Culture-negative versus culture-positive in pyogenic spondylitis and analysis of risk factors for relapse

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to compare and analyze the clinical features, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of culture-negative and culture-positive primary pyogenic spondylitis.

METHODS

In a retrospective analysis, 202 cases of adult primary pyogenic spondylitis with complete clinical data in our hospital from January 2013 to January 2020 were divided into two groups according to bacterial culture results: culture negative (n = 126) and culture positive (n = 76). We compare the clinical characteristics, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of patients with different culture results.

RESULTS

The culture positive rate was 37.62% (76/202). There were no significant differences in age, gender, affected segment, spinal abscess, diabetes mellitus, course of disease, surgery, recurrence, and follow-up time between the two groups (p>.05). There were statistically significant differences in hospital admission erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), admission C-reactive protein (CRP), admission white blood cell (WBC) count, discharge ESR, discharge CRP, ESR decline rate, CRP (p<.05). There were statistically significant differences in the rate of decline, hospitalization days, and body temperature ≥38 °C (p<.05). Higher CRP levels on admission, antibiotic treatment time <6 weeks, and body temperature ≥ 38 °C are independent risk factors for infection recurrence.

CONCLUSIONS

The culture-negative group's admission WBC, admission ESR, admission CRP, discharge ESR, discharge CRP, ESR decline rate, CRP decline rate, and hospital stay were lower than the culture positive group, the difference was statistically significant (p<.05). The independent risk factors for infection recurrence are higher CRP levels in hospital admission, antibiotic treatment time <6 weeks, and body temperature ≥ 38 °C.

Associations between abdominal obesity indices with hypertension in type 2 diabetes mellitus: Chinese visceral adiposity index

PURPOSE

This research was performed to evaluate the relationship between hypertension (HTN) and abdominal obesity index in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

METHODS

Totally 1657 participants with T2DM (mean age 54 ± 12 years; 38.02% female) were enrolled. They were divided into the groups of HTN (n = 775) and non-HTN (n = 882). Anthropometric and biochemical indicators were measured and collected. A bioelectrical impedance analyzer was used to measure visceral and subcutaneous fat areas.

RESULTS

Compared with the HTN group, the non-HTN group had a lower level of Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) (p < 0.001). Meanwhile, among tertiles of CVAI, as CVAI increased, the proportion of patients with HTN increased, which was 33.51%, 44.30%, and 62.50%, respectively. CVAI was shown to have a significant positive correlation with HTN. (r = 0.258, p < 0.001). CVAI was independently related to an elevated risk of HTN by binary logistic regression analyses, and the OR was (95% CI) 1.013 (1.010-1.016, p < 0.001) after adjustment. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of CVAI predicted HTN in T2DM patients was greater than those of other abdominal obesity indices (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

We found that CVAI was highly positively correlated with HTN in T2DM. Compared with other indices of abdominal obesity, such as WC, BMI, WHR, VAI, and LAP, the CVAI showed superior discriminative ability in T2DM complicated with HTN. Therefore, more attention should be paid to CVAI in T2DM.

Replantation of lamina spinous process ligament complex and miniature titanium plate shaping internal fixation in the treatment of tumors in the spinal canal

OBJECTIVE

Purpose This study aims to explore the clinical efficacy of laminospinous process ligament complex reimplantation combined with mini-titanium plate fixation in the treatment of thoracolumbar intraspinal tumors.

METHODS

A retrospective analysis was performed on 43 cases of intraspinal tumors treated with thoracolumbar intraspinal tumor resection from August 2018 to March 2021, and 27 cases underwent laminospinous process ligament complex reimplantation combined with micro titanium plate shaping. Fixation (laminar replantation group), and 16 patients underwent laminectomy combined with pedicle screw internal fixation (laminectomy group). The operation time, blood loss, drainage tube removal time, cerebrospinal fluid leakage, spinal instability, and the incidence of secondary spinal stenosis were compared between the two groups. The pain VAS score, ODI score, and modified Macnab at the last follow-up were compared between the two groups. And the laminar fusion rate of the laminoplasty group was measured.

RESULTS

Both groups successfully completed the surgery and obtained complete follow-up. The incidence of cerebrospinal fluid leakage and secondary spinal canal stenosis in the laminectomy group was lower than that in the laminectomy group, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of spinal instability between the two groups (P > 0.05). The operation time and intraoperative blood loss in the laminectomy group were less than those in the laminectomy group, and the drainage tube removal time was earlier than that in the laminectomy group. The difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). At the final follow-up, there was no statistically significant difference in the pain VAS score, ODI score, and modified Macnab between the two groups (P > 0.05), but they were all significantly improved compared with preoperative ones. Fusion evaluation was conducted on the laminoplasty group. Two years after surgery, the fusion rate was 97.56% (40/41).

CONCLUSIONS

The application of laminospinous process ligament complex reimplantation combined with mini titanium plate fixation during thoracolumbar intraspinal tumor resection can effectively reconstruct the spinal canal and posterior column structure, reduce the incidence of cerebrospinal fluid leakage and secondary spinal stenosis. The laminar fusion rate is high.

One-hole split endoscopy technique versus unilateral biportal endoscopy technique for L5-S1 lumbar disk herniation: analysis of clinical and radiologic outcomes

BACKGROUND

Lumbar disk herniation (LDH) is one of the most common diseases of the spine, especially occurring in L4-5 and L5-S1 intervertebral disks, and surgery is a choice when conservative treatment is ineffective. The purpose of this study is to investigate the clinical efficacy and radiologic outcomes of one-hole split endoscopy (OSE) technique versus unilateral biportal endoscopy (UBE) technique in the treatment of L5-S1 lumbar disk herniation (LDH).

METHODS

A total of 133 patients of a single center surgically treated for L5-S1 LDH between 2019 and 2021 were retrospectively included in this study, of which 70 were treated by UBE technique and the rest were treated by OSE technique. Hospitalization time, operative time, intraoperative blood loss, fluoroscopy times, incision length and related complications were recorded. Bone resection area (BRA), articular process resection rate, range of motion (ROM), sagittal translation (ST), disk height (DH), Visual Analog Score (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and Macnab criteria were used to evaluated the clinical efficacy.

