Abstract
The relationship between protein stability and function evolution has not been explored in proteins from natural sources. Here, we investigate the phylogenetic differences of Perivitellin-1 (PV1) a novel family of hyperstable egg carotenoproteins crucial to the reproductive success of Pomacea snails, as they have evolved clade-specific protective functions. We studied P. patula PV1 (PpaPV1) from Flagellata clade eggs, the most basal of Pomacea and compared it with PV1s orthologs from derived clades. PpaPV1 stands as the most stable, with longer unfolding half-life, resistance to detergent unfolding, and therefore higher kinetic stability than PV1s from derived clades. In fact, PpaPV1 is among the most hyperstable proteins described in nature. In addition, its spectral characteristics providing a pale egg coloration, mild lectin activity and glycan specificity are narrower than derived clades. Our results provide evidence indicating large structural and functional changes along the evolution of the genus. Notably, the lectin binding of PpaPV1 is less pronounced, and its glycan specificity is narrower compared to PV1s in the sister Bridgesii clade. Our findings underscore the phylogenetic disparities in terms of structural and kinetic stability, as well as defensive traits like a potent lectin activity affecting the gut morphology of potential predators within the Bridgesii clade or a conspicuous, likely warning coloration, within the Canaliculata clade. This work provides a comprehensive comparison of the structural attributes, stability profiles, and functional roles of apple snail egg PV1s from multiple species within a phylogenetic context. Furthermore, it proposes an evolutionary hypothesis suggesting a trade-off between structural stability and the functional aspects of apple snail's major egg defense protein.

Abstract
VEXAS (vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, autoinflammatory, somatic) syndrome is a newly described autoinflammatory entity caused by a UBA-1 gene mutation. Among the most frequent symptoms it produces fever, cytopenias, polychondritis, pulmonary infiltrates and up to 40% ocular involvement such as periorbital edema, uveitis, episcleritis, scleritis and retinal vasculitis. Patients respond to high doses of corticosteroids, however, many end up being refractory to them and to the classic immunosuppressants. We described the case of a 77-year-old male patient with ocular involvement in the form of episcleritis and periorbital edema who was later diagnosed with VEXAS Syndrome. The patient, after failing treatment with immunosuppressants, is currently receiving treatment with oral steroids and tocilizumab. Ophthalmologist must be aware of the ophthalmological affectation of autoinflammatory diseases and especially of this new entity described as the VEXAS Syndrome.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cornea verticillata (CV) or vortex keratopathy is characterized by the presence of spiral-shaped deposits in the corneal epithelium. The most frequent causes are antimalarial drugs and amiodarone and, among systemic causes, Fabry disease (FD). MATERIAL AND METHODS A multidisciplinary, prospective, descriptive study was conducted in a tertiary reference center in Spain's Autonomous Community of Navarre after the implementation of a FD screening program for patients attended to in the Ophthalmology Department. The study analyzed those diagnosed with CV, who were subsequently referred to the rare disease clinic of the University Hospital of Navarre's Internal Medicine Department for an FD study. RESULTS Two women and four men with a mean age of 76.8 years were diagnosed with CV out of a total of 17,280 patients evaluated in outpatient consultations by three ophthalmology specialists during the period from April 2018 to April 2020. One patient died before performing the screening study and no patients were diagnosed with FD. CONCLUSIONS Despite the fact that the University Hospital of Navarre's FD screening program for patients with CV did not confirm any cases of FD, ophthalmology specialists should consider the possible diagnosis of FD in patients with CV in their routine consultations.

