Abstract
A 77-year-old man was presented with progressive consciousness disturbance, presumably caused by a backward fall. Head CT findings showed a large intracerebral hemorrhage in the left parietal lobe. Radiated fractures with an oval-shaped depression of the bilateral parietal bone crossing the midline were noted. Surgical evacuation of the hemorrhage was performed via a left-sided parietal craniotomy, during which fragments from the fracture with eggshell-like thinning were noted. Biparietal thinning is an uncommon condition noted in radiological findings of a symmetrical oval-shaped depression of bilateral parietal bones with reduced diploe thickness. Cases of traumatic brain injury in patients with biparietal thinning have rarely been reported. This condition should be recognized as a possible predisposing factor for traumatic brain injury.

Abstract
The hepatitis E virus (HEV) causes a common infectious disease that infects pigs, wild boars, deer, and humans. In most cases, humans are infected by eating raw meat. Some essential oils have been reported to exhibit antiviral activities. In this study, in order to investigate the anti-HEV properties of essential oils, the immunoreactivities of HEV antigen proteins against the relevant antibodies were analyzed after the HEV antigens underwent treatment with various essential oils. The essential oils extracted from the tea tree, which was previously reported to exhibit antiviral activity, lavender, and lemon had strongly reduced activity. We found that treatment with the essential oil prepared from Sakhalin spruce was associated with the strongest reduction in immunoreactivity of HEV antigen protein(s) among the tested substances. The main volatile constituents of Sakhalin spruce essential oil were found to be bornyl acetate (32.30 %), α-pinene (16.66 %), camphene (11.14 %), camphor (5.52 %), β-phellandrene (9.09 %), borneol (4.77 %), and limonene (4.57 %). The anti-HEV properties of the various components of the essential oils were examined: treatment with bornyl acetate, the main component of Sakhalin spruce oil, α-pinene, the main component of tea tree oil, and limonene, the main component of lemon oil, resulted in a strong reduction in HEV antigen immunoreactivity. These results indicate that each main component of the essential oils plays an important role in the reduction of the immunoreactivity of HEV antigen protein(s); they also suggest that Sakhalin spruce essential oil exhibits anti-HEV activity. In a formulation with the potential to eliminate the infectivity of HEV in foodborne infections, this essential oil can be applied as an inactivating agent for meat processing and cooking utensils, such as knives and chopping boards.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE MR imaging can reflect the pathologic progression of carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA). This study aimed to identify the imaging findings related to extracapsular invasion of CXPA. Additionally, the pathologic background of these findings was investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study included 37 patients with histologically confirmed CXPA. Three radiologists independently evaluated whether the CXPA showed the following characteristic MR imaging findings: border, capsule, the corona sign on fat-saturated T2WI and contrast-enhanced fat-saturated T1WI, and the black ring sign. The corona sign appeared larger on fat-saturated and/or contrast-enhanced fat-saturated T1WI than on T1WI. The black ring sign was defined as an intratumoral nodule with a thick low-intensity rim on T2WI. Interreader agreement of the visual assessment was performed using κ analysis, and MR imaging and histopathologic findings were also correlated. Kaplan-Meier survival and the log-rank test were used to estimate the 3-year disease-free survival. RESULTS MR imaging findings, especially peritumoral findings, showed a significant difference between invasive and noninvasive CXPA. The reliability was poor for the border and capsule. In contrast, it was good for the corona sign on fat-saturated and contrast-enhanced fat-saturated T1WI and the black ring sign. Pathologically, the corona sign reflected the invasiveness of the tumor and inflammatory cells, while the black ring sign reflected hyalinization or fibrosis. The corona sign also showed a significant difference in the 3-year disease-free survival. CONCLUSIONS MR imaging findings, including the corona and black ring signs, reliably differentiated invasive and noninvasive CXPA. The corona sign can be used as a prognostic factor for CXPA.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Many patients experience anxiety, not limited to claustrophobia, before magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination. We performed a non-randomized controlled trial to evaluate whether a patient-friendly audiovisual (AV) system in the MR scanner room reduces patient anxiety. METHODS We randomly selected 61 participants from outpatients who required brain MRI examination. Patients were informed that they could choose to undergo an MRI examination with a patient-friendly AV system (Ambient Experience, Philips Healthcare, Best, The Netherlands) or the standard system. To complete the MRI examination without affecting clinical practice, all patients who preferred the patient-friendly AV system were assigned to the preferring AV group. Patients who indicated that either system was acceptable were randomly assigned to the no preference but allocated AV group or control (using the standard system) groups. In both groups, state anxiety using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was assessed before and after the MRI examination (A-State-before and A-State-after MRI, respectively). The changes in A-State-before and A-State-after MRI were categorized as follows: relieved high-state anxiety, no change in high-state anxiety, stable easiness, and intensified anxiety. RESULTS Among the 61 included patients, 19 were assigned to the preferring AV group, 20 to the no preference but allocated AV group, and 22 to the control group. There were no significant differences between the group. However, in patients with high-state anxiety before MRI, the preferring AV group and the no preference but allocated AV group, which used the patient-friendly AV system, relieved high-state anxiety by 63.6% (7 of 11 patients) and 81.8% (9 of 11 patients), respectively. In contrast, the control group using the standard system relieved high-level anxiety by only 42.9% (three out of seven patients). CONCLUSION The patient-friendly AV system may reduce anxiety in patients undergoing MRI examinations. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE The patient-friendly AV system may reduce anxiety in patients undergoing MRI examination by providing a more patient-centered MRI examination environment. These findings may help ameliorate negative perceptions associated with MRI examination.

