Abstract
BACKGROUND Neck pain and cervical spine disorders are widespread among military cockpit aircrew pilots and are often recognized as occupational stressors. AIMS This systematic review aimed to identify significant determinants for military pilot neck pain and cervical spine disorders determined through multivariable logistic regression studies. METHODS This systematic review was conducted according to the recommendations of the Statement of Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocols (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses [PRISMA]-P). The following databases were searched for literature: Medline and Embase. We included studies that studied neck pain, cervical spine disorders, and/or radiological abnormalities and associated exposures (adjusted odds ratios, ORadj) in military cockpit aircrew. The trustworthiness, relevance and results of the published papers were evaluated using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical checklist. RESULTS A total of three studies quantified the strength of the correlations between exposures and outcomes. Significant determinants/risk factors of neck pain, cervical spine disorders and radiological abnormalities were identified as age (ORadj: 1.092 [95% CI 1.054, 1.132]), fighter type (ORadj: 3.9 [95% CI 1.1, 13.9]) and absolute rotation angle of C2-7 (ARA) (ORadj: 0.91 [CI 0.85, 0.98]). The following variables were unable to demonstrate statistical significance: flying hours, body height and body mass index. CONCLUSIONS Military cockpit aircrew's frequent neck pain after a flight raises concerns about cervical spine disorders. Age, fighter type and ARA C2-7 are strong predictors of neck pain and cervical spine disorders. More research is needed on occupational determinants and risk factors for neck pain and cervical spine disorders in military cockpit aircrew.

Abstract
Background: A reduction in physical activity levels in older people is associated with declining quality of life and lower cardiorespiratory fitness levels associated with cardiovascular disease outcomes and mortality from all causes. Evidence supports the positive effect of community-based exercise (CEXE) programs on cardiovascular health and quality of life. This research aimed to examine the effects of a 3-month CEXE on health-related quality of life and cardiovascular risk factors in two Brazilian populations. Methods: Adults with an average age of 70.2 ± 5.4 years were recruited to engage in an individually designed group based CEXE program two to three times/week (aerobic exercise, circuit resistance training, and stretching exercises for 1 h each time). Once a week, competitions were held to improve socialization and collaboration capacity among group members. The CEXE group was compared with a sedentary group. Cardiovascular outcomes were blood pressure, triglycerides, body mass index, waist circumference, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, and glycemia. Health-related quality of life was evaluated using the Short Form-36. Results: Of the cardiovascular outcomes studied, the CEXE program significantly reduced systolic blood pressure [5.7 (95% CI 0.2 to 11.3), p < 0.05] and the triglyceride-HDL-C ratio [0.8 (95% CI 0.05 to 1.5), p < 0.05], whereas HDL-C was significantly increased [4.4 (95% CI 0.02 to 8.8), p < 0.05]. A significant improvement in the Short Form-36 subscales occurred in CEXE but not in the control group: physical functioning score [increase of 24.2 (95% CI 11.8 to 36.5) vs. -9.2 (95% CI -21.5 to 3.2), p < 0.001], physical role functioning score [increase of 35.4 (95% CI 12.8 to 58.0) vs. 16.7 (95% CI -6.0 to 39.3), p < 0.01], and general health score [increase of 23.7 (95% CI: 36.9. to 10.4) vs. 2.4 (95% CI -10.9 to 15.7), p < 0.001]. Conclusion: This study shows that in older adults, a 12-week physical activity program can significantly decrease cardiovascular risk and improve health-related quality of life measures. An important transferable sociocultural strategy of our exercise program was to establish social interactions during and outside the CEXE program.

Abstract
The predatory stink bugs are well known by their behavior, but the knowledge of the immature morphology and their natural history are scarce. Studies on predatory stink bugs are important to better understand their evolution and their use as biological controllers. Here, we describe the morphology of egg and the five nymphal instars of Oplomus catena (Drury, 1782), using optical and scanning electron microscopy. In general, O. catena immatures are very distinctive from other Asopinae species already studied. The egg is black, with short aero-micropylar processes and similar to those described for Stiretrus species. The nymphs can be diagnosed by the abdominal plates very large and bright blue. The color polymorphism of adults is fully illustrated, and four color patterns are proposed. The natural history of the species is described based on field and laboratory observations. The known prey of the species is reviewed and new preys are reported. The morphological and biological traits here described are discussed in order to better understand the biological role of predatory stink bugs.

