Evidence from a meta-analysis for association of MC4R rs17782313 and FTO rs9939609 polymorphisms with susceptibility to obesity in children

BACKGROUND AND AIM

The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of MC4R rs17782313 and FTO rs9939609 polymorphisms with childhood obesity.

METHODS

A universal search was performed up to May 2021.

RESULTS

A total of 31 studies including 13 studies with 9565 cases and 11956 controls on MC4R rs17782313 and 18 studies with 4789 cases and 15918 controls on FTO rs9939609 were selected.

CONCLUSIONS

Pooled data showed that FTO rs9930506 and MC4R rs17782313 polymorphisms were significantly associated with obesity in children. Stratified analyses revealed that these genetic variants were associated with childhood obesity in Caucasian and Asian children.

Association of PON1, LEP and LEPR Polymorphisms with Susceptibility to Breast Cancer: A Meta-Analysis

OBJECTIVE

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women, except for skin cancers. In this meta-analysis, the associations of polymorphisms within paraoxonase 1 (PON1), leptin (LEP) and leptin receptor (LEPR) genes with susceptibility to breast cancer were comprehensively evaluated.

METHODS

A universal search in PubMed, Scopus, CNKI, SID, Web of Knowledge and Google Scholar was performed to identify relevant studies up to 01 May, 2021. The strength of the associations was estimated by Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs).

RESULTS

A total of 39 case-control studies including 7 studies with 2005 cases and 2748 controls were on PON1 rs662, 6 studies with 2,031 cases and 1,973 controls on PON1 rs854560, 12 studies with 3,444 cases and 3,583 controls on LEP rs7799039, and 14 studies with 5,330 cases and 6,188 controls on LEPR rs1137101 were selected. Pooled data showed that PON1 rs662 and rs854560 polymorphisms were associated with risk of breast cancer in overall population, but not LEP rs7799039 and LEPR rs1137101.

CONCLUSIONS

Our pooled data revealed that the PON1 rs662 and rs854560 polymorphisms were significantly associated with an increased risk of breast cancer in the overall population. However, LEP rs7799039 and LEPR rs1137101 polymorphisms were not associated.

A meta-analysis for association of TNF-α -308G>A polymorphism with susceptibility to Ankylosing Spondylitis

Objective

We performed a meta-analysis of all eligible studies on the association of TNF-α -308G>A polymorphism with risk of Ankylosing spondylitis (AS).

Methods

A comprehensive literature research was performed in online databases.

Results

A total of 28 studies with 4489 cases and 5919 controls were included. Pooled ORs showed a significant association between TNF-α -308G>A polymorphism and risk of AS. Moreover, stratified analysis by ethnicity showed a significant association between TNF-α -308G>A polymorphism and AS risk in Asians, Caucasians and Mixed populations, but not in Chinese population.

Conclusion

This meta-analysis suggested that the TNF-α -308G>A polymorphism was associated with AS risk.

A Meta-Analysis for Association of XRCC1, XRCC2 and XRCC3 Polymorphisms with Susceptibility to Thyroid Cancer

Background:

We conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis to explore the association of polymorphisms at XRCC1, XRCC2 and XRCC3 genes with susceptibility to thyroid cancer (TC).

Methods:

We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and CNKI for relevant available studies. The pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to evaluate the strength of the associations.

Results:

A total of 67 studies including 17 studies with 6,806 cases and 5,229 controls on XRCC1 Arg399Gln, 13 studies with 3,234 cases and 4,807 controls on XRCC1 Arg280His, 13 studies with 2,956 cases and 3,860 controls on XRCC1 Arg194Trp, five studies with 1,287 cases and 1,422 controls on XRCC2 Arg188His, 13 studies with 2,488 cases and 3,586 controls on XRCC3 Thr241Met, and six studies with 1,828 cases and 2,060 controls on XRCC3 IVS5-14 polymorphism were selected. Polled data revealed that the XRCC1 Arg399Gln, Arg280His, Arg194Trp, XRCC2 Arg188His and XRCC3 Thr241Met and IVS5-14 polymorphisms were not significantly associated with an increased risk of TC. Stratified analyses by ethnicity showed that the XRCC1 Arg399Gln polymorphism was associated with TC risk in Caucasians, but not in Asians.