Abstract
Bisphenol A (BPA) has been shown to exhibit various toxic effects, including the induction of reproductive disorders. Generally, BPA is converted to conjugated metabolites, leading to bio-inactivation. On the other hand, the toxicity of conjugated metabolites is not fully understood. Notably, the placenta develops the sulfate-sulfatase pathway, which transports and reactivates sulfated steroids. Therefore, we investigated the potential adverse effects of the BPA-sulfate conjugate (BPA-S) on human placenta-derived BeWo cytotrophoblasts. In the present study, high-concentration BPA-S (100 μM) induced significant inhibition of BeWo growth, with effects similar to those seen with unconjugated BPA (100 μM and 100 nM). This growth inhibition was restored by treatment of the cells with an inhibitor of the organic anion-transporting peptides (OATPs) (bromosulphophthalein) or with a sulfatase (STS) inhibitor (STX64). BeWo exhibits expression of the genes encoding OATP1A2 and OATP4A1 as known sulfated steroid transporters and STS, suggesting that BPA-S suppresses cell growth activity via the sulfate-sulfatase pathway. In addition, cell cycle analysis revealed that BPA-S (100 μM) increased the fraction of cytotrophoblasts in the G2/M phases and significantly decreased the accumulation of the transcript encoding Aurora kinase A (AURKA), which is a critical regulator of cellular division. These results suggested that BPA-S triggers cell cycle arrest and inhibits proliferation of BeWo cytotrophoblasts by decreased AURKA, an effect that is mediated by the sulfate-sulfatase pathway. Overall, these findings provide insights into the reactivation of sulfated endocrine-disrupting chemicals and subsequent adverse effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Prognostic factors of stroke-like migraine attacks after radiation therapy (SMART) syndrome have not been fully explored. This study aimed to assess clinical and imaging features to predict the clinical outcome of SMART syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the clinical manifestations and imaging findings of 20 patients with SMART syndrome (median age, 48 years; 5 women) from January 2016 to January 2020 at 4 medical centers. Patient demographics and MR imaging features at the time of diagnosis were reviewed. This cohort was divided into 2 groups based on the degree of clinical improvement (completely versus incompletely recovered). The numeric and categoric variables were compared as appropriate. RESULTS There were statistically significant differences between the completely recovered group (n = 11; median age, 44 years; 2 women) and the incompletely recovered group (n = 9; median age, 55 years; 3 women) in age, months of follow-up, and the presence of steroid treatment at diagnosis (P = .028, .002, and .01, respectively). Regarding MR imaging features, there were statistically significant differences in the presence of linear subcortical WM susceptibility abnormality, restricted diffusion, and subcortical WM edematous changes in the acute SMART region (3/11 versus 8/9, P = .01; 0/11 versus 4/9, P = .026; and 2/11 versus 7/9, P = .022, respectively). Follow-up MRIs showed persistent susceptibility abnormality (11/11) and subcortical WM edematous changes (9/9), with resolution of restricted diffusion (4/4). CONCLUSIONS Age, use of steroid treatment at the diagnosis of SMART syndrome, and MR imaging findings of abnormal susceptibility signal, restricted diffusion, and subcortical WM change in the acute SMART region can be prognostic factors in SMART syndrome.

Abstract
Testicular steroidogenesis is depressed by adrenal-secreted corticosterone (CORT) under stress. However, the mechanisms are not well understood. This study investigated the details of testicular steroidogenesis depression during fasting. Blood levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone secreted from the pituitary glands increased, but blood CORT was not changed in rats that fasted for 96 h, in spite of the rats being severely stressed. CORT in fasting adult male rats increased more than three times in the testis, but reduced testicular testosterone (T) and blood T levels to 5% and 2% of the control, respectively, was observed. The contents of T precursor (except PGN) were drastically reduced in the fasted-rat testes. Testicular CORT levels were elevated, but the enzymatic activity of cytochrome P45011β, which produces CORT, remained unchanged. The enzymatic activities of 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD), mediating the conversion of pregnenolone to progesterone, decreased in the fasted-rat testes. Thus, fasting suppressed testicular steroidogenesis by affecting the enzyme activity of 3β-HSD in the testes and drastically reduced T and increased CORT synthesis. It can be considered that T synthesis involved in cell proliferation is suppressed due to lack of energy during fasting. Conversely, 11β-hydroxylase enzyme activity was induced and CORT synthesis is increased to cope with the fasting stress. Hence, it can be concluded that CORT synthesis in the testes plays a role in the local defense response.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Hypertension may be related to alterations of the glymphatic system, a waste metabolite drainage system in the brain. We aimed to investigate analysis along the perivascular space index changes in elderly subjects with hypertension. MATERIALS AND METHODS Diffusion-weighted images were acquired from 126 subjects, including 63 subjects with hypertension (25 men and 38 women; mean age, 72.45 years) and 63 age- and sex-matched controls (25 men and 38 women; mean age, 72.16 years). We calculated the analysis along the perivascular space index as a ratio of the mean of x-axis diffusivities in the projection and association areas to the mean of y-axis diffusivity in the projection area and z-axis diffusivity in the association area. The left, right, and mean analysis along the perivascular space indices of both hemispheres were compared between the hypertension and control groups using a Mann-Whitney U test. The Spearman correlation coefficient was used to assess the correlation between the left, right, and mean ALPS indices and blood pressure and pulse pressure. RESULTS The left (P = .011) and mean (P = .024) analysis along the perivascular space indices of the hypertension group were significantly lower than that of the control group. The left, right, and mean analysis along the perivascular space indices of all subjects were significantly negatively correlated with blood pressure values (r = -0.200 to -0.278, P = .002-0.046) and pulse pressure values (r = -0.221 to -0.245, P = .006-0.013). CONCLUSIONS Our results are consistent with a model in which hypertension causes glymphatic dysfunction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Selective voluntary motor control is an important factor influencing gross motor function, interjoint coordination, and the outcome of hamstring-lengthening surgery in spastic cerebral palsy. Using DTI, we investigated whether selective voluntary motor control would show strong correlations with WM motor tract microstructure and whether selective voluntary motor control is more sensitive to global WM impairment than gross motor function. MATERIALS AND METHODS Children with spastic bilateral cerebral palsy born preterm and typically developing children were recruited. The Selective Control Assessment of the Lower Extremity (SCALE) and Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM) were assessed in participants with cerebral palsy. Participants underwent brain MR imaging to collect DWI data. Tract-Based Spatial Statistics was used to analyze the WM for between-group differences and correlations with SCALE and GMFM. ROI analyses compared motor regions. RESULTS Twelve children with cerebral palsy (mean age, 11.5 years) and 12 typically developing children (mean age, 10.3 years) participated. Altered DTI outcomes were found throughout the whole brain for the cerebral palsy group. SCALE, developed to evaluate selective voluntary motor control in cerebral palsy, showed significant positive correlations with fractional anisotropy in more WM voxels throughout the whole brain and for motor regions, including the corticospinal tract and corpus callosum, compared with GMFM. A significant negative correlation between radial diffusivity and SCALE, but not GMFM, was found within the corpus callosum. CONCLUSIONS SCALE was a more sensitive clinical correlate of motor and whole-brain WM tract impairment in children with spastic bilateral cerebral palsy, suggesting greater anisotropy and myelination in these regions for those with higher selective voluntary motor control.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The authors aim to focus on lumbosacral subdural hematoma (SDH) associated with cranial subdural hematoma and craniocerebral surgery, which has been rarely reported. MATERIAL AND METHODS They present 3 cases of lumbosacral SDH, including 2 associated with cranial chronic SDH and 1 following craniotomy for neck clipping of cerebral aneurysm. Using a PubMed search, they also provide a systemic literature review to summarize pathogenesis, treatment and outcome. RESULTS All cases presented with bilateral radiating leg pain, and recovered completely by conservative managements. Predisposing factors were trauma, anticoagulant therapy and brain atrophy. Literature review revealed 54 such cases, in which 28 cases associated with cranial SDH and 26 cases associated with craniocerebral surgery. In both group, main symptoms were low back and radiating leg pain, and sensorimotor deficits. Regardless of treatments, conservatively or surgically, outcome was favorable. Migration of cranial hematoma is most supported pathogenesis, while intracranial hypotension due to cerebrospinal fluid overdrainage procedures may also be a contributing factor for cases associated with craniocerebral surgery. CONCLUSIONS Lumbosacral SDH should be considered in patients present with unexpected low back and radiating leg pains associated with cranial SDH and craniocerebral surgery. Conservative treatment would be reasonable for cases with mild symptoms as the first treatment of choice.