RESULTS

There was no statistically significant difference in hospitalization time or fluoroscopy times between the two groups. The operation time was shorter in the UBE group than that in the OSE group; however, the incision length was longer. Intraoperative blood loss and BRA were larger in the UBE group than in the OSE group. There was no significant difference in ROM, ST, DH, or postoperative facet resection rate between the two groups. There was no significant difference in ROM, ST, or postoperative facet resection rate compared with preoperative indicators in each group, but there was a significant difference in DH among distinct groups. At any time point, the lower back and leg VAS and ODI in each group were significantly improved compared to those before the operation, with no significant difference between the two groups. There was one case of dural tear in the UBE group. One case of transient hypoesthesia occurred in each of the two groups. The excellent-good rates of the UBE group and the OSE group were 88.6% and 90.5%, respectively.

CONCLUSION

The OSE technique is an effective minimally invasive surgical option as well as the UBE technique in the treatment of L5-S1 LDH.

One-hole split endoscope technique for migrated lumbar disc herniation: a single-centre, retrospective study of a novel technique

BACKGROUND

Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) is one of the most common diseases of the spine, and migrated LDH is a more serious type, associated with nerve root function injury or abnormality. Regarding the increasing surgery adoption of treating migrated LDH, we aimed to investigate the clinical efficacy and safety of discectomy with a novel technique-one-hole split endoscope (OSE) technique.

METHODS

This was a retrospective analysis of migrated LDH treated between December 2020 and September 2021. Hospitalization time, operative duration, intraoperative blood loss, number of fluoroscopy exposures, incision length, postoperative facet preservation rate, number of excellent-good cases, lower back and leg visual analogue score (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and surgical complications were compared between high-grade migration group (82 cases) and low-grade migration group (148 cases). The Macnab criteria was used to evaluate the clinical outcome. The Shapiro‒Wilk test was used to test measurement data, and the χ² test was used to test counting data.

RESULTS

There was no significant difference in hospitalization time, operative duration, intraoperative blood loss, number of fluoroscopy exposures, incision length or postoperative facet preservation rate between the two groups by independent sample t test or nonparametric test. At any time point, the lower back and leg VAS and ODI of the two groups were significantly improved compared to those before the operation, but there was no significant difference between the two groups at the same time point by two-way repeated measures ANOVA. There were two cases of postoperative nerve root stimulation symptoms in the high-grade migration group and three cases in the low-grade migration group. There was one patient reoperated in the high-grade migration group. There was no significant difference in number of excellent-good cases between the two groups. The overall excellent-good rate was 89.6%.

CONCLUSION

The OSE technique has the advantages of less trauma, faster recovery, complete removal of the nucleus pulposus and a satisfactory early clinical efficacy in the treatment of migrated LDH.

Scientific evidence of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses

Background

It remains controversial whether sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2is) are effective in treating heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).

Purpose

The objective of this umbrella review is to provide a summary of the available evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of SGLT-2is for the treatment of HFpEF.

Methods

We extracted pertinent systematic reviews and meta-analyses (SRs/MAs) from PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library that were published between the inception of the database and December 31, 2022. Two independent investigators assessed the methodological quality, risk of bias, report quality, and evidence quality of the included SRs/MAs in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We further evaluated the overlap of the included RCTs by calculating the corrected covered area (CCA) and assessed the reliability of the effect size by performing excess significance tests. Additionally, the effect sizes of the outcomes were repooled to obtain objective and updated conclusions. Egger's test and sensitivity analysis were used to clarify the stability and reliability of the updated conclusion.

Results

This umbrella review included 15 SRs/MAs, and their methodological quality, risk of bias, report quality, and evidence quality were unsatisfactory. The total CCA for 15 SRs/MAs was 23.53%, indicating a very high level of overlap. The excess significance tests did not reveal any significant results. Our updated MA demonstrated that the incidence of the composite of hospitalization for heart failure (HHF) or cardiovascular death (CVD), first HHF, total HHF, and adverse events as well as the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire Total Symptom Score (KCCQ-TSS) and 6 min-walk distance (6MWD) were all substantially improved in the SGLT-2i intervention group compared to the control group. However, there was limited evidence that SGLT-2is could improve CVD, all-cause death, plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) level, or plasma N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) level. Egger's test and sensitivity analysis proved that the conclusion was stable and reliable.

Conclusions

SGLT-2 is a potential treatment for HFpEF with favourable safety. Given the dubious methodological quality, reporting quality, evidence quality, and high risk of bias for certain included SRs/MAs, this conclusion must be drawn with caution.

Efficacy of Acupuncture in the Treatment of Essential Hypertension: An Overview of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses

Background

Acupuncture is widely used in the clinical treatment of essential hypertension (EH). This overview is aimed at summarizing current systematic reviews of acupuncture for EH and assessing the methodological bias and quality of evidence.

Methods

Two researchers searched and extracted 7 databases for systematic reviews (SRs)/meta-analyses (MAs) and independently assessed the methodological quality, risk of bias, reporting quality, and quality of evidence of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) included in the SRs/MAs. Tools used included the measurement tool to assess systematic reviews 2 (AMSTAR-2), the risk of bias in systematic (ROBIS) scale, the checklist of preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA), and the grading of recommendations assessment, development, and evaluation (GRADE) system.

Results

This overview included 14 SRs/MAs that use quantitative calculations to comprehensively assess the various effects of acupuncture in essential hypertension interventions. The methodological quality, reporting quality, risk of bias, and quality of evidence for outcome measures of SRs/MAs were all unsatisfactory. According to the results of the AMSTAR-2 assessment, all SRs/MAs were of low or very low quality. According to the results of the ROBIS evaluation, a few SRs/MAs were assessed as low risk of bias. According to the results of the PRISMA checklist assessment, SRs/MAs that were not fully reported on the checklist accounted for the majority. According to the GRADE system, 86 outcomes were assessed under different interventions in SRs/MAs, and 2 were rated as moderate-quality evidence, 23 as low-quality evidence, and 61 as very low-quality evidence. Limitations of the included SRs/MAs included the lack of necessary items, such as not being registered in the protocol, not providing a list of excluded studies, and not analyzing and addressing the risk of bias.