Abstract
Background: Atherosclerotic carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) may be associated with alterations in the sensitivity of carotid baroreceptors. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between carotid IMT and the autonomic modulation of heart rate variability (HRV). Methods: A total of 101 subjects were enrolled in this prospective observational study. The carotid IMT was determined by duplex ultrasonography. The cardiac autonomic function was determined through HRV measures during the Deep Breathing Test. Linear regression models, adjusted for demographics, comorbidities, body mass index, waist-hip-ratio, and left ventricular ejection fraction were used to evaluate the association between HRV parameters and carotid IMT. Results: Participants had a mean age of 60.4 ± 13.4 years and an estimated 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk score (using the Pooled Cohort Equations) of 16.4 ± 17. The mean carotid media thickness was highest (0.90 ± 0.19 mm) in the first quartile of the standard deviation of all RR intervals (SDNN) (19.7 ± 5.1 ms) and progressively declined in each subsequent quartile to 0.82 ± 0.21 mm, 0.81 ± 0.16 mm, and 0.68 ± 0.19 in quartiles 2 (36.5 ± 5.9 ms), 3 (57.7 ± 6.2 ms) and 4 (100.9 ± 22.2 ms), respectively. In multivariable adjusted models, there was a statistical significant association between SDNN and carotid IMT (OR -0.002; 95%CI -0.003 to -0.001, p = 0.005). The same significant association was found between carotid IMT and other measures of HRV, including coefficient of variation of RR intervals (CV) and dispersion of points along the line of identity (SD2). Conclusions: In a cohort of individuals at increased cardiovascular risk, carotid IMT as a marker of subclinical atherosclerosis was associated with alterations of HRV indicating an impaired cardiac autonomic control, independently of other cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the most sensitive heart rate and blood pressure variability (HRV and BPV) parameters from a given set of well-known methods for the quantification of cardiovascular autonomic function after several autonomic blockades. Methods: Cardiovascular sympathetic and parasympathetic functions were studied in freely moving rats following peripheral muscarinic (methylatropine), β1-adrenergic (metoprolol), muscarinic + β1-adrenergic, α1-adrenergic (prazosin), and ganglionic (hexamethonium) blockades. Time domain, frequency domain and symbolic dynamics measures for each of HRV and BPV were classified through paired Wilcoxon test for all autonomic drugs separately. In order to select those variables that have a high relevance to, and stable influence on our target measurements (HRV, BPV) we used Fisher's Method to combine the p-value of multiple tests. Results: This analysis led to the following best set of cardiovascular variability parameters: The mean normal beat-to-beat-interval/value (HRV/BPV: meanNN), the coefficient of variation (cvNN = standard deviation over meanNN) and the root mean square differences of successive (RMSSD) of the time domain analysis. In frequency domain analysis the very-low-frequency (VLF) component was selected. From symbolic dynamics Shannon entropy of the word distribution (FWSHANNON) as well as POLVAR3, the non-linear parameter to detect intermittently decreased variability, showed the best ability to discriminate between the different autonomic blockades. Conclusion: Throughout a complex comparative analysis of HRV and BPV measures altered by a set of autonomic drugs, we identified the most sensitive set of informative cardiovascular variability indexes able to pick up the modifications imposed by the autonomic challenges. These indexes may help to increase our understanding of cardiovascular sympathetic and parasympathetic functions in translational studies of experimental diseases.

Abstract
Objectives: Surgical stress induces alterations on sympathovagal balance that can be determined through assessment of blood pressure variability. Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) is associated with postoperative respiratory depression. In this study we aimed at investigating ICU blood pressure variability and other perioperative parameters that could predict the nadir of postoperative respiratory function impairment. Methods: This prospective observational study evaluated 44 coronary artery disease patients subjected to coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). At the ICU, mean arterial pressure (MAP) was monitored every 30 min for 3 days. MAP variability was evaluated through: standard deviation (SD), coefficient of variation (CV), variation independent of mean (VIM), and average successive variability (ASV). Respiratory function was assessed through maximal inspiratory (MIP) and expiratory (MEP) pressures and peak expiratory flow (PEF) determined 1 day before surgery and on the postoperative days 3rd to 7th. Intraoperative parameters (volume of cardioplegia, CPB duration, aortic cross-clamp time, number of grafts) were also monitored. Results: Since, we aimed at studying patients without confounding effects of postoperative complications on respiratory function, we had enrolled a cohort of low risk EuroSCORE (European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation) with < 2. Respiratory parameters MIP, MEP, and PEF were significantly depressed for 4–5 days postoperatively. Of all MAP variability parameters, the ASV had a significant good positive Spearman correlation (rho coefficients ranging from 0.45 to 0.65, p < 0.01) with the 3-day nadir of PEF after cardiac surgery. Also, CV and VIM of MAP were significantly associated with nadir days of MEP and PEF. None of the intraoperative parameters had any correlation with the postoperative respiratory depression. Conclusions: Variability parameters ASV, CV, and VIM of the MAP monitored at ICU may have predictive value for the depression of respiratory function after cardiac surgery as determined by peak expiratory flow and maximal expiratory pressure. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Asthma is a serious, sometimes fatal condition, in which attacks vary in severity, potentially requiring emergency medical services (EMS) ambulance treatment. A portion of asthma attacks requiring EMS ambulance treatment may be prevented with improved education and access to care. The aim of this study was to identify areas of the city with high rates of utilization of EMS ambulance for treatment, and the demographics, socio-economic status, and time of day associated with these rates, to better target future interventions to prevent emergencies and reduce cost. STUDY DESIGN A cross-sectional study was conducted on individuals in Houston, TX (USA) requiring ambulance treatment for asthma attacks from 2004 to 2011. METHODS 12,155 EMS ambulance-treated asthma attack cases were linked to census tracts. High rate treatment areas were identified with geospatial mapping. Census tract demographic characteristics of these high rate areas were compared with the remainder of the city using logistic regression. The association between case level demographics and the time of day of asthma attack within the high rate area was also assessed with logistic regression. RESULTS EMS ambulance-treated high rate areas were identified and found to have a utilization incidence rate over six times higher per 100,000 people than the remainder of the city. There is an increased risk of location in this high rate area with a census tract level increase of percent of population: earning less than $10,000 yearly income (RR 1.21, 1.16-1.26), which is black (RR 1.08, 1.07-1.10), which is female (RR 1.34, 1.20-1.49) and have obtained less than a high school degree (RR 1.02, 1.01-1.03). Within the high rate area, case level data indicates an increased risk of requiring an ambulance after normal doctor office hours for men compared with women (RR 1.13, 1.03-1.22), for black compared with Hispanic ethnicity (RR 1.31, 1.08-1.59), or for adults (less than 41 and greater than 60) compared with children. CONCLUSIONS Interventions to prevent asthma emergencies should be targeted in the high rate area and towards groups identified most at risk. Consideration should be given to improved access to care after normal doctor office hours in these locations. While ambulance treatment reflects the most urgent care needs, these interventions are also expected to reduce the need for emergency room visits.