Abstract
Cranioplasty complications after decompressive craniectomy (DC) in infants are not fully recognized. We aimed to devise and assess the efficacy of a hinge and floating DC (HFDC) technique for treating infantile acute subdural hematoma. Five infants, aged 2-20 months, were included. Intracranial pressure was controlled below 20 mmHg, no additional surgery was required, and there was no incidence of surgical site infection or bone graft resorption.

Abstract
Waste fishing nets were utilized as recycled nylon (RN) short fiber to improve the mechanical properties of cement mortar. RN and manufactured polyethylene (PE) fibers were added to polymer cement mortar (PCM) as a reinforcement, and fiber-reinforced PCM was sprayed on the section of reinforced concrete (RC) beams. Normal RC beams and the upgraded RC beams were placed in the tidal zone for 14 months to induce rebar corrosion. Consequently, a repair operation took place by the removal of the concrete cover then spraying fiber-reinforced PCM. The tested RC beams were subjected to four-point flexural tests to study their load-carrying capacity. It was found that the fibers helped transfer stresses through cracks and distribute stresses by transforming a single wide crack into many small cracks. Overall, the experimental results showed that recycled nylon fibers from waste fishing nets have great potential to be used as a strengthening fiber in cementitious material.

Abstract
Time-lapse confocal fluorescence microscopy images from mouse embryonic stem cells (ESCs) carrying reporter genes, histone H2B-mCherry and Mvh-Venus, have been used to monitor dynamic changes in cellular/differentiation characteristics of live ESCs. Accurate cell nucleus segmentation is required to analyse the ESC dynamics and differentiation at a single cell resolution. Several methods used concavities on nucleus contours to segment overlapping cell nuclei. Our proposed method evaluates not only the concavities but also the size and shape of every 2D nucleus region to determine if any of the strait, extrusion, convexity and large diameter criteria is satisfied to segment overlapping nuclei inside the region. We then use a 3D segmentation method to reconstruct simple, convex, and reasonably sized 3D nuclei along the image stacking direction using the radius and centre of every segmented region in respective microscopy images. To avoid false concavities on nucleus boundaries, fluorescence images of the H2B-mCherry reporter are used for localisation of cell nuclei and Venus fluorescence images are used for determining the cell colony ranges. We use a series of image preprocessing procedures to remove noise outside and inside cell colonies, and in respective nuclei, and to smooth nucleus boundaries based on the colony ranges. We propose dynamic data structures to record every segmented nucleus region and solid in sets (volumes) of 3D confocal images. The experimental results show that the proposed image preprocessing method preserves the areas of mouse ESC nuclei on microscopy images and that the segmentation method effectively segment out every nucleus with a reasonable size and shape. All 3D nuclei in a set (volume) of confocal microscopy images can be accessed by the dynamic data structures for 3D reconstruction. The 3D nuclei in time-lapse confocal microscopy images can be tracked to calculate cell movement and proliferation in consecutive volumes for understanding the dynamics of the differentiation characteristics about ESCs. LAY DESCRIPTION: Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) are considered as an ideal source for basic cell biology study and producing medically useful cells in vitro. This study uses time-lapse confocal fluorescence microscopy images from mouse ESCs carrying reporter gene to monitor dynamic changes in cellular/differentiation characteristics of live ESCs. To automate analyses of ESC differentiation behaviours, accurate cell nucleus segmentation to distinguish respective cells are required. A series of image preprocessing procedures are implemented to remove noise in live-cell fluorescence images but yield overlapping cell nuclei. A segmentation method that evaluates boundary concavities and the size and shape of every nucleus is then used to determine if any of the strait, extrusion, convexity, large and local minimum diameter criteria satisfied to segment overlapping nuclei. We propose a dynamic data structure to record every newly segmented nucleus. The experimental results show that the proposed image preprocessing method preserves the areas of mouse ESC nuclei and that the segmentation method effectively detects overlapping nuclei. All segmented nuclei in confocal images can be accessed using the dynamic data structures to be visualised and manipulated for quantitative analyses of the ESC differentiation behaviours. The manipulation can be tracking of segmented 3D cell nuclei in time-lapse images to calculate their dynamics of differentiation characteristics.

