Abstract
The increasing economic losses associated with growth retardation caused by Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP), a microsporidian parasite infecting penaeid shrimp, require effective monitoring. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS)-1 region, the non-coding region of ribosomal clusters between 18S and 5.8S rRNA genes, is widely used in phylogenetic studies due to its high variability. In this study, the ITS-1 region sequence (~600-bp) of EHP was first identified, and primers for a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay targeting that sequence were designed. A newly developed nested-PCR method successfully detected the EHP in various shrimp (Penaeus vannamei and P. monodon) and related samples, including water and feces collected from Indonesia, Thailand, South Korea, India, and Malaysia. The primers did not cross-react with other hosts and pathogens, and this PCR assay is more sensitive than existing PCR detection methods targeting the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) and spore wall protein (SWP) genes. Phylogenetic analysis based on the ITS-1 sequences indicated that the Indonesian strain was distinct (86.2%) from other strains collected from Thailand and South Korea, and also showed the internal diversity among Thailand (N = 7, divided into four branches) and South Korean (N = 5, divided into two branches) samples. The results revealed the ability of the ITS-1 region to determine the genetic diversity of EHP from different geographical origins.

Abstract
Obesity is one of the major risk factors for metabolic diseases worldwide. This study examined the effects of YC-1102, an extract derived from the roots of Rosa multiflora, on 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice. In vivo experiments involved the oral administration of YC-1102 (100, 150, and 200 mg/kg body weight) daily to mice for eight weeks. YC-1102 was found to downregulate the expressions of PPARγ and C/EBPα during adipogenesis, inhibiting adipocyte differentiation and upregulating the expression of PGC-1α for energy metabolism to enhance mitochondrial biogenesis and fatty acid oxidation. It has been shown that daily administration of YC-1102 to mice receiving a HFD prevented an increase in body weight and the accumulation of body fat. YC-1102 administration also reduced TG, TC, and LDL cholesterol levels, as well as glucose and leptin levels, and increased adiponectin levels, thus effectively inhibiting the metabolism of lipids. YC-1102-treated mice showed significant reductions in the mRNA expression of PPARγ and C/EBPα. The levels of PGC-1α involved in energy metabolism increased significantly in the YC-1102-treated mice when compared to the HFD-treated mice. According to the findings of this study, YC-1102 has a dual mechanism that reduces transcription factors that promote the differentiation of adipocytes and increases transcription factors that promote energy consumption.

Abstract
Endometrial receptivity is a complex process that prepares the uterine endometrium for embryo implantation; insufficient endometrial receptivity is one of the causes of implantation failure. Here, we analyzed the microRNA expression profiles of exosomes derived from both receptive (RL95-2) and non-receptive (AN3-CA) endometrial epithelial cell (EEC) lines to identify exosomal miRNAs closely linked to endometrial receptivity. Among the 466 differentially expressed miRNAs, miR-205-5p was the most highly expressed in exosomes secreted from receptive RL95-2 cells. miR-205-5p, enriched at the adhesive junction, was closely related to endometrial receptivity. ZEB1, a transcriptional repressor of E-cadherin associated with endometrial receptivity, was identified as a direct target of miR-205-5p. miR-205-5p expression was significantly lower in the endometrial tissues of infertile women than in that of non-infertile women. In vivo, miR-205-5p expression was upregulated in the post-ovulatory phase, and its inhibitor reduced embryo implantation. Furthermore, administration of genetically modified exosomes overexpressing miR-205-5p mimics upregulated E-cadherin expression by targeting ZEB1 and improved spheroid attachment of non-receptive AN3-CA cells. These results suggest that the miR-205-5p/ZEB1/E-cadherin axis plays an important role in regulating endometrial receptivity. Thus, the use of exosomes harboring miR-205-5p mimics can be considered a potential therapeutic approach for improving embryo implantation.

Abstract
Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) are emerging as a novel therapeutic strategy for cancer therapy. Tumor-cell-derived sEVs contain biomolecules that can be utilized for cancer diagnosis. sEVs can directly exert tumor-killing effects or modulate the tumor microenvironment, leading to anti-cancer effects. In this review, the application of sEVs as a diagnostic tool, drug delivery system, and active pharmaceutical ingredient for cancer therapy will be highlighted. The therapeutic efficacies of sEVs will be compared to conventional immune checkpoint inhibitors. Additionally, this review will provide strategies for sEV engineering to enhance the therapeutic efficacies of sEVs. As a bench-to-bedside application, we will discuss approaches to encourage good-manufacturing-practice-compliant industrial-scale manufacturing and purification of sEVs.

Abstract
Endometrial receptivity is essential for successful pregnancy, and its impairment is a major cause of embryo-implantation failure. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) that regulate epigenetic modifications have been associated with endometrial receptivity. However, the molecular mechanisms whereby miRNAs regulate endometrial receptivity remain unclear. Therefore, we investigated whether miR-182 and its potential targets influence trophoblast cell attachment. miR-182 was expressed at lower levels in the secretory phase than in the proliferative phase of endometrium tissues from fertile donors. However, miR-182 expression was upregulated during the secretory phase in infertile women. Transfecting a synthetic miR-182-5p mimic decreased spheroid attachment of human JAr choriocarcinoma cells and E-cadherin expression (which is important for endometrial receptivity). miR-182-5p also downregulated N-Myc downstream regulated 1 (NDRG1), which was studied further. NDRG1 was upregulated in the secretory phase of the endometrium tissues and induced E-cadherin expression through the nuclear factor-κΒ (NF-κΒ)/zinc finger E-box binding homeobox 1 (ZEB1) signaling pathway. NDRG1-overexpressing or -depleted cells showed altered attachment rates of JAr spheroids. Collectively, our findings indicate that miR-182-5p-mediated NDRG1 downregulation impaired embryo implantation by upregulating the NF-κΒ/ZEB1/E-cadherin pathway. Hence, miR-182-5p is a potential biomarker for negative selection in endometrial receptivity and a therapeutic target for successful embryo implantation.

