Abstract
UNLABELLED Chronic kidney disease (CKD)-mineral and bone disorder suggests that fragile bone and vascular disorder might be connected closely in CKD patients. In this study, fracture event was significantly associated with myocardial infarction (MI) in end-stage renal disease patients on hemodialysis (HD), especially for vertebral fractures. INTRODUCTION CKD-mineral and bone disorder is characterized by biochemical abnormalities, bone disorders, and vascular calcification. We aimed to verify the association between fracture and MI in CKD patients. METHODS Records for incident CKD stage 3 to 5 patients and patients who initiated HD between July 2014 and June 2018 were retrieved from the Korean Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service Database. Fractures were defined using diagnostic codes and were classified into vertebral, femoral, and other site fractures. MI was defined using a combination of MI diagnostic codes and related procedure codes. Multiple logistic regressions and 1:1 propensity score matching analysis were conducted. RESULTS A total of 38,935 patients (HD, 11,379; pre-dialysis CKD, 27,556) were included in this study. A total of 5,057 (13.0%) patients experienced fracture, and 1,431 (3.7%) patients had MI. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that fracture was significantly associated with MI in the HD group (odds ratio (OR) 1.34, P = 0.024), but not in the pre-dialysis CKD group (OR 1.04, P = 0.701). After propensity score matching for age, gender, and diabetes mellitus between patients with and without fracture, fracture still significantly correlated with MI in HD patients (OR 1.47, P = 0.034) but not in patients with pre-dialysis CKD (OR 1.04, P = 0.751). Subgroup analysis by fracture site found that vertebral fracture was associated with MI in HD patients (OR 2.11, P = 0.024), but femoral or other site fractures were not. CONCLUSION In HD patients, fracture was significantly associated with MI, especially for vertebral fractures patients.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Bone mineral density (BMD) is significantly decreased after gastrectomy in patients with gastric cancer. Calcium malabsorption, secondary hyperparathyroidism, and dominant bone resorption appear to contribute to bone loss in these patients. Patients should undergo early surveillance and nutritional or pharmacologic intensive interventions for bone health. PURPOSE Survivorship care, including bone health, has become an important issue in gastric cancer. We performed a meta-analysis of the available observational studies to determine whether and how osteoporosis risk is increased after gastrectomy in patients with gastric cancer. METHODS A total of 1204 patients (802 men) from 19 cohort studies were included. We evaluated the prevalence of osteoporosis in postgastrectomy patients, comparing the incidence according to the type of gastrectomy and sex. Additionally, we evaluated changes in bone mineral density (BMD) and bone metabolism-related markers pre- to postoperatively and between patients who underwent gastrectomy and matched controls. Proportion meta-analysis was performed and pooled odds ratios (ORs) were calculated. RESULTS The pooled incidence estimate was 36% [95% confidence interval (CI), 32-40]. The incidence of osteoporosis was significantly higher in women than in men (OR = 1.90, p < 0.001) but was similar between partial and total gastrectomy groups (OR = 0.983, p = 0.939). BMD was significantly decreased, and calcium, phosphorous, and parathyroid hormone levels were significantly increased in patients after gastrectomy compared to those before gastrectomy. BMD and calcium and 25OH-vitamin D levels were significantly decreased, and parathyroid hormone and 1,25OH-vitamin D levels were significantly increased in the gastrectomy group compared to that in the control group. CONCLUSION We found that BMD is significantly decreased after gastrectomy in patients with gastric cancer. Vitamin D deficiency and secondary hyperparathyroidism are suggested to be common mechanism underlying BMD impairment. After resection, patients should undergo long-term nutritional and bone health surveillance, in addition to their oncological follow-up.

Abstract
Though controversial, water fluoridation has been hailed as one of the top-ten public-health achievements of the 20th century in the United States of America. In this article, we aim to investigate the public sense of water fluoridation as reflected on Twitter, using data from 2009 to 2017. To this end, tweets related to water fluoridation were collected using queries such as "fluoridated water or fluoride water," "water fluoridation or fluoridation of water," and hashtags related to water fluoridation. The collected tweets (n = 218,748) were examined through informetric, linguistic (word sentiment, word frequency, and word network analyses), and issue tweet analyses. We found that Twitter users who tweeted about water fluoridation in English between 2009 and 2017 constituted about <0.01% of all users including non-English users. In their tweets, words such as "poison" and "waste" were the strong negative sentiment words most often used. Of the top 30 words most frequently used, words related to information sources on water fluoridation and the safety of water fluoridation appeared more often than words related to its efficacy. Additionally, the words related to information sources on water fluoridation and the safety of water fluoridation were found to be core terms in the sentences of tweet mentions. Our linguistic analyses indicate that Twitter users responded sensitively to words that emphasize negative aspects of fluoridation. This is clearly shown in our issue tweet analysis, where tweet mentions expressing negative opinions about water fluoridation accounted for at least 59.2% of all mentions. By contrast, <15% of tweet mentions were found to be positive. These findings suggest that professionals need to reevaluate the current state of online information about water fluoridation, and improve it in a way so that the public can easily access reliable information sources.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Early diagnosis of arteriosclerosis is fundamental for the prevention of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The current study was performed to identify major predictors of arteriosclerosis and to assess the association between arterial stiffness as measured by cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) and muscle mass deficit (MMD) estimated by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in middle-aged men. METHODS AND RESULTS Data were gathered from 3356 middle-aged men who visited a health promotion center. CAVI was measured as an index of arterial stiffness. Body composition analysis was performed using BIA. MMD was positively associated with CAVI in the regression model. The odds ratios for high-CAVI (≥9.0) rose with MMD grade in a dose-dependent manner after adjusting for age, lifestyle factors and current medication use. The estimated mean CAVI rose as MMD grade increased (P for trend >0.001). CONCLUSIONS MMD estimated from BIA was positively associated with arterial stiffness in middle-aged men. These findings show a close interaction between low muscle mass and cardiovascular risk.