Abstract
Adrenal corticosterone plays crucial roles in energy metabolism and immuno-reactivity throughout the body. As we have previously shown that corticosterone biosynthesis in C2C12 myoblasts, we study about corticosterone biosynthesis in rat skeletal muscles. It was found that enzymatic activities producing corticosterone and testosterone except the activity of P450scc in rat skeletal muscle as like as C2C12 cells. The CYP11B mRNA encoding cytochrome P45011β that mediates 11-deoxycorticosterone hydroxylase activity, producing corticosterone was expressed in skeletal muscles. In immunoblotting analysis, cytochrome P45011β protein was expressed in rat muscles and whole organs especially higher levels in adrenal and brain. The localizations of corticosterone content and enzymatic activities involved in the production of corticosterone were preferentially observed in gastrocnemius fibers rather than in soleus fibers. The immunohistochemical analysis showed that the fast-twitch or type II muscle fibers positive to antibody against fast myosin heavy chain were preferentially stained with anti-cytochrome P45011β antibody in the gastrocnemius fiber. In addition, we detected corticosterone biosynthesis from pregnenolone sulfate conjugates in perfusion of the rat hindquarter. Corticosterone is synthesized in rat skeletal muscles and the biosynthesis was localized in the fast-twitch or type II muscle fibers. We speculated that the local synthesized corticosterone might be involved in glucocorticoid-induced muscle atrophy that preferentially occurs in fast muscle fibers, and the initial substrate of the local CORT biosynthesis were supported to be performed from the conjugates such as pregnenolone sulfate circulating in the blood flow.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Communicating syringomyelia can develop in association with hydrocephalus, with communication between syringomyelia and the fourth ventricle a representative neuroimaging finding. CASE DESCRIPTION A 51-year-old woman presented with slowly progressive bladder dysfunction and scoliosis. She had a nonfunctioning cerebrospinal fluid shunt that had been placed after birth for neonatal hydrocephalus. Tetraventricular enlargement and a holocord syrinx were noted in neuroimaging findings, while phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging and ventriculography revealed communication between the syrinx and fourth ventricle via a dilated central canal. Placement of a de novo ventriculoperitoneal shunt led to collapse of the syringomyelia, though apparent improvement of clinical symptoms was not obtained. CONCLUSIONS Communicating syringomyelia can develop as a late complication in patients with shunted hydrocephalus. In the majority of reported cases, shunt revision has been shown to be effective, though some cases require posterior fossa decompression and exploration.

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) on dose distribution and normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) by constructing a comprehensive dose evaluation system for prostate intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). Methods: A system that could combine CBCT and treatment doses with MATLAB was constructed. Twenty patients treated with prostate IMRT were studied. A mean dose of 78 Gy was prescribed to the prostate region, excluding the rectal volume from the target volume, with margins of 4 mm to the dorsal side of the prostate and 7 mm to the entire circumference. CBCT and treatment doses were combined, and the dose distribution and the NTCP of the rectum and bladder were evaluated. Results: The radiation dose delivered to 2% and 98% of the target volume increased by 0.90 and 0.74 Gy on average, respectively, in the half-fan mode and on average 0.76 and 0.72 Gy, respectively, in the full-fan mode. The homogeneity index remained constant. The percent volume of the rectum and bladder irradiated at each dose increased slightly, with a maximum increase of <1%. The rectal NTCP increased by approximately 0.07% from 0.46% to 0.53% with the addition of a CBCT dose, while the maximum NTCP in the bladder was approximately 0.02%. Conclusions: This study demonstrated a method to evaluate a combined dose of CBCT and a treatment dose using the constructed system. The combined dose distribution revealed increases of <1% volume in the rectal and bladder doses and approximately 0.07% in the rectal NTCP.

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of variable relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of proton beam and dose fractionation has on dose distribution and to establish a new three-dimensional dose evaluation method for proton therapy combined with high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy. Materials and Methods: To evaluate the influence of variable RBE and dose fractionation on dose distribution in proton beam therapy, the depth-dose distribution of proton therapy was compared with clinical dose, RBE-weighted dose, and equivalent dose in 2 Gy fractions using a linear-quadratic-linear model (EQD2LQL). The clinical dose was calculated by multiplying the physical dose by RBE of 1.1. The RBE-weighted dose is a biological dose that takes into account RBE variation calculated by microdosimetric kinetic model implemented in Monte Carlo code. The EQD2LQL is a biological dose that makes the RBE-weighted dose equivalent to 2 Gy using a linear-quadratic-linear (LQL) model. Finally, we evaluated the three-dimensional dose by taking into account RBE variation and LQL model for proton therapy combined with HDR brachytherapy. Results: The RBE-weighted dose increased at the distal of the spread-out Bragg peak (SOBP). With the difference in the dose fractionation taken into account, the EQD2LQL at the distal of the SOBP increased more than the RBE-weighted dose. In proton therapy combined with HDR brachytherapy, a divergence of 103% or more was observed between the conventional dose estimation method and the dose estimation method we propose. Conclusions: Our dose evaluation method can evaluate the EQD2LQL considering RBE changes in the dose distribution.

Abstract
Endoscopic image diagnosis assisted by machine learning is useful for reducing misdetection and interobserver variability. Although many results have been reported, few effective methods are available to automatically detect early gastric cancer. Early gastric cancer have poor morphological features, which implies that automatic detection methods can be extremely difficult to construct. In this study, we proposed a convolutional neural network-based automatic detection scheme to assist the diagnosis of early gastric cancer in endoscopic images. We performed transfer learning using two classes (cancer and normal) of image datasets that have detailed texture information on lesions derived from a small number of annotated images. The accuracy of our trained network was 87.6%, and the sensitivity and specificity were well balanced, which is important for future practical use. We also succeeded in presenting a candidate region of early gastric cancer as a heat map of unknown images. The detection accuracy was 82.8%. This means that our proposed scheme may offer substantial assistance to endoscopists in decision making.

