Abstract
The large input of mulch film and organic fertilizer have led to increasingly serious microplastic pollution in farmland soil of China. In this study, the microplastic pollution of peanut farmland in Dezhou City, Shandong Province was investigated. The effects of different mulching years (0, 3, 5, and 8 years) and organic fertilizer application on the abundance, particle size, color, and shape of microplastics in farmland soil were analyzed. The results showed that the average abundances of microplastics in peanut soil were 65.33, 316.00, 1 098.67, and 1 346.34 n·kg-1, respectively, after 0, 3, 5, and 8 years of film mulching. The abundance of microplastics decreased with the increase in soil depth. The abundance of microplastics in 0-10, 10-20, and 20-30 cm topsoil was 1 076.00, 603.5, and 440.25 n·kg-1, respectively, and the abundance of microplastics increased significantly with increasing years of film mulching and organic fertilizer application (P<0.05). The particle size of microplastics in the sample plot <1 mm accounted for 77.30% of the total content, and with the increase in film mulching age, the proportion of microplastics with small particle size (<1 mm) increased significantly (P < 0.05). With the increase in soil depth, the proportion of microplastics with small particle size also gradually increased, whereas the application of organic fertilizer had no significant effect on the particle size of microplastics. The color of microplastics in the plot was mainly transparent (49.77%), followed by black (16.35%) and white (16.27%). The planting age and organic fertilizer application had no significant effect on the color of microplastics in the soil (P > 0.05), but the mulching age significantly increased the proportion of transparent microplastics. The abundance proportion of the five types of microplastics were 49.77%, 25.41%, 19.15%, 3.26%, and 2.41%, respectively. These field soil microplastics were mainly composed of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) polymers, accounting for 21.37%, 18.57%, and 19.77% of the total, respectively. Therefore, microplastics were widely present in the soil of the peanut field cultivated layer in Dezhou, Shandong, and the applications of mulch film and organic fertilizer were the main source. This study provides an important basis for the prevention and control of soil microplastic pollution in peanut fields.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the best radiomic features based prediction model for identifying the histopathological subtypes of invasive adenocarcinoma or noninvasive pulmonary nodules appearing as subsolid nodules. Methods: A total of 352 patients (108 males and 244 females, median age was [M(Q1,Q3)]57 (50,65), underwent high-resolution chest CT and appearing as subsolid nodules and further treated by surgical resection whose subsequently pathological results were classified as atypical adenomatous hyperplasia (AAH), carcinoma in situ (AIS), microinvasive carcinoma (MIA), invasive adenocarcinoma (IA), from January 2015 to September 2019, in Radiology Department of Zhongda Hospital Affiliated to Southeast University and Jinling Hospital, Medical School of Nanjing University were retrospectively collected. They were divided into non-invasive group (n=233) and invasive group (n=119) according to pathological findings. According to the ratio of training set: internal test set: external test set, which is about 3∶1∶1,the patients in Zhongda Hospital Affiliated to Southeast University were randomly divided into training set (n=215, non-IA∶IA 155∶60) and internal test set(n=69, non-IA∶IA 52∶17), meanwhile a certain number of patients in Jinling Hospital, Medical School of Nanjing University(n=68, non-IA∶IA 26∶42)were randomly selected as an independent external test set. Particular quantitative parameters of the nodules, radiomic features, morphological characteristics, clinical data, and serum tumor markers were recorded. Radiomic label was constructed using LASSO regression method. The morphological model, CT model and comprehensive model were constructed by binary logistic regression and were verified in test sets, respectively. Results: Shape_MinorAxis(Gradient),Glszm_ZoneEntropy(LBP) were selected as the two most significant features based on training set. Radiomic tag=1.065 75×Shape_MinorAxis(Gradient)+0.030 58×Glszm_ZoneEntropy(LBP). Comparing the prediction performance of all models in each data cohort, the CT model (Ln(P/1-P)=-2.417 11+1.031 60×Radimic tag+1.203 06×Diameter+1.614 21×(Pleural indentation sign = Y) constructed by radiomic label, pleural depression, and quantitative parameters (diameter, average density) was much better than other models and was chosen as the optimal model, with an AUC of CT models in training cohort and test cohort was 0.954 (95%CI: 0.927-0.981), 0.865 (95%CI:0.764-0.966), better than morphological model 0.857 (95%CI:0.796-0.918), 0.818(95%CI: 0.686-0.949) and comprehensive model 0.951(95%CI: 0.921-0.981), 0.856(95%CI: 0.730-0.982), respectively. Conclusion: The integrative CT model has a better prediction efficiency for identifying invasive or noninvasive nodules appearing as subsolid nodules.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the regulatory role and mechanism of tribbles pseudokinase 3 (TRB3) on hepatocarcinoma (HCC) cells proliferation, apoptosis and migration. Methods: Immunohistochemistry and Western blot were used to detect TRB3 expression in cancerous and adjacent cancerous liver tissues of HCC patients. TRB3 expression was detected in vitro in HepG2 and Huh7 hepatocarcinoma cell lines. Simultaneously, CCK8 and EdU were used to detect cell proliferation after TRB3 targeted inhibition with small interfering RNA. CCK8 and EdU were used to detect cell proliferation. Flow cytometry assay was used to detect apoptosis. Transwell assay was used to evaluate migration ability. Simultaneously, Western blot was used to detect changes in apoptosis, migration-related proteins and AKT phosphorylation activity. The mean comparison between the two groups was performed by t-test, and the comparison between multiple groups was performed by one-way analysis of variance. Results: Western blot showed that the expression of TRB3 was significantly up-regulated in HCC tissues. Compared with normal liver tissues adjacent to cancer, the relative expression levels were 0.78 ± 0.12 and 0.29 ± 0.09, respectively, P < 0.01, and the difference was statistically significant. After interfering siRNA inhibited TRB3, CCK8 and EdU tests showed that the proliferation activity of HepG2 and Huh7 cells were significantly weakened (P < 0.05). Flow cytometry results showed that the apoptotic proportions of HepG2 and Huh7 cells was significantly increased (P < 0.01). Western blot also showed that the expression of apoptosis regulatory proteins BAX and BIM were significantly increased (P < 0.01). Transwell assay results showed that the migration ability of HepG2 and Huh7 cells was decreased (P < 0.05), and the expression of migration regulatory proteins MMP4 and MMP9 was also significantly down-regulated. Western blot results showed that the AKT phosphorylation level was significantly increased. Conclusion: TRB3 regulates hepatocarcinoma cells proliferation, apoptosis and migration by inhibiting the AKT phosphorylation activity. Therefore, TRB3 may be a potential target site for the liver cancer treatment.