Abstract
Fluoride has been widely used for the prevention of dental caries since the mid-20th century. The aim of this study was to investigate the chronologic trends in studies on fluoride mechanisms of action against dental caries during the years 1950 to 2015. To this aim, queries such as "fluoride," "fluoride and demineralization," "fluoride and remineralization," "fluoride and (plaque or biofilms)," and "fluoride and (bacteria or microbials)" were submitted to PubMed to collect research article information, including titles, abstracts, publication dates, author affiliations, and publication journals. The article information that PubMed produced was then collected by an automatic web crawler and examined through informetrics and linguistic analyses. We found that the number of articles concerned with fluoride mechanisms of action against dental caries was 6,903 and gradually increased over time during the years 1950 to 2015. They were published by 1,136 journals-most notably, Caries Research and Journal of Dental Research. Of the articles published, those related to bacteria/microbials had a higher percentage (44%) than those dealing with plaque/biofilms, demineralization, and remineralization. With regard to the geographic distribution of authors, Europe and North America accounted for 65% of the articles during the years 1987 to 2015, although the number of authors in Asia sharply increased in recent years. Among the fluoride compounds, NaF was mentioned more frequently than SnF2, Na2PO3F, amine fluoride, and acidulated phosphate fluoride during the years 1986 to 2015. Water fluoridation received the most attention among the various fluoride application methods (toothpastes, mouthwashes, fluoride varnishes, and fluoride gels) during the same period. These results, obtained from employing informetrics and linguistic analyses, suggest that in studies on fluoride mechanisms of action, 1) the unbalanced geographic distribution of articles and 2) the heavy concentration of articles on particular fluoride compounds and application methods should be overcome in future research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the impact of STA-21, a promising STAT-3 inhibitor, on the development and progression of inflammatory arthritis and to determine the possible mechanisms by which STA-21 has antiarthritic effects in interleukin-1 receptor antagonist-knockout (IL-1Ra-KO) mice, an animal model of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS IL-1Ra-KO mice were treated with intraperitoneal injections of STA-21 (0.5 mg/kg) or vehicle 3 times per week for 3 weeks. The mouse joints were assessed for clinical and histologic features of inflammatory arthritis. CD4+CD25+FoxP3+ Treg cells and CD4+IL-17+ cells were defined. Human peripheral blood mononuclear cell-derived monocytes or mouse bone marrow-derived monocyte/macrophage (BMM) cells were cultured in the presence of macrophage colony-stimulating factor alone or together with RANKL and various concentrations of STA-21, followed by staining of the cells for tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase activity to determine osteoclast formation. RESULTS STA-21 suppressed inflammatory arthritis in IL-1Ra-KO mice. The proportion of Th17 cells was decreased and the proportion of Treg cells expressing FoxP3 was markedly increased in the spleens of STA-21-treated mice. Adoptive transfer of CD4+CD25+ T cells obtained from STA-21-treated IL-1Ra-KO mice markedly suppressed inflammatory arthritis. In vitro treatment with STA-21 induced the expression of FoxP3 and repressed IL-17 expression in both mouse and human CD4+ T cells. Moreover, STA-21 prevented both mouse BMM cells and human monocytes from differentiating into osteoclasts in vitro. CONCLUSION STA-21 improved the clinical course of arthritis in IL-1Ra-KO mice. It increased not only the number of Treg cells but also the function of the Treg cells. It also suppressed Th17 cells and osteoclast formation. These data suggest that STA-21 might be an effective treatment for patients with RA.

Abstract
Nanometer scale thin InAs layer has been incorporated between Si (100) substrate and GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As multiple quantum well (MQW) nanostructure in order to reduce the defects generation during the growth of GaAs buffer layer on Si substrate. Observations based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) suggest that initiation and propagation of defect at the Si/GaAs interface could be suppressed by incorporating thin (1 nm in thickness) InAs layer. Consequently, the microstructure and resulting optical properties improved as compared to the MQW structure formed directly on Si substrate without the InAs layer. It was also observed that there exists some limit to the desirable thickness of the InAs layer since the MQW structure having thicker InAs layer (4 nm-thick) showed deteriorated properties.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the costs of illness, health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and their associated factors in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in South Korea. METHOD Two hundred and one patients with SLE were enrolled at the Rheumatology clinic of Seoul National University Hospital. Direct, indirect and total costs and HRQOL were measured using hospital electronic data and face-to-face interview. Socio-demographic and clinical factors associated with cost of illness and HRQOL were analyzed using multiple regression and multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS The average total cost of illness was estimated to be KRW 9.82 million (US $ 8993) per year, of which 41.6% was accounted for by direct costs and 58.4% by indirect costs. In multivariate regression, patients with renal involvement and those with depression incurred an average increment in annual total costs of 37.6% (p = 0.050) and 49.1% (p = 0.024), respectively, and an average increment in annual direct costs of 26.4% (p = 0.050) and 43.3% (p = 0.002), respectively, compared with patients without renal involvement and depression, respectively. In addition, disease damage was positively associated with an average increment in annual total and direct costs (55.3%, p = 0.006; 33.3%, p = 0.013, respectively), and the occurrence of indirect costs (OR 2.21, 1.09-4.88). There was no significant difference in HRQOL between patients with and without renal involvement (0.655 vs. 0.693, p = 0.203) CONCLUSION: Renal involvement, depression, and disease damage were major factors associated with higher total and medical costs for patients with SLE in South Korea. Effective treatment of renal disorders and depression may reduce the high economic burden of SLE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidural administration of dexamethasone might reduce postoperative pain in adults. We evaluated whether a caudal block of 0.1 mg kg(-1) dexamethasone combined with ropivacaine improves analgesic efficacy in children undergoing day-case orchiopexy. METHODS This randomized, double-blind study included 80 children aged 6 months to 5 yr who underwent day-case, unilateral orchiopexy. Patients received either 1.5 ml kg(-1) of 0.15% ropivacaine (Group C) or 1.5 ml kg(-1) of 0.15% ropivacaine in which dexamethasone of 0.1 mg kg(-1) was mixed (Group D) for caudal analgesia. Postoperative pain scores, rescue analgesic consumption, and side-effects were evaluated 48 h after operation. RESULTS Postoperative pain scores at 6 and 24 h post-surgery were significantly lower in Group D than in Group C. Furthermore, the number of subjects who remained pain free up to 48 h after operation was significantly greater in Group D [19 of 38 (50%)] than in Group C [four of 37 (10.8%); P<0.001]. The number of subjects who received oral analgesic was significantly lower in Group D [11 of 38 (28.9%)] than in Group C [20 of 37 (54.1%); P=0.027]. Time to first oral analgesic administration after surgery was also significantly longer in Group D than in Group C (P=0.014). Adverse events after surgery including vomiting, fever, wound infection, and wound dehiscence were comparable between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS The addition of dexamethasone 0.1 mg kg(-1) to ropivacaine for caudal block can significantly improve analgesic efficacy in children undergoing orchiopexy. Abstract
Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is the most biologically active catechin in green tea. EGCG has been shown to have therapeutic effects in autoinflammatory diseases and obesity. Obesity is currently regarded-partly-as an inflammatory condition because of the inflammatory cytokines and higher Th1 cell differentiation detected in obese animal models and human cohort studies. In this work, the effects of EGCG on diet-induced obesity (DIO) mice and obese collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mice were investigated. EGCG reduced the body weight and fat infiltration in liver tissue while improving serum lipid profiles in DIO mice. EGCG also induced a higher Treg/Th17 cell ratio in CD4(+) T-cell differentiation by decreasing the ratio of STAT3/STAT5 expression in DIO mice. EGCG was also effective in obese CIA mice. Reducing Th17 cells and increasing regulatory T (Treg) cells by affecting the STAT protein ratio were important effects of EGCG that might result in improved arthritic scores and levels of several inflammatory indicators. Thus, EGCG has an anti-inflammatory effect by suppressing STAT3 proteins and Th17-cell differentiation. EGCG thus shows promise for treating autoimmune conditions related to STAT3 or Th17 cells, such as metabolic syndrome, inflammatory arthritis, and some neoplastic diseases.