Conclusions:

Our meta-analysis indicated that the XRCC1 Arg399Gln, Arg280His, Arg194Trp, XRCC2 Arg188His, XRCC3 Thr241Met and IVS5-14 polymorphisms were not associated with risk of TC in the global population. Further well-designed investigations with large sample sizes are required to confirm our results.

Proportion and mortality of Iranian diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, hypertension and cardiovascular disease patients with COVID-19: a meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Currently, the number of patients with SARS-COV-2 infection has increased rapidly in Iran, but the risk and mortality of SARS-COV-2 infection in Iranian patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), chronic kidney disease (CKD), hypertension and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) still not clear. The aim of this meta-analysis was to estimate the proportion and mortality of SARS-COV-2 in these patients.

METHODS

A comprehensive literature search was carried out in PubMed, Web of Sciences, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, CNKI, SciELO, and other databases to identify all relevant studies published up to 10 January, 2020. The proportion and mortality in the patients were assessed by odd ratio (OR) and the corresponding 95 % confidence interval (95 % CI).

RESULTS

A total of ten case-series including 11,755 cases with SARS-COV-2 infection and 942 deaths were selected. Among them, there were total of 791 DM patients with 186 deaths, 225 CKD patients with 45 deaths, 790 hypertension cases with 86 deaths, and 471 CVDs cases with 60 deaths. Pooled data revealed that the proportion of SARS-COV-2 infection in the patients with hypertension, DM, CVDs and CKD were 21.1 %, 16.3 %, 14.0 % and 5.0 %, respectively. Moreover, the SARS-COV-2 infection were associated with an increased risk of mortality in DM (OR = 0.549, CI 95 % 0.448-0.671, p ≤ 0.001) and CKD (OR = 0.552, 95 % CI 0.367-0.829, p = 0.004) patients, but not hypertension and CVDs. There was no publication bias.

CONCLUSIONS

Our pooled data showed that the proportion of SARS-COV-2 infection was the highest in the Iranian patients with hypertension (21.1 %) followed by DM (16.3 %), CVDs (14.0 %) and CKD (5.0 %). Moreover, DM and CKD in patients with SARS-COV-2 infection were associated with a 0.549 and 0.552-fold increase in mortality, respectively. Clinicians in Iran should be aware of these findings, to identifying patients at higher risk and inform interventions to reduce the risk of death. Moreover, well-designed, large-scale and multicenter studies are needed to improve and validate our findings.

Association of Neuregulin 1 rs7835688 G > C, rs16879552 T > C and rs2439302 G > C Polymorphisms with Susceptibility to Non-Syndromic Hirschsprung's Disease

Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) is a heterogeneous congenital malformation of the enteric nervous system with a complex genetic etiology. We investigated if there was an association between Neuregulin-1 (NRG1) rs7835688 G > C, rs16879552 T > C and rs2439302 G > C polymorphisms and the risk of HSCR. Methods: We determined and compared the frequency of NRG1 polymorphisms rs7835688 G > C, rs16879552 T > C and rs2439302 G > C in 70 children with HSCR and 90 controls by TaqMan SNPs genotyping assays. Results: No significant differences in allele or genotype frequencies of NRG1 rs7835688 G > C, rs16879552 T > C and rs2439302 G > C polymorphisms were observed between HSCR cases and controls. Analyses showed that the NRG1 rs7835688 G > C, rs16879552 T > C and rs2439302 G > C polymorphisms were not significantly associated with an increased risk of non-syndromic HSCR. Conclusions: Our findings suggested that NRG1 rs7835688 G > C, rs16879552 T > C and rs2439302 G > C polymorphisms are not a risk factor in development of HSCR.

Association of PAI-1 rs1799889 Polymorphism with Susceptibility to Ischemic Stroke: a Huge Meta-Analysis based on 44 Studies

BACKGROUND

the PAI-1 rs1799889 polymorphism has been reported to be associated with susceptibility to ischemic stroke. However, the results of previous studies have been inconsistent or controversial. Hence, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the association of PAI-1 rs1799889 polymorphism with ischemic stroke risk.

