Measurement of the ^{140}Ce(n,γ) Cross Section at n_TOF and Its Astrophysical Implications for the Chemical Evolution of the Universe

^{140}Ce(n,γ) is a key reaction for slow neutron-capture (s-process) nucleosynthesis due to being a bottleneck in the reaction flow. For this reason, it was measured with high accuracy (uncertainty ≈5%) at the n_TOF facility, with an unprecedented combination of a high purity sample and low neutron-sensitivity detectors. The measured Maxwellian averaged cross section is up to 40% higher than previously accepted values. Stellar model calculations indicate a reduction around 20% of the s-process contribution to the Galactic cerium abundance and smaller sizeable differences for most of the heavier elements. No variations are found in the nucleosynthesis from massive stars.

Imaging of Myocardial αvβ3 Integrin Expression for Evaluation of Myocardial Injury After Acute Myocardial Infarction

[68Ga]Ga-NODAGA-Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) is a PET tracer targeting αvβ3 integrin, which is upregulated during angiogenesis soon after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We prospectively evaluated determinants of myocardial uptake of [68Ga]Ga-NODAGA-RGD and its associations with left ventricular (LV) function in patients after AMI. Methods: Myocardial blood flow and [68Ga]Ga-NODAGA-RGD uptake (60 min after injection) were evaluated by PET in 31 patients 7.7 ± 3.8 d after primary percutaneous coronary intervention for ST-elevation AMI. Transthoracic echocardiography of LV function was performed on the day of PET and at the 6-mo follow-up. Results: PET images showed increased uptake of [68Ga]Ga-NODAGA-RGD in the ischemic area at risk (AAR), predominantly in injured myocardial segments. The SUV in the segment with the highest uptake (SUVmax) in the ischemic AAR was higher than the SUVmean of the remote myocardium (0.73 ± 0.16 vs. 0.51 ± 0.11, P < 0.001). Multivariable predictors of [68Ga]Ga-NODAGA-RGD uptake in the AAR included high peak N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (P < 0.001), low LV ejection fraction, low global longitudinal strain (P = 0.01), and low longitudinal strain in the AAR (P = 0.01). [68Ga]Ga-NODAGA-RGD uptake corrected for myocardial blood flow and perfusable tissue fraction in the AAR predicted improvement in global longitudinal strain at follow-up (P = 0.002), independent of peak troponin, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide, and LV ejection fraction. Conclusion: [68Ga]Ga-NODAGA-RGD uptake shows increased αvβ3 integrin expression in the ischemic AAR early after AMI that is associated with regional and global systolic dysfunction, as well as increased LV filling pressure. Increased [68Ga]Ga-NODAGA-RGD uptake predicts improvement of global LV function 6 mo after AMI.

Randall-Type Monoclonal Immunoglobulin Deposition Disease in Bone Scintigraphy

ABSTRACT

Bone scintigraphy is recognized as a noninvasive alternative to endomyocardial biopsy for the diagnostic of wild-type (wATTR) and hereditary ATTR amyloidosis (hATTR). Light chain amyloidosis (AL), Randall-type monoclonal immunoglobulin deposition disease , sarcoidosis, hemochromatosis, Fabry disease, and mucopolysaccharidoses are differential diagnosis of ATTR amyloidosis. Bone scintigraphy allows visualization of extracardiac involvements of AL amyloidosis: pleural, retroperitoneal, liver, spleen, and soft tissue. We report the case of a patient who underwent bone scintigraphy for suspected ATTR amyloidosis. Bone scan showed cardiac (Perugini score 2), hepatic, and renal hyperfixation. A cardiac biopsy demonstrated a Randall-type deposit, without amyloid deposit.

Interrelation between cardiac and brain small-vessel disease: a pilot quantitative PET and MRI study

BACKGROUND

Small-vessel disease (SVD) plays a crucial role in cardiac and brain ischemia, but little is known about potential interrelation between both. We retrospectively evaluated 370 patients, aiming at assessing the interrelation between cardiac and brain SVD by using quantitative 82Rb cardiac PET/CT and brain MRI.

RESULTS

In our population of 370 patients, 176 had normal myocardial perfusion, 38 had pure cardiac SVD and 156 had obstructive coronary artery disease. All underwent both a cardiac 82Rb PET/CT and a brain 1.5T or 3T MRI. Left-ventricle myocardial blood flow (LV-MBF) and flow reserve (LV-MFR) were recorded from 82Rb PET/CT, while Fazekas score, white matter lesion (WMab) volume, deep gray matter lesion (GMab) volume, and brain morphometry (for z-score calculation) using the MorphoBox research application were derived from MRI. Groups were compared with Kruskal-Wallis test, and the potential interrelation between heart and brain SVD markers was assessed using Pearson's correlation coefficient. Patients with cardiac SVD had lower stress LV-MBF and MFR (P < 0.001) than patients with normal myocardial perfusion; Fazekas scores and WMab volumes were similar in those two groups (P > 0.45). In patients with cardiac SVD only, higher rest LV-MBF was associated with a lower left-putamen (rho = - 0.62, P = 0.033), right-thalamus (rho = 0.64, P = 0.026), and right-pallidum (rho = 0.60, P = 0.039) z-scores and with a higher GMab volume. Lower stress LV-MBF was associated with lower left-caudate z-score (rho = 0.69, P = 0.014), while lower LV-MFR was associated with lower left (rho = 0.75, P = 0.005)- and right (rho = 0.59, P = 0.045)-putamen z-scores, as well as higher right-thalamus GMab volume (rho = - 0.72, P = 0.009).

CONCLUSION

Significant interrelations between cardiac and cerebral SVD markers were found, especially regarding deep gray matter alterations, which supports the hypothesis of SVD as a systemic disease.