Abstract
Somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) is now an established procedure used in cloning of several species. SCNT in dogs involves multiple steps including the removal of the nuclear material, injection of a donor cell, fusion, activation of the reconstructed oocytes and finally transfer to a synchronized female recipient. There are therefore many factors that contribute to cloning efficiency. By performing a retrospective analysis of 2005-2012 published papers regarding dog cloning, we define the optimum procedure and summarize the specific feature for dog cloning.

Abstract
Interleukin (IL)-27 is a heterodimeric cytokine that is known to have both stimulatory and inhibitory functions during immune responses. We investigated the effects of IL-27 on arthritis and bone erosion in the murine collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) model. We demonstrate that the inhibitory effect of IL-27 on osteoclastogenesis is associated with interferon-γ (IFN-γ) production by using an IFN-γ knockout mouse model. The IL-27-Fc was injected into both CIA and IFN-γ-deficient mice. The effects of IL-27-Fc on osteoclast differentiation were evaluated both in vitro and in vivo. The IL-27-Fc-injected mice showed significantly lower arthritis indices and fewer tartrate-resistant acid-phosphatase-positive osteoclasts in their joint tissues than untreated mice. Interleukin-27 inhibited osteoclastogenesis from bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells in vitro, which was counteracted by the addition of anti-IFN-γ antibody. The IL-27-Fc did not affect arthritis in IFN-γ knockout mice. Interleukin-27 also suppressed osteoclast differentiation in human and intriguingly, it could promote the expression of IFN-γ on priming osteoclasts. These results imply that IL-27 suppressed the generation of CIA and osteoclastogenesis, which were mediated by the induction of IFN-γ.

Abstract
Th17 cells that produce interleukin (IL)-17 play a key role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune inflammation. Among the various cytokines that are involved in the IL-17 pathway, members of the IL-1β family, including IL-18, have recently gained attention. In this study, we stimulated synovial fibroblasts with a combination of IL-17 and IL-18 and quantified their stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) production by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and their transcript levels by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Both IL-17 and IL-18 significantly increased the level of SDF-1, not only individually but also synergistically (P< 0.05). The synergism was effectively suppressed by anti-IL-17 and -IL-18 antibodies, and a PI3K inhibitor. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of PI3K-dependent synergism between IL-18 and IL-17, and this work adds a novel perspective of the role of IL-18 in immune regulation. The individual effects of these two cytokines, and their interactions, suggest an interrelationship between the IL-1 family and IL-17.

Abstract
Introduction Interleukin (IL)-32 and IL-17 play critical roles in pro-inflammatory responses and are highly expressed in the synovium of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We investigated the relations between these two cytokines (IL-17 and IL-32) for their ability to induce each other and to stimulate osteoclasts in RA fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) and T cells. Methods FLSs were isolated through surgical synovectomy obtained from patients with RA or osteoarthritis (OA). Real-time PCR were performed to evaluate the expression of IL-32, IL-17 and osteoclast-related genes. Immunohistochemical staining and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining were performed to determine the distribution of inflammatory cytokines and the presence of osteoclastogenesis. Results IL-17 induced the expression of IL-32 in the FLSs from RA patients, as assessed by microarray. IL-32 production was increased by IL-17. IL-32 in the FLSs from RA patients induced the production of IL-17 in CD4+ T cells. IL-32 and IL-17 were colocalized near TRAP-positive areas in joint specimens. IL-17 and IL-32 synergistically induced the differentiation of osteoclasts, as demonstrated by the expression of osteoclast-related genes. IL-32 and IL-17 also could induce resorption by osteoclasts in a RANKL-dependent manner. Conclusions IL-17 affected the expression of IL-32 in FLSs of RA patients and IL-32 induced the production of IL-17 in CD4+ T cells. Both IL-17 and IL-32 cytokines can reciprocally influence each other's production and amplify the function of osteoclastogenesis in the in RA synovium. Separately, IL-17 and IL-32 each stimulated osteoclastogenesis without RANKL. Together, the two cytokines synergistically amplified the differentiation of osteoclasts, independent of RANKL stimulation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study compared rate of cell proliferation, viability, cell size, expression patterns of genes related to pluripotency and epigenetic modification between canine foetal fibroblasts (cFF) and canine adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (cAd-MSC). MATERIALS AND METHODS Proliferation pattern, cell viability as well as cell size at each passage of cFF and cAd-MSC were measured when cultures reached confluence. In addition, real-time PCR was performed to investigate expression of Dnmt1, HDAC1, OCT4, SOX2, BAX, BCL2 genes with reference to β-actin gene expression as an endogenous control in both cell lines. RESULTS cFF and cAd-MSC differed in number of generations, but not in doubling times, at all passages. Mean cell size of cAd-MSC was significantly smaller than that of cFF. Cell viability was significantly lower in cFFs and apoptotic level was significantly lower in cAd-MSC compared to passage-matched cFF. In the expression of genes related to pluripotency and epigenetic modification, level of HDAC1 in cAd-MSC was significantly higher than in cFF, but expression of Dnmt1 did not differ between the two groups. OCT4 and SOX2 were significantly more highly expressed in cAd-MSC compared to cFF. CONCLUSIONS cAd-MSC have higher stem-cell potential than cFF in terms of proliferation patterns, epigenetic modification and pluripotency, thus cAd-MSC could be more appropriate than cFF as donors of nuclei in somatic cell nuclear transfer for transgenesis.

