Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic role of lymphadenectomy in patients surgically treated for clinically early-stage epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). METHODS This retrospective, multicenter study included patients with clinically early-stage EOC based on preoperative abdominal-pelvic computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging findings between 2007 and 2021. Oncologic outcomes and perioperative complications were compared between the lymphadenectomy and non-lymphadenectomy groups. Independent prognostic factors were determined using Cox regression analysis. Disease-free survival (DFS) was the primary outcome. Overall survival (OS) and perioperative outcomes were the secondary outcomes. RESULTS In total, 586 patients (lymphadenectomy group, n=453 [77.3%]; non-lymphadenectomy groups, n=133 [22.7%]) were eligible. After surgical staging, upstaging was identified based on the presence of lymph node metastasis in 14 (3.1%) of 453 patients. No significant difference was found in the 5-year DFS (88.9% vs. 83.4%, p=0.203) and 5-year OS (97.2% vs. 97.7%, p=0.895) between the two groups. Using multivariable analysis, lymphadenectomy was not significantly associated with DFS or OS. However, using subgroup analysis, the lymphadenectomy group with serous histology had higher 5-year DFS rates than did the non-lymphadenectomy group (86.5% vs. 74.4%, p=0.048; adjusted hazard ratio=0.281; 95% confidence interval=0.107-0.735; p=0.010). The lymphadenectomy group had longer operating time (p<0.001), higher estimated blood loss (p<0.001), and higher perioperative complication rate (p=0.004) than did the non-lymphadenectomy group. CONCLUSION In patients with clinically early-stage EOC with serous histology, lymphadenectomy was associated with survival benefits. Considering its potential harm, lymphadenectomy should be performed according to histologic subtype and subsequent chemotherapy in patients with clinically early-stage EOC. Abstract
In the 2023 series, we summarized the major clinical research advances in gynecologic oncology based on communications at the conference of Asian Society of Gynecologic Oncology Review Course. The review consisted of 1) Endometrial cancer: immune checkpoint inhibitor, antibody drug conjugates (ADCs), selective inhibitor of nuclear export, CDK4/6 inhibitors WEE1 inhibitor, poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors. 2) Cervical cancer: surgery in low-risk early-stage cervical cancer, therapy for locally advanced stage and advanced, metastatic, or recurrent setting; and 3) Ovarian cancer: immunotherapy, triplet therapies using immune checkpoint inhibitors along with antiangiogenic agents and PARP inhibitors, and ADCs. In 2023, the field of endometrial cancer treatment witnessed a landmark year, marked by several practice-changing outcomes with immune checkpoint inhibitors and the reliable efficacy of PARP inhibitors and ADCs.

Abstract
Introduction We evaluated the effect of high-dose polymeric nanoparticle micellar paclitaxel (PM-Pac) on survival in patients with stage III-IV high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC) who underwent upfront surgery. Methods We prospectively recruited the patients who received PM-Pac (280 mg/m2) and carboplatin at an area under the curve (AUC) of 5 (cohort 1) in two tertiary centers between October 2015 and June 2019. As historical controls, we retrospectively collected data on those who received paclitaxel (175 mg/m2) and carboplatin (AUC 5; cohort 2) or paclitaxel (175 mg/m2), carboplatin (AUC 5) and bevacizumab (15 mg/kg; cohort 3). Results A total of 128 patients were divided into cohorts 1 (n=49, 38.3%), 2 (n=53, 41.4%), and 3 (n=26, 20.3%). Cohort 1 showed better progression-free survival (PFS) than cohort 2 in all patients and those treated with optimal debulking surgery (ODS; median, 35.5 vs. 28.1 and 35.5 vs. 28.9 months; p ≤ 0.01) despite no difference in PFS between cohorts 1 and 3 and between cohorts 2 and 3. In particular, stage III disease was a favorable factor for PFS, whereas cohort 2 was related to worse PFS (adjusted hazard ratios, 0.456 and 1.834; 95% confidence interval, 0.263 - 0.790 and 1.061 - 3.171), showing no difference in PFS between cohorts 1 and 3 in those treated with ODS. Conclusion High-dose PM-Pac improved PFS compared to conventional chemotherapy, and the change of paclitaxel to PM-Pac had as much effect on PFS as the addition of bevacizumab in patients with stage III-IV HGSC who underwent ODS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to identify high- and low-risk subgroups of patients with lymph node (LN) metastasis in presumed early-stage endometrioid endometrial cancer (EC) patients. METHODS Clinicopathologic data of presumed early-stage endometrioid EC patients (n=361) treated with lymphadenectomy between March 2000 and July 2022 were analyzed. None of the patient had definite evidence of LN metastasis in a preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A received operating characteristic curve analysis was conducted to define the sensitivity and specificity for the combined preoperative risk factors for LN metastasis, which was determined by multivariate analysis. RESULTS Nineteen patients (5.3%) had LN metastasis. Multivariate analysis identified cervical stromal invasion on MRI (odds ratio [OR]=4.386; 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.020-18.852; p=0.047), cornual location of tumor on MRI (OR=36.208; 95% CI=7.902-165.913; p<0.001), and lower uterine segment/isthmic location of tumor on MRI (OR=8.454; 95% CI=1.567-45.610; p=0.013) as independent prognostic factors associated with LN metastasis. Patients were categorized into low- and high-risk groups according to risk criteria. Significant differences in the rates of LN metastasis were observed between the two groups (0.4% vs. 22.2%, p<0.001). CONCLUSION Approximately 95% of presumed early-stage endometrioid EC patients did not have LN metastasis. A model using tumor location was significantly correlated with the risk of LN metastasis. Even in presumed early-stage endometrioid EC patients, therefore, tumor location should be investigated to determine whether to perform LN assessment.