Ultrafast cadmium-zinc-telluride-based renal single-photon emission computed tomography: clinical validation

BACKGROUND

One of the main limitations of 99mtechnetium-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) scan is the long acquisition time.

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the feasibility of short DMSA scan acquisition times using a cadmium-zinc-telluride-based single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) system in children.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The data of 27 children (median age: 4 years; 16 girls) who underwent DMSA SPECT were retrospectively analyzed. Both planar and SPECT DMSA were performed. SPECT images were analyzed using coronal-simulated planar two-dimensional images. A reduction in SPECT acquisition time was simulated to provide 4 series (SPECT-15 min, SPECT-10 min, SPECT-5 min and SPECT-2.5 min). A direct comparison of the planar and SPECT series was performed, including semi-quantification reproducibility, image quality (mean quality score on a scale of 0 to 2) and inter- and intra-observer reproducibility of the scintigraphic patterns.

RESULTS

The overall image quality score (± standard deviation) was 1.3 (± 0.6) for the planar data set, 1.6 (± 0.5) for the SPECT-15 min data set, 1.4 (± 0.5) for the SPECT-10 min data set, 1.0 (± 0.5) for the SPECT-5 min data set and 0.6 (± 0.6) for the SPECT-2.5 min data set. Median Kappa coefficients for inter-observer agreement between planar and SPECT images were greater than 0.83 for all series and all readers except one reader for the SPECT-2.5 min series (median Kappa coefficient = 0.77).

CONCLUSION

Shortening SPECT acquisitions to 5 min is feasible with minimal impact on images in terms of quality and reproducibility.

Modeling tumor size dynamics based on real-world electronic health records and image data in advanced melanoma patients receiving immunotherapy

The development of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has revolutionized cancer therapy but only a fraction of patients benefits from this therapy. Model-informed drug development can be used to assess prognostic and predictive clinical factors or biomarkers associated with treatment response. Most pharmacometric models have thus far been developed using data from randomized clinical trials, and further studies are needed to translate their findings into the real-world setting. We developed a tumor growth inhibition model based on real-world clinical and imaging data in a population of 91 advanced melanoma patients receiving ICIs (i.e., ipilimumab, nivolumab, and pembrolizumab). Drug effect was modeled as an ON/OFF treatment effect, with a tumor killing rate constant identical for the three drugs. Significant and clinically relevant covariate effects of albumin, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status were identified on the baseline tumor volume parameter, as well as NRAS mutation on tumor growth rate constant using standard pharmacometric approaches. In a population subgroup (n = 38), we had the opportunity to conduct an exploratory analysis of image-based covariates (i.e., radiomics features), by combining machine learning and conventional pharmacometric covariate selection approaches. Overall, we demonstrated an innovative pipeline for longitudinal analyses of clinical and imaging RWD with a high-dimensional covariate selection method that enabled the identification of factors associated with tumor dynamics. This study also provides a proof of concept for using radiomics features as model covariates.

Comparison of the prognostic value of impaired stress myocardial blood flow, myocardial flow reserve, and myocardial flow capacity on low-dose Rubidium-82 SiPM PET/CT

BACKGROUND

The most reliable quantitative variable on Rubidium-82 (82Rb) cardiac PET/CT for predicting major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) has not been characterized with low-dose silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) technology, which allows halving injected activity and radiation dose delivering less than 1.0 mSv in a 70-kg individual.

METHODS AND RESULTS

We prospectively enrolled 234 consecutive participants with suspected myocardial ischemia. Participants underwent 82Rb cardiac SiPM PET/CT (5 MBq/kg) and were followed up for MACE over 652 days (interquartile range 559-751 days). For each participant, global stress myocardial blood flow (stress MBF), global myocardial flow reserve (MFR), and regional severely reduced myocardial flow capacity (MFCsevere) were measured. The Youden index was used to select optimal thresholds. In multivariate analysis after adjustments for clinical risk factors, reduced global stress MBF < 1.94 ml/min/g, reduced global MFR < 1.98, and regional MFCsevere > 3.2% of left ventricle emerged all as independent predictors of MACE (HR 4.5, 3.1, and 3.67, respectively, p < 0.001). However, only reduced global stress MBF remained an independent prognostic factor for MACE after adjusting for clinical risk factors and the combined use of global stress MBF, global MFR, and regional MFCsevere impairments (HR 2.81, p = 0.027).

CONCLUSION

Using the latest SiPM PET technology with low-dose 82Rb halving the standard activity to deliver < 1 mSv for a 70-kg patient, impaired global stress MBF, global MFR, and regional MFC were powerful predictors of cardiovascular events, outperforming traditional cardiovascular risk factors. However, only reduced global stress MBF independently predicted MACE, being superior to global MFR and regional MFC impairments.

Quantitative analysis of 99mTc-pertechnetate thyroid uptake with a large-field CZT gamma camera: feasibility and comparison between SPECT/CT and planar acquisitions

PURPOSE

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of a large field Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) camera to estimate thyroid uptake (TU) on single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images with and without attenuation correction (Tomo-AC and Tomo-NoAC) compared with Planar acquisition in a series of 23 consecutive patients. The secondary objective was to determine radiation doses for the tracer administration and for the additional Computed Tomography (CT) scan.

METHODS

Cross-calibration factors were determined using a thyroid phantom, for Planar, Tomo-AC and Tomo-NoAC images. Then Planar and SPECT/CT acquisitions centered on the thyroid were performed on 5 anthropomorphic phantoms with activity ranging from 0.4 to 10 MBq, and 23 patients after administration of 79.2 ± 3.7 MBq of [^99mTc]-pertechnetate. We estimated the absolute thyroid activity (AThA) for the anthropomorphic phantoms and the TU for the patients. Radiation dose was also determined using International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) reports and VirtualDose^TMCT software.

