Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to review the literature on current surface modification strategies used to improve the binding efficiency of an emerging biological material, polyetheretherketone (PEEK), with bone and soft tissues. STUDY SELECTION This review was based on articles retrieved from PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect databases. The main keywords used during the search were "polyetheretherketone (PEEK)," "implant," "surface modification," "biomaterials," "bone," "osseointegration," and "soft tissue." RESULTS The suitability of PEEK surface modification strategies has been critically analyzed and summarized here. Many cell and in vivo experiments in small animals have shown that the use of advanced modification technologies with appropriate surface modification strategies can effectively improve the surface inertness of PEEK, thereby improving its binding efficiency with bone and soft tissues. CONCLUSIONS Surface modifications of PEEK have revealed new possibilities for implant treatment; however, most results are based on in vitro or short-term in vivo evaluations in small animals. To achieve a broad application of PEEK in the field of oral implantology, more in vivo experiments and long-term clinical evaluations are needed to investigate the effects of various surface modifications on the tissue integration ability of PEEK to develop an ideal implant material.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the biologic and biomechanical effects of two implant drilling protocols on the cortical bone around implants subjected to immediate loading. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 48 implants were inserted into the mandibles of six sheep following one of two drilling protocols: undersized preparation (US; n = 24) and nonundersized preparation (NUS; n = 24). Immediately after implant insertion, an abutment was placed on each implant and 36 implants were subjected to 10 sessions of dynamic vertical loads (1,500 cycles, 1 Hz) of 25 N or 50 N. Insertion torque value (ITV) was recorded at implant installation. Resonance frequency analysis (RFA) was measured at implant insertion and at each loading session. Fluorochrome was administered at day 17, and the animals were euthanized after 5 weeks. The removal torque values (RTVs) were measured, and samples underwent histomorphometric, μCT (microcomputed tomography), and fluorescence image acquisition analyses. The bone volume density (BV/TV), bone-to-implant contact (BIC), bone area fraction occupancy (BAFO), and fluorochrome stained bone surface (MS) were calculated. A linear mixed model analysis was performed, and Pearson paired correlation was calculated. RESULTS Five implants from the NUS group failed, with a mean ITV of 8.8 Ncm and an RFA value of 57. The mean ITVs for US group and NUS group were 80.5 (± 14) Ncm and 45.9 (± 25) Ncm, respectively (P < .001). No differences were noted in the RFA values from the time of implant insertion until the end of the study. No differences in RTV, BV/TV, BAFO, or MS were observed between the groups. Intense new bone formation took place in the NUS group implants that were subjected to load. CONCLUSIONS Undersized preparation of cortical bone ensured a greater BIC compared to a nonundersized preparation. Moreover, this study demonstrated that immediate loading did not interfere with the osseointegration process, but loading induced intense new bone formation in the NUS group. It is not recommended to immediately load the implants when the clinically perceived primary stability is lower than an ITV of 10 Ncm and an RFA value of 60. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate whether salivary contamination during placement of implants with different surface characteristics affects osseointegration in native and in augmented bone areas. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty eight implants with machined surface (MS) and 48 implants with moderately rough surface (RS) were tested in the calvaria of 12 sheep. At the first surgery, 64 bony critical defects were randomly created and were subsequently augmented with two materials (autogenous or bovine bone). After 5 weeks of graft healing, 8 implants were placed per sheep, in native bone and in the centre of the augmented defects. Forty eight implants were soaked with saliva before placement (contaminated group [CG]), while 48 implants were not (non-contaminated group [NCG]). Five weeks after implant placement, bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and bone material area fraction occupancy (BMAFO) were calculated histomorphometrically. RESULTS Saliva contamination showed a significant negative effect (p = .000) on BIC, especially in augmented areas. RS showed significant positive effect on BIC, compared to MS (p = .000), while there were no significant differences for different bone conditions (p = .103). For BMAFO, the contamination showed a significantly negative affect (p = .000), while there were no significant differences for surface characteristics (p = .322) and for bone condition (p = .538). CONCLUSION Saliva contamination during dental implant placement has a negative effect on osseointegration in augmented areas. Moderately rough surface has a possible advantage in the aspect of initial bone to implant contact. However, it seems to be advisable to avoid saliva contamination especially for implants placed in augmented bone areas.

