to form edible or biodegradable films, and recently modified starches have been used to form self-supporting films by casting from aqueous solution. In this work, we aimed to propose a novel starch-based composite biomaterial matrix for use in biomedical applications, especially tissue engineering. The goal of the study was to evaluate the cytocompatibility of composite hydrogels of methylated starch and chitosan, using glutaraldehyde as the cross-linker. Commercial cassava starch with high purity (96.69%) was methylated with dimethyl sulfate in order to obtain a rigid material that could possibly render stronger mechanical properties to chitosan hydrogels. Therefore, methylated starch was mixed with a solution of chitosan and the cross-linking was induced by the addition of glutaraldehyde, allowing the formation of hydrogel films which were visualized under scanning electron microscopy. The method of fabrication was optimized based on the capacity of the cells to attach to the material and proliferate. After thorough washes with ethanol and saline solution, human fibroblasts were seeded on top of the gels and allowed to grow for 3 to 5 days. Cell viability was measured using an (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) MMT assay, and cell morphology was visualized by light microscopy. It was found that cells were viable at every time point, with their metabolic activity comparable to the controls (tissue culture plastic and chitosan alone), as well as clear cell–matrix interactions. Moreover, an increase in the metabolic activity over time indicated the capacity of the material to support cell proliferation. The proposed methylated starch–chitosan system is an excellent matrix that allows cell adhesion and could thereby be further assessed as a scaffold for tissue engineering.

Abstract
Caveolins are a family of membrane proteins required for the formation of small plasma membrane invaginations called caveolae that are implicated in cellular trafficking processes. In addition to this structural role, these scaffolding proteins modulate numerous intracellular signaling pathways; often via direct interaction with specific binding partners. Caveolin-1 is particularly well-studied in this respect and has been attributed a large variety of functions. Thus, Caveolin-1 also represents the best-characterized isoform of this family with respect to its participation in cancer. Rather strikingly, available evidence indicates that Caveolin-1 belongs to a select group of proteins that function, depending on the cellular settings, both as tumor suppressor and promoter of cellular traits commonly associated with enhanced malignant behavior, such as metastasis and multi-drug resistance. The mechanisms underlying such ambiguity in Caveolin-1 function constitute an area of great interest. Here, we will focus on discussing how Caveolin-1 modulates cell death and survival pathways and how this may contribute to a better understanding of the ambiguous role this protein plays in cancer.

Abstract
Quantum-mechanical shell effects are expected to strongly enhance nuclear binding on an "island of stability" of superheavy elements. The predicted center at proton number Z = 114, 120, or 126 and neutron number N = 184 has been substantiated by the recent synthesis of new elements up to Z = 118. However, the location of the center and the extension of the island of stability remain vague. High-precision mass spectrometry allows the direct measurement of nuclear binding energies and thus the determination of the strength of shell effects. Here, we present such measurements for nobelium and lawrencium isotopes, which also pin down the deformed shell gap at N = 152.
