Abstract
In a series of high performance diverted discharges on DIII-D, we demonstrate that strong negative triangularity (NT) shaping robustly suppresses all edge-localized mode (ELM) activity over a wide range of plasma conditions: ⟨n⟩=0.1-1.5×10^{20} m^{-3}, P_{aux}=0-15 MW, and |B_{t}|=1-2.2 T, corresponding to P_{loss}/P_{LH08}∼8. The full dataset is consistent with the theoretical prediction that magnetic shear in the NT edge inhibits access to ELMing H-mode regimes; all experimental pressure profiles are found to be at or below the infinite-n ballooning stability limit. Our present dataset also features edge pressure gradients in strong NT that are closer to an H-mode than a typical L-mode plasma, supporting the consideration of NT for reactor design.

Abstract
Objectives Fatigue can decrease knee stability and increase the injury risk. However, fatigue is rarely being applied throughout movement analysis. The aim of this study was to investigate if the knee stability throughout SLDLs differ between cyclic and acyclic sports, before and after fatigue in general, and between the dominant and non-dominant leg of soccer players. Methods A total of 43 active male (n = 34) and female (n = 9) athletes (age: 26.5 ± 7.2) participated in this study with a pre-post-design. Subjects performed a single leg drop landing (SLDL) from a plyobox. For each leg, the two-dimensional frontal plane projection angle (FPPA) was analyzed. After pretesting the shuttle run test was performed until exhaustion, before repeating the measurements. Results ANOVA with repeated measures was applied and identified no significance difference for the FPPA between cyclic and acyclic sports (F = 0.98, p = 0.33), a significant difference before and after fatigue (F = 12.49, p = 0.002) and no significant difference between the dominant and non dominant leg of soccer players (F = 4.35, p = 0.26). Discussion Fatigue seems to be able to have a significant influence on knee stability in the frontal axis. Therefore, fatigue should be included in motion analysis for injury prevention and return to play tests because during this physical state most injuries happen.

Abstract
The L-H transition power threshold (PLH) in favourable magnetic geometry (ion ∇B drift pointing towards X-point) is much lower than in the unfavourable magnetic geometry (ion ∇B drift pointing away from X-point) on multiple tokamaks. In a systematic experiment on DIII-D, the ion ∇B drift direction was changed continuously from the unfavourable to favourable configuration during plasma discharges. During such process, the input neutral beam power was kept constant at a value that was above PLH for favourable configuration, but lower than PLH for unfavourable configuration. Toroidal field and plasma current were also kept constant and there was little change in the edge electron density ne and electron temperature Te profiles. The density fluctuation amplitude was reduced approaching the transition, while a large increase of turbulence Reynolds stress and flow shear were simultaneously observed. The turbulence decorrelation rate was found to increase as the ion ∇B drift direction was moving towards the favourable configuration, but the flow shear also increased and exceeded the turbulence decorrelation rate. These measurements demonstrate an important correlation between turbulence and turbulence-driven flow and a lowering of PLH, provide insights into the underlyingphysics behind the hidden parameters and inform a more complete physics-based model of the L-H transition power threshold. Abstract
The material properties of the cells and tissues of an organism dictate, to a very large degree, the ability of the organism to cope with mechanical stress induced by externally applied forces. It is, therefore, critical to understand how these properties differ across diverse species and how they have evolved. Herein, a large data base (N = 84 species) for the mechanical properties of wood samples measured at biologically natural moisture contents (i.e., "green wood") was analyzed to determine the extent to which these properties are correlated across phylogenetically diverse tree species, to determine if a phylogenetic pattern of trait values exists, and, if so, to assess whether the rate of trait evolution varies across the phylogeny. The phylogenetic comparative analyses presented here confirm previous results that critical material properties are significantly correlated with one another and with wood density. Although the rates of trait evolution of angiosperms and gymnosperms (i.e., conifers) are similar, the material properties of both clades evolved in distinct selective regimes that are phenotypically manifested in lower values across all material properties in gymnosperms. This observation may be related to the structural differences between gymnosperm and angiosperm wood such as the presence of vessels in angiosperms. Explorations of rate heterogeneity indicate high rates of trait evolution in wood density in clades within both conifers and angiosperms (e.g., Pinus and Shorea). Future analyses are warranted using additional data given these preliminary results, especially because there is ample evidence of convergent evolution in the material properties of conifers and angiosperm wood that appear to experience similar ecological conditions.