Abstract
Objective: To understand sexual needs and factors of risky sexual behaviors among elderly men at different ages in two communities of Qiandongnan Miao and Dong autonomous prefecture and provide basis for targeted HIV prevention and intervention. Methods: Two communities in the prefecture were selected as study sites. Questionnaire surveys were carried out among elderly men aged 50 and over who visited or consulted in the communities from June to December 2018, and they were tested for HIV and syphilis antibodies. Results: Among 400 elderly men, 209 (52.2%) were 50-64 years old, and 191(47.8%) were above 65 years old. They were mainly Miao people, accounting for 66.3% (265/400), and 235 (58.8%) had an education no more than 6 years. HIV awareness of the two age groups were only 25.8% (54/199) and 26.2% (50/191), respectively. Among those aged 50-64, 142 (68.0%) felt normal sexual desire, and 153 (73.6%) reported penile erections or erections in most cases whenever sex, and 52.9% (110) ejaculated most of the time. HIV prevalence was 1.0% (4/400). Compared with the over 65-year-old group, the proportion of having sex with spouse/stable partners (89.5%, 179/200), proportion of no condom use with their spouse/stable sexual partners during the most recent sex (93.8%, 168/179), proportion of having casual sex (11.0%, 23/209) and commercial sex (3.8%, 8/209) were all higher among 50-64 age group. In comparison to those aged over 65 years old, average monthly income>3 000, and use of sex helper, aged 50-64 (OR=2.70, 95%CI: 1.22-5.95), average monthly income ≤1 000 yuan (OR=2.79, 95%CI: 1.25-6.21), and no use of sex helper (OR=3.78) (95%CI: 1.65-8.67) were related factors of HIV risky sexual behavior last time. Conclusion: Elderly men in the minority prefecture had low HIV awareness. Compared with those≥65 years old, the 50-64 age group had more active sexual behaviors and higher sexual needs. Those from 50-64 age group, with lower economic level and good sexual ability were more likely to have HIV risky sexual behaviors.

Abstract
The in-plane magnetic hysteresis loops of Fe3O4/SrTiO3(STO) and Fe3O4/STO/Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3(BSTO) heterostructures have been investigated at 200 K under various electric fields. The bottom BSTO layer of the STO/BSTO bilayer is used to improve the dielectric properties of the top STO layer. The polarization of the STO/BSTO bilayer is ∼78% larger than that of the STO layer at room temperature due to the improvement of surface topography and the contribution of electrostatic interlayer coupling. A significant enlargement (∼70%) in the magnetoelectric response of Fe3O4/STO/BSTO heterostructure has been achieved at 200 K and 300 kV cm-1 after introducing the BSTO layer, since the STO/BSTO bilayer with larger dielectric constant supplies more polarization charges at its interface to the Fe3O4 layer than the STO layer. It indicates that the dielectric bilayer improves the polarization and thus benefits the magnetoelectric coupling in the multiferroic heterostructure.

Abstract
Currently, the main sample pretreatment methods for forensic toxic analysis are liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) and solid-phase extraction (SPE). As a simple, convenient, and low-cost LLE method, dispersion liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) has high enrichment factor and good extraction efficiency, and therefore has attracted the attention of many researchers in the field of toxicology analysis in recent years. As a multi-functional microextraction method, DLLME has been widely used in the analysis of pesticides, sleeping sedatives, drugs and heavy metal poisons in forensic toxic analysis. Meanwhile, it can also be used in combination with such a variety of analytical instruments as gas chromatography-electron capture detectors (GC-ECD), high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detectors (HPLC-DAD). As a sample pretreatment method, DLLME has the advantages of simple operation, less use of organic solvent, reliable results and good reproducibility, thus can meet the requirements of modern court toxic analysis.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the screening strategy of group B streptococcus (GBS) in the reproductive tract of women in the third trimester and analyze its impact on pregnancy outcome. Methods: A total of 85 461 pregnant women in 35-37 weeks of gestation from Bao'an Maternity and Child Health Hospital, Jinan University from January 2011 to June 2018 were enrolled. They were divided into 3 periods according to different GBS screening strategies, the unscreened period included 31 384 cases (36.72%), 33 267 cases (38.93%) were included in partial screening period, 20 810 cases (24.35%) were included in screening period. All GBS screening positive pregnant women were given intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP). The impact on pregnancy outcomes, and the impact of different GBS collection transport and culture methods on the positive rate of GBS screening were analyzed. Results: (1) The incidence of neonatal early onset GBS disease (EOGBSD) in unscreened period was 0.03% (11/31 773), in partial screening period was 0.02%(6/33 887), and in screening period, the incidence of neonatal EOGBSD decreased to 0, the difference was statistically significant (χ(2)=7.86, P=0.02).(2) The incidence of hematogenous infection of GBS in pregnant women was 0.02%(6/33 887) in partial screening period, and there was none in screening period, there was no significant difference (adjusted χ(2)=3.75, P=0.05). (3) In the screening period, the positive rate of GBS was 14.08%(2 719/19 306), which was significantly higher than the positive rate of GBS in the partial screening period (11.48%, 2 058/17 920; χ(2)=56.12, P=0.00). (4) Antibiotic sensitivity tests of 4 777 GBS strains showed that the antibiotics with higher resistance rate were tetracycline (81.52%, 3 896/4 777), erythromycin (66.59%, 3 181/4 777), and clindamycin (64.31%, 3 072/4 777). The combination of erythromycin, clindamycin and tetracycline was the most common resistant pattern, accounting for 48.80% (2 331/4 777). No penicillin, ceftriaxone or vancomycin resistant strains was found. Conclusions: GBS screening strategy in different regions could combine the local neonatal EOGBSD incidence rate, maternal GBS colonization rate, and the socioeconomic factors to determine whether universal GBS screening or screening for high-risk maternal women. GBS screening positive rate is related to the population, scope of the investigation, the sample collection, delivery and culture methods. The multi-drug resistance rate of GBS is high.

Abstract
Objective: To study the different expression of 4 microRNA (miRNA, miR) during the osteogenesis differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (BMSC) cultured in high-fat or normal environment and to explore the relationship of these miRNAs with disheveled 2 during osteogenesis differentiation. Methods: BMSC were cultured with 2 ml normal osteogenic induction (control group) and high-fat osteogenic induction (high-fat group) respectively. On the 3rd, 5th, 7th,14th, 21st day, quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) was used to analyze expression levels of four miRNAs (miR-21-5p, miR-29c-3p, miR-138-5p and miR-351-5p), mRNA of disheveled 2, osteogenic related factors such as alkaline phosphatase (ALP), Runt-related transcription gene 2 (Runx2). And the protein was detected by Western blotting. After BMSC were transfected by 50 μl 50 nmol/L miRNA mimics/inhibitors/negative controls respectively, BMSC were put on osteogenic induction, on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th day, ALP activity was detected. On the 7th day, ALP staining was to observe the degree of osteogenesis differentiation, and Western blotting was adopted to analyze the expression of dishevelled 2 and other osteogenic related factors, while qPCR was used to analyze the expression of disheveled 2 mRNA. After 293T cells were co-transfected with disheveled 2 wild-type/mutant firefly luciferase reporter plasmid with either negative control (NC) or a mimic of these four miRNAs respectively for 48 h, luciferase activities were measured. Results: On the 21th day, the expressions of miR-21-5p, miR-29c-3p, miR-138-5p and miR-351-5p in high-fat groups were higher by 20%, 60%, 340% and 4 420% respectively than those in control groups (P<0.05). The expression of ALP and Runx2 in BMSC decreased after BMSC transfected miR-21-5p and miR-29c-3p mimics, while increased after transfected miR-21-5p and miR-29c-3p inhibitors. The expression of disheveled 2 decreased by 35% after transfected by miR-29c-3p mimic, while it increased by 269% after transfected by miR-29c-3p inhibitor (P<0.05). Transfection of the miR-29c-3p mimics significantly decreased the luciferase activity of wild-type 3'-UTR compared with NC control (P<0.05). There were no statistical significances among other groups. Conclusions: miRNAs had better expression during osteogenesis differentiation of BMSC in high-fat environment; miR-29c-3p could negatively regulate the osteogenesis differentiation of BMSC by targets on dishevelled 2.

