Abstract
OBJECTIVE Decreased expression of the mitochondrial protein frataxin is the cause of the neurodegenerative disorder Friedreich's ataxia. In patients with cardiac disorders, the death rate of this disease is very high, up to 66%. In order to combat Friedreich ataxia, which is a potentially toxic disorder, de novo drug discovery and design have been created utilizing the approach of compound engineering with halogens. This study aimed to investigate the potential for effective treatment of Friedreich ataxia. MATERIALS AND METHODS The screening of twenty different agonist compounds was carried out in order to find the most promising agonist compound that may be used for molecular docking prediction against the Frataxin Protein. The compound with the lowest binding energies is then optimized by halogens. The final candidate's drug-like properties are identified through Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion, and Toxicity (ADMET) profiling. Lipinski's rule of five was checked. Molecular dynamic stimulations were evaluated. RESULTS The most potent agonist compound was identified out of twenty different compounds utilizing a docking approach against the Frataxin Protein. The compound with the lowest binding energies was next subjected to optimization by halogens. The optimized agonist 9-[1-[(1S, 5R)-8, 8-dimethyl-8-azoniabicyclo[3.2.1]octan-3-yl]triazol-4-yl]fluoren-9-ol has higher binding energy of -10.4Kcal/mol with molecular weight of 705.63 g/mol. Drug-like properties are identified through ADMET profiling, having water solubility of about -7.59, skin permeation -7.08 cm/s, bioavailability score 0.17, and high GI absorption. The candidate fulfills the Lipinski rule of five and portrays efficient molecular dynamic stimulations. CONCLUSIONS The selected agonist is one of the most potent compounds in increasing Frataxin protein expression. Furthermore, optimization with halogens can be a productive approach to improve the candidate's drug efficacy. The development of effective medications for the treatment of Friedreich ataxia would be aided by the results of these computational investigations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Staphylococcus aureus-induced toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare, but potentially fatal disease with limited treatment options. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains has led to a pressing need for the development of effective therapies. This study aimed to identify and optimize potential drug candidates against toxic shock syndrome by targeting the pathogenic toxin protein using chromones as lead compounds. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, 20 chromones were screened for their ability to bind to the target protein. The top compounds were further optimized through the addition of cycloheptane and amide groups, and the resulting compounds were evaluated for their drug-like properties using chemical absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity (ADMET) profiling. RESULTS Among the compounds screened, 7-Glucosyloxy-5-hydroxy-2-[2-(4-hydroxyphenyl) ethyl] chromone exhibited the highest binding affinity with a molecular weight of 341.40 g/mol and a binding energy of -10.0 kcal/mol. The optimized compound exhibited favorable drug-like properties, including high water solubility, synthetic accessibility, skin permeation, bioavailability, and gastrointestinal absorption. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that chromones can be engineered to develop effective drugs against TSS caused by S. aureus. The optimized compound has the potential to be a promising therapeutic agent for the treatment of TSS, providing new hope for patients suffering from this life-threatening disease of toxic shock syndrome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Acromegaly is a fatal and chronic disease that is caused by the abnormal secretion of growth hormone (GH) by the pituitary adenoma or pituitary tumor, resulting in an increased circulated concentration of insulin-like growth factors 1 (IGF-1), where in most of the cases it is secreted by a pituitary tumor. Higher levels of GH cause an increase in IGF-1 in the liver leading to multiple conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, glucose imbalance, cancer, and sleep apnea. Medical treatments such as surgery and radiotherapy can be used as the first choice of patients; however, specified human growth hormone control should be an essential treatment strategy due to an incidence rate of 0.2-1.1 yearly. Therefore, the main focus of this study is to develop a novel drug for treating acromegaly by exploiting medicinal plants that have been screened using phenol as a pharmacophore model to identify target therapeutic medicinal plant phenols. MATERIALS AND METHODS The screening identified thirty-four pharmacophore matches of medicinal plant phenols. These were selected as suitable ligands and were docked against the growth hormone receptor to calculate their binding affinity. The candidate with the highest screened score was fragment-optimized and subjected to absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) analysis, in-depth toxicity predictions, interpretation of Lipinski's rule, and molecular dynamic simulations to check the behavior of the growth hormone with the fragment-optimized candidate. RESULTS The highest docking energy was calculated as -6.5 K/mol for Bauhiniastatin-1. Enhancing the performance of Bauhiniastatin-1 against the growth hormone receptor with fragment optimization portrayed that human growth hormone inhibition can be executed in a more efficient and better way. Fragment-optimized Bauhiniastatin-1 (FOB) was predicted with high gastrointestinal absorption, a water solubility of -2.61 as soluble, and synthetic accessibility of 4.50, achieving Lipinski's rule of 5, with low organ toxicity prediction and interpreting a positive behavior against the targeted protein. The discovery of a de novo drug candidate was confirmed by the docking of fragment-optimized Bauhiniastatin-1 (FOB), which had an energy of -4,070 Kcal/mol. CONCLUSIONS Although successful and completely harmless, present healthcare treatment does not always eradicate the disease in some individuals. Therefore, novel formulas or combinations of currently marketed medications and emergent phytochemicals will provide new possibilities for these instances.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Intracranial aneurysms have a reported prevalence of 1%-2% in the general population. Currently, only patients with a strong family history or autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease are screened for intracranial aneurysms using MRA. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there are other specific patient populations at risk that should be offered screening for intracranial aneurysms. MATERIALS AND METHODS This is a retrospective case-control study of adult patients who underwent a screening MRA of their brain at our comprehensive stroke center from 2011 to 2020. Patients with a history of a known brain aneurysm were excluded. Data were extracted on patient demographics and medical comorbidities. Bivariate analyses were performed, followed by multivariable logistic regression, to identify factors associated with a positive MRA screen for incidental aneurysms. RESULTS Of 24,397 patients eligible for this study, 2084 screened positive for a possible intracranial aneurysm. On bivariate analysis, significant differences were present in the following categories: age, sex, race and ethnicity, chronic constipation, and hyperlipidemia. On logistic regression analysis, older age (+10 years: OR = 10.01; 95% CI, 10.01-10.02; P = .001), female sex (OR = 1.37; 95% CI, 1.24-1.51; P = .001), non-Hispanic Black (OR = 1.19; 95% CI, 1.02-1.40; P = .031), and Hispanic ethnicity (OR = 1.35; 95% CI, 1.16-1.58; P = .001) versus non-Hispanic White remained significant when adjusted for other factors. CONCLUSIONS Targeted screening for high-risk elderly women of Black or Hispanic descent will yield higher positive findings for brain aneurysms, which may mitigate the risk of rupture. Whether this is a cost-effective approach has yet to be determined.