Abstract
White fat cells secrete adipokines that induce inflammation and obesity has been reported to be characterized by high serum levels of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-α. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a prototype of inflammatory arthritis, but the relationship between RA and obesity is controversial. We made an obese inflammatory arthritis model: obese collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). C57BL/6 mice were fed a 60-kcal high fat diet (HFD) from the age of 4 weeks and they were immunized twice with type II collagen (CII). After immunization, the obese CIA mice showed higher arthritis index scores and histology scores and a more increased incidence of developing arthritis than did the lean CIA mice. After treatment with CII, mixed lymphocyte reaction also showed CII-specific response more intensely in the obese CIA mice than lean CIA. The anti-CII IgG and anti-CII IgG2a levels in the sera of the obese CIA mice were higher than those of the lean CIA mice. The number of Th17 cells was higher and the IL-17 mRNA expression of the splenocytes in the obese CIA mice was higher than that of the lean CIA mice. Obese CIA mice also showed high IL-17 expression on synovium in immunohistochemistry. Although obesity may not play a pathogenic role in initiating arthritis, it could play an important role in amplifying the inflammation of arthritis through the Th1/Th17 response. The obese CIA murine model will be an important tool when we investigate the effect of several therapeutic target molecules to treat RA.

IL-17 producing Th17 has a key role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune inflammation. Among various cytokines which are interwoven with the IL-17 pathway, members of IL-1beta family including IL-18 have recently gained significance. In the present study, we stimulated synovial fibroblasts with the combination of IL-17 and IL-18, and quantified the cellular production of stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) with ELISA and its mRNA with RT-PCR. Both IL-17 and IL-18 significantly increased the level of SDF-1, not only individually but also synergistically (p<0.05). The synergism was effectively suppressed by anti-IL-17, anti-IL-18 antibodies and PI3K inhibitor. In conclusion, PI3K-dependent synergism between IL-18 and IL-17 is first observed in this study, and adds a novel perspective for the role of IL-18 in immune regulation. The two cytokines’ individual effects, mutual interaction and synergism draw a crisscrossing map between IL-1 family and IL-17.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The study was undertaken to investigate the interrelation of toll-like receptor (TLR) and interleukin (IL)-17 in the salivary glands of patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS) and to determine the role of TLR and IL-17 in the pathophysiology of pSS. METHODS The expressions of various TLRs, IL-17 and the cytokines involved in Th17 cell differentiation including IL-6, IL-23, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and IL-1β were examined by immunohistochemistry in salivary glands of pSS patients. The IL-17 producing CD4+ T cells (Th17 cells) were examined by flow cytometry and confocal staining in peripheral mononuclear blood cells (PMBCs) and salivary glands of pSS patients. After PBMCs were treated with TLR specific ligands, the induction of IL-17 and IL-23 was determined using real-time PCR and ELISA. The signaling pathway that mediates the TLR2 stimulated production of IL-17 and IL-23 was investigated by using treatment with specific signaling inhibitors. RESULTS We showed that TLR2, TLR4, TLR6, IL-17 and the cytokines associated with Th17 cells were highly expressed in salivary glands of pSS patients but not in controls. The expressions of TLR2, TLR4 and TLR6 were observed in the infiltrating mononuclear cells and ductal epithelial cells, whereas IL-17 was mainly observed in infiltrating CD4+ T cells. The number of IL-17 producing CD4+ T cells was significantly higher in pSS patients both in PBMCs and minor salivary glands. The stimulation of TLR2, TLR4 and TLR6 additively induced the production of IL-17 and IL-23 from the PBMCs of pSS patients especially in the presence of TLR2 stimulation. IL-6, signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kB) pathways were implicated in the TLR2 stimulated IL-17 and IL-23. CONCLUSIONS Our data demonstrate that TLR2 ligation induces the production of IL-23/IL-17 via IL-6, STAT3 and NF-kB pathway in pSS. Therefore, therapeutic strategies that target TLR/IL-17 pathway might be strong candidates for treatment modalities of pSS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the immediate and long-term therapeutic efficacies of Gufoni and head-shaking maneuvers in apogeotropic type of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo involving the horizontal semicircular canal (HC-BPPV), a randomized, prospective, sham-controlled study was conducted. METHODS In 10 nationwide dizziness clinics in Korea, 157 consecutive patients (95 women, age range: 18-89 years, mean age ± SD = 59.9 ± 13.6) with apogeotropic HC-BPPV were randomized to Gufoni (n = 52), head-shaking (n = 54), or sham maneuver (n = 51). For Gufoni maneuver, patients underwent ipsilesional side-lying and upward head-turn for migration of the debris toward the vestibule. Immediate responses were determined within 1 hour after a maximum of 2 trials of each maneuver and in the following day. The patients also had weekly follow-ups for 1 month after the initial maneuver. RESULTS After a maximum of 2 maneuvers on the initial visit day, Gufoni (38/52, 73.1%) and head-shaking (33/53, 62.3%) maneuvers showed better responses than the sham maneuver (17/49, 34.7%). The cumulative therapeutic effects were also better with Gufoni (p < 0.001) and head-shaking (p = 0.026) maneuvers compared with the sham maneuver. However, therapeutic efficacies did not differ between the Gufoni and head-shaking groups in terms of both immediate (p = 0.129) and long-term (p = 0.239) outcomes. CONCLUSION Using a prospective randomized trial, we demonstrated that the Gufoni and head-shaking maneuvers are effective in treating apogeotropic HC-BPPV. CLASSIFICATION OF EVIDENCE This study provides Class II evidence that Gufoni and head-shaking maneuvers are effective in treating apogeotropic horizontal BPPV up to 1 month after initial treatment. Abstract
BACKGROUND CD4(+)Fop3(+) regulatory T cells (Tregs) are needed to maintain peripheral tolerance, but their role in the development of autoimmune arthritis is still debated. The present study was undertaken to investigate the mechanism by which Tregs influence autoimmune arthritis, using a mouse model entitled K/BxN. METHODS We generated Treg-deficient K/BxNsf mice by congenically crossing K/BxN mice with Foxp3 mutant scurfy mice. The arthritic symptoms of the mice were clinically and histopathologically examined. The proportions and activation of CD4(+) T cells and/or dendritic cells were assessed in the spleens, draining lymph nodes and synovial tissue of these mice. RESULTS K/BxNsf mice exhibited earlier onset and more aggressive progression of arthritis than their K/BxN littermates. In particular, bone destruction associated with the influx of numerous RANKL+ cells into synovia was very prominent. They also contained more memory phenotype CD4(+) T cells, more Th1 and Th2 cells, and fewer Th17 cells than their control counterparts. Plasmacytoid dendritic cells expressing high levels of CD86 and CD40 were elevated in the K/BxNsf synovia. CONCLUSION We conclude that Tregs oppose the progression of arthritis by inhibiting the development of RANKL(+) cells, homeostatically proliferating CD4(+) T cells, Th1, Th2 and mature plasmacytoid dendritic cells, and by inhibiting their influx into joints.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can prevent various autoimmune diseases. We examined the therapeutic potential of transforming growth factor β (TGFβ)-transduced MSCs in experimental autoimmune arthritis, using an accepted animal model of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). METHODS DBA/1J mice with CIA were treated with syngeneic TGFβ-induced MSCs, whereas control mice received either vehicle or MSCs alone. Arthritis severity was assessed by clinical and histologic scoring. TGFβ-transduced MSCs were tested for their immunosuppressive ability and differential regulation in mice with CIA. T cell responses to type II collagen were evaluated by determining proliferative capacity and cytokine levels. The effects of TGFβ-transduced MSCs on osteoclast formation were analyzed in vitro and in vivo. RESULTS Systemic infusion of syngeneic TGFβ-transduced MSCs prevented arthritis development and reduced bone erosion and cartilage destruction. Treatment with TGFβ-transduced MSCs potently suppressed type II collagen-specific T cell proliferation and down-regulated proinflammatory cytokine production. These therapeutic effects were associated with an increase in type II collagen-specific CD4+FoxP3+ Treg cells and inhibition of Th17 cell formation in the peritoneal cavity and spleen. Furthermore, TGFβ-transduced MSCs inhibited osteoclast differentiation. CONCLUSION TGFβ-transduced MSCs suppressed the development of autoimmune arthritis and joint inflammation. These data suggest that enhancing the immunomodulatory activity of MSCs and modulating T cell-mediated immunity using gene-modified MSCs may be a gateway for new therapeutic approaches to clinical rheumatoid arthritis.