Abstract
Diethylstilbestrol (DES) is a synthetic oestrogen known to disrupt the endocrine system and to cause reproductive toxicity mediated via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis; however, its molecular mechanism of action is poorly understood. In the present study, we found that, after only 1 week of exposure to DES, blood testosterone dramatically decreased and that this decrease was associated with a strong induction of prolactin (PRL). Even with the increase in PRL, the luteinising hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone mRNAs slightly decreased. Our results show that, after 48 hours of a single dose of DES, there was a six-fold increase in PRL expression. After exploring the upstream mechanisms, we determined that dopamine, which inhibits PRL secretion in male rats, did not decrease in the pituitary gland of DES-treated rats, whereas vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), which mediates the acute release of PRL, was elevated. Serotonin (5-HT) increased in the brain of male rats 24 hours after a single DES treatment; however, PRL, VIP or 5-HT was not induced by DES in female rats. Our results indicate that DES induces the expression of pituitary PRL in male rats by stimulating VIP in the hypothalamus and 5-HT in the central nervous system.

Abstract
Background Visual evoked potential (VEP) is used as a means of intraoperative visual function monitoring. It remains unclear, however, whether intraoperative VEP monitoring is a means of real-time visual function monitoring that has satisfactory effectiveness and sensitivity. To evaluate this, the relationships between VEP waveform changes in endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery and postoperative visual function were analyzed retrospectively. Materials and Methods Intraoperative VEP monitoring was carried out during 82 endoscopic transnasal transsphenoidal surgeries for 164 eyes at Nara Medical University Hospital, Nara, Japan under total intravenous anesthesia. Red light flash stimulation was provided to each eye independently. The VEP recording and postoperative visual function were then analyzed. Results In 160 of 164 eyes (98%), steady VEP monitoring was performed. Stable VEP was acquired from eyes with a corrected visual acuity >0.1. VEP was not recorded in four eyes that had a corrected visual acuity under 0.05. A transient VEP decrease was observed in 26 eyes, 8 of which had improved visual acuity and 18 of which had no change in visual acuity. A permanent gradual VEP decrease occurred in eight eyes; this finding did not correspond to a change in visual function. The visual acuity of the patients who underwent the transsphenoidal operation in our study did not worsen. Conclusion Intraoperative monitoring of VEP predicts postoperative visual function, and a reversible change in VEP indicates that visual function will be preserved. Intraoperative VEP monitoring will be mandatory for surgeries harboring a risk of visual impairment.

Abstract
PURPOSE We present the potential usefulness of a greenstick fracture-hinge decompressive craniotomy, a variant of a hinge-craniotomy, as an alternative technique for use with a decompressive craniectomy (DC) in infants. A literature review of hinge-craniotomy procedures and technical variants is also provided, with a focus on complications associated with a DC peculiar to infants and children. METHODS Illustrative case presentation along with literature review. RESULT Significant rates of complications associated with a DC and subsequent cranioplasty have been reported, such as bone flap resorption, hydrocephalus, cerebrospinal fluid collection, and infection, especially in infants. A hinge-craniotomy is an older technique reported to have potential usefulness with some modifications, though concerns have been raised about adequate decompression and definitive indications. CONCLUSION A DC procedure performed in children, especially infants, includes a significantly high risk of various complications; thus, a hinge-craniotomy technique is worthwhile for consideration to avoid such complications. Additional studies are required to clarify whether this technique may contribute to reduce complications related to a DC in infants and children.

Abstract
Cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome (CHS) is a serious complication following carotid artery stenting (CAS), but definitive early prediction of CHS has not been established. Here, we evaluated whether indocyanine green kinetics and near-infrared spectroscopy (ICG-NIRS) with hyperventilation (HV) and the breath-holding (BH) test can predict hyperperfusion phenomenon after CAS. The blood flow index (BFI) ratio during HV and BH was prospectively monitored using ICG-NIRS in 66 patients scheduled to undergo CAS. Preoperative cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) and the postoperative asymmetry index (AI) were also assessed with single-photon emission computed tomography before and after CAS and the correlation with the BFI HV/rest ratio, BFI BH/rest ratio was evaluated. Twelve cases (18%) showed hyperperfusion phenomenon, and one (1.5%) showed CHS after CAS. A significant linear correlation was observed between the BFI HV/rest ratio, BFI BH/rest ratio, and preoperative CVR. A significant linear correlation was observed between the BFI HV/rest ratio and postoperative AI (r = 0.674, P < 0.0001). A BFI HV/rest ratio of 0.88 or more was the optimal cut-off point to predict hyperperfusion phenomenon according to receiver operating characteristic curve analyses. HV and BH test under ICG-NIRS is a useful tool for detection of hyperperfusion phenomenon in patients who underwent CAS.

Abstract
Extra-adrenal steroid hormone production has been reported in several tissues, the biological role of which is interesting in terms of hormonal regulation of metabolism, growth, and behavior. In this report, we describe for the first time steroidogenesis in rat salivary glands. Enzyme activities associated with corticosterone and testosterone production were detected in rat salivary glands by LC-MS analysis. In tissue homogenates of rat salivary glands, progesterone was produced enzymatically in vitro from pregnenolone in the presence of NADPH and NADH. Deoxycorticosterone was produced from progesterone, corticosterone from deoxycorticosterone, and testosterone from androstenedione (but not pregnenolone from cholesterol) via enzymatic reactions using the same tissue homogenates. Immunoblotting analysis indicated the expression of 11β-hydroxylase (cytochrome P450 11β1; CYP11β1), which mediated the production of corticosterone from deoxycorticosterone. However, CYP family 11 subfamily A member 1 (CYP11A1)-mediated production of pregnenolone from cholesterol was not detected in the salivary glands by immunoblotting using a specific antibody. These results indicate that corticosterone and testosterone are produced from pregnenolone in rat salivary glands. The initial substrate in salivary steroidogenesis and the roles of salivary corticosterone and testosterone are discussed.