Abstract
The Atlantic Forest (AF) is considered the most fragmented and endangered Brazilian biome. The diversity of phytophagous insects increases after disturbances in forests, and it was hypothesized the Pentatomidae can furnish ecologically reliable information in terms of diversity in response to the changes occurring in AF. Our aim was to quantify the response of assemblages of Pentatomoidea to gradient of human disturbance in two vegetation types of the AF-dense ombrophilous forest (DOF) and mixed ombrophilous forest (MOF). Twelve transects were grouped into environmental classes, namely open, intermediate, and closed. Overall, 1,017 pentatomoids were sampled, representing 64 species. The open environment was more abundant than closed environment, though it is expected that Pentatomoidea respond with increasing abundance when under light or moderate disturbance. The MOF was more abundant than DOF, and the composition differed between both of them. Given the differences in composition between MOF and DOF, abiotic variables are important factors acting as environmental filters for Pentatomoidea, not just directly on the insects, but probably also on the nutritional support of their host plants.

Abstract
Multiple studies indicate that endothelin antagonism may have a protective effect for chronic kidney disease. Despite that, clinical studies using avosentan have been halted due to adverse effects including fluid overload. Therefore, we aimed at investigating whether avosentan may have protective effects against hypertensive nephropathy at doses below those inducing fluid-retention. We used double transgenic rats (dTGR), overexpressing both the human renin and angiotensinogen gene, which develop malignant hypertension. Effects of avosentan alone or in combination with low-dose of valsartan (angiotensin AT1 receptor antagonist) on end-organ damage were studied. Avosentan induced a decrease of diuresis (18.3%) with a consequent decrease in hematocrit (8.3%) only at the highest dose investigated (100mg/kg). Treatment with the combination of avosentan and valsartan (10 and 0.1mg/kg, once daily by gavage, respectively) decreased albuminuria to a greater extent than each compound given alone (avosentan: 19.6mg/24h; valsartan: 12.9mg/24h; avosentan+valsartan: 1.7mg/24h, data are median values). Histological severity score also showed a drastic reduction of kidney damage. Furthermore, avosentan alone or in combination therapy dramatically decreased mortality compared to the 100% in untreated animals. These data support a therapeutic effect of avosentan at doses below those inducing fluid overload.

Abstract
Heart rate and blood pressure are the most important vital signs in diagnosing disease. Both heart rate and blood pressure are characterized by a high degree of short term variability from moment to moment, medium term over the normal day and night as well as in the very long term over months to years. The study of new mathematical algorithms to evaluate the variability of these cardiovascular parameters has a high potential in the development of new methods for early detection of cardiovascular disease, to establish differential diagnosis with possible therapeutic consequences. The autonomic nervous system is a major player in the general adaptive reaction to stress and disease. The quantitative prediction of the autonomic interactions in multiple control loops pathways of cardiovascular system is directly applicable to clinical situations. Exploration of new multimodal analytical techniques for the variability of cardiovascular system may detect new approaches for deterministic parameter identification. A multimodal analysis of cardiovascular signals can be studied by evaluating their amplitudes, phases, time domain patterns, and sensitivity to imposed stimuli, i.e., drugs blocking the autonomic system. The causal effects, gains, and dynamic relationships may be studied through dynamical fuzzy logic models, such as the discrete-time model and discrete-event model. We expect an increase in accuracy of modeling and a better estimation of the heart rate and blood pressure time series, which could be of benefit for intelligent patient monitoring. We foresee that identifying quantitative mathematical biomarkers for autonomic nervous system will allow individual therapy adjustments to aim at the most favorable sympathetic-parasympathetic balance.

