Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Restricted linear growth and abnormal weight status are commonly observed among children in low-income countries, possibly due to inadequate protein intake. Considering the role of protein intake and amino acid (AA) synthesis in growth and development, it has been suggested that there may be an association between AA intake and physical growth. We aimed to investigate the association between different types of AA intake and physical growth among children. METHODS A cross-sectional study including 780 six-year-old children referred to 10 health care centers for vaccination between October 2017 and March 2018 was conducted. Anthropometric data was collected using standard methods, and dietary intake was assessed using a validated food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) in an interview by a trained technician. RESULTS Children in the highest tertile (3rd) of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) intake had a higher weight-for-age z-score (WAZ) (P = 0.02) and body mass index-for-age z-score (BAZ) (P = 0.001) compared to those in the lowest tertile (1st). Interestingly, BAZ was significantly associated with the highest tertile of acidic AA intake (P = 0.04), while an inverse association was observed between the highest tertile of aromatic AA (phenylalanine and tyrosine) intake and BAZ (P = 0.01) . No significant associations were observed between the highest tertile of sulfuric, aliphatic, or neutral AA and BAZ, height-for-age z-score (HAZ) or WAZ. Further, underweight was associated with the 3rd tertile of aromatic, alcoholic, aliphatic or neutral AA and BCAA intake. Aliphatic and neutral AA intake was also increased the risk of overweight. Finally, stunted growth patterns were associated with the highest tertile of acidic, alcoholic. CONCLUSION Findings presented in this study showed that higher BAZ and WAZ are associated with 3rd tertiles of BCAA intake, but lower BAZ were associated with 3rd tertiles of aromatic AA (phenylalanine and tyrosine) intake. Future research in other populations are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Our meta-analysis aimed to determine the dose-response relationship between caffeine intake and risk of small for gestational age (SGA) and preterm birth (PB). A systematic search of PubMed, Web of science and Scopus was done from inception to January 2023 using relevant keywords. All case-control and cohort studies reported in English were included if the exposure of interest was caffeine intake during pregnancy, the outcome of interest was spontaneous SGA and PB, and multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) or risk ratios were provided or could be calculated. In all, 22 studies (15 cohort studies and seven case-control studies) were included in this review. Examining the association of caffeine intake with risk of PB, no significant relationship was found (Pooled ES: 1.04; 95% CI: 0.95 to 1.14, P = 0.019). Findings from this meta-analysis demonstrated that caffeine intake had a significantly higher risk of SGA respectively (Pooled ES: 1.28; 95% CI: 1.16 to 1.41, P < 0.001). A dose-response analysis proposed that an increase of 100 mg caffeine per day was associated with a 13% greater risk of SGA. This study confirmed that caffeine intake raises the risk of SGA. However, the risk of PB was not found to be reliably associated with maternal caffeine consumption.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The present systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of capsinoids on body mass index (BMI), body weight (BW), waist circumference (WC), waist-hip ratio (WHR), fat mass (FM), fat-free mass (FFM), visceral fat area (VFA), and percentage body fat (PBF). METHODS Four databases were searched from inception to November 2020 using relevant keywords. All clinical trials investigating the effects of capsinoids supplementation on body composition and anthropometric measures were retained. RESULTS Overall, 19 effect sizes and 13 trials with a total sample size of 838 participants were included. Capsinoids supplementation had no effect on BW (P = 0.230), BMI (P = 0.182), WC (P = 0.611), FM (P = 0.946), FFM (P = 0.917), WHR (P = 0.599), VFA (P = 0.836), and PBF (P = 0.973). Findings from subgroup analysis revealed a significant reduction in BW in trials conducted on overweight participants, and lasted ≥12 weeks, However, no significant non-linear associations were found between capsinoids supplementation dosage and study duration with both BW (For dosage: Pnon-linearity = 0.527, for duration: Pnon-linearity = 0.410) and BMI (For dosage: Pnon-linearity = 0.308, for duration: Pnon-linearity = 0.578). CONCLUSION Capsinoids supplementation has no significant effect on obesity indicators. However, capsinoids in trials conducted on overweight participants, and lasted ≥12 weeks may have a significant and modest reduction in BW. Well-designed RCTs with larger sample size and longer duration are needed to confirm these results.

Abstract
Background Numerous studies report an association between coffee or caffeine consumption and pregnancy loss; however, the nature and strength of this relationship have not been clearly established. Based on recent studies, our meta-analysis aimed to test whether a dose-response relationship between coffee or caffeine consumption and pregnancy loss exists. Methods We searched for articles in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus published until May 2022. Two independent reviewers extracted data and rated the quality of the evidence using the GRADE approach. We applied a random-effects, one-stage dose-response meta-analysis. Results A total of 34 articles (18 cohort studies and 16 case-control studies) were included in this review. Results showed a significantly higher risk of pregnancy loss for coffee consumption before (Pooled ES: 1.21; 95% CI: 1.01-1.43) and during pregnancy (Pooled ES: 1.26; 95% CI: 1.04-1.57), and for coffee consumption during pregnancy in case-control studies (Pooled ES: 1.20; 95% CI: 1.19-6.41). Findings from this meta-analysis demonstrated that caffeine intake during pregnancy was associated with a significantly higher risk of pregnancy loss in cohort (Pooled ES: 1.58; 95% CI: 1.23-2.01) and case-control studies (Pooled ES: 2.39; 95% CI: 1.69-3.37, P < 0.001), respectively. A dose-response analysis suggested that an increase of a cup of coffee per day during pregnancy was associated with 3% increased risk of pregnancy loss; 100 mg of caffeine per day during pregnancy was also associated with 14 and 26% increased risk of pregnancy loss in cohort and case-control studies, respectively. A non-linear dose-response association was observed between coffee intake and the risk of pregnancy loss. Conclusion This study confirms that coffee or caffeine consumption raises the risk of pregnancy loss. Researchers are encouraged to conduct more studies to explore the underlying mechanisms and active compounds in coffee and caffeine. Abstract
Biodiesel as a renewable fuel has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Microalgae biomass is becoming an attractive raw material for producing biodiesel using supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) as a safe and environmentally friendly technique with high efficiency for lipid extraction. In this study, the lipid of Nannochloropsis oculata was extracted under different conditions of SC-CO2 to assess the kinetics of supercritical fluid extraction. The effective parameters on lipid extraction, including temperature, pressure, and the existence of n-hexane as a co-solvent, were investigated. The results show that an increase in temperature at low or high pressures causes the kinetic constant of lipid extraction to decrease or increase, respectively. Also, an increase in pressure causes the kinetic constant of lipid extraction to increase at low or high temperatures. The most yield and the most kinetic constant value during extraction with pure CO2 are about 0.262 [g extracted lipid/g microalgal biomass] and 0.062 min-1, respectively, at the highest pressure and temperature (i.e., 550 bar and 75 °C). Using SC-CO2 laced with n-hexane increases both the final yield and the rate of lipid extraction. Also, it improves the quality of the biodiesel fuel through the extraction of unsaturated fatty acids with a concentration of almost two times more than saturated fatty acids. Additionally, results reveal that the effect of adding n-hexane to CO2 in lipid extraction would be more efficient by increasing the temperature and lowering the pressure.