Abstract
Cellular components, surface layer protein (SLP) and exopolysaccharides (EPS) of postbiotic lactic bacteria (PLAB) can rehabilitate high-fat diet-induced dysbiosis and obese characteristic gut microbiome. However, it is not clear whether and how PLAB components affect gut microbiota and specifically adipocyte gene expression. Furthermore, SLP and EPS of PLAB in combination with polyphenolics of prebiotic wine grape seed flour (GSF) may have greater benefit on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity and gut microbiota imbalance. To investigate interactions, C57BL/6 mice were fed a HFD and orally administered saline (CON), 250 mg/Kg EPS, or 120 mg/Kg SLP or saline with fed 2% GSF (GSF) or combination (42 mg/Kg EPS + 20 mg/Kg SLP + 0.5% GSF; ALL). There were significant reductions of HFD-induced body weight gain, adipose weight, serum triglyceride, and insulin resistance by the SLP and ALL diets compared to CON, with the most profound effect by ALL. ALL significantly affected the distribution of intestinal bacterial genus and species particularly those involved in production of short chain fatty acid (SCFA) and anti-obesogenic action. Microarray analysis from adipose tissue showed that ALL significantly affected expression of genes related to fatty acid biosynthesis, autophagy, inflammatory response, immune response, brown adipose tissue development and response to lipoteichoic acid and peptidoglycan (p < 0.05). Interestingly, expression of Akp13 (A-kinase anchoring protein 13) gene, which is related to body mass index and immune response, was negatively associated with the abundance of obesogenic and SCFAs producing gut bacteria. These data suggest that a combination of postbiotic kefir LAB cellular components and prebiotic GSF establishes a healthy intestinal microbiota that in part was associated with the prevention of obesity and obesity-related diseases.

Abstract
In this study, whiteleg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) imported from Vietnam were collected from South Korean markets, and examined for 2 viruses: infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHHNV, recently classified as decapod penstyldensovirus-1), and white spot syndrome virus (WSSV). Among 58 samples, we detected IHHNV in 23 samples and WSSV in 2 samples, using polymerase chain reaction and sequencing analyses. This is the first report of IHHNV and WSSV detection in imported shrimp, suggesting that greater awareness and stricter quarantine policies regarding viruses infecting shrimp imported to South Korea are required.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION B cell subtypes and immunoglobulin variable (V), diversity (D), joining (J) gene segment usage of B cell receptors in ABO-incompatible (ABOi) kidney transplantation (KT) in comparison to ABO-compatible KT have not been studied. The aims of this study were to analyze the VDJ gene segment usages of B cell receptors in peripheral blood of ABOi KT recipients. METHODS Eighteen ABOi KT patients with accommodation (ABOiA), 10 ABO-compatible stable KT patients (ABOcS), and 10 ABOi KT patients with biopsy-proven acute antibody-mediated rejection (ABOiR) at day 10 after transplantation were selected. Complete transcriptomes of their peripheral blood samples were sequenced and analyzed through RNA sequencing. RESULTS By family, immunoglobulin heavy chain variable 3 (IGHV3), immunoglobulin light kappa chain variable 1 (IGKV1), immunoglobulin light lambda chain variable 2 (IGLV2), and immunoglobulin light lambda chain joining 3 (IGLJ3) gene segments were most frequently used in all groups, and their usage was not statistically different among the three groups except for IGHV3 and IGKV1. IGKV1 was more frequently used in the ABOiA group than in the ABOcS group. According to individual gene segments, IGHV3-7, IGHV3-15, IGHV4-59, IGKV3-11, IGLV1-44, IGLV2-14, IGLV4-69, and IGLV7-46 were more frequently used in the ABOcS group than other groups, and IGKV3-7 was more frequently used in the ABOiR group than other groups. IGLV5-52 and IGLV7-43 were more frequently used in the ABOiA group than in ABOcS group. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that RNA sequencing transcriptomic analyses of peripheral blood can provide information on the VDJ gene usage of B cell receptors and the mechanisms of accommodation and immune reaction in ABOi KT.

Abstract
Background Adrenal myelolipoma is a rare benign tumor composed of adipose tissue and hematopoetic elements resembling bone marrow. The majority of myelolipoma do not produce adrenal hormones and are only found as a result of evaluation for another disorder. With the widespread use of non-invasive abdominal imaging for various reason, its incidental detection has become more common. There are a few cases of breast cancer with concomitant adrenal myelolipoma in the literature. Case A 43-year-old woman presented to endocrine clinic due to presurgical assessment of adrenal mass prior breast cancer surgery. Abdominal CT showed a 9 x 8 cm sized, lobulated contour heterogeneous fatty density mass with peripheral calcification in right adrenal gland. Hormonal studies for adrenal incidentaloma revealed: Aldosterone/Renin ratio, 0.70 ([normal range < 30]; normal DHEA-S, 85.0 µg/dL ([normal range, 80 -560 µg/dL]), ACTH 25 pg/mL ([normal range, 10 - 60 pg/mL]), morning serum cortisol 8.9 µg/dL ([normal range, 5 - 12 µg/dL]). In 24-hour urine, there revealed free cortisol 21.6 µg/day ([normal range, 10 - 50 µg/day); metanephrine 0.19 mg/day ([normal range < 0.8 mg/day]); 17-ketosteroid 14.06 mg/day ([normal range, 7 - 20 mg/day]). The hormonal results of adrenal mass revealed as nonfunctioning. The adrenal mass was surgically resected in order to rule out malignancy. Pathology report showed myelolipoma. Conclusion We reported a case of adrenal myelolipoma coexisting with breast cancer where the diagnosis was made incidentally based on radiological features, treated with surgical resection.