Abstract
Since the latest practice guidelines for ovarian cancer were developed by the Korean Society of Gynecologic Oncology (KSGO) in 2021, many studies have examined the efficacy and safety of various treatments for epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Therefore, the need to develop recommendations for EOC treatments has been raised. This study searched the literature using 4 key items and the Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome: the efficacy and safety of poly-ADP ribose polymerase inhibitors in newly diagnosed advanced EOC; the efficacy and safety of intraperitoneal plus intravenous chemotherapy in optimally debulked advanced EOC; the efficacy and safety of secondary cytoreductive surgery in platinum-sensitive recurrent ovarian cancer; and the efficacy and safety of the addition of bevacizumab to platinum-based chemotherapy in first platinum-sensitive recurrent EOC patients who received prior bevacizumab. The evidence for these recommendations, according to each key question, was evaluated using a systematic review and meta-analysis. The committee of ovarian cancer of the KSGO developed updated guidelines for treatments of EOC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This meta-analysis was undertaken to systematically evaluate the effects of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitor (PARPi) maintenance therapy on the survival of newly diagnosed advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) patients. METHODS/MATERIALS A systematic literature search revealed 3,227 studies. A subsequent selection process identified seven suitable randomized studies that assessed the survival outcomes in newly diagnosed advanced EOC patients administered PARPi (n = 1921; the PARPi group) or placebo (n = 1150; the placebo group). The survival outcomes were compared with respect to the PARPi treatment regardless of bevacizumab maintenance therapy. All adverse events ≥ grade 3 were analyzed. Review Manager Version 5.4.1 software was used for the meta-analysis. RESULTS The two-year progression-free survival (PFS) was significantly better in the PARPi group than the placebo (Hazard ratio [HR], 0.53; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.41 to 0.68). Furthermore, patients in the PARPi group with the BRCA1/2 mutation (BRCAm), BRCA wild type, homologous-recombination deficiency (HRD), or HRD without BRCAm, but not with homologous-recombination proficiency had a significantly better two-year PFS than the patients in the placebo group. The five-year overall survival (OS) was comparable in the two groups, but patients in the PARPi group with BRCAm had a significantly better five-year OS than those in the placebo group (HR, 0.57; 95% CI, 0.44 to 0.74). In addition, the adverse event rate (≥ grade 3) was significantly higher in the PARPi group than in the placebo group (HR, 2.94; 95% CI, 1.13 to 7.63). CONCLUSIONS In patients with newly diagnosed advanced EOC, PARPi maintenance therapy was significantly more effective in terms of survival than no PARPi treatment. However, the risk of serious adverse events was higher for patients who received PARPi maintenance therapy.

Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy After Interval Cytoreductive Surgery for Patients With Advanced-Stage Ovarian Cancer Who Had Received Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy. Abstract
Importance Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) followed by interval cytoreductive surgery (ICS) has shown survival benefits for patients with advanced-stage ovarian cancer. However, there is still a lack of consensus regarding the integration of HIPEC into clinical practice. Objective To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of ICS with HIPEC compared with ICS alone in clinical practice for patients with advanced-stage ovarian cancer. Design, Setting, and Participants This prospective, multicenter, comparative effectiveness cohort study enrolled 205 patients with stage III or IV ovarian cancer who had received at least 3 cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by ICS with HIPEC or ICS without HIPEC at 7 Korean Gynecologic Oncology Group institutions between September 1, 2017, and April 22, 2022. Nine patients were excluded because they did not meet the inclusion criteria. Exposures Neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by ICS with HIPEC or ICS without HIPEC. Main Outcomes and Measures The primary end point was progression-free survival (PFS). Overall survival (OS) and the safety profile were the key secondary end points. Results This study included 196 patients (median age, 58.0 years [range, 38-82 years]), of whom 109 underwent ICS with HIPEC and 87 underwent ICS without HIPEC. The median duration of follow-up was 28.2 months (range, 3.5-58.6 months). Disease recurrence occurred in 128 patients (65.3%), and 30 patients (15.3%) died. Interval cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC was associated with a significant improvement in median PFS compared with ICS without HIPEC (22.9 months [95% CI, 3.5-58.6 months] vs 14.2 months [95% CI, 4.0-56.2 months]; P = .005) and median OS (not reached [95% CI, 3.5 months to not reached] vs 53.0 [95% CI, 4.6-56.2 months]; P = .002). The frequency of grade 3 or 4 postoperative complications was similar in both groups (ICS with HIPEC, 3 of 109 [2.8%] vs ICS without HIPEC, 3 of 87 [3.4%]; P > .99). Among patients with recurrence, the frequency of peritoneal recurrence was lower in the ICS with HIPEC group than in the ICS without HIPEC group (21 of 64 [32.8%] vs 41 of 64 [64.1%]; P = .001). Conclusions and Relevance This study suggests that ICS in conjunction with HIPEC was associated with longer PFS and OS than ICS without HIPEC for patients with advanced-stage ovarian cancer and was not associated with higher rates of postoperative complications. The lower rate of peritoneal recurrence after HIPEC may be associated with improved OS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify clinicopathological factors associated with disease recurrence for patients with 2018 FIGO stage IA with lymphovascular invasion to IB1 cervical cancer treated with minimally invasive surgery (MIS). METHODS A total of 722 patients with cervical cancer between January 2010 and February 2021 were identified. Clinicopathological factors related to disease recurrence were analyzed. Disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) rates were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. To determine prognostic factors for DFS, a Cox proportional hazard regression model was used. RESULTS Of 722 patients, 49 (6.8%) experienced disease recurrence (37 pelvis, 1 para-aortic lymph node, and 11 peritoneum). Five-year DFS and OS rates were 90.7% and 98.1%, respectively. In multivariate analysis, risk factors associated with disease recurrence were residual disease in the remaining cervix (OR, 3.122; 95% CI, 1.152-8.461; p = 0.025), intracorporeal colpotomy (OR, 3.252; 95% CI, 1.507-7.017; p = 0.003), and positive resection margin (OR, 3.078; 95% CI, 1.031-9.193; p = 0.044). The non-conization group had a higher percentage of stage IB1 (77.4% vs. 64.6%; p = 0.004) and larger tumor (10 mm vs. 7 mm; p < 0.001) than the conization group. Intracorporeal colpotomy and residual disease in the remaining cervix were independent variables associated with disease recurrence in patients undergoing MIS following conization. CONCLUSION During MIS, patients with cervical cancer ≤2 cm in size can be vulnerable to peritoneal recurrences. Patients diagnosed with invasive cancer through conization often have low-risk pathological features, which may affect their survival outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To identify those most likely to benefit from secondary cytoreductive surgery (SCS), we evaluated the survival outcomes and factors predictive of prognosis in patients with recurrent ovarian cancer. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with recurrent ovarian cancer treated at five high-volume Korean hospitals between 2010 and 2021. Recurrence characteristics, treatment methods, and potential predictors of survival were compared between the chemotherapy and surgery groups. RESULTS Among all 670 patients, 88.1% had initial stage III/IV disease, and 215 (32.1%) underwent SCS. Among patients who underwent SCS, only those who achieved complete resection exhibited improved survival. Even in patients with residual disease < 1 cm after SCS, we observed no significant survival benefit (p = 0.942). In the multivariate Cox analysis, residual disease at primary surgery, progression-free interval, recurrence sites (≤3 regions or limited carcinomatosis), ascites, and SCS were significant predictors of survival. Meanwhile, the only factor predictive of complete resection after SCS was recurrence sites (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The benefits of SCS appear to be exclusive to cases of complete resection. We propose limited regional platinum-sensitive recurrence (≤3 regions or limited carcinomatosis) without ascites as the optimum selection criteria for SCS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate oncologic and pregnancy outcomes of fertility-sparing treatment (FST) using progestin in patients with stage I grade 2 endometrioid endometrial cancer (EC) without myometrial invasion (MI) or grade 1-2 with superficial MI. METHODS Multicenter data of patients with stage I grade 2 EC without MI or grade 1-2 EC with superficial MI, who received FST between 2005 and 2021, were analyzed. Cox regression analysis identified independent factors for progressive disease (PD) during the FST. RESULTS Altogether, 54 patients received FST [medroxyprogesterone acetate (500-1000 mg) in 44, megestrol acetate (40-800 mg) in 10] with concurrent levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine devices use in 31. With median time to achieve a complete response (CR) of 10 (3-24) months, 39 patients (72.2%) achieved CR. Of the 15 patients who attempted to conceive after achieving CR, 7 (46.7%) became pregnant (2 abortions, 5 live births). During a median FST duration of 6 (3-12) months, nine patients (16.6%) were diagnosed with PD. Fifteen (38.5%) experienced recurrence with a median recurrence-free survival of 23 (3-101) months. In the multivariable analysis, tumor size before FST ≥2 cm (HR 5.456, 95% CI 1.34 to 22.14; p = 0.018) was significantly associated with a high PD rate during FST. CONCLUSION The overall response rate to FST was promising, however, the PD rate was significant during the first 12 months of FST. Therefore, performing thorough endometrial biopsy and imaging studies is essential to strictly evaluate the extent of the disease every 3 months from FST initiation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There have been no studies concerning the complications or benefits of cholecystectomy in ovarian cancer. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the outcomes of cholecystectomy performed during various time periods of the disease course and suggest a management strategy for cholecystectomy in ovarian cancer. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with advanced ovarian cancer who underwent cholecystectomy during the cytoreductive surgery from 2009 to 2020. Cholecystectomy was primarily indicated when the gallbladder and surrounding structures were considered to have metastatic tumor invasion. If the final pathologic results showed free of malignant tumor, patients were placed into the no-infiltration group. Clinical outcomes including the recurrence rate and complications were analyzed. RESULTS A total of 62 patients underwent cholecystectomy, 48 of whom (77.4%) underwent cholecystectomy during primary or interval debulking surgery, whereas 14 (22.6%) underwent cholecystectomy during the follow-up period (five with benign disease and 9 with disease recurrence). Among the patients, 32 (51.6%) patients were included in the no-infiltration group in the final pathology. There were no complications observed in the no-infiltration group (n = 32). Seven (78%) of the nine patients who received cholecystectomy for disease recurrence had metastatic disease in the porta-hepatis or lesser sac at the time of primary surgery. However, no recurrent lesions were observed around the porta-hepatis in patients who received cholecystectomy during primary treatment. CONCLUSION Considering the safety of the procedure, as well as the risk of disease recurrence or cholecystitis, a cholecystectomy can be offered to patients with ovarian cancer who have metastatic lesions around the gallbladder and porta-hepatis at the time of primary surgery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze peritoneal spillage and displacement of indocyanine green (ICG)-stained tissues from uterine cervix to pelvis during intracorporeal/vaginal colpotomy in laparoscopic-assisted hysterectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eleven patients undergoing laparoscopic-assisted hysterectomy were included. One patient with an incidental diagnosis of endometrial cancer was excluded. Of the 10 patients, five underwent intracorporeal colpotomy (IC) and five received vaginal colpotomy (VC) during laparoscopic-assisted hysterectomy. Approximately 5 cm of resected round ligament from each patient was stained with ICG and cut to 1.0 × 1.0 cm in size. Four to five fragments of ICG-stained tissues were placed and sutured on the uterine cervix before colpotomy. During and after colpotomy, serial pictures under white and fluorescence light were taken to document peritoneal spillage and displacement of ICG-stained tissues to the pelvic peritoneum. RESULTS Peritoneal spillage of ICG occurred in the entire IC group. Displacement of ICG-stained tissues from uterine cervix to pelvic peritoneum were visualized in three (60%) patients undergoing IC. In the five patients who received VC, peritoneal spillage of ICG and displacement of ICG-stained tissue to pelvic peritoneum did not occur. There were no perioperative complications. CONCLUSIONS IC in minimally invasive radical hysterectomy should not be performed because peritoneal spillage of ICG and displacement of ICG-stained tissues from uterine cervix to pelvis frequently occurs during IC. Therefore, specific measures to prevent tumor exposure during colpotomy should be implemented in cervical cancer patients.

Abstract
Simple Summary Eligibility for secondary cytoreductive surgery (SCS) in ovarian cancer is dependent on multiple confounding factors. In this study, we evaluated the clinical characteristics of 262 patients with recurrent ovarian cancer to assess the impact of SCS on patient survival and establish simplified criteria for the selection of patients who would most likely be benefitted from SCS. We observed that the median survival was significantly longer in the patients who received SCS compared with those who received chemotherapy alone. As for the indication of the surgery, limited regional recurrence (single region or up to three regions with limited carcinomatosis) emerged as the simplified factor that could predict no residual disease after SCS. Abstract (1) Background: Multiple confounding factors influence the indications for secondary cytoreductive surgery (SCS) in patients with ovarian cancer (OC). We aimed to identify the factors associated with patients most likely to benefit from SCS. (2) Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with recurrent ovarian cancer from 2003 to 2021. The potential factors influencing treatment outcomes and survival between patients who received chemotherapy alone and those who received SCS after recurrence were evaluated. (3) Results: Recurrent OC was identified in 262 patients, with a median age of 53 (20–80) years. Of these patients, 87.4% had an initial stage III/IV disease. Eighty-nine (34%) patients received SCS. The median survival was 41.0 (95% confidence interval [CI], 37.4–44.5) months and 88.0 (95% CI, 64.2–111.7) months in the chemotherapy and surgery groups, respectively. A multivariate analysis showed limited regional carcinomatosis (single region or up to three regions with limited carcinomatosis) (p = 0.045) as the only significant factor for predicting no residual disease after SCS. In platinum-sensitive recurrent patients with limited regional recurrence, the complete resection rate was 87.6%. (4) Conclusions: SCS had a significant impact on survival in the selected patient population. Limited regional recurrence (single region or up to three regions with limited carcinomatosis) may be a simple criterion for SCS in platinum-sensitive recurrent OC patients.