Abstract
Physical principles and laws determine the set of possible organismal phenotypes. Constraints arising from development, the environment, and evolutionary history then yield workable, integrated phenotypes. We propose a theoretical and practical framework that considers the role of changing environments. This 'ecomechanical approach' integrates functional organismal traits with the ecological variables. This approach informs our ability to predict species shifts in survival and distribution and provides critical insights into phenotypic diversity. We outline how to use the ecomechanical paradigm using drag-induced bending in trees as an example. Our approach can be incorporated into existing research and help build interdisciplinary bridges. Finally, we identify key factors needed for mass data collection, analysis, and the dissemination of models relevant to this framework.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A recently proposed synergistic photodynamic therapy protocol (s-PDT) combining advantages of both conventional- and daylight-PDT proved to be an effective and almost painless treatment for patients with actinic keratoses (AKs). This study investigated the safety and efficacy of an additional ablative fractional CO2-laser (AFXL) pretreatment. METHODS 28 patients with AKs on the head received s-PDT using 5-aminolevulinic acid. AFXL pretreatment was conducted using the following parameters: pulse energy 8 mJ, spot density 50 spots/cm2, power 30 W, beam size 4-18 mm. Outcome was assessed by AK area and severity index (AKASI) and lesion count (LC) before and 3 months after treatment. Safety was monitored by blood pressure and pulse measurements. Intensity of pain was determined by use of a visual analog scale (VAS). RESULTS Most patients (96.4 %) showed a significant AKASI reduction (P < 0.0001) 3 months after PDT (median AKASI 1.6 [0-2.4]) compared to baseline (5.3 [4-7.75]). Median reduction rate was 75.5 % (61.3 %-100 %). Eleven patients (39.3 %) achieved AKASI 100, three (10.7 %) AKASI 75 and ten (35.7 %) AKASI 50. Blood pressure and pulse did not change significantly throughout treatment. Median VAS for pain during irradiation was 0 (0-0), 0 (0-2) and 0 (0-2) at the beginning, in the meantime and at the end, respectively. Compared to data without AFXL pretreatment, this study showed significantly higher AKASI and LC reduction rates (75.5 % vs. 63.7 % [P = 0.023] and 91.3 % vs. 80.4 % [P = 0.043]). CONCLUSIONS S-PDT with AFXL pretreatment represents a safe and almost painless treatment for patients with AKs on the head and improves treatment efficacy.

Abstract
Owls and nightbirds are nocturnal hunters of active prey that combine visual and hearing adaptations to overcome limits on sensory performance in low light. Such sensory innovations are unknown in nonavialan theropod dinosaurs and are poorly characterized on the line that leads to birds. We investigate morphofunctional proxies of vision and hearing in living and extinct theropods and demonstrate deep evolutionary divergences of sensory modalities. Nocturnal predation evolved early in the nonavialan lineage Alvarezsauroidea, signaled by extreme low-light vision and increases in hearing sensitivity. The Late Cretaceous alvarezsauroid Shuvuuia deserti had even further specialized hearing acuity, rivaling that of today's barn owl. This combination of sensory adaptations evolved independently in dinosaurs long before the modern bird radiation and provides a notable example of convergence between dinosaurs and mammals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Actinic keratosis (AK) is a common precancerous lesion of the skin that may be treated with chemical peelings. Despite their long-standing usage and clinical experience, no evidence-based recommendation regarding the efficacy and safety of chemical peelings for AK exists. OBJECTIVES To systematically review and synthesize the current knowledge on chemically exfoliative peelings as interventions for AK. METHODS We performed a systematic literature research in Medline, Embase and CENTRAL and hand-searched pertinent trial registers for eligible records until 5 August 2019. Results from individual studies were pooled using a random-effects model or described in a qualitative synthesis. The risk of bias was estimated with the tools provided by the Cochrane Collaboration (randomized and non-randomized trials) and the Evidence Project (single-arm trials). RESULTS Four randomized controlled trials, two non-randomized controlled trials and two single-arm studies with a total sample size of n = 170 patients were included. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) plus Jessner's solution showed significantly lower participant complete clearance (RR 0.36, 95% CI: 0.14-0.90, two studies, I2 = 0%, P = 0.03) and lower lesion clearance (RR 0.92, 95% CI: 0.85-0.99, one study, P = 0.03) compared to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) 5% cream. TCA as monotherapy showed lower lesion complete clearance (RR 0.75, 95% CI: 0.69-0.82, two studies, I2 = 7%, P < 0.001) and lower mean lesion reduction per patient compared to conventional photodynamic therapy (cPDT) (MD -20.48, 95% CI: -31.55 to -9.41, two studies, I2 = 43%, P = 0.0003). Pain was more pronounced in patients treated with cPDT in comparison with TCA (MD -1.71 95% CI: -3.02 to -0.41, two studies, I2 = 55%, P = 0.01). In the single-arm studies, 5-FU plus glycolic acid showed 92% lesion clearance and phenol peeling 90.6% participant complete clearance. All studies showed a high risk for bias. CONCLUSIONS Future high-quality studies and a standardization of peeling protocols are warranted to determine the value of chemical peelings in the treatment of AK.

