Genome-wide association study of body mass index in 23 000 individuals with and without asthma

BACKGROUND

Both asthma and obesity are complex disorders that are influenced by environmental and genetic factors. Shared genetic factors between asthma and obesity have been proposed to partly explain epidemiological findings of co-morbidity between these conditions.

OBJECTIVE

To identify genetic variants that are associated with body mass index (BMI) in asthmatic children and adults, and to evaluate if there are differences between the genetics of BMI in asthmatics and healthy individuals.

METHODS

In total, 19 studies contributed with genome-wide analysis study (GWAS) data from more than 23 000 individuals with predominantly European descent, of whom 8165 are asthmatics.

RESULTS

We report associations between several DENND1B variants (P = 2.2 × 10(-7) for rs4915551) on chromosome 1q31 and BMI from a meta-analysis of GWAS data using 2691 asthmatic children (screening data). The top DENND1B single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs) were next evaluated in seven independent replication data sets comprising 2014 asthmatics, and rs4915551 was nominally replicated (P < 0.05) in two of the seven studies and of borderline significance in one (P = 0.059). However, strong evidence of effect heterogeneity was observed and overall, the association between rs4915551 and BMI was not significant in the total replication data set, P = 0.71. Using a random effects model, BMI was overall estimated to increase by 0.30 kg/m(2) (P = 0.01 for combined screening and replication data sets, N = 4705) per additional G allele of this DENND1BSNP. FTO was confirmed as an important gene for adult and childhood BMI regardless of asthma status.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE

DENND1B was recently identified as an asthma susceptibility gene in a GWAS on children, and here, we find evidence that DENND1B variants may also be associated with BMI in asthmatic children. However, the association was overall not replicated in the independent data sets and the heterogeneous effect of DENND1B points to complex associations with the studied diseases that deserve further study.

HLA-DQ strikes again: genome-wide association study further confirms HLA-DQ in the diagnosis of asthma among adults

BACKGROUND

Asthma is a common chronic respiratory disease in children and adults. An important genetic component to asthma susceptibility has long been recognized, most recently through the identification of several genes (e.g., ORMDL3, PDE4D, HLA-DQ, and TLE4) via genome-wide association studies.

OBJECTIVE

To identify genetic variants associated with asthma affection status using genome-wide association data.

METHODS

We describe results from a genome-wide association study on asthma performed in 3855 subjects using a panel of 455 089 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).

RESULT

The genome-wide association study resulted in the prioritization of 33 variants for immediate follow-up in a multi-staged replication effort. Of these, a common polymorphism (rs9272346) localizing to within 1 Kb of HLA-DQA1 (chromosome 6p21.3) was associated with asthma in adults (P-value = 2.2E-08) with consistent evidence in the more heterogeneous group of adults and children (P-value = 1.0E-04). Moreover, some genes identified in prior asthma GWAS were nominally associated with asthma in our populations.

CONCLUSION

Overall, our findings further replicate the HLA-DQ region in the pathogenesis of asthma. HLA-DQA1 is the fourth member of the HLA family found to be associated with asthma, in addition to the previously identified HLA-DRA, HLA-DQB1 and HLA-DQA2.

Patterns of placental development evaluated by X chromosome inactivation profiling provide a basis to evaluate the origin of epigenetic variation

BACKGROUND

Inactivation of the maternally or paternally derived X chromosome (XCI) initially occurs in a random manner in early development; however as tissues form, a ‘patchiness’ will occur in terms of which X is inactivated if cells positioned near each other are clonally descended from a common precursor. Determining the relationship between skewed XCI in different tissues and in different samples from the same tissue provides a molecular assessment of the developmental history of a particular tissue that can then be used to understand how genetic and epigenetic variation arises in development.

METHODS

XCI skewing was evaluated in and compared between amnion, chorion, trophoblast and mesenchyme using multiple sampling sites from 14 term placentae. XCI was also evaluated in chorionic villus samples obtained at multiple sites and depths from four additional term placentae. The pattern of variation was then compared with methylation variation associated with the H19/IGF2 imprinting control region (ICR); promoter regions of KISS1, PTPN6, CASP8 and APC; and LINE-1 elements.