Abstract
PURPOSE There is no clinical consensus to determine the right balance between underpreparation and marginal bone level changes. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-regression was to investigate the influence of the type of drilling preparation of the implant site in relation to the bone mineral density on the clinical success, expressed in terms of the MBL and implant failure rate. STUDY SELECTION A thorough search was performed using the digital databases MEDLINE PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials by entering research lines or various combinations of free words. The main keywords used were "dental implants", "bone density", and "torque". RESULTS The mean bone resorption in the conventional preparation group was -0.43 (± 0.28) mm, whereas it was -0.80 (± 0.37) mm in the underprepared group. For the D1/D2/D3 bone group, the slope was significantly different from zero and linearity; the D4 bone group slope was not significantly different from zero and was almost parallel, although it was significantly different from linearity. The box and whiskers plot shows that the MBL in underprepared sites tended to be significantly higher with a higher variation than that in conventionally prepared sites. CONCLUSIONS Within its limits, our meta-regression analysis showed that MBL is influenced by the type of drilling preparation and bone mineral density. In particular, a lower MBL was observed in the D1 bone with conventional preparation than with underpreparation. Moreover, a greater implant-to-osteotomy site mismatch was positively associated with greater MBLs in the bone densities of D1/D2/D3.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Accumulating evidence have shown a significant correlation between urinary volatile organic compounds (VOCs) profile and the manifestation of several physiological and pathological states, including liver diseases. Previous studies have investigated the urinary metabolic signature as a non-invasive tool for the early discrimination between non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which nowadays represents one of the most important challenges in this context, feasible only by carrying out liver biopsy. OBJECTIVES The aim of the study was to investigate the differences in the urinary VOCs profiles of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients, diabetes mellitus (T2DM) subjects and NAFLD/T2DM patients. METHODS Headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was applied to profile the urinary VOCs. Urine samples were analysed both under acid and alkaline conditions, to obtain a range of urinary volatiles with different physicochemical properties. RESULTS Urinary VOCs profiles of 13 NAFLD patients, 13 T2DM subjects and 13 NAFLD/T2DM patients were investigated by multivariate and univariate data analysis techniques which allowed to identify 21 volatiles under alkaline conditions able to describe the NAFLD/T2DM group concerning the other two groups. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that VOCs signatures can improve the knowledge of the pathological condition where NAFLD coexists with T2DM and discovering new features that are not simply the sum of the two diseases. These preliminary findings may be considered as hypothesis-generating, to be clearly confirmed by larger prospective investigations.