METHODS

A comprehensive literature search was performed on PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, SciELO, CNKI, and CBD databases up to November 05, 2019. Pooled odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to access the strength of this association in fixed- or random-effects model.

RESULTS

A total of 44 case-control studies with 8,620 cases and 10,260 controls were selected. Pooled data showed a significant association between PAI-1 rs1799889 polymorphism and ischemic stroke risk in the overall populations (GG vs. AA: OR = 0.791, 95% CI 0.633-0.988, p = 0.039; GA vs. AA: OR = 0.807, 95% CI 0.683-0.953, p = 0.012; and GG+GA vs. AA: OR = 0.795, 95% CI 0.637-0.993, p = 0.043). Subgroup analysis by ethnicity revealed a significant association in Asian and Mixed populations, but not in Caucasians. Moreover, stratified analysis by country of origin revealed an increased risk of ischemic stroke in Chinese populations, but not among Dutch (Netherlands) and Swedish.

CONCLUSIONS

This meta-analysis result suggested that PAI-1 rs1799889 polymorphism was associated with an increased risk of ischemic stroke, especially in Asian and Mixed populations.

Association of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 4G5G Polymorphism with risk of diabetic nephropathy and retinopathy: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Background

The 4G5G polymorphism of Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) gene is reported to be associated with diabetes nephropathy and retinopathy (DNR) risk. However, the findings are conflicting. Herein, we conducted a case-control and meta-analysis study to explore the association of PAI-1 4G5G polymorphism with risk of DNR.

Methods

We retrieved PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Knowledge, and CNKI databases and screened eligible studies up to August 15, 2020. The strength of associations was assessed by odd ratio (OR) and the corresponding 95% confidence interval (95% CI).

Results

A total of 27 case-control studies including 16 studies with 1,825 cases case and 1,731 controls on DN and eleven studies with 1,397 cases and 1,545 controls on DR were selected. Pooled data showed that the PAI-1 4G5G polymorphism was significantly associated with DN (allele model: OR = 0.674, 95% CI 0.524-0.865, p = 0.002; homozygote model: OR = 0.536, 95% CI 0.351-0.817, p = 0.004; heterozygote model: OR = 0.621, 95% CI 0.427-0.903, p = 0.013; dominant model: OR = 0.575, 95% CI 0.399-0.831, p = 0.003; and recessive model: OR = 0.711, 95% CI 0.515-0.981, p = 0.038) and DR (homozygote model: OR = 0.770, 95% CI 0.621-0.955, p = 0.0.017) risk. Stratified analyses by ethnicity indicated that PAI-1 4G5G polymorphism was associated with DN and DR risk in Asians and Caucasians, respectively.

Conclusions

The present meta-analysis revealed that the PAI-1 4G5G polymorphism was associated with increased risk of DN and DR risk. However, well-designed large-scale clinical studies are required to further validate our results.

Cumulative Evidence for Association Between IL-8 -251T>A and IL-18 -607C>A Polymorphisms and Colorectal Cancer Susceptibility: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

PURPOSE

The correlation of IL-8 and IL-18 gene polymorphisms with colorectal cancer (CRC) was investigated by previous studies, though the results remained conflicting. Thus, the meta-analysis was performed to investigate the association of IL-8 -251T>A and IL-18 -607C>A polymorphisms with CRC risk.

METHODS

A comprehensive search of the PubMed, Web of Science, CNKI, SciELO, and Wanfang databases was performed up to February 20, 2020. The strength of the associations was calculated with odds ratios (ORs) and their corresponding 95% of confidence intervals (CIs).

RESULTS

A total of 16 case-control studies including 13 studies with 3908 cases and 5005 controls on IL-8 -251T>A polymorphism and three studies with 396 cases and 560 controls on IL-18 -607C>A polymorphism were selected. Pooled data revealed that the IL-8 -251T>A and IL-18 -607C>A polymorphisms were not significantly associated with an increased risk of CRC in global population. When stratified by ethnicity, source of controls, sample size, and Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE), there were still no significant association between IL-8 -251T>A polymorphism and risk of CRC.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results revealed that the IL-8 -251T>A and IL-18 -607C>A polymorphisms were not associated with an increased susceptibility to CRC. We strongly call for further studies with larger sample sizes and different ethnicities to confirm our findings.

