Achievement of Target Gain Larger than Unity in an Inertial Fusion Experiment

On December 5, 2022, an indirect drive fusion implosion on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) achieved a target gain G_{target} of 1.5. This is the first laboratory demonstration of exceeding "scientific breakeven" (or G_{target}>1) where 2.05 MJ of 351 nm laser light produced 3.1 MJ of total fusion yield, a result which significantly exceeds the Lawson criterion for fusion ignition as reported in a previous NIF implosion [H. Abu-Shawareb et al. (Indirect Drive ICF Collaboration), Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 075001 (2022)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.129.075001]. This achievement is the culmination of more than five decades of research and gives proof that laboratory fusion, based on fundamental physics principles, is possible. This Letter reports on the target, laser, design, and experimental advancements that led to this result.

Lawson Criterion for Ignition Exceeded in an Inertial Fusion Experiment

For more than half a century, researchers around the world have been engaged in attempts to achieve fusion ignition as a proof of principle of various fusion concepts. Following the Lawson criterion, an ignited plasma is one where the fusion heating power is high enough to overcome all the physical processes that cool the fusion plasma, creating a positive thermodynamic feedback loop with rapidly increasing temperature. In inertially confined fusion, ignition is a state where the fusion plasma can begin "burn propagation" into surrounding cold fuel, enabling the possibility of high energy gain. While "scientific breakeven" (i.e., unity target gain) has not yet been achieved (here target gain is 0.72, 1.37 MJ of fusion for 1.92 MJ of laser energy), this Letter reports the first controlled fusion experiment, using laser indirect drive, on the National Ignition Facility to produce capsule gain (here 5.8) and reach ignition by nine different formulations of the Lawson criterion.

Hot Spot Evolution Measured by High-Resolution X-Ray Spectroscopy at the National Ignition Facility

Evolution of the hot spot plasma conditions was measured using high-resolution x-ray spectroscopy at the National Ignition Facility. The capsules were filled with DD gas with trace levels of Kr and had either a high-density-carbon (HDC) ablator or a tungsten (W)-doped HDC ablator. Time-resolved measurement of the Kr Heβ spectra, absolutely calibrated by a simultaneous time-integrated measurement, allows inference of the electron density and temperature through observing Stark broadening and the relative intensities of dielectronic satellites. By matching the calculated hot spot emission using a collisional-radiative code to experimental observations, the hot spot size and areal density are determined. These advanced spectroscopy techniques further reveal the effect of W dopant in the ablator on the hot spot parameters for their improved implosion performance.

A new class of focusing crystal shapes for Bragg spectroscopy of small, point-like, x-ray sources in laser produced plasmas

This paper describes a new class of focusing crystal forms for the x-ray Bragg crystal spectroscopy of small, point-like, x-ray sources. These new crystal forms are designed with the aid of sinusoidal spirals, a family of curves, whose shapes are defined by only one parameter, which can assume any real value. The potential of the sinusoidal spirals for the design x-ray crystal spectrometers is demonstrated with the design of a toroidally bent crystal of varying major and minor radii for measurements of the extended x-ray absorption fine structure near the Ta-L3 absorption edge at the National Ignition Facility.

C-37 Music and Cognitive Aging Across Species

Objective

Recent research has revealed that dogs suffer from bestial boredom, which is the degeneration of the brain due to lack of stimulation. To prevent this we looked at everyday stimulation owners could leave for their dogs, such as different types of audio. Within music there are various types that effect dog behavior differently. We not only looked at this stimulation within dogs to help prevent bestial boredom, but then connected this to Alzheimer's patients. There are multiple studies out that show the benefits of music before and during the onset of Alzheimer’s. We find this to be true with dementia in dogs too. A review of the research reveals there to be a lack of consensus regarding the efficacy of music in psychological practice. We believe this is because different music serves different functions, and because of familiarity.

Data Selection

Articles chosen for the meta analysis had to show the connection between music and canines, music and Alzheimer’s patients, and neurodegeneration in humans and within canines.

Data Synthesis

We conducted a meta analysis to review and analyze whether researchers have taken different forms/styles of music into account in their studies.

Conclusions

Music is a significant factor for cognitive functioning and aging in both dogs and humans. There are not many studies out there about the effect of music on dogs. The few studies that are out there used kenneled dogs, therefore studies should also be conducted on dogs with homes to see if familiar music has more of an effect.