Abstract
Background This study aims to evaluate the incidence of and identify risk factors for gastrointestinal (GI) and genitourinary (GU) fistula or perforation formation with or without bevacizumab in patients with recurrent cervical cancer who underwent pelvic radiation therapy (RT). Methods Medical records of patients with recurrent cervical cancer who previously underwent pelvic RT between 2007 and 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Clinicopathological factors were compared between groups that are stratified according to: 1) fistula/perforation (+) versus (-); and 2) bevacizumab plus conventional chemotherapy (BC) versus chemotherapy alone (C). Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed to identify risk factors for fistula/perforation. Overall survival (OS) was compared between the different groups. Results Of 219 participants, fistula/perforation of any grade occurred in 36 patients (16.4%); 27 fistulas and 9 perforations. Bevacizumab was more frequently used in Bevacizumab was more frequently used ( +) group than fistula/perforation (-) group (p = 0.015). Multivariate analysis showed that bevacizumab administration was the only independent risk factor for fistula or perforation (HR, 3.27; 95% CI, 1.18–9.10; P = 0.023). F/P was observed more frequently in women receiving BC (n = 144) than those receiving C (n = 75) (20.8% vs. 8.0%; P = 0.019). During median follow-up of 33.7 months (1.2–185.6 months), no significant OS difference was observed between fistula/perforation ( +) vs. (-) (hazards ratio [HR], 1.78; median 84.2 months [95% CI, 59.3–109.0] vs. 129.5 months [95% CI, 114.1–144.9]; P = 0.065) or BC vs. C (HR, 1.03; median 119.8 months [95% CI, 97.3–142.3] vs. 115.7 months [95% CI, 96.0–135.4]; P = 0.928). Conclusions This study suggests that incorporation of bevacizumab in chemotherapy regimens for treating recurrent cervical cancer in patients who underwent pelvic RT incurs considerable risk for GI/GU fistula or perforation. There were no other independent risk factors for developing GI/GU fistula or perforation in this study population. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the treatment outcomes and complications of patients with FIGO stage IIIC and IVB endometrioid endometrial cancer (EC) presenting primarily as nodal spreads following systematic lymphadenectomy and adjuvant therapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty-four FIGO stage IIIC and IVB endometrioid EC patients between July 2003 and March 2020 received staging procedures including systematic lymphadenectomy. The survival outcomes and late treatment-related complications were compared between adjuvant chemoradiation-based group and chemotherapy-based group. RESULTS Of the 44 patients, 16 (36.4%) had stage IIIC1, 26 (59.1%) had stage IIIC2, and 2 (4.5%) had stage IVB disease. The median follow-up time was 54 months (range, 10-185 months). There was no statistical difference in mortality between the microscopic and macroscopic nodal groups (6.2% vs 4.3%, p > 0.999). Eleven patients (25.0%) and 33 patients (75.0%) received adjuvant chemoradiation and chemotherapy, respectively. The 5-year disease-free and overall survival rates were not different between the two groups (disease-free survival, 81.8% vs 82.1%, p = 0.743; overall survival, 90.9% vs 95.8%, p = 0.537). The incidence rates of grade 2 lymphedema (36.4% vs 9.1%, p = 0.032) and grade 2/3 gastrointestinal complications (36.4% vs 0.0%, p < 0.001) were higher in the chemoradiation-based group than those in the chemotherapy-based group. CONCLUSIONS Systematic lymphadenectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy might be the preferred treatment for FIGO stage IIIC and IVB endometrioid EC patients presenting as nodal spreads given that no difference in patient survival was found, but a higher incidence of treatment-related complications was observed in the chemoradiation-based group.

Abstract
Ovarian cancer is known as the second most common cause of death among gynecologic cancers. Survival outcome has been reported to be significantly associated with the efforts to minimize residual disease after cytoreductive surgery. As ovarian cancer often invades the small and large bowel without boundary, bowel surgery has been a crucial part of the cytoreductive surgery to achieve complete tumor removal. The scope of surgical resections has progressively expanded to include small and large bowel resections, making advanced surgical skills essential for gynecologic oncologists. In this review, we discuss the extra-pelvic bowel resection in cytoreductive surgery, with a focus on the regional anatomy and surgical techniques.

Abstract
As ovarian cancer commonly involves the visceral organs without boundary, more aggressive procedures are adopted during cytoreductive surgery. One of the most difficult aspect of the operation involves the procedure for the gall bladder, porta hepatis, and omental bursa. As the upper abdominal surgical field is not familiar to the gynecologic surgeon, and the vital organs or vessels are densely positioned, these procedures can be challenging for achieving the optimal cytoreductive surgery. The surgical approaches for advanced ovarian cancer that are required in the upper abdomen have evolved with the progress in surgical techniques. This article will discuss the surgical approach by focusing on cholecystectomy, porta hepatis debulking, and omental bursectomy, as well as the regional anatomy in patients with advanced ovarian cancer.