Abstract
Several studies have previously been conducted regarding cell cycle synchronization in mammalian somatic cells. However, limited work has been performed on the control of cell cycle stages in the somatic cells of fish. The aim of this study was to determine the cell cycle arresting effects of several dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) concentrations for different times on different cell cycle stages of goldfish caudal fin-derived fibroblasts. Results demonstrated that the cycling cells or control group (68.29%) yields significantly higher (p < 0.05) arrest in G0/G1 phase compared with the group treated for 24 h with different concentrations (0.5%, 1.0% or 1.5%) of DMSO (64.88%, 65.70%, 64.22% respectively). The cell cycle synchronization in the treatment of cells with 1.0% DMSO at 48 h (81.14%) was significantly higher than that in the groups treated for 24 h (76.82%) and the control group (77.90%). Observations showed that treatment of DMSO resulted in an increase in the proportion of cells at G0/G1 phase for 48 h of culture. However, high levels of apoptotic cells can be detected after 48 h of culture treated with 1% concentration of DMSO.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS This study was undertaken to identify the intracellular signaling pathway involved in induction of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) in human rheumatoid arthritis (RA) synovial fibroblasts. METHODS Human RA synovial fibroblasts were treated with concanavalin A (ConA), various cytokines, and inhibitors of signal transduction molecules. The production of MIF by synovial fibroblasts was measured in culture supernatants by ELISA. The expression of MIF mRNA was determined using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and real-time PCR. Phosphorylation of p38 mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase in synovial fibroblasts was confirmed using Western blotting. The expression of MIF and p38 MAP kinase in RA synovium was determined using dual immunohistochemistry. RESULTS The production of MIF by RA synovial fibroblasts increased in a dose-dependent manner after ConA stimulation. MIF was also induced by interferon-γ, CD40 ligand, interleukin-15, interleukin-1β, tumor necrosis factor-α, and transforming growth factor-β. The production of MIF by RA synovial fibroblasts was significantly reduced after inhibition of p38 MAP kinase. The expression of MIF and p38 MAP kinase was upregulated in the RA synovium compared with the osteoarthritis synovium. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that MIF production was induced through a p38 MAP-kinase-dependent pathway in RA synovial fibroblasts.

Abstract
To determine factors that affect the efficiency of dog cloning by somatic cell nuclear transfer, the present study was performed to investigate 1) the effects of surgical history (non-operated/operated) and parity (nullipara/multipara) on the recovery of in vivo canine oocytes; 2) the effects of surgical history and parity of recipients on the pregnancy and delivery; and 3) the effects of synchronization state (AA, advanced asynchrony; SY, synchrony; RA, retarded asynchrony) between oocytes donor and recipient on the pregnancy and delivery. Oocyte recovery rate was significantly higher in non-operated dogs compared to operated dogs (93.8 vs. 89.6%, P < 0.05) and not different between nulliparous dogs and multiparous dogs. Delivery rate was also significantly higher in non-operated dogs compared to operated dogs (2.8 vs. 1.0%, P < 0.05) and in nulliparous dogs than multiparous dogs (3.0 vs. 1.7%, P < 0.05). Even though SY showed increased pregnancy and delivery rate (20.0% and 3.0%) compared to AA (15.0% and 2.0%) and RA (0.0% and 0.0%), there was no significant difference. In conclusion, we recommend non-operated dogs as experimental dogs and nulliparous dogs as recipient dogs to increase delivery rate after transfer of somatic cell nuclear transferred embryos, but further study is needed to find out appropriate synchrony status at the transfer.

Abstract
This communication describes the application of a modified sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), termed Multimer Detection System (MDS) for the detection of disease-associated multimeric forms of the prion protein (PrPd) in hamster blood. PrPd was detected in plasma of prion-affected hamsters while MDS revealed no PrPd in identically-treated plasma of healthy animals. This is the first report of a single ELISA- based immune detection of PrPd from blood samples.