RESULTS

Mean placental level of skewing for amnion and chorion are correlated, consistent with a common developmental origin of at least a component of these membranes from inner cell mass derivatives subsequent to XCI, while trophoblast appears to be derived independently, consistent with its origin from the trophectoderm. Villus samples taken from different depths spanning the fetal to maternal side of the placenta were highly clonally related. Comparing patterns of clonal growth identified through XCI to the distribution of epigenetic variation in other genomic regions suggests that some variation arises early in development (e.g. LINE-1 methylation), whereas other variation arises predominantly after villus tree formation (e.g. methylation at H19/IGF2 ICR).

CONCLUSIONS

The patterns of XCI skewing are consistent with a model whereby each biopsied site of chorionic villi represents one or a few individual villus trees, each of which is clonally derived from only one or a few precursor cells. Sampling of placentae to evaluate changes associated with clinical pathology should be done with consideration of the tree-to-tree differences. A limitation of this study is the small number of placentas used and therefore placental-specific differences in variation could not be assessed.

19p13.2 microduplication causes a Sotos syndrome-like phenotype and alters gene expression

Up to 90% of individuals affected by Sotos syndrome have a pathogenic alteration of NSD1 (encodes nuclear receptor-binding Su-var, enhancer of zeste, and trithorax domain protein 1), a histone methyltransferase that functions as both a transcriptional activator and a repressor. Genomic copy number variations may also cause a Sotos-like phenotype. We evaluated a three-generation family segregating a Sotos-like disorder characterized by typical facial features, overgrowth, learning disabilities, and advanced bone age. Affected individuals did not have a detectable NSD1 mutation, but rather were found to have a 1.9 Mb microduplication of 19p13.2 with breakpoints in two highly homologous Alu elements. Because the duplication included the DNA methyltransferase gene (DNMT1), we assessed DNA methylation of peripheral blood and buccal cell DNA and detected no alterations. We also examined peripheral blood gene expression and found evidence for increased expression of genes within the duplicated region. We conclude that microduplication of 19p13.2 is a novel genomic disorder characterized by variable neurocognitive disability, overgrowth, and facial dysmorphism similar to Sotos syndrome. Failed compensation of gene duplication at the transcriptional level, as seen in peripheral blood, supports gene dosage as the cause of this disorder.

TSLP polymorphisms are associated with asthma in a sex-specific fashion

BACKGROUND

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) have been associated with IgE (in girls) and asthma (in general). We sought to determine whether TSLP SNPs are associated with asthma in a sex-specific fashion.

METHODS

We conducted regular and sex-stratified analyses of association between SNPs in TSLP and asthma in families of children with asthma in Costa Rica. Significant findings were replicated in whites and African-American participants in the Childhood Asthma Management Program, in African-Americans in the Genomic Research on Asthma in the African Diaspora study, in whites and Hispanics in the Children's Health Study, and in whites in the Framingham Heart Study (FHS).

MAIN RESULTS

Two SNPs in TSLP (rs1837253 and rs2289276) were significantly associated with a reduced risk of asthma in combined analyses of all cohorts (P values of 2 × 10(-5) and 1 × 10(-5) , respectively). In a sex-stratified analysis, the T allele of rs1837253 was significantly associated with a reduced risk of asthma in males only (P = 3 × 10(-6) ). Alternately, the T allele of rs2289276 was significantly associated with a reduced risk of asthma in females only (P = 2 × 10(-4) ). Findings for rs2289276 were consistent in all cohorts except the FHS.

CONCLUSIONS

TSLP variants are associated with asthma in a sex-specific fashion.

Evaluating DNA methylation and gene expression variability in the human term placenta

Obtaining representative samples from a term placenta for gene-expression studies is confounded by both within placental heterogeneity and sampling effects such as sample location and processing time. Epigenetic processes involved in the regulation of gene expression, such as DNA methylation, may show similar variability, but are less well studied. Therefore, we investigated the nature of within and between- placenta variation in gene expression and DNA methylation of genes that were chosen for being differentially expressed or methylated by cell type within the placenta.