Abstract
Many vertebrates are armored over all or part of their body. The armor may serve several functional roles including defense, offense, visual display, and signal of experience/capability. Different roles imply different tradeoffs; for example, defensive armor usually trades resistance to attack for maneuverability. The poachers (Agonidae), 47 species of scorpaeniform fishes, are a useful system for understanding the evolution and function of armor due to their variety and extent of armoring. Using publically available CT-scan data from 27 species in 16 of 21 genera of poachers we compared the armor to axial skeletal in the mid body region. The ratio of average armor density to average skeleton density ranged from 0.77 to 1.17. From a defensive point of view, the total investment in mineralization (volume * average density) is more interesting. There was 10 times the material invested in the armor as in the endoskeleton in some small, smooth plated species, like Aspidophoroides olrikii. At the low end, some visually arresting species like Percis japonica, had ratios as low as 2:1. We categorized the extent and type (impact vs. abrasion) in 34 Agonopsis vulsa across all 35+ plates in the eight rows along the body. The ventral rows show abrasive damage along the entire length of the fish that gets worse with age. Impact damage to head and tail plates gets more severe and occurs at higher rates with age. The observed damage rates and the large investment in mineralization of the armor suggest that it is not just for show, but is a functional defensive structure. We cannot say what the armor is defense against, but the abrasive damage on the ventrum implies their benthic lifestyle involves rubbing on the substrate. The impact damage could result from predatory attacks or from intraspecific combat.

Abstract
Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is the second most common non-melanoma skin cancer. Histology represents the gold standard to confirm the diagnosis of cSCC and is mandatory to determine important findings for tumour grading, such as tumour thickness, depth of invasion, degree of differentiation and histological subtype, perineural and vascular invasion, and assessing tumour margins. In daily clinical practice, the combination of clinical and histological features should be considered when grading the tumours and treating the patients, accordingly. This article aims to provide a structured overview of the most common histological findings of in situ and invasive cSCCs, namely those relevant to their severity, and should facilitate the understanding and evaluation of these results.

Abstract
The sauropterygian clade Plesiosauria arose in the Late Triassic and survived to the very end of the Cretaceous. Plesiosauria evolved the greatest species diversity of any marine reptile clade, attaining a global distribution. Plesiosauria consist of two clades, Rhomaleosauridae and Neoplesiosauria. Basal Neoplesiosauria have long necks with at least 30 cervicals, but show qualitative osteological evidence for a stiff neck. Here we quantify neck mobility in lateral, ventral, and dorsal directions based on finite element modeling of neck vertebrae from the Middle Jurassic plesiosaur Cryptoclidus eurymerus. We model the mobility in a single motion segment, consisting of two adjacent cervical vertebrae and the joints connecting them. Based on the model with a maximum intervertebral spacing of 3 mm, we find that in Cryptoclidus, the maximum angle of lateral deflection in the motion segment was 2°. The maximum angle of ventral deflection was 5° and of dorsal deflection was 5°. When these values are multiplied by the number of cervical vertebrae, it becomes apparent that neck mobility was limited in all directions. The maximum angle of total lateral deflection in the neck was 67°. The maximum angle of total ventral deflection was 148° and of total dorsal deflection was 157°. This raises the question of the function of such a long, multi-segment but immobile neck. We posit that the long neck served in hydrodynamic and visual camouflage, hiding the bulk of the body from the small but abundant prey, such as schooling fish and squid. Neck immobility may have been advantageous in withstanding strong hydrodynamic forces acting on the neck during predatory strikes.