Abstract
PURPOSE We sought to determine on-scene factors that predict severe injury to the occupants of passenger cars involved in frontal crashes. METHODS From January 2011 to December 2014, we collected data from patients who were taken to two emergency centres following a frontal motor vehicle crash. Binomial logistic regression was used to model the effects of occupant characteristics (sex, age, body mass index), vehicle damage (according to the collision deformation classification code), and safety devices on severe injuries (injury severity score >15). RESULTS Of 344 subjects, 75 (21.8 %) had severe injuries. Sex, seat belt status, extent of vertical crash, intrusion, and deformation extent (DE) were significantly different between severe and non-severe injuries. After adjusting for confounders, non-use of seat belt tripled the odds of severe injury [odds ratio (OR) 2.7, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 1.461-5.105]. DE ≥4 and intrusion increased the risk of severe injury (OR 2.4, 95 % CI 1.120-5.204 and OR 5.2, 95 % CI 2.525-10.780, respectively). A combination model to predict severe injury using intrusion, seat belt use, and DE ≥4 demonstrated 56.0 % sensitivity, 88.9 % specificity, and 58.4 % positive predictive value (AUC = 0.781, 95 % CI 0.734-0.824). CONCLUSIONS For passenger cars involved in a frontal crash, intrusion, unbelted status, and DE ≥4 are good predictors of severe injury. Sequential criteria using vehicle DE, seat belt use, and intrusion can be used by first responders to triage patients involved in a frontal collision.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Coiling of complex aneurysms is still difficult even with current adjuvant techniques. This study sought to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a combination of multicatheter plus stent or balloon for the treatment of complex aneurysms. MATERIALS AND METHODS All complex aneurysms that underwent coiling with the combination technique were identified from prospectively maintained neurointerventional data bases. "Complex aneurysm" was defined as a wide-neck aneurysm with branch incorporation into or a deep lobulation of the sac. The clinical and angiographic outcomes were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS Sixty-two complex aneurysms (12 ruptured, 50 unruptured) in 62 patients (mean age, 57 years; male/female ratio, 12:50) were treated with a combination technique by using a multicatheter plus stent (n = 42, 3 ruptured) or balloon (n = 20, 9 ruptured). Treatment-related morbidity (grade 3 hemiparesis) occurred in 1 patient (1.6%). Except for 1 patient who had treatment-related morbidity, none of the other patients with unruptured aneurysms developed new neurologic symptoms at discharge. Nine of the 12 patients with ruptured aneurysms had good outcomes (Glasgow Outcome Score, 4 or 5) at the latest follow-up (mean, 32 months; range, 6-72 months), and 1 patient died from an initial SAH. Posttreatment control angiograms revealed complete occlusion in 27, neck remnant in 34, and incomplete occlusion in 1 aneurysm. At least 1 follow-up catheter or MR angiogram was available in 80.6% (n = 50) (mean, 21 months; range, 6-65 months). There were 4 minor and 3 major recurrences (14.0%). CONCLUSIONS In this case series, the combination technique by using multicatheter plus stent or balloon seemed safe and effective for the treatment of complex aneurysms.

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the porcine gene GADD45A (growth arrest and DNA-damage-inducible protein 45 alpha) as a positional candidate controlling quantitative trait loci (QTL) for meat quality traits on chromosome 6 (SSC6). Four exons of the porcine GADD45A gene were defined from cDNA and BAC clone sequences. A total of 4 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified in porcine GADD45A. The association of these SNPs (g.196A>G, g.392C>A, g.955T>C and g.3247A>T) with meat quality traits was evaluated in 678 Berkshire pigs. The genotype distribution of only one SNP (g.3247A>T) conformed to Hardy Weinberg equilibrium in the pig population analyzed in this study, and the other SNPs were not in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. All four SNPs were significantly associated with meat quality traits. Three SNPS (g.196A>G, g.392C>A, and g.955T>C) showed similar significant association patterns for drip loss, cooking loss, meat color (lightness; MC_L and yellowness; MC_B), shear force and water-holding capacity traits. By contrast, g.3247A>T had a different association pattern with other traits such as intramuscular fat content (IMF) and backfat thickness (BF), drip loss, MC_L, and moisture. These findings will provide useful information for genetic characterization or association studies in other pig populations. Additionally, these markers can potentially be applied in pig breeding programs to improve meat quality traits, including IMF and BF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteoporosis can develop and become aggravated in kidney transplant patients; however, the best preventive options for post-transplantation osteoporosis remain controversial. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed cohort of 182 renal transplant recipients of mean age 46.7 ± 12.1 years including 47.3% women. Seventy-three patients received neither vitamin D nor bisphosphonate after transplantation (group 1). The other patients were classified into the following 3 groups: calcium plus vitamin D (group 2; n = 40); bisphosphonate (group 3; n = 18); and both regimens (group 4; n = 51). Bone mineral density (BMD) was evaluated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at baseline and at 1 year after transplantation. RESULTS At 1 year after transplantation, T-scores of the femoral neck and entire femur were significantly decreased in group 1 (-0.23 ± 0.65 [P = .004] and -0.21 ± 0.74 [P = .018], respectively), whereas the lumbar spine was significantly increased in group 4 (0.27 ± 0.79; P = .020). Post hoc analysis demonstrated that the delta T-score was significantly lower in group 1 than in group 4 (P = .009, 0.035, and 0.031 for lumbar spine, femoral neck, and entire femur, respectively). In a multivariate analysis adjusted by age, sex, body mass index, dialysis duration, diabetes, calcineurin inhibitors, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and persistent hyperparathyroidism, both group 2 and group 4 showed protective effects on BMD reduction (odds ratio [OR], 0.165; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.032-0.845 [P = .031]; and OR, 0.169; 95% CI, 0.045-0.626 [P = .008]; respectively). However, group 3 did not show a protective effect (OR, 0.777; 95% CI, 0.198-3.054; P = .718), because their incidence of persistent hyperparathyroidism after transplantation was significantly higher (50.0%) than the other groups (P < .001). The incidence of bone fractures did not differ among the groups. CONCLUSIONS Combination therapy with vitamin D and bisphosphonate was the most effective regimen to improve BMD among kidney recipients.