METHODS

In total, two or more samples from each of 38 normal term placentae were utilized. The expression levels of CDH1, CDH11, ID2, PLAC1 and KISS1 were evaluated by real-time PCR. DNA methylation levels of LINE1 elements and CpGs within the promoter regions of KISS1, PTPN6, CASP8, and APC were similarly quantified by pyrosequencing.

RESULTS

Despite considerable sample-to-sample variability within each placenta, the within-placenta correlation for both gene expression and methylation was significant for each studied gene. Most of this variability was not due to sample location. However, between placental differences in gene expression were inflated by the dramatic effect of processing time (0-24 h) on mRNA levels, particularly for PLAC1 and KISS1 (both expressed in the apical syncytiotrophoblast). In contrast, DNA methylation levels remained relatively constant over this same time period.

CONCLUSION

Due to extensive site-to-site variability, multiple sampled sites are needed to accurately represent a placenta for molecular studies. Furthermore, mRNA quantitation of some genes may be hampered by its rapid degradation post-delivery (and possibly perinatally) and thus processing time should be considered in such analyses. Within-placenta correlations in expression and methylation from unrelated genes raise the possibility that methylation and expression variation may potentially reflect cell composition differences between samples rather than true differences occurring at the cellular level.

Risk factors for allergic rhinitis in Costa Rican children with asthma

BACKGROUND

Risk factors for allergic rhinitis (AR) in asthmatics are likely distinct from those for AR or asthma alone. We sought to identify clinical and environmental risk factors for AR in children with asthma.

METHODS

We performed a cross-sectional study of 616 Costa Rican children aged 6-14 years with asthma. Candidate risk factors were drawn from questionnaire data, spirometry, methacholine challenge testing, skin testing, and serology. Two outcome measures, skin test reaction (STR)-positive AR and physician-diagnosed AR, were examined by logistic regression.

RESULTS

STR-positive AR had high prevalence (80%) in Costa Rican children with asthma, and its independent risk factors were nasal symptoms after exposure to dust or mold, parental history of AR, older age at asthma onset, oral steroid use in the past year, eosinophilia, and positive IgEs to dust mite and cockroach. Physician-diagnosed AR had lower prevalence (27%), and its independent risk factors were nasal symptoms after pollen exposure, STR to tree pollens, a parental history of AR, inhaled steroid and short-acting beta2 agonist use in the past year, household mold/mildew, and fewer older siblings. A physician's diagnosis was only 29.5% sensitive for STR-positive AR.

CONCLUSIONS

Risk factors for AR in children with asthma depend on the definition of AR. Indoor allergens drive risk for STR-positive AR. Outdoor allergens and home environmental conditions are risk factors for physician-diagnosed AR. We propose that children with asthma in Costa Rica and other Latin American nations undergo limited skin testing or specific IgE measurements to reduce the current under-diagnosis of AR.

Decreased placental methylation at the H19/IGF2 imprinting control region is associated with normotensive intrauterine growth restriction but not preeclampsia

Many genes exhibiting genomic imprinting, parent-of-origin differences in gene expression, are involved in regulating placental and fetal growth. The goal of the present study was to assess whether abnormal regulation of imprinted genes is associated with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and/or preeclampsia (PET).

METHODS

Genomic DNA was extracted from at least two whole villi samples from control (N=22), IUGR (N=13), PET (N=17), and PET+IUGR (N=21) placentas. Methylation was assessed using the Illumina GoldenGate Methylation Cancer Panel I array and Pyrosequencing and MS-SNuPE assays.

RESULTS

The 11p15.5 ICR1 (associated with H19 and IGF2) methylation showed considerable intra-placental variability. Nonetheless, average methylation at this site was significantly decreased in normotensive IUGR placentas (p<0.001), but not in any other group. Methylation at ICR2 (KvDMR1; associated with CDKN1C and other maternally expressed 11p15.5 genes) was not significantly altered in any group and no significant changes in expression levels were observed in the genes controlled by this region. There were no significant methylation changes observed in any candidate imprinted gene evaluated by the Illumina array. LINE-1 methylation, a marker of whole genome methylation, was also similar in all groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Reduced methylation of ICR1 is associated with normotensive IUGR but not IUGR associated with preeclampsia, suggesting a different etiology of IUGR in this group. A reduction in placental IGF2 could be an adaptive response to restrict fetal growth in the presence of abnormal placentation or a response to poor fetal growth itself.