Abstract
Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis is a severe autoimmune paraneoplastic syndrome associated with ovarian teratomas. Most patients develop neurologic symptoms, including psychosis, memory deficits, seizures, or abnormal movements, and experience abdominal pain related to ovarian neoplasm. We present a case report of three patients diagnosed with anti-NMDAR encephalitis accompanied by ovarian teratomas at Ajou University Hospital in Korea. The patients demonstrated a different clinical course of the disease. However, upon diagnosis, all patients underwent surgical removal of the ovarian teratoma followed by intensive immunotherapy. The symptoms progressively improved following treatment. This is a case report of a rare autoimmune anti-NMDAR encephalitis associated with ovarian neoplasms, including immature teratoma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinicopathologic factors influencing pelvic, extra-pelvic, and intraperitonal recurrences and survival in patients with lymph node-negative early-stage cervical cancer treated with abdominal/laparoscopic/robotic radical hysterectomy (ARH/LRH/RRH). STUDY DESIGN We retrospectively reviewed clinicopathologic data of 342 patients with FIGO stage IB-IIA cervical cancer (2018 FIGO staging) treated with RH and retroperitonal lymphadenectomy between February 2000 and November 2018. Several clinicopathologic factors such as surgical methods including LRH/RRH-vaginal colpotomy (VC) and LRH/RRH-intracorporeal colpotomy (IC), surgical resection margin, and parametrial/endomyometrial infiltration were selected. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression and logistic regression models were used to determine prognostic factors. RESULTS The median follow-up time was 54 months (range, 6-202 months). In multivariate analysis, positive endomyometrial infiltration (HR, 13.576; 95 % CI, 2.917-63.179; P = 0.001), positive parametrial resection margin (HR, 32.648; 95 % CI, 2.774-384.181; P = 0.006), and LRH/RRH-IC (HR, 4.752; 95 % CI, 1.154-19.578; P = 0.031) were significantly related to overall survival. Six (26.3 %) out of 21 patients with endomyometrial infiltration showed extra-pelvic recurrences associated with lung, liver, and brain. Three (50.0 %) out of 6 patients with positive parametrial margin showed both pelvic and extra-pelvic metastases, such as pelvis and supraclavicular/paratracheal lymph nodes. Five (62.5 %) out of the eight relapsed patients who received LRH/RRH-IC showed intraperitoneal recurrences including omentum, liver surface, colon serosa, and splenic hilum. CONCLUSIONS Three risk factors including parametrial margin, endomyometrial infiltration, and laparoscopic IC appear to be involved in pelvic, extra-pelvic, and intraperitoneal recurrences in node-negative early-stage cervical cancer patients following RH. In particular, endomyometrial infiltration may be one of the strongest independent prognostic factors for extra-pelvic recurrence. Adjuvant systemic therapy may be indicated for lymph node-negative early-stage cervical cancer patients with endomyometrial infiltration.

OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of close rectal dissection (CRD) compared with those of total mesorectal excision (TME) as the posterior rectal dissection procedure during rectosigmoid colectomy performed as part of cytoreductive surgery in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 163 patients who underwent posterior rectal dissection for rectosigmoid resection, including low anterior resection or subtotal colectomy, as part of ovarian cancer surgery from 2006 to 2018. The TME technique was mainly performed by colorectal surgeons, and the CRD technique preserving the mesorectal tissue was performed by an experienced gynecologic oncology surgeon. The patients were divided into the TME group and the CRD group, and their clinical outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS A total of 163 patients with ovarian cancer underwent rectosigmoid colon resection. Among the patients, 87 (53.4%) underwent CRD and 76 (46.6%) underwent TME as the posterior rectal dissection technique. The disease severity according to FIGO stage (p = .390) and the residual disease status (p = .412) were not statistically different between the 2 groups. However, the postoperative incidences of anastomotic leakage (p = .045) and prolonged ileus (>7 days, p = .055) were higher in the TME group. The pelvic recurrence rate and progression-free survival did not differ between the 2 groups (p = .663 and .790, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Considering the perioperative outcomes, CRD may be an alternative technique for rectal dissection in ovarian cancer with less perioperative morbidity and equivalent oncologic outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES To achieve optimal cytoreduction, extensive bowel resections are sometimes required in patients with advanced ovarian cancer. Few studies have focused on the extent or number of resections of bowel surgeries and their feasibility. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with advanced ovarian cancer who underwent bowel surgery as part of debulking procedures at Ajou University Hospital from 2006 to 2018. Patients who received extensive bowel resections (two-segment resections or subtotal colectomy) were identified, and their perioperative outcomes were evaluated. RESULTS A total of 172 patients underwent bowel surgery. Of them, 128 (74.4%) underwent one-segment bowel resection, 25 (14.5%) underwent two-segment bowel resections, and 19 (11.1%) underwent subtotal colectomy. Although the operative time, transfusion rate, and postoperative bleeding events were higher in patients who underwent extensive bowel resection, the rates of perioperative complications were not significantly higher in this group. Anastomotic leakage occurred in two (1.5%) patients in the one-segment resection group, one (4.2%) patient in the multiple resection group, and two (10.5%) patients in the subtotal colectomy group. CONCLUSIONS Multiple bowel resections (up to two segments) are feasible and can be safely performed with an acceptable complication rate in patients with advanced ovarian cancer.

Abstract
Loss of light perception (LP) after open globe injury (OGI) does not necessarily mean the patient will have permanent complete visual loss. Findings that seem to be associated reliably with permanent profound vision loss after OGI include optic nerve avulsion, optic nerve transection, and profound loss of intraocular contents, which can be identified with CT/MRI imaging albeit with varying degrees of confidence. Eyes with NLP after OGI that undergo successful primary repair with intact optic nerves may be considered for additional surgery, particularly if there is: (1) recovery of LP on the first day after primary repair; (2) treatable pathology underlying NLP status (e.g., extensive choroidal hemorrhage, dense vitreous and subretinal hemorrhage); (3) NLP in the fellow eye. We counsel patients that the chance of recovering ambulatory vision under these circumstances is very low (~5%).

Abstract
Smart city and innovative building strategies are becoming increasingly more necessary because advancing a sustainable building system is regarded as a promising solution to overcome the depleting water and energy. However, current sustainable building systems mainly focus on energy saving and miss a holistic integration of water regeneration and energy generation. Here, we present a theoretical study of a solar optics-based active panel (SOAP) that enables both solar energy storage and photothermal disinfection of greywater simultaneously. Solar collector efficiency of energy storage and disinfection rate of greywater have been investigated. Due to the light focusing by microlens, the solar collector efficiency is enhanced from 25% to 65%, compared to that without the microlens. The simulation of greywater sterilization shows that 100% disinfection can be accomplished by our SOAP for different types of bacteria including Escherichia coli. Numerical simulation reveals that our SOAP as a lab-on-a-wall system can resolve the water and energy problem in future sustainable building systems.

