Talking About Hepatitis C: FAQs From Young Adults Who Inject Drugs

INTRODUCTION

Young adults who inject drugs and live in rural communities are at high risk for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Recent changes in HCV treatment must be communicated within these communities to improve access to care and reduce HCV transmission.

METHODS

Field workers in the ¡VÁLE! Hepatitis Treatment and Integrated Prevention Services study identified frequently asked questions (FAQs) posed by young-adult participants at high risk for HCV during screening and educational sessions. From 2016 to 2018, 183 young adults (44.3% women; 85.8% Latino/a) younger than 30 years who inject drugs and reside in Rio Arriba or Doña Ana counties in New Mexico were enrolled. The research team compiled deidentified questions during field enrollments.

RESULTS

FAQs were reviewed and categorized into four major domains, including risk/prevention, screening, treatment, and reinfection. FAQs were addressed by a team of medical and public health professionals, using the most current research and recommendations.

CONCLUSIONS

These FAQs address important gaps in HCV knowledge among young adults who are at high risk for infection. The FAQs also highlight the importance of risk reduction counseling provided by frontline public health providers as well as access to safe and effective HCV treatments for young adults who inject drugs.

Effects of erythromycin on the rabbit pleura: its potential role as a pleural sclerosant

Tetracycline (TCN) has been considered the agent of choice for pleurodesis in patients with symptomatic malignant pleural effusions and recurrent pneumothoraces. However, the intravenous form of TCN used for pleurodesis is no longer available. Erythromycin, like TCN, often produces irritation when administered intravenously. In view of these irritant properties, we tested the effect of erythromycin as a pleural sclerosant in rabbits as compared with TCN. Normal saline was used as a control. Adult rabbits weighing 2.5 to 3.0 kg underwent sterile placement of a silastic pleural tube in the right pleural space. Erythromycin (n = 17) or TCN (n = 6), each in doses of 35 mg/kg in 2 ml saline, was administered via the tube. Control animals (n = 6) received 2 ml saline. The chest tubes were left in place for removal of pleural fluid and to maintain lung expansion. Animals were killed 8 d after receiving the various treatments, and their pleural surfaces were examined grossly and histologically. Numerous adhesions were present between the visceral and parietal pleurae in all animals receiving erythromycin and TCN, but not in those receiving saline. On light microscopy, pleurae treated with erythromycin or TCN were histologically identical, showing inflammation, edema, and fibroblast proliferation in the submesothelial tissues. The saline-treated animals had a normal pleura. Because erythromycin produced pleural inflammation and adhesions within 8 d of treatment, we propose that it may have a potential role as a pleural sclerosant.

Small-cell carcinoma of prostate. Transient complete remission with chemotherapy

A patient with small-cell carcinoma of the prostate is described. The patient's clinical course and the tumor's pattern of metastases were similar to those seen in small-cell carcinoma of the lung. There was a complete, though brief, remission on chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin hydrochloride (Adriamycin), and vincristine.

Cytotoxic factor in the blood and plasma of animals during leptospirosis

Whole blood and plasma from animals in the acute stage of leptospirosis contained a toxic factor which produced a cytopathic effect on fibroblastic L cell monolayers. Firm adsorption of cytotoxic factor (CTF) to L cells occurred within 1 h. The highest titer of CTF in plasma was reached at 24 h and declined after 48 h after the inoculation of leptospires. Toxic effects were also obtained with intracerebral inoculation of mice with plasma containing CTF. Mice showed signs of motor instability and muscular spasms shortly after inoculation with CTF. Death usually occurred within 1 h.
