Abstract
Urban air quality studies have primarily focused on pollutant dispersion; however, spatial or temporal concentrations collected at discretely distributed grid points (or fixed receptors) do not reflect the actual pollutant exposure of pedestrians. Using large-eddy simulation (LES) with virtual walkers implemented, this study investigates pollutant exposure of walking agents (or moving receptors) in an urban turbulent boundary-layer flow developed over an aligned building array under the influence of different wind directions. The spatial variability of the exposure risks are found to be better captured by the moving receptors than the fixed receptors along the same agent walking tracks. We demonstrate that the actual exposure can differ significantly from results interpreted from data recorded by the fixed receptors (corresponding to Eulerian estimates) and show that large discrepancies occur in avenues near the source, wherein dispersion of the point release has not occurred on larger spatiotemporal scales. In most scenarios, optimal evacuation routes are shown to be ones that deviate as much as possible from the dominant wind direction; however, one needs to decide the priority of moving to further avenues first or immediately adjusting the walking direction. The results should serve as a useful baseline reference for environmental health impact assessment and evacuation route planning against hazardous releases of air pollutants in more complex urban environments.

Abstract
A novel seaweed-hydrolyzing strain designated as Pseudoalteromonas sp. Alg6B was isolated from the surface of brown seaweed (Laminaria japonica). The activity of crude alginate lyase produced by Alg6B was 54.5 U/ml and the main products of hydrolyzing alginate were disaccharide and tetrasaccharide. The hydrolysis rate of seaweed reached up to 97% after combining 3% (v/v) Alg6B and 0.2% (w/v) solid cellulase. In kelp hydrolysate, the contents of nutrients are much more than raw seaweed. Alg6B grows quickly and has the ability of producing alginate oligosaccharides with low molecular weight (MW) (≤2 kDa). Furthermore, this study demonstrates that a combination of microbial alginate lyase and cellulase could almost hydrolyze seaweed completely. This research indicated that Alg6B could provide a feasible pathway to produce alginate oligosaccharides (AOS), and the synergistic effect of alginate lyase and cellulase on seaweed bioconversion can potentially pave the way to the sustainable production of seaweed fertilizer.

Abstract
The flowering process has been reported to play crucial roles in improving the flavor and efficacy of fermented tea. Hippophae rhamnoides leaves containing many beneficial ingredients are a suitable plant source for tea processing. In this study, we isolated a β-glucosidase-producing fungus Eurotium amstelodami BSX001 from the fermented tea and used Hippophae rhamnoides leaves (HRL) as a substrate to explore the detailed process of bioconversion of some important functional factors. The results show that the contents of total phenolic compounds and flavonoids increased significantly after seven days, especially flavonoid aglycones (e.g., quercetin, kaempferol, and isorhamnetin). Such compounds greatly enhance the antioxidative activity of fermented products. Metabolic analysis of the standard compounds (rutin, quercetin-3-glucoside, kaempferol-3-glucoside, quercetin, isorhamnetin-3-glucoside, isorhamnetin, and kaempferol) further confirmed the effective biotransformation by E. amstelodami. Mechanisms of the bioconversion could be involved in deglycosylation, dihydroxylation, and O-methylation. Our findings expand the understanding of tea fermentation process and provide further guidance for the fermented tea industry.