Abstract
PURPOSE Many studies have reported associations between elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) and systemic health parameters, which suggest a common mechanism links IOP elevation and various related cardiometabolic risk factors. Furthermore, according to a recent study, serum apolipoprotein B (APO B) level is a predictor of coronary artery disease. This study was undertaken to analyse the relationship between serum apolipoprotein levels and IOP. METHODS Healthy people (28,852) who attended a community hospital for a health checkup between January 2011 and December 2013 were enroled in the study. We measured age, body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and apolipoprotein A1 (APO A1) and APO B, APO B/APO A1 ratios, and IOP. RESULTS Univariate regression analysis showed IOP was positively correlated with BMI, SBP, DBP, TC, LDL-C, TG, APO B, and APO B/APO A1 (P<0.001), and negatively correlated with HDL-C (P<0.001). On the other hand, multivariate regression analysis adjusted for age, BMI, SBP, and DBP, revealed IOP was positive correlated with TC, TG, LDL-C, APO B, and APO B/APO A1, and negatively correlated with HDL-C (all <0.05). CONCLUSIONS Among the various lipid profiles investigated, APO B was found to be most strongly correlated with IOP, regardless of sex. Additional studies are required to confirm the validity of apolipoprotein level as an index for predicting IOP.

Abstract
1. A caecal intubation technique was developed to determine the amount of digesta that enters the caeca of fed and feed-deprived chickens. 2. Dry matter intakes per day for control and caecostomised chickens were not significantly different. 3. For fed and feed-deprived roosters, water intake was significantly increased by caecostomy in control birds and was significantly increased by feeding. 4. Amount of caecal dry matter excretion was significantly increased by feeding, but no difference in caecal water excretion was observed. 5. The ratio of caecal excretion (caecal/total excretion) of dry matter and water tended to decrease in response to feeding. 6. It is concluded that dry matter entry into the caeca represents 18% or 25% of the total dry matter excretion in fed or feed-deprived birds, respectively. Corresponding values for water entry are 17 and 26%. Therefore, the caeca play an important role in water balance.

Abstract
Chronic exposure to manganese causes Parkinson's disease (PD)-like clinical symptoms (Neurotoxicology 5 (1984) 13; Arch. Neurol. 46 (1989) 1104; Neurology 56 (2001) 4). Occupational exposure to manganese is proposed as a risk factor in specific cases of idiopathic PD (Neurology 56 (2001) 8). We have investigated the mechanism of manganese neurotoxicity in nigral dopaminergic (DA) neurons using the DA cell line, SN4741 (J. Neurosci. 19 (1999) 10). Manganese treatment elicited endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress responses, such as an increased level of the ER chaperone BiP, and simultaneously activated the ER resident caspase-12. Peak activation of other major initiator caspases-like activities, such as caspase-1, -8 and -9, ensued, resulting in activation of caspase-3-like activity during manganese-induced DA cell death. The neurotoxic cell death induced by manganese was significantly reduced in the Bcl-2-overexpressing DA cell lines. Our findings suggest that manganese-induced neurotoxicity is mediated in part by ER stress and considerably ameliorated by Bcl-2 overexpression in DA cells.

Abstract
A possible source for transplantable neurons in Parkinson's disease are adult olfactory bulb (OB) dopamine (DA) progenitors that originate in the anterior subventricular zone and reach the OB through the rostral migratory stream. We used adult transgenic mice expressing a lacZ reporter directed by an 8.9 kb tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) promoter to investigate the course of DAergic differentiation. Parallel transgene and intrinsic TH mRNA expression occurred during migration of DA interneurons through the mitral and superficial granule cell layers before these cells reached their final periglomerular position. Differential transgene and calcium-calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IV expression distinguished two nonoverlapping populations of interneurons. Transgenic mice carrying a TH8.9kb/lacZ construct with a mutant AP-1 site demonstrated that this element confers OB DA-specific TH gene regulation. These results indicate that DA phenotypic determination is specific to a subset of mobile OB progenitors.

Abstract
1. The effect of caecal ligation and colostomy on water intake and excretion were examined in chickens fed a low-protein diet or a low-protein diet supplemented with urea. 2. When fed a low-protein diet, the water intake and the ratio of water intake to food intake were increased by colostomy (P < 0.05) but not changed further by caecal ligation of colostomised chickens. 3. When fed a low-protein diet supplemented with urea, the amount of water intake and the ratio of water intake to food intake were not changed by either treatment. 4. Total water excretion was much higher in the colostomised plus caeca-ligated chickens than in other 3 groups fed both types of diet (P < 0.05). 5. The amount of faecal water excretion was increased by cecal ligation in colostomised chickens fed either diet (P < 0.01). 6. No effect of any treatment on water balance was observed in chickens fed either diet. 7. It is concluded that the lower intestine plays a useful role in the water economy of chickens fed a low-protein diet or a low-protein diet supplemented with urea.

Abstract
Recent etiological study in twins (Tanner et al. 1999) strongly suggests that environmental factors play an important role in typical, non-familial Parkinson's disease (PD), beginning after age 50. Epidemiological risk factor analyses of typical PD cases have identified several neurotoxicants, including MPP(+) (the active metabolite of MPTP), paraquat, dieldrin, manganese and salsolinol. Here, we tested the hypothesis that these neurotoxic agents might induce cell death in our nigral dopaminergic cell line, SN4741 (Son et al. 1999) through a common molecular mechanism. Our initial experiments revealed that treatment with both MPP(+) and the other PD-related neurotoxicants induced apoptotic cell death in SN4741 cells, following initial increases of H(2)O(2)-related ROS activity and subsequent activation of JNK1/2 MAP kinases. Moreover, we have demonstrated that during dopaminergic cell death cascades, MPP(+), the neurotoxicants and an oxidant, H(2)O(2) equally induce the ROS-dependent events. Remarkably, the oxidant treatment alone induced similar sequential molecular events: ROS increase, activation of JNK MAP kinases, activation of the PITSLRE kinase, p110, by both Caspase-1 and Caspase-3-like activities and apoptotic cell death. Pharmacological intervention using the combination of the antioxidant Trolox and a pan-caspase inhibitor Boc-(Asp)-fmk (BAF) exerted significant neuroprotection against ROS-induced dopaminergic cell death. Finally, the high throughput cDNA microarray screening using the current model identified downstream response genes, such as heme oxygenase-1, a constituent of Lewy bodies, that can be the useful biomarkers to monitor the pathological conditions of dopaminergic neurons under neurotoxic insult.