Abstract
Interleukin (IL)-23 stimulates T lymphocytes to produce inflammatory molecules, which can cause inflammatory arthritis. This study was undertaken to explore the role of IL-23 in stimulating the expression of the receptor activator of the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kappaB) ligand (RANKL) and osteoclastogenic activity in human fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS). These cells were separated from the synovium of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA-FLS) and osteoarthritis (OA-FLS) and stimulated with IL-23. RANKL expression was measured by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and immunostaining. Osteoclast precursor cells were cocultured with IL-23-stimulated RA-FLS and OA-FLS and subsequently stained for tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) activity. IL-23 upregulated RANKL expression in RA-FLS. The expression of RANKL mRNA and protein was blocked completely by inhibitors of NF-kappaB (parthenolide) or of the JAK II-STAT3 pathway (AG490), showing that the RANKL expression pathway is mediated by NF-kappaB and STAT3. TRAP-positive osteoclastogenesis was enhanced in IL-23-stimulated FLS. RA-FLS were more responsive to IL-23 in terms of their RANKL expression than OA-FLS or normal FLS. Thus, IL-23 appears to induce joint inflammation and bone destruction by stimulating RANKL expression in RA-FLS. These interactions between IL-23 and FLS indicate possible new therapeutic approaches for treating bone destruction in patients with inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of activin A on the developmental competence of in vitro fertilized (IVF) bovine embryos derived from a two-step defined culture system (C1/C2 medium) during the early or later stages of embryo development. To evaluate the effects of activin A on transcriptional levels, we analysed genes related to blastocyst hatching and implantation and to activin signalling pathway in IVF embryos. Cumulus-oocyte complexes were matured for 22 h and fertilized in vitro. Presumptive zygotes were cultured in the presence or absence of activin A during early (0-120 h, C1) or later (120-192 h, C2) stages. Although the developmental competence of embryos cultured with activin A in C1 medium was not significantly different from their corresponding controls, development to blastocysts (22.4% vs 34.7%; p < 0.05) and the blastocyst hatching rate (9.3% vs 22.4%; p < 0.05) in C2 medium supplemented with 100 ng/ml activin A were significantly higher than in the control group. To evaluate the effect of activin A on transcription, the relative expression levels of genes related to blastocyst hatching and implantation (Na/K-ATPase, E-cad and Glut-1) as well as activin signalling pathway (ActRII, ActRIIB and Smad2) were analysed. Compared to control medium, gene expression of Na/K-ATPase, E-cad, Glut-1, ActRII and ActRIIB was increased in medium supplemented with activin A. In conclusion, this study suggests that activin A, during the later stage of in vitro bovine embryo development, can enhance in vitro development of embryos by increasing hatching rates and affecting expression levels of genes related to hatching and implantation in defined culture medium.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression of IL-16 in the rheumatoid synovium and the role of inflammatory cytokines and Toll-like receptor (TLR) ligands in IL-16 production by fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. Immunohistochemical staining was performed with a monoclonal antibody to IL-16 in synovial tissues from patients with RA and likewise in patients with osteoarthritis (OA). FLS were isolated from RA synovial tissues and stimulated with IL-15, IL-1beta, IFN-gamma, and IL-17. The IL-16 mRNA level was assessed by semiquantitative RT-PCR and real time (RT) PCR and a comparison was made between IL-16 mRNA levels produced by RA-FLS and OA-FLS. Production of IL-16 was identified by a western blot assay, and IL-16 production after stimulation by specific ligands of TLR2 and TLR4 was assessed by RT-PCR. While immunohistochemical staining demonstrated strong expression of IL-16 mRNA in synovial tissues from patients with RA, similar findings were not present in the OA group. Moreover, mRNA expression of IL-16 by RA-FLS increased after treatment with IL-17 but not with IL-15, IL-1beta, and IFN-gamma. Specifically, IL-17 increased IL-16 mRNA level by RA-FLS and peripheral blood mononuclear cells in a dose-dependent manner. However, IL-17 did not stimulate IL-16 production in OA-FLS. Peptidoglycan, a selective TLR2 ligand, also increased production of IL-16 by RA-FLS dose- dependently, whereas LPS, a selective TLR4 ligand, had no such stimulatory effect. The results from our data demonstrate that IL-17 and TLR2 ligands stimulate the production of IL-16 by RA-FLS.

Abstract
N-tosyl-l-phenylalanine chloromethyl ketone (TPCK) is known to inhibit NF-kappaB activation and the expression of inflammation mediators in cultured cells. We measured the potential of TPCK to inhibit the pathogenesis of collagen-induced arthritis by blocking NF-kappaB activation. Arthritis was induced in DBA/1J mice by the injection of bovine type II collagen in adjuvant on days 0 and 14. Mice received either TPCK (3 or 10 mg/kg, i.p.) or vehicle three times a week for 3 weeks starting on day 21. TPCK moderately reduced clinical disease activity scores, whereas it markedly suppressed histological indications of joint destruction. In vitro production of tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 from lipopolysaccharide-stimulated spleen cells was also reduced by in vivo treatment with TPCK. Proliferation of cells isolated from spleen or draining lymph nodes and production of interferon-gamma and interleukin-17 in response to stimulation with type II collagen was decreased by TPCK. Moreover, nuclear NF-kappaB activity induced by collagen immunization was significantly reduced in mice treated with TPCK. Finally, osteoclast differentiation of bone marrow cells induced by macrophage colony-stimulating factor and receptor activator of NF-kappaB ligand was completely inhibited by TPCK. These results indicate that TPCK attenuates collagen-induced arthritis and bone erosion by suppressing NF-kappaB activation and thus expression of inflammatory and osteoclastogenic genes.

Abstract
The receptor activator of nuclear factor kappaB ligand (RANKL) is an osteoclastogenic mediator, which is mainly expressed by stromal cells and osteoblast. However, T cells can also be an important provider for RANKL in special condition such as autoimmune arthritis. We examined the RANKL expression of hyporesponsive CD4+ T cells induced by oral feeding with type II collagen in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mice. The potential of RANKL expression in CD4+ T cells was downregulated in tolerance, as compared with CIA. One of possible explanations for this phenomenon is that CII-specific T cell activation was intrinsically impaired in oral tolerance, which caused suppression of RANKL expression of CD4+ T cells. We also investigated the extrinsic role of cytokine in this process. IL-17, well-known pro-inflammatory cytokine was upregulated in CIA and downregulated in tolerance. IL-17 had a potential to stimulate T cells to express RANKL in dose-dependent manner. IL-17-associated RANKL expression of CD4+ T cells was downregulated in oral tolerance, suggesting that the induction of tolerance ameliorates IL-17-induced RANKL expression of T cells in murine CIA. We also discovered that CIA - T cells could enhance osteoclastogenesis but not oral tolerance - T cells. Oral tolerance might be promising therapeutic option in viewpoints of modulating autoreactivity of CII which can induce not only IL-17 production but also RANKL expression in CD4+ T cells.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study on canine somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) was to evaluate the effects of fusion strength, type of activation, culture media and site of transfer on developmental potential of SCNT embryos. We also examined the potential of enucleated bovine oocytes to serve as cytoplast recipients of canine somatic cells. Firstly, we evaluated the morphological characteristics of in vivo-matured canine oocytes collected by retrograde flushing of the oviducts 72 h after ovulation. Secondly, the effectiveness of three electrical strengths (1.8, 2.3 and 3.3 kV/cm), used twice for 20 micros, on fusion of canine cytoplasts with somatic cells were compared. Then, we compared: (1) chemical versus electrical activation (a) after parthenogenetic activation or (b) after reconstruction of canine oocytes with somatic cells; (2) culture of resulting intergeneric (IG) embryos in either (a) mSOF or (b) TCM-199. The exposure time to 6-DMAP was standardized by using bovine oocytes reconstructed with canine somatic cells. Bovine oocytes were used for SCNT after a 22 h in vitro maturation interval. The fusion rate was significantly higher in the 3.3 kV/cm group than in the 1.8 and 2.3 kV/cm treatment groups. After parthenogenesis or SCNT with chemical activation, 3.4 and 5.8%, respectively, of the embryos developed to the morula stage, as compared to none of the embryos produced using electrical activation. Later developmental stages (8-16 cells) were transferred to the uterine horn of eight recipients, but no pregnancy was detected. However, IG cloned embryos (bovine cytoplast/canine somatic cell) were capable of in vitro blastocyst development. In vitro developmental competence of IG cloned embryos was improved after exposure to 6-DMAP for 4 h as compared to 0, 2 or 6h exposure, although the increase was not significantly different among culture media. In summary, for production of canine SCNT embryos, we recommend fusion at 3.3 kV/cm, chemical activation, culture in mSOF medium and transfer of presumptive zygotes to the oviduct of recipient animals. The feasibility of IG production of cloned canine embryos using bovine cytoplasts as recipient of canine somatic cells was demonstrated.