RESULTS

Cross-calibration factors were 66.2 ± 4.9, 60.7 ± 0.7 and 26.5 ± 0.3 counts/(MBq s), respectively, for Planar, Tomo-AC and Tomo-NoAC images. Theoretical and estimated AThA for Planar, Tomo-AC and Tomo-NoAC images were statistically highly correlated (r < 0.99; P < 10^-4) and the average of the relative percentage difference between theoretical and estimated AThA were (8.6 ± 17.8), (- 1.3 ± 5.2) and (12.8 ± 5.7) %, respectively. Comparisons between TU based on different pairs of images (Planar vs Tomo-AC, Planar vs Tomo-NoAC and Tomo-AC vs Tomo-NoAC) showed statistically significant correlation (r = 0.972, 0.961 and 0.935, respectively; P < 10^-3). Effective and thyroid absorbed doses were, respectively (0.34_CT + 0.95_NM) mSv, and (3.88_CT + 1.74_NM) mGy.

CONCLUSION

AThA estimation using Planar and SPECT/CT acquisitions on a new generation of CZT large-field cameras is feasible. In addition, TU on SPECT/CT was as accurate as conventional planar acquisition, but the CT induced additional thyroid exposure. Semiautomated Pipeline to Quantify Tumor Evolution From Real-World Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography Imaging

PURPOSE

A semiautomated pipeline for the collection and curation of free-text and imaging real-world data (RWD) was developed to quantify cancer treatment outcomes in large-scale retrospective real-world studies. The objectives of this article are to illustrate the challenges of RWD extraction, to demonstrate approaches for quality assurance, and to showcase the potential of RWD for precision oncology.

METHODS

We collected data from patients with advanced melanoma receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors at the Lausanne University Hospital. Cohort selection relied on semantically annotated electronic health records and was validated using process mining. The selected imaging examinations were segmented using an automatic commercial software prototype. A postprocessing algorithm enabled longitudinal lesion identification across imaging time points and consensus malignancy status prediction. Resulting data quality was evaluated against expert-annotated ground-truth and clinical outcomes obtained from radiology reports.

RESULTS

The cohort included 108 patients with melanoma and 465 imaging examinations (median, 3; range, 1-15 per patient). Process mining was used to assess clinical data quality and revealed the diversity of care pathways encountered in a real-world setting. Longitudinal postprocessing greatly improved the consistency of image-derived data compared with single time point segmentation results (classification precision increased from 53% to 86%). Image-derived progression-free survival resulting from postprocessing was comparable with the manually curated clinical reference (median survival of 286 v 336 days, P = .89).

CONCLUSION

We presented a general pipeline for the collection and curation of text- and image-based RWD, together with specific strategies to improve reliability. We showed that the resulting disease progression measures match reference clinical assessments at the cohort level, indicating that this strategy has the potential to unlock large amounts of actionable retrospective real-world evidence from clinical records.

Comparison of integrin αvβ3 expression with 68Ga-NODAGA-RGD PET/CT and glucose metabolism with 18F-FDG PET/CT in esophageal or gastroesophageal junction cancers

BACKGROUND

The primary aims of this study were to compare in patients with esophageal or esophagogastric junction cancers the potential of ⁶⁸Ga-NODAGA-RGD PET/CT with that of ¹⁸F-FDG PET/CT regarding tumoral uptake and distribution, as well as histopathologic examination.

METHODS

Ten ⁶⁸Ga-NODAGA-RGD and ten ¹⁸F-FDG PET/CT were performed in nine prospectively included participants (1 woman; aged 58 ± 8.4 y, range 40-69 y). Maximum SUV (SUV_max) and metabolic tumor volumes (MTV) were calculated. The Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman correlation analysis (ρ) were used.

RESULTS

⁶⁸Ga-NODAGA-RGD PET/CT detected positive uptake in 10 primary sites (8 for primary tumors and 2 for local relapse suspicion), 6 lymph nodes and 3 skeletal sites. ¹⁸F-FDG PET/CT detected positive uptake in the same sites but also in 16 additional lymph nodes and 1 adrenal gland. On a lesion-based analysis, SUV_max of ¹⁸F-FDG was significantly higher than those of ⁶⁸Ga-NODAGA-RGD (4.9 [3.7-11.3] vs. 3.2 [2.6-4.2] g/mL, p = 0.014). Only one participant showed a higher SUV_max in an osseous metastasis with ⁶⁸Ga-NODAGA-RGD as compared to ¹⁸F-FDG (6.6 vs. 3.9 g/mL). Correlation analysis showed positive correlation between ¹⁸F-FDG and ⁶⁸Ga-NODAGA-RGD PET parameters (ρ = 0.56, p = 0.012 for SUV_max, ρ = 0.78, p < 0.001 for lesion-to-background ratios and ρ = 0.58, p = 0.024 for MTV). We observed that ¹⁸F-FDG uptake was homogenous inside all the confirmed primary sites (n = 9). In contrast, ⁶⁸Ga-NODAGA-RGD PET showed more heterogenous uptake in 6 out of the 9 confirmed primary sites (67%), seen mostly in the periphery of the tumor in 5 out of the 9 confirmed primary sites (56%), and showed slight extensions into perilesional structures in 5 out of the 9 confirmed primary sites (56%).

CONCLUSIONS

In conclusion, ⁶⁸Ga-NODAGA-RGD has lower potential in the detection of esophageal or esophagogastric junction malignancies compared to ¹⁸F-FDG. However, the results suggest that PET imaging of integrin α_vβ₃ expression may provide complementary information and could aid in tumor diversity and delineation.