Abstract
Abstract
Terrestrial animals move in complex habitats that vary over space and time. The characteristics of these habitats are not only defined by the physical environment, but also by the photic environment, even though the latter has largely been overlooked. For example, numerous studies of have examined the role of habitat structure, such as incline, perch diameter, and compliance, on running performance. However, running performance likely depends heavily on light level. Geckos are an exceptional group for analyzing the role of the photic environment on locomotion as they exhibit several independent shifts to diurnality from a nocturnal ancestor, they are visually-guided predators, and they are extremely diverse. Our initial goal is to discuss the range of photic environments that can be encountered in terrestrial habitats, such as day versus night, canopy cover in a forest, fog, and clouds. We then review the physiological optics of gecko vision with some new information about retina structures, the role of vision in motor-driven behaviors, and what is known about gecko locomotion under different light conditions, before demonstrating the effect of light levels on gecko locomotor performance. Overall, we highlight the importance of integrating sensory and motor information and establish a conceptual framework as guide for future research. Several future directions, such as understanding the role of pupil dynamics, are dependent on an integrative framework. This general framework can be extended to any motor system that relies on sensory information, and can be used to explore the impact of performance features on diversification and evolution.

Abstract
Geckos feature a large range of eye sizes, but what drives this phenotypic diversity is currently unknown. Earlier studies point towards diel activity patterns (DAPs) and locomotory mode, but phylogenetic comparative studies in support of the proposed adaptive mode of eye evolution are lacking. Here, we test the hypothesis of DAPs as the driver of eye size evolution with a dataset on 99 species of gecko. Results from phylogenetic generalized least-square analysis (PGLS) and multivariate model-fitting reveal smaller eyes in diurnal geckos consistent with different phenotypic optima. However, Bayesian analyses of selective regime shifts demonstrate that only two of nine transitions from nocturnal to diurnal activity are coupled with decreases in eye size, and two other regime shifts are not associated with DAP transitions. This non-uniform evolutionary response suggests that eye size is not the only functionally relevant variable. Evolutionary adaptations may therefore include different combinations of several traits (e.g. photoreceptors), all with the same functional outcome. Our results further demonstrate that DAP only partially explains eye size diversity in geckos. As open habitats favour the evolution of large eyes while obstructed habitats favour small eyes, the degree of habitat clutter emerges as another potential axis of eye diversification.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mutations in kinetochore gene KNSTRN accelerate the development of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and may correlate with different histological classifications of actinic keratosis (AKs). OBJECTIVE To determine KNSTRN gene mutation frequency in healthy skin (HS), actinically damaged skin (ADS), in AKs with different histomorphological gradings and invasive SCCs. METHODS All samples were histologically evaluated. AK lesions were additionally classified according to their upwards (AK I-III) and downwards (PRO I-III) directed growth pattern. Mutation analyses of all samples were performed using the Sanger method. RESULTS With one exception, all detected mutations in KNSTRN gene showed an alanine-to-glutamate substitution at codon 40 (p.Ala40Glu). p.Ala40Glu mutation was found in 6.9% (2/29) of HS, in 16.1% (5/31) of ADS, in 18.3% (20/109) of AKs and in 30.0% (9/30) of invasive SCCs. Further stratification of AKs using the common AK classification of Röwert-Huber revealed the p.Ala40Glu mutation in 14.7% (5/43), 13.3% (4/30) and 24.4% (11/45) (AK I, II and III). In contrast, the new PRO classification showed a distribution of 3.6% (1/28) in PRO I, 21.7% (13/60) in PRO II and 28.6% (6/21) in PRO III. Mutation frequency in HS showed significant differences compared to AKs classified as PRO III and invasive SCCs (P < 0.05). In contrast, there were no statistically significant differences between HS and AKs when classified according to Röwert-Huber. CONCLUSIONS Recurrent somatic mutation p.Ala40Glu in KNSTRN gene is associated with basal proliferating AKs in accordance with invasive SCCs. This supports the impact of basal proliferative pattern in terms of progression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Actinic keratoses (AKs) can histologically be classified by the extent of atypical keratinocytes throughout the epidermis or their pattern of basal proliferation. Currently, no data on the inter-rater reliability of both scores is available. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the inter-rater reliability of the two classification schemes; histological grade (AK I-III) and basal proliferation (PRO I-III). METHODS Histological images of 54 AKs were classified by 21 independent dermatopathologists with regard to basal proliferation (PRO I-III), histological grade (AK I-III) and assumed risk of progression into invasive carcinoma. RESULTS Overall, of the 54 AKs 16.7% (9/54) were classified as AK I, 66.7% (36/54) as AK II, and 16.7% (9/54) as AK III. With regards to basal growth pattern, 25.9% (14/54) were classified as PRO I, 42.6% (23/54) as PRO II, and 31.5% (17/54) as PRO III. We observed a highly significant inter-rater reliability for PRO-grading (P < 0.001) which was higher than for AK-grading (Kendall's W coefficient: AK = 0.488 vs. PRO = 0.793). We found substantial agreement for assumed progression risk for AKs with worsening basal proliferation (k = 0.759) compared to moderate agreement (k = 0.563) for different AK-gradings. CONCLUSIONS Histological classification of basal growth pattern (PRO) showed higher inter-rater reliability compared to the established classification of atypical keratinocytes throughout epidermal layers. Moreover, experienced dermatopathologists considered basal proliferation to be more important in terms of progression risk than upwards directed growth patterns. It should be considered to classify AKs according to their basal proliferation pattern (PRO I-III).