Abstract
Childhood is a critical period for susceptibility to malnutrition. The consumption of ultraprocessed foods (UPFs) has been increasing among children. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between UPF intake and overweight/obesity and malnutrition in children. 788 children aged 6 years were included in a population-based cross-sectional study in Tehran. A 168-item semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to evaluate dietary intake. UPFs were detected using the NOVA classification system. Logistic regression analyses were used, and results were reported as odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of obesity and malnutrition across the tertiles of UPFs adjusted for energy intake, socioeconomic status, and physical activity. The mean weight, height, BMI, and total energy intake of participants were 20.85 ± 2.35 kg, 113.75 ± 2.00 cm, 16.12 + 1.84 kg/m2, and 1014.74 ± 259.16 (kcal/d), respectively. There were no significant associations between UPF intake and obesity (OR = 0.97; 95% CI 0.31 to 3.01; P-trend = 0.98), wasting (OR = 0.94; 95% CI 0.30 to 2.87; P-trend = 0.87), overweight/obesity (OR = 0.86; 95% CI 0.59 to 1.25; P-trend = 0.45), underweight/wasting (OR = 0.69; 95% CI 0.40 to 1.17; P-trend = 0.17), marginal-stunting (OR = 1.16; 95% CI 0.71 to 1.89; P-trend = 0.53), or marginal-stunting/overweight/obesity (OR = 1.25; 95% CI 0.62 to 2.54; P-trend = 0.47). There was no evidence of an association between intake of UPFs and risk of overweight, obesity, and malnutrition in children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Epidemiologic studies show a strong association between chronic inflammation and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Diet may also affect the risk of T2D by modulating inflammation. This meta-analysis aimed to assess the relation of dietary inflammatory index (DII) and risk of T2D. METHODS PubMed and Scopus were systematically searched from their inception to September 2020 to identify relevant studies. Relative risks, hazard ratios, or odds ratios (OR), with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CI), were calculated and pooled using a random-effects model. RESULTS A total of 48 different studies, with a total sample size of 1,687,424 participants, were eligible to be included in this meta-analysis. In the overall analysis, no significant association was observed between DII and risk of T2D (OR = 1.03, 95% CI: 0.91 to 1.15), with significant evidence for heterogeneity (I 2 = 96.5%, P < 0.001); however, higher DII was identified as being significantly related to increased risk of T2D in high quality studies (OR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.15 to 2.17). In the stratified analysis by the dietary assessment tool, background disease, and sex of participants, DII showed no significant association with T2D. CONCLUSIONS Higher DII might be associated with an increased risk of T2D. Additional well-designed studies are required to confirm this finding.

Abstract
The goals of this study were to study relationships between maternal and children's dietary patterns (DPs) and to assess how children's DP was associated with child anthropometry. This cross-sectional study included 788 pairs of 6-year-old girls and mothers in health centers in Tehran, Iran. Information on dietary intake was collected with a 168-item food frequency questionnaire. Principal component factor analysis was performed to label different data-driven dietary patterns. Three different binary logistic regression models were used to evaluate the associations between child's DPs and child anthropometry. A positive correlation was found between all maternal patterns and child's Western DP (p < 0.001). Maternal prudent and Western DPs were correlated with child's high-protein DP (p < 0.001). Children's high-protein DP was negatively correlated with maternal high fat DP (p < 0.001). Maternal prudent and high fat DPs were correlated with prudent DP in children (p < 0.001). In adjusted models, a child being in the highest compared to the first quartile of the high-protein DP was associated with decreased odds of underweight and wasting (OR 0.43; 95% CI 0.23-0.80).Conclusion: The present study showed inverse associations between a high-protein DP in children and being underweight and wasted. Also, a positive correlation was found between all maternal DPs and children's Western DPs. This correlation should be taken into account while managing child nutrition by means of educating parents on the influence of their own dietary pattern on their children. Moreover, getting enough protein through a balanced diet should be considered in children. What is Known: • Some research exists on the intake of specific foods in relation to risk of abnormal growth in children. • Less is known about the relationship between mothers' and children's food intake. What is New: • Better adherence to a high-protein dietary pattern was significantly associated with lower risk of being both underweight and wasted. • This study suggests that correlation between mothers' and their children's dietary patterns exists, which should be taken into consideration when managing child nutrition.