Abstract
Aims The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in femoral trochlear morphology following surgical correction of recurrent patellar dislocation associated with trochlear dysplasia in children. Patients and Methods A total of 23 patients with a mean age of 9.6 years (7 to 11) were included All had bilateral recurrent patellar dislocation associated with femoral trochlear dysplasia. The knee with traumatic dislocation at the time of presentation or that had dislocated most frequently was treated with medial patellar retinacular plasty (Group S). The contralateral knee served as a control and was treated conservatively (Group C). All patients were treated between October 2008 and August 2013. The mean follow-up was 48.7 months (43 to 56). Axial CT scans were undertaken in all patients to assess the trochlear morphological characteristics on a particular axial image which was established at the point with the greatest epicondylar width based on measurements preoperatively and at the final follow-up. Results Preoperatively, there were no statistically significant differences between the trochlear morphology in the two groups (sulcus angle, p 0.852; trochlear groove depth, p 0.885; lateral trochlear inclination, p 0.676; lateral-to-medial facet ratio, p 0.468; lateral condylar height, p 0.899; medial condylar height, p 0.816). Many radiological parameters of trochlear morphology were significantly different between the two groups at the final follow-up, including well-known parameters, such as the mean sulcus angle (Group S, 146.27° (sd 7.18); Group C, 160.61° (sd 9.29); p < 0.001), the mean trochlear groove depth (Group S, 6.25 mm (sd 0.41); Group C, 3.48 mm (sd 0.65); p < 0.001) and the mean lateral trochlear inclination (Group S, 20.99° (sd 3.87); Group C, 12.18° (sd 1.85); p < 0.001). Lesser known parameters such as the ratio of the lateral to medial trochlear length (Group S, 1.46 (sd 0.19); Group C, 2.14 (sd 0.42); p < 0.001), which is a measurement of facet asymmetry, and the lateral and medial condylar height were also significantly different between the two groups (p < 0.001). Conclusion The femoral trochlear morphology can be improved by early (before epiphyseal closure) surgical correction in children with recurrent patellar dislocation associated with femoral trochlear dysplasia. Abstract
The death of several black bears at the black bear breeding base in Yunnan Pingbian Daweishan is a matter of concern. Multiple black bears exhibited decreased appetite or unusual waste, and some were soporific or suffered from vomiting and anhelation. In order to ascertain the cause of death, 16S rDNA gene sequencing and phylogenetic analysis was performed on bacteria isolated from tissue samples obtained from dead bears. The biochemical characteristics of the isolated bacteria were subsequently analyzed using different biochemical test systems. The bacteria can decompose glucose, but it cannot produce gas. The fermentation study of sucrose, lactose, trehalose, glycerol and mannitol yielded positive results; while it was unable to decompose urea or ODC (ornithine decarboxylase). Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) analysis of a ~1500-bp DNA product amplified from the 16S rDNA of the bacterial isolate revealed that Enterococcus faecium from black bears is highly similar to other E. faecium isolates in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database, and the highest sequence similarity (99%) was with the reference strain. In addition, mice infected with the E. faecium isolate succumbed to severe damage to the lungs, liver, spleen, myocardium, and kidney tissues. In summary, the isolated E. faecium from dead black bears induced pathological changes in mice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Helicoverpa armigera and Helicoverpa zea are major caterpillar pests of Old and New World agriculture, respectively. Both, particularly H. armigera, are extremely polyphagous, and H. armigera has developed resistance to many insecticides. Here we use comparative genomics, transcriptomics and resequencing to elucidate the genetic basis for their properties as pests. RESULTS We find that, prior to their divergence about 1.5 Mya, the H. armigera/H. zea lineage had accumulated up to more than 100 more members of specific detoxification and digestion gene families and more than 100 extra gustatory receptor genes, compared to other lepidopterans with narrower host ranges. The two genomes remain very similar in gene content and order, but H. armigera is more polymorphic overall, and H. zea has lost several detoxification genes, as well as about 50 gustatory receptor genes. It also lacks certain genes and alleles conferring insecticide resistance found in H. armigera. Non-synonymous sites in the expanded gene families above are rapidly diverging, both between paralogues and between orthologues in the two species. Whole genome transcriptomic analyses of H. armigera larvae show widely divergent responses to different host plants, including responses among many of the duplicated detoxification and digestion genes. CONCLUSIONS The extreme polyphagy of the two heliothines is associated with extensive amplification and neofunctionalisation of genes involved in host finding and use, coupled with versatile transcriptional responses on different hosts. H. armigera's invasion of the Americas in recent years means that hybridisation could generate populations that are both locally adapted and insecticide resistant.