Abstract
The present study aimed at investigating the effectiveness and tolerability of -bupropion hydrochloride extended release (XL) in major depressive disorder (MDD) patients with atypical features (AF).51 patients were prescribed bupropion XL for 8 weeks (6 visits: screening, baseline, weeks 1, 2, 4 and 8). The primary efficacy measure was a change of the Structured Interview Guide for the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-Seasonal Affective Disorder Version (SIGH-SAD) from baseline to endpoint. Secondary efficacy measures included the SIGH-SAD atypical symptoms subscale, Clinical Global Impression-Severity (CGI-S), Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS) and Epworth Sleepiness Questionnaire (ESQ). Response or remission was defined as ≥50% reduction or ≤7 in SIGH-SAD total scores, respectively, at end of treatment.The HAM-D-29 total score reduced by 55.3% from baseline (27.3±6.5) to end of treatment (12.2±6.3) (p<0.001). Atypical symptom subscale scores also reduced by 54.5% from baseline (9.2±3.0) to end of treatment (4.2±2.8) (p<0.001). At the end of treatment, 24.4% (n=10) and 51.2% (n=21) subjects were classified as remitters and responders, respectively. The most frequently reported AEs were headache (13.7%), dry mouth (11.8%), dizziness (9.8%), and dyspepsia (9.8%).Our preliminary study indicates that bupropion XL may be beneficial in the treatment of MDD with atypical features. Adequately powered, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials are necessary to determine our results.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to assess the enhancement patterns of hepatic focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) on gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI and diffusion-weighted (DW) MRI. METHODS This retrospective study had institutional review board approval. Gadoxetic acid-enhanced and DW MR images were evaluated in 23 patients with 30 FNHs (26 histologically proven and 4 radiologically diagnosed). The lesion enhancement patterns of the hepatobiliary phase images were classified as heterogeneous or homogeneous signal intensity (SI), and as dominantly high/iso or low SI compared with those of adjacent liver parenchyma. Heterogeneous (any) SI lesions and homogeneous low SI lesions were categorised into the fibrosis group, whereas homogeneous high/iso SI lesions were categorised into the non-fibrosis group. Additionally, lesion SI on T2 weighted images, DW images and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values were compared between the two groups. RESULTS The lesions showed heterogeneous high/iso SI (n=16), heterogeneous low SI (n=5), homogeneous high/iso SI (n=7) or homogeneous low SI (n=2) at the hepatobiliary phase MR images. The fibrosis group lesions were more likely to show high SI on DW images and T2 weighted images compared with those in the non-fibrosis group (p<0.05). ADC values tended to be lower in the fibrosis group than those in the non-fibrosis group without significance. CONCLUSION FNH showed variable enhancement patterns on hepatobiliary phase images during gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI. SI on DW and T2 weighted images differed according to the fibrosis component contained in the lesion. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE FNH shows a wide spectrum of imaging findings on gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI and DW MRI.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Abnormalities of calcium and phosphorus metabolism in end-stage renal disease patients can persist after transplantation. We investigated their natural courses after transplantation, their risk factors for posttransplantation hypercalcemia and hypophosphatemia, and their impacts on allograft outcomes. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed a total of 490 adult patients who underwent kidney transplantations between 2000 and 2009. RESULTS The serum calcium continued to increase, and reaching a plateau at around 3 months after transplantation. Thereafter it decreased, reaching a stable level by 2 years. Forty-four patients (9.0%) displayed hypercalcemia within 1 year; it persisted longer than that in 23 subjects (4.7%). Both longer dialysis duration (odds ratio [OR] 1.423; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.192-1.699) and high intact serum parathyroid hormone (iPTH) level before transplantation (OR 1.002; 95% CI, 1.000-1.003) increased the risk for posttransplantation hypercalcemia. After a significant decrease during the first week, the serum phosphorus level increased, becoming stable between 1 and 6 months after transplantation. Hypophsphatemia occurred in 379 patients (77.3%) with 336 patients displaying hypophosphatemia without hypercalcemia. However, neither hypercalcemia nor hypophosphatemia influenced graft outcomes. Eight patients underwent pretransplantation parathyroidectomy, whereas 4 patients underwent posttransplantation parathyroidectomy. Neither group of patients experienced posttransplantation hypercalcemia. CONCLUSIONS Both hypercalcemia and hypophosphatemia are common after renal transplantation, especially among patients with a long history of dialysis before transplantation. Strict control of hyperparathyroidism including parathyroidectomy before transplantation may be the appropriate approach to these abnormalities.

Abstract
Indigo carmine is a blue dye that is widely applied to localise ureteral orifices. It is generally believed to be a safe, biologically inert substance, and hypotensive reactions are extremely rare. However, we experienced three cases of indigo carmine-induced hypotension within a period of two weeks.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility and efficacy of percutaneous radiofrequency ablation combined with transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma that are invisible on both ultrasound and unenhanced CT. 73 patients with a total of 101 nodular hepatocellular carcinomas were referred for possible radiofrequency (RF) ablation. Of these, 14 lesions (14%) in 14 patients were invisible on both ultrasound and unenhanced CT. The invisible nodules averaged 1.2 cm in diameter (range, 0.8-2.0 cm; median, 1.1 cm). After segmental TACE, percutaneous RF ablation was performed if the index tumour was visible on fluoroscopy, ultrasound or CT. All cases of combined treatment were evaluated for size of ablative zone, complications, rate of technical effectiveness at 1-month follow-up CT and local tumour progression. After TACE, percutaneous RF ablation was technically feasible in 10 (71%) of the 14 nodules. RF ablation was performed with the guidance of fluoroscopy (n = 6, 42%), ultrasound (n = 2, 14%) or CT (n = 2, 14%). The mean diameter of the ablative zone by percutaneous RF ablation combined with TACE was 4.8+/-0.7 cm and 3.4+/-0.6 cm in the long and short axis, respectively. No major complications were documented. The primary technical effectiveness rate for nodules treated by combined treatment was 100% (10/10) at 1-month follow-up CT. No local tumour progression was found during the follow-up period (median 15 months; range 4-20 months). Percutaneous RF ablation combined with TACE is a feasible and effective technique for treating small hepatocellular carcinomas that are not visible on ultrasound or unenhanced CT.

Abstract
Targeting of index tumours is prerequisite to their radiofrequency ablation. However, small hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) in the liver dome are often invisible on ultrasonography, thus causing difficulty in their targeting. In cases with multinodular HCCs, adjacent HCC lesions with compact iodized oil retention can be used as anatomic landmarks to guide radiofrequency (RF) ablation of such nodules under fluoroscopy. We present two cases in which nodules that were difficult to target with conventional methods were successfully treated by RF ablation using this targeting strategy.