Abstract
Arsenic decontamination of drinking water has grabbed significant attention due to arsenic's serious effects on health. A novel gravel-sand filter (GSF) holding zero-valent iron plates was designed and constructed in Muzaffargarh district (Pakistan) for arsenic removal from drinking water with lower iron concentration (0.3 ppm). The GSF efficiently removed arsenic up to 99.99% with long-term stability. The GSF provides 800 liters of arsenic-free drinking water in 39 hours with a rate of 2.5 L/h. A tentative mechanism for arsenic removal is evaluated and described on the basis of oxidation-coagulation-adsorption processes. Chemical composition of underground water is also analyzed and discussed. This GSF design will open a new avenue for arsenic removal and can be extended to other parts of the world.

Abstract
Corticosterone (CORT), the major glucocorticoid in rodents, is secreted from the adrenal gland, affects various organs in the body and regulates energy metabolism as a stress response. Although local steroidogenesis of androgens and estrogens in skeletal muscles has been previously reported, local CORT synthesis in skeletal muscle remains unconfirmed. In the present study, we investigated steroidogenic activities in a clonal myoblastic cell line, C2C12 cells. Three enzymes involved in CORT synthesis, 3ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3ß-HSD), cytochrome P450c21 and cytochrome P45011ß, were identified in C2C12 cells by detecting the enzymatic reaction products with LC-MS/MS analysis. Only one enzyme that mediates cholesterol cleavage was not detected in the cells. After the addition of pregnenolone-sulfate conjugates to the cell culture medium, pregnenolone was detected and increased according to the incubation time. In conclusion, CORT synthesis occurs in C2C12 cells, and it is suggested that the initial steroidogenesis substrate is the pregnenolone-sulfate conjugate.

Abstract
OBJECTIVELumbar spinal drainage (LSD) during neurosurgery can have an important effect by facilitating a smooth procedure when needed. However, LSD is quite invasive, and the pathology of brain herniation associated with LSD has become known recently. The objective of this study was to determine the risk of postoperative brain herniation after craniotomy with LSD in neurosurgery overall.METHODSIncluded were 239 patients who underwent craniotomy with LSD for various types of neurological diseases between January 2007 and December 2016. The authors performed propensity score matching to establish a proper control group taken from among 1424 patients who underwent craniotomy and met the inclusion criteria during the same period. The incidences of postoperative brain herniation between the patients who underwent craniotomy with LSD (group A, n = 239) and the matched patients who underwent craniotomy without LSD (group B, n = 239) were compared.RESULTSBrain herniation was observed in 24 patients in group A and 8 patients in group B (OR 3.21, 95% CI 1.36-8.46, p = 0.005), but the rate of favorable outcomes was higher in group A (OR 1.79, 95% CI 1.18-2.76, p = 0.005). Of the 24 patients, 18 had uncal herniation, 5 had central herniation, and 1 had uncal and subfalcine herniation; 8 patients with other than subarachnoid hemorrhage were included. Significant differences in the rates of deep approach (OR 5.12, 95% CI 1.8-14.5, p = 0.002) and temporal craniotomy (OR 10.2, 95% CI 2.3-44.8, p = 0.002) were found between the 2 subgroups (those with and those without herniation) in group A. In 5 patients, brain herniation proceeded even after external decompression (ED). Cox regression analysis revealed that the risk of brain herniation related to LSD increased with ED (hazard ratio 3.326, 95% CI 1.491-7.422, p < 0.001). Among all 1424 patients, ED resulted in progression or deterioration of brain herniation more frequently in those who underwent LSD than it did in those who did not undergo LSD (OR 9.127, 95% CI 1.82-62.1, p = 0.004).CONCLUSIONSBrain herniation downward to the tentorial hiatus is more likely to occur after craniotomy with LSD than after craniotomy without LSD. Using a deep approach and craniotomy involving the temporal areas are risk factors for brain herniation related to LSD. Additional ED would aggravate brain herniation after LSD. The risk of brain herniation after placement of a lumbar spinal drain during neurosurgery must be considered even when LSD is essential.

Abstract
Bisphenol A (BPA) is among the better-known endocrine disruptors. BPA is used in various food-contacting materials and is easily eluted into food; as a result, we are exposed to BPA on a daily basis. In adults, BPA is
metabolized and eliminated rapidly from the body. However, numerous reports suggest that fetuses and young children are susceptible to BPA. One of the concerning adverse effects of BPA is disruption of behavior,
especially anxiety-like behavior. In order to study the mechanism of influences on offspring, it is important to clarify the most vulnerable gestation period. We hypothesized that offspring in late pregnancy would be
more susceptible to BPA, because late pregnancy is a critical time for functional brain development. In this study, C57BL/6 mouse fetuses were exposed prenatally by oral dosing of pregnant dams, once daily from
gestational day 5.5 to 12.5 (early pregnancy) or 11.5 to 18.5 (late pregnancy), with BPA (0 or 10 mg/kg body weight). Following birth and weaning, the resulting pups were tested using an elevated plus maze at postnatal
week 10. The behavior of the offspring was altered by prenatal BPA exposure during late pregnancy but not during early pregnancy. These results indicated that offspring are more vulnerable to exposure to BPA in late
pregnancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Recent studies have strongly associated intracranial aneurysm growth with increased risk of rupture. Identifying aneurysms that are likely to grow would be beneficial to plan more effective monitoring and intervention strategies. Our hypothesis is that for unruptured intracranial aneurysms of similar size, morphologic characteristics differ between aneurysms that continue to grow and those that do not. MATERIALS AND METHODS From aneurysms in our medical center with follow-up imaging dates in 2015, ninety-three intracranial aneurysms (23 growing, 70 stable) were selected. All CTA images for the aneurysm diagnosis and follow-up were collected, a total of 348 3D imaging studies. Aneurysm 3D geometry for each imaging study was reconstructed, and morphologic characteristics, including volume, surface area, nonsphericity index, aspect ratio, and size ratio were calculated. RESULTS Morphologic characteristics were found to differ between growing and stable groups. For aneurysms of <3 mm, nonsphericity index (P < .001); 3-5 mm, nonsphericity index (P < .001); 5-7 mm, size ratio (P = .003); >7 mm, volume (P < .001); surface area (P < .001); and nonsphericity index (P = .002) were significant. Within the anterior communicating artery, the nonsphericity index (P = .008) and, within the posterior communicating artery, size ratio (P = .004) were significant. The nonsphericity index receiver operating characteristic area under the curve was 0.721 for discriminating growing and stable cases on the basis of initial images. CONCLUSIONS Among aneurysms with similar sizes, morphologic characteristics appear to differ between those that are growing and those that are stable. The nonsphericity index, in particular, was found to be higher among growing aneurysms. The size ratio was found to be the second most significant parameter associated with growth.