Abstract
Background:
Atherosclerotic intima-media thickening (IMT) of carotid or subclavian artery may be associated with alterations in the sensitivity of carotid and subclavian baroreceptors. This is why we aimed at investigating if IMT is associated with alterations in the autonomic modulation of heart rate variability (HRV).
Methods:
This was a cross-sectional study with 30 subjects. The atherosclerotic artery IMT was determined by B-mode and duplex ultrasonography. HRV was evaluated through linear (low frequency [LF, ms2], high frequency [HF, ms2], standard deviation (SD) of normal R-R wave intervals [SDNN], square root of the mean of the sum of the squares of differences between adjacent normal R wave intervals [RMSSD]) and nonlinear Poincaré analysis (SD of the points perpendicular to the line-of-identity [SD1, ms]; SD along the line-of-identity [SD2, ms]).
Results:
A significant negative linear correlation was identified between the IMT of common carotid artery and the HRV indexes that reflects baroreflex and the fluctuations of autonomic tone: LF, Spearman's r = -0.52, 95% CI: -0.75 to -0.19, P = 0.003; SDNN, Spearman's r = -0.57, 95% CI: -0.78 to -0.25, P = 0.001; SD2, Spearman's r = -0.59, 95% CI: -0.79 to -0.28, P = 0.0006. Similar strong negative correlations were found for subclavian IMT. In contrast, there was no relationship between IMT and the HRV indexes related to autonomic tone (HF, LF/HF, RMSSD, SD1, SD1/SD2). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) sensitivities/specificities/area under curve of SD2 for predicting carotid and subclavian artery IMT were 0.75/0.83/0.81 and 0.70/0.69/0.70, respectively (cutoff values: <32.8 and <42.5, respectively). Identification of atherosclerotic plaque in subclavian artery (IMT > 1.5 mm) was associated with a drastic reduction of SD2 (25.9 [24.3-40.5] vs. 50.2 [38.1-68.7]; data are median and interquartile range values, p = 0.0009), LF (65% lower, p = 0.005) and SDNN (43% lower, p = 0.001).
Conclusions:
Our data demonstrate that the atherosclerotic carotid and subclavian IMT are associated with an impairment of cardiac autonomic control. The SD2 index of Poincaré plot may be a functional biomarker for subjects at risk for carotid disease and an indicator for ultrasound evaluation.

Abstract
Objective.
Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) is associated with postoperative respiratory depression. The primary endpoint of this study was the determination whether the blood pressure variability during the intensive care unit (ICU) is correlated with the nadir of postoperative respiratory function impairment.
Methods.
This prospective study evaluated 44 patients subjected to CABG with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Mean arterial pressure (MAP) was monitored every 30 min for 3 days at the ICU. MAP variability was evaluated through: standard deviation (SD), coefficient of variation (CV), variation independent of mean (VIM), average successive variability (ASV) and SD of ASV. Respiratory function was assessed through maximal inspiratory (MIP) and expiratory (MEP) pressures and expiratory peak flow rate (EPFR) determined 1 day before surgery and on the postoperative days 3rd to 7th.
Results.
Respiratory parameters MIP, MEP and EPFR were significantly depressed postoperatively for 4, 4 and 5 days respectively. Patient adherence to EPFR monitoring was higher than for MIP and MEP. None of the perioperative parameters (volume of cardioplegia, CPB duration, aortic cross-clamp time, number of grafts) had any correlation with the postoperative respiratory depression. Of all MAP variability parameters, the ASV and SD of ASV had a significant good positive Spearman correlation (rho coefficients ranging from 0.45 to 0.65, p<0.01) with the nadir depression of EPFR for 5 days after cardiac surgery.
Conclusion.
Variability parameters ASV and SD of ASV of the MAP monitored at ICU may have predictive value for the depression of respiratory function after cardiac surgery as determined by EPFR.

Abstract
Characters of immatures are potentially useful in identifying taxa, but few immatures of Pentatomidae were described. The objectives here are to describe the egg and five nymphal instars of Caonabo pseudoscylax (Bergroth) under light and scanning electron microscopy. Adults, eggs, and nymphs were collected on Homolepsis glutinosa during 2008, in Criciúma (Santa Catarina, Brazil). The egg of C. pseudoscylax is subcylindrical, chorion reddish brown, slightly translucent, and with granulate surface. Aero-micropylar processes translucent, spongy, and strongly clavate. Nymphs without punctures, spiracles placed near the lateral abdominal margin. The dorsal abdominal gland has rounded ostioles bearing cuticular valve; spout peritreme smooth, directed anteriorly; evaporatorium network-shaped; and microsculpture poorly ornamented. Humeral angles of the pronotum were produced from fourth instar. The almost marginal placement of abdominal spiracles may diagnose the nymphs of C. pseudoscylax from first instar to adulthood.

Abstract
Pineal gland and its hormone melatonin have been implicated in modulation of cardiovascular system. We aimed at studying the effects of melatonin on baroreflex sensitivity and the role of area postrema, as a component modulator of baroreflex arch. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) were recorded in conscious freely moving rats. Baroreceptor reflex sensitivity was assessed by determining the HR responses to ramped infusions of phenylephrine (PE) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP)-induced MAP changes. Melatonin bolus (0.11 mg/kg) immediately followed by its continuous infusion (0.43 × 10(-9) mol/L at a rate of 0.65 mL/h for 30 min) in healthy normotensive rats produced a downward shift of baroreceptor reflex control with a substantial inhibition of reflex tachycardia (-32%) and potentiation of reflex bradycardia (+20%). Ablation of area postrema (APX group) induced a sustained decrease of MAP (101 ± 3 vs. 116 ± 3 mmHg, P < 0.05 in comparison with sham rats, respectively). The melatonin-induced alterations of baroreflex function observed in the sham group were abolished in the APX group. We conclude that circulating melatonin can modulate baroreceptor reflex control of HR, thus resetting it toward lower HR values. The modulatory effects of melatonin may be mediated via melatonin receptors in the area postrema, located outside the blood-brain barrier.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence indicates that various biological and neuroendocrine circadian rhythms may be disrupted in cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. These circadian alterations may contribute to the progression of disease. Our studies direct to an important role of angiotensin II and melatonin in the modulation of circadian rhythms. The brain renin-angiotensin system (RAS) may modulate melatonin synthesis, a hormone with well-established roles in regulating circadian rhythms. Angiotensin production in the central nervous system may not only influence hypertension but also appears to affect the circadian rhythm of blood pressure. Drugs acting on RAS have been proven effective in the treatment of cardiovascular and metabolic disorders including hypertension and diabetes mellitus (DM). On the other hand, since melatonin is capable of ameliorating metabolic abnormalities in DM and insulin resistance, the beneficial effects of RAS blockade could be improved through combined RAS blocker and melatonin therapy. Contemporary research is evidencing the existence of specific clock genes forming central and peripheral clocks governing circadian rhythms. Further research on the interaction between these two neurohormones and the clock genes governing circadian clocks may progress our understanding on the pathophysiology of disease with possible impact on chronotherapeutic strategies.