Abstract
Objective: The goal of this research was to understand the demographic distribution and related factors of non-marital and non-commercial heterosexual transmission (non-commercial transmission) for HIV/AIDS (human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). Methods: Data related to HIV/AIDS infected by non-marital heterosexual transmission and whose present address was in Qian Dongnan, were collected from Information System on the HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control. Information included demographic characteristics, the members of non-marital sex partners, transmission path, detection source, CD4(+)T lymphocyte level, et al. cases belong to homosexual history, injective drug use or non-classified non-marital heterosexuality transmission were excluded, totally collect HIV/AIDS 919 cases. Multivariate logistic regressions were used to analyze potential factors associated with non-marital and non-commercial heterosexual transmission. In addition, in March and June 2017, using a convenience sampling, we conducted one-to-one interviews among 10 HIV/AIDS who were infected by non-marital heterosexuality and had non-marital and non-commercial heterosexual experience in Kaili Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The content of the interview included basic information, sexual orientation, the main place of making friends and sexual behavior, attitude to commercial heterosexuality and non-martial and non-commercial heterosexuality and so on. Results: Out of the 919 cases, 645 (70.2%) were male, the proportion of non-commercial transmission was 55.06% (506). The proportion of female HIV/AIDS with non-commercial transmission was 84.7% (232), which was higher than male (42.5%(274)) (χ(2)=138.35, P<0.001). The proportion of Han HIV/AIDS with non-commercial transmission was 61.5% (275), which was higher than other religion (52.2%(412)) (χ(2)=6.32, P=0.012). The proportion of HIV/AIDS with non-commercial transmission who had 0-5 non-marital sexual partners was 58.8% (498), which was higher than who had>5 non-marital sexual partners (11.1%(8)) (χ(2)=61.10, P<0.001). The proportion of HIV/AIDS with non-commercial transmission who lived mobile was 72.9% (94), which was higher than who lived fixedly (52.2%(412)) (χ(2)=19.34, P<0.001). Qualitative interviews results revealed that the age of the respondents were 22-69. Respondents whose ages are in 22-34 were more likely to use mobile phone (4/10) and respondents whose ages are in 35-69 were less likely to look partners through party and the context of working. Conclusion: The proportion of cases being infected by non-marital and non-commercial heterosexual transmission in Qian dongnan was higher than general national levels. The characteristics of sex, marriage status, migration, vocation, the members of non-marital sex partners were significant differed between commercial heterosexual transmission and non-marital and non-commercial heterosexual transmission.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to compare the effect of source (corn DDGS, rice bran, or soybean) or form of oil (extracted or intact) on apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) and true total tract digestibility (TTTD) of acid-hydrolyzed ether extract (AEE) and fatty acids. The study determined and compared the ATTD or TTTD of AEE and fatty acids in extracted corn oil, rice oil, and soybean oil with intact oil in corn DDGS, full-fat rice bran, and full-fat soybean. Seventy-eight barrows (initial BW = 47.2 ± 3.9 kg; Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire) were allotted to 1 of 13 dietary treatments in a randomized complete block design with 6 barrows in each dietary treatment. The 13 experimental diets included 1 cornstarch-soybean meal basal diet (AEE, 0.56%) and 3 diets containing 6% extracted oils (corn oil, rice oil, and soybean oil) and 9 diets supplemented with 3 levels of corn DDGS (17%, 34%, and 51%), full-fat rice bran (14%, 28%, and 42%), and full-fat soybean (12%, 24%, and 36%). These diets provided about 2%, 4%, and 6% intact oil, respectively. The barrows were housed in individual metabolism crates and were fed the assigned test diets at 4% of initial BW per day. A 5-d total collection of feces followed a 7-d diet adaptation period. The ATTD of AEE were calculated for each diet. The endogenous flow of AEE associated with each ingredient and values for TTTD were calculated using regression methods. The ATTD of AEE were greater ( < 0.05) for extracted oil than for intact oil. Compared to extracted oil, intact oil had lower ( < 0.01) ATTD of palmitic acid (C16:0), stearic acid (C18:0), oleic acid (C18:1), linoleic acid (C18:2), and linolenic acid (C18:3). However, a source by form interaction ( < 0.01) was observed for ATTD of C18:0, C18:2, and C18:3. The ATTD of C18:0, C18:2, and C18:3 in extracted corn and rice oil were greater compared with intact corn DDGS and rice oil ( < 0.05), while there was no significant difference for the ATTD of C18:0, C18:2, and C18:3 between extracted soybean oil and intact oil in full-fat soybean. In conclusion, lipids that are extracted have a greater digestibility compared with intact lipids, and this is especially true regarding saturated fatty acids. The ATTD of AEE in 2 forms of rice oil (intact oil and extracted oil) was less than the values in corn oil and soybean oil. The TTTD of AEE in corn DDGS and full-fat soybeans were greater than in full-fat rice bran.

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the DE and ME as well as the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of CP and AA in flaxseed expellers fed to growing pigs. In Exp. 1, the DE and ME were determined using 66 crossbred growing pigs (Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire; 54.2 ± 2.3 kg BW) fed 1 of 11 diets in a completely randomized design. The diets included a corn-soybean meal basal diet and 10 experimental diets containing 29.16% flaxseed expellers supplemented at the expense of corn and soybean meal. In Exp. 2, 11 growing pigs (35.5 ± 3.4 kg), fitted with a T-cannula at the distal ileum, were assigned to 6 × 11 Youden square design with 6 periods and 11 diets. The diets included a N-free diet based on cornstarch and sucrose and 10 test diets containing 40% flaxseed expellers as the sole source of AA. Chromic oxide (0.3%) was used as an indigestible marker. There was considerable variation in the chemical composition among the 10 flaxseed expellers. The CV were greater than 10% for ether extract (EE), NDF, ADF, crude fiber, and Ca and ranged from 7 to 12% for the AA. On a DM basis, the DE and ME ranged from 2,786 to 3,730 and from 2,588 to 3,530 kcal/kg, respectively. The apparent total tract digestibility of GE ranged from 59.91 to 75.83% (mean = 70.92%). Ether extract, GE, and NDF were the best predictors to determine DE and ME. The best prediction equations were DE = -3,231 + (1.58 × GE) - (25.79 × % NDF) ( = 0.90) or DE = 4,189 + (56.78 × % EE) - (30.59 × % NDF) ( = 0.85) and ME = -2,968 + (1.47 × GE) - (24.82 × % NDF) ( = 0.85) or ME = 3,931 + (53.77 × % EE) - (29.31 × % NDF) ( = 0.82), respectively. In Exp. 2, there were significant differences in the AID and SID of CP and all AA with the exception of Phe ( < 0.05). The AID and SID of CP averaged 70.16 and 78.04%, respectively. For the indispensable AA, the AID and SID of Thr were the least, with average values of 70.70 and 76.68%, respectively. The digestibility of Arg and Met were the greatest, averaging over 88 and 91% for AID and SID, respectively. The AID and SID of Lys ranged from 66.10 to 81.82% (mean = 74.14%) and from 70.90 to 85.41% (mean = 78.13%), respectively. These results indicate that there is significant variability in chemical composition, energy content, and the SID and AID of CP and AA among the selected flaxseed expellers. The DE and ME of flaxseed expellers are primarily related to their EE and NDF concentrations.