Abstract
A 41-year-old man presented with alcoholic liver cirrhosis with ascites and clotting abnormality. After therapeutic paracentesis, haemoperitoneum ensued without colour Doppler ultrasound or CT evidence of pseudoaneurysm or haematoma at the site of paracentesis. However, an angiogram of the inferior epigastric artery revealed an obvious small pseudoaneurysm arising from its small muscular branch, and this pseudoaneurysm was successfully treated by transcatheter embolization with N-butyl cyanoacrylate. Transcatheter embolization with N-butyl cyanoacrylate is useful treatment for pseudoaneurysms arising from the small muscular branch of the inferior epigastric artery, which cannot be catheterized superselectively close to the pseudoaneurysm.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy and feasibility of local delivery of paclitaxel to inhibit pseudointimal hyperplasia/intimal hyperplasia in swine transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) models TIPS were created in seven healthy domestic swine (15-20 kg). Before TIPS stent insertion, we performed a short-term infusion of paclitaxel (treatment group: n = 4) and saline (control group: n = 3) into the TIPS tract using a balloon catheter in which two 0.010 inch holes were created on opposite sides of the balloon. Paclitaxel or saline was given to all animals via the hepatic parenchymal and venous outflow tract. The animals were followed for up to two weeks and then killed. Gross and histological evaluations of the shunts were performed, and the maximum pseudointimal/intimal hyperplasia thicknesses were calculated for each animal The average infusion time of paclitaxel or saline was 7.6 min (6-9 min). At gross and histological evaluation, considerable pseudointimal hyperplasia had formed in the control group and statistically significant differences were found upon microscopic evaluation in the maximum pseudointimal hyperplasia thickness between the control (2.41 mm, range 1.7-3.16 mm) and animals receiving paclitaxel (0.63 mm, range 0.42-0.98 mm, p<0.05) Local delivery of paclitaxel at the time of TIPS creation may have been effective in reducing pseudointimal/intimal hyperplasia in swine TIPS models.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Authors from Seoul describe their experience with patients already on triple therapy by intracavernosal injection who changed to oral sildenafil. Rather surprisingly, they found that patients had had a greater preference than expected for triple therapy, feeling that they had a better quality of erection on intracavernosal injection. The subject of the effect of renal transplantation on sperm quality and sex hormone levels is discussed by authors from Teheran. They found that sperm morphology and density remained unchanged, but there were significant improvements in sperm mobility. There was also an improvement in hormone levels and sexual function. OBJECTIVE To investigate the efficacy and preference for oral sildenafil or intracavernosal injection (ICI) therapy in patients with erectile dysfunction (ED) already using ICI. PATIENTS AND METHODS In all, 69 patients with ED (mean age 55.1 years, sd 12.3) on ICI therapy with triple solution (papaverine/phentolamine/prostaglandin-E1) for > 1 year were recruited for the study. Their erection quality, adverse reactions and selection rate of oral sildenafil or ICI as treatment, after using sildenafil for 3 months, and the reasons for their preferences, were compared between the regimens, RESULTS Overall, 52 men (75%) responded to sildenafil; of these men, the erection quality with ICI was better than that with sildenafil in 46 (89%) and 16 (31%) preferred ICI as their treatment. Eighteen patients (35%) used each treatment alternately and 18 (35%) used sildenafil exclusively. The main reason given by patients for choosing ICI was a better quality of erection (74%). CONCLUSION More patients with ED and using ICI preferred it as their main treatment than was expected, even though they had a good response to oral sildenafil. A better quality of erection with ICI was the reason why experienced patients chose this method, differing from the choice of patients starting treatment for ED.

Abstract
AIMS To evaluate the prevalence of the 16189 variant of mitochondrial DNA in Korean adults and its association with insulin resistance. METHODS We investigated 160 non-diabetic subjects from a community-based diabetes survey conducted in Yonchon County, Korea in 1993. We extracted the DNA from peripheral blood and examined the 16189 variant by polymerase chain reaction and restrictive enzyme digestion. We compared body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, 2-h plasma glucose after 75 g glucose load, fasting insulin, cholesterol, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance and beta-cell function between the subjects with 16189 variant and wild type. RESULTS The prevalence of the 16189 variant in Korean adults was 28.8% (46 of 160). Subjects with the 16189 variant had higher fasting glucose and BMI than those with wild type, but fasting insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance and beta-cell function, cholesterol, and blood pressure were not different between two groups. CONCLUSION Our results provide evidence for an association of a frequent mitochondrial polymorphism with higher fasting glucose and the risk factors of diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
The surfactant-free nanoparticles of poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) were prepared by dialysis method without surfactant and physicochemical properties such as particle size and drug contents were investigated against used initial solvent. The size of PLGA nanoparticles and drug contents were significantly changed by used initial solvent. The size of PLGA nanoparticles prepared from dimethylacetamide (DMAc), dimethylformamide (DMF), and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as a initial used solvent was smaller than that of acetone. Selected initial solvent used to dissolve the copolymer significantly affects the size of nanoparticles and drug contents. It was shown that PLGA nanoparticles have spherical shapes from the results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations. It was thought that surfactant-free nanoparticles of PLGA entrapping norfloxacin (NFX) has nice drug loading capacity without free-drug on the surface of nanoparticles through the analysis of X-ray powder diffraction. From these results, it was showed the potential that the PLGA nanoparticles could be formed successively by dialysis method without surfactant. Release kinetics of NFX used as a model drug was governed by not only drug contents but also particle size parameter. The higher the drug contents and the larger the particle size resulted in slower the drug release.