Abstract
Conventional grain ethanol manufacturing is a high-temperature energy-intensive process comprising of multiple-unit operations when combined with lower ethanol recovery results in higher production cost. In liquefaction, jet cooking accounts for significant energy cost, while strong acid or base used for pH adjustment presents a safety hazard. A need is felt for sustainable ethanol manufacturing process that is less hazardous, consumes lower energy, and operates in a low pH range of 4.50-5.50. A single temperature liquefaction (STL) process that could efficiently operate at lower liquefaction temperature over a pH range of 4.50-5.50 was developed using rice and corn feedstock. Ethanol recovery witnessed at pH 4.5, 5.0, and 5.5 are 481.2 ± 1.5, 492.4 ± 1.5, and 493.6 ± 1.5 L MT-1 rice, respectively. Similarly, ethanol recovery witnessed at pH 4.5, 5.0, and 5.5 are 404.6 ± 1.3, 413.9 ± 0.8, and 412.4 ± 1.8 L MT-1 corn, respectively. The improvement in ethanol recovery is attributed to higher starch conversion by alpha-amylase even at pH as low as 4.50. Thus, the STL process operated at pH lower than 5.20 is poised to enhance sustainability by offering dual advantage of energy as well as chemical saving.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although both obesity and hypertension are known risk factors for disability, the joint association of obesity and hypertension with risk of disability is unknown. This paper is aim to examine the joint association of obesity and hypertension with risk of disability. METHODS Cross-sectional study with 8060 elderly community-dwelling individuals participating in the survey initiated by Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission from March to September 2013. Obesity was measured using the body mass index (BMI) in World Health Organization (WHO) Asia criteria. Hypertension, based on the doctor's diagnosis, was obtained through face-to-face interview. Disability was measured using the self-reported physical self-maintenance scale (PSMS) and the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) scale developed by Lawton and Brody. RESULTS A total of 8.97% of participants reported ADL disability, and 15.18% for IADL disability. After adjusting social demographics and chronic conditions, the risk of ADL disability was progressively greater in obese persons with hypertension (OR=1.40, 95% CI=1.05-1.89), underweight persons without hypertension (OR=2.05, 95% CI=1.29-3.25), and underweight persons with hypertension (OR=2.14, 95% CI=1.36-3.36). For IADL disability, only underweight persons with hypertension were significantly associated (OR=1.65, 95% CI=1.23-2.21). CONCLUSIONS Low or extremely high BMI, independent of its metabolic consequences, is a risk factor for disability among the elderly. Simple hypertension wasn't significantly associated with disability. In addition, having hypertension significantly increased the risk of ADL disability in obese individuals and IADL disability in underweight individuals.

Abstract
miRNAs play critical roles in heart disease. In addition to differential miRNA expression, miRNA-mediated control is also affected by variable miRNA processing or alternative 3'-end cleavage and polyadenylation (APA) of their mRNA targets. To what extent these phenomena play a role in the heart remains unclear. We sought to explore miRNA processing and mRNA APA in cardiomyocytes, and whether these change during cardiac hypertrophy. Thoracic aortic constriction (TAC) was performed to induce hypertrophy in C57BL/6J mice. RNA extracted from cardiomyocytes of sham-treated, pre-hypertrophic (2 days post-TAC), and hypertrophic (7 days post-TAC) mice was subjected to small RNA- and poly(A)-test sequencing (PAT-Seq). Differential expression analysis matched expectations; nevertheless we identified ~400 mRNAs and hundreds of noncoding RNA loci as altered with hypertrophy for the first time. Although multiple processing variants were observed for many miRNAs, there was little change in their relative proportions during hypertrophy. PAT-Seq mapped ~48,000 mRNA 3'-ends, identifying novel 3' untranslated regions (3'UTRs) for over 7000 genes. Importantly, hypertrophy was associated with marked changes in APA with a net shift from distal to more proximal mRNA 3'-ends, which is predicted to decrease overall miRNA repression strength. We independently validated several examples of 3'UTR proportion change and showed that alternative 3'UTRs associate with differences in mRNA translation. Our work suggests that APA contributes to altered gene expression with the development of cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and provides a rich resource for a systems-level understanding of miRNA-mediated regulation in physiological and pathological states of the heart.

Abstract
Cucurbitacin-I (Cu-I, also known as Elatericin B or JSI-124) is developed to inhibit constitutive and abnormal activation of STAT3 in many cancers, demonstrating a potent anticancer activity by targeting disruption of STAT3 function. Here, we for the first time systematically studied the underlying molecular mechanisms of Cu-I-induced gastric cancer cell death both in vitro and in vivo. In our study, we show that Cu-I markedly inhibits gastric cancer cell growth by inducing G2/M phase cell cycle arrest and apoptosis at low nanomolar concentrations via a STAT3-independent mechanism. Notably, Cu-I significantly decreases intracellular GSH/GSSG ratio by inhibiting NRF2 pathway to break cellular redox homeostasis, and subsequently induces the expression of GADD45α in a p53-independent manner, and activates JNK/p38 MAPK signaling. Interestingly, Cu-I-induced GADD45α and JNK/p38 MAPK signaling form a positive feedback loop and can be reciprocally regulated by each other. Therefore, the present study provides new insights into the mechanisms of antitumor effects of Cu-I, supporting Cu-I as an attractive therapeutic drug in gastric cancer by modulating the redox balance.