Abstract
Accurate operation and high performance of the open field line plasma surrounding the field reversed configuration is crucial to achieving the goals of successful temperature ramp up and confinement improvement on C-2W. Knowledge and control of the open field line plasma requires extensive diagnostic efforts. A suite of diagnostics, which consists of microwave interferometry, dispersive spectroscopy, and spatial heterodyne spectroscopy, is being developed to measure electron density, ion temperature, and particle outflow velocity at various locations along the open magnetic field lines. A detailed overview of these diagnostics is presented.

Abstract
A versatile combination Doppler backscattering and Cross-Polarization Scattering (CPS) diagnostic for the C-2W beam-driven field-reversed configuration is described. This system is capable of measuring density fluctuations and perpendicular magnetic field fluctuations across a wide wavenumber range (2.5 ≤ k θ ρ s ≤ 50), with typical resolution Δk θ/k θ ≤ 0.4-0.8. Four tunable frequencies (26 GHz ≤ f ≤ 60 GHz corresponding to plasma cut-off densities 0.8 × 1019 ≤ n e ≤ 4.4 × 1019 m-3) are launched via quasi-optical beam combiners/polarizers and an adjustable parabolic focusing mirror selecting the beam incidence angle. GENRAY ray tracing shows that the incident O-mode and backscattered CPS X-mode beam trajectories for C-2W plasma parameters nearly overlap, allowing simultaneous detection of ñ and B̃ r or B̃ θ from essentially the same scattering volume.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mid-dermal elastolysis (MDE) is a rare skin condition, characterized by selective loss of elastic fibres in the mid dermis. The pathogenesis of MDE is still unclear. AIM To investigate expression of lysyl oxidase-like 2 (LOXL2) in a reasonable sample of patients with MDE and to search for mutations in LOXL2. METHODS We investigated archived lesional tissue of 13 patients with MDE and skin tissue samples of 10 sex- and age-matched healthy controls (HCs). Gene and protein expression of LOXL2 was investigated using real-time reverse-transcription PCR and immunohistochemistry. Mutation analysis was performed using the Sanger method. RESULTS We observed decreased LOXL2 mRNA expression in lesional skin of patients with MDE (0.48 ± 0.16) compared with healthy skin of the same patients (1.5 ± 0.51) and normal skin of HCs (1.9 ± 0.13). Compared with healthy patient skin (epidermis 2.38 ± 1.6, dermis 1.2 ± 1), LOXL2 protein expression in lesional patient skin (epidermis 1.1 ± 0.7, dermis 0.3 ± 0.45) was significantly decreased (P < 0.04 and P = 0.02, respectively). Mutation analysis of the entire LOXL2 gene could be performed for five patients, all of whom were found to have at least one mutation in the LOXL2 gene. Three of these had a mutation in the promoter region (c.967 G>C, c.1022 C>T, and c.1025 G>A, respectively), and one of them also had a mutation in the splice region of intron 11/exon 12 (IVS11-1 G>A). Of the remaining two patients, one had a mutation in exon 3 (T1391), and the other had a mutation in exon 11 (C663Y). CONCLUSIONS Our present data suggest that decreased elastin renewal due to LOXL2 mutations and consecutive reduced LOXL2 expression contribute to the pathogenesis of MDE.

