Psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction-Frustration Scale (BPNSFS)

BACKGROUND

The aim of this study is to validate the Arabic version of the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale (BPNSFS), and to investigate the extent of its invariance across five Arab countries and gender.

METHODS

A back-translated version of the BPNSFS, the second version of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), and the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale (WEMWBS) were administered to a sample consisting of 1082 undergraduate students affiliated with universities in five Arab countries (487 males and 595 females: Mage = 20.04 ± 1.87 years). The data of the BPNSFS were examined for univariate and multivariate normality using Shapiro-Wilk tests and Mardia's coefficient, respectively. To evaluate and compare the four models with confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), we used the following goodness-of-fit indices: the chi-square value (χ2), comparative fit index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis index (TLI), Root Mean-Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA), and Baysian Information Criterion (BIC). A multi-group CFA [Byrne in Structural equation modeling with EQS: basic concepts, applications, and programming, Routledge, Abingdon, 2013] on the BPNSFS structure to examine its invariance across the five Arab countries and across genders.

RESULTS

The results of confirmatory factor analysis supported the generalizability of the BPNSFS's six-factor model to the five Arab countries. The relationships between the six psychological needs satisfaction and frustrations and both mental health and symptoms of depression provide additional evidence on the construct validity of the BPNSFS through cross cultural data. The findings of BPNSFS's measurement invariance across males and females and across the five Arab countries help ensure that the latent means are comparable across these different groups.

CONCLUSIONS

The study concluded that the Arabic version of the BPNSFS which measures satisfaction and frustration of the three basic needs (autonomy, competency, and relatedness) is proved to be invariant across the five Arab countries and gender and can be used to compare the basic psychological needs in the Arab context.

Assessment of Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF- MS) for Accurate Bacterial Identification in Clinical Labs

Introduction/Objective

On behalf of the diagnostic Medical Laboratory rapid, and accurate identification of bacteria with their one-to-one anti-microbial susceptibility outlines is of ultimate importance for the management of infected patients. Contemporary microbial identification methods employed in routine clinical diagnostic laboratories relies on the use of conventional phenotypic methods. Phenotypic methods are time consuming with minimum turn-around times of at least 24 hrs and in many occurrences of 48hrs. With the intention of accelerate laboratory processes the MALDI-TOF MS was familiarized. MALDI-TOF MS is established on proteomic profiling and permits for rapid identification of bacteria. This technology has not been widely used in Egypt, but has been regularly used in Europe for the past few years.

Methods

Two hundred forty three positive non duplicate blood cultures were accrued over a period of six months. Experimental aliquots were taken from excess sample material that was collected as part of routine clinical care. 105 were positive for Gram negative bacilli, 123 were positive for Gram positive cocci, 3 positive for Gram positive bacilli, and 7 were positive for yeast. MALDI-TOF identification was compared to conventional identification. Conventional identification consisted of a combination of MALDI-TOF identification of a subcultures colony by direct smear, biochemical reactions, Vitek 2, and molecular identification.

Results

Ninety seven of the one hundred and five blood cultures positive for Gram negative bacilli were monomicrobial. The majority of these were identified as Escherichia coli by conventional methods, followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Eighty-four of these monomicrobial cultures were identified by MALDI-TOF to the species level. Eighty-one of the eighty-four were concordant with the conventional identification (96.4%).

Conclusion

The MALDI-TOF proved to be useful for the rapid and reliable identification of g-ve bacteria from the clinical specimens. The difference in turnaround time for bacterial identification was significant between MALDI-TOF MS and VITEK 2 with minimal preparation for the blood cultures.

Human fascioliasis and anaemia in Dakahlia Governorate, Egypt

Fasciola infection (fascioliasis) appeared to be endemic in Egypt. Stool samples of fourty eight patients were coprologically diagnosed. According to Fasciola egg counting per gram stool, the severity of infection was divided into light infection in 60.5%, moderate in 27.1% and severe infection in 12.5%. No significant correlation was detected between severity of infection and patients' sex. Complete blood picture, reticylocytic count, serum iron, immunological assays as anti-nuclear, anti-smooth muscle antibody, anti-mitochondrial anti-body, anti-DNA tests and rheumatoid factor and occult blood in stool were investigated. Normocytic normochromic anaemia was detected in 62.5% of the fascioliasis patients, microcytic hypochromic anaemia in 31.3% and macrocytic one in 6.3%. Highly significant negative correlation (R = -0.68) was detected between haemoglobin concentration and egg count per gram faeces. Human fascioliasis was associated with normocytic normochromic anaemia and to a lesser extent microcytic hypochromic anemia.