Abstract
An anti-colliding pulse-type III-V-on-silicon passively mode-locked laser is presented for the first time based on a III-V-on-silicon distributed Bragg reflector as outcoupling mirror implemented partially underneath the III-V saturable absorber. Passive mode-locking at 4.83 GHz repetition rate generating 3 ps pulses is demonstrated. The generated fundamental RF tone shows a 1.7 kHz 3 dB linewidth. Over 9 mW waveguide coupled output power is demonstrated.

Abstract
Picosecond-pulse III-V-on-silicon mode-locked lasers based on linear and ring extended cavity geometries are presented. In passive mode-locked operation a 12 kHz -3dB linewidth of the fundamental RF tone at 4.7 GHz is obtained for the linear cavity geometry and 16 kHz for the ring cavity geometry. Stabilization of the repetition rate of these devices using hybrid mode-locking is also demonstrated.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to assess the relationship between hypertension and risk of depression. The relationship between hypertension and depression has been discussed for a long time, but the results are controversial. Studies were searched from PubMed and Cochrane up to 24 March 2014. Any prospective cohort study, which possibly reported the relationship between hypertension and depression, was included. The random effect model was used to calculate the pooled relative risk (RR). Finally, five prospective cohort studies were included for analysis, with a total of 9647 participants involved. Our meta-analysis does not support that hypertension is probably a risk factor of depression. The pooled RR was 1.16 (95% confidence interval: 0.91, 1.42) when those exposed to hypertension were compared with those who were not. Subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis and publication bias test suggested that the overall result of this analysis was robust. Further studies are needed to exclude the effects of other confounding factors.

Abstract
A conventional process for ethanol production involving liquefaction followed by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) under the yeast fermentation conditions, was investigated at 30 and 35% dry solid (DS) of Indian broken rice and pearl millet feedstocks. The study followed the typical conventional process currently in use by the Indian Ethanol Industry. Liquefaction was carried out using a thermostable alpha amylase, and whereas SSF with a glucoamylase with additional side activities of pullulanase and protease under the yeast fermentation conditions. To measure the enzyme efficacy in the liquefaction process, fermentable sugar and liquefact solubility (brix) were monitored at the end of the liquefaction process. The liquefact was subjected to SSF with yeast. Addition of an acid fungal protease at a concentration of 0.1 kg per metric ton of grain during SSF was observed to accelerate yeast growth and ultimately, ethanol yield with both feedstocks. With both concentrations of feedstocks, the fermentation efficiency and ethanol recovery were determined. This study assesses the potential of these enzymes for ethanol production with higher dry solid concentration (≥30% w/w DS) of both these feedstocks in the conventional process to achieve higher plant throughput without compromising fermentation efficiency and ethanol recovery.

Abstract
We present a method of direct measurement of spectral gain and corresponding data in photonic crystal waveguides defined in heterostructures on InP substrates. The method makes use of two photopumping beams, one for gain generation, the other for amplification probing. The results show a clear enhancement of gain at spectral regions of low-group velocity, namely at the edges of the so-called mini-stopband of a three-missing rows wide photonic crystal waveguide.