Conclusion

Currently, acupuncture may be an effective and safe treatment for EH, but the quality of evidence is low, and caution should be exercised when applying this evidence in clinical practice.

Identification of a linear epitope in the capsid protein of goose astrovirus with monoclonal antibody

Goose astrovirus (GoAstV) is a novel avastrovirus that typically causes gosling gout and results in 2 to 20% mortality. GoAstV capsid protein is the sole structural protein, which is responsible for viral attachment, assembly, maturation as well as eliciting host antibodies. However, the epitopes within capsid protein have not been well studied. In this study, a monoclonal antibody, named 1D7, was generated against GoAstV capsid protein by hybridoma technology. Western blot results showed that this MAb could react with recombinant capsid protein expressed in E. coli. Also, it recognized the precursor of capsid protein, VP90 and VP70, in GoAstV-infected cells. Besides, excellent specificity of MAb 1D7 was further demonstrated in indirect immunofluorescence assay and immunohistochemical analysis. Epitope mapping results revealed that MAb 1D7 recognized the epitope 33QKVY 36 within Cap protein. Sequence alignment indicated that 33QKVY 36 is a conserved epitope among the isolates of goose astrovirus type 2 (GoAstV-2), suggesting the potential for its use in GoAstV-2 specific diagnostic assay. These findings may provide some insight into a function of the GoAstV capsid protein and further contribute to the development of diagnostic methods for GoAstV infection.

Genetic characterization and clinical characteristics of bovine viral diarrhea viruses in cattle herds of Heilongjiang province, China

BACKGROUND

Heilongjiang province is the main cattle-producing area in China, and molecular epidemiological studies of bovine viral diarrhea viruses (BVDV) in cattle have not been performed in the province.

AIMS

The objective of this research was to determine the genetic and clinical characteristics of BVDV in cattle.

METHODS

Fifty-three BVDV-positive clinical samples were collected from 22 cattle farms in Heilongjiang, and the 5´-untranslated region (5´-UTR) was used to carry out a phylogenetic analysis of the viruses.

RESULTS

The similarity of the 5´-UTR sequences among these BVDVs was 84.2%-100%, and the phylogenetic analysis showed that all viruses belong to the BVDV-1 species, which is classified into five subtypes: BVDV-1b (47.17%, n=25), 1c (15.09%, n=8), 1d (16.98%, n=9), 1 m (3.77%, n=2), and 1o (16.98%, n=9). The statistical results showed that the BVDV-1b subtype had a positive correlation with gastrointestinal disease (P<0.05; 95% CI: 1.19 to 3.34). There were up to three or four BVDV-1 subtypes in some dairy cattle farms, but farms with a single subtype were prevalent (5/10).

CONCLUSION

BVDV-1b is predominant in cattle herds of Heilongjiang province, China, and shows a positive correlation with gastrointestinal disease. BVDV-1o was found for the first time in Chinese cattle, which increased the complex distribution of BVDV-1 subtypes in cattle herds of China.

Association between hyperuricaemia and clinical pathological characteristics of patients with IgA nephropathy

OBJECTIVE

To study the association of hyperuricaemia with clinical and pathological characteristics of patients with IgA nephropathy, and to clarify adverse effects of hyperuricaemia on the onset and progression of IgA nephropathy.

METHODS

A total of 244 patients with IgA nephropathy enrolled in Jiangjin Center Hospital were divided into a group with normal serum uric acid level and a group with elevated level. Age, gender, course of disease, blood pressure, liver function, renal function, blood lipid levels, blood glucose level, 24-hour urine protein level and pathological grades were recorded. The correlations of serum uric acid level with clinical indices and pathological grades were analyzed.

RESULTS

The incidence rate of IgA nephropathy complicated with hyperuricaemia was 25.4%. The two groups had significantly different course of disease, body mass index (BMI), and levels of urea nitrogen, creatinine, triglyceride and urine protein (p<0.05). The group with elevated serum uric acid level had higher Lee's grade, tubulointerstitial lesion grade and renal arteriolar lesion grade. Patients with IgA nephropathy were prone to hyperuricaemia, being closely correlated with BMI, course of disease, blood pressure, triglyceride level and renal function. High pathological grades were important indices for poor prognosis.

CONCLUSIONS

The serum uric acid levels of patients with IgA nephropathy should be monitored to effectively control hyperuricaemia and to avoid its complications.

Inactive and inefficient: Warming and drought effect on microbial carbon processing in alpine grassland at depth

Subsoils contain >50% of soil organic carbon (SOC) globally yet remain under-investigated in terms of their response to climate changes. Recent evidence suggests that warmer, drier conditions in alpine grasslands induce divergent responses in SOC decomposition and carbon accrual in top- versus subsoils. However, longer term effects on microbial activity (i.e., catabolic respiration vs. anabolic growth) and belowground carbon cycling are not well understood. Here we utilized a field manipulation experiment on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and conducted a 110-day soil incubation with and without ¹³ C-labeled grass litter to assess microbes' role as both SOC "decomposers" and "contributors" in the top- (0-10 cm) versus subsoils (30-40 cm) after 5 years of warming and drought treatments. Microbial mineralization of both SOC and added litter was examined in tandem with potential extracellular enzyme activities, while microbial biomass synthesis and necromass accumulation were analyzed using phospholipid fatty acids and amino sugars coupled with ¹³ C analysis, respectively. We found that warming and, to a lesser extent, drought decreased the ratio of inorganic nitrogen (N) to water-extractable organic carbon in the subsoil, intensifying N limitation at depth. Both SOC and litter mineralization were reduced in the subsoil, which may also be related to N limitation, as evidenced by lower hydrolase activity (especially leucine aminopeptidase) and reduced microbial efficiency (lower biomass synthesis and necromass accumulation relative to respiration). However, none of these effects were observed in the topsoil, suggesting that soil microbes became inactive and inefficient in subsoil but not topsoil environments. Given increasing belowground productivity in this alpine grassland under warming, both elevated root deposits and diminished microbial activity may contribute to new carbon accrual in the subsoil. However, the sustainability of plant growth and persistence of subsoil SOC pools deserve further investigation in the long term, given the aggravated N limitation at depth.