Abstract
BackgroundA personalized disease-specific treatment for non-infectious uveitis (NIU) is challenging. Around 50% of adults with NIU who required classic DMARDs or adalimumab in clinical trials, failed at 6 months during open label phase [1,2]. Therefore, to investigate treatment alternatives for NIU are most needed.ObjectivesTo study Certolizumab pegol (CZP) retention rate (RR) at 24 months in NIU and susceptibility factors for discontinuation.MethodsAdults with NIU who received CZP for this indication were included. Data were gathered from the BioÚvea Spanish registry, detailed elsewhere[3]. Demographics, clinical, and therapeutic data was recorded from Nov 2016 to Nov 2017. The primary endpoint assessed was CZP RR at 24 months. Causes and susceptibility factors for definitive discontinuation of CZP were analyzed as well. CZP RR was calculated with the Kaplan-Meier method, Log-rank test was used for the univariate, and the Cox proportional hazard model was implemented for the multivariate analysis.ResultsThirty patients with a median of 41 (IQR 16) years, 18 (60%) females, were included. NIUs were bilateral in 19 (63%) patients and were active at CZP onset in 20 (71%). Half of the patients suffered from non-anterior NIUs, and etiologically 2 (7%) were unclassifiable, 7 (23%) had ocular syndromes, and 21 (70%) were associated to systemic disorders. Seven (23%) patients were bio-naïve, whereas 23 (77%) started CZP as a 2nd (5, 17%) or ≥ 3rd (18, 60%) biologic. With a median follow-up of 21.2 (Range 0.2 to 54.8) months, 12 (40%) patients discontinued CZP, 6 (20%) due to adverse events and 6 (20%) due to lack of efficacy. The overall CZP RR at 24 months was 53.6%, with a median Retention Time (RT) of 27.1 months. In the multivariate analysis, CZP started as a first biologic (HR 0.053, 95%CI 0.003 to 0.809; p = 0.035), and male gender (HR 0.1, 95%CI 0.015 to 0.694; p = 0.02) were protective factors for discontinuation. CZP RR at 24 months as a 1st line biologic was 100% with a median RT of 27.1 months. Conversely, CZP RR at 24 months as a ≥2nd line was 41.1% with a median RT of 17.1 months. When given as a 1st biologic, one (14%) patient discontinued CZP due to loss of efficacy at 27.1 months. Abstract
Introduction The objective of these study is to know the characteristics of COVID-19 in patients with uveitis associated with Systemic Autoimmune Disease (SAD) through telematic survey. Material and methods Internal Medicine Society and Group of Systemic Autoimmune disease conducted a telematic survey of patients with SAD to learn about the characteristics of COVID-19 in this population. Results A total of 2,789 patients answered the survey, of which 28 had a diagnosis of uveitis associated with SAE. The majority (82%) were female and caucasian (82%), with a mean age of 48 years. The most frequent SAEs were Behçet’s disease followed by sarcoidosis and systemic lupus erythematosus. 46% of the patients were receiving corticosteroid treatment at a mean prednisone dose of 11 mg/day. Regarding infection, 14 (50%) patients reported symptoms compatible with SARS-CoV-2 infection. RT-PCR was performed on the nasopharyngeal smear in two patients and in one of them (4%) it was positive. Conclusions Both asymptomatic and symptomatic COVID-19 patients with ASD-associated UNI had received similar immunosuppressive treatment.

Abstract
Introducción El objetivo de este estudio es conocer las características de la COVID-19 en pacientes con uveítis asociada a enfermedades autoinmunes sistémicas (EAS) mediante una encuesta telemática. Material y métodos La Sociedad Española de Medicina Interna por medio del Grupo de Trabajo de Enfermedades Autoinmunes realizó una encuesta telemática a pacientes con EAS para conocer las características de la COVID-19 en esta población. Resultados Un total de 2.789 pacientes contestaron la encuesta, de los que 28 tenían un diagnóstico de uveítis asociada a una EAS. La mayoría (82%) eran mujeres y caucásicas (82%), con una media de 48 años. Las EAS más frecuentes fueron la enfermedad de Behçet seguida de la sarcoidosis y del lupus eritematoso sistémico. El 46% de los pacientes estaban recibiendo tratamiento con corticoides a una dosis media de prednisona de 11 mg/día. Respecto a la infección, 14 (50%) pacientes referían síntomas compatibles con infección por SARS-CoV-2. Se realizó RT-PCR en el frotis nasofaríngeo en dos pacientes y en uno de ellos (4%) fue positivo. Conclusiones Los pacientes con UNI asociada a EAS tanto los asintomáticos como los sintomáticos de COVID-19 habían recibido de forma similar tratamiento inmunosupresor.