Abstract
Implant therapy for tooth loss in the molar area is challenging due to the anatomical limitations, requiring bone augmentation procedures that are associated with high surgical complexity and long postsurgical recovery. Recently, many studies have demonstrated the usefulness of short implants. However, few studies have been performed in Japanese patients to evaluate peri-implant bone changes, changes in peri-implant epithelial tissue, and patient satisfaction. The present study included 16 patients (5 men, 11 women; mean age: 60 years) who received 26 short (6-mm) implants. Changes in peri-implant bone and epithelial tissue were measured radiographically at superstructure loading and after 2 years. Peri-implant pocket probing depth was measured at the epithelial tissue and compared at both time points. Patient satisfaction was graded using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) before treatment and at follow-up. The mean mesial and distal bone levels were -0.05 mm and 0.37 mm at loading, respectively, and were 0.33 mm and 0.53 mm after 2 years, respectively. Significant peri-implant bone formation for mesial and distal bone levels at both time points were determined by Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Mean probing depth increased slightly, from 3.03 mm at loading to 3.33 mm after 2 years, but no significant difference was found. The OHIP-14 found that patient satisfaction levels increased after 2 years. Using 6-mm short implants in sites with insufficient bone levels can be a highly beneficial treatment option for patients, as it avoids the need for bone augmentation. However, more long-term and detailed studies on the clinical outcomes for these implants are required.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This randomised controlled trial compares the 3-year outcomes, that is, marginal bone-level (MBL) changes and clinical parameters, between an abutment-level (AL) and implant-level (IL) connection for implants with an internal conical connection (ICC) supporting a screw-retained fixed partial denture. MATERIAL AND METHODS Fifty patients with 119 implants were randomly allocated to either the AL or IL group. Radiographic and clinical examinations were performed after one, two, and 3 years. A linear mixed model was used to evaluate the differences between groups. RESULTS The MBL change was not significantly different between the groups at any point. The MBL was 0.12 ± 0.31 mm (AL) and 0.23 ± 0.26 mm (IL) after 1 year; 0.15 ± 0.34 mm (AL) and 0.17 ± 0.22 mm (IL) after 2 years; 0.18 ± 0.39 mm (AL) and 0.15 ± 0.21 mm (IL) after 3 years. The bleeding on probing was 43.44 ± 39.24% (AL) and 58.19 ± 41.20% (IL) after 1 year; 35.78 ± 39.22% (AL) and 50.43 ± 41.49% (IL) after 2 years; 51.27 ± 44.63% (AL) and 49.57 ± 37.31% (IL) after 3 years and was significantly different (p = .025) between 1 and 2 years. The probing depth showed a significant difference at each time point while the plaque was not significant between the groups. The overall technical, biological and prosthetic complication rates were 5.04%, 3.36%, and 16.00%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The MBL change was similar in the groups. The slight differences in the soft tissue complications between the groups are likely not of clinical relevance. An IL connection is considered to be a valid alternative to an AL set-up in ICC implants.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of surface hydrophilicity on the biomechanical aspects of osseointegration of dental implants in the tibia and femur of rabbits. Forty-eight mature female New Zealand White rabbits were included, and 96 commercially pure, Grade 4, titanium dental implants (control group), and 96 implants of same macro geometry with the hydrophilic surface (test group) were used in this study. One osteotomy was performed in each tibia and femur on both sides of the rabbit, and four implants were placed in each rabbit. Control and test groups were randomly allocated on the left and right sides. During surgery, insertion torque (ITQ) value of the complete implant placement was recorded. After healing periods of 0, 2, 4, and 8 weeks after surgery, implant stability quotient (ISQ) value, and removal torque (RTQ) values were measured. No statistical difference was observed for ITQ, for ISQ and for RTQ between the control group and test group in tibia/femur for all time periods. The effect of hydrophilic properties on moderately roughened surfaces has no impact in terms of biomechanical outcomes (ISQ values and RTQ values) after a healing period of 2 to 8 weeks in rabbit tibias /femurs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This RCT compares marginal bone level (MBL) change and the clinical parameters after a 3-year function in maxillary implant-supported fixed complete dentures (FCDs) treated with four-implants (4-I) or six-implants (6-I). MATERIAL AND METHOD Three centres treated 56 patients with 280 implants allocated to the 4-I or 6-I group. Radiographic and clinical