Abstract
The effects of straw returning combined the reducing application of chemical fertilizer for crop yield, soil nutrients and enzyme activity were studied in a typical southwestern hilly area of China in a rice-vegetable (Brassica juncea var. gemmifera Lin.) cropping system. The purple soil was selected as the target type of soil, and the Pioneer Town, Jiangjin District, Chongqing, China was selected as the typical southwestern hilly area during 2013 and 2014.Scientific basis based on the optimized fertilization strategy and the recyclable utilization of straw was provided through a field in-situ experiment in this study. There were five treatments in the field experiment: F (conventional fertilizer), 90% F+AS (100% straw with 90% conventional fertilizer), 80% F+AS (100% straw with 80% conventional fertilizer), 70% F+AS (100% straw with 70% conventional fertilizer), 50% F+DS (200% straw with 50% conventional fertilizer), and the 100% straw was 7500 kg·hm-2. The results showed that the yields of rice and vegetable were all increased in straw with reduced fertilizer treatments (3.0%-17.9% in rice yield and 12.2%-36.4% in vegetable yield) compared with conventional fertilizer (F) treatment. Moreover, the yield of rice in the second season was also increased by 820-1240 kg·hm-2. Soil pH values in straw with reduced fertilizer treatments raised by 0.06-0.55 compared with F treatment, especially in straw with 70% and 80% of conventional fertilizer dosage which increased by 6.74-6.88 and 6.52-6.84, respectively. The highest content of soil organic matter was 41.01 g·kg-1 in straw with 80% of conventional fertilizer treatment. For the aspect of soil available nutrients, straw with 80% of conventional fertilizer treatment increased 110-178 mg·kg-1 content of soil available nitrogen and 31.3-64.0 mg·kg-1 content of soil available phosphorus. However, the excessive application of straw had negative effect on the accumulation of soil available phosphorus. In the same cultivation period, the contents of soil urease increased significantly in straw with 70% and 80% of conventional fertilizer treatments, which increased by 13.6%-76.4% and 20.1%-75.0% compared with F treatment. The contents of soil catalase in straw with reduced fertilizer treatments were significantly higher than F treatment; in first two seasons, soil catalase contents increased by 0.37 and 0.31 mL·(h·g)-1 relative to F treatment in straw with reduced fertilizer treatment (80% of conventional fertilizer). With the increasing time of planting, the soil phosphatase content in the third season was higher than those in first two seasons. Straw with 70% and 80% of fertilizer treatments increased the activity of soil phosphatase by 45.2% and 48.2% compared with F treatment. It was concluded that straw application with 70% or 80% dosage of conventional fertilizer could benefit the rice-vegetable rotation in the southwest hilly area of China.

Abstract
Congenital heart disease in children is a type of birth defect. Previous studies have suggested that the transcription factor, TBX20, is involved in the occurrence and development of congenital heart disease in children; however, the specific regulatory mechanisms are yet to be evaluated. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the TBX20 polymorphism and the occurrence and development of congenital heart disease. The TBX20 gene sequence was obtained from the NCBI database and the polymorphic locus candidate was predicted. Thereafter, the specific gene primers were designed for the restriction fragment length polymorphism-polymerase chain reaction (RFLP-PCR) of DNA extracted from the blood of 80 patients with congenital heart disease and 80 controls. The results of the PCR were subjected to correlation analysis to identify the differences between the amplicons and to determine the relationship between the TBX20 gene polymorphism and congenital heart disease. One of the single nucleotide polymorphic locus was found to be rs3999950: c.774T>C (Ala265Ala). The TC genotype frequency in the patients was higher than that in the controls, similar to that for the C locus. The odds ratio of the TC genotypes was above 1, indicating that the presence of the TC genotype increases the incidence of congenital heart diseases. Thus, rs3999950 may be associated with congenital heart disease, and TBX20 may predispose children to the defect.

Abstract
We examined the relationship between type 2 diabetes and skin wound healing. GSE38396 was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database and preprocessed using the RMA function of the Affy package. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified using the limma package, then DAVID was applied to per-form Gene Ontology functional annotation and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analysis. MicroRNAs and their target genes were screened from the miRecords database and subjected to functional analysis. Finally, the STRING online database was applied to identify the protein-protein interaction relationships, and a combined score > 0.5 was considered to indicate an interaction. A total of 421 DEGs (208 upregulated and 213 downregulated genes) were identified in the skin lymphatic endothelial cells of patients with type II diabetes. Twenty-four microRNAs and 34 target genes were screened, including those involved in cell migration, regulation of cell proliferation, cell death, and cell adhesion regulation, among others. Protein-protein interaction network clustering analysis identified a module composed of 25 genes, and INTERPRO protein domain enrichment analysis showed that the protein domain of the clustering module main-ly contained the insulin-like growth factor binding proteins IGFBP3 and CYR61. IGFBP3 and CYR61 may play important roles in skin wound healing in diabetes patients. This information may be useful for developing methods to treat skin refractory wounds in type II diabetes.

Abstract
Although radical nephrectomy alone is widely accepted as the standard of care in
localized treatment for renal cell carcinoma (RCC), it is not sufficient for the
treatment of metastatic RCC (mRCC), which invariably leads to an unfavorable outcome
despite the use of multiple therapies. Currently, sequential targeted agents are
recommended for the management of mRCC, but the optimal drug sequence is still
debated. This case was a 57-year-old man with clear-cell mRCC who received multiple
therapies following his first operation in 2003 and has survived for over 10 years
with a satisfactory quality of life. The treatments given included several surgeries,
immunotherapy, and sequentially administered sorafenib, sunitinib, and everolimus
regimens. In the course of mRCC treatment, well-planned surgeries, effective
sequential targeted therapies and close follow-up are all of great importance for
optimal management and a satisfactory outcome.

Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to determine the digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) contents of corn gluten feed (CGF) for finishing pigs and to develop equations predicting the DE and ME content from the chemical composition of the CGF samples, as well as validate the accuracy of the prediction equations. In Exp. 1, ten CGF samples from seven provinces of China were collected and fed to 66 finishing barrows (Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire) with an initial body weight (BW) of 51.9±5.5 kg. The pigs were assigned to 11 diets comprising one basal diet and 10 CGF test diets with six pigs fed each diet. The basal diet contained corn (76%), dehulled soybean meal (21%) and premix (3%). The ten test diets were formulated by substituting 25% of the corn and dehulled soybean meal with CGF and contained corn (57%), dehulled soybean meal (15.75%), CGF (24.25%) and premix (3%). In Exp. 2, two additional CGF sources were collected as validation samples to test the accuracy of the prediction equations. In this experiment, 18 barrows (Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire) with an initial BW of 61.1±4.0 kg were randomly allotted to be fed either the basal diet or two CGF containing diets which had a similar composition as used in Exp. 1. The DE and ME of CGF ranged from 10.37 to 12.85 MJ/kg of dry matter (DM) and 9.53 to 12.49 MJ/kg of DM, respectively. Through stepwise regression analysis, several prediction equations of DE and ME were generated. The best fit equations were: DE, MJ/kg of DM = 18.30-0.13 neutral detergent fiber-0.22 ether extract, with R(2) = 0.95, residual standard deviation (RSD) = 0.21 and p<0.01; and ME, MJ/kg of DM = 12.82+0.11 Starch-0.26 acid detergent fiber, with R(2) = 0.94, RSD = 0.20 and p<0.01. These results indicate that the DE and ME content of CGF varied substantially but the DE and ME for finishing pigs can be accurately predicted from equations based on nutritional analysis.

Abstract
The objective of this experiment was to determine the net energy requirements for maintenance of growing and finishing pigs using regression models. Thirty-six growing (27.38 ± 2.24 kg) and 36 finishing (70.25 ± 2.61 kg) barrows were used and within each phase. Pigs received a corn-soybean meal diet fed at 6 levels of feed intake, which were calculated as 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, or 100% of the estimated ad libitum ME intake (2,400 kJ ME/kg BW(0.6)·d(-1)) of the pigs. Measurements were conducted on 6 pigs per feeding level and per stage of growth. After a 5-d adjustment period, barrows in the fasted treatment were kept in respiration chambers for 2 d to measure the fasting heat production. Barrows in the other treatments were kept individually in respiration chambers for a 5-d balance trial followed by a 2-d fasting period. Heat production (HP) in the fed state was measured and feces and urine were collected in the balance trial. The total HP increased (P < 0.01) with increasing feeding levels. Fasting HP increased (P < 0.01) as previous feeding level increased and was less (P = 0.012) in finishing pigs than growing pigs if calculated per kilogram BW(0.6) per day. When using an exponential regression analysis, ME requirements for maintenance were estimated at 973 and 921 kJ/kg BW(0.6)·d(-1) and NE requirements for maintenance were estimated at 758 and 732 kJ/kg BW(0.6)·d(-1) for growing and finishing pigs, respectively. The efficiencies of using ME for growth and for maintenance were estimated at 66 and 78.7% for growing and finishing pigs, respectively. It is concluded that exponential regression between HP and a wide range of ME intake may be used as a new method to determine the NE requirement for maintenance.

Abstract
PURPOSE We used a superficial parotid lobe-sparing delineation approach for dose optimization with better protection for the parotid glands in intensity-modulated radiotherapy (imrt) for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (npc) patients. METHODS Compared with traditional contouring of the entire parotid glands as organs at risk (oars) in imrt for npc, we used a superficial parotid lobe-sparing delineation approach of contouring the superficial parotid lobes as oars. Changes in dose to the parotid glands, the targets, and other oars were evaluated. RESULTS The mean dose to the parotid glands overall decreased by more than 4 Gy in the test plans. Impressively, the mean dose to the superficial parotid lobes in the test plans was not more than 30 Gy, regardless of clinical stage. In T1-3 npc patients, the dose distributions for targets were not significantly different in the control plans and the test plans. However, for some T4 patients, the dose distributions for targets and brainstem in the test plans could not meet clinical requirements. CONCLUSIONS The superficial parotid lobe-sparing delineation approach can significantly lower the mean dose to the entire parotid and to the superficial parotid lobe in T1-3 npc patients, which would be expected to result in less xerostomia and better quality of life for those patients.

Abstract
The diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique with solid-state binding phases has been widely used for in situ collection and measurement of available heavy metals in waters, soils or sediments, whereas DGT with liquid binding phase is primarily used in the in situ analysis of heavy metals in waters. In this paper, rhizosphere soils of sugarcane were collected in Guangxi and the concentrations of cadmium (Cd) were determined by DGT with a solid-state binding phase of chelex100 (chelex100-DGT) and modified DGT with a liquid binding phase of sodium polyacrylate (CDM-PAAS-DGT). The result showed that the Cd contents in soils measured by DGT with both binding phases and Cd in the roots, leaves and unpolished stems of sugarcane had significant positive correlation. The extraction ability of the CDM-PAAAS-DGT was much higher than that of the chelex100-DGT. In addition, multivariate analyses were used to assess the impact of pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), soil organic matter (OM) and texture. Two principal components were extracted and the linear regression models were established. The Cd bioavailability in soils could be accurately predicted by the CDM-PAAAS-DGT technique, which expanded its applicable area.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to compare the detection rates of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency in neonates by fluorescent spot test (FST), enzyme assay and molecular methods, and to identify which method was a significant predictor of severe hyperbilirubinaemia. METHODS 74 term infants of Chinese descent admitted with severe hyperbilirubinaemia (total serum bilirubin equal or greater than 300 micromol/L) and 125 healthy term infants born in the hospital without severe hyperbilirubinaemia were recruited into the study. Specimens of blood were collected from each infant for FST, G6PD enzyme assay and TaqMan minor groove binder single nucleotide polymorphism genotyping assay. RESULTS 26 (13.1 percent) infants were diagnosed to have G6PD deficiency by FST. They had significantly lower median enzyme levels (0.8 IU/g Hb, interquartile range [IQR] 0.4-4.3) than those diagnosed to be normal (12.0 IU/g Hb, IQR 10.3-15.8) (p-value is less than 0.0001). Based on the enzyme assay, 39 (19.6 percent) infants had G6PD deficiency at an enzyme cut-off level of less than 8.5 IU/g Hb. G6PD mutation was detected in 27 (13.6 percent) infants. Logistic regression analysis showed that the only significant predictors of severe hyperbilirubinaemia were G6PD deficiency based on a cut-off level of less than 8.5 IU/g Hb (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 5.3, 95 percent confidence interval [CI] 2.4-11.4; p-value is less than 0.0001) and exclusive breast-feeding (adjusted OR 11.4, 95 percent CI 3.1-42.4; p-value is less than 0.0001). The gender and birth weight of infants, FST results, G6PD mutation and the actual G6PD enzyme levels were not significant predictors. CONCLUSION A G6PD enzyme level of less than 8.5 IU/g Hb is a significant predictor of severe hyperbilirubinaemia.

