Abstract
Microorganisms resist fluoride toxicity using fluoride export proteins from one of several different molecular families. Cariogenic species Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans extrude intracellular fluoride using a CLCF F-/H+ antiporter and FEX fluoride channel, respectively, whereas oral commensal eubacteria, such as Streptococcus gordonii, export fluoride using a Fluc fluoride channel. In this work, we examine how genetic knockout of fluoride export impacts pathogen fitness in single-species and three-species dental biofilm models. For biofilms generated using S. mutans with the genetic knockout of the CLCF transporter, exposure to low fluoride concentrations decreased S. mutans counts, synergistically reduced the populations of C. albicans, increased the relative proportion of oral commensal S. gordonii, and reduced properties associated with biofilm pathogenicity, including acid production and hydroxyapatite dissolution. Biofilms prepared with C. albicans with genetic knockout of the FEX channel also exhibited reduced fitness in the presence of fluoride but to a lesser degree. Imaging studies indicate that S. mutans is highly sensitive to fluoride, with the knockout strain undergoing complete lysis when exposed to low fluoride for a moderate amount of time. Biochemical purification of the S. mutans CLCF transporter and functional reconstitution establishes that the functional protein is a dimer encoded by a single gene. Together, these findings suggest that fluoride export by oral pathogens can be targeted by specific inhibitors to restore biofilm symbiosis in dental biofilms and that S. mutans is especially susceptible to fluoride toxicity. IMPORTANCE Dental caries is a globally prevalent condition that occurs when pathogenic species, including Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans, outcompete beneficial species, such as Streptococcus gordonii, in the dental biofilm. Fluoride is routinely used in oral hygiene to prevent dental caries. Fluoride also has antimicrobial properties, although most microbes possess fluoride exporters to resist its toxicity. This work shows that sensitization of cariogenic species S. mutans and C. albicans to fluoride by genetic knockout of fluoride exporters alters the microbial composition and pathogenic properties of dental biofilms. These results suggest that the development of drugs that inhibit fluoride exporters could potentiate the anticaries effect of fluoride in over-the-counter products like toothpaste and mouth rinses. This is a novel strategy to treat dental caries.

Abstract
Fluoride (F-) export proteins, including F- channels and F- transporters, are widespread in biology. They contribute to cellular resistance against fluoride ion, which has relevance as an ancient xenobiotic, and in more modern contexts like organofluorine biosynthesis and degradation or dental medicine. This chapter summarizes quantitative methods to measure fluoride transport across membranes using fluoride-specific lanthanum-fluoride electrodes. Electrode-based measurements can be used to measure unitary fluoride transport rates by membrane proteins that have been purified and reconstituted into lipid vesicles, or to monitor fluoride efflux into living microbial cells. Thus, fluoride electrode-based measurements yield quantitative mechanistic insight into one of the major determinants of fluoride resistance in microorganisms, fungi, yeasts, and plants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) exhibit deficits in static and dynamic balance abilities and maladaptive functions. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of dance movement therapy (DMT) group intervention in individuals with DS. METHODS The 31 participating individuals with DS, aged 5-29 years, were randomly divided into intervention (n = 16) and control (n = 15) groups. Posturography was used for static balance measurement, timed up and go test for dynamic balance measurement and the Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA) questionnaire for adaptive function and behavioural problem measurement in participants before and after the DMT interventions. The intervention group underwent 60-min DMT intervention once a week for 10 times, while the control group had usual daily activities. RESULTS The results revealed a statistically significant difference and large effect sizes in dynamic balance [(f(1, 29) = 4.52, P = 0.04, ηp 2 = 0.14)] in the intervention group compared with the control group. There were no statistically significant differences in static balance and ASEBA scores between the groups. CONCLUSIONS This study found that the DMT interventions helped to improve the dynamic balance in individuals with DS.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the efficacy of 0.01% atropine to slow the progression of myopia in children. METHODS We searched PubMed, Embase, ClinicalTrials.gov, CNKI, Cqvip and Wan fang databases from inception to January 2022, including RCTs (randomized controlled trials) and non-RCTs (non-randomized controlled trials). The search strategy was 'myopia' OR 'refractive error' and 'atropine.' Two researchers independently reviewed the articles, and stata12.0 was used for meta-analysis. The Jadad score was used to assess the quality of RCT, and the Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used for non-RCTs. RESULTS Five RCTs and two non-RCTs (1 prospective non-randomized controlled study, 1 retrospective cohort study) were identified (including 1000 eyes). Results of the meta-analysis showed statistical heterogeneity among the 7 included studies (P=0. 026, I2 =47.1%). According to different durations of atropine use - 4 months, 6 months and greater than 8 months, subgroup analysis results showed that the axial elongation of all experimental groups relative to control groups were respectively -0.03mm (95% [CI], (confidence interval), -0.07 to 0.01), -0.07mm (95% [CI], -0.10 to -0.05), -0.09mm (95% [CI], -0.12 to -0.06). Each P was greater than 0.05, which indicated that there is little heterogeneity among the subgroups. CONCLUSIONS In this meta-analysis of the short-term efficacy of atropine in myopia patients, it was found that there was little heterogeneity when grouped by usage time. It is suggested that the use of atropine in the treatment of myopia is not only related to its concentration but also related to the duration of use.