Absolute calibration of a time-resolved high resolution x-ray spectrometer for the National Ignition Facility (invited)

A high resolution, Diagnostic Instrument Manipulator (DIM)-based x-ray Bragg crystal spectrometer has been calibrated for and deployed at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) to diagnose plasma conditions in ignition capsules near stagnation times. The spectrometer has two conical crystals in the Hall geometry focusing rays from the Kr Heα, Lyα, and Heβ complexes onto a streak camera, with the physics objectives of measuring time-resolved electron density and temperature through observing Stark broadening and the relative intensities of dielectronic satellites. A third von Hámos crystal that time-integrates the Kr Heα, Heβ and intervening energy range provides in situ calibration for the streak camera signals. The spectrometer has been absolutely calibrated using a microfocus x-ray source, an array of CCD and single-photon-counting detectors, and multiple K- and L-absorption edge filters at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) x-ray laboratory. Measurements of the integrated reflectivity, energy range, and energy resolution for each crystal are discussed. These calibration data provide absolute x-ray signal levels for NIF measurements, enabling precise filter selection and comparisons to simulations.

A new toroidal x-ray crystal spectrometer for the diagnosis of high energy density plasmas at the National Ignition Facility

The here-described spectrometer was developed for the extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy of high-density plasmas at the National Ignition Facility. It employs as the Bragg reflecting element a new type of toroidally bent crystal with a constant and very large major radius R and a much smaller, locally varying, minor radius r. The focusing properties of this crystal and the experimental arrangement of the source and detector make it possible to (a) fulfill the conditions for a perfect imaging of an ideal point source for each wavelength, (b) obtain a high photon throughput, (c) obtain a high spectral resolution by eliminating the effects of source-size broadening, and (d) obtain a one-dimensional spatial resolution with a high magnification perpendicular to the main dispersion plane.

Observation of high soft x-ray drive in large-scale hohlraums at the National Ignition Facility

The first soft x-ray radiation flux measurements from hohlraums using both a 96 and a 192 beam configuration at the National Ignition Facility have shown high x-ray conversion efficiencies of ∼85%-90%. These experiments employed gold vacuum hohlraums, 6.4 mm long and 3.55 mm in diameter, heated with laser energies between 150-635 kJ. The hohlraums reached radiation temperatures of up to 340 eV. These hohlraums for the first time reached coronal plasma conditions sufficient for two-electron processes and coronal heat conduction to be important for determining the radiation drive.

The first measurements of soft x-ray flux from ignition scale Hohlraums at the National Ignition Facility using DANTE (invited)

The first 96 and 192 beam vacuum Hohlraum target experiments have been fielded at the National Ignition Facility demonstrating radiation temperatures up to 340 eV and fluxes of 20 TW/sr as viewed by DANTE representing an ∼20 times flux increase over NOVA/Omega scale Hohlraums. The vacuum Hohlraums were irradiated with 2 ns square laser pulses with energies between 150 and 635 kJ. They produced nearly Planckian spectra with about 30±10% more flux than predicted by the preshot radiation hydrodynamic simulations. To validate these results, careful verification of all component calibrations, cable deconvolution, and software analysis routines has been conducted. In addition, a half Hohlraum experiment was conducted using a single 2 ns long axial quad with an irradiance of ∼2×10(15) W/cm(2) for comparison with NIF Early Light experiments completed in 2004. We have also completed a conversion efficiency test using a 128-beam nearly uniformly illuminated gold sphere with intensities kept low (at 1×10(14) W/cm(2) over 5 ns) to avoid sensitivity to modeling uncertainties for nonlocal heat conduction and nonlinear absorption mechanisms, to compare with similar intensity, 3 ns OMEGA sphere results. The 2004 and 2009 NIF half-Hohlraums agreed to 10% in flux, but more importantly, the 2006 OMEGA Au Sphere, the 2009 NIF Au sphere, and the calculated Au conversion efficiency agree to ±5% in flux, which is estimated to be the absolute calibration accuracy of the DANTEs. Hence we conclude that the 30±10% higher than expected radiation fluxes from the 96 and 192 beam vacuum Hohlraums are attributable to differences in physics of the larger Hohlraums.

Evidence for high-efficiency laser-heated hohlraum performance at 527 nm

A series of experiments conducted on the HELEN laser system [M. J. Norman, Appl. Opt.4120023497], into thermal x-ray generation from hohlraum targets using 527 nm (2omega) wavelength laser light, has shown that it is possible to exceed radiation temperatures previously thought limited by high levels of superthermal or hot electron production or stimulated backscatter. This Letter questions whether the assumptions traditionally applied to hohlraum design with respect to hot plasma filling and the use of 2omega light are too conservative.