Abstract
The Membrane Attack Complex-Perforin (MACPF) family is ubiquitously found in all kingdoms. They have diverse cellular roles, however MACPFs with pore-forming toxic function in venoms and poisons are very rare in animals. Here we present the structure of PmPV2, a MACPF toxin from the poisonous apple snail eggs, that can affect the digestive and nervous systems of potential predators. We report the three-dimensional structure of PmPV2, at 17.2 Å resolution determined by negative-stain electron microscopy and its solution structure by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). We found that PV2s differ from nearly all MACPFs in two respects: it is a dimer in solution and protomers combine two immune proteins into an AB toxin. The MACPF chain is linked by a single disulfide bond to a tachylectin chain, and two heterodimers are arranged head-to-tail by non-covalent forces in the native protein. MACPF domain is fused with a putative new Ct-accessory domain exclusive to invertebrates. The tachylectin is a six-bladed β-propeller, similar to animal tectonins. We experimentally validated the predicted functions of both subunits and demonstrated for the first time that PV2s are true pore-forming toxins. The tachylectin "B" delivery subunit would bind to target membranes, and then the MACPF "A" toxic subunit would disrupt lipid bilayers forming large pores altering the plasma membrane conductance. These results indicate that PV2s toxicity evolved by linking two immune proteins where their combined preexisting functions gave rise to a new toxic entity with a novel role in defense against predation. This structure is an unparalleled example of protein exaptation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe uveitis complications and visual acuity in a cohort of 500 patients in a multidisciplinary unit in northern Spain. MATERIAL AND METHODS Retrospective-prospective study of complications and visual acuity of 500 adult patients evaluated in the Multidisciplinary Unit of the Navarra Hospital Complex from the period January 2010 until March 2015. An analysis was made of the complications, visual acuity and visual loss, with a follow-up of one-year. A comparative study was also made of the complications with 2 previous series published in Madrid and Holland. RESULTS Moderate-severe visual loss was 13.5% in the right eye, and 13% in the left eye. Visual loss was associated with an age of 65 years or above. Complications were observed in 35% of patients, and cataract was the most frequent complication (10%), followed by synechiae (8%), and macular oedema (5%). Compared with the 2 other series, the present cohort showed a higher proportion of cataracts. CONCLUSIONS Visual loss was associated with older age and cataract was the most common complication in our study.

Abstract
High fecundity often contributes to successful invasives. In molluscs, this may be facilitated by the albumen gland-capsule gland complex, which in gastropods secretes the egg perivitelline fluid that nourishes and protects embryos. The biochemistry of the albumen gland-capsule gland complex and its relationship with fecundity remain largely unknown. We addressed these issues in Pomacea canaliculata (Lamarck, 1822), a highly invasive gastropod whose fecundity and reproductive effort exceed those of ecologically similar gastropods. We evaluated the dynamics of its major secretion compounds (calcium, polysaccharides, and total proteins) as well as the gene expression and stored levels of perivitellins during key moments of the reproductive cycle, that is, before and after first copulation and at low, medium, and high reproductive output. Copulation and first oviposition do not trigger the onset of albumen gland-capsule gland complex biosynthesis. On the contrary, soon after an intermediate reproductive effort, genes encoding perivitellins overexpressed. A high reproductive effort caused a decrease in all albumen gland-capsule gland complex secretion components. Right after a high reproductive output, the albumen gland-capsule gland complex restored the main secretion components, and calcium recovered baseline reserves; but proteins and polysaccharides did not. These metabolic changes in the albumen gland-capsule gland complex after multiple ovipositions were reflected in a reduction in egg mass but did not compromise egg quality. At the end of the cycle, egg dry weight almost doubled the initial albumen gland-capsule gland complex weight. Results indicate that albumen gland-capsule gland complex biosynthesis limits a constantly high reproductive output. Therefore, lowering fecundity by targeting biosynthesis could effectively reduce the rate of this species' spread.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the main characteristics of a cohort of patients with uveitis referred to a multidisciplinary unit in northern Spain. MATERIAL AND METHODS Retrospective analysis of clinical records of patients evaluated in the Multidisciplinary Unit of the Navarra Hospital Complex from the period January 2010 until March 2015. An analysis was performed on the demographic characteristics, origin, types of uveitis, laterality, and aetiology. The present series was also compared with 2 previous series from Castilla y León and Barcelona. RESULTS A total of 500 patients were identified, with a mean age of 47.9±16.4 years, with 50% women. The most frequent type of uveitis was anterior uveitis (65.4%), followed by posterior uveitis (17.6%), panuveitis (15.2%), and intermediate uveitis (1.8%). The origin was unclassifiable in 31.2%, followed by non-infectious systemic disease in 29.2%. Ankylosing spondylitis was the most frequent cause in 10.8% of patients, followed by herpes infection in 9.2%, and toxoplasmosis in 7.8%, respectively. Compared with the 2other cohorts, the present cohort showed a higher proportion of unilateral anterior uveitis. Furthermore, the patients from the Navarra series had a higher prevalence of unilateral and idiopathic uveitis compared to the series from Barcelona. CONCLUSIONS The main characteristics of the present cohort of patients with uveitis are similar to those of patients from other regions of our country. Unilateral anterior uveitis and idiopathic uveitis were the most frequent in our series.