Abstract
Holstein Friesian cows are known for their high milk yield. They are popular in the commercial dairy sector of Pakistan. Heat stress is a major challenge for these animals owing to the longer summer season with high ambient temperatures (35 - 40 °C) and relative humidity (30 - 50%) in the area (Butt et al., 2020). Mitigating the effects of heat stress requires substantial investments in energy and water. Spraying dairy cows with water in the holding pen or at the feed bunk is common practice as it lowers body temperature and respiration rate (Kendall et al., 2007; Chen et al., 2013; 2016), and improves feed intake and milk yield (Keister et al., 2002). Owing to the recent decrease in global groundwater, studies have focused on strategies to reduce the use of water to cool dairy cows (Chen et al., 2016). Sprinkler flow rates of 1.3 and 4.9 L/min had similar effects on physiological responses of cows to heat load but produced a 73% difference in water use (Chen et al., 2016). Similarly, Tresoldi et al. (2019) concluded that a sprinkler flow rate of 4.9 L/min had poor efficiency compared with 3.3 L/min, as the additional water did not result in increased biologically relevant cooling. These studies were conducted in Mediterranean climates with an average temperature humidity index in the range of 76 to 78. A recent study with Nili Ravi buffaloes revealed a sprinkler flow rate 1.25 L/min was more efficient than one of 2.0 L/min during subtropical summers (Bah et al., 2021). Because water is projected to be scarce in Pakistan by 2030 (Mustafa et al., 2013), holistic strategies for water conservation in the dairy sector are important nationally. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of various sprinkler flow rates on the performance of lactating Holstein Friesian cows in a typical corporate dairy farm setting during the subtropical summer. Performance of these cows was assumed to be similar, irrespective of the sprinkler flow rates.