Association of VEGF polymorphisms with childhood asthma, lung function and airway responsiveness

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is an angiogenic factor implicated in asthma severity. The objective of the present study was to determine whether VEGF single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are associated with asthma, lung function and airway responsiveness. The present authors analysed 10 SNPs in 458 white families in the Childhood Asthma Management Program (CAMP). Tests of association with asthma, lung function and airway responsiveness were performed using PBAT software (Golden Helix, Inc. Bozeman, MT, USA; available at www.goldenhelix.com). Family and population-based, revpeated measures analysis of airflow obstruction were conducted. Replication studies were performed in 412 asthmatic children and their parents from Costa Rica. Associations with asthma, lung function and airway responsiveness were observed in both cohorts. SNP rs833058 was associated with asthma in both cohorts. This SNP was also associated with increased airway responsiveness in both populations. An association of rs4711750 and its haplotype with forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV(1))/forced vital capacity (FVC) ratio in both cohorts was observed. Longitudinal analysis in CAMP confirmed an association of rs4711750 with FEV(1)/FVC decline over approximately 4.5 yrs of observation. VEGF polymorphisms are associated with childhood asthma, lung function and airway responsiveness in two populations, suggesting that VEGF polymorphisms influence asthma susceptibility, airflow obstruction and airways responsiveness.

[Thiamine retention as a function of thermal processing conditions: canned salmon]

The present work studied the effect of different treatments at high temperatures on the nutritional properties of thiamine retention and color measurement experimentally. Canned salmon (Salmo salar) was processed under different temperatures and time conditions (110 degrees C for 135 minutes; 114 degrees C for 89 minutes; 118 degrees C for 69 minutes and 121 degrees C for 62 minutes). Thiamine was determined by HPLC before and after the process. Color changes, due to processing conditions, were also measured utilizing a Hunter colorimeter. The canning was prepared in 300 x 407 cans and sterilized until Fo value reached 6 min. The nutritional value or index represented by the B1 vitamin or thiamine was affected by high temperature and time exposition. The lowest loss of thiamine of 19.2% was obtained in the canned salmon sterilized at 114 degrees C for 89 minutes. The color in canned salmon was different from the raw material, with a severe loss of red color and a greater clarity of the meat.

An electrochemical study of the factors responsible for modulating the reduction potential of putidaredoxin

The gene coding for putidaredoxin has been synthesized using a combination of chemical and enzymatic methods and subsequently expressed in Escherichia coli. The recombinant protein characterized by electronic spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and electrochemistry was found to be identical to putidaredoxin obtained from Pseudomonas putida. Polylysine was found to promote the fast and reversible electrochemistry of putidaredoxin at negatively charged electrodes such as indium-doped tin oxide or gold surfaces modified with mercaptoalkanoate groups. The value of the heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant obtained from solutions containing a mixture of putidaredoxin and polylysine (k(s) = 1.3 x 10(-3) cm/s) is one order of magnitude larger than the values reported previously at gold electrodes modified with mercaptoethylamine or at antimony-doped tin oxide semiconductor electrodes. It was observed that when the reduction potential of putidaredoxin is measured by cyclic voltammetry, the resultant value is consistently more positive (64 mV) than the reduction potential measured with potentiometric titrations. A comparison between the electrochemical responses of putidaredoxin and spinach ferredoxin, combined with the examination of their corresponding three-dimensional structures, indicates that the positive shift in the reduction potential of putidaredoxin originates from the formation of a transient complex between putidaredoxin and polylysine at the electrode surface. The formation of this transient complex modulates the reduction potential of putidaredoxin by lowering the value of the dielectric constant around its iron-sulfur cluster microenvironment, specifically by neutralizing negative charges surrounding the active site and by excluding water from the solvent exposed iron sulfur cluster. The observed positive shift in E degrees ', which is induced by complexation with polylysine at the electrode-surface, suggests that similar factors are likely to contribute to the anodic shift in the E degrees ' of cytochrome P450(cam)-bound putidaredoxin (+44 mV) with respect to the E degrees ' measured for free putidaredoxin.