Abstract
The freshwater snails Pomacea Perry, 1810 lay conspicuous aerial egg clutches that are ignored by most predators. Egg biochemical defenses in the apple snail Pomacea canaliculata (Lamarck, 1822) are provided by multifunctional proteins. We analyzed the eggs of a sympatric species, Pomacea maculata Perry, 1810, studying the gross composition, toxicity, hemagglutinating activity, and its antinutritive and antidigestive properties. Eggs are mostly composed of polysaccharides (mainly galactogen) and proteins, followed by lipids and nonsoluble calcium. Two perivitellins account for ∼85% dry mass of the egg protein. The major lipids are phospholipids and sterols. A suite of potential defenses was determined, including strong lethal neurotoxicity on mice and moderate antidigestive and lectin activities. Remarkably, their polysaccharides were refractive to in vitro digestion by digestive glycosidases. This study characterized ∼99% of egg composition and identified multiple potential defenses, provided not only by proteins but also by polysaccharides. This is the first evidence to our knowledge that reserve sugars may be involved in defenses, giving further insight into the unusual reproductive strategy of these well-defended snail eggs.

Abstract
Several agrochemicals like organophosphates are extensively used to control pests in agricultural practices but they also adversely affect non-target fauna. The effect of organophosphorous fenitrothion on the prawn Macrobrachium borellii was evaluated. The 96-h LC50 was determined. Activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione-S-transferase and lipid oxidation levels, were evaluated in the hepatopancreas from adults exposed to sublethal fenitrothion concentrations for 1, 2, 4 and 7 days. In addition, superoxide dismutase mRNA expression, acetylcholinesterase inhibition and haemocyte DNA damage were determined. The 96-h LC50 was 4.24μg/l of fenitrothion. Prawn exposed to sublethal FS concentrations showed an increase of both catalase and superoxide dismutase activities, mainly after 2 and 4 days exposure and an increase of glutathione-S-transferase activity from day 2 to day 7 while lipid oxidation levels increased mainly on day 1. Superoxide dismutase transcripts were significantly higher in fenitrothion -treated prawns, indicating an induction mechanism. Hemolymph analysis showed that while acetylcholinesterase activity decreased after 2 days, haemocytes displayed most DNA damage after 7-day exposure to fenitrothion. These results indicate that prawn enzymes are highly sensitive to fenitrothion exposure, and these biological responses in M. borellii could be valuable biomarkers to monitor organophosphorous contamination in estuarine environments.

Abstract
Hydrocarbon pollution is a major environmental threat to ecosystems in marine and freshwater environments, but its toxicological effect on aquatic organisms remains little studied. A proteomic approach was used to analyze the effect of a freshwater oil spill on the prawn Macrobrachium borellii. To this aim, proteins were extracted from midgut gland (hepatopancreas) of male and female prawns exposed 7 days to a sublethal concentration (0.6 ppm) of water-soluble fraction of crude oil (WSF). Exposure to WSF induced responses at the protein expression level. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) revealed 10 protein spots that were differentially expressed by WSF exposure. Seven proteins were identified using MS/MS and de novo sequencing. Nm23 oncoprotein, arginine methyltransferase, fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase and glutathione S-transferase were down-regulated, whereas two glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase isoforms and a lipocalin-like crustacyanin (CTC) were up-regulated after WSF exposure. CTC mRNA levels were further analyzed by quantitative real-time PCR showing an increased expression after WSF exposure. The proteins identified are involved in carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism, detoxification, transport of hydrophobic molecules and cellular homeostasis among others. These results provide evidence for better understanding the toxic mechanisms of hydrocarbons. Moreover, some of these differentially expressed proteins would be employed as potential novel biomarkers.

Abstract
The aim of the present work was to evaluate the effect of the water soluble fraction of hydrocarbons (WSF) on the antioxidant status of the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium borellii. First, seasonal variations were studied in a non-polluted area. Hepatopancreas and gills showed season-related fluctuations in catalase (CAT), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activities and in lipid peroxidation levels (LPO), but not in superoxide dismutase (SOD). Then, adults were exposed semi-statically to sublethal doses for 7days. CAT, SOD, GST, and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities and LPO, reduced glutathione (GSH) and protein oxidation (PO) levels were determined. Exposed individuals showed significant increases in CAT, SOD, and GST activities in hepatopancreas and CAT activity in gills. GPx activity did not vary in either tissues. While LPO levels increased, GSH levels decreased significantly in hepatopancreas of exposed animals, but PO levels showed no variation. Induction of SOD was also assessed by Real-time PCR mRNA expression in hepatopancreas. The non-enzymatic antioxidant activity was also tested; ABTS 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethyl-benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) was higher in hemolymph of treated-prawns compared to controls, but ferric reducing activity of plasma assay (FRAP) values did not change. Taken together, the present results indicated that the antioxidant defenses of M. borellii, mainly in hepatopancreas, were significantly affected by aquatic hydrocarbon contamination, regardless of the season.