Abstract
The present study was aimed to evaluate the growth performance and immune response of three genetic lines of Japanese quails. These lines i.e., selected for 4-week body-weight group (WBS), selected for egg number (EBS), and random-bred control (RBC), were selected for three consecutive generations from a base population of 1125 quails. In total, 2700 four-week-old quails from three selected groups were slaughtered in total of four generations (G0 to G3). Effects of selection and generations as well as their interactions were assessed for growth performance and immune response by applying a two-way analysis of variance. Significant means were compared with Duncan's Multiple Range Test. The statistical analysis showed a significant effect of selection and generations on most of the growth and immune response parameters. WBS in G3 presented significantly higher values of body weight, weight gain, and FCR than RBC and EBS. FCR was better in WBS during G3 than those of EBS and RBC. However, Livability% was highest in RBC while the lowest was noted in G3 of WBS line. Thymus% and spleen% were higher in EBS as compared to RBC and WBS. RBC presented a better B/S ratio and ND titer than those of EBS and WBS. The decreasing trend of ND titer in both lines of WBS and EBS as compared to RBC suggested a decrease in New Castle disease resistance in progressive generations of selection. It was concluded that selection for body weight and egg number has a positive impact on respective traits but negatively affects the immunity in later generations.

Abstract
Data on 2931 Kajli lambs, born from 2007 to 2018, were used to quantify environmental and genetic effects on growth performance of Kajli sheep. Traits considered for evaluation were birth weight (BWT), 120-day adjusted weight (120DWT), 180-day adjusted weight (180DWT), 270-day adjusted weight (270DWT), and 365-day adjusted weight (365DWT). Fixed effects of year of birth, season of birth, sex, birth type, and dam age on these traits were evaluated using linear procedures of SAS, 9.1. Similarly, BWT, 120DWT, 180DWT, and 270DWT were used as fixed effects mixed model analyses. Variance components, heritability and breeding values were estimated by restricted maximum likelihood. The genetic trend for each trait was obtained by regression of the estimated breeding values (EBV) on year of birth. Analyses revealed substantial influence of birth year on all traits. Sex and birth type were the significant sources of variation for BWT and 120DWT. Season of birth did not influence birth weight meaningfully, but had a significant role in the expression of 120DWT, 180DWT, and 270DWT. Heritability estimates were generally low (0.003 ± 0.018 to 0.099 ± 0.067) for all traits. With the exception of the genetic correlation of 180DWT and 365DWT, the genetic correlations between trait were strong and positive. Only 365DWT had a positive genetic trend. Although the heritability estimates for almost all weight traits were low, high and positive genetic correlations between BWT and other weight traits suggest that selection based on BWT would result in the improvement of other weight traits as a correlated response.Keywords: bodyweight, breeding value, genetic correlation, sheep

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to determine the best non-linear growth function to describe the growth of Kajli sheep. For this aim, the Brody, von Bertalanffy, Logistic, and Gompertz models were used to describe the sigmoidal relationship between bodyweight and age of the Kajli sheep. The records obtained from the Livestock Experiment Station, Khushab, were collected between 2007 and 2018. The records comprised 9864 age-weight observations (300 for male, 9564 for female, 7392 for single, 2388 for twin, and 84 for triplet lambs), which extended from birth to 12 months old. Candidate non-linear functions were fitted and the curve parameters were estimated by nlsfit (fit non-linear models) function in R statistical package, version 3.6.1. Goodness of fit criteria that were used to evaluate predictive performances of candidate models were adjusted coefficient of determination (R2adj), Akaike’s information criterion (AIC), Bayesian information criterion (BIC) and root means square error (RMSE). The Brody model was the best non-linear function that described the biological growth pattern of all, male, female, single, twin, and triplet lambs. Differences in curve parameter estimates between male and female suggested a definite pattern of sexual dimorphism. Moreover, a higher estimate of rate of maturity in female lambs reflects their early maturity compared with male Kajli lambs. Similarly, the single-born Kajli animals with highest maturity rate were maturing at an earlier age than twins and triplets. This is the first report on the non-linear pattern of visible changes in bodyweight of Kajli sheep from birth to 12 months old.Key words: age, bodyweight, growth curves, regression, sheep

