Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Genetic studies have raised the possibility of common bases for cognitive linguistic disorders such as speech sound disorder (SSD), reading disorder (RD) and language impairment (LI). Thus, some of the same genes may jointly influence cognitive components within and between these three disorders. We examined the plausibility of this theory in a sample of families ascertained on the basis of a child with SSD. METHODS Using the method of generalized estimating equations to solve a bivariate family predictive model we obtained measures of comorbidity and familial aggregation of SSD and LI. We then used two methods of multipoint model-free linkage analysis to evaluate SSD and LI psychometric test measures over a region previously implicated in linkage studies of RD, DYX8 region, 1p34-p36. RESULTS Bivariate phenotypic analyses show evidence of comorbidity and within family aggregation and coaggregation of SSD and LI. In addition, two regions on chromosome 1 show suggestive evidence of linkage. The first region was previously reported in dyslexia studies. Our maximum linkage signal in this region measured articulation (p = 0.0009) in SSD sibling pairs. The second region is characterized by processes involved in language production, with the maximum linkage signal measuring listening comprehension (p = 0.0019) using all sibling pairs. CONCLUSION We conclude that the DYX8 region could bear genes controlling pleiotropic effects on SSD, LI and RD.

Abstract
We report findings from two feasibility studies using automatic speech recognition (ASR) methods in childhood speech sound disorders. The studies evaluated and implemented the automation of two recently proposed diagnostic markers for suspected Apraxia of Speech (AOS) termed the Lexical Stress Ratio (LSR) and the Coefficient of Variation Ratio (CVR). The LSR is a weighted composite of amplitude area, frequency area , and duration in the stressed compared to the unstressed vowel as obtained from a speaker's productions of eight trochaic word forms. Composite weightings for the three stress parameters were determined from a principal components analysis. The CVR expresses the average normalized variability of durations of pause and speech events that were obtained from a conversational speech sample. We describe the automation procedures used to obtain LSR and CVR scores for four children with suspected AOS and report comparative findings. The LSR values obtained with ASR were within 1.2% to 6.7% of the LSR values obtained manually using Computerized Speech Lab (CSL). The CVR values obtained with ASR were within 0.7% to 2.7% of the CVR values obtained manually using Matlab. These results indicate the potential of ASR-based techniques to process these and other diagnostic markers of childhood speech sound disorders.

Abstract
The goal of the current study was to construct a reference database against which misarticulations of /s/ can be compared. Acoustic data for 26 typically speaking 9- to 15-year-olds were examined to resolve measurement issues in acoustic analyses, including alternative sampling points within the /s/ frication; the informativeness of linear versus Bark transformations of each of the 4 spectral moments of /s/ (Forrest, Weismer, Milenkovic, & Dougall, 1988); and measurement effects associated with linguistic context, age, and sex. Analysis of the reference data set indicates that acoustic characterization of /s/ is appropriately and optimally (a) obtained from the midpoint of /s/, (b) represented in linear scale, (c) reflected in summary statistics for the 1 st and 3rd spectral moments, (d) referenced to individual linguistic-phonetic contexts, (e) collapsed across the age range studied, and (f) described individually by sex.