Abstract
We experienced a case of adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) in a 48-year-old Korean female, who has never been abroad since birth and no history of blood transfusion. The patient had hypercalcemia and multiple lymphadenopathy. Histopathologic study of left cervical lymph node (LN) and bone marrow (BM) revealed that infiltrates of malignant lymphoid cells were composed of small, medium and large cells with pleomorphic nuclei. Smears of peripheral blood (PB) showed lymphopenia (16%) with the appearance of a few atypical lymphoid cells (less than 2%), but not the typical clover leaf cells seen in ATLL. Immunophenotypic study of LN and BM revealed T cell phenotype. PB showed increased CD4+ T cell (T(H), CD3/CD4+, 57%) and decreased CD8+ T cell counts (T(S), CD3/CD8+, 6.7%). The sera of the patient and her family were reactive for HTLV-I antibody. The specific sequences of pol, env, and tax of HTLV-I DNA were detected in the lymphoma cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) using polymerase chain reaction. Ultrastructural examination of PBMC confirmed numerous type c virus particles in extracellular space. This case was an acute type of ATLL without overt leukemic features in PB. Despite chemotherapy and intensive conservative treatment, she died 3 months after admission.

Abstract
A mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) cell line (JeKo-1) was established from peripheral blood mononuclear cells of a patient with a large cell variant of MCL showing leukaemic conversion. JeKo-1 cells were Epstein-Barr virus negative and showed a B-cell phenotype with IgM+, IgD+, CD3-, CD5+, CD10-, CD19+, CD20+ and CD23-; they overexpressed cyclin D1, Bcl-2, c-Myc and Rb proteins. Bcl-1/J(H) gene rearrangement was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction, although karyotypic analysis showed 40/41 chromosomes devoid of apparent t(11;14)(q13;q32) translocation. JeKo-1 cells were highly tumourigenic in SCID mice.

Abstract
Granulocytic sarcoma (GS) is an uncommon and localized extramedullary tumor composed of immature granulocytic cells. Most GS reported in large series were not associated with overt acute myelogenous leukemia. Gastric perforation occurred during prednisolone therapy in a 72-year-old Japanese male with a four-month history of a myelofibrosis-like state. Subtotal gastrectomy was performed for a suspected gastric ulcer perforation. Gastric histologic, immunohistochemical and cytochemical examination revealed diffuse infiltration by sheets of myeloblasts and promyelocytes with scant or moderately abundant cytoplasm including a few eosinophilic myelocytes. Bone marrow study done in one month after the operation disclosed refractory anemia with excess of blasts (RAEB). Leukemic transformation occurred two months later, and a subcutaneous tumor appeared on the forehead. The forehead tumor predominantly consisted of myeloblasts without evidence of maturation. Both the stomach and forehead tumors were examined immunohistochemically with a panel of monoclonal antibodies (LCA, L26, MT1, UCHL1, OPD4, LN-1, LN-2, LN-3, MB1, Leu-M1, PM) and polyclonal antibodies (lysozyme, alpha 1-antitrypsin, alpha 1-antichymotrypsin, S-100 protein, lactoferrin), as well as naphthol-ASD-chloroacetate esterase staining to investigate and characterize the reliable marks for GS, and the patient was diagnosed as GS. We found that gastric GS may occur in a myelofibrosis-like state followed by RAEB of myelodysplastic syndrome and that naphthol-ASD-chloroacetate esterase staining and immunohistochemical detection of MT1, lysozyme, and alpha 1-antitrypsin were the most reliable markers for confirming the diagnosis of GS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the MR appearance of necrotizing fungal granulomas occurring in the liver of leukemic patients with hepatosplenic fungal disease and transfusional hemosiderosis on antifungal antibiotics. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Four patients with acute myelogenous leukemia (n = 2) or acute lymphocytic leukemia (n = 2) who developed hepatosplenic fungal disease, and were treated with antifungal medication, underwent MRI examination on a 1.5 T MR imager. MR images were prospectively evaluated and correlated with liver biopsy (three patients), and clinical picture (one patient). RESULTS Multiple liver lesions measuring approximately 1 cm in diameter were identified in all patients. Lesions possessed a distinctive MR appearance: central mild hyperintensity with a peripheral ring of very low signal intensity on precontrast T1- and T2-weighted images. The central region of the lesions enhanced following gadolinium administration with the peripheral ring remaining low in signal intensity. CONCLUSION Necrotizing fungal granulomas in the liver of patients with transfusional hemosiderosis on treatment with antifungal antibiotics have a distinctive appearance of moderate high signal intensity center on T1- and T2-weighted and postgadolinium MR images with a peripheral rim of low signal intensity. This appearance reflects the presence of iron-laden macrophages in the periphery of granulomas and may be expected in processes that initiate an immune response involving aggregation of macrophages in the liver of patients with transfusional iron overload.

Abstract
The binding of biotinylated bauhinia purpurea (BPA) and pisum Sativum (PSA) lectins to paraffin-embedded tissue sections from 10 normal breast and 55 breast carcinoma has been investigated by applying avidin biotin peroxidase method (ABC). BPA showed very low affinity for normal breast epithelium and the binding was confined to the luminal surface. Eighty-seven percent carcinoma bound BPA, and the staining patterns varied depending on the histologic grade of tumors: luminal surface binding in grade 1 carcinomas; diffuse, granular cytoplasmic with para- or perinuclear deposits and staining along the plasma membrane in grade 2 and grade 3 carcinomas. PSA bound consistently to the luminal surface of all ducts and acinar cells of normal breast tissue. PSA was reactive with all carcinoma but the staining profiles were similar regardless of the tumor differentiation. It is concluded that the lectins used in this study have limited usefulness in routine diagnosis.

Abstract
Esophageal duplication cysts account for a very small percentage of benign esophageal tumors and are infrequently symptomatic. Esophageal duplication cysts result from aberrant alignment of the normal vacuolization process that produce the esophageal lumen in the 5th to 8th week of embryonic life. Complications most often are bleeding into or infection of cysts. Recently, we experienced a case of esophageal duplication cyst complicated with intramural huge hematoma and the cause of hematoma could not be identified. We report it with a review of literatures.