Abstract
Using numerical optimization algorithm, non-periodic Mo/Si, Mo/Be, and Ni/C broad angular multilayer analyzers have been designed. At the wavelength of 13 nm and the angular range of 45~49 degrees , the Mo/Si and Mo/Be multilayer can provide the plateau s-reflectivity of 65% and 45%, respectively. At 5.7 nm, the s-reflectivity of Ni/C multilayer is 16% in the 44~46 degrees range. The non-periodic Mo/Si broad angular multilayer was also fabricated using DC magnetron sputtering, and characterized using the soft X-ray polarimeter at BESSY. The s-reflectivity is higher than 45.6% over the angular range of 45~49 degrees at 13 nm, where, the degree of polarization is more than 99.98%.

Abstract
A (15)N abundance technique was employed to identify the source of NO(3)-N in groundwater under three commercial citrus production sites in central Florida. Water samples were collected from 0 to 300 and 300 to 600 cm depths in the surficial aquifer and analyzed for NO(3)-N and delta N-15 (delta (15)N). Groundwater samples were also collected in a residential area adjacent to one of the citrus groves and analyzed for NO(3)-N and delta (15)N. The delta (15)N values were in the range of (+)1 to (+)10% in both depths underneath the citrus groves. The range of delta (15)N measured in this study represents the range expected for groundwater that was impacted by NO(3)-N originated from mineralization of organic N from the soil as well as from the crop residue. There are occasional high delta (15)N values which are indicative of the effects of NH(3) volatilization losses of applied fertilizer N. The range of delta (15)N values for groundwater samples collected from the residential area adjacent to the citrus groves was very similar to that from the groundwater underneath the citrus groves. Thus, the source of NO(3)-N that impacted the groundwater under the citrus groves also impacted the groundwater in the adjacent residential area.

Abstract
A total of 216 Brown Dwarf laying hens (1.62 +/- 0.06 kg BW and 60 wk old) were fed 1 of 3 corn-soybean meal-based diets containing 0, 2.5, or 5.0% conjugated linoleic aicd (CLA) to explore its effects on the fatty acid composition of egg yolk, plasma, and liver as well as hepatic stearoyl-coenzyme A desaturase-1 (SCD-1) activity and its mRNA gene expression. Four hens were placed in wired-floored cages (45 x 40 x 45 cm) and 3 cages were grouped as 1 replicate, resulting in 6 replicates per treatment. The experimental diets were fed for 54 d, and then eggs were collected to determine the fatty acid composition of egg yolk. Four eggs were randomly selected from the total day's production for each replicate, and the contents were pooled prior to analysis. On d 56, one randomly chosen hen from each replicate (6 hens per replicate and a total of 18 hens) was bled via heart puncture and then killed in order to collect liver samples to measure the fatty acid profile of plasma and liver tissue as well as hepatic SCD-1 activity and its mRNA abundance. Dietary supplementation of CLA resulted in a significant deposition of CLA in egg yolk, plasma, and liver lipids (P < 0.01). As the dietary level of CLA increased, the concentration of saturated fatty acids in egg yolk, plasma, and liver also increased (P < 0.05). However, the concentration of monounsaturated fatty acids in these same tissues decreased (P < 0.01). Compared with the control, the activity of SCD-1 was reduced by feeding 2.5% CLA (P < 0.05) without a change in SCD-1 mRNA gene expression. However, feeding 5% CLA reduced both SCD-1 activity and mRNA abundance (P < 0.05). These results indicate that the conversion of saturated to monounsaturated fatty acids in egg yolk, plasma, and liver might be modulated directly at hepatic mRNA gene expression levels, or may be indirectly regulated at the downstream post-transcriptional levels.

Abstract
Five hundred and four 40-wk-old Brown Dwarf hens (1.51 +/- 0.08 kg BW) were fed corn-soybean meal diets containing 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6% conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) for 56 d to measure the effects of dietary CLA on laying hen productivity and egg quality during refrigerated storage. Four hens were placed in 1 cage, and 3 cages were grouped as 1 replicate resulting in 6 replicates per treatment. After feeding the experimental diets for 11 d, eggs were collected to determine the fatty acid composition of egg yolks. From d 12 to 18, eggs from hens fed diets containing 0, 2, 4, and 6% CLA diets were stored at 4 degrees C for up to 28 d. At designated times (1, 14, or 28 d), eggs were taken, broken, and shelled to evaluate water content, pH, and ion concentration. Firmness of hard-cooked egg yolk was also determined. With increased dietary CLA, feed intake, BW gain, rate of egg production, egg weight, and feed efficiency all decreased linearly (P < 0.01). The weight of the yolk, albumen, and shell decreased linearly (P < 0.01) with increasing dietary CLA. Concentration of CLA in the yolk lipids increased quadratically (P < 0.01), with increasing dietary CLA. Concurrent increases (P < 0.01) in the concentration of myristic, palmitic, and stearic acids and decreases (P < 0.01) in oleic, linoleic, linolenic, and archidonic acids in egg yolk lipids were observed. Days of storage and CLA (P < 0.01) increased yolk firmness. Egg yolk water content and pH increased with storage and CLA content (P < 0.01). Corresponding decreases were observed in albumen pH. Regardless of dietary treatment, the concentrations of Na, K, and Mg in egg yolks increased with longer storage time. At 28 d of storage, there was a linear (P < 0.01) increase in Na, K, and Mg content in egg yolks as dietary CLA increased. In contrast to the egg yolk, the concentrations of Na, K, and Mg in egg albumen decreased with storage time. On d 28, there was a linear decrease (P < 0.01) in the Na content of albumen with increasing CLA. This study suggests that the greater firmness of CLA-fed eggs might be related to the change of pH, water content, and ion concentrations during refrigerated storage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE One of the prevailing hypotheses for the pathogenesis of preeclampsia is the "ischemic model." It assumes that reduced uteroplacental perfusion is the primary step and the point of convergence of diverse pathogenic processes in the development of preeclampsia. One might expect a fetus under such "ischemic conditions" to be at an increased risk of later development of cerebral palsy (CP). The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that maternal preeclampsia increases the risk of CP in preterm and low-birth-weight infants. METHODS A meta-analysis was performed based on published articles identified by searching computerized databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Current Contents, Biological Abstracts, and Dissertation Abstracts) from 1966 through 1999. Ten observational studies on the association between preeclampsia and CP were identified based on prespecified inclusion criteria. Two independent reviewers extracted data and assessed the methodological quality of eligible articles. Odds ratios (OR) of CP for preeclampsia from individual studies were pooled. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Cerebral palsy. RESULTS In case-control studies, preeclampsia was associated with a statistically significant decreased risk of CP [pooled adjusted OR, 0.50; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.33-0.81; p < 0.01). In cohort studies, preeclampsia was associated with a nonstatistically significant reduced risk of CP (pooled OR, 0.91; 95% CI, 0.35-2.41; p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Preeclampsia may be associated with a decreased risk of CP in preterm and low-birth-weight infants. This challenges the currently held belief that reduced uteroplacental perfusion is the unique pathophysiological process in preeclampsia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To study prevalence, risk factors, and maternal and infant outcomes of women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). METHODS A retrospective cohort study was performed based on 111563 pregnancies delivered between 1991 through 1997 in 39 hospitals in northern and central Alberta, Canada. Multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals, and to control for confounding variables. RESULTS The prevalence of GDM was 2.5%. Risk factors for GDM included age >35 years, obesity, history of prior neonatal death, and prior cesarean section. Teenage mothers and women who drank alcohol were less likely to have GDM. Mothers with GDM were at increased risk of presenting with pre-eclampsia, premature rupture of membranes, cesarean section, and preterm delivery. Infants born to mothers with GDM were at higher risk of being macrosomic or large-for-gestational-age. CONCLUSIONS Specific conditions predispose to GDM which itself is associated with a significantly increased risk of maternal and fetal morbidity.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to explore the neuroimmunomodulator effect of interleukin (IL)-2, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and interferon (IFN)-alpha in West syndrome (WS). Twenty-three cases of WS (13 males and 10 females, aged 4-14 months old) who first visited and consisted from 10 cryptogenic and 13 symptomatic, were enrolled in this study. Double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to measure serum IL-2, TNF-alpha and IFN-alpha levels in 23 patients with WS and the data were compared to those of 15 healthy infants who were matched with regard to age and sex. Levels of all three cytokines were significantly higher in both cryptogenic and symptomatic WS groups than the control group. Serum IL-2 levels in symptomatic WS were significantly higher than that in cryptogenic WS. There was a positive correlation between IL-2 and TNF-alpha in both cryptogenic and symptomatic WS groups. The immune systems of patients with WS are in an activated state. An imbalance in cytokine levels may be involved in the immunopathology of WS.