Abstract

Additions to the descriptions of Chinavia difficilis (Stål), Chinavia geniculata (Dallas), and Chinavia obstinata (Stål) are provided in here, and corrections are proposed for the pictorial key by Schwertner & Grazia for the Brazilian species of Chinavia. New distribution records are also given for the first two species.

Abstract
The ancient renin-angiotensin system (RAS) was discovered more than a hundred years ago by identifying the rate-limiting enzyme of the system and its relevance to blood pressure regulation. Forty years ago, Detlev Ganten et al. postulated the existence of a tissue RAS. In these forty years, he kept developing the knowledge of these systems either directly or by training or attracting the interest of many researchers. Through the present review, we try to highlight recent advancements that originated from the postulation of local brain RAS. Although a large amount of knowledge accumulated, this system continues to intrigue and stimulate the interest and imagination of many researchers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The association between torcetrapib and its off-target effects on blood pressure suggested a possible class-specific effect. The effects of dalcetrapib (RO4607381/JTT-705) and torcetrapib on haemodynamics and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) were therefore assessed in a rat model. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Arterial pressure (AP) and heart rate were measured by telemetry in normotensive and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) receiving torcetrapib 10, 40 or 80 mg kg(-1) day(-1); dalcetrapib 100, 300 or 500 mg(-1) kg day(-1); or vehicle (placebo) for 5 days. Expression of RAAS genes in adrenal gland, kidney, aorta and lung from normotensive rats following 5 days' treatment with torcetrapib 40 mg kg(-1) day(-1), dalcetrapib 500 mg kg(-1) day(-1) or vehicle was measured by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. KEY RESULTS Torcetrapib transiently increased mean AP in normotensive rats (+3.7 +/- 0.1 mmHg), whereas treatment in SHR resulted in a dose-dependent and sustained increase [+6.5 +/- 0.6 mmHg with 40 mg kg(-1) day(-1) at day 1 (P < 0.05 versus placebo)], which lasted over the treatment period. No changes in AP or heart rate were observed with dalcetrapib. Torcetrapib, but not dalcetrapib, increased RAAS-related mRNAs in adrenal glands and aortas. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS In contrast to torcetrapib, dalcetrapib did not increase blood pressure or RAAS-related gene expression in rats, suggesting that the off-target effects of torcetrapib are not a common feature of all compounds acting on cholesteryl ester transfer protein.

Abstract
Rat models of hypertension, eg, spontaneously hypertensive stroke-prone rats (SHRSP), display reduced angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) mRNA and protein expression compared with control animals. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of ACE2 in the pathogenesis of hypertension in these models. Therefore, we generated transgenic rats on a SHRSP genetic background expressing the human ACE2 in vascular smooth muscle cells by the use of the SM22 promoter, called SHRSP-ACE2. In these transgenic rats vascular smooth muscle expression of human ACE2 was confirmed by RNase protection, real-time RT-PCR, and ACE2 activity assays. Transgene expression leads to significantly increased circulating levels of angiotensin-(1-7), a prominent product of ACE2. Mean arterial blood pressure was reduced in SHRSP-ACE2 compared to SHRSP rats, and the vasoconstrictive response to intraarterial administration of angiotensin II was attenuated. The latter effect was abolished by previous administration of an ACE2 inhibitor. To evaluate the endothelial function in vivo, endothelium-dependent and endothelium-independent agents such as acetylcholine and sodium nitroprusside, respectively, were applied to the descending thoracic aorta and blood pressure was monitored. Endothelial function turned out to be significantly improved in SHRSP-ACE2 rats compared to SHRSP. These data demonstrate that vascular ACE2 overexpression in SHRSP reduces hypertension probably by locally degrading angiotensin II and improving endothelial function. Thus, activation of the ACE2/angiotensin-(1-7) axis may be a novel therapeutic strategy in hypertension.

Abstract
Two kinin receptors have been described, the inducible B(1) and the constitutive B(2). B(1) receptors are important in cardiovascular homeostasis and inflammation. To further clarify their vascular function, we have generated transgenic rats (TGR(Tie2B(1))) overexpressing the B(1) receptor exclusively in the endothelium. Endothelial cell-specific expression was confirmed by B(1)-agonist-induced relaxation of isolated aorta, which was abolished by endothelial denudation of the vessel. This vasodilatation was mediated by nitric oxide (NO) and K(+) channels. TGR(Tie2B(1)) rats were normotensive but, in contrast to controls, reacted with a marked fall in blood pressure and increased vascular permeability after intravenous injection of a B(1) agonist. After lipopolysaccharide treatment, they present a more pronounced hypotensive response and marked bradycardia associated with increased mortality when compared to non-transgenic control animals. Thus, the transgenic rats overexpressing kinin B(1) receptors exclusively in the endothelium generated in this study support an important role of this receptor in the vasculature during the pathogenesis of endotoxic shock.