Abstract
Two mutants of cholera toxin (CTS106 containing a Pro106-->Ser substitution and CTK63 containing a Ser63-->Lys substitution) with greatly reduced or no toxicity respectively, were expressed in the naturally attenuated IEM101 Vibrio cholerae strain (El Tor, Ogawa) which does not express cholera toxin (CT). Expression was driven by the natural promoter of CT, or by a promoter known to induce strong in vivo expression such as nirB. In the rabbit ileal loop assay, where 10(4) wild type bacteria were sufficient to induce fluid accumulation, 10(9) IEM101 expressing CTS106 bacteria were needed to induce some fluid accumulation, while IEM101 expressing CTK63 was inactive, even when 10(10) cells were used. When used to immunize mice intranasally, all bacteria induced vibriocidal antibodies; however, anti-CT antibodies were not induced by bacteria expressing low levels of CTK63 under the control of the ct promoter. Anti-CT antibodies were successfully induced by bacteria expressing high levels of CTK63 under the control of the nirB promoter, or by bacteria expressing low levels of CTS106. These data show that antibodies against cholera toxin can be induced in vivo by high level expression of a non toxic mutant, or by using a mutant with residual ADP-ribosyltransferase activity. In conclusion, we have shown that IEM101, a naturally attenuated Vibrio strain known to be safe and immunogenic in humans, can be engineered to express immunogenic levels of CTK63, and may represent a good candidate for vaccination against cholera.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of extirpation of bronchi on histology and physiological function. METHODS 21 dogs were divided in to two groups: control (3) and experimental (18). After bronchi extirpation one week, two weeks, one month, three months, six months, and twelve months, we used specimens to test the pulmonary surfactant (PS) and to observe the morphological changes. RESULTS After the operation, the residual lung nearby the operative area had traumatic changes. Around the aforementioned area, the structure of lung was normal. Specially after six months, the lung returned to good status. We found that two weeks after operation, the contents of PS increased remarkably (P < 0.05). After one month the parameter returned to normal (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The residual lung after bronchi extirpation had ventilation and air-exchange functions. The lung function was preserved directly.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of superoxide anion (02-*) in the regulation of p53 or c-Ha-ras expression and proliferation in the prostate cancer cell line PC3. Cell proliferation was tested by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay in the presence of O2-*, basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) or their combination. p53 or C-Ha-ras expression in the cells treated with O2-* was assayed by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The proliferation was significantly inhibited by O2-* in a concentration-dependent manner ranging from 9 to 36 micromol/l nicotinamide adenine dinucleotid (NADH) combined with 2-8 micromol/l N-methylphenazonium methyl sulfate (PMS). Enhancement of proliferation by 2 ng/ml bFGF was significantly inhibited by O2-*. Although O2-* was not able to alter c-Ha-ras gene expression, O2-* at the concentrations of 18 micromol/l NADH and 4 micromol/l PMS upregulated the expression of p53. O2-* may modulate proliferation and gene expression in PC3 cells.

Abstract
Seven bio-active alkaloids (stepholidine, sinoacutine, isocorydine, l-tetrahydropalmatine, crebanine, fanchinoline and tetrandrine) in Stephania plants were determined by RP-HPLC, using UV detection (282 nm) and gradient elution. The reversed phase system consisted of ODS column and methanol-water-triethylamine as mobile phase. The flow rate was 1.0 ml.min-1. Good linearity between peak heights and concentrations of the alkaloids was obtained in the concentration range. The HPLC method proved accurate, precise and sensitive. The results showed that there were some differences in the occurrence and content of the alkaloids between various species and between the same species from different habitats and collecting time. Based on the results, some species with high content of the 7 bio-active alkaloids were selected. The study provided some useful information for the utilization of medicinal plant resources in the genus Stephania.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To discuss the clinical criteria for diagnosing diffuse axonal injury (DAI). METHODS Clinical and computed tomographic features of 117 patients with severe closed head injury were analyzed. The authors preliminarily put forward CT diagnostic criteria of DAI, that is, 1) single or multiple small intraparenchymal hemorrhages in the cerebral hemispheres (< 2 cm in diameter); 2) intraventricular hemorrhage; 3) hemorrhage in the corpus callosum; 4) small focal areas of hemorrhage adjacent to the third ventricle (< 2 cm in diameter); and 5) brain stem hemorrhage. All patients were divided into two groups, DAI and non-DAI group, according to the criteria. There were 42 patients in the DAI group and 75 patients in the non-DAI group. The injury causes, Glasgow coma scale (GCS) scores on admission, coexisting injuries and outcomes were compared between the two groups. The relationship between DAI and the outcomes in the patients with severe head injury was analyzed. RESULTS Traffic accident was the main injury cause in the cases of DAI. GCS scores on admission in patients with DAI were significantly lower than those in patients without DAI. The incidence of diffuse brain swelling (DBS) in the DAI group was significantly higher than that in the non-DAI group, whereas the incidences of both skull fracture and epidural hematoma (EDH) in the DAI group were significantly lower than those in non-DAI group. There was no significant difference between the incidence of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and subdural hematoma (SDH) in the two groups. The incidence of poor outcome in the DAI group was significantly higher than that in the non-DAI group, although there was no significant difference between the mortalities in the two groups. CONCLUSIONS Because DAI is a very important factor worsening the outcome of patients with head injury, it is essential to make a diagnosis as soon as possible. The clinical manifestations of DAI, however, are not specific and DAI does not show directly on CT scans, so it is difficult to make a definite diagnosis. The CT diagnostic criteria of DAI put forward in this article are practicable, though they are by no means perfect.