Abstract
Immunoreactivity with monoclonal antibodies against epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), vimentin, squamous epithelium-specific keratin, nonsquamous epithelium-specific keratin, and polyclonal antibodies epithelial cells of 55 cervical smears using the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex and indirect immunoperoxidase methods to detect antigens. Most of the abnormal squamous cells with few normal cells were reactive for EMA but the intensity of the reaction was variable in both cases. There was no correlation in the reactivity between normal and abnormal cells with different cytokeratins varying in their molecular weight. Vimentin was also reactive with both cells. The results of this experiment suggest that antibodies used, appear to be of limited usefulness in the diagnosis of cervical smears.

Abstract
Normal bronchopulmonary tissues and pulmonary carcinomas including three major types (squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and small-cell carcinoma) were studied using three biotinylated lectins (Bauhinia purpurea [BPA], Phaseolus vulgaris [PHA], and Maclura pomifera [MPA]) by avidin biotin peroxidase complex (ABC) method. The study demonstrated that BPA binds with macrophages and pneumocytes of normal tissue, and with adenocarcinoma and small-cell carcinoma, but nonreactive with squamous cell carcinoma. PHA and MPA bound to all the normal components of bronchopulmonary tree and carcinomas of all types. Adenocarcinoma showed the highest density of reacting sites for BPA and MPA, and squamous cell carcinoma showed the highest binding sites for PHA, while small-cell carcinoma were the lowest reacting variant for all lectins. Lectins used in this study have limited usefulness for the diagnosis of pulmonary neoplasms.

Abstract
An HTLV-I-immortalized human T cell line (JP-2), a N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine-treated JP-2 line (JP-2T), and an adult T cell leukemia cell line (ATL-1T) were examined morphologically and phenotypically. All of these cell lines expressed some T cell markers, including CD4, and showed rearrangement of T cell receptor (TCR) genes, but they lacked CD3 and TCR antigens and expressed some myelomonocytic markers (CD68, HL-21, CD15, CD16). JP-2 cells grew in suspension, but JP-2T and ATL-1T cells, which mostly adhered to the surface of culture vessels, showed macrophage-like morphological features and expressed more monocyte/macrophage markers (lysozyme, alpha 1-antitrypsin) and fibronectin. ATL-1T cells transplanted into SCID mice lost the macrophage features. These results suggest that HTLV-I infected T cells can express some macrophage features and that these cells may provide a model that will be useful in elucidating the phenotypic variability of T cell lymphomas.

Abstract
In order to discriminate HTLV-II from HTLV-I, HTLV-II-specific polyclonal antibodies against a synthetic peptide of HTLV-II envelope sequence were raised in rabbits. We immunized two adult rabbits with a KLH-conjugated synthetic peptide corresponding to the amino acid sequence 171-196 of the HTLV-II envelope sequence, which is a specific region for HTLV-II as evaluated with an ELISA method. The resulting rabbit antisera to the synthetic peptide reacted with gp46 of HTLV-II lysates in Western blot analysis but not with that of HTLV-I. Flow cytometric analysis and immunohistochemical study revealed that these affinity purified antisera recognized some HTLV-II-producing cell lines examined, but not HTLV-I-producing cell lines or other cell lines uninfected by HTLV. These findings indicate that these antisera specifically recognized the envelope glycoprotein (gp46) of HTLV-II and suggest the specificity of this region in the immune response to HTLV-II. Such antisera are useful in distinguishing between HTLV-I and HTLV-II infection and in determining the presence of individual HTLV-II-infected cells both in vivo and in vitro, including non-lymphoid cells. They may also assist in the elucidation of the pathogenesis of HTLV-II.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The occurrence of osteoid-chondral elements in gliosarcoma is extremely rare and has been reported in only two cases. A new, rare case of gliosarcoma with osteosarcomatous differentiation in a 55-year-old man and histogenesis of osteoid-chondral tissue in gliosarcoma is discussed. METHODS Surgically removed tumor tissues were examined immunohistochemically and electron microscopically, and a histologic examination was performed. RESULTS Immunohistochemical and electron microscopic studies confirmed the presence of glial, fibroblastic, and osteoid-chondral elements. A major part of the sarcomatous tissue was undifferentiated and stained only by vimentin. Some areas of osteoid-chondral tissue were positive for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). CONCLUSIONS These data suggest that osteoid-chondral elements came from the sarcomatous portion and GFAP positivity is not restricted to astrocytes and has been seen particularly in chondroid areas of non-glial tumors.

Abstract
A new interleukin-2(IL-2)-dependent T cell line, designated CS-IIA, was established by co-cultivating normal human cord leukocytes and a lethally X-irradiated HTLV-II-producing simian leukocyte cell line (Si-IIA). CS-IIA showed CD4 dominance during the early culture. However, after addition of IL-2, CS-IIA predominantly co-expressed CD4 and CD8 (69.5%) and also expressed the surface markers CD1-, CD3+, CD19-, CD25+ and HLA-DR+. A significantly elevated level of IL-4 (1697 pg/ml) was observed in the culture supernatant from CS-IIA. In addition, the conversion of phenotype from some CD4+CD8+ cells to CD4+CD8- was demonstrated by the neutralization assay using anti-IL-4 antibody. CS-IIA had a normal human karyotype and was free from Epstein-Barr virus nuclear antigen and immunoreactive with sera of HTLV-I- or HTLV-II-infected patients and anti-HTLV-1, p19 or p24 mAb. The provirus genome of HTLV-II was detected in this cell line by the polymerase chain reaction combined with a digoxigenin-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. However, electron microscopy of CS-IIA cells revealed no C-type virus particles in the extracellular space. These results indicate that HTLV-II can be transmitted from an HTLV-II-infected simian leukocyte cell line to human cord T lymphocytes and suggest that co-expression of CD4 and CD8 on T cells may be induced by the high level of IL-4, which can mediate CD8 induction on CD4+ T cell clones.