examinations were performed. The primary outcome was to investigate MBL change between the groups. RESULTS Implant survival rates were 100% and 99% in the 4-I and 6-I groups, respectively. Considering the clustering effects, the MBL change was not significantly different between the groups over the 3-year follow-up. The MBL in the 4-I group was 0.30 ± 0.50 mm at baseline, 0.24 ± 0.31 mm at 1 year and 0.24 ± 0.38 mm at 3 years. In the 6-I group, MBL was 0.14 ± 0.32 mm at baseline, 0.16 ± 0.35 mm at 1 year and 0.12 ± 0.26 mm at 3 years. There was a statistically significant difference between the groups at BL and 3Y. No significant differences between the groups were reported for clinical parameters at each time point as well as in between the visits. The technical and biological complications rates were 1.6% and 6.0%, respectively. Prosthetic complications affected 25 FCDs (47.2%). CONCLUSION Marginal bone level change revealed a stable condition in the 3-year period in the two groups. Few technical and biological complications occurred apart from the chipping/fracture of the prosthetic teeth. Four-implant is a feasible solution if the rehabilitation is oriented towards the most cost-effective treatment and towards avoiding bone augmentation procedures. Clinicians have to consider the potential required visits for prosthetic maintenance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is limited information on the effect of the connection between subcrestally placed implants and abutments on marginal bone levels. The aim of the present retrospective study was to evaluate marginal bone levels after definitive prosthesis delivery around implants with an internal 5° conical connection placed in a subcrestal position. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients treated with fixed prostheses supported by implants placed at a subcrestal level between 2012 and 2018 were recalled for a follow-up examination. All implants had 5° internal conical connection with platform switching. Radiographic marginal bone level (MBL) was measured. MBL change between prosthetic delivery (t0) and follow-up examination (t1) was calculated. A multiple regression model was performed to identify the most significant predictors on MBL change. RESULTS Ninety-three patients and 410 implants, with a mean follow-up of 2.72 ± 1.31 years, were examined. Mean MBL was -1.09 ± 0.65 mm and -1.00 ± 0.37 mm at t0 and t1, respectively, with a mean bone remodeling of 0.09 ± 0.68 mm. An implant's vertical position in relation to the bone crest, the year of follow up and the presence of type-2 controlled diabetes were demonstrated to be influencing factors for MBL modifications. CONCLUSIONS Subcrestally placed implants with platform switching and internal conical connection maintained stable bone levels over a mean follow-up of more than 2 years. How a tight internal conical connection between abutment and implant may contribute to this clinical evidence should be more deeply investigated. MBL variations seem to be mostly influenced by an implant's vertical position and presence of type-2 controlled diabetes.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of bone quality, drilling technique, implant diameter, and implant length on insertion torque (IT) and resonance frequency analysis (RFA) of a prototype-tapered implant with knife-edge threads. The investigators hypothesized that IT would be affected by variations in bone quality and drilling protocol, whereas RFA would be less influenced by such variables. The investigators implemented an in vitro experiment in which a prototype implant was inserted with different testing conditions into rigid polyurethane foam blocks. The independent variables were: bone quality, drilling protocol, implant diameter, and implant length. Group A implants were inserted with a conventional drilling protocol, whereas Group B implants were inserted with an undersized drilling protocol. Values of IT and RFA were measured at implant installation. IT and RFA values were significantly correlated (Pearson correlation coefficient: 0.54). A multivariable analysis showed a strong model. Higher IT values were associated with drilling protocol B vs A (mean difference: 71.7 Ncm), implant length (3.6 Ncm increase per mm in length), and substrate density (0.199 Ncm increase per mg/cm3 in density). Higher RFA values were associated with drilling protocol B vs A (mean difference: 3.9), implant length (1.0 increase per mm in length), and substrate density (0.032 increase per mg/cm3 in density). Implant diameter was not associated with RFA or IT. Within the limitations of an in vitro study, the results of this study suggest that the studied implant can achieve good level of primary stability in terms of IT and RFA. A strong correlation was found between values of IT and RFA. Both parameters are influenced by the drilling protocol, implant length, and substrate density. Further studies are required to investigate the clinical response in primary stability and marginal bone response.