Abstract
Bovine mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary gland caused by bacterial infection in dairy cattle. It is the most costly disease in the dairy industry because of the high use of antibiotics. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the major causative agents of bovine mastitis and antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, new strategies to control bacterial infection are required in the dairy industry. One potential strategy is bacteriophage (phage) therapy. In the present study, we examined the host range of previously isolated S. aureus phages ΦSA012 and ΦSA039 against S. aureus strains isolated from mastitic cows. These phages could kill all S. aureus (93 strains from 40 genotypes) and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (six strains from six genotypes) strains tested. Using a mouse mastitis model, we demonstrated that ΦSA012 reduced proliferation of S. aureus and inflammation in the mammary gland. Furthermore, intravenous or intraperitoneal phage administration reduced proliferation of S. aureus in the mammary glands. These results suggest that broad host range phages ΦSA012 is potential antibacterial agents for dairy production medicine.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the concentration of trace elements in the
plasma of sea turtles that inhabited the suburban (Okinawa Main Island, n=8) and the rural
coast (Yaeyama Island, n=57) in Okinawa, Japan. Particle induced X-ray emission allowed
detection of 20 trace and major elements. The wild sea turtles in the suburban coast in
Okinawa were found to have high concentrations of Pb, Si and Ti in the plasma when
compared to the rural area but there were no significant changes in the Al, As and Hg
concentrations. These results may help to suggest the status of some elements in a marine
environment. Further, monitoring the plasma trace and major element status in sea turtles
can be used as a bio-monitoring approach by which specific types of elements found here
could indicate effects that are related to human activities.

Abstract
Currently, given the concerns regarding animal welfare, it is required that anesthesia or
analgesia be used during surgery in experimental animals. Therefore, it is important to
understand how anesthesia affects the health conditions of experimental animals. In this
study, rat blood biochemistry and hematological changes were examined following
administration of a mixture of three anesthetic agents—medetomidine, midazolam and
butorphanol (MMB). One of three MMB dose combinations was subcutaneously administered to
rats. After 1 hr, rats were treated with atipamezole, to reverse the anesthetic effects.
Blood biochemistry and hematological parameters were assessed at 1, 4 and 24 hr post-MMB
treatment. We also recorded body weight and food intake at 0, 2, 4, 6 and 24 hr post-MMB
administration. Following MMB administration, transient increases were observed in glucose
(GLUC) levels, hematocrit (HCT) values and hemoglobin (HGB) levels, whereas transient
decreases were observed in total protein (TP) content and white blood cell (WBC) counts.
Most of these parameters returned to control values 24 hr following MMB administration.
Additionally, body weight and food intake decreased in MMB-treated rats. In conclusion,
intermediate and high doses of MMB changed some blood biochemistry and hematological
parameters, body weight and food intake. In contrast, low-dose MMB did not cause these
effects. Therefore, depending on the experimental design, MMB may influence the results of
studies that use laboratory animals. Consequently, anesthetic agents used in laboratory
animals should be chosen based on detailed knowledge of their pharmacological effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The superior cervical ganglion and inferior ganglion of the vagus nerve can mimic pathologic retropharyngeal lymph nodes. We studied the cross-sectional anatomy of the superior cervical ganglion and inferior ganglion of the vagus nerve to evaluate how they can be differentiated from the retropharyngeal lymph nodes. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study consists of 2 parts. Cohort 1 concerned the signal intensity of routine neck MR imaging with 2D sequences, apparent diffusion coefficient, and contrast enhancement of the superior cervical ganglion compared with lymph nodes with or without metastasis in 30 patients. Cohort 2 used 3D neurography to assess the morphology and spatial relationships of the superior cervical ganglion, inferior ganglion of the vagus nerve, and the retropharyngeal lymph nodes in 50 other patients. RESULTS All superior cervical ganglions had homogeneously greater enhancement and lower signal on diffusion-weighted imaging than lymph nodes. Apparent diffusion coefficient values of the superior cervical ganglion (1.80 ± 0.28 × 10-3mm2/s) were significantly higher than normal and metastatic lymph nodes (0.86 ± 0.10 × 10-3mm2/s, P < .001, and 0.73 ± 0.10 × 10-3mm2/s, P < .001). Ten and 13 of 60 superior cervical ganglions were hypointense on T2-weighted images and had hyperintense spots on both T1- and T2-weighted images, respectively. The latter was considered fat tissue. The largest was the superior cervical ganglion, followed in order by the retropharyngeal lymph node and the inferior ganglion of the vagus nerve (P < .001 to P = .004). The highest at vertebral level was the retropharyngeal lymph nodes, followed, in order, by the inferior ganglion of the vagus nerve and the superior cervical ganglion (P < .001 to P = .001). The retropharyngeal lymph node, superior cervical ganglion, and inferior ganglion of the vagus nerve formed a line from anteromedial to posterolateral. CONCLUSIONS The superior cervical ganglion and the inferior ganglion of the vagus nerve can be almost always differentiated from retropharyngeal lymph nodes on MR imaging by evaluating the signal, size, and position.