Abstract
The energetics of alpha-helix formation are fairly well understood and the helix content of a given amino acid sequence can be calculated with reasonable accuracy from helix-coil transition theories that assign to the different residues specific effects on helix stability. In internal helical positions, alanine is regarded as the most stabilizing residue, whereas glycine, after proline, is the more destabilizing. The difference in stabilization afforded by alanine and glycine has been explained by invoking various physical reasons, including the hydrophobic effect and the entropy of folding. Herein, the contribution of these two effects and that of hydrophilic area burial is evaluated by analyzing Ala and Gly mutants implemented in three helices of apoflavodoxin. These data, combined with available data for similar mutations in other proteins (22 Ala/Gly mutations in alpha-helices have been considered), allow estimation of the difference in backbone entropy between alanine and glycine and evaluation of its contribution and that of apolar and polar area burial to the helical stabilization typically associated to Gly-->Ala substitutions. Alanine consistently stabilizes the helical conformation relative to glycine because it buries more apolar area upon folding and because its backbone entropy is lower. However, the relative contribution of polar area burial (which is shown to be destabilizing) and of backbone entropy critically depends on the approximation used to model the structure of the denatured state. In this respect, the excised-peptide model of the unfolded state, proposed by Creamer and coworkers (1995), predicts a major contribution of polar area burial, which is in good agreement with recent quantitations of the relative enthalpic contribution of Ala and Gly residues to alpha-helix formation.

Abstract
Flavodoxins are useful models to investigate protein/cofactor interactions. The binding energy of the apoflavodoxin-FMN complex is high and therefore the holoflavodoxin is expected to be more stable than the apoprotein. This expectation has been challenged by reports on the stability of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans flavodoxin indicating that FMN binds to the unfolded polypeptide with similar affinity as to the native state, thus causing no net effect on protein stability. In previous work, we have analyzed in detail the stability of the apoflavodoxin from Anabaena PCC 7119 and the energetics of its functional complex with FMN. Here, we use the Anabaena holoprotein to directly investigate the contribution of the bound cofactor to protein stability through a detailed analysis of the chemical and thermal denaturation equilibria. Our data clearly shows that FMN binding largely stabilizes the protein towards both chemical and thermal denaturation, and that the stabilization observed at 25 degrees C in low ionic strength conditions is precisely the one expected if full release of the cofactor takes place upon flavodoxin unfolding. On the other hand, the binding of FMN to the native polypeptide is shown to simplify the thermal unfolding so that, while apoflavodoxin follows a three-state mechanism, the holoprotein unfolds in a two-state fashion. Comparison of the X-ray structure of native apoflavodoxin with the phi-structure of the thermal intermediate indicates that the increase in cooperativity driven by the cofactor originates in its preferential binding to the native state, which is a consequence of the disorganization in the intermediate of the FMN binding loops and of an adjacent longer loop.

Abstract
We have previously shown that a permanent deficiency in the brain renin-angiotensin system (RAS) may increase the sensitivity of the baroreflex control of heart rate. In this study we aimed at studying the involvement of the brain RAS in the cardiac reactivity to the beta-adrenoceptor (beta-AR) agonist isoproterenol (Iso). Transgenic rats with low brain angiotensinogen (TGR) were used. In isolated hearts, Iso induced a significantly greater increase in left ventricular (LV) pressure and maximal contraction (+dP/dt(max)) in the TGR than in the Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. LV hypertrophy induced by Iso treatment was significantly higher in TGR than in SD rats (in g LV wt/100 g body wt, 0.28 +/- 0.004 vs. 0.24 +/- 0.004, respectively). The greater LV hypertrophy in TGR rats was associated with more pronounced downregulation of beta-AR and upregulation of LV beta-AR kinase-1 mRNA levels compared with those in SD rats. The decrease in the heart rate (HR) induced by the beta-AR antagonist metoprolol in conscious rats was significantly attenuated in TGR compared with SD rats (-9.9 +/- 1.7% vs. -18.1 +/- 1.5%), whereas the effect of parasympathetic blockade by atropine on HR was similar in both strains. These results indicate that TGR are more sensitive to beta-AR agonist-induced cardiac inotropic response and hypertrophy, possibly due to chronically low sympathetic outflow directed to the heart.

Abstract
In this study, we aimed to investigate the adaptation of blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), and locomotor activity (LA) circadian rhythms to light cycle shift in transgenic rats with a deficit in brain angiotensin [TGR(ASrAOGEN)]. BP, HR, and LA were measured by telemetry. After baseline recordings (bLD), the light cycle was inverted by prolonging the light by 12 h and thereafter the dark period by 12 h, resulting in inverted dark-light (DL) or light-dark (LD) cycles. Toward that end, a 24-h dark was maintained for 14 days (free-running conditions). When light cycle was changed from bLD to DL, the acrophases (peak time of curve fitting) of BP, HR, and LA shifted to the new dark period in both SD and TGR(ASrAOGEN) rats. However, the readjustment of the BP and HR acrophases in TGR(ASrAOGEN) rats occurred significantly slower than SD rats. The LA acrophases changed similarly in both strains. When light cycle was changed from DL to LD by prolonging the dark period by 12 h, the reentrainment of BP and LA occurred faster than the previous shift in both strains. The readjustment of the BP and HR acrophases in TGR(ASrAOGEN) rats occurred significantly slower than SD rats. In free-running conditions, the circadian rhythms of the investigated parameters adapted in TGR(ASrAOGEN) and SD rats in a similar manner. These results demonstrate that the brain RAS plays an important role in mediating the effects of light cycle shifts on the circadian variation of BP and HR. The adaptive behavior of cardiovascular circadian rhythms depends on the initial direction of light-dark changes.