Low serum folate but normal homocysteine levels in patients with atherosclerotic vascular disease and matched healthy controls

Mild hyperhomocysteinemia has been considered a cardiovascular risk factor. However, recent prospective studies have not demonstrated that hyperhomocysteinemia or the underlying genetic defect on methylentetrahydrofolate reductase is associated with a higher risk of coronary or peripheral artery disease. We compared serum homocysteine, folate, and vitamin B(12) levels of patients with coronary and peripheral vascular disease with those of age- and sex-matched healthy individuals. Subjects taking multivitamins, with diabetes mellitus, or serum creatinine levels over 1.5 mg/dL were excluded from the study. Homocysteine was measured by fluorimetric high-performance liquid chromatography. Serum folate and vitamin B(12) levels were measured by an ion-capture method. We studied 32 patients with peripheral vascular disease (10 female), aged 69.6 +/- 11 y, 24 age- and sex-matched control subjects, 52 patients with coronary artery disease (7 female), aged 59.5 +/- 10.4 y, and 42 age- and sex-matched control subjects. Serum homocysteine levels were 11.7 +/- 7.4 and 9.3 +/- 4.5 micromol/L in vascular patients and in the control counterparts, respectively (not significant). The levels for coronary patients and the control counterparts were 9.0 +/- 3.9 and 8.6 +/- 3.6 micromol/L, respectively (not significant). Folate levels were 4.48 +/- 2.42 and 7.14 +/- 4.04 ng/mL in vascular patients and control subjects, respectively (P < 0.02); the levels in coronary patients and control counterparts were 5.15 +/- 1.9 and 6.59 +/- 2.49 ng/mL, respectively (P < 0.01). No differences in vitamin B(12) or tocopherol levels were observed between patients and control subjects. There were no differences in homocysteine levels, but lower serum folate levels were observed when comparing patients with atherosclerotic vascular disease and healthy control subjects.

Effects of supplementation with folic acid and antioxidant vitamins on homocysteine levels and LDL oxidation in coronary patients

Hyperhomocysteinemia is an important cardiovascular risk factor. Serum homocysteine levels are specially dependent on folate nutritional status. In addition, the oxidative modification of low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) in the endothelial microenvironment is a damaging factor that can be modified with fat-soluble antioxidant vitamins. The present study was done to assess the effect of a supplementation of folic acid and antioxidant vitamins on homocysteine levels and in vitro LDL oxidation in patients with coronary artery disease. Twenty-three patients with angiographically proven coronary artery disease were given supplements for 15 d consisting of one capsule twice a day of a multivitamin preparation containing 0.65 mg folic acid, 150 mg alpha-tocopherol, 150 mg ascorbic acid, 12.5 mg beta-carotene, and 0.4 microgram vitamin B12. Serum lipids, vitamin and homocysteine levels, and in vitro LDL oxidation were measured before and after the supplementation period. During the supplementation period, serum folate levels increased from 5.0 +/- 1.5 to 10.8 +/- 3.8 ng/mL (P < 0.001), vitamin B12 increased from 317.4 +/- 130.4 to 334.5 +/- 123.8 pg/mL (P < 0.05), and alpha-tocopherol increased from 8.2 +/- 5.1 to 13.7 +/- 7.9 mg/L (P < 0.001). Serum homocysteine levels decreased from 8.7 +/- 4.3 to 6.3 +/- 2.2 mumol/L (P < 0.001). In vitro LDL oxidation decreased from 2.6 +/- 1.1 to 1.6 +/- 1.1 nmol malondialdehyde/mg protein (P < 0.001). In comparing patients with healthy controls, basal levels of folate were lower in the patients, whereas vitamin B12, alpha-tocopherol, and homocysteine levels were similar. No changes in serum lipid levels or body weight were observed. In conclusion, a short-term supplementation with folic acid and antioxidant vitamins can reduce serum homocysteine levels and in vitro LDL oxidation in patients with coronary artery disease.

Comparison of chloral hydrate and midazolam for sedation of neonates for neuroimaging studies

In a crossover study of seven term neonates who had neuroimaging studies, chloral hydrate (75 mg/kg administered orally) was more efficacious (p<0.05) but similar with regard to toxic effects than midazolam (0.2 mg/kg administered intravenously). Thus newer drugs are not necessarily better, and monitoring is essential even after a single oral sedative dose.