Abstract
Our aim was to investigate the possible impact of contamination with saliva on osseointegration during placement of implants with simultaneous bone augmentation. Six hemispheric shape bone defects (8mm in diameter×4mm deep) were prepared in each iliac bone of six sheep. A dental implant (2.9mm in diameter×10mm long) was placed in the centre of each defect, and then pairs of defects were filled with one of the following bone augmentation materials: autogenous bone, autogenous bone plus bovine bone, or resorbable biphasic ceramic bone substitute. One site in each augmentation group was impregnated with saliva (contaminated group), while the other was not (non-contaminated group). Bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and bone area fraction occupancy (BAFO) within implant threads were measured after a healing period of five weeks, both in respect of the implant inserted in the augmented bone and in that inserted in the residual bone. Overall results showed that there was a significant difference between the contaminated and non-contaminated group for BIC in the augmented implant (p=0.028), while there were no significant differences in the implant in residual bone (p=0.722). For BAFO, there were no significant differences between the contaminated and non-contaminated groups among the different augmentation materials. The results showed that contamination with saliva during placement of an implant with simultaneous bone augmentation had a serious deleterious effect on osseointegration of the aspect of the implant within the augmented defect. Contamination with saliva during placement of an implant with simultaneous bone augmentation should therefore be avoided.

Abstract
Background: The intraosseous temperature during implant installation has never been evaluated in an in vivo controlled setup. The aims were to investigate the influence of a drilling protocol and implant surface on the intraosseous temperature during implant installation, to evaluate the influence of temperature increase on osseointegration and to calculate the heat distribution in cortical bone. Methods: Forty Brånemark implants were installed into the metatarsal bone of Finnish Dorset crossbred sheep according to two different drilling protocols (undersized/non-undersized) and two surfaces (moderately rough/turned). The intraosseous temperature was recorded, and Finite Element Model (FEM) was generated to understand the thermal behavior. Non-decalcified histology was carried out after five weeks of healing. The following osseointegration parameters were calculated: Bone-to-implant contact (BIC), Bone Area Fraction Occupancy (BAFO), and Bone Area Fraction Occupancy up to 1.5 mm (BA1.5). A multiple regression model was used to identify the influencing variables on the histomorphometric parameters. Results: The temperature was affected by the drilling protocol, while no influence was demonstrated by the implant surface. BIC was positively influenced by the undersized drilling protocol and rough surface, BAFO was negatively influenced by the temperature rise, and BA1.5 was negatively influenced by the undersized drilling protocol. FEM showed that the temperature at the implant interface might exceed the limit for bone necrosis. Conclusion: The intraosseous temperature is greatly increased by an undersized drilling protocol but not from the implant surface. The temperature increase negatively affects the bone healing in the proximity of the implant. The undersized drilling protocol for Brånemark implant systems increases the amount of bone at the interface, but it negatively impacts the bone far from the implant.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Screw-retained fixed partial dentures (FPD) have shown a lower incidence of biologic complications and an easier retrievability compared with cemented FPD. PURPOSE To compare the marginal bone loss at conical connection implant restored with a screw retained cobalt-chrome FPD in an implant-level (IL) or an abutment-level (AL) setup. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients with at least two adjacent missing teeth were randomly allocated to be restored with IL or AL FPD. Periapical radiographs and clinical examination were taken at implant placement, prosthetic connection, 6 and 12 months to evaluate marginal bone loss (MBL), and soft tissue conditions. Complications were used to calculate prognostic indexes. RESULTS Fifty patients were treated with 50 FPD supported by 119 implants. The difference of MBL between the IL and AL groups was statistically significant (P = 0.003). At 1 year, MBL was 0.086 ± 0.313 mm and 0.005 ± 0.222 mm in the IL and AL groups, respectively. The presence of BoP increased with time in IL, whereas it decreased in AL group (P < 0.001). A minor complication was encounted in one FPD. CONCLUSIONS A low grade of MBL was present after 1 year. IL showed greater amount of MBL and soft tissue inflammation indexes than AL. In FPD, AL may be a safer procedure than IL setup in order to preserve a healthy periimplant tissue.