Abstract
Argon plasma coagulation (APC) is an electrosurgical technique which can be used to ablate skin lesions with limited invasion depth into dermal tissue. Hence, APC might be well suited for the removal of epithelial tumours. However, there are no data on the effects of APC on human skin tissue. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the extent of epidermal and dermal damage after APC of human skin. We performed APC ex-vivo on 91 freshly resected human skin samples, which were obtained after reconstructive surgical closures in actinically damaged areas. Tissue effects were evaluated histologically and compared across different power settings. Using 15, 30, and 45 W, median (interquartile range; IQR) coagulation depths were 110.0 µm (91.7-130.0), 113.3 µm (85.8-135.0), and 130.0 µm (100.0-153.3.0), respectively. Median (IQR) thickness of necrosis zone was 30.0 µm (23.3-40.0) at 15 W, 26.7 µm (20.0-41.6) at 30 W, and 43.3 µm (30.8-57.5) at 45 W. The Kruskal-Wallis test showed significant differences between 15 and 30 W versus 45 W for coagulation depth (P = 0.0414), necrosis zone (P = 0.0017), and necrosis according to overlaying epidermal thickness (P = 0.0467). In summary, APC is a simple and controllable electrosurgical technique to remove epidermal tissue with limited penetration to the dermis. Thus, APC is particularly suited for the ablation of epithelial skin lesions and, therefore, may serve as possible treatment approach for intraepithelial neoplasms such as actinic keratosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Actinic keratosis (AK) severity is currently evaluated by subjective assessment of patients. OBJECTIVES To develop and perform an initial pilot validation of a new easy-to-use quantitative tool for assessing AK severity on the head. METHODS The actinic keratosis area and severity index (AKASI) for the head was developed based on a review of other severity scoring systems in dermatology, in particular the psoriasis area and severity index (PASI). Initial validation was performed by 13 physicians assessing AK severity in 18 AK patients and two controls using a physician global assessment (PGA) and AKASI. To determine an AKASI score, the head was divided into four regions (scalp, forehead, left/right cheek ear, chin and nose). In each region, the percentage of the area affected by AKs was estimated, and the severities of three clinical signs of AK were assessed: distribution, erythema and thickness. RESULTS There was a strong correlation between AKASI and PGA scores (Pearson correlation coefficient: 0.86). AKASI was able to discriminate between different PGA categories: mean (SD) AKASI increased from 2.88 (1.18) for 'light' to 5.33 (1.48) for 'moderate', 8.28 (1.89) for 'severe', and 8.73 (3.03) for 'very severe' PGA classification. The coefficient of variation for AKASI scores was low and relatively constant across all PGA categories. CONCLUSIONS Actinic keratosis area and severity index is proposed as a new quantitative tool for assessing AK severity on the head. It may be useful in the future evaluation of new AK treatments in clinical studies and the management of AK in daily practice.