Abstract
Piglet mortality is an economically important complex trait that impacts sow prolificacy. Genetic analyses for piglet mortality at weaning have been reported in dozens of studies, but not for piglet mortality at birth. In this study, we used multi-breed data sets from Yorkshire, Landrace, and Duroc sows to characterize the genetic fundamentals of piglet mortality at birth. The heritabilities from parity I to III were estimated to be 0.0630, 0.1031, and 0.1140 respectively. By using a combined strategy, a total of 21 SNPs were detected in three parities, of which six were observed in parity I, five in parity II and 10 in parity III. Genome annotation revealed that these SNPs were harbored within or close to 19 candidate genes. The candidate genes were found to associate with the reproductive system and embryonic development in the tissue expression database, which are reasonably related to piglet mortality. These findings are expected to provide much information for understanding the genetic and genomic fundamentals of farrowing mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Modulating the DNA damage response and repair (DDR) pathways is a promising strategy for boosting cancer immunotherapy. Ceralasertib (AZD6738) is an oral inhibitor of the serine/threonine protein kinase ataxia telangiectasia and Rad3-related protein, which is crucial for DDR. PATIENTS AND METHODS This phase II trial evaluated ceralasertib plus durvalumab for the treatment of patients with metastatic melanoma who had failed anti-programmed cell death protein 1 therapy. RESULTS Among the 30 patients, we observed an overall response rate of 31.0% and a disease control rate of 63.3%. Responses were evident across patients with acral, mucosal, and cutaneous melanoma. The median duration of response was 8.8 months (range, 3.8-11.7 months). The median progression-free survival was 7.1 months (95% confidence interval, 3.6-10.6 months), and the median overall survival was 14.2 months (95% confidence interval, 9.3-19.1 months). Common adverse events were largely hematologic and manageable with dose interruptions and reductions. Exploratory biomarker analysis suggested that tumors with an immune-enriched microenvironment or alterations in the DDR pathway were more likely to respond to the study treatment. CONCLUSION We conclude that ceralasertib in combination with durvalumab has promising antitumor activity among patients with metastatic melanoma who have failed anti-programmed cell death protein 1 therapy, and constitute a population with unmet needs.

Abstract
Tertiary lymphoid structure (TLS) provides a local and critical microenvironment for both cellular and humoral immunity and supports effective antigen presentation and lymphocyte activation. However, the gene expression profile and prognostic significance of TLS in oral cancer remain largely unrevealed. In this study, we found the presence of both intratumoral and peritumoral TLSs in a series of 65 patients with oral cancer treated by surgical resection, with positive detection rates of 33.8 and 75.4%, respectively. The presence of intratumoral TLSs, but not peritumoral TLSs, was significantly associated with decreased P53 and Ki67 scores (P = 0·027 and 0·047, respectively). The survival analyses revealed that oral cancer patients with higher grades of TLSs was associated with improved disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) (P = 0·037 and 0·031, respectively). Gene expression profiling analysis of the cytokines and chemokines responsible for lymph-node neogenesis identified a three-up-regulated-gene set, i.e. IL7, LTB and CXCL13, which was shown to be correlated with human oral cancer-associated TLSs. This study provides a framework for better understanding of oral cancer-associated TLSs and for delineating future innovative prognostic biomarkers and immune therapeutic strategies for oral cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The measure of processes of care (MPOC) is a widely used instrument to assess parents' perception of the extent to which healthcare services they and their child receive are family centred. The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the Korean translation of the MPOC (Korean MPOC). METHODS The Korean MPOC was completed by 198 parents of children receiving rehabilitation services in five provinces in South Korea. According to the Canadian validation procedures, analyses for internal consistency, construct and concurrent validity, and test-retest reliability were performed. RESULTS The Korean MPOC demonstrated adequate internal consistency, with Cronbach's alpha ranging from .85 to .98. Confirmative analyses of the scale structure support the construct validity of the Korean MPOC. The Pearson correlations r between the MPOC scale scores and Client Satisfaction Inventory score ranged from .60 to .83, supporting the concurrent validity of the Korean MPOC. The intraclass correlation coefficients were greater than .80 for all five scales, demonstrating good test-retest reliability. CONCLUSIONS The Korean MPOC has good psychological properties and can be recommended for evaluation of processes of paediatric rehabilitation in Korea.