Association of IL-6 −174 G>C Polymorphism with Susceptibility to Colorectal Cancer and Gastric Cancer: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background: The −174G>C (rs1800795) polymorphism at interleukin 6 (IL-6) gene has been reported to be related with the occurrence of colorectal (CRC) and gastric (GC) cancers. However, the results had been conflicting and controversial. In order to give a comprehensive and precise result, we summarized available data to analyze the association of this polymorphism with CRC and GC risk. Methods: A comprehensive literature search on PubMed, Elsevier Science Direct, and CNKI database was performed to identify all eligible studies up to May 15, 2019. The strength of association was assessed by odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: A total of 29 case-control studies including 16 studies with 7,560 cases and 9,574 controls on CRC and 13 studies with 1,445 cases and 2,918 controls on GC were selected. Overall, pooled data showed that the IL-6 −174G>C polymorphism was not significantly associated with increased risk of CRC and GC in overall. When stratified by ethnicity, we found a statistically significant association between the IL-6 −174 G>C polymorphism and CRC risk in Asians (CC vs. GG: OR = 1.860, 95% CI 1.061–3.258, p = 0.030; and CC vs. CG+GG: OR = 1.941, 95% CI 1.131–3.331, p = 0.016). Conclusion: The meta-analysis suggests that IL-6 −174G>C polymorphism was not significantly associated with the increased risk of CRC and GC in overall population. However, the results showed that IL-6 −174G>C polymorphism may be associated with risk of GC in Asians. Further studies including a larger sample size will be necessary to clarify these results.

Association of catechol-O-methyltranferase 472G>A (Val158Met) polymorphism with susceptibility to fibromyalgia syndrome

Background

Several lines of research have suggested that the 472G > A (Val158Met) polymorphism at Catechol-O-methyltranferase (COMT) gene is implicated in the pathophysiology of FMS. Here, we have evaluated the association of COMT 472G > A polymorphism with risk of FMS.

Methods

In this study 250 patients with FMS and 250 healthy controls were evaluated for COMT 472G > A polymorphism by RFLP-PCR assay.

Results

There were no significant differences in the allele and genotype frequencies of COMT 472G > A polymorphism between FMS cases and healthy controls.

Conclusions

Our results suggested that the COMT 472G > A polymorphism may not be risk factor for development of FMS.

Association of XPC Polymorphisms with Cutaneous Malignant Melanoma Risk: Evidence from a Meta-Analysis

BACKGROUND

A number of studies have reported that the xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group C (XPC) polymorphisms are associated with cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) susceptibility. But the results of those studies were inconsistent. Here, we performed a study to obtain a more conclusive result on the association of XPC polymorphisms with risk of CMM.

METHODS

The XPC Lys939Gln and Ala499Val polymorphisms were genotyped in 150 CMM cases and 150 controls by PCR-RFLP assay. Subsequently, all published relevant studies were identified through a comprehensive literature search in PubMed, Web of Science, and CNKI databases. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to estimate the strength of correlation.

RESULTS

There was no significant association between XPC Lys939Gln and Ala499Val polymorphisms and CMM risk in our population. A total of 15 case-control studies including ten studies with 5,990 cases and 7,697 controls on XPC Lys939Gln and five studies with 3,139 cases and 3,721 controls on XPC Ala499Val polymorphism were selected. Pooled data revealed that XPC Lys939Gln (C vs. A: OR = 1.108, 95% CI 1.008- 1.217; P = 0.033) and Ala499Val (C vs. A: OR = 0.918, 95% CI 0.850-0.992; p = 0.031; CC+CA vs. AA: OR = 0.904, 95% CI 0.819-0.997; p = 0.043) polymorphisms were significantly associated with an increased risk of CMM. Moreover, stratified analyses by ethnicity revealed that the XPC Ala499Val and Lys939Gln polymorphisms were significantly associated with risk of CMM in Caucasians and mixed populations, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

This meta-analysis result suggested that XPC Lys939Gln and Ala499Val polymorphisms were significantly associated with risk of CMM.