Abstract
Studies into the complex interaction between an organism and changes to its biotic and abiotic environment are fundamental to understanding what regulates biodiversity. These investigations occur at many phylogenetic, temporal and spatial scales and within a variety of biological and geological disciplines but often in relative isolation. This issue focuses on what can be achieved when ecological mechanisms are integrated into analyses of deep-time biodiversity patterns through the union of fossil and extant data and methods. We expand upon this perspective to argue that, given its direct relevance to the current biodiversity crisis, greater integration is needed across biodiversity research. We focus on the need to understand scaling effects, how lower-level ecological and evolutionary processes scale up and vice versa, and the importance of incorporating functional biology. Placing function at the core of biodiversity research is fundamental, as it establishes how an organism interacts with its abiotic and biotic environment and it is functional diversity that ultimately determines important ecosystem processes. To achieve full integration, concerted and ongoing efforts are needed to build a united and interactive community of biodiversity researchers, with education and interdisciplinary training at its heart.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are several clinical and histological classification systems for grading actinic keratosis (AK) lesions. The Olsen clinical classification scheme grades AK lesions according to their thickness and degree of hyperkeratosis (grades 1-3). The Roewert-Huber histological classification system grades AK lesions based on the extent of epidermal atypical keratinocytes (AK I-III). OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a correlation between these clinical and histological AK classification schemes. METHODS One AK lesion from patients in three pivotal clinical studies and routine practice was assessed clinically and histologically. A match in grading was defined as Olsen grade 1 being classified histologically as AK I, Olsen grade 2 as AK II and Olsen grade 3 as AK III. RESULTS Of the 892 lesions included, 29.0% were classified as Olsen grade 1, 59.6% as Olsen grade 2 and 11.3% as Olsen grade 3; 19.2% were histologically classified as AK I, 69.6% as AK II and 11.2% as AK III. Only 480 lesions (53.8%) had a matching clinical and histological classification. Of these matches, most were 'Olsen grade 2 = AK II' (83.1%). The Spearman's rank correlation coefficient for clinical and histological classification was r = 0.0499 (P = 0.137). CONCLUSIONS Clinical classification of AK lesions using the system of Olsen does not accurately match histological classification of the same lesions using the system of Roewert-Huber. Consequently, it is not possible to draw conclusions about the histology of AK lesions from their clinical appearance. This finding reinforces the need to treat all AK lesions as well as field cancerization.

Abstract
Retinal topography maps are a widely used tool in vision science, neuroscience, and visual ecology, providing an informative visualization of the spatial distribution of cell densities across the retinal hemisphere. Here, we introduce Retina, an R package for computational mapping, inspection of topographic model fits, and generation of average maps. Functions in Retina take cell count data obtained from retinal wholemounts using stereology software. Accurate visualizations and comparisons between different eyes have been difficult in the past, because of deformation and incisions of retinal wholemounts. We account for these issues by incorporation of the R package Retistruct, which results in a retrodeformation of the wholemount into a hemispherical shape, similar to the original eyecup. The maps are generated by thin plate splines, after the data were transformed into a two-dimensional space with an azimuthal equidistant plot projection. Retina users can compute retinal topography maps independent of stereology software choice and assess model fits with a variety of diagnostic plots. Functionality of Retina also includes species average maps, an essential feature for interspecific analyses. The Retina package will facilitate rigorous comparative studies in visual ecology by providing a robust quantitative approach to generate retinal topography maps.

Abstract
Nocturnality is widespread among extant mammals and often considered the ancestral behavioural pattern for all mammals. However, mammals are nested within a larger clade, Synapsida, and non-mammalian synapsids comprise a rich phylogenetic, morphological and ecological diversity. Even though non-mammalian synapsids potentially could elucidate the early evolution of diel activity patterns and enrich the understanding of synapsid palaeobiology, data on their diel activity are currently unavailable. Using scleral ring and orbit dimensions, we demonstrate that nocturnal activity was not an innovation unique to mammals but a character that appeared much earlier in synapsid history, possibly several times independently. The 24 Carboniferous to Jurassic non-mammalian synapsid species in our sample featured eye morphologies consistent with all major diel activity patterns, with examples of nocturnality as old as the Late Carboniferous (ca 300 Ma). Carnivores such as Sphenacodon ferox and Dimetrodon milleri, but also the herbivorous cynodont Tritylodon longaevus were likely nocturnal, whereas most of the anomodont herbivores are reconstructed as diurnal. Recognizing the complexity of diel activity patterns in non-mammalian synapsids is an important step towards a more nuanced picture of the evolutionary history of behaviour in the synapsid clade.