Abstract
To investigate the role of CD8alpha(+) DCs in the development of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). The immunogenic properties of CD8alpha(+) and CD8alpha(-) DC subsets were investigated by mixed-lymphocyte reaction and cytokine enzyme-linked immunoassay. CII-pulsed CD8alpha(+) DCs or CD8alpha(-) DCs with CD4(+) T cells from CIA mice were adoptively transferred onto the hind footpad of DBA mice. The onset of arthritis and the arthritis index were examined for 14 weeks after adoptive transfer. Expression of MHC-II and CD80 but not CD86 and CD40 was higher in CD8alpha(+) DCs than in CD8alpha(-) DCs from the spleens of CIA mice. Culturing CD8alpha(+) DCs with CD4(+) T cells significantly increased the proliferative response of CD4(+) T cells in the presence of CII. The production of interleukin (IL)-12p70, IL-17, interferon (IFN)-gamma, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha was slightly increased in CD8alpha(+) DCs than in CD8alpha(-) DCs. DBA/1 mice that were adoptively transferred with CII-pulsed CD8alpha(+) DCs and CD4(+) T cells into the footpads showed accelerated onset of CIA compared to control group. By contrast, CD8alpha(-) DCs showed a partial inhibitory effect on CIA. These findings show that CD8alpha(+) DCs accelerated the onset of CIA when aoptively transferred with CD4(+) T cells and that CD8alpha(+) DCs provoke the development of CIA probably by stimulating the immune responses of CII-reactive CD4(+) T cells and by increasing the production of inflammatory cytokines.

Abstract
The interplay between the innate immune system and inflammatory bone destruction in the joints of individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remains unclear. This study was undertaken to explore the effect of toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling in fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) on the expression of RANKL and induction of osteoclastogenic activity. The levels of RANKL mRNA and protein were measured using RT-PCR, real-time PCR, and immunostaining. Monocytes were cocultured with RA -FLS that had been stimulated with TLR ligands in fresh media and subsequently stained for tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) activity. Osteoclast molecule markers were measured using real-time PCR. Expression of TLR-2 and TLR-4 was higher in RA-FLS than in OA-FLS and normal skin fibroblasts. TLR-2 and TLR-4 ligands induced RANKL expression in RA-FLS. TLR stimulation of RA-FLS also induced the production of IL-1beta and TNF-alpha to a lesser extent; however, it had no effect on IL-17 production. Inhibition of TLR induced IL-1beta production, which partially reversed the upregulation of RANKL induced by TLR ligands. RA-FLS stimulated by TLR-2 and TLR-4 ligands and cocultured with human monocytes induced high levels of expression of TRAP, RANK, cathepsin K, calcitonin receptor, and matrix metalloproteinase-9, suggesting that RA-FLS promote osteoclast differentiation. Our results suggest that the TLR signaling pathway, through TLR-2 and TLR-4, induces RANKL expression in RA-FLS and the expression of RANKL promotes the differentiation of osteoclasts in RA synovium. Targeting specific TLRs may be a promising approach to prevent inflammatory bone destruction in the pathogenesis of RA.

Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is characterized by infiltrations of inflammatory cells accompanied by neovascularization in the joint. We hypothesized that cell activation via the toll-like receptor (TLR) may be involved in the induction of angiogenic molecules, which are relevant to the pathogenesis of RA. RA fibroblast like synoviocytes (FLS) were stimulated with TLR-2 ligand bacterial peptidoglycan (PGN), TLR-4 ligand lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and various cytokines. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and IL-8 were measured by ELISA in culture supernatants; mRNA levels were assessed by RT-PCR and real time PCR. The levels of TLR-2, VEGF and IL-8 were analyzed by dual immunohistochemistry in RA synovium and compared with osteoarthritis (OA). Regulation of MyD88, IRAK4, IRAK1, IRAK-M and TRAF-6 mRNA expression levels by PGN were analyzed by RT-PCR. Phosphorylation of I kappa B alpha was evaluated by western blotting. Levels of VEGF and IL-8 were upregulated in culture supernatants of RA FLS stimulated with PGN, similar to the levels of IL-1beta and IL-17 stimulation. Neutralization of TLR-2 with a blocking monoclonal antibody significantly reduced both VEGF and IL-8 levels (P<0.05), which reflected the functional relevance of TLR-2 activation to the induction of VEGF and IL-8 production. Downstream intracellular signaling following TLR-2 stimulation involved MyD88-IRAK-4-TRAF-6 pathways, resulting in NF-kappaB activation. Thus, TLR-2 activation in RA FLS by microbial constituents could be involved in the induction of VEGF and IL-8 and thereby promote inflammation either directly or via angiogenesis. This possibly contributes to the perpetuation of synovitis in patients with RA.

Abstract
Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are pattern-recognition receptors that connect innate and adaptive immunity. Interleukin-15 (IL-15) is a proinflammatory, innate response cytokine that mediates pleiotropic effector functions in inflammatory synovitis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The aim of this study was to clarify whether stimulation of TLR2 and TLR4 by their specific ligands induces the production of IL-15 in fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) from RA patients. FLS were isolated from RA synovial tissues and stimulated with the TLR2 ligand bacterial peptidoglycan (PGN) and the TLR4 ligand lipopolysaccharide (LPS). IL-15 in the culture supernatants was measured by ELISA, and mRNA levels were assessed by RT-PCR and real time PCR. The expression of TLR2, TLR4, and IL-15 in the RA synovium was quantified by immunohistochemistry and compared with values obtained in osteoarthritis synovium. IL-15 production increased in culture supernatants of RA FLS stimulated with PGN or PGN plus LPS, and this was upregulated at the transcriptional level. In contrast, LPS did not increase the level of IL-15 although it augmented the stimulatory effect of PGN on IL-15 production. Inhibition of nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB with a specific inhibitor abrogated the stimulatory effect of PGN or PGN plus LPS on IL-15. Neutralization of TLR2 with a blocking monoclonal antibody significantly reduced IL-15 production (P<0.05), reflecting the functional relevance of TLR2 activation in the induction of IL-15 production. These data suggest that TLR2 activation in RA FLS by microbial constituents is involved in the induction of IL-15 and that TLR2 promotes inflammation through NF-kappaB. TLR4 augmented the stimulatory effect of TLR2 on IL-15, possibly contributing to the maintenance of synovitis in patients with RA.