Abstract
Pakistan has 30.9 million heads of sheep; however, little information is available on their reproductive aspects. The objective of this study was to document ovarian physiology and endocrinology of Lohi ewes during the oestrous cycle. Nine Lohi ewes, synchronized by administering single prostaglandin F2α (PGF2a; Cyclomate, Star Laboratories), were monitored for ovarian follicular dynamics using transrectal ultrasonography (7.5MHz, HS-1500, Honda) for two consecutive oestrous cycles during the breeding season (September to November 2018). Changes in plasma progesterone and oestradiol-17β concentrations of ewes (n=9) were also determined during the oestrous cycle using radioimmunoassay. The interovulatory interval of Lohi ewes averaged 17.0±0.1 days, and the duration of follicular and luteal phases was 4.6±0.2 and 11.3±0.2 days, respectively. Follicles emerged in either 3- or 4-wave patterns, but the frequency of the 3-wave pattern was higher than that of the 4-wave (87 vs. 13%, respectively; P=0.05). Following ovulation (Day 0), follicles (=3mm) in 3-wave cycles (n=14) emerged on Days 0.7, 5.2, and 10.5, whereas in 4-wave cycles (n=2) follicles emerged on Days 0.1, 4, 8.5, and 11.5. The maximum diameter of preovulatory follicles and corpora lutea (CL) were 5.4±0.3 and 10.4±0.3mm, respectively. Regardless of the wave pattern, single ovulation occurred in each cycle. The CL was first detectable on Day 4±0.1, it reached maximum diameter on Day 9±0.1, and luteolysis began on Day 12.2±0.2 of the cycle. The peak plasma oestradiol-17β concentration (42.5±2.6 pgmL−1) was observed 48h before ovulation and correlated with the diameter of the preovulatory follicle during the follicular phase (r=0.84; P<0.05). The peak plasma progesterone concentration (11.8±1.7ngmL−1) was observed on Day 9±0.1 and coincided with the diameter of CL throughout the oestrous cycle (r=0.93; P<0.05). In conclusion, the majority of oestrous cycles in Lohi ewes had a 3-wave pattern and were mono-ovulatory in nature.

Abstract
In Beetal goats under subtropical conditions, ovulatory response of first-wave dominant follicle based on diameter and day of oestrous cycle is unknown to date. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ovulatory response to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) relative to day and diameter of dominant follicle during the first follicular wave in Beetal goats. Fifty goats were synchronized using a single dose of prostaglandin F2α (75 µg; D+ cloprostenol, Fatro, Italy), and scanned every 6 hours for ovulation using a 7.5-MHz trans-rectal transducer (Honda HS: 1500, Japan). Following ovulation (Day 0), goats (n=40; 10/day) were given GnRH (25µg lecirelin, Fatro, Italy) on Days 2, 4, 6, and 8 of oestrous cycle. Follicular dynamics was monitored daily from D 0 until GnRH, and every 4 hours after GnRH until ovulation. Ovulation frequency relative to day and dominant follicular diameter was analysed by binary logistic regression, whereas diameter of dominant follicle at time of GnRH, ovulation time, time of wave emergence and growth rate of dominant follicle following GnRH were analysed by one-way ANOVA and independent sample t-test (SPSS 20, IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Eighty percent of the goats ovulated within 74.7±1.3h after prostaglandin F2α. Overall, 37% (14/38) of the goats ovulated following GnRH within 12.0±1.5h. Ovulations (%) following GnRH were higher (P=0.03) on Day 4 than 2 (60 v. 10%; i.e. 14 times higher than Day 2) and decreased gradually from Day 4 to 8 (P>0.05). Similarly, ovulations following GnRH were higher (P=0.00) in first-wave dominant follicles having diameter 6.1-7.0mm than those having less than 6.1mm (88v. 23%; i.e. 24 times higher than <6.1mm). Ovulations (%) decreased as the diameter of dominant follicle increased from 6.1-7.0mm (P>0.05). Diameters of ovulatory follicles at time of GnRH between Day 2, 4, 6, and 8 were not different (P>0.05). Regardless of day of GnRH treatment, diameter of ovulatory v. anovulatory follicles differed (6.44±0.03v. 5.1±0.4 mm; P=0.00). Overall, growth rate of dominant follicles following GnRH was 0.2±0.11mm and did not differ between ovulatory and anovulatory goats (0.29±0.13v. 0.13±0.15 mm; P>0.05). Interval to the emergence of a new wave following GnRH was prolonged for Day 4 compared to Day 2, 6, and 8 (i.e. 22v. 8, 11, and 12 h; respectively, P<0.05). In conclusion, GnRH treatment at Day 4 resulted in maximum ovulations as the first-wave dominant follicle reached a size of 6.1 to 7.0 mm.