Abstract
Lipovitellin (LV) is essential in crustacean eggs for embryo viability and development. Two LV were isolated from eggs of Macrobrachium borellii. corresponding to early (LVe ) and late (LVl) embryo developing stages. They differ in lipid composition but not in lipid/protein ratio or apoprotein composition. Structural information was obtained by fluorescence spectroscopy, far-UV circular dichroism, partial trypsinolysis and electron microscopy applied to LVe and LVl and two partially delipidated forms of LVe generated by phospholipase A2 (LVp) or Triton X-100 (LVt) treatment. All LV forms contained two apoprotein subunits of 94 and 112 kDa, being the 112k Da subunit more accessible to trypsinolysis in all. Only in LVp, different cleavage sites appeared. Secondary structure was similar in LVe and LVl, but LVp and LVt showed a small increase in beta-sheet at expense of alpha-helix. Electron microscopy revealed a spheroidal morphology in all LV and a decreased size in LVp. Delipidated LVs were more resistant to denaturation with guanidinium-HCl. Acrylamide quenching of tryptophan fluorescence was more efficient in delipidated LVs, probably due to apolipoprotein rearrangement, as reinforced by fluorescence anisotropy. It is concluded that LV stability, shape, and apoprotein conformation is not largely affected by the changes in lipid composition that take place during embryogenesis.

Abstract
Carotenoid-binding proteins are commonly found in invertebrates. Their carotenoids form non-covalent complexes with proteins giving tissues a variety of colors. In molluscs they have been described in only a few species. In particular, the egg perivitellin fluid of those Ampullariid species which deposit eggs above the waterline is provided with carotenoproteins playing several roles ranging from photoprotection, antioxidant or antitrypsin actions to nutrient provision for development. These molecules form complex glyco-lipo-carotenoproteins of high molecular weight where either free astaxanthin (3,3'-dihydroxy-beta, beta'-carotene- 4,4'dione) or astaxanthin esterified with fatty acids, occur more frequently. This review compiles the current knowledge on the biochemical composition and biophysical data on the chemical and thermal stability of egg carotenoproteins in ampullariid. In addition, recent data on their metabolism, their cellular site of biosynthesis during perivitellogenesis, as well as their carotenoid binding properties are reviewed, highlighting the physiological significance of carotenoproteins in the context of the reproductive biology of these molluscs.

Abstract
The effect of the water-soluble fraction of crude oil (WSF) on lipid metabolism was studied at critical metabolic points, namely fatty acid activation, enzymes of triacylglycerol and phospholipid synthesis, and membrane (lipid packing) properties in the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium borellii. To determine the effect of the contaminant, adults and embryos at different stages of development were exposed to a sublethal concentration of WSF for 7 days. After exposure, microsomal palmitoyl-CoA synthetase (ACS) showed a two-fold increase in adult midgut gland. Embryo's ACS activity was also affected, the increment being correlated with the developing stage. Endoplasmic reticulum acylglycerol synthesis was also increased by WSF exposure in adults and stage 5 embryos, but not at earlier stages of development. Triacylglycerol synthesis was particularly increased (18.5%) in adult midgut gland. The microsomal membrane properties were studied by fluorescent steady-state anisotropy, using the rotational behavior of the fluorescent probe 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH). Microsomes from midgut gland of WSF-exposed prawn showed no differences in fluidity. Nevertheless, microsomes incubated with WSF in vitro increased their fluidity in a temperature- and WSF concentration-dependent fashion. Both, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons individually tested elicited an increase in membrane fluidity at 10 mg/l, but at 4 mg/l only nC10-C16 aliphatics did. In vivo results indicate that WSF increased the activity of microsomal enzymes that are critical in lipid metabolism, though this change was not due to direct alterations in membrane fluidity, suggesting a synthesis induction, or an enzyme-regulatory mechanism. Nevertheless, hydrocarbons elicited membrane fluidity alterations in in vitro experiments at concentrations that could be found in the environment after an oil spill.

Abstract
CLINICAL CASE A ten year-old girl, after a Yersinia gastroenteritis, developed an optic neuritis in the left eye. She was not treated and resulted ultimately in optic atrophy on the affected side. Six months later a similar episode occurred in the contralateral eye. On this occasion corticosteroid therapy was given. During this therapy the neuritis diminished; however the patient had three relapses, so it was decided to give her immunosuppressive treatment with azathioprine and continue this indefinitely. DISCUSSION After considering the differential diagnoses of bilateral recurrent optical neuritis in childhood, we concluded that it was most likely to have an autoimmune basis. After considering the benefits and risks of the long-term treatment, we believe immunosuppressive therapy is most useful in controlling the disease allowing corticosteroid therapy to be reduced.