Application of Edible and Biodegradable Starch-Based Films in Food Packaging: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

In recent years, natural polymers such as starch have been widely considered as alternatives to plastics derived from petroleum derivatives in the production of packaging films. Currently, modified starches with new functional features are available that can be used in the production of the above mentioned films. The aim at this study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of application of edible and biodegradable starch-based films in food packaging. At first all of the studies related to our title by using some keywords (edible and biodegradable starch-based films and food packaging) searched for English databases; Google, Google scholar, PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsycInfo, SCOPUS and ISI web of Science during the 2010 to 2018 was run consisting a predefined inclusion and exclusion factors. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were: papers related to edible and biodegradable starch-based films and food packaging, papers were English, types of papers were original and all the papers were free full text. As a result, related to inclusion and exclusion criteria papers were found and analyses. Data were collected based on study characteristics, edible and biodegradable starch-based films, food packaging. In the initial search, 589 articles were found that after reviewing the titles and abstract articles and removing repetitive and non-related, 33 possible related articles were examined. Of these, 24 articles were omitted from the abstract because of lack of access to the original article and lack of sufficient information. Finally, 13 papers were included in the study. Due to novel research on the application of bio-degradable biofilms in the packaging industry of food, starch is one of the most promising and promising sources. Different needs in the food packaging industry for bio-films have led to the diverse sources of starch being studied, because each source has its own specific characteristics. The properties of films obtained from starch indicated the rigidity and reduced flexibility of the films. To prevent this and the corresponding effects on the film, other polymers can be used as additive compounds. Extending the use of starch structure techniques and the use of this material in combination with other materials to reduce the inherent weaknesses of this natural polymer has led to its further development in various industries, especially packaged industries. Starch is a proper substitute for polymers extracted from oil derivatives. In order to improve the characteristics of the produced films, a high number of compounds can be added to the matrix, and various variations can be applied during the processing. Optimizing conditions will produce transparent, non-odorous, non-flavored, and color-free films with improved mechanical, optical and deterrent features.

The Effect of Modified Atmosphere Packaging on Physicochemical, Microbial, and Sensorial Properties of Iranian Mazafati Date

Background: Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) is one of the most convenient packaging methods that could be useful in reducing the wastes and extending the crops’ shelf-life. This research aimed to assess the impact of MAP containing high concentrations of carbon dioxide on physicochemical, microbial, and sensorial properties of Iranian Mazafati date. Methods: Date samples were packed separately in control and MAP treatment groups and stored at 5 and 25 °C. After 30, 60, and 90 storage days, acidity, Brix index, total count of bacteria, molds, and yeast, texture hardness, wettability, flavor, color changes of samples were evaluated. The data were analyzed by MSTAT-C software. Results: Acidity, Brix, and microbial loads in the MAP treatment groups were significantly (p<0.05) lower than control group. Hardness values of the date samples were significantly (p<0.05) decreased during 30, 60, and 90 days of storage time using MAP with low temperature. The MAP group at 5 °C and control group at 25 °C had the highest and lowest sensorial scores, respectively showing significant differences (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that application of the MAP method along with low temperature increases the shelf-life of Iranian Mazafati dates.

Association of TNF-α-308 G > A and -238G > A polymorphisms with knee osteoarthritis risk: A case-control study and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE

A comprehensive search on electronic databases was conducted to identify all eligible studies of TNF-α polymorphisms and knee osteoarthritis (OA).

METHODS

Eight studies on TNF-α -308 G > A and three on TNF-α -238G > A polymorphism were identified.

RESULTS

Overall, the pooled ORs indicated that neither TNF-α -238G > A nor -238G > A polymorphism was associated with knee OA risk. Similarly, in the stratified analysis by ethnicity, no significant association was found.

CONCLUSION

This meta-analysis results inconsistent with the previous meta-analyses showed that the TNF-α -308 G > A and -238G > A polymorphisms may not be associated with the susceptibility to knee OA.