Efficacy and safety of Shenfuqiangxin pills in complementary treatment of chronic heart failure: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

As the last link in the chain of cardiovascular events, chronic heart failure (CHF) has high morbidity, high mortality, and poor prognosis. It is one of the main causes of death and disability worldwide. Shenfuqiangxin Pills (SFQX) is widely used as a Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) prescription for CHF, but there is still a lack of strict evidence-based medical evidence. Therefore, we make a protocol for evaluating the efficacy and safety of SFQX for CHF.

METHODS

According to the search strategy, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of SFQX for CHF will be retrieved from 8 databases without limitation of publication date or language. First of all, the literature was screened according to the eligibility criteria, and use the Cochrane Collaboration's tool to assess the quality of the included literature. Then, using software for traditional meta-analysis. Finally, using GRADE method to assess the strength of recommendations.

RESULTS

This study will evaluate the efficacy and safety of SFQX for CHF, thereby providing more evidence support for clinical decision-making in CHF.

CONCLUSION

Our research will provide more references for the clinical medication of patients with CHF.

Efficacy and safety of Qishen Yiqi dripping pills as a complementary treatment for Heart Failure: A protocol of updated systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Heart failure (HF) has become a serious global public health issue due to its high incidence, high mortality and extremely low quality of life. According to several clinical trials, Qishen Yiqi Dripping pills (QSYQ) combined with routine western medicine treatment can further enhance the curative effect of HF patients. However, most of the trials are small in sample size and poor in quality, which can only provide limited evidence-based medicine. The existing systematic reviews of efficacy and safety has provided evidence for the clinical application of QSYQ to a certain extent, but there are still 3 major defects. Here, we will perform a systematic review and meta-analysis that include the randomized clinical trial (RCT) of CACT-IHF, apply meta-regression and subgroup analysis to cope with multiple confounding factors, and add the clinical efficacy standards of TCM, all-cause death and readmission rates as reliable efficacy evaluation indicators. The purpose of this study was to rigorously evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of QSYQ in the complementary treatment of HF with a well-designed systematic review and meta-analysis.

METHODS

Following the strict search strategy, 9 databases will be searched to ensure a comprehensive search. We search the database from the establishment until November 30, 2020. This study will include RCTs of QSYQ in HF patients' complementary treatment. Two searchers will independently draft and carry out the search strategy, and the third member will further complete it. Two members independently screen literature, extract data and cross-check, and solve different opinions through discussion or negotiation with the third member. The risk bias will be evaluated based on Cochrane tool of risk of bias. Meta-regression and subgroup analysis are used to check and deal with the heterogeneity. The data analysis will be conducted by the statistical software Stata 16.0.

RESULTS

The results of this research will be delivered in a peer-reviewed journal.

CONCLUSION

This study expects to provide credible and scientific evidence for the efficacy and safety of QSYQ in HF's complementary treatment, and at the same time provide a convenient and effective choice for decision-makers and patients.

Studies on 11 Cases of Spinal Epidural Abscess and Literature Review

Objective

In the present study, we aimed to describe the clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of spinal epidural abscess (SEA).

Methods

The complete clinical data of 11 SEA patients who were treated in our hospital system from January 2015 to June 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Moreover, the clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of 642 SEA cases collected from the foreign literature from 2010 to 2019 were also investigated.

Results

Among our 11 SEA patients, nine cases had purulent inflammation, two cases had tuberculosis, two cases had infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus, one case had infection caused by Streptococcus constellatus, one case had infection caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae, five cases showed negative bacterial culture, and two cases had Mycobacterium tuberculosis. All 11 cases showed focal spinal pain, eight cases exhibited neurological deficits, and six cases experienced fever. Nine of the 11 cases involved the lumbosacral spine, one case involved the thoracic spine, and one case involved the cervical spine. Eight patients had a longer course of disease (>2 weeks), all 11 patients had vertebral osteomyelitis, and nine patients had intervertebral discitis. One patient had motor dysfunction of arms and legs, one patient had lower limb motor dysfunction, one patient had limb numbness, one patient experienced relapse after the conservative treatment, and one patient experienced relapse after the surgical treatment. The follow-up time was 15–24 months.

Conclusion

The classic diagnosis of triads (focal spine pain, neurological deficit, and fever) was less specific for SEA. MRI examination, blood culture, tissue culture, and biopsy could be used for the diagnosis for SEA. Suppuritis was a common cause of SEA. Early detection, early diagnosis and early treatment, as well as the selection of the most suitable treatment regimen based on comprehensive evaluation, played crucial roles in a better prognosis of SEA. There was no statistically significant difference in terms of the general condition, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis between the patients with negative and positive culture results (P>0.05). For SEA patient with negative culture, antibiotic treatment should be used empirically.

Effect and safety of oral Chinese patent medicine for heart failure: A protocol for systematic review and network meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Heart failure (HF) is the terminal stage of various common cardiovascular diseases with quite a frequent readmission and a high mortality rate, and brings heavy financial burdens to families and society. Oral Chinese patent medicine (CPM) has been widely applied in the treatment of HF in China because of its simplicity, cheapness, convenience, and high efficiency. However, due to the large number and broad clinical selectivity of oral CPMs, there is a lack of uniformity and clinical application standardization. To choose more effective and safe medicine among so many oral CPMs is particularly essential for further improving the therapeutic effect. In this study, the efficacy and safety of different oral CPMs will be compared by a network meta-analysis (NMA), and the best CPM will be selected for the treatment of HF.