Abstract
A 14-year-old boy experienced sudden headache in the left parietal region, without any history of head trauma. Approximately 40 ml of hematoma was aspirated using a 22-gauge needle, and scalp swelling immediately disappeared. However, the swelling recurred bilaterally 2 weeks later. Left external carotid angiography revealed a reticular shadow consistent with subgaleal hematoma from a branch of bilateral superficial temporal arteries, without any arteriovenous shunts. The patient was successfully treated using the combination of hematoma aspiration and embolization of the superficial temporal artery. The combination of aspiration of hematoma and embolization may be effective for refractory non-traumatic subgaleal hematoma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neurosurgical application of indocyanine green (ICG) videography before performing a dural opening, known as transdural ICG videography, has been used during surgery of meningiomas associated with venous sinuses as well as cranial and spinal arteriovenous malformations. However, its use for a superficial temporal artery (STA)-to-middle cerebral artery (MCA) bypass has not been reported. METHODS We performed a retrospective analysis of medical records of patients who underwent transdural ICG videography during STA-MCA bypass performed between January 2012 and March 2015. The primary outcome was visualization of recipient cortical arteries; secondary outcomes were surgical modifications and complications as well as any adverse events associated with transdural ICG videography. RESULTS We analyzed 29 STA-MCA bypass procedures performed in 30 hemispheres with atherosclerotic steno-occlusive disease and found that the proper recipient was identified in 28 hemispheres. Subsequently modified procedures for those were a tailored dural incision and craniotomy correction. No complications associated with ICG administration were encountered; during the postoperative course, transient aphasia was noted in 1 case, chronic subdural hematoma was noted in 1 case, and subdural effusion was noted in 2 cases. CONCLUSIONS Transdural ICG videography for atherosclerotic steno-occlusive disease facilitates modifications during STA-MCA bypass procedures. Recognition of the proper recipient cortical arteries before a dural incision allows the neurosurgeon to perform a tailored dural incision and extension of the bone window, although the contribution to surgical outcome has yet to be determined.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to examine the applicability of the direct determination of trace and major element concentrations in serum samples collected from Holstein dairy cattle with acute coliform mastitis (n = 53) compared with a healthy control group (n = 39). Twenty-eight elements (Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ce, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Se, Br, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, and Pb) were detected by particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE). Significant differences were observed in serum K, Fe, Zn, and Br concentrations, but not in those of the remaining twenty-four elements. Furthermore, serum Fe concentrations (0.751 ± 0.583 μg/ml, n = 18) were significantly lower in dairy cattle with a poor prognosis than in those with a good prognosis (0.945 ± 0.393 μg/ml, n = 35, P < 0.05) and healthy controls (1.458 ± 0.391 μg/ml, n = 39, P < 0.01). We proposed a diagnostic cut-off point for serum Fe concentrations of <0.82 μg/ml based on receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves in order to identify cattle with a poor prognosis. The results of the present study indicated that assessing the elemental composition of serum, particularly iron, is a promising prognostic tool for determining the outcomes of cattle with severe acute coliform mastitis.

Abstract
Bisphenol A (BPA), a well-known endocrine disruptor, is metabolized and eliminated rapidly from the body in adult animals. However, many authors have reported that perinatal BPA exposure alters development of the brain, reproductive system and behavior in the next generation. Recently, BPA substitutes, especially bisphenol F (BPF), have been used because of concerns about the influence of BPA on children, although the actual effects on the next generation are unknown. In this study, we observed behavioral adverse effects of the offspring of mice exposed to BPA or BPF in fetal period. Female C57BL/6 mice were given oral BPA or BPF (0 or 10 mg/kg body weight) daily from gestational day 11.5 to 18.5. The open field test, the elevated plus maze test and the forced swim test were performed at postnatal week 10. BPF exposure altered offspring behavior significantly, resulting in increases in anxiety and depressive state. The influence of BPF was stronger than that of BPA. We demonstrated novel evidence that BPF influences the behavior of offspring.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Occurrence of cerebral vasospasm after onset of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a critical factor determining clinical prognosis. Eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, both ω-3 fatty acids (ω-3FA), can suppress cerebral vasospasm, and docosahexaenoic acid can relax vessel vasoconstriction and have neuroprotective effects. We investigated whether administration of ω-3FA prevented cerebral vasospasm occurrence and improved clinical outcomes after aneurysmal SAH. METHODS From 2012 to 2015, 100 consecutive patients with aneurysmal SAH were divided into 2 periods. Between 2012 and 2013 (control period), 45 patients received standard management. Between 2014 and 2015 (ω-3FA period), 55 patients were prospectively treated with additional ω-3FA. Occurrence of cerebral vasospasm, occurrence of cerebral infarction caused by vasospasm, and modified Rankin Scale scores at 30 days and 90 days after onset of SAH for each period were evaluated and compared. RESULTS The frequency of angiographic cerebral vasospasm in the ω-3FA period was significantly lower than in the control period (12 patients vs. 23 patients, P = 0.004). The frequency of new infarction caused by vasospasm in the ω-3FA period was also significantly lower than in the control period (5 patients vs. 14 patients, P = 0.011). There was a significant difference in modified Rankin Scale scores at 90 days after onset of SAH between the groups (P = 0.031). No adverse events were associated with ω-3FA administration. CONCLUSIONS Administration of ω-3FA after aneurysmal SAH may reduce the frequency of cerebral vasospasm and may improve clinical outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A Rathke cleft cyst (RCC) with nonhemorrhagic rupture mimicking pituitary apoplexy has been reported rarely. CASE DESCRIPTION A 52-year-old woman, previously diagnosed with asymptomatic RCC, came to us with a severe headache, along with visual dysfunction and symptoms of pituitary insufficiency. Fluid-attenuated inversion recovery magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated diffuse hyperintensity in the cerebral cisterns, whereas watery clear cerebrospinal fluid was obtained by lumbar puncture. Surgery performed 1 month after onset revealed a nonhemorrhagic lesion, with a final diagnosis of nonhemorrhagic RCC rupture. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that nonhemorrhagic RCC rupture and subsequent leakage of the contents into subarachnoid space were the underlying pathogenesis in the present case of RCC resembling apoplexy.