Abstract
Little is known about the effect of the water-soluble fraction of crude oil (WSF) on lipid metabolism in invertebrates. The effect of the WSF on the triacylglycerol (TAG) mobilization, fatty acid activation and degradation was evaluated in the decapod Macrobrachium borellii, exposing adult and eggs at different stages of development for 7 days to a sublethal concentration of WSF. Using radioactive tracers, mitochondrial palmitoyl-CoA synthetase (ACS), triacylglycerol lipase (TAG-lipase) and fatty acid beta-oxidation system activities were assayed. Before studying the effect of WSF, the kinetic parameters of ACS were determined in purified mitochondria. Its optimal temperature and pH were 32 degrees C and 8.0, respectively, the apparent K(m) 2.48 micromol l(-1), and its V(max) of 1.93 nmol min(-1) mg protein(-1). These kinetic parameters differed significantly from this shrimp's microsomal isoform. After 7 days exposure to a sublethal concentration of WSF (0.6 mg/l), changes were observed in the enzymatic activity of all enzymes or enzymatic system assayed in adult midgut gland as well as in stage 5 eggs, a period of active organogenesis. An increase in the mobilization of energy stores was detected as early as stage 4, where TAG-lipase activity increased by 27% in exposed eggs. The increase was even more marked in exposed eggs at stage 5 where a three-fold rise (154%) was determined. Exposed adult shrimp also showed an augmented lipase activity by 38%. Fatty acid beta-oxidation increased by 51.0 and 35.5% in midgut gland and eggs at stage 5, respectively, but no changes were observed at less-developed stages. Mitochondrial fatty acid activation by ACS also increased in adults and stage 5 eggs by 7.4 and 52.0%, respectively. A similar response of the lipid catabolic pathways to WSF contamination in both adult and eggs, suggests that the exposure to this pollutant causes an increase in the energy needs of this shrimp. When validated by field studies, these catabolic enzymes could be employed as early pollution biomarkers.

Abstract
Seasonal variations in the morphology of the parenchymal mass and function of the albumen gland/capsule gland complex have been studied in Pomacea canaliculata, together with the cellular types involved in the synthesis and secretion of perivitellin fluid components. The two major parenchymal cell types, albumen secretory cells (AS) and labyrinthic cells (LC), undergo seasonal variations throughout the annual reproductive cycle, which is divided into three periods. Both cellular types show maximal development and structural complexity during the reproductive period (spring and summer). AS cells have a well-developed Golgi complex and rough endoplasmic reticulum and their secretory granules show electron-dense particles of about 20 nm (probably galactogen). These cells are uniquely involved in ovorubin and PV2 perivitellin synthesis and their secretory granules are the single storage site for these two major perivitellins, as revealed by immunoelectron microscopy. AS also possess calcium deposits that infiltrate the cytoplasmic matrix. The luminal surfaces of LC exhibit long cilia intermingled with sparce short microvilli. Basally, the plasma membrane shows deep irregular folds that extend through the cytoplasm up to the subapical region. Calcium deposits infiltrate the cytoplasm and accumulate in the extracellular space of the basal labyrinth. Nerve terminals seem to be involved in the regulation of parenchymal cell secretion. At the post-reproductive period, AS markedly change their aspect following the release of most of the secretory granules into the acinar lumen. LC decrease in volume, the number of their cilia decreases, their cytoplasmic folds are much thinner and their extracellular spaces lack calcium particles. At the pre-reproductive period (winter), AS and LC recover and prepare for the subsequent period.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate a new ocular tonometer (Proview) which functions by visualizing a phosphene after putting pressure on the upper eyelid. To ascertain its accuracy and reproducibility with respect to the Goldmann tonometer (GT). METHODS A study on both eyes of 110 non-selected patients was performed. One measurement with GT and three subsequent measurements with Proview were taken by the same investigator. The number of failed attempts to visualize the phosphene was recorded. We evaluated each eye separately to observe the possible learning effect. RESULTS The intraocular pressure (IOP) mean with Proview is 5 mm Hg higher than the GT (p < 0.001). The coefficient of correlation between both instruments is low (R = 0.67; R(2) = 0.45) in the right eye (RE). The difference between maximum and minimum values of the 3 measurements taken with the Proview was 3.21 (SD: 1.73) mm Hg in RE. The failed attempts to see the phosphene were 5.14 (SD: 2.39) in RE and 4.93 (SD: 2.78) in left eye (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The Proview(R) tonometer showed low accuracy and reproducibility in comparison with the GT. This tonometer requires a long learning process before phosphene visualization. The results demonstrated that this tonometer is not clinically useful, except in patients with serious corneal diseases which make measurement with GT very difficult.