Abstract
Monocytic leukemia (MoL) cells were obtained from the peripheral blood of a patient in whom the leukemic cells infiltrating various lymphoreticular organs exhibited features intermediate between interdigitating reticulum cells (IDC) and ordinary phagocytic macrophages, whereas the leukemic cells in the peripheral blood were essentially monocytic and lacked such features. Peripheral blood CD4+ T-cells were established as an interleukin-2-dependent T-cell line. When the MoL cells were exposed for a few days to conditioned medium from the T-cell line, they extended several dendritic cytoplasmic projections and became intensely positive for HLA-DR antigen, cytoplasmic S-100 beta protein, and CD1 antigen. Functionally, the conditioned medium significantly down-regulated Fc-mediated and Fc-independent phagocytic activities, and the levels of lysosomal enzymes such as lysozyme and nonspecific esterase in the MoL cells. Moreover, the conditioned medium significantly up-regulated the accessory cell function of the MoL cells as measured by the primary allogenic mixed leukocyte reaction (MLR). Furthermore, the conditioned medium significantly down-regulated the expression of CD14 antigen. Biochemical analysis indicated that the factor responsible for these changes is a protein which is distinct from known human cytokines and whose molecular weight is approximately 31 kDa. These findings suggest that IDC are closely related the monocytic lineage and that helper T-cells play an important role in constructing the microenvironment of T-lymphoid tissues which is necessary for the differentiation and maturation of IDC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The breast is rarely a primary site for extranodal malignant lymphoma. Most reported primary non-Hodgkin malignant lymphomas of the breast (PBL) are of B-cell phenotype. METHODS Histologic and immunohistochemical analyses of seven patients with PBL and a statistical analysis of 152 patients with PBL reported in the Japanese literature were performed. RESULTS Malignant lymphoma could not be predicted preoperatively with clinical and radiologic findings; breast carcinoma, fibroadenoma, and phyllodes tumor were the preoperative diagnoses. All patients were women; they ranged in age from 31 to 80 years (mean, 57.6 years). The right breast was involved initially in five patients. In four, only the breast was involved (Stage I), whereas in three, the ipsilateral axillary lymph nodes (Stage II) were involved at diagnosis. According to the Working Formulation, all patients belonged to the intermediate grade and were classified as having diffuse large cell (five patients) or mixed (two patients) lymphoma. Immunophenotypic analysis revealed that all patients had B-cell lymphoma. No patients had lymphoepithelial lesions, which is the characteristic feature in categorizing a lymphoma as a mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. A statistical analysis of the patient reported in the Japanese literature has divided PBL into two types: a bilateral type that affects younger women and a unilateral type that has a broad age distribution, but preponderantly occurs in older women. The age and stage at diagnosis were significant prognostic factors in predicting the survival time, but the location and size of the tumor at initial presentation, histopathologic type, terminal leukemic manifestation, and treatment modality were not. CONCLUSIONS This study indicates that most PBL are diffuse large cell lymphoma of B-cell phenotype and that the age and stage at diagnosis are significant prognostic factors.

Abstract
One case of small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma in the ampullary region of the duodenum is reported. The histological appearance of the tumor was identical to pulmonary small-cell carcinoma. Neuroendocrine differentiation was demonstrated immunohistochemically by positive immunoreaction for neuron specific enolase, Leu-7 and chromogranin, and ultrastructurally by the presence of scanty dense-core neurosecretory type granules. Small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma in the ampulla of Vater is extremely rare. To our knowledge, this is the sixth reported case.

Abstract
Thirty-three cases of Hodgkin's disease (thirteen nodular sclerosis, four diffuse, lymphocyte predominance, and sixteen mixed cellularity) were studied with Bauhinia purpurea (BPA), peanut agglutinin (PNA), anti-Leu-M1, LN2, and Ber-H2 by the avidinbiotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) method in paraffin sections. Reed-Sternberg (RS) cells and variants were stained positively with one or more of the reagents in all cases. BPA staining was positive in 32 of 33 cases (97.0%), PNA staining was positive in 23 of 33 cases (69.7%), Leu-M1 was positive in 13 of 33 cases (39.4%), LN2 was positive in 14 of 33 cases (42.4%), and Ber-H2 was positive in 24 of 33 cases (72.7%). Many RS cells were stained moderately to strongly and were readily recognized in 31 cases (96.9%) of BPA+, 10 (43.5%) of PNA+, 8 (61.5%) of Leu-M1+, 6 (42.9%) of LN2+, and 22 (91.7%) of Ber-H2+ cases; in the remaining positive cases, the RS cells were found only after careful searching. Three staining patterns were recognized: paranuclear, diffuse cytoplasmic, and membranous. These three patterns were obtained with all markers except for LN2. LN2 showed diffuse cytoplasmic staining in most of the positive cells, and a few cells showed paranuclear deposits. BPA reactivity was not affected by formalin fixation or paraffin embedding. Except for RS cells, BPA also showed dense cytoplasmic staining reaction with macrophage-histiocytes. Sixty cases of non-Hodgkin's diffuse lymphomas (30 T- and 30 B-cell origin) were also studied. Tumor cells were not stained with BPA, PNA, and Leu-M1, but stained positively with LN2 in six T-cell lymphomas and thirteen B-cell lymphomas, and with Ber-H2 in six T-cell lymphomas and one B-cell lymphoma. In conclusion, to facilitate the detection of RS cells and related variants in paraffin sections, BPA can be accepted as a useful marker due to its high-detection rate, reproducible staining pattern, and resistance to fixatives.

Abstract
Three helper T cell lines, designated CR-IIA (CR-IIA-1, CR-IIA-2, and CR-IIA-3), were established by coculturing normal human cord leukocytes with a lethally irradiated HTLV-II (human T-lymphotropic virus type II)-infected rabbit leukocyte cell line (Ra-IIA). CR-IIA had a normal human karyotype and expressed the surface markers CD3(+), CD4(+), CD8(-), CD19(-), CD25(+) and HLA-DR(+), confirming their helper T cell nature. CR-IIA cells were all free of Epstein-Barr virus nuclear antigen and were immunoreactive with serum samples from HTLV-I- or HTLV-II-infected patients and with anti-HTLV-I, p19 or p24 antibody. The provirus genome of HTLV-II was detected in these cell lines by the polymerase chain reaction combined with a digoxigenin-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Electron microscopy of CR-IIA-1 cells revealed a few immature type C virus particles. These results suggest that HTLV-II was transmitted from the infected rabbit leukocyte cell line to human cord helper T lymphocytes with the development of immortalized HTLV-II-producing T cell lines.