Abstract
AIM The present study aimed to review and perform a meta-analysis summarizing the available evidence on the association between red meat consumption and obesity. METHODS A computerized search strategy was performed up to Feb 9, 2020. PubMed, Scopus, and web of science were used to conduct a comprehensive search for all relevant publications. The quality of the included articles was determined by using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. A random-effects model was conducted for analysis of the included cross-sectional studies. In the case of significant heterogeneity, subgroup analyses were conducted to explore possible sources of inter-study heterogeneity. RESULTS In the overall pooled estimate of 3 studies, it was shown that red meat consumption was not associated with overweight (pooled effect size: 1.19, 95% CI: 0.97-1.46, p = 0.099). The results from combining 7 studies showed a non-significant association between red meat intake and obesity (pooled effect size: 1.16, 95% CI: 0.93-1.44, p = 0.199) with significant heterogeneity among studies (I2 = 87.3%, pheterogeneity < 0.0001). CONCLUSION In conclusion, results extend the evidence that red meat consumption was not associated with the risk of overweight as well as no association between total meat consumption and obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Weight status and growth during childhood are indicative of healthy development throughout the lifespan. Thus, understanding the influence of overall quality of diet and dietary patterns on anthropometric measures during childhood is critical to inform dietary recommendations. The current study used an updated version of the healthy eating index (HEI) to evaluate the association between overall diet quality and measures of childhood development in six-year-old children. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted across 788 six-year-old children referred to healthcare centers in Tehran, Iran. Anthropometric indices and dietary intake were evaluated using standard protocols and food frequency questionnaires, respectively. The HEI-2015 was used to evaluate participant diet quality. The total HEI-2015 score ranged from zero to 100 using the sum of thirteen food score components. RESULTS Children in the highest tertile of HEI score had higher nutrient intakes and HEI-related food groups (p < 0.05). Children within the highest tertile of HEI score compared to those within the lowest tertile were more likely to be overweight (OR: 1.45; 95% CI = 1.01; 2.08). CONCLUSIONS Findings presented in this study showed that HEI was not associated with a greater likelihood of obesity, underweight, severe underweight, and stunting. However, children in the highest tertile of HEI score were more likely to be overweight.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diets with high glycemic index (GI) or high glycemic load (GL) have been linked to important risk factors associated with the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS), such as dyslipidemia, higher blood glucose, and insulin concentrations. However, the role of GI and GL in relation to Mets is still understudied and controversial. This review, therefore, assessed whether high GI or GL contribute to development of Mets. METHODS A systematic search of four bibliographic databases was conducted (MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Sciences, and Scopus) from inception to January 2020 for observational studies assessing GI/GL in relation to MetS. Risk estimates were pooled using random-effect models for the highest versus lowest intake categories, and assessed for heterogeneity using subgroup analysis. The dose-response nature of the relationship was also investigated. Sensitivity analysis and Egger test were used to check the robustness of findings and the possibility of publication bias, respectively. RESULTS Data from 12 publications (one cohort study and eleven cross-sectional studies) with a total sample size of 36,295 subjects are included. The pooled effect sizes from the nine studies indicated high versus low dietary GI was associated with increased risk of MetS (OR = 1.05, 95% CI: 1.01 to 1.09) (I2 = 58.1, P = .004). This finding was supported by all subgroup analyses except where studies used 24-h recalls for dietary assessment. Additionally, a linear dose-response investigation revealed that each 5-point increment in GI was associated with 2% increase in the risk of MetS (OR = 1.02, 95% CI: 1.01 to 1.02); non-linear pattern was insignificant, however (p-nonlinearity = 0.63). Moreover, pooled effect sizes from ten studies suggested that no association was found between the GL and MetS with results remaining consistent in all subgroup analyses. CONCLUSION A diet with lower GI may protect against MetS. Nutrition policy and clinical practices should encourage a diet with low GI. Future studies should include both GI and GL and different criteria of MetS to provide a better comparison.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Low intake of B vitamins can lead to hyperhomocysteinaemia, which is reported as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, little is known about this relationship. Therefore, we decided to examine the association between dietary intake of B vitamins and cardiovascular risk factors in elderly men. METHODS The present cross-sectional study consisted of 357 elderly men. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated and reliable food frequency questionnaire. All biochemical factors [fasting blood sugar (FBS), triglyceride (TG), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)], waist circumference (WC) and blood pressure (BP) were assessed using standard methods. RESULTS A significant inverse association was observed between high dietary intake of total B vitamins (ORTotal B vitamins : 0.30; 95% CI: 0.10, 0.86; P = .01) and vitamin B9 (ORvitamin B9 : 0.20; 95% CI: 0.02, 0.52; P = .002) with high WC. Furthermore, an inverse association was observed between high dietary intake of vitamin B6 (ORvitamin B6 : 0.28; 95% CI: 0.08, 1.00; P = .05) and vitamin B9 (ORvitamin B9 : 0.20; 95% CI: 0.06, 0.70; P = .01) with hs-CRP level. CONCLUSIONS In elderly men, a high dietary intake of total B vitamins and vitamin B9 was associated with lower odds of having a high WC. Similarly, high dietary intake of vitamin B6 and B9 was associated with lower odds of having a high hs-CRP level.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to investigate the effects of ginger on biomarkers of oxidative stress such as glutathione peroxidase (GPx), malondialdehyde (MDA), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) this meta-analysis was performed. METHODS Five databases were searched from inception to May 2020 using relevant keywords. Results were reported as bias-corrected standardized mean difference (Hedges' g) with 95 % confidence intervals (CI) using random-effects models. RESULTS Eleven RCTs were included. Ginger resulted in significantly increased on GPx (Hedges' g: 1.93, 95 % CI: 0.20 to 3.66, P = 0.029) and significant reduction in MDA (Hedges' g: -1.45, 95 % CI: -2.31 to -0.59, P = 0.001), but no significant change in TAC (Hedges' g: 0.42, 95 % CI: -0.03 to 0.88, P = 0.069). Greater reduction in MDA was detected in trials using ≤1 g ginger, lasted <12 weeks, participants aged ≥30 years old, among both gender and were conducted sample size ≤40. TAC was increased by administered high doses of ginger, lasted ≥12 weeks, mean age ≥30, sample size >40, and both gender and female. CONCLUSION Overall, this meta-analysis demonstrated ginger supplementation decreased MDA and increased GPx but the results showed no significant alterations in TAC activities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Earlier published studies on maternal caffeine intake during pregnancy in relation to the risk of low birth weight (LBW) (birth weight <2500 g) have indicated conflicting findings. Therefore, the present systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to examine the association between maternal caffeine intake and risk of LBW. METHODS We searched for relevant articles published up to Jan 2021 through PubMed and Scopus. For this purpose, we used MESH (Medical Subject Heading) and non-MESH keywords. Cohort studies that considered maternal caffeine intake as the exposure variable and LBW as the main outcome variable were included in the systematic review. Finally, seven cohort studies were considered in this systematic review and meta-analysis. RESULTS Combining seven effect sizes, we found a significant positive association between maternal caffeine intake and risk of LBW (RR: 1.70; 95% CI: 1.19-2.43). We also found that each additional 100-mg per day of maternal caffeine intake was significantly associated with an increased risk of LBW (RR: 1.12; 95% CI: 1.03-1.22; Pheterogeneity = 0.020). In addition, nonlinear dose-response analysis showed a significant relationship (Pnonlinearity < 0.001) between maternal caffeine intake and risk of LBW. CONCLUSIONS In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we found a significant positive association between maternal caffeine intake and risk of LBW.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Weight status and growth during childhood are indicative of healthy development throughout the lifespan. It is well understood that dietary patterns and overall quality of diet can prevent disease, improve health status and optimise growth and development. The current study investigates the relationship between overall diet quality and measures of childhood development including body mass index and height-for-age in 6-year-old children. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted across 788 6-year-old children from Tehran, Iran, in 2018. Food quality score (FQS) was used to assess overall diet quality, in addition to a modified food-based diet quality score specific to children (modified FQS) developed by our group. RESULTS Participants in the highest tertile using the modified FQS had the highest height-for-age z-score (HAZ) (-0.509 ± 0.028 vs -0.605 ± 0.028; P = .048). In contrast, participants in the highest tertile assessed using the original FQS had a higher BMI for age z-score (BAZ) compared to participants in the first tertile (0.391 ± 0.072 vs 0.266 ± 0.072; P = .023). Children within the highest tertile, according to the original FQS, compared to those within the lowest tertile were 49% less likely to be categorised as severely underweight (OR: 0.51; 95% CI: 0.47-0.98). CONCLUSIONS Findings presented in this study demonstrate that FQS was significantly associated with participants characterised as severely underweight; however, FQS was not associated with other anthropometric parameters. Therefore, future well-designed cohort studies are required to address limitations of the current study.