METHODS

According to the search strategy, 4 English and 4 Chinese databases will be searched from the construction of the library to July 31, 2020. The NMA will include clinical randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of different oral CPMs in HF treatment. The methodological quality is assessed according to the bias risk assessment tool of Cochrane. The Bayesian NMA is performed by Aggregate Data Drug Information System (ADDIS), and the results are visualized using Stata 15.0 software. The GRADE approach is used to assess the quality of evidence and recommendation intensity.

RESULTS

The NMA will identify the best oral CPM in the complementary treatment of HF. A peer-reviewed journal will publish the results of the study.

CONCLUSION

This study can provide reliable evidence for the efficacy and safety of oral CPMs in the treatment of HF, and help decision-makers and patients to select more effective and safer oral CPM.

Aspergillus spondylitis: case series and literature review

BACKGROUND

Spinal fungal infections, especially spinal Aspergillus infections, are rare in the clinic. Here, we introduce the clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and prognoses of 6 cases of Aspergillus spondylitis.

METHODS

We retrospectively analysed the complete clinical data of patients with Aspergillus spondylitis treated in our hospital from January 2013 to January 2020.

RESULTS

Aspergillus fumigatus was isolated in 4 cases, and Aspergillus spp. and Aspergillus niger were isolated in 1 case each. All six patients reported varying degrees of focal spinal pain; one patient reported radiating pain, one patient experienced bowel dysfunction and numbness in both lower limbs, and three patients had fever symptoms. One case involved the thoracic spine, one case involved the thoracolumbar junction, and 4 cases involved the lumbar spine. Three patients were already in an immunosuppressed state, and three patients entered an immunosuppressed state after spinal surgery. All six patients were successfully cured, and five required surgery. Of the 5 patients who underwent surgical treatment, 2 had spinal cord compression symptoms, and 3 had spinal instability. At the end of follow-up, 1 patient reported left back pain and 1 patient reported left limb numbness.

CONCLUSION

The clinical manifestations of Aspergillus spondylitis are non-specific, and the diagnosis depends on typical imaging findings and microbiological and histopathological examination results. When there is no spinal instability, spinal nerve compression symptoms, or progressive deterioration, antifungal therapy alone may be considered. If spinal instability, spinal nerve compression, or epidural abscess formation is present, surgery combined with antifungal therapy is recommended.

ZNF424 Induces Apoptosis and Inhibits Proliferation in Lung Carcinoma Cells

Background:

Previously, we showed that the Zinc finger-containing transcription factor ZNF424 inhibits p21 transcription, which has been widely associated with various cancers. However, because the roles of ZNF424 in tumorigenesis have not been characterized, we correlated ZNF424 expression with tumorigenesis in lung cancer.

Results:

The present immunohistochemical analyses show significantly lower ZNF424 expression levels in 43 of 60 lung cancer tissues compared with adjacent tissues. Moreover, flow cytometry assays indicated that overexpression of ZNF424 induces apoptosis in A549 human lung carcinoma cells, and overexpression of ZNF424 significantly increases numbers of G1 phase cells and decreases numbers of S phase cells, suggesting that ZNF424 inhibits proliferation. Western Blot analyses show that overexpression of ZNF424 decreases protein expression levels of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling proteins P-P38 and P-ERK in A549 cells.

Conclusion:

These are the first data to associate ZNF424 with tumorigenesis and demonstrate an inhibitory role in lung cancer, indicating the potential of ZNF424 expression as a diagnostic marker of lung tumorigenesis.

Role of Zebrafish fhl1A in Satellite Cell and Skeletal Muscle Development

Background:

Four-and-a-half LIM domains protein 1 (FHL1) mutations are associated with human myopathies. However, the function of this protein in skeletal development remains unclear.

Methods:

Whole-mount in situ hybridization and embryo immunostaining were performed.

Results:

Zebrafish Fhl1A is the homologue of human FHL1. We showed that fhl1A knockdown causes defective skeletal muscle development, while injection with fhl1A mRNA largely recovered the muscle development in these fhl1A morphants. We also demonstrated that fhl1A knockdown decreases the number of satellite cells. This decrease in satellite cells and the emergence of skeletal muscle abnormalities were associated with alterations in the gene expression of myoD, pax7, mef2ca and skMLCK. We also demonstrated that fhl1A expression and retinoic acid (RA) signalling caused similar skeletal muscle development phenotypes. Moreover, when treated with exogenous RA, endogenous fhl1A expression in skeletal muscles was robust. When treated with DEAB, an RA signalling inhibitor which inhibits the activity of retinaldehyde dehydrogenase, fhl1A was downregulated.

Conclusion:

fhl1A functions as an activator in regulating the number of satellite cells and in skeletal muscle development. The role of fhl1A in skeletal myogenesis is regulated by RA signaling.

Tonifying Qi and activating blood circulation in terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine: their effects in patients with myocardial infarction

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the effects of tonifying Qi and activating blood circulation (SQABC), a method in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), on end-point events in patients with myocardial infarction (MI) in this retrospective cohort study.

METHODS

Clinical data were obtained from the medical records of patients with acute MI (AMI), both during hospitalization and follow-up, and included general demographic information (age, gender, and contact information), TCM regimens used, and end-point events.

RESULTS

A total of 1596 patients with AMI were enrolled to this study, but data of only 1210 cases are accessible till follow-up. We classified the patients based on the exposure levels of SQABC. When comparing the results between all exposure and non-exposure groups, significant differences were identified, both during hospitalization and follow-ups. During hospitalization, cardiac death (4.40% vs 21.55%, P < 0.05) and cardiac shock (3.04% vs 11.62%, P < 0.05) were significantly lower in the exposure group than the non-exposure group. Similarly, during the follow-up, cardiac death (12.04% vs 20.49%, P < 0.05), acute heart failure (7.27% vs 11.81%, P < 0.05), composite endpoint of reinfarction and stroke (9.11% vs 15.28%, P < 0.05), and rehospitalization due to angina (25.49% vs 34.38%, P < 0.05) were significantly lower in the exposure group than the non-exposure group.

CONCLUSION

Our findings suggest that SQABC can significantly benefits the subjects in the management of high-risk AMI in them.