Metabolic Activity of Neurogenic Heterotopic Ossification on 18F-FDG PET/CT Matching with Ongoing Osteoblastic Activity on Bone Scan

A 54-year-old man, with previous history of neurogenic heterotopic ossification (HO) in muscles around the left hip following a spinal cord injury ten months earlier, was referred to our nuclear medicine center for an ¹⁸fluorine-fluorodeoxyglucose (¹⁸F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) to rule out a spondylodiscitis. No sign of spondylodiscitis was found on ¹⁸F-FDG PET/CT, but images revealed an increased ¹⁸F-FDG uptake in HO areas, matching with ongoing osteoblastic activity on a following bone scan.

Identifying prodromal biomarkers for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder using magnetoencephalography

Introduction

Schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) are severe mental illnesses with large overlapping heritability. Both disorders are associated with altered neurophysiological responses, as measured with magnetoencephalography (MEG) or electroencephalography (EEG), particularly reduced mismatch negativity (MMN) and 40 Hz auditory steady-state responses (ASSR). These deficits could potentially both serve as early markers of illness and provide insight into the underlying pathophysiology as endophenotypes. First-degree relatives to patients with SZ and BD also show some neurophysiological deficits, however whether these deficits can be detected in adolescent offspring of patients is undetermined.

Objectives

We aim to investigate whether adolescents at familial high risk of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder show aberrant MMN and ASSR compared to population-based controls.

Methods

We will investigate MMN and 40 Hz ASSR in 15 year old adolescents (n ≈ 175) born to parents diagnosed with either SZ (FHR-SZ), BD (FHR-BD), or neither SZ or BD (population-based controls, PBC) using MEG. We will first perform sensor-level analyses and subsequently apply dynamic causal modeling (DCM) to investigate effective connectivity and make inferences about the underlying neurobiological mechanisms. We will investigate whether current psychopathology, cognitive status, and genetic risk for SZ and BD predict neurophysiological responses in the adolescents. Investigations are part of The Danish High Risk and Resilience Study - VIA (VIA15), a population-based longitudinal cohort study integrating social, psychological and biological risk factors and outcomes for SZ and BD.

Conclusions

The VIA15 study will allow for unprecedented insight into the neurobiological development of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Overview of the RGD-Based PET Agents Use in Patients With Cardiovascular Diseases: A Systematic Review

Studies using arginine–glycine–aspartate (RGD)-PET agents in cardiovascular diseases have been recently published. The aim of this systematic review was to perform an updated, evidence-based summary about the role of RGD-based PET agents in patients with cardiovascular diseases to better address future research in this setting. Original articles within the field of interest reporting the role of RGD-based PET agents in patients with cardiovascular diseases were eligible for inclusion in this systematic review. A systematic literature search of PubMed/MEDLINE and Cochrane library databases was performed until October 26, 2021. Literature shows an increasing role of RGD-based PET agents in patients with cardiovascular diseases. Overall, two main topics emerged: the infarcted myocardium and atherosclerosis. The existing studies support that α_vβ₃ integrin expression in the infarcted myocardium is well evident in RGD PET/CT scans. RGD-based PET radiotracers accumulate at the site of infarction as early as 3 days and seem to be peaking at 1–3 weeks post myocardial infarction before decreasing, but only 1 study assessed serial changes of myocardial RGD-based PET uptake after ischemic events. RGD-based PET uptake in large vessels showed correlation with CT plaque burden, and increased signal was found in patients with prior cardiovascular events. In human atherosclerotic carotid plaques, increased PET signal was observed in stenotic compared with non-stenotic areas based on MR or CT angiography data. Histopathological analysis found a co-localization between tracer accumulation and areas of α_vβ₃ expression. Promising applications using RGD-based PET agents are emerging, such as prediction of remodeling processes in the infarcted myocardium or detection of active atherosclerosis, with potentially significant clinical impact.

First 80Se(n,γ) cross section measurement with high resolution in the full stellar energy range 1 eV - 100 keV and its astrophysical implications for the s-process

Most elements heavier than iron have been generated in the stellar media by means of neutron capture reactions, approximately half are produced by the slow neutron capture or s-process. Radiative neutron capture cross section measurements are of fundamental importance for the study of this mechanism. In this contribution we present a brief summary on the measurement and results for the 80Se(n,γ) cross-section. The experiment was carried out at CERN n_TOF EAR1 via the time of flight (ToF) technique, using four C6D6 scintillation detectors with very fast response. More than a hundred new resonances have been analyzed for the first time with a high accuracy. The MACS obtained at kT = 8 keV is 36% smaller than the recommended value in KADo-NiS. Some of the astrophysical implications of this result are elucidated in this contribution.

Imaging angiogenesis in atherosclerosis in large arteries with 68Ga-NODAGA-RGD PET/CT: relationship with clinical atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease

BACKGROUND

Integrin alpha-V-beta-3 (αvβ3) pathway is involved in intraplaque angiogenesis and inflammation and represents a promising target for molecular imaging in cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to assess the clinical correlates of arterial wall accumulation of ⁶⁸Ga-NODAGA-RGD, a specific α_vβ₃ integrin ligand for PET.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The data of 44 patients who underwent ⁶⁸Ga-NODAGA-RGD PET/CT scans were retrospectively analyzed. Tracer accumulation in the vessel wall of major arteries was analyzed semi-quantitatively by blood-pool-corrected target-to-background ratios. Tracer uptake was compared with clinically documented atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, cardiovascular risk factors and calcified plaque burden. Data were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test, Pearson correlation and Spearman correlation.