Abstract
PURPOSE Several studies evaluated the associations between specific beverages and cardio-metabolic risks among children. However, the evidence on the association between patterns of the beverage consumption and children's anthropometric indices is rare. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the association between Healthy Beverage Index (HBI) and anthropometric measures among 6-year-old girl children. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 788 children selected from health centers in Tehran, Iran. Data on beverage intake, socio-demographic, physical activity, and anthropometric characteristics were evaluated using reliable and validated standard protocols. The predefined HBI was calculated based on the previous research. RESULTS After controlling for several confounders [mother age, mother body mass index, mother physical activity, socioeconomic status, children physical activity and energy intake, total oils (all kinds of oils like animal and plant oils), and total sweet foods (sweet foods except sweetened beverages)], being in the third compared to the first tertile of HBI among children was associated with increased odds of wasting (OR: 5.16; 95% CI 1.5-17.79) and underweight/wasting (OR: 1.81; 95% CI 1.07-3.07). Among the HBI components, just being in the third compared to the first tertile of high-fat milk was inversely associated with decreased odds of wasting (OR: 0.18; 95% CI 0.04-0.73). CONCLUSIONS The HBI among children was associated with higher odds of wasting and underweight/wasting. In addition, high-fat milk consumption decreased the odds of wasting among children. Further prospective studies need to confirm these results. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level V, descriptive cross-sectional study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Given the high prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among older adults, especially in men compared to women, the aim of this study was to examine nut and legume consumption in relation to Framingham risk score (FRS) and cardiovascular risk factors in older adult men. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, we recruited 267 men aged 60-74 years old. Diet was measured using a validated and reliable food frequency questionnaire. We used FRS to predict a 10-year chance of developing CVD among participants. RESULTS Nut consumption was inversely associated with serum levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (Odds ratio (OR): 0.36, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.17, 0.59; P < 0.001) and directly associated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) level (OR: 2.24, 95% CI: 1.18, 3.89; P = 0.001). In addition, higher intake of legumes was associated with lower serum levels of LDL-C (OR: 0.28, 95% CI: 0.15, 0.49; P < 0.001) and higher serum levels of HDL-C (OR: 2.14, 95% CI: 1.20, 3.72; P = 0.005). However, no associations were observed between nuts and legumes on FRS and other CVD risk factors. CONCLUSIONS Overall, nut and legume consumption was associated with higher serum levels of HDL-C and lower serum levels of LDL-C. Future studies are required to elucidate the association between nut and legume consumption and CVD risk factors to characterize gender differences.

Abstract
Evidence suggests that garlic supplementation may have an effect on oxidative stress by augmenting the rate of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants and diminishing pro-oxidant enzymes. Given inconsistencies across studies, we aimed to systematically review the current literature and quantify the effects of garlic supplementation on oxidative stress. We conducted a systematic search with multiple databases (Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science) to find relevant articles published prior to October 2020. Results were reported as bias-corrected standardized mean difference (Hedges' g) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) using random-effects models. Cochrane's Q and I squared (I2 ) tests were used to determine heterogeneity among the studies included. Twelve randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included. Garlic doses ranged from 80 to 4,000 mg/day, and intervention duration varied between 2 and 24 weeks. Garlic supplementation increased serum level of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) (Hedges' g: 2.77, 95% CI: 1.37 to 4.17, p < 0.001) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) (Hedges' g: 13.76, 95% CI: 4.24 to 23.29, p = 0.004), while it reduced the malondialdehyde serum level (MDA) (Hedges' g: -1.94, 95% CI: -3.17 to -0.70, p = 0.002). Due to limited data available, glutathione (GSH) was not considered for the current meta-analysis. The nonlinear dose-response effect of garlic supplementation was not observed with regard to serum TAC and MDA levels (TAC: p-nonlinearity = 0.398; MDA: p-nonlinearity = 0.488). Garlic supplementation appears to improve serum levels of TAC, MDA, and SOD. Garlic supplementation may be useful to reduce oxidative stress and related diseases. Future studies with large sample sizes and longer duration are required to confirm these findings.

Abstract
PURPOSE This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the effect of zinc supplementation on immune factors in randomized controlled trials. METHODS A comprehensive search was done in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane databases up to December 2020. We used standard and weighted mean differences and 95% confidence intervals for net changes in selected parameters of immune responses. Subgroup analysis was used to find heterogeneity. RESULT Overall, 35 RCTs comprising 1995 participants were eligible for this meta-analysis. There was a significant reduction of circulating CRP (WMD: -32.4; 95% CI: -44.45 to -19.62, p < 0.001), hs-CRP (WMD: -0.95; 95% CI: -1.01 to -0.89, p < 0.001), Neutrophil levels (SMD: -0.46; 95% CI: -0.90 to -0.01, p = 0.043), following zinc supplementation. CD4 level also increased significantly, (WMD: 1.79; 95% CI: 0.57 to 3, p = 0.004). Zinc supplementation had no significant effect on WBC (SMD: -0.66; 95% CI: -1.67 to 0.36, p = 0.204), lymphocyte (WMD: 1.86; 95% CI: -0.86 to 4.58, p = 0.181), monocyte levels (SMD: -0.16; 95% CI: -0.07 to 0.39, p = 0.167), CD3 (SMD: 0.37; 95% CI: -0.49 to 1.22, p = 0.399). CONCLUSION Zinc supplementation decreased the CRP, hs-CRP and TNF-α, IL-6, neutrophil and increased CD3 and CD4 level significantly.