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Magnesium has a key role in osteoporosis and could enhance implant osseointegration in osteoporotic patients. Titanium implants impregnated with Mg ions were installed in the tibia of ovariectomized rats. The release of Mg induced a significant increase of bone formation and the expression of anabolic markers in the peri-implant bone. INTRODUCTION The success of endosseous implants is highly predictable in patients possessing normal bone status, but it may be impaired in patients with osteoporosis. Thus, the application of strategies that adjuvate implant healing in compromized sites is of great interest. Magnesium has a key role in osteoporosis prevention and it is an interesting candidate for this purpose. In this study, the cellular and molecular effects of magnesium release from implants were investigated at the early healing stages of implant integration. METHODS Osteoporosis was induced in 24 female rats by means of ovariectomy and low-calcium diet. Titanium mini-screws were coated with mesoporous titania films and were loaded with magnesium (test group) or left as native (control group). The implants were inserted in the tibia and femur of the rats. One, 2 and 7 days after implantation, the implants were retrieved and histologically examined. In addition, expression of genes was evaluated in the peri-implant bone tissue at day 7 by means of quantitative polymerase chain reactions with pathway-oriented arrays. RESULTS The histological evaluation revealed that new bone formation started already during the first week of healing for both groups. However, around the test implants, new bone was significantly more abundant and spread along a larger surface of the implants. In addition, the release of magnesium induced a significantly higher expression of BMP6. CONCLUSIONS These results provide evidence that the release of magnesium promoted rapid bone formation and the activation of osteogenic signals in the vicinity of implants placed in osteoporotic bone.

Abstract
Nowadays, dental implantology is a reliable technique for treatment of partially and completely edentulous patients. The achievement of stable dentition is ensured by implant-supported fixed dental prostheses. Morse taper conometric system may provide fixed retention between implants and dental prostheses. The aim of this study was to investigate retentive performance and mechanical strength of a Morse taper conometric system used as implant-supported fixed dental prostheses retention. Experimental and finite element investigations were performed. Experimental tests were achieved on a specific abutment-coping system, accounting for both cemented and non-cemented situations. The results from the experimental activities were processed to identify the mechanical behavior of the coping-abutment interface. Finally, the achieved information was applied to develop reliable finite element models of different abutment-coping systems. The analyses were developed accounting for different geometrical conformations of the abutment-coping system, such as different taper angle. The results showed that activation process, occurred through a suitable insertion force, could provide retentive performances equal to a cemented system without compromising the mechanical functionality of the system. These findings suggest that Morse taper conometrical system can provide a fixed connection between implants and dental prostheses if proper insertion force is applied. Activation process does not compromise the mechanical functionality of the system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Asthma is a heterogeneous disease and its different phenotypes need to be better characterized from a biochemical-inflammatory standpoint. This study aimed to apply the metabolomic approach to exhaled breath condensate (breathomics) to discriminate different asthma phenotypes, with a particular focus on severe asthma in children. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, we recruited 42 asthmatic children (age, 8-17 years): 31 with nonsevere asthma (treated with inhaled steroids or not) and 11 with severe asthma. Fifteen healthy children were enrolled as controls. Children performed exhaled nitric oxide measurement, spirometry, exhaled breath condensate (EBC) collection. Condensate samples were analyzed using a metabolomic approach based on mass spectrometry. RESULTS A robust Bidirectional-Orthogonal Projections to Latent Structures-Discriminant Analysis (O2PLS-DA) model was found for discriminating both between severe asthma cases and healthy controls (R(2) = 0.93; Q(2) = 0.75) and between severe asthma and nonsevere asthma (R(2) = 0.84; Q(2) = 0.47). The metabolomic data analysis leads to a robust model also when the 3 groups of children were considered altogether (K = 0.80), indicating that each group is characterized by a specific metabolomic profile. Compounds related to retinoic acid, adenosine and vitamin D (Human Metabolome Database) were relevant for the discrimination between groups. CONCLUSION The metabolomic profiling of EBC could clearly distinguish different biochemical-metabolic profiles in asthmatic children and enabled the severe asthma phenotype to be fully discriminated. The breathomics approach may therefore be suitable for discriminating between different asthma metabolic phenotypes.