Abstract
The measurement of two-particle angular correlations is a powerful tool to study jet quenching in a p_{T} region inaccessible by direct jet identification. In these measurements pseudorapidity (Δη) and azimuthal (Δφ) differences are used to extract the shape of the near-side peak formed by particles associated with a higher p_{T} trigger particle (1<p_{T,trig}<8 GeV/c). A combined fit of the near-side peak and long-range correlations is applied to the data allowing the extraction of the centrality evolution of the peak shape in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV. A significant broadening of the peak in the Δη direction at low p_{T} is found from peripheral to central collisions, which vanishes above 4 GeV/c, while in the Δφ direction the peak is almost independent of centrality. For the 10% most central collisions and 1<p_{T,assoc}<2 GeV/c, 1<p_{T,trig}<3 GeV/c a novel feature is observed: a depletion develops around the center of the peak. The results are compared to pp collisions at the same center of mass energy and ampt model simulations. The comparison to the investigated models suggests that the broadening and the development of the depletion is connected to the strength of radial and longitudinal flow.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Strength of Motivation for Medical School-Revised (SMMS-R) questionnaire measures students' motivation for studying medicine. It includes three subscales: 'willingness to sacrifice', 'readiness to start', and 'persistence'. Measurement invariance is a prerequisite for group comparisons. The objectives of this study were to verify the factorial structure of the SMMS-R questionnaire and to investigate it's measurement invariance. METHODS A total of 989 medical students were approached, 930 cases were kept for data analysis. Factorial structure of and measurement invariance of the SMMS-R were tested using single and multiple group confirmatory factor analyses with Mplus. Trational Cronbach's α along with McDonald's ω and glb were used to measure internal consistency for each subscale. RESULTS Internal consistency for subscales and the full instrument were within the acceptable range. A 3-factor structure of the Chinese version of the SMMS-R was supported. Full configural, metric and partial scalar invariance were obtained. CONCLUSIONS The SMMS-R showed measurement invariance across gender and two independent samples. So it can be used for group and cross-cultural comparisons.

Abstract
We present results on transverse momentum ([Formula: see text]) and rapidity ([Formula: see text]) differential production cross sections, mean transverse momentum and mean transverse momentum square of inclusive [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] at forward rapidity ([Formula: see text]) as well as [Formula: see text]-to-[Formula: see text] cross section ratios. These quantities are measured in pp collisions at center of mass energies [Formula: see text] and 13 TeV with the ALICE detector. Both charmonium states are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel, using the muon spectrometer. A comprehensive comparison to inclusive charmonium cross sections measured at [Formula: see text], 7 and 8 TeV is performed. A comparison to non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics and fixed-order next-to-leading logarithm calculations, which describe prompt and non-prompt charmonium production respectively, is also presented. A good description of the data is obtained over the full [Formula: see text] range, provided that both contributions are summed. In particular, it is found that for [Formula: see text] GeV/c the non-prompt contribution reaches up to 50% of the total charmonium yield.

Abstract
The transverse momentum distributions of the strange and double-strange hyperon resonances (Σ ( 1385 ) ± , Ξ ( 1530 ) 0 ) produced in p-Pb collisions at s NN = 5.02 TeV were measured in the rapidity range - 0.5 < y CMS < 0 for event classes corresponding to different charged-particle multiplicity densities, ⟨ dN ch /dη lab ⟩ . The mean transverse momentum values are presented as a function of ⟨ dN ch /dη lab ⟩ , as well as a function of the particle masses and compared with previous results on hyperon production. The integrated yield ratios of excited to ground-state hyperons are constant as a function of ⟨ dN ch /dη lab ⟩ . The equivalent ratios to pions exhibit an increase with ⟨ dN ch /dη lab ⟩ , depending on their strangeness content.