RESULTS

⁶⁸Ga-NODAGA-RGD arterial uptake was significantly higher in patients with previous clinically documented atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (mean TBR 2.44 [2.03-2.55] vs. 1.81 [1.56-1.96], p = 0.001) and showed a significant correlation with prior cardiovascular or cerebrovascular event (r = 0.33, p = 0.027), BMI (ρ = 0.38, p = 0.01), plaque burden (ρ = 0.31, p = 0.04) and hypercholesterolemia (r = 0.31, p = 0.04).

CONCLUSIONS

⁶⁸Ga-NODAGA-RGD holds promise as a non-invasive marker of disease activity in atherosclerosis, providing information about intraplaque angiogenesis.

An Intravenous 100-mL Lipid Emulsion Infusion Dramatically Improves Myocardial Glucose Metabolism Extinction in Cardiac FDG PET Clinical Practice

PURPOSE

Physiological myocardial accumulation of FDG impairs the diagnosis of inflammatory/infectious or tumoral myocardial detection by FDG PET/CT. We prospectively evaluated the addition, 3 hours before imaging, of an intravenous 100-mL lipid emulsion infusion (Intralipid) to a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet (HFLCD) for at least 2 meals followed by a fast of at least 6 to 12 hours in patients referred for the diagnosis of myocardial inflammation, endocarditis, cardiac or paracardiac masses, intracardiac device, or prosthetic valve infections.

METHODS

Data of 58 patients consecutively included (28 Intralipid patients, 30 controls with HFLCD alone) were compared. FDG uptake in normal myocardium was scored from 0 (complete myocardial suppression) to 3 (high diffuse uptake). Myocardial maximal, peak, and mean SUV and the rate of interpretable images according to the clinical indication were measured.

RESULTS

Compared with controls, Intralipid infusion significantly improved the rate of score 0 (89% vs 63%, P = 0.021), of interpretable images according to the clinical indication (100% vs 72%, P = 0.0047) and decreased all myocardial SUV values (eg, SUVmax median, 1.9 [interquartile range, 1.7-2.5] vs 3.1 [interquartile range, 2.3-4.1]; P < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

A lipid emulsion infusion in addition to HFLCD better suppresses cardiac glucose metabolism than HFLCD alone.

Paraneoplastic Multicentric Reticulohistiocytosis on 18F-FDG PET/CT Breast Carcinoma Follow-up

ABSTRACT

We report the case of a 60-year-old woman who underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT to evaluate a metastatic breast carcinoma. Follow-up 18F-FDG PET/CT showed progressive disease with 18F-FDG increased in primary tumor, axillary lymph nodes, and pleural and bone diffuse metastases but also a concomitant uptake in multiples joints. The anatomopathological analysis from skin biopsy revealed a multicentric reticulohistiocytosis, considered paraneoplastic in the context. Second follow-up PET/CT after treatment showed a decrease of 18F-FDG uptake in previously affected joints, consistent with the symptoms evolution. 18F-FDG PET/CT could be helpful in the detection and the evaluation of such rare systemic disorder.

Unexpected Vertebral Bodies Trapping of 99mTc-Macroaggregated Albumin During Lung Perfusion Scintigraphy in a Patient With Collateral Paravertebral Venous System

ABSTRACT

A 35-year-old woman was referred to our nuclear medicine center for a ventilation and perfusion (VQ) pulmonary scintigraphy to detect pulmonary embolism. She was treated with low-molecular-weight heparin following a proximal venous thrombosis of the right upper limb and had a previous history of an infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the right breast. Surprisingly, the VQ scintigraphy showed uptake of 99mTc-MAA in several superior vertebrae. A contrast-enhanced CT scan revealed a dilated collateral paravertebral venous system due to the deep vein thrombosis extended from superior vena cava to brachiocephalic trunk. 99mTc-MAA was trapped through the dilated vertebral venous system.

Neutron Capture on the s-Process Branching Point ^{171}Tm via Time-of-Flight and Activation

The neutron capture cross sections of several unstable nuclides acting as branching points in the s process are crucial for stellar nucleosynthesis studies. The unstable ^{171}Tm (t_{1/2}=1.92  yr) is part of the branching around mass A∼170 but its neutron capture cross section as a function of the neutron energy is not known to date. In this work, following the production for the first time of more than 5 mg of ^{171}Tm at the high-flux reactor Institut Laue-Langevin in France, a sample was produced at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. Two complementary experiments were carried out at the neutron time-of-flight facility (n_TOF) at CERN in Switzerland and at the SARAF liquid lithium target facility at Soreq Nuclear Research Center in Israel by time of flight and activation, respectively. The result of the time-of-flight experiment consists of the first ever set of resonance parameters and the corresponding average resonance parameters, allowing us to make an estimation of the Maxwellian-averaged cross sections (MACS) by extrapolation. The activation measurement provides a direct and more precise measurement of the MACS at 30 keV: 384(40) mb, with which the estimation from the n_TOF data agree at the limit of 1 standard deviation. This value is 2.6 times lower than the JEFF-3.3 and ENDF/B-VIII evaluations, 25% lower than that of the Bao et al. compilation, and 1.6 times larger than the value recommended in the KADoNiS (v1) database, based on the only previous experiment. Our result affects the nucleosynthesis at the A∼170 branching, namely, the ^{171}Yb abundance increases in the material lost by asymptotic giant branch stars, providing a better match to the available pre-solar SiC grain measurements compared to the calculations based on the current JEFF-3.3 model-based evaluation.

Setup for the measurement of the 235U(n, f) cross section relative to n-p scattering up to 1 GeV

The neutron induced fission of 235U is extensively used as a reference for neutron fluence measurements in various applications, ranging from the investigation of the biological effectiveness of high energy neutrons, to the measurement of high energy neutron cross sections of relevance for accelerator driven nuclear systems. Despite its widespread use, no data exist on neutron induced fission of 235U above 200 MeV. The neutron facility n_TOF offers the possibility to improve the situation. The measurement of 235U(n,f) relative to the differential n-p scattering cross-section, was carried out in September 2018 with the aim of providing accurate and precise cross section data in the energy range from 10 MeV up to 1 GeV. In such measurements, Recoil Proton Telescopes (RPTs) are used to measure the neutron flux while the fission events are detected and counted with dedicated detectors. In this paper the measurement campaign and the experimental set-up are illustrated.