Abstract
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is nowadays largely used as valid tool in metabolomic applications. In this study, the metabolite content of Italian and Chinese tomato paste at different concentration rates of two production years (2007 and 2008) was investigated with the aim of building a robust geographical differentiation statistical model. A total of 119 tomato paste samples were analyzed by (1)H NMR and multivariate data analysis tools, in particular using bidirectional orthogonal projection to latent structures-discriminant analysis (O2PLS-DA). This technique is well-suited for noisy and correlated variables and was recently adopted to obtain robust classification models, having a clear interpretation of the systematic variation useful to characterize each class. In the present study, the analysis of latent space underlying the classification model allowed us to understand the role played by the production year on geographical discrimination. The O2PLS-DA model performed considering only tomato paste samples of 2007 was capable of predicting the geographical origin of all analyzed samples. The effect of the production year therefore resulted in not affecting the geographical origin discrimination.

Abstract
(1)H NMR spectroscopy was applied to discriminate triple concentrated tomato paste coming from two different countries. Notwithstanding different tomato cultivars and ripening stages employed to obtain the final product, significant discrimination between Italian and Chinese samples was obtained by combining NMR data and principal component analysis. Supervised orthogonal projection to latent structure discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) technique was used to build robust classification models, while S-plot was employed to identify statistically significant variables responsible for class separation. Citrate content resulted in being the most relevant chemical compound for Chinese and Italian sample differentiation. In order to highlight other compounds able to contribute to sample differentiation, citrate content was excluded, and a new classification model was built. This latter model indicated aspartate, glutamine, and sugars as important variables in sample differentiation.

Abstract
This paper reports a theory for the dielectric relaxation of dimeric mesogenic molecules in a nematic liquid crystal phase. Liquid crystal dimers consist of two mesogenic groups linked by a flexible chain. Recent experimental studies [D. A. Dunmur, G. R. Luckhurst, M. R. de la Fuente, S. Diez, and M. A. Perez Jubindo, J. Chem. Phys. 115, 8681 (2001)] of the dielectric properties of polar liquid crystal dimers have found unexpected results for both the static (low frequency) and variable frequency dielectric response of these materials. The theory developed in this paper provides a quantitative model with which to understand the observed experimental results. The mean-square dipole moments of alpha,omega-bis[(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yl]alkanes in a nematic phase have been calculated using both the rotational isomeric state model and a full torsional potential for the carbon-carbon bonds of the flexible chain. The orienting effect of the nematic phase is taken into account by a parametrized potential of mean torque acting on the mesogenic groups and the segments in the flexible chain. Results of calculations using the full torsional potential are in excellent agreement with experimental results for comparable systems. The probability density p(eq)(beta(A),beta(B)) for the orientation of the mesogenic groups (A,B) along the nematic director is also calculated. The resultant potential of mean torque is a surface characterized by four deep energy wells or sites equivalent to alignment of the terminal groups A and B approximately parallel and antiparallel to the director; of course, the reversal of the director leads to equivalent sites. This potential energy surface provides the basis for a kinetic model of dielectric relaxation in nematic dimers. Solution of the Fokker-Planck equation corresponding to this four-site model gives the time dependence of the site populations, and hence the time-correlation functions for the total dipole moment along the director. In this model the end-over-end rotation of the molecule, corresponding to simultaneous reversal of both mesogenic groups, is excluded because the activation energy is too large. Results are presented for a number of cases, in which a dipole is located on one or both of the mesogenic groups, and additionally where the groups differ in size. For the latter, under particular conditions, the correlation function exhibits a biexponential decay, which corresponds to two low frequency absorptions in the dielectric spectrum. This is exactly what has been observed for nonsymmetric nematic dimers having different groups terminating a flexible chain. Experimental results over a range of temperature for the nonsymmetric dimer alpha-[(4-cyanobiphenyl)-4'-yloxy]-omega-(4-decylanilinebenzylidene-4'-oxy)nonane can be fitted precisely to the theory, which provides new insight into the orientational and conformational dynamics of molecules in ordered liquid crystalline phases.