Abstract
The invariant differential cross sections for inclusive [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] mesons at midrapidity were measured in pp collisions at [Formula: see text] TeV for transverse momenta [Formula: see text] GeV/c and [Formula: see text] GeV/c, respectively, using the ALICE detector. This large range in [Formula: see text] was achieved by combining various analysis techniques and different triggers involving the electromagnetic calorimeter (EMCal). In particular, a new single-cluster, shower-shape based method was developed for the identification of high-[Formula: see text] neutral pions, which exploits that the showers originating from their decay photons overlap in the EMCal. Above 4 GeV/[Formula: see text], the measured cross sections are found to exhibit a similar power-law behavior with an exponent of about 6.3. Next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations differ from the measured cross sections by about 30% for the [Formula: see text], and between 30-50% for the [Formula: see text] meson, while generator-level simulations with PYTHIA 8.2 describe the data to better than 10-30%, except at [Formula: see text] GeV/[Formula: see text]. The new data can therefore be used to further improve the theoretical description of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] meson production.

Abstract
Although many epidemiology studies have evaluated the correlation between vitamin D receptor (VDR) BsmI polymorphism and osteoporosis, the current results remain inconclusive. This meta-analysis updated and reevaluated the possible association between VDR BsmI polymorphism and osteoporosis in Chinese populations. Studies were identified using PubMed and Chinese databases through December 2016. The associations were assessed with pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). A total of nine studies with 688 osteoporosis cases and 730 controls were included in this meta-analysis. Overall, no significant association was found between VDR BsmI polymorphism and osteoporosis when all studies in Chinese populations were pooled into this meta-analysis. In subgroup analyses, significantly decreased risk was found in South China (bb vs. BB: OR = 0.22, 95% CI = 0.06-0.76; bb+Bb vs.BB: OR = 0.27, 95% CI = 0.09-0.81). This meta-analysis suggests that VDR BsmI polymorphism may have a protective role against the development of osteoporosis in South China.

Abstract
We present the first measurement of the two-particle transverse momentum differential correlation function, P_{2}≡⟨Δp_{T}Δp_{T}⟩/⟨p_{T}⟩^{2}, in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV. Results for P_{2} are reported as a function of the relative pseudorapidity (Δη) and azimuthal angle (Δφ) between two particles for different collision centralities. The Δϕ dependence is found to be largely independent of Δη for |Δη|≥0.9. In the 5% most central Pb-Pb collisions, the two-particle transverse momentum correlation function exhibits a clear double-hump structure around Δφ=π (i.e., on the away side), which is not observed in number correlations in the same centrality range, and thus provides an indication of the dominance of triangular flow in this collision centrality. Fourier decompositions of P_{2}, studied as a function of the collision centrality, show that correlations at |Δη|≥0.9 can be well reproduced by a flow ansatz based on the notion that measured transverse momentum correlations are strictly determined by the collective motion of the system.

Abstract
Glyphosate and glyphosate-containing herbicides have an adverse effect on mammals, humans, and soil microbial ecosystems. Therefore, it is important to develop methods for enhancing glyphosate degradation in soil through bioremediation. We investigated the potential of glyphosate degradation and bioremediation in soil by Bacillus subtilis Bs-15. Bs-15 grew well at high concentrations of glyphosate; the maximum concentration tolerated by Bs-15 reached 40,000 mg/L. The optimal conditions for bacterial growth and glyphosate degradation were less than 10,000 mg/L glyphosate, with a temperature of 35°C and a pH of 8.0. Optimal fermentation occurred at 180 rpm for 60 h with an inoculum ratio of 4%. Bs-15 degraded 17.65% (12 h) to 66.97% (96 h) of glyphosate in sterile soil and 19.01% (12 h) to 71.57% (96 h) in unsterilized soil. Using a BIOLOG ECO plate test, we observed no significant difference in average well color development values between the soil inoculated with Bs-15 and the control soil before 72 h, although there was a significant difference (P < 0.01) after 72 h. In the presence of Bs-15, the 5 functional diversity indices (Shannon index, Shannon uniformity, Simpson index, McIntosh index, and McIntosh uniformity) were greater (P < 0.01) compared with the control soil. These results indicate that Bs-15 could be used to alleviate contamination from glyphosate-containing herbicides, increasing the microbial functional diversity in glyphosate-contaminated soils and thus enhancing the bioremediation of glyphosate-contaminated soils.