Abstract
The apoflavodoxin fragment comprising residues 1-149 that can be obtained by chemical cleavage of the C-terminal alpha-helix of the full-length protein is known to populate a molten globule conformation that displays a cooperative behaviour and experiences two-state urea and thermal denaturation. Here, we have used a recombinant form of this fragment to investigate molten globule energetics and to derive structural information by equilibrium Phi-analysis. We have characterized 15 mutant fragments designed to probe the persistence of native interactions in the molten globule and compared their conformational stability to that of the equivalent full-length apoflavodoxin mutants. According to our data, most of the mutations analysed modify the stability of the molten globule fragment following the trend observed when the same mutations are implemented in the full-length protein. However, the changes in stability observed in the molten globule are much smaller and the Phi-values calculated are (with a single exception) below 0.4. This is consistent with an overall and significant debilitation of the native structure. Nevertheless, the fact that the molten globule fragment can be stabilised using as a guide the native structure of the full-length protein (by increasing helix propensity, optimising charge interactions and filling small cavities) suggests that the overall structure of the molten globule is still quite close to native, in spite of the lowered stability observed.

Abstract
The advance of genetic technologies to permit tissue-specific targeted gene manipulation allowed the development of transgenic models with alterations of the renin-angiotensin (RAS) solely in the brain. We have used such methodology to develop a transgenic rat with a brain specific alteration of the RAS [TGR(ASrAOGEN)], in order to elucidate a causative role for the brain RAS and its relevance in different pathophysiological processes. The TGR(ASrAOGEN) rats have decreased levels of angiotensinogen (AOGEN) throughout the brain because of an antisense inhibition of the astroglial AOGEN synthesis. In this review we aimed at summarizing the experience obtained from utilizing the TGR(ASrAOGEN) rat model to study the brain RAS and present novel results providing evidence for the involvement of this system in stress-induced renin release.

Abstract
The consequences of permanent alteration to the brain renin-angiotensin system (RAS) on central vasopressinergic system was studied in transgenic rats with low brain angiotensinogen [TGR(ASrAOGEN)]. Levels of vasopressin (AVP) and V1a receptor mRNAs were measured by ribonuclease protection assay (RPA) and AVP by radioimmunoassay (RIA). AVP (100 pmol/50 nl) was microinjected into the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) of urethane-anesthetized TGR(ASrAOGEN) and Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats and the mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) baroreflex induced by phenylephrine were evaluated. AVP but not its mRNA levels were significantly lower in the hypothalamus and hypophysis of TGR(ASrAOGEN) rats. Brainstem V1a mRNA levels were significantly higher in TGR(ASrAOGEN) in comparison to SD rats (5.2+/-0.4% vs. 3.3+/-0.2% of beta-actin mRNA, P<0.05). In contrast, the hypothalamic V1a mRNA levels in TGR(ASrAOGEN) were not different from those found in SD rats. AVP microinjections induced a greater decrease in MAP in TGR(ASrAOGEN) in comparison with SD rats (-19.9+/-5.2 vs. -7.5+/-0.7 mm Hg, P<0.01). The significantly higher baroreflex sensitivity observed in TGR compared to that of SD rats was normalized after AVP microinjection. The increased brainstem V1a mRNA levels and sensitivity to AVP in TGR(ASrAOGEN) rats indicates a functional upregulation of AVP receptors in the NTS. The fact that the hypothalamic V1a mRNA levels are not altered indicates that these receptors are differentially regulated in different brain regions. This study demonstrates that a permanent deficit in brain angiotensinogen synthesis can alter the functionality of central vasopressinergic system.

Abstract
We have previously shown that flutamide (specific antagonist of the androgen receptor) has antihypertensive effects. In the present study we examined the mechanisms of flutamide action in the vasculature. The vascular effects of flutamide were assayed in aortae isolated from male or female Sprague-Dawley rats and from rats or mice lacking a functional androgen receptor ( tfm, testicular feminization mutation). The effect of flutamide on coronary flow was tested in isolated hearts. In addition, male hypertensive rats with tfm mutation were treated with flutamide, and blood pressure was monitored. Flutamide induced a relaxation of rat aortae from all the strains used (maximum relaxation at 10 microM: 51.3+/-5.2% of phenylephrine contraction) and increased the coronary flow. The aortic relaxation to flutamide was abolished by endothelium removal, or by inhibition of nitric oxide synthase, guanylyl cyclase, and tyrosine kinase but not by calmodulin inhibition. Flutamide treatment attenuated the development of hypertension in mouse renin transgenic rats with the tfm mutation. Flutamide produces direct vasodilation by inducing release of NO from the endothelium and causes subsequent activation of soluble guanylyl cyclase in an active androgen receptor independent manner. This response may contribute to the observed antihypertensive actions of flutamide.