Correlation of gastric emptying at one and two hours following formula feeding

The acquisition of gastric emptying (GE) data by scintigraphy has become an important component of the evaluation of the pediatric patient for gastroesophageal reflux (GER). Delay of GE can contribute to ongoing gastric distension and hence increase propensity to reflux. Generally, only 1 h GE is determined during scintigraphy. Infants with GER have variable patterns of symptoms: some have spitting, vomiting, choking, and/or apparent life-threatening events in the immediate post-prandial period only, whereas in others symptoms persist until the time of next feeding. It is not clear whether differential rates of GE contribute towards such disparity of symptoms. We performed this prospective study to determine the correlation between GE at 1 h or 2 h, respectively, and for 2 h following a feeding in 27 infants under one year of age, who were referred for evaluation of GER. Continuous scintigraphy was performed for 2 h following a formula feeding. Gastric emptying at 1 h was calculated as percent of original dose emptied by 60 min; GE at 2 h was calculated as percent of isotope remaining in the stomach at 60 min which was emptied by 120 min. The median GE between 0 to 60 min was 36% (95% CI 26.0-42.0) and median GE of the residual formula between 60 to 120 min was 45% (95% CI 34.3-51.3). The correlation coefficient of GE, at 1 h with total GE over 2 h was 0.75 and of GE during the 2nd h with total GE over 2 h was 0.76. We conclude that routine determination of GE for 2 h continuously does not appear to offer clinically significant additional information.

[Assessment of knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation]

The knowledge about standardized CPR of 41 physicians and 30 7th grade medical students was evaluated using a written multiple choice test. Results showed a severe lack of information about CPR in both groups; the test was approved by 39% of physicians and 10% of medical students. Among physicians, the lower achievements were obtained by traumatologists and the best by internists. The basic level of questions were approved by 63% of physicians and 43% of medical students. The principal deficiencies were on pharmacological management and CPR in trauma. It is concluded that education programs on CPR, similar to those given by the American Heart Association, are urgently needed among physicians and medical students.

Childhood enuresis. A comprehensive treatment program

Enuresis is a common, often misunderstood, condition that affects millions of children in the United States. For most children with primary enuresis, preventing secondary psychological sequelae associated with guilt and shame is an important consideration in the decision whether or not to treat. Because the spontaneous resolution rate is 15 per cent per year, the older the child, the more important treatment becomes. It is important to distinguish primary from secondary enuresis, as most psychogenically induced enuresis is of secondary nature. A careful history can usually elicit the etiology, as well as the exacerbatory factors in both types of conditions, providing direction for treatment. Treatments include pharmacologic, behavioral, and psychotherapeutic. In some cases, surgical intervention of either a urologic or otolaryngologic nature is indicated. A multidimensional approach is often best, and we have described our program with its success rate. Treating the enuretic child can be frustrating, but is usually quite gratifying for the child, parents, and the clinician.

A study of adverse reaction algorithms in a drug surveillance program

To improve agreement among observers, several investigators have recently proposed methods (algorithms) to standardize assessments of causality for presumed adverse drug reactions. We evaluated one such method in the context of an intensive pediatric drug surveillance program. Four observers rated 50 randomly selected case reports drawn from the program, first using only general guidelines and then, several months later, using the strict criteria of the algorithm. Agreement among observers was poor in both study phases. The presence of selected characteristics of adverse events (e.g., major severity) did not improve agreement in either phase of the study. We conclude that routine use of such algorithms in drug surveillance programs is not likely to be of benefit.

Molecular basis for the cardiovascular activities of amrinone and AR-L57

It has been suggested that amrinone and AR-L57 enhance cardiac contractility either by inhibiting phosphodiesterase activity or altering Ca++ homeostasis. Because these novel agents are potentially useful in the management of heart failure, it was of interest to more clearly define their mechanism(s) of action. Amrinone and AR-L57 caused concentration-dependent increases in the contractile states of either perfused guinea-pig hearts or cultured rat cardiomyocytes. To determine whether these actions might result from an increase in sarcolemmal Ca++ movement, the effects of these agents on Ca++ accumulation were studied in a simple system, dog erythrocytes. Both agents promoted erythrocyte Ca++ accumulation in time and concentration-dependent manners, effects that resulted primarily from increased Ca++ entry. However, because these effects were not measurable at inotropic drug concentrations and were apparent only after a 30-min incubation, they did not provide an explanation for the inotropic effects of these agents. Amrinone and AR-L57 inhibited dog heart phosphodiesterase activity (isozyme III) with EC50 values of 23 and 420 microM, respectively; however, only the inotropic responses to amrinone were attenuated by the muscarinic agonist, carbachol, thereby implying a cAMP (cyclic AMP)-dependent mechanism. In cultured ventricular cells, concentrations of amrinone (2 X 10(-4) M) and AR-L57 (3 X 10(-5) M) that caused maximal inotropic responses were associated with the activation of glycogen phosphorylase, but neither drug significantly increased the activation state of cAMP-dependent protein kinase. To further probe the effects of these drugs on intracellular cAMP and Ca++ metabolism, their effects on protein phosphorylation were studied.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