Abstract
Human milk samples were obtained from 146 lactating women living in five distinct geographic regions of the People's Republic of China. The regions were characterized as follows: pastoral, rural, urban 1, urban 2, and marine. Dietary information obtained on a subsample of women providing milk suggested distinct differences in the food availability in the five regions and the habitual diets of the lactating women studied. The milk concentration of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) varied greatly (g/100 g total fatty acids): 0.44 +/- 0.29 (pastoral), 0.68 +/- 0.29 (rural), 0.88 +/- 0.34 (urban 1), 0.82 +/- 0.35 (urban 2), and 2.78 +/- 1.20 (marine region). Docosahexaenoic acid is critical for brain and retina development in the infant. Milk arachidonic acid (AA) ranged from 0.80 +/- 0.14 (rural) to 1.17 +/- 0.33 and 1.22 +/- 0.32 g/100 g fatty acids from the marine and pastoral regions. Arachidonic acid is associated with infant growth. The AA to DHA ratio (g/g) was highly variable also: 2.77 (pastoral), 1.18 (rural), 1.01 (urban 1), 1.23 (urban 2), and 0.42 (marine). The DHA concentration found in the milk of women from the marine region was twice as high as any reported previously, but was in a range similar to the amounts found in the milk of women fed fish oil. Seafood consumption by the women residing in the marine region is a likely contributor to the DHA concentration in their milk. These data illustrate the heterogeneity of the fatty acid composition of human milk and suggest a great influence of geography and the maternal diet on concentrations of DHA and AA in human milk.

Abstract
One hundred twenty cases of malignant pleural effusion were treated by intrapleural administration of large doses of DDP (500-1,000 mg) followed by iv infusion of sodium thiosulfate for 3 days. Each patient received 1-4 cycles of treatment. Of 120 cases, 89 had their effusion completely disappeared and in 6 of them, it was accompanied by complete regression of tumors in the lung. Partial response was observed in 19 cases with an overall response rate of 90.0%. The median remission period was 6.4 month. Abstract
A new fluorescent derivatization reagent with a lophine skeleton, 2-(4-hydrazinocarbonylphenyl)-4,5-diphenylimidazole (HCPI), has been synthesized and applied to the assay of saturated free fatty acids. The HCPI derivatives with five representative saturated fatty acids [caproic acid (C6), lauric acid (C12), palmitic acid (C16), stearic acid (C18) and arachidic acid (C20)] were synthesized to examine their fluorescence properties. The fluorescence spectra (lambda ex ca. 335 nm, lambda em ca. 455 nm) of the derivatives were almost identical in methanol, n-heptane and acetonitrile. For the high-performance liquid chromatographic assay, fatty acids were derivatized with HCPI using a condensing agent, 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide, and pyridine at room temperature. The HCPI derivatives were separated on a C18 column with a gradient elution of methanol-water, and the eluates were monitored at 455 nm using an excitation wavelength of 335 nm. By this method, seven kinds of free fatty acid (C6, C10, C12, C14, C16, C18 and C20) could be determined using margaric acid (C17) as an internal standard. Calibration curves were linear over the range 0.2-400 pmol per 20-microliters injection (r = 0.994-1.000). Relative standard deviations of the peak-height ratio for five replicate measurements of fatty acids (100 pmol per injection) were 0.7-2.6%. Detection limits were 7-57 fmol at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. The method could be successfully applied to the determination of four saturated fatty acids (C12, C14, C16 and C18) in normal human serum.

Abstract
A sample of 80 accessions collected from several major barley growing areas in China was assayed for restriction fragment length polymorphisms at two regions of the chloroplast DNA and the intergenic spacer of the ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA). The results showed that the spacer length was highly polymorphic and 8 spacer length variants constituting 8 phenotypes were observed in this sample. It is also clear that the spacer length variants and the phenotypes were differentially distributed in different geographical regions, probably due to adaptation of the genotypes to the local environments. We did not detect variation in the two chloroplast fragments, indicating that the variability of chloroplast DNA is low in cultivated barley.

Abstract
The frequency chirping of a single-mode semiconductor laser in the presence of optical feedback is studied by rate-equation analysis. The model includes the amplitude-phase-coupling and spectral-hole-burning effects. A simple analytical formula is obtained in the small-signal regime that shows that the amplitude-phase-coupling effect also enhances the chirp-reduction ratio and that the maximum reduction of frequency chirping can be achieved at the same time as maximum line narrowing in the in-phase condition.