Abstract
Vital statistics and other administrative data are becoming an increasingly important source for epidemiologic research and surveillance. This study, the first in Canada, evaluated the usefulness of birth registry data on congenital anomalies in Alberta. We compared the number of birth defects recorded in the birth registry with the number collected through the Alberta Congenital Anomalies Surveillance System (ACASS) between 1985 and 1996. In addition, records of 3,881 (99.9 %) babies with (a) birth defect(s) from the ACASS during 1994--1996 were matched to the birth registry by deterministic linkage. Of these, 2,969 babies had single anomalies that were used for validity analysis. The anomalies were grouped by those within International Classification of Disease (ICD) ICD-9 Section XIV (ICD-9=740.0-759.9) and those outside the Section XIV. For those within Section XIV, 24 summary diagnostic categories were examined. As shown, the total case count from the birth registry was on average about 3 % lower than that from the ACASS between 1985 and 1996. The validity of diagnostic categories is high for the 24 categories examined, with an overall agreement of between 80 % and 100 %. The sensitivity, positive predictive value, and kappa are also high for all these anomalies combined during 1994 and 1996, showing 95.7 %, 99.8, and 0.81 respectively.

Abstract
Immunohistochemical staining was carried out on 79 samples of lung cancers using anti-CD44v6 antibody. Strong positivity for CD44v6 was observed in the basal cells of bronchial epithelium, squamous metaplasia, and type II pneumocytes. The expression of CD44v6 in primary lesions of non-small cell lung cancers and small cell lung cancers was 67.6% (48/71) and 0% (0/8) respectively, while the expression of CD44v6 in metastases of lymph nodes was 57.6% (19/33) and 0% (0/5), respectively. It is suggest that expression of CD44v6 is correlated with histologic type, differentiation and metastasis of lung cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the relationship between maternal smoking and preeclampsia and whether this association differs between primiparous and multiparous women. STUDY DESIGN We conducted a population-based, retrospective, cohort study of 58,216 singleton pregnancies from northern and central Alberta, Canada, between 1995 and 1997. Multivariate logistic regression was used to control for maternal alcohol consumption, drug dependence, maternal age, maternal weight, prior intrauterine growth restriction and other confounders. RESULTS Maternal smoking was associated with a significantly reduced overall risk of preeclampsia (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: .61; 95% confidence interval [CI]: .50-.75; P < .01). Stratified analyses showed that in primiparous pregnancies, maternal smoking was associated with a significantly decreased risk (aOR: .63; 95% CI: .50-.80; P < .01); in multiparous women, maternal smoking was not associated with a statistically significant decreased risk of preeclampsia (aOR: 0.72; 95% CI: .51-1.02; P > .05). CONCLUSION Maternal smoking is protective against preeclampsia. Understanding the underlying biologic mechanisms of this protective effect may advance our knowledge of the pathogenesis of preeclampsia.

Abstract
Xenopus laevis melanophores stably expressing 7-transmembrane G-protein-coupled receptors were established and evaluated, either as a primary screening utility for antagonists of the human calcium receptor, or as a screen to assign function to binding inhibitors of human cannabinoid receptors. Stably or transiently expressing melanophores responded selectively to respective effectors of the human calcium, cannabinoid, and neurokinin-1 receptors. Several selective cannabinoid receptor-binding inhibitors of known potency were characterized as agonists or antagonists of the human peripheral cannabinoid (CB(2)) receptor. The results were consistent with changes in cAMP content of hCB(2)-transfected human embryonic kidney (HEK) cells challenged with the same CB(2)-binding antagonists. A stable melanophore cell line expressing the human calcium receptor was used to screen a compound collection directly for functional antagonists, several of which were confirmed as antagonists in secondary screens by stimulating parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion from bovine parathyroid cells. The percentage of hits in this cell-based screen was reasonably low (1.2%), indicating minimal interference due to toxic effects and validating melanophores as a primary screening modality. Also described is the development of a novel procedure for cryopreservation and reconstitution of cells retaining functional human receptors. ()

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to identify genes that are differentially expressed in normal versus osteoarthritic human articular cartilage as either potential novel therapeutic targets or diagnostic markers of this disease. DESIGN mRNA was isolated from histologically normal and osteoarthritic adult human articular cartilage. The Differential Display technique was employed which identified differentially expressed genes in the normal and diseased tissue. Northern and reverse Northern hybridization were used to confirm the gene expression pattern. Immunohistochemistry and in-situ hybridization were used to localize expression of Egr-1 protein and mRNA respectively in cartilage. RESULTS A transcription factor, early growth response protein-1 (Egr-1) was found to be down-regulated more than six-fold in multiple human OA cartilage samples when compared to normal tissue. Immunohistochemistry indicated that Egr-1 was expressed throughout normal adult cartilage, in deep-, mid- and superficial-zones. In contrast, in OA cartilage there was expression of Egr-1 mRNA and protein only in the chondrocytes undergoing cloning. CONCLUSIONS Egr-1 is differentially expressed in OA versus normal cartilage and because of its role in transcriptional activation and repression and regulation of proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis, Egr-1 may play an important role in the pathogenesis of OA. Up-regulation of Egr-1 may therefore provide a novel therapeutic approach for either the prevention or treatment of OA.