Abstract
The effects of a water-soluble fraction of light crude oil dissolved in freshwater (WSF) on Macrobrachium borellii exposed at three life stages was evaluated. Adults, larvae (PL), and embryos were exposed to five levels of WSF for 96 h. At 48 and 72 h PL were significantly more sensitive to WSF than adults, though values for 96-h LC50 were not significantly different (1.56 and 1.41 mg/L, respectively). Mortality was never high enough to allow LC50 calculation in embryos, but chronic exposure to WSF increased the mortality near hatching and significantly decreased PL survival compared to the control group. The uptake, accumulation, and depuration of WSF were evaluated in adult prawns (lipid content 1.5% wet wt) exposed to a sublethal concentration for 96 h followed by a 10-d depuration period. Hydrocarbons were rapidly taken up, and after 24 h most of them reached an equilibrium concentration. Increases in the number and alkylation of the aromatic rings enhanced both their accumulation and their retention. When returned to clean freshwater, levels of lighter aromatics dropped rapidly over 12 h. From these studies we conclude that early life stages of M. borellii are not very vulnerable to WSF toxicity, while adults have a rapid uptake and release of most of the contaminating hydrocarbons, probably due to their low lipid levels.

Abstract
The site of synthesis of mollusc lipoproteins is hitherto unknown and was investigated for perivitellin 2 (PV2), an egg lipoprotein found in the freshwater snail Pomacea canaliculata. Tissues (albumen gland, gonad-digestive gland complex, and muscle) from vitellogenic females were incubated in vitro with 14C-leucine at 25 degrees C for 12 hr. At the end of incubation, soluble proteins from tissue homogenates and medium were analyzed for de novo protein synthesis by electrophoresis and HPLC, and radiolabeled proteins were quantified by liquid scintillation. Two albumen gland radiolabeled proteins (67 and 31 kDa) co-migrated with the subunits of PV2, and they represented 6.0% of the total labeled protein in that tissue. Western blot analysis confirmed the presence of PV2 only in the albumen gland. In vivo experiments where adult females were injected with 3H-leucine revealed that PV2 was not present in hemolymph. ELISA analysis in all tissues of the snail confirmed the PV2 presence only in the albumen gland and developing eggs with levels of 26 and 98 mg/g protein, respectively. Therefore, the albumen gland is the only site for PV2 synthesis, and no extra-gland synthesis, circulation, or accumulation could be found. PV2 subunits were further characterized analyzing N-terminal sequences which showed no homology with other proteins.

Abstract
Energy partitioning, composition of lipids and fatty acids, and their utilization by embryos were determined in the lecithotrophic shrimp Macrobrachium borellii during seven development stages. The biochemical composition at stage I is represented by lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates, with 29.3, 28.7, and 0.2% dry weight, respectively. The former two were identified as the major energy-providing components, contributing 131 and 60 cal/100 mg egg, dry weight, respectively. The overall conversion efficiency (CE) was 45.0% (calculated as percentage of vitelline energy transformed into embryonic tissues). Lipids were the most important energy reserve (CE 39.3%), followed by proteins (CE 57.1%), both being simultaneously utilized during development while carbohydrates were synthesized de novo (CE 587.5%). Variation in the lipid class composition of embryos and vitellus showed an accumulation of triacylglycerols (TAG) and phospholipids (PL) up to stage IV, a more active accumulation and selective utilization phase (stages V and VI), and a consumption and de novo synthesis period until hatching. Structural lipids (PL and cholesterol) and pigment astaxanthin were selectively conserved in embryos, but TAG, hydrocarbons, and esterified sterols were preferentially depleted. Monounsaturated fatty acids (FA) were the major group in TAG, whereas polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) were the major group in PL after organogenesis. Certain PUFA such as 22:6n-3 and 20:5n-3 were selectively accumulated in PL.

Abstract
The behaviour and state of the envelopes from B. subtilis cultures grown in Luria Bertani (LB) medium with and without 1.5 M NaCl are compared. Under hypertonic conditions, the hydrophobicity of the cultures increases. The phospholipid and fatty acid (FA) compositions show important differences: a higher cardiolipin (CL) content [at the expense of phosphatidylglycerol (PG)], and a higher unsaturated and straight chain FA content. The fluidity of the membranes, determined with fluorescent probes, indicates an increase in viscosity of the cytoplasmic membrane. The consequences of these variations in membrane permeability and osmotolerance are discussed.