Abstract
Oestrus induction is a challenging task during the nonbreeding season in goats. Therefore, our objective was to evaluate the efficacy of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) plus a 7-day CIDR-based protocol with or without eCG for the induction of oestrus and fertility in acyclic Beetal goats during the nonbreeding season under subtropical conditions. Based on the absence of corpus luteum via ultrasonography, goats (n=56; mean weight=32.8±0.5 kg; body condition scre=2.5±0.1) were inserted with a CIDR (300mg progesterone) along with GnRH (Day 0), and randomly treated either with eCG (400 IU; n=35) or without eCG (control; n=21) on Day 7. The CIDR was removed on Day 7 and all does were administered single dose of prostaglandin F2α (75µg cloprostenol; Fatro, Italy). Following CIDR insertion, ovarian follicular dynamics was monitored daily through a 7.5-MHz transrectal transducer (Honda HS 1500, Japan) until ovulation in a subset of eCG (n=11) and control goats (n=10). Oestrus was detected at every 12h after CIDR removal with aproned bucks and does were bred naturally. Pregnancy was detected 25 days after breeding by transrectal ultrasound. Data were analysed by t-test, ANOVA, and Chi-squared test using SPSS (version 20.0, SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Oestrus occurred more often following CIDR removal in eCG v. control goats (94v. 57%; P<0.05). Similarly, onset of oestrus was earlier (36.0±2.1v. 54.2±4.7 h; P<0.05) and the duration of oestrus was longer in eCG v. control goats (i.e. 30.2±1.3v. 22.1±2.3 h; P<0.05). However, diameter of preovulatory follicles and interval to ovulation after CIDR removal were similar between eCG and control goats (P>0.05). In contrast, growth rate of preovulatory follicle after CIDR removal until ovulation in eCG goats was greater, and ovulation rate was higher than control goats (0.7±0.1v. 0.3±0.1 mm/day; 2.2±0.2v. 1.4±0.2, respectively; P<0.05). In eCG goats, the dominant follicle grew rapidly between Days 8 to 9 (P<0.05), whereas within control goats the dominant follicle grew at consistent rate (P>0.05). After CIDR removal, percentage of ovulating goats in eCG was higher as compared to the control group (100v. 44%; P<0.05). Within control goats, size of the dominant follicle in ovulatory goats was greater at the time of CIDR removal than anovulatory goats (5.7±0.3v. 5.0±0.15 mm; P<0.05), whereas wave emergence tended to be earlier after CIDR insertion in anovulatory goats (4.2±1v. 2.6±0.4 days; P=0.09). Pregnancy rate 25 days postbreeding did not differ between eCG and control goats [i.e. 49% (16/33) v. 25% (3/12); odds ratio 2.9/1; P>0.05]. In conclusion, the eCG protocol resulted in higher oestrus response, ovulation rate, and 3 times higher pregnancy rate in anestrous goats during the nonbreeding season.

Abstract
A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary selenium (Se) sources (organic and inorganic Se at 0.30 ppm and basal diet at 0 ppm level of supplemented Se) on hatching traits in four varieties of Aseel chicken, Lakha, Mushki, Peshawari, and Mianwali. In total, 84 adult molted hens (50 wk old), 21 from each variety, were randomly assigned to 12 treatment groups in a 3 (Se diets) × 4 (Aseel varieties) factorial arrangement under a randomized complete block design. Each treatment was replicated 7 times with individual hens in each. Settable egg, fertility, hatch of fertile eggs, hatchability, A-grade chick, and embryonic mortality parameters were evaluated. The results indicated that the birds fed an organic Se supplemented diet had greater (P < 0.05) settable eggs, fertility, hatch of fertile eggs, hatchability, and A-grade chicks and reduced embryonic mortality than those fed inorganic or no Se. Among varieties, Mushki had lower (P < 0.05) fertility, hatch of fertile eggs, hatchability, and A-grade chicks than rest of three varieties. Interaction of Se sources and varieties indicated that dietary organic Se supplementation improved (P < 0.05) hatch of fertile eggs in Peshawari and Mianwali, whereas hatchability only in Peshawari variety and reduced embryonic mortality in Mianwali. It was concluded that dietary supplementation of organic Se could be used to improve hatching traits as well as reduce embryonic mortality in native Aseel chicken.