Abstract
PURPOSE Randomized Clinical Trials (RCTs) have provided varied and conflicting findings regarding the effect of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on inflammatory biomarkers. This study was conducted to review existing literature to determine whether NAC supplementation can affect inflammatory biomarkers in adults. METHODS Bibliographic databases of Scopus, and PubMed were used for relevant papers published until October 2019. Results were reported as weighted mean differences (WMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) using multi-level models. Cochrane's Q and I-squared (I2) tests were used to determine heterogeneity among studies. RESULTS Twenty-four RCTs which include 1057 sample size were entered to analysis. NAC doses and intervention duration ranged from 400 to 2000 mg/d, and 1 to 80 weeks, respectively. Oral supplementation of NAC reduced serum level of C-reactive protein (CRP) [WMD: -0.61 mg/L, 95% CI: -1.18 to -0.03, P = 0.039, I2 = 79.6%], and interleukin-6 (IL-6) [WMD: -0.43 pg/mL, 95% CI: -0.69 to -0.17, P = 0.001, I2 = 89.3%]. However, the effect of oral NAC supplementation on other inflammatory biomarkers was nonsignificant. Dose-response investigation showed a non-linear association between oral NAC supplementation with CRP. CONCLUSION Oral NAC supplementation reduced serum level of CRP and IL-6, but did not affect other inflammatory biomarkers. Nevertheless, more RCTs seems to be required to explore how NAC in different dosage and different routes of administration can affect inflammatory biomarkers.

Abstract
Metabolic acidosis, which can be affected by dietary acid-base load, seems to be associated with psychological disorders through different pathways. Given limited evidence on dietary acid-base load, we aimed to examine the association of dietary acid-base load with psychological disorders in Iranian women. This cross-sectional study was performed on 447 female subjects (20-50 years old). Dietary intake was assessed using a valid food frequency questionnaire for Iran. Dietary acid-base load was calculated through different indices including potential renal acid load (PRAL), net endogenous acid production (NEAP), and dietary acid load (DAL). To assess psychological disorders, an Iranian validated version of depression, anxiety, and stress scale (DASS-21) was used. The mean value of PRAL, NEAP, and DAL were -8.87mEq/da, 37.94mEq/day, and 30.77mEq/day, respectively. Considering a wide range of confounding variables, compared with the first tertile, a significant positive association was observed between dietary acid-base load and depression (ORPRAL: 3.63; 95 %CI:1.97, 6.71; Ptrend = 0.0001) (ORNEAP:3.42; 95 %CI: 1.87, 6.23; Ptrend = 0.0001) (ORDAL: 3.02; 95 %CI: 1.64, 5.58; Ptrend = 0.0001). Women in the high dietary acid-base load category had higher anxiety (ORPRAL: 3.31; 95 %CI: 1.81, 6.06; Ptrend = 0.0001) (ORNEAP:3.47; 95 %CI: 1.90, 6.33; Ptrend = 0.0001) (ORDAL: 3.25; 95 %CI: 1.76, 5.98; Ptrend = 0.0001). Moreover, there was a strong positive relationship between dietary acid-base load and psychologicaldistress (ORPRAL: 3.79; 95 %CI: 2.09, 6.90; Ptrend = 0.0001) (ORNEAP: 3.67; 95 %CI: 2.04, 6.58; Ptrend = 0.0001) (ORDAL: 3.00; 95 %CI: 1.66, 5.43; Ptrend = 0.0001). Women with higher dietary acid-base load score had greater odds for depression, anxiety, and psychological distress compared to lower ones.

The random-effects models (DerSimonian-Laird method) were applied to pool the effect sizes. Subgroup analysis was performed to find potential sources of heterogeneity. RESULTS 28 studies (3 prospective cohorts and 25 cross-sectional) were included in the current systematic review and meta-analysis. The total sample sizes ranged from 244 to 60252. A positive significant association was found between overweight (pooled risk estimate: 1.15, 95% CI: 1.00-1.31, P = 0.04) and obesity (pooled risk estimate: 1.53, 95% CI: 1.16-2.02, P = 0.003) with risk of low self-esteem, respectively. A significant positive association was found between obesity and risk of body dissatisfaction (pooled risk estimate: 4.05, 95% CI: 2.34-7.023, P = 0.0001). Moreover, no association was found between overweight and risk of body dissatisfaction among children and adolescents. Also, no association was observed between overweight/obesity and risk of depression and anxiety. CONCLUSIONS Findings showed a positive association between obesity and the risk of body dissatisfaction and low self-esteem among children and adolescents. Moreover, there was a significant positive association between overweight and the risk of low self-esteem.