Abstract
Since the only viable cloned offspring born in dogs was a male, the purpose of the present study was to produce female puppies by somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT). Adult ear fibroblasts from a 2-month-old female Afghan hound were isolated and used as donor cells. In vivo-matured canine oocytes surgically collected (approximately 72h after ovulation) from the oviducts of 23 donors were used for SCNT. After removal of the cumulus cells, oocytes were enucleated, microinjected, fused with a donor cell, and activated. A total of 167 reconstructed SCNT embryos were surgically transferred (Day 0) into the oviducts of 12 recipient bitches (average 13.9 embryos/recipient, range 6-22) with spontaneous, synchronous estrous cycles. Three pregnancies were detected by ultrasonography on Day 23, maintained to term, and three healthy female puppies (520, 460, and 520g), were delivered by Caesarean section on Day 60. These puppies were phenotypically and genotypically identical to the cell donor. In conclusion, we have provided the first demonstration that female dogs can be produced by nuclear transfer of ear fibroblasts into enucleated canine oocytes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This cross-sectional study evaluated the association between serum minerals and body mass index in adult women. METHODS One hundred and eighteen adult women were recruited by written advertisement from outpatient clinics or a health promotion center at a university hospital. Serum calcium, magnesium, copper and zinc were measured by an automatic analytical instrument and body mass index was calculated from height and weight. RESULTS Serum magnesium was inversely associated with body mass index (beta=-0.283, P=0.001) whereas serum copper had a positive association with body mass index (beta=0.197, P=0.025) after adjusting for age, physical activity, energy intake, dietary fat, alcohol consumption, supplements and menopause status. No associations were found with serum calcium and zinc. CONCLUSION Serum magnesium and copper may be involved in the regulation of body size in adult women.

Abstract
Although isolated systolic hypertension (ISH) increases the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke, more than any other hypertension subtype, the prevalence and risk factors associated with ISH in the Korean population are not known. The 2001 Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey was a cross-sectional and nationally representative survey conducted in 2001. The prevalence of ISH by age and body mass index (BMI) was examined in 6601 Korean adults over 20 years of age. After adjusting for age, 4.32+/-0.32% of Korean adults had ISH, 5.28+/-0.37% had isolated diastolic hypertension and 5.82+/-0.36% had systolic/diastolic hypertension. The overall prevalence of ISH was found to increase directly with advancing age and increasing BMI. Although the ISH was found to be more common in men overall (4.81+/-0.50% in men, 4.12+/-0.37% in women), it was more common in women over 70 years of age. Independent variables associated with risk for ISH included advanced age, BMI, triglyceride (TG) levels, monthly income and alcohol intake. However, gender, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, residential area, education level and smoking were found not to be significantly associated with ISH risk. The findings of the present study demonstrate that the prevalence of untreated ISH in Korea was lower than in Western countries. Age, BMI, TG levels, monthly income and alcohol intake were associated with ISH.

Abstract
The focus of this paper is on the fabrication of a PDMS-based passive efficient micromixer to be easily integrated into the other on-chip microfluidic system. The mixing is achieved by "strong stretching and folding," which employs a three-dimensional microchannel structure. By the simultaneously vertical and transversal dispersion of fluids, strong advection is developed. Owing to this powerful mixing performance (more than 70% of the mixing is accomplished within 2.3 mm over a wide range of Reynold number (Re)), the smaller integrative mixer can be realized. The feasibility and the potential usefulness of an integrative micromixer were evaluated by incorporating two mixers into the microchannel for the spectroscopic detection of a glucose-catalyst reaction. The results demonstrate a promising performance for diverse applications in the assay or synthesis of biological or chemical materials.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the catalytic role of granular activated carbon (GAC), and metal (Mn or Fe) doped-GAC, on the transformation of ozone into more reactive secondary radicals, such as hydroxyl radicals (*OH), for the treatment of wastewater. The GAC doped with Mn showed the highest catalytic performance in terms of ozone decomposition into OH radicals. Likewise, activated carbon alone accelerated the ozone decomposition, resulting in the formation of *OH radicals. In the presence of promoters, the ozone depletion rate was enhanced further by the Mn-GAC catalyst system, even under aqueous acidic pH conditions.

Abstract
This study was conducted to illustrate an ideal method for characterizing natural waters for ozonation processes in drinking water treatment plants. A specific instrument designed with the flow injection analysis (FIA) technique enabled us to measure accurately the ozone decomposition rate, which was found to consist of two stages: the instantaneous ozone consumption stage and the slower ozone decay stage. The ozone consumption rate was measured at the initial and secondary stages by determining certain parameters called the instantaneous ozone demand (ID) and the pseudo first-order decay rate constant (k(c)). Using the OH*-probe, the yield of OH* per consumed ozone was also measured to determine its potential to produce OH* for the oxidation of micropollutants during the ozonation process. The ozone consumption of the ID values was significant in most natural waters, and substantial amounts of OH* were found to generate during the instantaneous ozone consumption stage. This study also investigated the effects of particulates, ozone doses, and sequential ozone injection on ozone decomposition kinetics and OH* formation yield.

Abstract
Understanding the metabolic changes in women is one of the important ways to prevent and treat osteoporosis. To reveal the metabolic characteristics of 289 healthy women aged between 35-65 yr in Tae-An, Korea we evaluated the association between bone mass assessed by broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) using quantitative ultrasound 2 (QUS2) and various parameters such as age, body mass index, serum levels of alkaline phosphatase, calcium, phosphorus, parathyroid hormone, 25(OH)D, and urinary ratios of calcium/creatinine and deoxypyridinoline (Dpyd)/creatinine. Among the subjects, 3.0% were osteoporotic, and 40.9% were osteopenic. When the subjects were classified according to their years since menopause (YSM) and age, the prevalence of osteoporosis increased along with an increase of YSM and age. Bone turnover markers such as serum alkaline phosphatase and fasting urinary Dpyd/creatinine were significantly higher in the group with low bone mass than in the normal group. In summary, this study shows, by use of biochemical markers of bone turnover and QUS2, the prevalence of osteoporosis in women aged between 35-65 in Tae-An was 3.0% and the risk of low bone mass increased with the bone turnover markers.