Abstract
The mammalian sperm acrosome reaction (AR) is essential to fertilization, and the egg zona pellucida (ZP) is generally believed to be an in vivo initiator of the fertilizing sperm AR. Previously a neuronal glycine receptor/Cl(-) channel (GlyR) was detected on the plasma membrane of mammalian sperm and earlier pharmacological studies suggested that this receptor/channel is important to the ZP-initiated AR. Here, sperm from mice with mutations in the neuronal GlyR alpha or beta subunits (spasmodic and spastic) were shown to be deficient in their ability to undergo the AR initiated in vitro by glycine or by solubilized ZP from mouse eggs. However, both spontaneous and calcium ionophore (A23187)-initiated AR were unaffected. The ZP-initiated AR in wild-type sperm was maximal after 2 h of capacitation, but capacitation of sperm from spasmodic mice for up to 3 h did not result in significant ZP-initiated AR. Similar results were observed when sperm from wild-type and spastic mice were compared. Testis from mice with the beta subunit mutation contained truncated beta subunit mRNAs. Moreover, a monoclonal antibody against GlyR completely blocked ZP initiation of AR in normal mouse sperm. Our results are consistent with an essential role for the sperm GlyR in the ZP-initiated AR.

Abstract
1. The effect of caecectomy on nitrogen utilisation and excretion was examined in growing chicks fed on a commercial diet. 2. Caecectomy had no significant effect on food intake or body weight gain. 3. Caecectomy caused significantly higher moisture content in excreta (P<0.01). 4. Gastrointestinal passage time of digesta was significantly shorter in caecectomised chicks than in control chicks (P<0.05). 5. Caecectomy tended to improve nitrogen utilisation rate in growing chicks. 6. The treatment significantly decreased uric acid excretion (P<0.01) and excretory uric acid-N/total nitrogen excretion (P<0.01). 7. It is concluded that the effects of caecectomy on nitrogen metabolism in growing chicks are similar to those in adult chickens.

Abstract
1. The effect of washing out the caecal contents on nitrogen utilisation and nitrogen excretion were examined in Single Comb White Leghorn cockerels fed on a 50 g/kg protein diet supplemented with urea. 2. Flushing out the caecal contents with saline in caecally ligated chickens produced a significantly increased nitrogen balance and increased nitrogen utilisation (P<0.05). 3. Washing out the caecal contents significantly decreased uric acid excretion but the treatment had no effect on urea and ammonia excretion. 4. Caecal bacterial contents were significantly decreased by caecal ligation and decreased further by washing out the caecal contents. 5. It is concluded that nitrogen metabolism in chickens is affected by possible changes in caecal fermentation produced by preventing substances from urine and digesta from entering the caeca.

Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by the selective loss of dopamine (DA) neurons in the substantia nigral brain region. Currently, there is no cure or treatment that prevents such neuronal loss. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been found to support the survival of DA neurons in animal models and in primary cell cultures. However, the large molecular size of BDNF, coupled with the blood brain barrier, prevents its delivery to DA neurons to promote cell survival in the PD brain. The nigral DA neurons have the ability to produce BDNF for neuroprotection via either autocrine or paracrine mechanisms. Low mol. wt compounds were tested to see whether they could increase the production of BDNF in the DA neurons. The compounds tested include neurotransmitters, neuropeptides, intracellular signaling agents, known neuroprotective agents and growth factors. Our results demonstrate that salicyclic acid, cGMP analog, okadaic acid, IBMX, dipyridamole and glutamate significantly enhance BDNF production in DA neuronal cells.

Abstract
Previously, we reported that glycine initiates the in vitro acrosome reaction (AR) of porcine and human sperm by a mechanism that includes the glycine receptor/Cl- channel (GlyR) and that this receptor/channel is required for the zona-pellucida-initiated AR. Because mouse sperm are important tools in the study of fertilization, we investigated whether glycine initiated the mouse sperm AR and whether the sperm GlyR was involved in that initiation. Glycine (250 microM to 1 mM) initiated the AR of capacitated but not noncapacitated mouse sperm. The glycine-initiated AR was significantly inhibited by 50 nM strychnine, a neuronal GlyR antagonist. The neuronal GlyR agonists taurine and beta-alanine did not initiate the AR at 1 mM or 5 mM. A monoclonal antibody against the rat spinal cord GlyR significantly inhibited the glycine-initiated AR but not the spontaneous AR. Indirect immunofluorescence localization studies with that monoclonal antibody and postfixed live sperm detected 3 patterns of immunoreactivity involving 2 sites in the periacrosomal plasma membrane. These patterns were as follows: type A localization on the plasma membrane overlying the tip of the anterior acrosomal region; type B localization on the plasma membrane overlying the posterior part of the acrosomal equatorial segment and/or, in acrosome-reacted sperm, the posterior part of the modified equatorial segment; and type C localization that included both type A and type B. Type A and type C localization were only observed on the acrosome-intact sperm. During capacitation, the number of the sperm showing type A localization increased. Our results demonstrate that mouse sperm provide an excellent model for studying the role of the GlyR in the acrosome reaction.

Abstract
Neurotransmitters are known to play an important role in the development of the nervous system. We recently generated transgenic mice that ectopically express tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and thereby produce dopamine (DA) de novo in pinealocytes of the pineal gland (PG). The transgenic PG also exhibited a dramatic decrease in TH-immunoreactive (IR) fibers putatively arising from the superior cervical ganglion (SCG) (Cho et al. [1996] Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 93:2862-2866). In the current study, however, we found that there was no reduction in the number of fibers immunostained for neurofilament protein or PGP9.5, markers known to be heavily localized in fibers, despite the reduction of TH fiber density. Therefore, we investigated whether the decreased TH-IR fiber density is the consequence of reduced sympathetic innervation, or a decrease in TH expression within innervating fibers. Immunohistochemical analysis comparing control and transgenic PG demonstrated no apparent differences in numbers of NPY- and aromatic-L-amino acid decarboxylase (AADC)-IR fibers, indicating that TH expression is decreased in a normal number of innervating fibers. Furthermore, presynaptic neurons in the transgenic SCG showed abnormal and heterogeneous TH immunoreactivity and reduced TH and norepinephrine transporter (NET) mRNA levels. These results show that ectopic DA production in the PG lowers TH and NET gene expression in the SCG without altering sympathetic innervation to the PG and suggest that the alteration of target neurotransmitter phenotype may influence gene expression of phenotype-specific proteins in projecting neurons.