Abstract
The heterochromatin protein 1 (HP1) gene family includes a set of paralogs in higher eukaryotes that serve fundamental roles in heterochromatin structure and maintenance, and other chromatin-related functions. At least 10 full and 16 partial HP1 genes exist among Drosophila species, with multiple gene gains, losses, and sub-functionalizations within this insect group. An important question is whether this diverse set of HP1 genes and their dynamic evolution represent the standard rule in eukaryotic groups. Here we have begun to address this question by bio-informatically identifying the HP1 family genes in representative species of the insect order Hymenoptera, which includes all ants, bees, wasps, and sawflies. Compared to Drosophila species, Hymenopterans have a much simpler set of HP1 genes, including one full and two partial HP1s. All 3 genes appear to have been present in the common ancestor of the Hymenopterans and they derive from a Drosophila HP1B-like gene. In ants, a partial HP1 gene containing only a chromoshadow domain harbors amino acid changes at highly conserved sites within the PxVxL recognition region, suggesting that this gene has undergone sub-functionalization. In the jewel wasp Nasonia vitripennis, the full HP1 and partial chromoshadow-only HP1 are expressed in both germ line and somatic tissues. However, the partial chromodomain-only HP1 is expressed exclusively in the ovary and testis, suggesting that it may have a specialized chromatin role during gametogenesis. Our findings demonstrate that the HP1 gene family is much simpler and evolutionarily less dynamic within the Hymenopterans compared to the much younger Drosophila group, a pattern that may reflect major differences in the range of chromatin-related functions present in these and perhaps other insect groups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have shown that patients with bullous pemphigoid (BP) are more likely to have neurological diseases (ND). OBJECTIVES To compare clinical findings in BP patients with and without ND and to investigate BP180 autoantibody binding in different neuronal tissues of mammalians. METHODS Our database was searched for clinical findings of in-patients with the definitive diagnosis of BP. Moreover, brain tissue of mammalians was treated with serum of BP patients with elevated BP180 autoantibodies using biochip mosaics. RESULTS Of 85/161 (52.8%) patients had a history of at least one ND (BP+ND). BP180 (P = 0.018), eosinophils (P = 0.043) and patients' accommodation in nursing homes (P < 0.0001) remained in the logistic regression model as significant independent predictors for the presence of ND in patients with BP. Subgroup analysis of community-dwelling BP patients revealed 25/93 (26.9%) patients with ND. In this population, the presence of ND also significantly correlated with BP180 (r = 0.26; P = 0.0003) and eosinophils (r = 0.19; P = 0.0087). In the animal model, no BP180-specific immunofluorescence could be detected. CONCLUSIONS Our data support results of previous studies detecting significantly increased frequency of ND in BP patients. We have shown that raised BP180 titres and blood eosinophils are independent predictors for the presence of ND in BP patients. However, our experimental data do not support previous results indicating that specific binding of BP180 antibodies in neuronal tissue plays a pathogenetic role in ND.

Abstract
Turbulent transport in magnetic fusion plasmas can be significantly suppressed by Reynolds-stress-induced zonal flows, allowing effective plasma confinement. We present experimental evidence of spatiotemporal correlation between small-scale turbulence-induced Reynolds stress and large-scale zonal flow production in the E×B driven hydrodynamic spectral condensation. We show that Reynolds stress is generated effectively by anisotropic vorticity structures possessing collective tilt angle. The maximum amplitude of the tilt, the Reynolds stress, and the mean zonal flow production coincide with the transition time of the velocity field, indicating a key role of turbulence-induced Reynolds stress in the condensation of the flow. The analysis of the energy transfer between turbulence and zonal flow shows coherent oscillations with π/2 phase delay, thus indicating a predator-prey-like interaction between zonal flow and turbulence.