Abstract
Silicon (Si) is known to have a role in constitutive plant defence against arthropod pests, and recent work has illustrated involvement in induced plant defences. The present tri-trophic study tested the hypothesis that Si increases natural enemy attraction to pest-infested plants and improves biological control. Cucumber plants treated with potassium silicate (Si+) and untreated control plants (Si-) were maintained in separately vented glasshouse compartments. Y-tube olfactometer studies showed that adult Dicranolaius bellulus were significantly more attracted to Si+ plants upon which Helicoverpa armigera larvae had fed compared with Si-, pest-infested plants. Predators were not significantly more attracted to Si+ plants when comparing uninfested cucumbers. In a field experiment, we placed H. armigera-infested and uninfested Si+ and Si- cucumber plants in a lucerne stand. Removal rates of H. armigera egg baits showed predation was greater for Si+ infested plants than for other treatments. Results suggest that Si applied to plants with a subsequent pest infestation increases the plants' attractiveness to natural enemies; an effect that was reflected in elevated biological control in the field.

Abstract
The behavior and dynamics of 20 identified allelochemicals in vulpia residues were both collectively and individually monitored, and their kinetic phytotoxicity was assessed. The total content of the identified allelochemicals in decaying vulpia residues increased from 0.31 to 1.24 mg/g dry residue over a 21-day decomposition period, while the total phenolic content increased from 1.86 to 2.16 mg/g dry residue. This corresponded to a phytotoxicity increase from 42% to 82% of radical inhibition. Allelochemicals changed in composition and quantity over the duration of the residue decomposition. Addition of soil to the residues reduced the total allelochemical contents extracted and altered the dynamic pattern. In the same period, the total content of allelochemicals declined from 0.061 to 0.046 mg/g residue + soil, with the total phenolics reduced from 0.20 to 0.11 mg/g residue + soil, corresponding to a radical length increase from 53% to 109% of control. Only 14 of the identified allelochemicals were detected in the mix of soil and residues, in contrast to 20 present in the residues alone. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract
Twenty compounds identified in vulpia (Vulpia myuros) residues as allelochemicals were individually and collectively tested for biological activity. Each exhibited characteristic allelochemical behavior toward the test plant, i.e., inhibition at high concentrations and stimulation or no effect at low concentrations, but individual activities varied. Allelopathins present in large quantities, such as syringic, vanillic, and succinic acids, possessed low activity, while those present in small quantities, such as catechol and hydrocinnamic acid, possessed strong inhibitory activity. The concept of a phytotoxic strength index was developed for quantifying the biological properties of each individual allelopathin in a concise, comprehensive, and meaningful format. The individual contribution of each allelopathin, assessed by comparing the phytotoxic strength index to the overall toxicity of vulpia residues, was variable according to structure and was influenced by its relative proportion in the residue. The majority of compounds possessed low or medium biological activity and contributed most of the vulpia phytotoxicity, while compounds with high biological activity were in the minority and only present at low concentration. Artificial mixtures of these pure allelochemicals also produced phytotoxicity. There were additive/synergistic effects evident in the properties of these mixtures. One such mixture, formulated from allelochemicals found in the same proportions as occur in vulpia extract, produced stronger activity than another formulated from the same set of compounds but in equal proportions. These results suggest that the exploration of the relative composition of a cluster of allelopathins may be more important than simply focusing on the identification of one or two compounds with strong biological activity and that synergism is fundamental to the understanding of allelopathy.

Abstract
Activated coke was used to support Fe2O3(Fe/AC) for flue gas SO2 removal. Reaction conditions on DeSOx activity were investigated. The results show that Fe/AC had higher activity than AC or Fe2O3 at temperature of 120 degrees C-250 degrees C. H2SO4 and Fe2(SO4)3 were formed after Fe/AC sorbed SO2, H2O and O2 increased the amount of SO2 adsorption. Fe/AC derived from AC of higher BET surface area had higher DeSOx activity. Fe/AC was suitable to be used at GHSV below 800 L/(kg.h).

Abstract
An analytical technique employing gas chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (GC/MS/MS) was employed to systematically screen fifty-eight wheat accessions for their differential production of 2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DIMBOA) from three consecutive sources, i.e., the shoots, roots, and in the associated agar growth medium (collected as root exudates) of 17-day-old wheat seedlings. DIMBOA content differed significantly in the shoots, roots, or in the agar growth medium between accessions. DIMBOA accumulated differentially within the plant, with roots containing more DIMBOA than the shoots. Only 19% of accessions were able to exude DIMBOA from living roots into their growth medium, indicating the exudation of DIMBOA is accession-specific. DIMBOA level in root tissues is expected to be high when a high level of DIMBOA content is detected in the shoots. Wheat seedlings did not release detectable amounts of DIMBOA when the DIMBOA level was low in the root tissues. The valuable genetic material with high levels of DIMBOA in the shoots or roots identified in the present research could be used to breed for wheat cultivars with elevated allelopathic activity.