Divergent accumulation of microbial necromass and plant lignin components in grassland soils

The means through which microbes and plants contribute to soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation remain elusive due to challenges in disentangling the complex components of SOC. Here we use amino sugars and lignin phenols as tracers for microbial necromass and plant lignin components, respectively, and investigate their distribution in the surface soils across Mongolian grasslands in comparison with published data for other grassland soils of the world. While lignin phenols decrease, amino sugars increase with SOC contents in all examined grassland soils, providing continental-scale evidence for the key role of microbial necromass in SOC accumulation. Moreover, in contrast to clay’s control on amino sugar accumulation in fine-textured soils, aridity plays a central role in amino sugar accrual and lignin decomposition in the coarse-textured Mongolian soils. Hence, aridity shifts may have differential impacts on microbial-mediated SOC accumulation in grassland soils of varied textures.

It remains unclear how microbes and plants contribute to soil organic carbon (SOC) accrual. Here, using biomarkers, the authors show that microbial necromass and plant-derived lignin components have divergent accumulation mechanisms and that microbial necromass plays a key role in SOC accumulation.

Efficacy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in patients with acute myocardial infarction suffering from diabetes mellitus

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the ""real world"" effectiveness of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in patients with acute myocardial infarction suffering from diabetes mellitus (AMI+DM patients).

METHODS

This was a retrospective cohort study. During hospitalization, the ""exposure group"" was defined as patients who had a TCM injection for ≥ 7 d. During follow-up, the definition of the exposure group was application of a Chinese patent medicine or decoction of Chinese medicine for ≥ 28 d. General information (age, sex, contact details), TCM use and endpoint events of AMI+DM patients during hospitalization and follow-up were collected. The correlation between TCM and the end-point events of AMI + DM patients was analyzed using a multiple logistic regression method.

RESULTS

A total of 479 AMI + DM patients were enrolled and 345 cases were followed up. During hospitalization, TCM, age, hypertension and use of an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) or angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) were associated with cardiac death. During follow-up, TCM was associated with cardiac death. TCM was a relevant factor for a composite endpoint of re-infarction and stroke. TCM, anti-thrombotic therapy and lipid-lowering therapy were related to acute heart failure. TCM, anti-thrombotic therapy, anti-MI therapy and ACEI/ARB use exhibited a strong correlation with re-hospitalization due to cardiovascular disease.

CONCLUSION

TCM reduced the prevalence of cardiac death during hospitalization, and cardiac death, a composite endpoint of re-infarction and stroke, acute heart failure and re-hospitalization due to cardiovascular disease during follow-up.

Endothelial Cells Exposed to Fluid Shear Stress Support Diffusion Based Maturation of Adult Neural Progenitor Cells

Introduction

The neural stem cell (NSC) niche is a highly complex cellular and biochemical milieu supporting proliferating NSCs and neural progenitor cells (NPCs) with close apposition to the vasculature, primarily comprised of endothelial cells (ECs). Current in vitro models of the niche incorporate EC-derived factors, but do not reflect the physiologically relevant hemodynamic state of the ECs or the spatial resolution observed between cells within the niche.

Methods

In this work, we developed a novel in vitro model of the niche that (1) incorporates ECs cultured with fluid shear stress and (2) fosters paracrine cytokine gradients between ECs and NSCs in a spatiotemporal configuration mimicking the cytoarchitecture of the subventricular niche. A modified cone and plate viscometer was used to generate a shear stress of 10 dynes cm^-2 for ECs cultured on a membrane, while statically cultured NPCs are 10 or 1000 μm below the ECs.

Results

NPCs cultured within 10 μm of dynamic ECs exhibit increased PSA-NCAM⁺ and OLIG2⁺ cells compared to progenitors in all other culture regimes and the hemodynamic EC phenotype results in distinct progeny phenotypes. This co-culture regime yields greater release of pro-neurogenic factors, suggesting a potential mechanism for the observed progenitor maturation.

Conclusions

Based on these results, models incorporating ECs exposed to shear stress allow for paracrine signaling gradients and regulate NPC lineage progression with appropriate niche spatial resolution occurring at 10 μm. This model could be used to evaluate cellular or pharmacological interactions within the healthy, diseased, or aged brain.

Bone marrow sFRP5 level is negatively associated with bone formation markers

Secreted frizzled-related protein 5 (sFRP5) level in bone marrow environment is inversely correlated with bone formation markers, suggesting that it decreases bone mass by inhibiting bone formation. Besides, it functions in a local fashion when regulating bone metabolism. sFRP5 may be a target when developing anti-osteoporotic agents.

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between bone marrow sFRP5 level and bone turnover state.

METHODS

Eighty-three total knee arthroplasty patients were enrolled in this study. Data were collected prospectively and reviewed retrospectively. Lumbar spine and femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD), marrow adipose tissue (MAT) sFRP5 messenger RNA (mRNA) expression level, sFRP5 concentrations in marrow fluid and serum, concentrations of bone formation and resorption markers were measured for each participant.

RESULTS

Marrow fluid sFRP5 concentration was positively correlated with both MAT sFRP5 expression (p = 0.040) and serum sFRP5 concentration (p = 0.043). Significantly positive correlation existed between MAT sFRP5 expression level and BMD (p < 0.05). Marrow fluid sFRP5 concentration had a moderate but not significant positive association with BMD. MAT sFRP5 was negatively related to serum bone formation markers including N-terminal propeptide of type 1 procollagen (P1NP) (p = 0.011), osteocalcin (OC), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). Marrow fluid and serum sFRP5 concentrations also had mild negative correlations with bone formation markers but reached no significance. There was no significant correlation between bone resorption marker β-crosslaps (β-CTX) and sFRP5. The mRNA expression level of MAT sFRP5 was positively related with those of MAT leptin, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ), and adiponectin, and its correlation with leptin was statistically significant (p = 0.026).

CONCLUSIONS

Bone marrow sFRP5 level is closely correlated with BMD and bone formation markers. sFRP5 may be a potential negative regulator of bone mass by inhibiting bone formation. It may exert its effects on bone metabolism in a paracrine, rather than endocrine manner.