Abstract
This study evaluated subsequent effects of glycerin on productive performance, egg quality, and hatching traits in Japanese quail. A total of 200 birds was arranged according to a completely randomized design into 5 treatment groups having 5 replicates of 8 birds each (6 females and 2 males). Treatments consisted 5 levels of glycerin, i.e., 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10% and the control group. Birds were fed with different levels of glycerin during a rearing period of 6 wk and their subsequent effects on productive performance, egg quality, and hatching traits were observed. Data were collected regarding productive performance for 16 wk; however, egg quality and hatching traits were recorded during pre-peak (at fourth wk), peak (at 12th wk), and post peak (at 16th wk) phase. Productive performance, egg quality, and hatching traits did not differ significantly throughout the experimental period. It was concluded that glycerin can be used as a replacement energy source, having no effect on productive and reproductive performance in Japanese quail.

Abstract
The synthesis of FeTiO3-Ni(Ni80Fe20) core-shell nanostructures by a two-step method (sol-gel and DC electrodeposition) has been demonstrated. XRD analysis confirms the rhombohedral crystal structure of FeTiO3(FTO) with space group R3[combining macron]. Transmission electron microscopy clearly depicts better morphology of nanostructures with shell thicknesses of ∼25 nm. Room temperature magnetic measurements showed significant enhancement of magnetic anisotropy for the permalloy (Ni80Fe20)-FTO over Ni-FTO core-shell nanostructures. Low temperature magnetic measurements of permalloy-FeTiO3 core-shell structure indicated a strong exchange bias mechanism with magnetic coercivity below the antiferromagnetic Neel temperature (TN = 59 K). The exchange bias is attributed to the alignment of magnetic moments in the antiferromagnetic material at low temperature. Our scheme opens a path towards optimum automotive systems and wireless communications wherein broader bandwidths and smaller sizes are required.

Abstract
One-dimensional core-shell nanostructures consisting of a ferromagnetic cobalt core and a multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO) shell were fabricated by an artificial two-step methodology. The coupling between the ferromagnetic core and multiferroic shell manifests a significant exchange bias effect which gives a clear demonstration of the anti-ferromagnetic functionality of the BFO shell material. Exchange biases of 30 Oe and 60 Oe are observed at 300 K and at 5 K, respectively. Superparamagnetic contributions at lower temperatures play an important role in contributing to overall magnetic behavior. Dominant shape anisotropy causes parallel alignment of the easy magnetization axis along the axis of core-shell nanowires. A coherent mode of the magnetization reversal mechanism is observed by the angular dependence of coercivity (H c). This versatile two-step methodology can be employed to fabricate and investigate many other hybrid nanostructures leading to a vast scope of investigation for researchers.

Abstract
Hybrid core-shell nanostructures consisting of permalloy (Ni80Fe20) and multiferroic(BiFeO3, BFO/BiFe0.95Co0.05O3, BFC) materials were synthesized by a two-step method, based on wet chemical impregnation and subsequent electrodeposition within porous alumina membranes. Structural and magnetic characterizations have been done to investigate doping effect on magnetic properties and exchange bias. The magnetometry analysis revealed significant enhancements of the exchange bias and coercivity in NiFe-BFC core-shell nanostructures as compared with NiFe-BFO core-shell nanostructures. The enhancements can be attributed to the effective reduction of ferromagnet domain sizes between adjacent layers of core-shell structure. It indicates that it is possible to improve properties of multiferroic composites by site-engineering method. Our approach opens a pathway to obtain optimized nanostructured multiferroic composites exhibiting tunable magnetic properties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is well known that the incidence of nonsyndromal cleft lip and palate varies greatly according to ancestry: 0.3 to 0.4 per 1000 live births in blacks, one in 1000 in Caucasians, and two in 1000 in Asians and individuals from the central province of Saudi Arabia. Median cleft lip is a variable feature in oral-facial-digital syndrome type I (OFD-I). OBJECTIVE To test the hypothesis that genetic factors may determine the lip phenotype in OFD-I patients. METHODS A study involving 15 Saudi girls (from the central province of Saudi Arabia) with OFD-I showed a high rate (93.3%) of median cleft lip and palate. This rate in OFD-I patients is known to range from 33% to 56% in Caucasians and also known to be very low in blacks. The authors compared the rate of median cleft lip with or without cleft palate in the Arabian series (93.3%) with the rate in Caucasians and blacks. RESULTS The difference in median cleft lip with or without cleft palate among the three groups was significant. CONCLUSION This supports the hypothesis that ancestral genetic factors may determine the lip phenotype in OFD-I patients.