Abstract
Previous studies reported inconsistent findings regarding the consumption of a vegetarian diet with mental health outcomes, specifically depression, anxiety and stress. A systematic review was conducted to summarize the current state of literature regarding our understanding of the association between a vegetarian diet and depression, anxiety and stress. A literature search was completed using Scopus, PubMed, and the Web of Science for relevant articles published prior to July 2020. Prospective cohort and cross-sectional studies conducted on adults reporting risk estimates for the consumption of a vegetarian diet, depression, anxiety, and stress were selected. A fixed effects or a random effects model was performed to pool effect sizes. Results from 13 publications (four cohort studies and nine cross-sectional studies) assessing the relationship between the consumption of a vegetarian diet and depression, anxiety and stress were included. The pooled effect size from 10 studies indicated no association between the consumption of a vegetarian diet and depression (pooled effect size: 1.02, 95% CI: 0.84-1.25, p = 0.817). Further, the pooled effect size from four studies suggests that a vegetarian diet is not associated with anxiety (pooled effect size: 1.09, 95% CI: 0.71-1.68, p = 0.678). Due to insufficient data for stress, we were not able to pool the results. Together, no significant associations were observed between the consumption of a vegetarian diet and depression or anxiety. Future cohort studies are needed to further investigate the effects of a vegetarian diet on these mental health outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a significant neurobehavioral disorder in children and adolescence which may be affected by diet. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the possible relationship between sugar consumption and the development of symptoms of ADHD. METHODS In March 2020, an exhaustive systematic literature search was conducted using Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus. In this meta-analysis of observational studies, odds ratios, relative risks, hazard ratios, and their 95% confidence intervals, which was reported for ADHD regarding SSBS, soft drink consumption, and dietary sugars, were used to calculate ORs and standard errors. At first, a fixed-effects model was used to drive the overall effect sizes using log ORs and SEs. If there was any significant between-studies heterogeneity, the random-effects model was conducted. Cochran's Q test and I2 were used to measure potential sources of heterogeneity across studies. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used to assess the quality of the included articles. RESULTS Seven studies, two cross-sectional, two case-control, and three prospective with a total of 25,945 individuals were eligible to include in the current meta-analysis. The association between sugar and soft drink consumption and the risk of ADHD symptoms were provided based on the random-effects model (pooled effect size: 1.22, 95%CI: 1.04-1.42, P = 0.01) (I² = 81.9%, P heterogeneity< 0.0001). CONCLUSION This meta-analysis indicated a positive relationship between overall sugar and sugar-sweetened beverages consumption and symptoms of ADHD; however, there was heterogeneity among included studies. Future well-designed studies that can account for confounds are necessary to confirm the effect of sugar on ADHD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Numerous studies have reported the association of ultra-processed foods with excess body weight; however, the nature and extent of this relation has not been clearly established. This systematic review was conducted to analyze the currently documented evidence regarding the association between ultra-processed food with overweight and obesity. METHODS A literature search was performed using multiple literature databases for relevant articles published prior to November 2019. Random effects model, namely the DerSimonian-Laird method, was applied to pool effect sizes. The potential sources of heterogeneity across studies were explored using the Cochrane Q test. RESULTS Fourteen studies (one cohort study and thirteen cross-sectional studies) were included in this review. A significant association was identified between ultra-processed food intake and overweight (pooled effect size: 1.02; 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 1.01, 1.03, p < 0.001) and obesity (pooled effect size: 1.26; 95% CI: 1.13, 1.41, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Our findings revealed a positive association between ultra-processed foods and excess body weight. Future studies with longitudinal designs and adequate control for confounding factors are required to clarify whether ultra-processed food intake alters anthropometric parameters and leads to obesity.

Abstract
Previous studies reported inconsistent findings regarding the effects of magnesium supplementation on obesity measures. This study was done to quantify the effect of magnesium supplementation on body weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), Waist Circumference (WC), Body Fat (BF) percentage and Waist to Hip Ratio (WHR). Four online databases (Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar and Cochrane library) were searched until March 2020 using relevant keywords. Random-effects model was used to pool effect sizes; Cochran's Q-test and I2 index assessed heterogeneity. Sensitivity analysis and Egger test were used to check the robustness of findings and the possibility of publication bias, respectively. Thirty-two RCTs including different dosage of magnesium (48-450 mg/d), and duration (6-24 weeks) were entered to this study. Magnesium supplementation resulted in a great reduction in BMI [Weighted Mean Difference (WMD): -0.21 kg/m2, 95% CI: -0.41, -0.001, P = 0.048, I2 = 89.5%, n = 22], which was mainly driven by the effect among those with magnesium deficiency, insulin resistance related disorders, and obesity at baseline. No significant change was observed in bodyweight, WC, BF percentage and WHR as compared to controls. However, the change in body weight, and WC was significant in subgroups of participants with insulin resistance related disorders, hypertension, obesity, magnesium deficiency at baseline, and females. We found a significant reduction in BMI following magnesium supplementation. The change in body weight and WC were evident in certain subgroups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Despite controversies, no study has systematically summarized findings from earlier studies on the effect of berberine and barberry on anthropometric measures. Therefore, the current systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted on the effect of berberine and barberry on body mass index (BMI), body weight (BW), waist circumference (WC) and waist-hip ratio (WHR) in adults. METHODS Relevant studies, published up to August 2019, were searched through PubMed/Medline, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, Embase and Google Scholar. All randomized clinical trials investigating the effect of berberine and barberry on the anthropometric measures including BMI, BW, WC or/and WHR were included. RESULTS Out of 252 citations, 12 trials that enrolled 849 subjects were included. Berberine and barberry resulted in no significant change in BMI (Weighted mean differences (WMD): -0.16 kg/m2; 95 % CI: -0.43 to 0.11, P = 0.247), BW (WMD: -0.11 kg; 95 % CI: -0.13 to 0.91, P = 0.830), and berberine resulted in not significant in WC (WMD: -0.58 cm; 95 % CI: -1.89 to 0.72, P = 0.379) and significant reduction in WHR (WMD: -0.03; 95 % CI: -0.04 to -0.01, P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION We found a significant reduction in WHR following berberine consumption in adults. Further clinical trials with high quality according to challenges mentioned seem to be helpful to use berberine and barberry as a supplement for certain health conditions, efficiently.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinical pathways (CPs) increase in popularity and are known to lead to several benefits in the hospital environment. Clinical pathways can be either paper-based or software-based. It is known that paper-based CPs can result in more paperwork instead of simplifying daily routines of healthcare workers. Insufficient research has been done on the acceptance of software-based CPs by different user groups. Our aim in this study was to assess the effectiveness of the software-based CPs (CPS) from the perspective of healthcare professionals in the hospital environment as well as to investigate the differences in perceived effectiveness between user groups. METHODS Using surveys and interviews, data were collected in four departments of an academic medical center. A distinction was made between decision makers (DM) and executive staff (ES). The surveys contained questions based on the Technology Acceptance Model and four objectives of the software defined by the hospital. Statistical tests were used to investigate the effectiveness of CPS and study the differences between DM and ES. Interviews were recorded and transcribed based on grounded theory principals. RESULTS After implementation, monitoring protocol-based working was significantly improved (p = .026) and significantly higher efficiency on the work floor was reported (p = .046). ES perceived the software as less useful than expected (Md = 3.25 vs. Md = 2.75, p = .028) compared to DM and were less convinced of its ability to improve monitoring protocol-based working. The most important benefits of CPS as perceived by its users are the better overview of tasks it provides and facilitating documentation. Negative aspects mentioned were the lack of usability and the inflexibility of the software, and particularly ES claimed that the software did not increase their effectiveness. CONCLUSION Our study showed that CPS is effective from healthcare professionals' perspective due to its ability to increase monitoring of protocol-based working and by enhancing the efficiency on the work floor. However, the users also acknowledge that the software lacks usability and is not flexible enough, which results in an additional workload. Policy makers should be more focused on informing and training executive staff more thoroughly when implementing a CPS. Our results strongly suggest that executive staff members need to be convinced of its usefulness and the added value a CPS provides. Preferably, they should be involved in the design phase of the software.

