Tuning the magnetic anisotropy energy by external electric fields of CoPt dimers deposited on graphene

In the framework of first-principles calculations, we comprehensively investigate the external electric-field (EF) manipulation of the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of alloyed CoPt dimers deposited on graphene. In particular, we focus on the possibility of tuning the MAE barriers under the action of external EFs and on the effects of Co-substitution. Among the various considered structures, the lowest-energy configurations were the hollow-upright and top-upright, having the Co-atom closest to the graphene layer. The optimal and higher energy configurations were related to the electronic structure through the local density of states and hybridizations between the transition-metal (TM) atoms of the dimer and graphene. In contrast to Co₂/graphene [M. Tanveer, J. Dorantes-Dávila and G. M. Pastor, Phys. Rev. B, 2017, 96(22), 224413.], the CoPt dimer having the hollow-upright ground-state configuration, exhibits a much lower value of the MAE (about |ΔE| ≃ 4.5 meV per atom) and the direction of the magnetization lies in the graphene layer. Moreover, we observe a spin-reorientation transition occurring at ε_z ≃ 0.5 V Å^-1, which opens the possibility of inducing magnetization switching by external electric fields. The microscopic origin of the changes of the MAE associated with changes in the EF has been qualitatively related to the details of the electronic structure by analyzing the local density of states and to the spin-dependent electronic densities close to the Fermi energy. Finally, the role of local environment was quantified by performing electronic structure and magnetic calculations on several higher-energy structure configurations.

Recommendations for working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic (and beyond)

BACKGROUND

There is a growing trend around the globe for having more people working from home, particularly in the current COVID-19 pandemic. Although it is widely implemented in a number of countries and types of companies, it has shown to have multiple challenges.

METHODS

In this article, we provide several recommendations on how to work from home, incorporating information from several publications.

RESULTS

The suggestions are: create routines, be organized, have an adequate home office, enhance your productivity, be responsible, avoid extreme multitasking, facilitate communication and networking, be balanced, use available computer programs and platforms, be creative with remote teaching, explore options for remote research and learn from the challenges.

CONCLUSIONS

These recommendations would help students, professors and researchers around the globe during the current COVID-19 pandemic, and beyond.

Current trends and future perspectives for medical education in Colombia

Colombia is the second largest country in South America. In this article, we provide an overview of medical education in Colombia, including a description of existing public and private medical schools and available undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Medical education in Colombia has evolved through time, following international trends. In addition to 61 undergraduate medical programs, there are 529 postgraduate clinical, 30 PhD, and 131 Master programs in health sciences in Colombia. We identify current challenges and highlight future perspectives for medical education in Colombia.

Propuesta de competencias profesionales para docentes de programas de salud en educación superior

Introducción. Los profesores son reconocidos como parte fundamental de la ejecución del currículo y, por ende, como protagonistas de la calidad educativa.Objetivos. Construir un modelo de competencias profesionales para los docentes de programas de salud en educación superior que permita identificar las necesidades de formación de los profesores y, de esta manera, optimizar el proceso educativo de los estudiantes.Materiales y métodos. Se realizó una investigación cualitativa en la que se hizo una revisión de la bibliografía y se aplicaron unas entrevistas a profesionales médicos que se desempeñaban como docentes de un programa de posgrado en salud; se tuvo como criterio único de inclusión la aceptación del consentimiento informado. Se realizó triangulación de fuentes para garantizar la validez y confiabilidad.Resultados. A partir de la revisión de la bibliografía, se construyeron cuatro ejes de análisis para las entrevistas, se caracterizó al grupo de docentes del programa académico y se estudiaron las respuestas obtenidas. Luego, se construyó un modelo de competencias para profesores que se puede extrapolar a cualquier programa de formación en salud en educación superior con características similares a la del programa investigado.Conclusiones. Este estudio pone de manifiesto la necesidad urgente de generar espacios de formación docente en pedagogía, didáctica y evaluación, por lo que propone un modelo que contempla competencias cognitivas, metodológicas, sociales y personales.

Tuning magnetic anisotropy in metallic multilayers by surface charging: an ab initio study

Our ab initio studies show clear evidence that magnetic anisotropy (MA) and the direction of magnetization in metallic magnetic multilayers can be tailored at once by surface charging. By taking Fe-Pt multilayers as a representative example, we demonstrate that surface charging has a deep effect on the magnitude of the MA, which is composition dependent, achieving remarkably large values for systems featuring a single Fe layer capped with Pt. More intriguing is the behavior of the multilayers capped with iron bilayers, for which surface charging not only affects the value of the anisotropy but an easy-axis switching is also revealed. By analyzing the electronic structure of the magnetic layers and relating the MA to the orbital moment anisotropy, some insights about the origin of the MA from a local perspective can be inferred.

The Integration of Alternative Medicine into Colombian Health Care Services

Objetivo: presentar, mediante el análisis de la literatura, el avance de la integración de la medicina alternativa y complementaria en la prestación de servicios de salud en Colombia y que corresponde a la tendencia mundial en este sentido, lo cual es coherente con la “Estrategia de la OMS 2002-2005” que comprende cuatro objetivos: 1) integrar la Medicina Tradicional y la Medicina Alternativa y Complementaria; 2) promover la seguridad, eficacia y calidad de la MT/MAC; 3) aumentar la disponibilidad y asequibilidad de la MT/MAC con énfasis en las poblaciones más pobres, y 4) fomentar el uso terapéutico sólido de la MT/MAC por parte de consumidores y proveedores. Método: estudio descriptivo basado en artículos encontrados en las bases de datos Scielo, Bireme, Medline y Pubmed para evaluar la integración de la MAC en los servicios de salud en Colombia, Argentina, Brasil y México. Resultados: el uso de las MAC se ha hecho frecuente en el mundo. Pacientes, médicos y otros profesionales de la salud las consideran como opción para utilizarlas como tratamiento complementario o como otra forma de tratar a sus pacientes. Conclusión: un modelo de atención en salud que incluya las MAC puede traer ventajas sobre la humanización de la atención, costos de los medicamentos y uso de servicios de alta complejidad. Es necesario realizar trabajos tendentes a evaluar esta inclusión y desarrollar espacios académicos y de formación en este campo.