Abstract
The present investigation was performed in aspirin and pylorus ligation-induced ulcer model in Wistar rats, in which ability of ginger oil to provide gastric protection was studied at two different doses, 0.5 and 1 g/kg po. Gastric protection was evaluated by measuring the ulcer index, serum γ-GTP levels, total acidity of gastric juice and gastric wall mucus thickness. The results obtained in the present study indicated that ginger oil has a protective action against gastric ulcers induced by aspirin plus pylorus ligation in Wistar rats.

Abstract
The study was aimed at evaluating the antioxidant activity of an ethanol extract of Salix caprea L. (Salicaceae) flowers. The extract was found to possess a large amount of polyphenols and also exhibited a high reducing ability. The extract significantly and dose dependently scavenged DPPH, superoxide (O(2) (*-)), hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) and nitric oxide (NO). At a concentration of 250 microg/mL, 85.04% of DPPH radicals and at 500 microg/mL 45.97%, 17.97% and 56.53% of O(2) (*-), H(2)O(2) and NO, respectively, were scavenged by the S. caprea flower extract. A significant amount of protection was also afforded by the extract in the acute oxidative tissue injury animal model constituted by ferric nitrilotriacetate (FeNTA) induced hepatotoxicity in mice. An intraperitoneal administration of FeNTA at a dose of 9 mg/kg of body weight caused an elevation in hepatic lipid peroxidation (LPO) to 176.90% and a suppression in hepatic glutathione (GSH) content and the activities of antioxidant enzymes namely, catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) to 46.49%, 64.37%, 41.71% and 48.76%, respectively, of the saline treated control. The pretreatment of mice with S. caprea flower extract at a dose range of 50-150 mg/kg of body weight for 7 days followed by FeNTA treatment caused preservation of all these parameters. The present study indicates that the flowers of S. caprea possess a significant antioxidant and hepatoprotective property, the former being implicated in the latter.

Abstract
Large cardamom (fruit of Amomum subulatum Roxb, N.O. Zingiberaceae) commonly known as 'Heel kalan' or 'Bari Ilaichi' is used in Unani system of medicine in gastrointestinal disorders. A crude methanolic extract and its different fractions, viz. essential oil, petroleum ether (60-80 degrees ), ethyl acetate and methanolic fractions, were studied in rats for their ability to inhibit the gastric lesions induced by aspirin, ethanol and pylorus ligature. In addition their effects on wall mucus, output of gastric acid and pepsin concentration were recorded. The crude methanolic extract of A. subulatum and its fractions, viz. essential oil, petroleum ether and ethyl acetate, inhibited gastric lesions induced by ethanol significantly, but not those which were induced by pylorus ligation and aspirin. However, ethyl acetate fraction increased the wall mucus in pylorus ligated rats. The results suggest a direct protective effect of ethyl acetate fraction on gastric mucosal barrier. While the observation of decrease in gastric motility by essential oil and petroleum ether fractions suggests the gastroprotective action of the test drug. These investigations validate the use of 'Heel kalan' in gastrointestinal disorders by Unani physicians.

Abstract
'Gulnar farsi', male abortive flowers of Punica granatum L., are used for the treatment of diabetes mellitus in Unani medicine. Oral administration of its aqueous-ethanolic (50%, v/v) extract led to significant blood glucose lowering effect in normal, glucose-fed hyperglycaemic and alloxan-induced diabetic rats. This effect of the extract was maximum at 400 mg/kg, b.w.

Abstract
Cassia occidentalis L. (Caesalpiniaceae), commonly known as 'Kasondi', is used in Unani medicine for liver ailments and is an important ingredient of several polyherbal formulations marketed for liver diseases. The hepatoprotective effect of aqueous-ethanolic extract (50%, v/v) of leaves of kasondi was studied on rat liver damage induced by paracetamol and ethyl alcohol by monitoring serum transaminase (aspartate amino transferase and serum alanine amino transferase), alkaline posphatase, serum cholesterol, serum total lipids and histopathological alterations. The extract of leaves of the plant produced significant hepatoprotection.