Abstract
Mitochondrial F1F0 adenosinetriphosphatase (ATPase) is responsible for the majority of ATP synthesis during normoxic conditions, but under ischemic conditions it accounts for significant ATP hydrolysis. A previous study showed that preconditioning in isolated rat hearts is mediated by inhibition of this ATPase during ischemia. We tested this hypothesis in our isolated rat heart model of preconditioning. Preconditioning was accomplished by three 5-min periods of global ischemia separated by 5 min of reperfusion. This was followed by 20 min of global ischemia and 30 min of reperfusion. Preconditioning significantly enhanced reperfusion contractile function and reduced lactate dehydrogenase release but paradoxically reduced the time to onset of contracture during global ischemia. Myocardial ATP was depleted at a faster rate during the prolonged ischemia in preconditioned than in sham-treated hearts, which is consistent with the reduced time to contracture. ATP during reperfusion was repleted more rapidly in preconditioned hearts, which is consistent with their enhanced contractile function. Preconditioning significantly reduced lactate accumulation during the prolonged ischemia. We were not able to demonstrate that mitochondrial F1F0 ATPase (measured in submitochondrial particles) was inhibited by preconditioning before or during the prolonged ischemia. The mitochondrial ATPase inhibitor oligomycin significantly conserved ATP during ischemia and increased the time to the onset of contracture, which is consistent with inhibition of the mitochondrial ATPase. Our results show that preconditioning in rat hearts can be independent of mitochondrial ATPase inhibition as well as ATP conservation.

Abstract
This article describes the design of a unilateral rotational path removable partial denture to restore a single edentulous space with a tilted mandibular molar. It is modified from an original bilateral rotational path design and consists of several components, which are (1) the rotation axis, (2) the long occlusal rest, (3) the short bracing arms, (4) the rigid retainer and extended proximal plates, (5) the conventional direct retainer assembly, and (6) optional auxiliary rest. The stability and retention of the denture are controlled anteriorly by the buccal retentive clasp and lingual guide plate of the conventional direct retainer, and posteriorly by the rigid retainer and its buccally and lingually extended proximal plates. The clinical results of the dentures used in strictly selected situations are excellent; however, it is emphasized that a unilateral denture is only an alternative rather than a routine application. The risk of accidental aspiration is also of concern.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Our purpose was to determine the incidence and etiology of hypothermia during laparoscopic surgery and to evaluate the role of irrigation fluid temperature. STUDY DESIGN A prospective randomized study was performed of 35 women undergoing operative laparoscopy under general anesthesia who received surgical irrigation fluid either at ambient temperature or warmed to 39 degrees C. The core body temperature was determined with use of both an esophageal sensor and a tympanic membrane sensor and was expressed as the change from baseline. Additional data collected included age, height, weight, amount of irrigation fluid and intravenous fluid used, room temperature, length of anesthesia, and amount of carbon dioxide used for pneumoperitoneum. RESULTS Hypothermia occurred in 94% of all patients, with no difference in incidence between the groups. The minimal core temperature was lower in the ambient temperature group (-1.7 degrees +/- 0.2 degrees C) than in the warmed fluid group (-1.0 degrees +/- 0.2 degrees C). Of the variables measured, length of anesthesia and the amount of ambient temperature fluid alone explained the drop in core temperature. CONCLUSION Hypothermia is extremely common in laparoscopic surgery and is related to the length of anesthesia and the use of ambient temperature irrigation fluid. The use of warmed irrigation fluid can decrease, but not eliminate, this drop in core temperature.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our purpose was to evaluate the in vitro effect of cocaine on beta-adrenergic receptor function in pregnant human myometrium. STUDY DESIGN Myometrium was obtained from 25 pregnant women at term who were undergoing cesarean section but who were not in labor. Membrane preparations were assayed for cyclic adenosine monophosphate production after exposure to isoproterenol, sodium fluoride, or forskolin in the presence and absence of either cocaine or benzoylecgonine, a major metabolite of cocaine. RESULTS Cocaine inhibited isoproterenol-induced cyclic adenosine monophosphate production in concentrations as low as 10(-8) mol/L but had no effect on cyclic adenosine monophosphate production induced by sodium fluoride or forskolin. Benzoylecgonine (10(-4) mol/L) had no effect on isoproterenol-induced cyclic adenosine monophosphate production. CONCLUSION Cocaine is a beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist in human myometrium at concentrations as low as 10(-8) mol/L. This acute effect of cocaine may result in increased uterine contractility with adrenergic stimulation, potentially leading to increased uterine activity associated with acute cocaine use.

Abstract
Alterations in transcriptional control may contribute directly to carcinogenesis. Using the differential display technique in prostate cancer cells compared to normal prostate epithelial cells, we identified a down-regulated gene and an up-regulated gene in cancer cells. The down-regulated gene encodes human epithelial tropomyosin (TMe1), a member of the family of actin filament-binding proteins. The up-regulated gene encodes cytochrome c oxidase subunit VIc (COSVIc), a protein of the respiration chain in the mitochondrial inner membrane. The differential display pattern was confirmed by Northern hybridization in both prostate tissue and cell lines. In situ hybridization of malignant prostate epithelial tissue using a digoxigenin-labeled antisense riboprobe detected strong staining for mRNA of COSVIc, as opposed to very weak staining in normal prostate epithelium. The expression pattern of COSVIc may be a useful marker for studying the alteration of energy metabolism in cancer cells and for the diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the efficacy of transillumination for locating abdominal wall vessels prior to trocar placement during laparoscopy. DESIGN Prospective clinical descriptive study. SETTING Normal human volunteers in an academic research environment. PATIENTS Forty-seven white and 21 black women of various weights undergoing laparoscopy for clinical indications unrelated to this study. INTERVENTIONS None. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The location and number of abdominal wall vessels visible by transillumination were recorded for each patient. RESULTS In women of normal weight, a single vessel could be seen approximately 5 cm from the midline in > 90% of the patients, and second vessel approximately 8 cm from the midline could also be seen in 51%. The more medial vessels did not correlate with the course of the inferior epigastric vessels seen laparoscopically. The ability to see vessels was decreased significantly by the patients' weight but not by skin color. CONCLUSIONS Superficial abdominal wall vessels may be located by transillumination in the majority of women of normal weight regardless of skin color, but is of less value in overweight and obese women. However, the deep (inferior) epigastric vessels cannot be effectively located by transillumination, and thus other techniques should be used to minimize the risk of injury to these vessels.

Abstract
Cocaine abuse is associated with premature labor. Although cocaine is known to competitively inhibit beta-adrenergic receptor binding, cocaine's effect on receptor downregulation is uncertain. This study was designed to determine the in vitro effect of cocaine on downregulation of beta-adrenergic receptors in pregnant myometrium. Pregnant sheep myometrium was incubated with either cocaine, isoproterenol, or a cocaine metabolite, benzoylecgonine. Membrane fractions were assayed for beta-adrenergic receptors using (125I)-cyanopindolol and the beta 2-adrenergic antagonist ICI 118,551. We found that cocaine (10(-6) to 10(-4) mol/L), but not benzoylecgonine, downregulated both beta 1- and beta 2-adrenergic receptors, but did not further augment receptor downregulation by isoproterenol. The 46% decrease in beta-adrenergic receptors seen after exposure to cocaine was similar to the 53% decrease seen after isoproterenol. We hypothesize downregulation of beta-adrenergic receptors by cocaine may play a role in the association of cocaine abuse with premature labor.