Monte Carlo simulations and n-p differential scattering data measured with Proton Recoil Telescopes

The neutron-induced fission cross section of 235U, a standard at thermal energy and between 0.15 MeV and 200 MeV, plays a crucial role in nuclear technology applications. The long-standing need of improving cross section data above 20 MeV and the lack of experimental data above 200 MeV motivated a new experimental campaign at the n_TOF facility at CERN. The measurement has been performed in 2018 at the experimental area 1 (EAR1), located at 185 m from the neutron-producing target (the experiment is presented by A. Manna et al. in a contribution to this conference). The 235U(n,f) cross section from 20 MeV up to about 1 GeV has been measured relative to the 1H(n,n)1H reaction, which is considered the primary reference in this energy region. The neutron flux impinging on the 235U sample (a key quantity for determining the fission events) has been obtained by detecting recoil protons originating from n-p scattering in a C2H4 sample. Two Proton Recoil Telescopes (PRT), consisting of several layers of solid-state detectors and fast plastic scintillators, have been located at proton scattering angles of 25.07° and 20.32°, out of the neutron beam. The PRTs exploit the ΔE-E technique for particle identification, a basic requirement for the rejection of charged particles from neutron-induced reactions in carbon. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations were performed to characterize proton transport through the different slabs of silicon and scintillation detectors, to optimize the experimental set-up and to deduce the efficiency of the whole PRT detector. In this work we compare measured data collected with the PRTs with a full Monte Carlo simulation based on the Geant-4 toolkit.

Measurement of the energy-differential cross-section of the 12C(n,p)12B and 12C(n,d)11B reactions at the n_TOF facility at CERN

Although the 12C(n,p)12B and 12C(n,d)11B reactions are of interest in several fields of basic and applied Nuclear Physics the present knowledge of these two cross-sections is far from being accurate and reliable, with both evaluations and data showing sizable discrepancies. As part of the challenging n_TOF program on (n,cp) nuclear reactions study, the energy differential cross-sections of the 12C(n,p)12B and 12C(n,d)11 B reactions have been measured at CERN from the reaction thresholds up to 30 MeV neutron energy. Both measurements have been recently performed at the long flight-path (185 m) experimental area of the n_TOF facility at CERN using a pure (99.95%) rigid graphite target and two silicon telescopes. In this paper an overview of the experiment is presented together with a few preliminary results.

Status and perspectives of the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN

Since the start of its operation in 2001, based on an idea of Prof. Carlo Rubbia [1], the neutron time of-flight facility of CERN, n_TOF, has become one of the most forefront neutron facilities in the world for wide-energy spectrum neutron cross section measurements. Thanks to the combination of excellent neutron energy resolution and high instantaneous neutron flux available in the two experimental areas, the second of which has been constructed in 2014, n_TOF is providing a wealth of new data on neutron-induced reactions of interest for nuclear astrophysics, advanced nuclear technologies and medical applications. The unique features of the facility will continue to be exploited in the future, to perform challenging new measurements addressing the still open issues and long-standing quests in the field of neutron physics. In this document the main characteristics of the n_TOF facility and their relevance for neutron studies in the different areas of research will be outlined, addressing the possible future contribution of n_TOF in the fields of nuclear astrophysics, nuclear technologies and medical applications. In addition, the future perspectives of the facility will be described including the upgrade of the spallation target, the setup of an imaging installation and the construction of a new irradiation area.

Neutron capture cross section measurements of 241Am at the n_TOF facility

Neutron capture on 241Am plays an important role in the nuclear energy production and also provides valuable information for the improvement of nuclear models and the statistical interpretation of the nuclear properties. A new experiment to measure the 241Am(n, γ) cross section in the thermal region and the first few resonances below 10 eV has been carried out at EAR2 of the n_TOF facility at CERN. Three neutron-insensitive C6D6 detectors have been used to measure the neutron-capture gamma cascade as a function of the neutron time of flight, and then deduce the neutron capture yield. Preliminary results will be presented and compared with previously obtained results at the same facility in EAR1. In EAR1 the gamma-ray background at thermal energies was about 90% of the signal while in EAR2 is up to a 25 factor much more favorable signal to noise ratio. We also extended the low energy limit down to subthermal energies. This measurement will allow a comparison with neutron capture measurements conducted at reactors and using a different experimental technique.

Study of photon strength functions of241Pu and245Cm from neutron capture measurements

We have measured theγ-rays following neutron capture on240Pu and244Cm at the n_TOF facility at CERN with the Total Absorption Calorimeter (TAC) and with C6D6 organic scintillators. The TAC is made of 40 BaF2 crystals operating in coincidence and covering almost the entire solid angle. This allows to obtain information concerning the energy spectra and the multiplicity of the measured captureγ-ray cascades. Additional information is also obtained from the C6D6 detectors. We have analyzed the measured data in order to draw conclusions about the Photon Strength Functions (PSFs) of241Pu and245Cm below their neutron separation energies. The analysis has been performed by fitting the PSFs to the experimental results, using the differential evolution method, in order to find neutron capture cascades capable of reproducing at the same time a great variety of deposited energy spectra.