Abstract
Background: Examining dietary approach to stop hypertension (DASH) diet based on other dietary quality indices can be helpful to clarify positive aspects of this healthy dietary pattern. We aimed to examine the association between the DASH diet score and some diet quality indices among Iranian women. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 304 women aged 20 to 50 years old were recruited. Dietary diversity score (DDS), dietary energy density (DED), adherence to DASH diet, AlternativeHealthy Eating Index (AHEI) and mean adequacy ratio (MAR) were examined as suggested by previous articles. Dietary quality indices, anthropometric indices, and dietary intake were categorized based on DASH tertiles. A semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire with 168items was used for dietary assessment. Results: There were no significant differences in the demographic characteristics of participants across DASH tertiles (P>0.05). Participants who adhered more to the DASH diet had lower DEDthan those with lower adherence (0.99±0.35 vs 1.26±0.30; P=0.01). Significant differences were observed in the index of DDS across tertiles (P=0.01), however no differences in nutrient adequacy ratio (NAR) and MAR (0.93) index across the DASH categories were found.Additionally, DDS to DED in the top tertile of the DASH diet was greater than the bottom one(6.7±2.9 vs 4.4±1.9; P=0.001). Conclusion: The present study indicated that greater adherence to the DASH diet is inversely associated with DED and AHEI. As well as, there was a positive association between the DASHdiet and DDS/DED ratio. However, more studies are needed to confirm the results of this study

Abstract
In this study we aimed to assess the perceived effectiveness of clinical pathway management software for healthcare professionals. A case study on the clinical pathway management software program Check-It was performed in three departments at an academic medical center. Four months after the implementation of the software, interviews were held with healthcare professionals who work with the system. The interview questions were posed in a semi-structured interview format and the participant were asked about the perceived positive or negative effects of Check-It, and whether they thought the software is effective for them. The interviews were recorded and transcribed based on grounded theory, using different coding techniques. Our results showed fewer overlooked tasks, pre-filled orders and letters, better overview, and increased protocol insight as positive aspects of using the software. Being not flexible enough was experienced as a negative aspect.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Promoter hypermethylation mediates gene silencing in many neoplasms. Acute leukemia has been reported to harbor multiple genes aberrantly silenced by hypermethylation. AIM In present study, we investigated the prevalence of hypermethylation of caspase-8 (CASP8), TMS1 and DAPK genes in correlation with clinicopathological factors in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). MATERIALS AND METHODS A case-control study has been conducted based on bone marrow and peripheral blood samples from 125 ALL patients and 100 sex-age matched healthy controls. Methylation specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and bisulfite sequencing PCR was performed to analyze the methylation status of these genes. Reverse transcription PCR and real time PCR was carried out to determine changes in the mRNA expression level of the genes due to hypermethylation. RESULTS Hypermethylation of the 5´CpG islands of the CASP8, TMS1 and DAPK gene promoters was found in 3.2, 6.4, and 13.6% of 125 childhood ALL samples from north Indian population, respectively. There were significant differences in pattern of hypermethylation of TMS1 (p = 0.045) and DAPK (p < 0.001) between patients and healthy controls. Down-regulation of mRNA expression was found in cases in which CASP8, TMS1 and DAPK were hypermethylated. CONCLUSIONS The present study indicated the impact of hypermethylation-mediated inactivation of CASP8, TMS1 and DAPK genes, which is associated with risk of childhood ALL. This abnormality occurs in leukemogenesis and it may be used as a biomarker and for predicting the prognosis of ALL.

Abstract
UNLABELLED We determined adherence to nine fall-related ACOVE quality indicators to investigate the quality of management of falls in the elderly population by general practitioners in the Netherlands. Our findings demonstrate overall low adherence to these indicators, possibly indicating insufficiency in the quality of fall management. Most indicators showed a positive association between increased risk for functional decline and adherence, four of which with statistical significance. INTRODUCTION This study aims to investigate the quality of detection and management of falls in the elderly population by general practitioners in the Netherlands, using the Assessing Care of Vulnerable Elders (ACOVE) quality indicators. METHODS Community-dwelling persons aged 70 years or above, registered in participating general practices, were asked to fill in a questionnaire designed to determine general practitioner (GP) adherence to fall-related indicators. We used logistic regression to estimate the association between increased risk for functional decline-quantified by the Identification of Seniors At Risk for Primary Care score-and adherence. We then cross-validated the self-reported falls with medical records. RESULTS Of the 950 elders responding to our questionnaire, only 10.6 % reported that their GP proactively asked them about falls. Of the 160 patients who reported two or more falls, or one fall for which they visited the GP, only 23.1 % had fall documentation in their records. Adherence ranged between 13.6 and 48.6 %. There was a significant positive association between the ISAR-PC scores and adherence in four QIs. Documentation of falls was highest (36.7 %) in patients whom the GP had proactively asked about falls. CONCLUSION Based on patient self-reports, adherence to the ACOVE fall-related indicators was poor, suggesting that the quality of evaluation and management of falls in community-dwelling older persons in the Netherlands is poor. The documentation of falls and fall-related risk factors was also poor. However, for most QIs, adherence to them increased with the increase in the risk of functional decline.

Abstract
PURPOSE Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a remarkable health problem worldwide, but its pathogenesis remains unknown. The aim of this study was to compare fat composition and secretory phospholipase-A2 (sPLA2) activity between the malignant and adjacent normal squamous tissues in patients with OSCC. METHODS Paired samples of malignant squamous and adjacent normal-appearing tissues were collected from 27 patients with OSCC. The fatty acid composition in the obtained tissues was determined by gas liquid chromatography. Tissue enzyme activities of sPLA2 were measured using the standard assay with Diheptanoyl Thio-Phosphatidylcholine as substrate. RESULTS In the OSCC tissue, the level of stearic acid (18:0) and activity of sPLA2 were higher (P < 0.001), and the levels of oleic acid (18:1n-9) and linoleic acid (18:2n-6) were lower than that in the adjacent normal-appearing squamous tissue (P < 0.001). The activity of sPLA2 in OSCC was strongly negatively correlated with the amount of 18:2n-6 (r = -0.41, P < 0.001). Negative significant associations were observed between the OSCC invasion and tissue levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHE). CONCLUSION The changes in the fatty acid composition and sPLA2 activity may be regarded as indicators of altered lipid metabolism occurring in vivo during squamous cell carcinogenesis.