Abstract
Analysis by GC-MS/MS showed that a worldwide collection of 58 wheat accessions differed significantly in the amounts of 7 known phenolic acids exuded by the living roots of 17-day-old wheat seedlings. The quantities of exuded allelochemicals varied with the specific compound and ranged from 2.3 to 18.6, from 0.6 to 17.5, from 0.1 to 4.9, from 0.0 to 52.7, from 0.33 to 12.7, from 1.5 to 20.5, and from 1.6 to 23.4 microg/L of water/agar for p-hydroxybenzoic, vanillic, cis-p-coumaric, syringic, cis-ferulic, trans-p-coumaric, and trans-ferulic acids, respectively. The concentrations of p-hydroxybenzoic and vanillic acids exuded by wheat seedlings were normally distributed in the 58 accessions. The level of each phenolic acid in root exudates did not correlate well to that previously observed in wheat. In comparison with weakly allelopathic accessions, strongly allelopathic accessions exuded larger quantities of allelochemicals into the growth medium. The chemical basis for wheat seedling allelopathy is an area for further investigation.

Solid-phase microextraction coupled to gas chromatography and mass spectrometry has been applied as a simple alternative method for the analysis of essential oil directly from lavender intact flowering spikes and genuine oils. All recognised major oil constituents were detected by this procedure, with results comparable to those given by a conventional method (organic solvent extraction). Distinctive chromatographic profiles were found for various species.

Abstract
Samples of an Australian oat cultivar, Echidna, were pilot-scale processed. At each stage of the processing (raw oats, groats, kiln dried dehulled oats (KDHO), and rolled (flaked)) samples were removed for later sensory and GC-MS analysis of the flavor components. Mean taste panel scores from a trained taste panel were calculated according to attributes (cereal, burnt, toasted, floury, and yeasty). Attributes were generally similar for both KDHO and flaked oats except in the yeasty attributes. Panelists were able to differentiate between groats, KDHO, and flaked oats (raw oats were not included). The largest effects of heat processing were found for the attributes toasted and yeasty aroma; toasted, cereal, and yeasty flavor; and toasted and yeasty aftertaste. A multi-organoleptic sensor analyzer was able to differentiate all samples when the output was subjected to discriminant function analysis. A reintroduced sample was recognized with a confidence level better than 96%. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of headspace followed by GC--MS was used to identify volatiles after either dry or slurry heating. Several SPME fiber types were evaluated as to their ability to sorb oat volatiles. A 100-microm poly(dimethylsiloxane) SPME fiber was found to provide the best adsorption profile as measured by number of compounds sorbed and peak area response. A range of alcohols, aldehydes, alkyl benzenes, dienes, and ketones was identified in the processed samples.

Abstract
Bench-scale fluidized-bed reactors using the immobilized activated sludge process were studied for the treatment of domestic wastewater. Different intermittent aeration patterns were investigated in order to improve the total nitrogen (TN) removal. The best TN removal at 74.4% was achieved at an HRT of 6 hours (with corresponding BOD loading rate of 0.766 kg/m3/d) and an aeration-pattern of 1,3 (the hours of aeration and non-aeration time cycle). The removal efficiencies for organic carbon, NH4(+)-N, TKN and TSS were not affected and remained at more than 90%. Simultaneous organic carbon and nitrogen removal was accomplished in a single immobilized sludge reactor. The impact of various influent feed patterns on the treatment was examined. The continuous feed pattern was recommended as it ensured good TN removal without any adverse impacts on the removal of organic carbon, NH4(+)-N, TKN and TSS. The immobilized sludge beads exhibited satisfactory mechanical stability without apparent breakage over the 180-day experiment period.

Abstract
Shikimate and other intermediates of the shikimate-chorismate pathway are densely functionalized structures that seem to offer limited options for skeletal modification. We designed and synthesized cyclopentylidenes 1 and 2, as well as cyclopentenes 3 and 4, as novel ring-contracted analogues of shikimic acid. Enzymatic studies showed that analogues 1-3 are indeed processed by shikimate kinase to give phosphates 1-P, 2-P, and 3-P as five-membered ring analogues of shikimate-3-phosphate. In particular, analogue 1 is converted by the enzyme at a rate only 3.5-fold slower than that of the native substrate, while analogue 3 binds to shikimate kinase with an apparent Km of 1.7 mM, compared to 0.14 mM for shikimate.