First results of the 230Th(n,f) cross section measurements at the CERN n_TOF facility

The study of neutron-induced reactions on actinides is of considerable importance for the design of advanced nuclear systems and alternative fuel cycles. Specifically, 230Th is produced from the α-decay of 234U as a byproduct of the 232Th/233U fuel cycle, thus the accurate knowledge of its fission cross section is strongly required. However, few experimental datasets exist in literature with large deviations among them, covering the energy range between 0.2 to 25 MeV. In addition, the study of the 230Th(n,f) cross-section is of great interest in the research on the fission process related to the structure of the fission barriers. Previous measurements have revealed a large resonance at En=715 keV and additional fine structures, but with high discrepancies among the cross-section values of these measurements. This contribution presents preliminary results of the 230Th(n,f) cross-section measurements at the CERN n_TOF facility. The high purity targets of the natural, but very rare isotope 230Th, were produced at JRC-Geel in Belgium. The measurements were performed at both experimental areas (EAR-1 and EAR-2) of the n_TOF facility, covering a very broad energy range from thermal up to at least 100 MeV. The experimental setup was based on Micromegas detectors with the 235U(n,f) and 238U(n,f) reaction cross-sections used as reference.

New reaction rates for the destruction of7Be during big bang nucleosynthesis measured at CERN/n_TOF and their implications on the cosmological lithium problem

New measurements of the7Be(n,α)4He and7Be(n,p)7Li reaction cross sections from thermal to keV neutron energies have been recently performed at CERN/n_TOF. Based on the new experimental results, astrophysical reaction rates have been derived for both reactions, including a proper evaluation of their uncertainties in the thermal energy range of interest for big bang nucleosynthesis studies. The new estimate of the7Be destruction rate, based on these new results, yields a decrease of the predicted cosmological7Li abundance insufficient to provide a viable solution to the cosmological lithium problem.

The 154Gd neutron capture cross section measured at the n_TOF facility and its astrophysical implications

The (n, γ) cross sections of the gadolinium isotopes play an important role in the study of the stellar nucleosynthesis. In particular, among the isotopes heavier than Fe, 154Gd together with 152Gd have the peculiarity to be mainly produced by the slow capture process, the so-called s-process, since they are shielded against the β-decay chains from the r-process region by their stable samarium isobars. Such a quasi pure s-process origin makes them crucial for testing the robustness of stellar models in galactic chemical evolution (GCE). According to recent models, the 154Gd and 152Gd abundances are expected to be 15-20% lower than the reference un-branched s-process 150Sm isotope. The close correlation between stellar abundances and neutron capture cross sections prompted for an accurate measurement of 154Gd cross section in order to reduce the uncertainty attributable to nuclear physics input and eventually rule out one of the possible causes of present discrepancies between observation and model predictions. To this end, the neutron capture cross section of 154Gd was measured in a wide neutron energy range (from thermal up to some keV) with high resolution in the first experimental area of the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF (EAR1) at CERN. In this contribution, after a brief description of the motivation and of the experimental setup used in the measurement, the preliminary results of the 154Gd neutron capture reaction as well as their astrophysical implications are presented.

Measurement of the244Cm capture cross sections at both CERN n_TOF experimental areas

Accurate neutron capture cross section data for minor actinides (MAs) are required to estimate the production and transmutation rates of MAs in light water reactors with a high burnup, critical fast reactors like Gen-IV systems and other innovative reactor systems such as accelerator driven systems (ADS). Capture reactions of244Cm open the path for the formation of heavier Cm isotopes and of heavier elements such as Bk and Cf. In addition,244Cm shares nearly 50% of the total actinide decay heat in irradiated reactor fuels with a high burnup, even after three years of cooling.

Experimental data for this isotope are very scarce due to the difficulties of providing isotopically enriched samples and because the high intrinsic activity of the samples requires the use of neutron facilities with high instantaneous flux. The only two previous experimental data sets for this neutron capture cross section have been obtained in 1969 using a nuclear explosion and, more recently, at J-PARC in 2010. The neutron capture cross sections have been measured at n_TOF with the same samples that the previous experiments in J-PARC. The samples were measured at n_TOF Experimental Area 2 (EAR-2) with three C6D6detectors and also in Experimental Area 1 (EAR-1) with the Total Absorption Calorimeter (TAC). Preliminary results assessing the quality and limitations of these new experimental datasets are presented for the experiments in both areas. Preliminary yields of both measurements will be compared with evaluated libraries for the first time.

First results of the 241Am(n,f) cross section measurement at the Experimental Area 2 of the n_TOF facility at CERN

Feasibility, design and sensitivity studies on innovative nuclear reactors that could address the issue of nuclear waste transmutation using fuels enriched in minor actinides, require high accuracy cross section data for a variety of neutron-induced reactions from thermal energies to several tens of MeV. The isotope 241Am (T1/2= 433 years) is present in high-level nuclear waste (HLW), representing about 1.8 % of the actinide mass in spent PWR UOx fuel. Its importance increases with cooling time due to additional production from the β-decay of 241Pu with a half-life of 14.3 years. The production rate of 241 Am in conventional reactors, including its further accumulation through the decay of 241Pu and its destruction through transmutation/incineration are very important parameters for the design of any recycling solution. In the present work, the 241 Am(n,f) reaction cross-section was measured using Micromegas detectors at the Experimental Area 2 of the n_TOF facility at CERN. For the measurement, the 235U(n,f) and 238U(n,f) reference reactions were used for the determination of the neutron flux. In the present work an overview of the experimental setup and the adopted data analysis techniques is given along with preliminary results.

Fission program at n_TOF

Since its start in 2001 the n_TOF collaboration developed a measurement program on fission, in view of advanced fuels in new generation reactors. A special effort was made on measurement of cross sections of actinides, exploiting the peculiarity of the n_TOF neutron beam which spans a huge energy domain, from the thermal region up to GeV. Moreover fission fragment angular distributions have also been measured. An overview of the cross section results achieved with different detectors is presented, including a discussion of the 237Np case where discrepancies showed up between different detector systems. The results on the anisotropy of the fission fragments and its implication on the mechanism of neutron absorption, and in applications, are also shown.