Contrast agent distribution in microvascular damage of infarcted pig myocardium

Purpose: We determined whether reperfusion damage was sufficient to allow extravasation of a large molecular weight contrast agent into infarcted pig myocardium.

Material and Methods: Five pig hearts were subjected to in situ occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery (2 h) followed by reperfusion (1 h). The hearts were excised and perfused in the Langendorff mode for ex vivo MR imaging. Polylysine-Gd-DTPA (50,000 Da) and Gd-DTPA (500-700 Da) were injected into the aorta (alternately) and followed by measurements of T1 relaxation and mean transit time (MTT).

Results: In the normal myocardium, MTT of Gd-DTPA (56.8±23.2 s) was significantly ( p=0.02) longer than that of polylysine-Gd-DTPA (29.0±7 s). However, both normal and infarcted myocardium showed similar MTT (29.0±7.0 vs. 28.0±5.0 s, p&gt;0.05) when using polylysine-Gd-DTPA.

Conclusion: The results indicate that the permeability of capillaries to polylysine-Gd-DTPA was not significantly higher in infarcted regions of the myocardium compared to normal tissue. However, infarcted myocardium displayed an increased permeability to the small molecular weight Gd-DTPA. We conclude that microvascular damage may not be sufficient to allow the extravasation of polylysine-Gd-DTPA in infarcted myocardium.

Cardiac Specific Overexpression of hHole Attenuates Isoproterenol-Induced Hypertrophic Remodeling through Inhibition of Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinases (ERKs) Signalling

The human Hole gene (hHole) encodes a six-transmembrane protein with 319- amino acids. Our previous study showed that hHole was strongly expressed in adult heart and may act as a suppressor of extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERKs), overactivation of which contributed to pathological cardiac hypertrophy. In this study, it was observed that Hole expression was up-regulated in murine hypertrophic hearts. In a cardiac specific transgenic mouse model, it was observed that overexpression of hHole specifically in heart attenuated cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis induced by isoproterenol (ISO), with blunted transcriptions of ERK1/2, total ERK1/2 proteins and phosphorylated ERK1/2 (p-ERK1/2) levels. Furthermore, overexpression of hHole in mice by hydrodynamic tail-vein injection with hHole plamids also inhibited cardiac hypertrophy induced by ISO. Our work identified hHole as a novel repressor of cardiac hypertrophy, and provided new insights into the possible target for the prevention or treatment of cardiac diseases.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in urban and suburban rivers of Beijing, China: occurrence, source apportionment and potential ecological risk

This study analyzed 15 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in two rivers with different urbanization levels in the surrounding watershed (urban and suburb) in Beijing, China. Along the rivers, effluent samples from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and wastewater samples from direct discharge outlets were also collected to reveal their possible contribution to the occurrence of PPCPs in these two rivers. Among the 15 PPCPs, 14 compounds were detected with caffeine (maximum 11,900 ng L(-1)) being the dominant compound. The total concentration of the detected PPCPs in direct discharge outlets (median 4706 ng L(-1)) was much higher than that in river waters (2780 ng L(-1)) and WWTP effluents (1971 ng L(-1)). The suburban-influenced Liangshui River had significantly higher PPCP concentrations compared to the urban-influenced Qing River due to more input of untreated wastewater from direct discharge outlets. Source apportionment showed that approximately 55% of the total PPCPs were contributed by untreated wastewater in the suburban-influenced river. Finally, ecological risk assessment has been regarded as a necessary part of general research. According to the environmental risk assessment results, caffeine, trimethoprim and metoprolol were found to be the most critical compounds, due to their high risk quotient values. The results of the present study can provide useful information for future PPCP pollution control and sustainable water management in Beijing, China.

Isolation and characterization of microsatellite loci in Branchiostoma belcheri Gray (Amphioxus)

Branchiostoma belcheri Gray is a second-class, nationally protected protochordate in China. We developed 10 novel polymorphic sites in B. belcheri, which were examined using a population of 30 wild individuals from Xiamen, China. The polymorphism information content ranged between 0.141 and 0.681, and the number of alleles varied from 2 to 5. The expected and observed heterozygosities varied between 0.1528 and 0.6920, and between 0.1429 and 0.5000, respectively. These novel microsatellite markers will facilitate the genetic analysis and protection of wild B. belcheri individuals, and the possible re-stocking of the species in the long-term.

Isolation and characterization of microsatellite markers of sea cucumber Stichopus horrens

Curry fish (Stichopus horrens) is a tropical holothurian species and is widely distributed in the India-West Pacific. In the present study, 9 polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized for S. horrens. These loci were tested in 30 individuals from Hainan Island in China. The number of alleles ranged from 2 to 5. The polymorphism information content ranged from 0.348-0.584. The levels of observed and expected heterozygosities varied from 0.1500-0.8000 and from 0.2014-0.5000, respectively. Most loci were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, except HCS1-27 and HCS2-7, after sequential Bonferroni's correction, and no significant linkage disequilibrium was detected for any pairwise combination of loci. These polymorphic microsatellite loci will be useful for studying population structure and conservation strategy design for S. horrens.

Linking the environmental loads to the fate of PPCPs in Beijing: Considering both the treated and untreated wastewater sources

The environmental loads of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in Beijing were estimated from direct discharge of untreated wastewater and WWTP treated effluent. The annual environmental loads of 15 PPCP components ranged from 16.3 kg (propranolol) to 9.85 tons (caffeine). A fugacity model was developed to successfully estimate the PPCP pollution based on the estimated environmental load. The modeled results approximated the observed PPCP concentrations in Beijing. The untreated wastewater contributed significantly to PPCP pollution in Beijing, ranging from 46% (propranolol) to 99% (caffeine). The total environmental burden of target PPCPs ranged from 0.90 kg (propranolol) to 536 kg (caffeine). Water is the most important media for the fate of PPCPs. Monte Carlo-based concentration distributions of PPCPs are consistent with the observed results. The most important way to reduce the PPCP pollution is to both improve wastewater collection rate and adopt deep treatment technologies.