Abstract
Zebrafish crestin was identified in a screen for genes dependent on cyclops function and is a member of a family of retroelements (Rubinstein et al. [2000] Genesis 26:86-97). We report here a detailed description of crestin mRNA expression during zebrafish embryogenesis. Crestin expression was first observed during the onset of somitogenesis in cells of the neural crest domain of the ectoderm. Crestin expression was subsequently observed in premigratory cranial and trunk neural crest cells and then in actively migrating crest cells. Cell counts of crestin-expressing premigratory trunk neural crest cells strongly suggest that crestin is expressed by all neural crest cells at this stage. Crestin expression co-localized with a battery of markers for premigratory neural crest cells, developmentally distinct neural crest-derived precursor sublineages, and overtly differentiated neural crest-derived cell types. Expression of crestin is gradually downregulated in overtly differentiated cells. Our results indicate that crestin is a specific pan-neural crest marker throughout zebrafish embryogenesis.

Abstract
Seven known phenolic acids implicated in wheat allelopathy were analyzed in a worldwide collection of 58 wheat accessions by gas chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS-MS). Chemical analysis showed that accessions differed significantly in the production of p-hydroxybenzoic, vanillic, syringic, trans-p-coumaric, cis-p-coumaric, trans-ferulic, and cis-ferulic acids in the shoots of 17-day-old wheat seedlings. The concentrations of p-hydroxybenzoic, vanillic, cis-p-coumaric, and cis-ferulic acids were normally distributed in the 58 accessions. A binormal distribution was found for syringic and trans-ferulic acids and a skewed normal distribution for trans-p-coumaric acid. The concentration of each compound also varied with phenolic acids. The relative abundance of each phenolic acid was ordered decreasingly as trans-ferulic, vanillic, trans-p-coumaric, p-hydroxybenzoic, syringic, cis-ferulic, and cis-p-coumaric acids. The concentration of total identified phenolic acids varied from 93.2 to 453.8 mg/kg in the shoots of 58 accessions. The content of each phenolic acid or group was highly associated with others in the shoots of wheat seedlings. Wheat accessions with high levels of total identified phenolic acids in the shoots are generally strongly allelopathic to the growth of annual ryegrass.

The PVA-alginate-borate method was used successfully to immobilize activated sludge. The optimum polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) concentration in the immobilized sludge was determined to be 10-12.5%. A minimal alginate of 1% in the beads was needed to prevent bead agglomeration. If the pH of the saturated boric acid was adjusted to 7.0 prior to allowing droplets of the mixture of PVA, alginate and sludge to enter the solution, a high level of sludge activity could be maintained in the beads formed. During the continuous operation of a fluidized bed reactor, with hydraulic retention time (HRT) in the range of 24-3 h (BOD loading from 0.176 to 0.766 kg/d/m3) and an aeration rate at 1.0 L/min, more than 90% of BOD5, NH4(+)-N and TKN were removed. The immobilized sludge exhibited satisfactory mechanical stability without apparent breakage.

Abstract
Analysis by GC/MS/MS showed that a worldwide collection of 58 wheat accessions differed significantly in the production of seven phenolic acids in the roots of 17-day-old wheat seedlings. The allelochemical contents among wheat accessions ranged from 24.5 to 94.5, 19.9 to 91.7, 3.7 to 15.4, 2.2 to 38.6, 1.0 to 42.2, 19.3 to 183.6, and 11.7 to 187.6 mg/kg of root dry weight for p-hydroxybenzoic, vanillic, cis-p-coumaric, syringic, cis-ferulic, trans-p-coumaric, and trans-ferulic acids, respectively. trans-Ferulic acid was identified as the most predominant phenolic acid in the roots. Phenolic acids, with the exception of syringic acid, were more concentrated in roots than in shoots. Significant correlation was found between the roots and the shoots in the contents of vanillic, cis-p-coumaric, syringic, trans-p-coumaric, and trans-ferulic acids, and in the content of each structural group of phenolic acids. Wheat accessions with high levels of total identified phenolic acids in the roots were generally strongly allelopathic to the growth of annual ryegrass.