Abstract
The major pathological lesion of Parkinson's disease (PD) is the selective cell death of dopaminergic (DA) neurons in substantia nigra (SN). Although the initial cause and subsequent molecular signaling mechanisms leading to DA cell death underlying the PD process remain elusive, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is thought to exert neuroprotective as well as neurotrophic roles for the survival and differentiation of DA neurons in SN. Addressing molecular mechanisms of BDNF action in both primary embryonic mesencephalic cultures and in vivo animal models has been technically difficult because DA neurons in SN are relatively rare and present with many heterogeneous cell populations in midbrain. We have developed and characterized a DA neuronal cell line of embryonic SN origin that is more accessible to molecular analysis and can be used as an in vitro model system for studying SN DA neurons. A clonal SN DA neuronal progenitor cell line SN4741, arrested at an early DA developmental stage, was established from transgenic mouse embryos containing the targeted expression of the thermolabile SV40Tag in SN DA neurons. The phenotypic and morphological differentiation of the SN4741 cells could be manipulated by environmental cues in vitro. Exogenous BDNF treatment produced significant neuroprotection against 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium, glutamate, and nitric oxide-induced neurotoxicity in the SN4741 cells. Simultaneous phosphorylation of receptor tyrosine kinase B accompanied the neuroprotection. This SN DA neuronal cell line provides a unique model system to circumvent the limitations associated with primary mesencephalic cultures for the elucidation of molecular mechanisms of BDNF action on DA neurons of the SN.

Abstract
Levels of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), the rate-limiting enzyme in catecholamine biosynthesis, are known to be upregulated in specific brain regions by chronic administration of drugs of abuse. Chronic morphine administration increases TH levels in the locus coeruleus and ventral tegmental area, whereas chronic cocaine administration increases TH levels in the ventral tegmental area only. While such upregulation of TH has been related to behavioral effects of the drugs, the mechanism underlying these adaptations has remained controversial. To study the possibility that upregulation of TH occurs at the transcriptional level, we investigated the effect of chronic morphine or cocaine treatment on the activity of the TH gene promoter (9.0 kb), coupled to the LacZ reporter gene, in transgenic mice. These TH9.0-LacZ mice have been shown to exhibit correct tissue-specific expression and regulation of the reporter gene. We show here that chronic (but not acute) exposure of the TH9.0-LacZ mice to morphine increases the expression of beta-galactosidase (which is encoded by the LacZ gene) in the locus coeruleus by twofold compared with sham-treated mice. In contrast, beta-galactosidase expression in the ventral tegmental area was decreased 20-25% by chronic morphine and unaffected by chronic cocaine administration. Similar results were obtained after analysis of TH mRNA levels in these brain regions by in situ hybridization. These results suggest that chronic morphine upregulates TH expression via transcriptional mechanisms in the locus coeruleus but by post-transcriptional mechanisms in the ventral tegmental area.

Abstract
The Anorexia (anx) mutation causes reduced food intake in preweanling mice, resulting in death from starvation within 3-4 weeks. We have found serotonin (5HT) hyperinnervation in the anx brain; altered noradrenergic (NE) innervation may also mediate eating disorders. We examined the expression of synthetic or catabolic monoamine enzyme genes in brainstem nuclei: serotonin transporter (5HTT) and monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) in the raphe nuclei (RN), and MAOA, norepinephrine transporter (NET), and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in the locus ceruleus (LC). We compared 3-week old anx with control and 24-h food-deprived wildtype littermates using in situ hybridization to measure mRNA levels by quantitative autoradiography. The anx mutation was correlated with decreased MAOA mRNA in the LC (but not RN), decreased 5HTT mRNA in the RN, and a trend towards lower NET mRNA in the LC. Food deprivation decreased MAOA mRNA in the LC (but not RN), increased TH mRNA in the LC, and did not alter NET or 5HTT mRNA levels. Thus, the effect of the anx mutation on MAOA expression in the LC paralleled the effect of food-deprivation, but the anx mutation and food-deprivation had differential effects on the expression of TH, NET, and 5HTT genes. Decreased 5HTT expression in the anx RN is consistent with upregulation of serotonergic neurotransmission that may accompany 5HT hyperinnervation. Central NE levels or innervation may be altered in anx mice by decreased expression of NET and MAOA and a lack of TH upregulation induced by food deprivation as in wild-type mice.

Abstract
The anorexia (anx) mutation causes reduced food intake in preweanling mice, resulting in death from starvation within 3-4 weeks. In wild-type rodents, starvation induces increased neuropeptide Y (NPY) mRNA levels in the arcuate nucleus that promotes compensatory hyperphagia. Despite severely decreased body weight and food intake at 3-weeks age, anx/anx mice do not show elevated NPY mRNA levels in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus compared to wild-type/heterozygous littermates. The NPY mRNA levels can be upregulated in normal mice at this chronological age, because 24-h food deprivation increased arcuate NPY mRNA in wild-type littermates. The unresponsiveness of NPY expression in the arcuate of anx/anx mice was paralleled by serotonergic hyperinnervation of the arcuate nucleus, comparable to the serotonergic hyperinnervation previously reported in the rest of the anx/anx brain. This result is consistent with the hypothesis that wasting disorders are accompanied by disregulation of NPY mRNA expression in the arcuate nucleus, and suggests that reduced food intake, the primary behavioral phenotype of the anx/anx mouse, may be the result of altered hypothalamic mechanisms that normally regulate feeding.

Ligation of the caeca significantly improved nitrogen balance and utilisation by up to more than 2 times as much as those of controls (P < 0.05). 3. The treatment significantly decreased uric acid excretion by 77 mg nitrogen/day (P < 0.01) and also total nitrogen excretion (P < 0.05): the former decrease almost explained the latter. 4. No effect of the ligation of caeca on urea and ammonia excretion was observed. 5. It is concluded that nitrogen metabolism in chickens is affected by possible changes in caecal fermentation by preventing entry into the caeca of substances from urine and digesta.

Abstract
An X-gal based histochemical assay was used to detect catecholamine (CA) cells in transgenic mouse embryos, in which the expression of the lacZ reporter was driven by the tissue-specific promoter of the rat tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) gene. As the first enzyme in the biosynthetic pathway for CA neurotransmitters, TH is a specific phenotypic marker for CA cells in the central and peripheral nervous systems of adult animals. During embryogenesis, TH expression appears permanently within CA-producing cells, and transiently within several other cell types. In this study we were able to monitor TH expression in transgenic mouse embryos by following the expression of the lacZ reporter in substantia nigral dopaminergic neurons in the central nervous system, the trigeminal (V) sensory ganglia, and dorsal root ganglia in the periphery. Our results demonstrate that the rat TH promoter-lacZ transgene provides an important experimental tool for monitoring catecholaminergic lineage cells during embryogenesis.