Abstract
The activities of the enzymatic systems involved in the activation and degradation of fatty acids, and in the synthesis of triacylglycerols and phospholipids were studied in vitro using total cellular homogenate and subcellular fractions of eggs of the shrimp Macrobrachium borellii at different developing stages. Egg development was divided into seven stages based on morphological features of the embryo. Palmitoyl-CoA ligase activity increased as the embryo developed and showed its maximum at stage V. An increase in the synthesis of triacylglycerols and diacylglycerols was also observed at this stage. Diacylglycerylethers were synthesized more actively during the first stages of development. The higher specific activity observed in total homogenate than in microsomal fraction suggested that their synthesis was not exclusively microsomal. Phospholipid synthesis was very active all along development, reflecting active membrane biosynthesis. The highest activity of the cytosolic triacylglycerol lipase was observed at stage V. Fatty acid degradation, measured as mitochondrial beta-oxidation activity, did not vary significantly during development. We conclude that both the anabolic and catabolic processes concerning lipid metabolism are very active, with values similar to those described for adult hepatopancreas, revealing the major role of lipids during shrimp embryogenesis energetics, and that the highest activities of lipid synthesis-hydrolysis take place at stage V when embryos are under active organogenesis. Abstract
The envelope properties of B. subtilis cultures grown in LB and LBN hyperosmotic media (LB + 1.5 M NaCl) were compared. Since hypertonic cultures showed a Spo-phenotype, a Spo-mutant grown in LB was also analyzed. LBN cultures showed extensive filamentation and presented different sensitivities toward phage infection (phi29 and phi105), or antibiotics whose targets are at wall (lysozyme, penicillin G) or membrane level (polymyxin B, phosphonomycin). Results of the biochemical composition revealed that during hyperosmotic growth, the cell wall increased in thickness, and among the membrane lipids, glycolipid and cardiolipin increased in parallel with a decrease in phosphatidylglycerol. The fatty acid composition was also modified, and an increase in saturated straight chain with a decrease of saturated iso-branched fatty acids was observed. The increase of monounsaturated 18-1 (omega-9) fatty acid was probably related to the absence of sporulation observed in hypertonic media, since its increase has been shown to inhibit the KinA sensor of sporulation. The significance of the other wall and membrane composition variations (and hydrophobic surface properties) in relation to the osmotic adaptation are discussed.

Abstract
This study compared the frequency and effects of voice symptoms in teachers to a group of individuals employed in other occupations. Teachers were more likely to report having a voice problem (15 vs. 6%), having 10 specific voice symptoms, and having 5 symptoms of physical discomfort. They averaged almost 2 symptoms compared with none for nonteachers. Likewise, teachers were more likely to perceive that a voice problem would adversely affect their future career options, had done so in the past, and was limiting their current job performance. Over 20% of teachers but none of the nonteachers had missed any days of work due to a voice problem. These findings suggest that teaching is a high-risk occupation for voice disorders and that this health problem may have significant work-related and economic effects.

Abstract
The lipid and protein composition of the perivitelline fluid of the eggs of Pomacea canaliculata was investigated. Two lipoproteins (PV 1 and PV 2) and one lipoprotein fraction (PV 3) were detected for the first time in gastropods. They represent 57.0, 7.5, and 35.5% of the egg total proteins, respectively. PV 1 is a glyco-carotene-protein complex with characteristics of a very high-density lipoprotein (VHDL). It has 0.33% lipids, mainly free sterols and phospholipids. The particle has a MW of 300 Kd and is composed of three subunits of 35, 32, and 28 Kd, respectively. PV 2 particle is a VHDL of 400 Kd and 3.75% lipids. The major lipid classes are free sterols and phospholipids and also have significant quantities of energy-providing triacylglycerides and free fatty acids. It is composed of two apoproteins of 67 and 31 Kd. PV 3 density corresponds to a high-density lipoprotein (HDL). It was fractionated into two subfractions "h" and "p". Fraction "h" contains 5.16% lipids, mainly free sterols, phospholipids, and free fatty acids, and two particles of 100 and 64 Kd. Dissociating electrophoresis showed two subunits of 34 and 29 Kd. Fraction "p" is composed of a single particle of 26 Kd that contains 9.5% lipids, which represents 30% of the total egg lipids. It has high levels of a carotenoid pigment. Besides it contains free fatty acids, hydrocarbons, sterified sterols, and triacylglycerides. These three fractions are probably the major supply of lipids and amino acids for the developing embryo.