Study of the photon strength functions and level density in the gamma decay of the n + 234U reaction

The accurate calculations of neutron-induced reaction cross sections are relevant for many nuclear applications. The photon strength functions and nuclear level densities are essential inputs for such calculations. These quantities for 235U are studied using the measurement of the gamma de-excitation cascades in radiative capture on 234U with the Total Absorption Calorimeter at n_TOF at CERN. This segmented 4π gamma calorimeter is designed to detect gamma rays emitted from the nucleus with high efficiency. This experiment provides information on gamma multiplicity and gamma spectra that can be compared with numerical simulations. The code DICEBOXC is used to simulate the gamma cascades while GEANT4 is used for the simulation of the interaction of these gammas with the TAC materials. Available models and their parameters are being tested using the present data. Some preliminary results of this ongoing study are presented and discussed.

Measurement of the 244Cm and 246Cm neutron-induced capture cross sections at the n_TOF facility

The neutron capture reactions of the 244Cm and 246Cm isotopes open the path for the formation of heavier Cm isotopes and heavier elements such as Bk and Cf in a nuclear reactor. In addition, both isotopes belong to the minor actinides with a large contribution to the decay heat and to the neutron emission in irradiated fuels. There are only two previous 244Cm and 246Cm capture cross section measurements: one in 1969 using a nuclear explosion [1] and the most recent data measured at J-PARC in 2010 [2]. The data for both isotopes are very scarce due to the difficulties in performing the measurements: high intrinsic activity of the samples and limited facilities capable of providing isotopically enriched samples.

We have measured both neutron capture cross sections at the n_TOF Experimental Area 2 (EAR-2) with three C6 D6 detectors and also at Area 1 (EAR-1) with the TAC. Preliminary results assessing the quality and limitations (back-ground subtraction, measurement technique and counting statistics) of this new experimental datasets are presented and discussed.

^{7}Be(n,p)^{7}Li Reaction and the Cosmological Lithium Problem: Measurement of the Cross Section in a Wide Energy Range at n_TOF at CERN

We report on the measurement of the ^{7}Be(n,p)^{7}Li cross section from thermal to approximately 325 keV neutron energy, performed in the high-flux experimental area (EAR2) of the n_TOF facility at CERN. This reaction plays a key role in the lithium yield of the big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) for standard cosmology. The only two previous time-of-flight measurements performed on this reaction did not cover the energy window of interest for BBN, and they showed a large discrepancy between each other. The measurement was performed with a Si telescope and a high-purity sample produced by implantation of a ^{7}Be ion beam at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. While a significantly higher cross section is found at low energy, relative to current evaluations, in the region of BBN interest, the present results are consistent with the values inferred from the time-reversal ^{7}Li(p,n)^{7}Be reaction, thus yielding only a relatively minor improvement on the so-called cosmological lithium problem. The relevance of these results on the near-threshold neutron production in the p+^{7}Li reaction is also discussed.

Measurement of the radiative capture cross section of the s-process branching points 204Tl and 171Tm at the n_TOF facility (CERN)

The neutron capture cross section of some unstable nuclei is especially relevant for s-process nucleosynthesis studies. This magnitude is crucial to determine the local abundance pattern, which can yield valuable information of the s-process stellar environment. In this work we describe the neutron capture (n,γ) measurement on two of these nuclei of interest, 204Tl and 171Tm, from target production to the final measurement, performed successfully at the n_TOF facility at CERN in 2014 and 2015. Preliminary results on the ongoing experimental data analysis will also be shown. These results include the first ever experimental observation of capture resonances for these two nuclei.

First Measurement of 72Ge(n, γ) at n_TOF

The slow neutron capture process (s-process) is responsible for producing about half of the elemental abundances heavier than iron in the universe. Neutron capture cross sections on stable isotopes are a key nuclear physics input for s-process studies. The 72Ge(n, γ) cross section has an important influence on production of isotopes between Ge and Zr during s-process in massive stars and therefore experimental data are urgently required. 72Ge(n, γ) was measured at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF (CERN) for the first time at stellar energies. The measurement was performed using an enriched 72GeO2 sample at a flight path of 185m with a set of liquid scintillation detectors (C6D6). The motivation, experiment and current status of the data analysis are reported.

Reproduction affects flight activity in female and male Daubenton’s bats, Myotis daubentoni

Nearly all mammals in the temperate zone breed in spring and summer when climatic conditions are favourable and food is abundant. Similar to other mammals, food requirements of female bats are particularly high during pregnancy and lactation and of males during spermatogenesis. Seasonal changes in energy demand and reproductive condition should therefore result in different foraging activity within and between sexes. This assumption was tested on 16 adult females and 13 adult males of the Palaearctic Daubenton’s bat, Myotis daubentoni (Kuhl, 1817), that were radio-tracked during pregnancy, lactation, and post-lactation periods. Pregnant females, as hypothesized, flew significantly longer (mean: 358.9 min; 70% of the night length) than males (mean: 228.5 min; 42.4% of the night length) during spring. In contrast, nightly flight time of lactating females decreased and was significantly less than that of pregnant females, but was similar to that of males during the same period. The longest flight times of males were registered during late summer when spermatogenetic activity is high. However, there were distinct differences in the use of foraging areas between female and male Daubenton’s bats. Female bats used small, individual foraging areas during pregnancy and lactation. The pattern was reversed in females after the young had been weaned and in males after they entered spermatogenesis. Overall, the results confirmed our proposition that flight activity reflects the higher energy demand and nutrition requirements in the different reproductive periods.