[Analysis of productivity, quality and cost of first grade laboratories: blood biometry]

OBJECTIVE

Assessment of productivity, quality and production costs and determination of the efficiency of top grade clinical laboratories in Mexico.

METHODS

Ten laboratories were selected from among the total number (52) existing in Mexico City, and the Donabedian model of structure, process and results were applied. Blood count was selected as a tracer.

RESULTS

The principal problems found were: inadequate distribution of trained human resources, poor glass material, inadequate analytic process and low productivity. These factors are reflected in the unit costs, which exceed reference laboratory costs by 200%. Only 50% of the laboratories analyzed generate reliable results. Only 20% of the laboratories studied operate efficiently.

CONCLUSIONS

To solve the problems identified requires integral strategies at different levels. A specific recomendation for the improvement of quality and productivity is an assessment of the cost/benefit of creating a central laboratory and using the remaining sites exclusively for the collection of samples.

[Nutritional features of elders living in poor communities of the Metropolitan Region of Chile]

BACKGROUND

The higher life expectancy of the Chilean population has required a greater concern about health and nutrition of elderly people.

AIM

To assess the alimentation of people over 65 years old, living in communities of the Metropolitan Region with high social vulnerability.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A random and representative sample of 257 elders living in the poorest communities of santiago was studied. They were interviewed in their homes about feeding patterns, the alimentation of the day before and their nutritional status. Mean energy and nutrient consumption and their fitting to FAO/WHO energy and National Research Council micronutrient recommendations were calculated. A feeding quality index, that considers the adequacy of consumption of all nutrients, was calculated.

RESULTS

Except for bread, median consumption of all groups of foods was below recommendations. Median energy and protein consumption was 1438 Kcal and 53.9 g in men and 1118 Kcal and 37.7 g in women. Adequacy of consumption of all nutrients was low and the intake of energy, protein, calcium, iron and folate was significantly lower in women than in men. The factors associated with feeding quality in these subjects were a last meal of the day before different from supper, more than 15 hours of morning fasting and sex.

CONCLUSIONS

Alimentation of elders living in poor communities of Santiago is severely deficient. Focalized intervention models to improve this situation should be devised.

[Teaching of health economics in Mexico: 5-year experience]

Teaching strategies for a new specialty constitute a challenge to ensure the rapid development of human resources for the purpose of supporting these activities. In the health economics field a plan was applied for coping with the needs of teaching activities in the field. The activities developed in the plan are presented in this paper, included under the following items: A. Theoretical organization of the contents of the subject. B. Organization of contents according to the students' needs. C. Support given to teachers. D. The whole strategy also includes: academic interchange, technical advisory services, dissemination of results through meetings, publications and academic organizations. E. Median term agenda: Human resources; Financial resources; Teaching strategies; Interaction between health services and decision makers; and Collaborative network.

[The radiofrequency ablation of accessory pathways. The initial experience in Mexico]

Thirteen patients with paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) due to an accessory pathway were submitted to an electrophysiological study and radiofrequency ablation of the Kent bundle. There were 9 males and 4 females. The mean age was 22 years. Other than their SVT, none had any structural heart disease. Ten of them had Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, and three had concealed accessory pathways. Two different types of radiofrequency devices were used: one generating damped sinusoid waves, and two other generators producing pure continuous sinusoid waves. With the first type, two attempts were made: one patient with a concealed pathway and one with overt preexcitation. The successful ablation was not achieved because this wave type is 100 times more powerful, it desiccates the tissue, and thus does not produce the right kind of lesion. The other eleven patients were divided in three groups: I) With left overt preexcitation (7 pts) II) Concealed left Kent bundles (2 pts) III) Right Kent bundles. Ablation was 100% successful in group I, while in the other two groups, only one patient of each was successfully ablated. The overall successful rate of these 3 groups was 81.8%. Of the two patients that could not be treated, one had an anterior septal Kent bundle and the other had a concealed left Kent bundle. We believe that catheter ablation is a very promising therapeutic procedure for patients with SVT, besides being a extraordinary instrument that will enable us to be able to understand further clinical electrophysiology.