Abstract
We have characterized the meiosis of Olla v-nigrum by standard analysis, performed a NOR study using NOR banding, FISH of rDNA genes and sequential FISH/AgNOR analysis, and adapted the FISH methodology to Coccinellidae. The chromosome number determined at metaphase I was n = 9 + Xyp. At zygotene it was possible to identify the sex vesicle which presented a deeply stained heteropycnotic block. Chromosome X is much larger than the y and the two combine, forming a "parachute" in metaphase I. FISH analysis using a probe of rDNA genes 18S, 28S and 5.8S of D. melanogaster was used to map the genes in the sex vesicle. The NOR band showed high gene activity in this region. These results were confirmed using sequential FISH/Ag NOR analysis. The data obtained for Olla v-nigrum agree with the classical hypothesis raised to explain the type of sex chromosome association in a parachute format (Xyp) as being due to the presence of nucleolar material. The chromosome number and parachute configuration during metaphase I in this species agree with the basic karyotype of most Coleopterans. The major adaptation of the FISH method was the simultaneous denaturation and hybridization that permitted preservation of chromosome morphology, an essential factor when the chromosomes are small.

Abstract
Melipona quadrifasciata is an important pollinator agent in several regions of Brazil. Data concerning the genetics of this species are scarce in the literature. In this work we used the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique to determine the degree of polymorphism and the inheritance pattern of these molecular markers in this species. Our ultimate goal is to establish tools to be used in the study of the genomic organization of M. quadrifasciata. Genomic DNA from progenies F(1) and BC(1) were assayed with 79 different primers, yielding an average of 6.67 bands and 1.68 polymorphisms per primer. Three types of polymorphisms were detected: band presence/absence, band intensity, and fragment-length polymorphisms. Most of the observed polymorphisms were band presence/absence, typical of RAPD-dominant markers. The number of observed polymorphisms and their segregation in accordance with a Mendelian proportion confirm the importance of this technique for genome analysis of species like M. quadrifasciata that are poorly studied at the genetic level.

Abstract
Cytochrome c(6) (Cyt) from the thermophilic cyanobacterium Phormidium laminosum has been purified and characterized. It is a mildly acidic protein, with physicochemical properties very similar to those of plastocyanin (Pc). This is in agreement with the functional interchangeability of the two metalloproteins as electron donors to Photosystem I (PS I). The kinetic analyses of the interaction of Pc and Cyt with Photosystem I show that both metalloproteins reduce PS I with similar efficiencies, according to an oriented collisional kinetic model involving repulsive electrostatic interactions. The thermostability study of the Phormidium Pc/PS I system compared with those from mesophilic cyanobacteria (Synechocystis, Anabaena and Pseudanabaena) reveals that Pc is the partner limiting the thermostability of the Phormidium couple. The cross-reactions between Pc and PS I from different organisms demonstrate not only that Phormidium Pc enhances the stability of the Pc/PS I system using PS I from mesophilic cyanobacteria, but also that Phormidium PS I possesses a higher thermostability than the other photosystems.

Abstract
The karyotype of Chelonus insularis (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Cheloninae) is described. The males show an haploid number of seven chromosomes and the females a diploid number of fourteen chromosomes, confirming haplo-diploid sex determination. Comparisons of these results with karyotypes of other species of the same family were done and a possible mechanism involved in the karyotype evolution of this species is discussed.

Abstract
Karyotypic analyses of 366 specimens of the solitary wasp Trypoxylon (Trypargilum) albitarse collected from ten populations in the municipalities of Viçosa and Porto Firme (Minas Gerais, Southeastern Brazil), revealed the presence of two morphological types of supernumerary (B) chromosomes. C-banding and fluorochrome banding suggest that the B chromosomes of T. albitarse may have originated from heterochromatin breaks within the standard (A) chromosome complement.

Abstract
We studied flight distance and directionality of bee pollinators on the tropical shrub weed Triumfetta semitriloba Jacq. (Tiliaceae), addressing (1) within- and between-plant movement pattern; (2) distances flown between plants; (3) flight directionality. Flowering plants were distributed in well-delimited clumps, in each of two pasture areas (A1 and A2) and one area of forest gap (A3), in Viçosa, southeastern Brazil. Five solitary bee species, Augochlorella michaelis, Augochloropsis cupreola, Pseudocentron paulistana, Ceratinula sp., Melissodes sexcincta, and two social bee, Plebeia droryana, P. cf. nigriceps were observed. All species moved mainly to the nearest flower on the same individual plant and, in between-plant movements, to the first or second nearest neighbor. All species moved non-randomly, presenting a flight directionality in departures (maintenance of flight direction), but with a high frequency of turn angles. It is suggested that this foraging behavior pattern occurred because of the resource quantity and quality (pollen or nectar), and environmental characteristics such as flower density and resource distribution.

Abstract
Report of the case of a Caucasian girl, presently 3 years old, who has been followed at the Pediatric Service of the Walter Cantidio Hospital (Federal University of Ceará; Fortaleza, Brazil) since she was 15 days old. At birth she presented a duplication of the bladder, urethra, external genitalia, vagina, colon, and rectum. No cardiac anomalies, bone deformities, or other congenital malformations were detected. When she was 16 months old the child underwent corrective surgery, with rectal vault reconstruction, placing a single and continent anal sphincter in its usual position and resection of the longitudinal vaginal septum, forming a single vaginal cavity. The surgery also resulted in a perineum of normal appearance. Presently, the patient is doing well.

Hyperplasia of the sublingual salivary glands in an entity of unknown cause not previously reported in the literature. The main clinical finding is a unilateral or bilateral painless sublingual enlargement of the sublingual gland without any recognized local or systemic associated factor.