Abstract
A growing body of evidence suggests that host genetic factors play an important role both in susceptibility to human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) infection and in progression to AIDS. Interleukin 18 (IL-18) is a pleiotropic proinflammatory cytokine that serves as an important regulator of immune responses. It plays a key role in induction of both Th1 and Th2 cytokines and, thereby, modulates their immune responses. Single nucleotide polymorphisms in the IL-18 gene promoter region may lead to an altered transcriptional activity and IL-18 production, and so this may account for individuals' variation to the risk of HIV-1 infection. With this perspective, the -137G/C polymorphism in the promoter region of the IL-18 gene was studied in 500 patients with HIV-1/AIDS and an equal number of sex and age matched healthy controls using sequence specific polymerase chain reaction analysis. We did not observe any significant association of the heterozygous G/C genotype with the risk of HIV-1-infection/AIDS. However, statistically significant associations of the G allele and homozygous G/G genotype of -137 G/C polymorphism of IL-18 promoter with increased risk of HIV-1/AIDS were identified. The data of the present study suggest that IL-18 -137 G allele and G/G genotype seem to be involved in the pathogenesis of HIV-1 infection among North Indians.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most worldwide common type of childhood cancer. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate-homocysteine methyltransferase (MTR) participate in folate pathways and are known as critical factors for DNA integrity as well as DNA hypomethylation. The aim of this work is to investigate frequency of MTHFR (677C→T and 1298A→C) and MTR (2756A→G) polymorphisms and their interaction with respect to possible effect on risk of childhood ALL among North Indian population. PROCEDURE A case control study from has been conducted on bone marrow and peripheral blood samples from 125 ALL patients and 100 sex-age matched healthy controls using PCR-RFLP method. RESULTS No statistically significant differences were observed for different genotypes between patients and controls (p>0.05). Significant difference for the risk of ALL in individuals having genotype of MTHFR 677TT (OR=0.61, 95% CI=0.21-1.77) and MTHFR 1298CC (OR=0.56, 95% CI=0.18-1.68) was not observed. The correlation of SNP of MTR gene and risk of ALL was not observed, too. CONCLUSIONS The differences in distribution of possible combined genotypes of MTHFR (677C→T, 1298A→C) and MTR (2756A→G) between ALL patients and controls were statistically insignificant.

Abstract
We have calculated the electrostatic interaction between two rod-like charged objects with arbitrary orientations in three dimensions. We obtained a closed-form formula expressing the interaction energy in terms of the separation distance between the centers of the two rod-like objects, r, their lengths (denoted by 2l₁ and 2l₂) and their relative orientations (indicated by θ and φ). When the objects have the same length (2l₁ = 2l₂ = l), for particular values of separations, i.e. for r ≤ 0.8l, two types of minimum appear in the interaction energy with respect to θ. By employing the closed-form formula and introducing a scaled temperature t, we have also studied the thermodynamic properties of a 1D system of rod-like charged objects. For different separation distances, the dependence of the specific heat of the system to the scaled temperature has been studied. It is found that, for r < 0.8l, the specific heat has a maximum.

Abstract
The fabrication of microarrays containing PCR-amplified genomic DNA extracts from mice tumors on a Zetaprobe membrane using a modified thermal ink-jet printer is described. A simple and cost-effective procedure for the fabrication of microarrays containing biological samples using a modified bubble-jet printing system is presented. Because of their mass-produced design, ink-jet printers are a much cheaper alternative to conventional spotting techniques. The usefulness of the biochip microarray platform is illustrated by the detection of human fragile histidine triad (FHIT), a tumor suppressor gene. Subcutaneous carcinomas were induced with MKN/FHIT and MKN/E4 cell lines in immunodeficient mice. Several weeks into their development, the tumors from both groups of mice were removed and subjected to DNA extraction by lysis of tissue samples. The extracted DNA samples were amplified by PCR (30 cycles) using the primers corresponding to nucleotides 2 to 18 of the FHIT sequence. The resulting solution was transferred to the individual reservoirs of a three-color cartridge from a conventional thermal ink-jet printer (HP 694C), and arrays were printed on to a Zetaprobe membrane. After spotting, these membranes were used in a hybridization assay, using fluorescent probes, and detected with a biochip.

Abstract
Detection of the p53 tumor suppressor gene is important in early cancer diagnostics because alterations in the gene have been associated with carcinogenic manifestations in several tissue types in humans. We have developed an antibody-based detection instrument, the biochip, to detect the presence of the anti-p53 antibody in human serum. The design of this highly integrated detector system is based on miniaturized phototransistors having multiple optical sensing elements, amplifiers, discriminators, and logic circuitry on an IC board. The system utilizes laser excitation and fluorescence signals to detect complex formation between the p53 monoclonal antibody and the p53 antigen. Recognition antibodies are immobilized on a nylon membrane platform and incubated in solutions containing antigens labeled with Cy5, a fluorescent cyanine dye. Subsequently, this membrane is placed on the detection platform of the biochip and fluorescence signal is induced using a 632.8-nm He-Ne laser. Using this immuno-biochip, we have been able to detect binding of the p53 monoclonal antibody to the human p53 cancer protein in biological matrices. The performance of the integrated phototransistors and amplifier circuits of the biochip, previously evaluated through measurement of the signal output response for various concentrations of fluorescein-labeled molecules, have illustrated the linearity of the microchip necessary for quantitative analysis. The design of this biochip permits sensitive, selective and direct measurements of a variety of antigen-antibody formations at very low concentrations. Furthermore, the acquisitions of the qualitative and quantitative results are accomplished rapidly, in about 15 min. These features demonstrate the potential of this antibody-based biochip for simple, rapid and early biomedical diagnostics of cancer.

Abstract
Exposure to pesticides, dyes, and pollutants that mimic the growth promoting effects of estrogen may cause breast cancer. The pesticide DDT and the food colorant Red No. 3 were found to increase the growth of HTB 133 but not estrogen receptor (ER) negative human breast cells (HTB 125) or rat liver epithelial cells (RLE). Red No. 3, beta-estradiol, and DDT increase ER site-specific DNA binding to the estrogen response element in HTB 133 cells and increase cyclin-dependent kinase 2 activity in MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Site-specific DNA binding by p53 in RLE, HTB 125, HTB 133, and MCF-7 cells was increased when they were treated with Red No. 3, which suggests that cellular DNA was damaged by this colorant. Red No. 3 increased binding of the ER from MCF-7 cells to the estrogen-responsive element. Consumption of Red No. 3, which has estrogenlike growth stimulatory properties and may be genotoxic, could be a significant risk factor in human breast carcinogenesis.