Abstract
During development, trunk neural crest cells give rise to three primary classes of derivatives: glial cells, melanocytes, and neurons. As part of an effort to learn how neural crest diversification is regulated, we have produced monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) that recognize antigens expressed by neural crest cells early in development. One of these, MAb 7B3 (7B3), was found to recognize an avian transitin-like protein by co-immunostaining with a series of transitin-specific monoclonal antibodies and by Western blot analysis. In neural crest cell cultures, we found that 7B3 initially recognizes the majority of neural crest cells as they emerge from the neural tube. Subsequently, 7B3-immunoreactivity (IR) is progressively restricted to a smaller subpopulation of cells. In fully differentiated trunk neural crest cell cultures, 7B3-IR is expressed only by cells that do not express neuronal markers and lack melanin granules. During development in vivo, 7B3-IR is evident in neural crest cells on the medial, but not the lateral migration pathway, suggesting that it is not expressed by melanocyte precursors. Later, the antigen is detected in non-neuronal, presumptive glial cells in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and sympathetic ganglia, as well as along ventral roots. Cultures of E5 DRG confirm that 7B3-IR is restricted to non-neuronal cells of ganglia, many of which closely associate with neuronal processes. Therefore, of the three major classes of differentiated trunk neural crest derivatives, 7B3 exclusively recognizes glial cells, including both satellite glia and Schwann cells. Since the pattern of 7B3 expression in vitro mirrors the pattern of glial cell fate-restrictions in the trunk neural crest lineage, and is expressed by neural crest-derived glia in vivo, we conclude that 7B3 is an early pan-glial marker for neural crest-derived glial cells and their precursors.

Abstract
A procedure using gas chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS-MS) has been developed for the identification and quantification of some allelochemicals in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The quantities of allelochemicals in wheat shoots ranged from 2.9 to 110 mg per kilogram of dry shoot residues. Compared with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), the GC-MS-MS technique significantly increased instrument selectivity and sensitivity, thereby providing more reliable quantitation results in the determination of the phytotoxic compounds examined during this allelopathy research.

Epirubicin and 5-FU were administered through an indwelling catheter inserted into the internal mammary artery and/or subclavian artery employing an implantable infusion port system for the treatment of unresectable advanced breast cancer and recurrent breast cancer. Intraarterial infusion chemotherapy proved to be an effective treatment modality for unresectable advanced breast cancer and recurrent breast cancer.

Abstract
Between 1990 and 1997, 227 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma were treated by intrahepatic arterial injection of a Lipiodol-Epirubicin-Mitomycin C emulsion followed by intermittent hepatic artery infusion of Epirubicin, Mitomycin C and 5-FU, employing an implantable subcutaneous infusion port. A catheter was inserted percutaneously into the hepatic artery using the Seldinger technique. Objective remission was induced in 80% of the evaluable patients as evidenced by a decrease in their AFP and PIVKA II levels. These remissions were also confirmed by liver sonogram and CT scan showing decreased tumor volume. Transcatheter oily chemoembolization combined with intermittent hepatic artery infusion chemotherapy seems to be an effective treatment for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma both for palliation of symptoms as well as prolongation of survival with good quality of life.

Abstract
Summary. The germination and seedling growth of 12 plant
species and 12 cultivars from 2 plant species were tested in the presence of
aqueous extracts of vulpia dry matter residues. Concepts of whole-range
assessment and inhibition index were developed, and used, with principal
component analysis, for assessing results. Species were grouped according to
the inhibition index. Average threshold concentration, average
I50 (the extract concentration required to cause
50% inhibition in plant response) and average root and coleoptile
lengths were used as auxillary indices for each group. Marked differences in
tolerance toward the phytotoxicity of vulpia residue extracts were observed
among species and cultivars. Such differences were widespread among plant
species, with generally cocksfoot, Vulpia spp.,
subterranean clover (cv. Trikkala), phalaris, canola, medics, and oats being
relatively tolerant, while lupins, barley, and wheat (cvv. Janz, Vulcan) were
the most susceptible, and subterranean clover (cvv. Seaton Park, Karridale,
Clare, Woogenellup, Junee), field peas, and wheat (cvv. Ford, Darter,
Dollarbird, Rosella) were relatively susceptible. The findings of this study
suggest that choice of species and cultivar may be a valuable management
option for minimising the negative effects of vulpia residues. The whole-range
assessment developed in this study proved to be a statistically efficient
summary of the plant response profiles. Together with the bioassay techniques
adopted, it provides a simple and rapid screening methodology for assessing
the relative tolerance of plant species to the allelopathic effects of weed
residues.