Development and characterization of new microsatellite markers of Fenneropenaeus penicillatus

Thirteen new polymorphic microsatellite markers in Fenneropenaeus penicillatus were isolated and characterized. The polymorphism of the thirteen microsatellite markers was tested by 30 individuals from Lianjiang, China. It showed that the number of al-leles per locus ranged from 3 to 6 and the Polymorphism Information Content (PIC) was from 0.324 to 0.706. The observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.3217-0.8023 and 0.1977-0.6783, respectively. Only one loci (LJ-19) deviated significantly from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) (P < 0.00385) after Bonferroni correction, while the other twelve markers were in HWE after Bonferroni correction (P > 0.00385). The thirteen polymorphic microsatellite markers could pro-vide more genetic data for further research on cultivation and recovery of F. penicillatus.

Isolation and characterization of polymorphic microsatellite loci in the sea cucumber Holothuria scabra

The sea cucumber Holothuria scabra is an endangered species. In this study, nine new polymorphic microsatellite loci were developed and tested in 30 individuals. The number of alleles ranged from 2 to 5, and the observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.1200 to 0.7391 and from 0.2408 to 0.5983, respectively. No loci significantly deviated from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium af-ter a Bonferroni correction, and no significant linkage disequilibrium was found between pairs of loci. These polymorphic microsatellite loci will be useful in studying the genetic diversity of H. scabra and its conservation.

Screening the first set of polymorphic microsatellite loci in Lunella coronata granulata (Turbinidae)

Lunella coronata granulata, from the family Turbini-dae, is an economically important species. The first set of 10 poly-morphic microsatellite loci was screened from L. coronata granulata, and 30 individuals were used to analyze the degree of polymorphism in these loci. The level of observed and expected heterozygosity was 0.0667-0.7333 and 0.0644-0.6628, respectively. The polymorphism information content varied from 0.305 to 0.559. Eight loci were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) (P > 0.05), while two loci devi-ated significantly from the HWE after Bonferroni's correction (P < 0.005). The isolated microsatellite loci can be utilized in studies of population genetic analysis and they provide important genetic mark-ers for construction of genetic linkage maps and genetic breeding of L. coronata granulata resources.

Development and characterization of microsatellite loci in Megalonibea fusca

Megalonibea fusca is a commercially important large edible fish. In this study, the first set of 10 polymorphic microsatellite loci for M. fusca was developed and characterized. The number of alleles per locus ranged from two to five, with the observed and expected heterozygosities ranging from 0.0667 to 0.7667, and from 0.0644 to 0.5828, respectively. Most of the loci were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (P > 0.05), except for two loci (Mf25 and Mf30) after a Bonferroni's correction (P < 0.005). These informative microsatellite markers will be useful in further studies of the population and conservation genetics of this species.

Isolation and characterization of novel polymorphic microsatellite loci in Atrina vexillum Born (Pinnidae)

The pen shell, Atrina vexillum Born, is an edible shellfish that is widely consumed in the Asia-Pacific region. In this study, 11 polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated from A. vexillum, and 30 wild individuals were used to evaluate the degree of polymorphism of these markers. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 3 to 8. The polymorphism information content varied from 0.199 to 0.831. The observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.1000-0.8667 and 0.1244-0.8356, respectively. Two loci deviated significantly from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) after a Bonferroni correction, while the other nine loci were at HWE. These microsatellite loci will be useful in further studies on population genetic analyses, and will provide important genetic data for the conservation and recovery of A. vexillum.

Isolation of new polymorphic microsatellite markers from the marbled rockfish Sebastiscus marmoratus

The marbled rockfish, Sebastiscus marmoratus, is an important commercially near-shore fish that inhabits the beach rocky bottom from Japan to the South China Sea. Eleven polymorphic microsatellite loci were developed from S. marmoratus and were used to identify polymorphisms in 30 samples from a wild population. The allele locus number ranged from 2 to 7. Polymorphism data content ranged from 0.032 to 0.751. The observed and expected heterozygosity levels were 0.0333-0.9667 and 0.0328-0.7675, respectively. Two loci, Smd1-112 and Smd2-80, deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. These polymorphic microsatellite markers will facilitate further studies of genetic diversity and genetic differentiation of S. marmoratus.

Development and characterization of polymorphic microsatellite loci in the sea cucumber Holothuria leucospilota

Holothuria leucospilota is a tropical holothurian species that is widely distributed in the tropical and sub-tropical India-Western Pacific Region. Eight polymorphic microsatellite loci were developed from H. leucospilota by using the protocol fast isolation by amplified fragment length polymorphism of sequences containing repeats and tested in 30 individuals from Hainan Island in China. The number of alleles was 2-6 and polymorphism information content ranged from 0.371-0.694. The levels of expected and observed heterozygosities varied from 0.3913-0.6701 and from 0.1154-0.7000, respectively. No significant linkage disequilibrium was detected for any pairwise combination of loci. Only loci YZHS1-42 deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. These polymorphic microsatellite loci may be useful for germplasm conservation of H. leucospilota.

Isolation and characterization of novel microsatellite markers for molecular genetic diversity in Siganus fuscescens

The rabbitfish Siganus fuscescens is an economically valuable species that is widely distributed throughout the estuaries, intertidal, and offshore coasts of the Indo-Pacific and eastern Mediterranean. Ten novel microsatellite loci from the genome of S. fuscescens were developed using the fast isolation protocol with amplified fragment length polymorphism of sequences containing repeats. Polymorphisms in these 10 microsatellite markers were determined from 32 wild individuals. The number of alleles per locus and the polymorphism information content ranged from 2 to 5 and from 0.059 to 0.668, respectively. The observed and expected heterozygosities varied from 0.063 to 0.781 and from 0.062 to 0.731, respectively. Although 1 locus (LZY-X7, P < 0.005) showed significant deviation from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, no deviations were detected in the other 9 loci. These microsatellite loci may be useful for further population genetic studies, conservation studies, population structure assessment, and linkage map construction of S. fuscescens.