The clinical and immunologic response of Chilean infants to Haemophilus influenzae type b polysaccharide-tetanus protein conjugate vaccine coadministered in the same syringe with diphtheria-tetanus toxoids-pertussis vaccine at two, four and six months of age

The safety and immunogenicity of a vaccine against Haemophilus influenzae type b consisting of purified polyribosylribitolphosphate conjugated to tetanus toxoid (PRP-T) was evaluated in 278 Chilean infants who were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups: Group A, PRP-T mixed with diphtheria-tetanus toxoids-pertussis (DTP) vaccine in a single syringe and given as a single inoculation in one arm and placebo in the other arm; Group B, PRP-T given in one arm and DTP in the other arm; Group C, DTP given in one arm and placebo in the other. Infants were immunized at 2, 4 and 6 months of age and examined daily for 4 days after each immunization; serum PRP antibodies were measured at baseline and 2 months after each dose. The only adverse systemic reaction attributable to PRP-T beyond that caused by DTP alone was a 7 to 20% increase in febrile responses in the first 24 hours after the first and second doses of vaccine; the fevers were largely low grade and not accompanied by increased irritability, diminished activity or loss of appetite, compared with the group who received DTP without PRP-T. After the first dose 72% of infants who received PRP-T combined with DTP and 67% who received it in a separate arm attained antibody concentrations greater than or equal to 0.15 micrograms/ml. After two doses of PRP-T, 93 and 95%, respectively, had concentrations greater than or equal to 0.15 microgram/ml and after three doses 100% of infants who received PRP-T had such titers.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Sex differences in growth hormone response to growth hormone-releasing hormone

The aim of the present study was to ascertain whether sex differences exist in GH response to GHRH, and the influence that menstrual cycle have on this response. A GHRH test was performed on nine healthy men and ten women on days one and twelve of the menstrual cycle. Basal GH levels, (mean +/- SE) (7.98 +/- 3.09 ng/ml in women and 0.13 +/- 0.07 ng/ml in men, p less than 0.05) as well as maximal GH response (40.17 +/- 11.96 ng/ml in women and 9.63 +/- 2.32 ng/ml in males, p less than 0.01) were significantly higher in women than in men. In spite of a significant increase in estradiol levels during the menstrual cycle (75.88 +/- 2.48 pg/ml on day one and 198.40 +/- 28.65 pg/ml on day twelve, p less than 0.01) neither basal plasma GH levels, nor GH response to GHRH were significantly different. In conclusion, these results confirm that GH response to GHRH is higher in women than in men, and that this difference is not modified during the first phase of the menstrual cycle.

Effects of somatostatin on gastric mucosal histamine and serotonin content in restrained rats

The effects of continuous intravenous perfusion of somatostatin on the incidence of ulcers and the histamine and serotonin gastric mucosal content in rats subjected to 12 h of restraint were studied. 51 sets of Sprague-Dawley male rats (102 animals) were divided at random into two groups. Those in group I were immobilized and treated with an intravenous infusion of isotonic saline solution. Animals in group II were also immobilized and given intravenous cyclic somatostatin dissolved in isotonic saline solution; the initial dose was 25 microgram and a continuous infusion of 2.5 microgram/kg/h was administered thereafter. A decrease in the ulcer index was observed in the rats perfused with somatostatin (p less than 0.01) as well as a decrease in the histamine (p less than 0.001) and serotonin (p less than 0.01) gastric mucosal contents. These effects of somatostatin on restraint-induced stress ulcer in rats are probably to be explained by microcirculatory changes in the gastric mucosa determined by the vasoactive amines (histamine and serotonin). They constitute an important factor in the pathogenesis of these lesions.

T rosettes in alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver

Thirty patients with alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver were studied for in vivo and in vitro correlates of cellular immunity. Seventy-seven percent failed to be sensitized to dinitrochlorobenzene, indicating impairment of the in vivo cellular immune response. A significant decrease in the number of T-rosette-forming cells was observed in this group of patients (.01 smaller than P smaller than .025). This finding suggests that the active T-rosette test is a valuable tool in detecting partial alterations in cell-mediated immunity in alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver. Our results also suggest that rosette formation is a more sensitive indicator of cell-mediated immunity than phytohemagglutinin-stimulated blastogenesis in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver.
