AUTOMATED DETECTION OF CHILDHOOD OBESITY IN ABDOMINOPELVIC REGION USING THERMAL IMAGING BASED ON DEEP LEARNING TECHNIQUES

Childhood obesity is a preventable disorder which can reduce the risk of the comorbidities linked with an adult obesity. In order to improve the lifestyle of the obese children, early and accurate detection is required by using some non-invasive technique. Thermal imaging helps in evaluation of childhood obesity without injecting any form of harmful radiation in human body. The goal of this proposed research is to evaluate the body surface temperature in abdominopelvic and cervical regions and to evaluate which region is best for predicting childhood obesity using thermal imaging. Next, to customize the ResNet-18 and VGG-19 architecture using transfer learning approach and to obtain the best modified classifier and to study the classification accuracy between normal and obese children. The two-study region which was selected for this study was abdominopelvic and cervical region where the mean skin surface temperature was recorded. From the two selected body regions, abdominopelvic region has depicted highest temperature difference of 10.98% between normal and obese subjects. The proposed modified ResNet-18 model produced an overall accuracy of 94.2% than the modified VGG-19 model (86.5%) for the classification of obese and normal children. Thus, this study can be considered as a non-invasive and cost-effective way for pre-screening the obesity condition in children.

Herbicide Paraquat provokes the stress responses of HPA axis of laboratory mouse, Mus musculus

Paraquat (PQ) is a herbicide and well characterized pneumotoxicant which is also known to induce neurodegeneration in organisms. Aim of this study was to investigate the effect of PQ on hypothalamic - pituitary - adrenal (HPA) axis. PQ was administered i.p.10 mg/kg body weight once a week for 5 weeks in laboratory male mice. Results indicate that SOD activity decreased while catalase activity and nitrate-nitrite level increased significantly in the hypothalamus of PQ treated mice. The expression of both AVP and CRH mRNA in the hypothalamus as well as ir-AVP and ir-CRH increased in the PVN of PQ treated mice compared to control. Immunoreactivity of nNOS and Hsp70 including NF-κB mRNA expression increased in the PVN of PQ treated mice. As expected, serum corticosterone level was also elevated significantly in the herbicide PQ treated mice. From these findings it is concluded that paraquat treatment is capable of activating the HPA axis via upregulating transcription and translation of the hypothalamic neuropeptides AVP and CRH as well as serum corticosterone level. Increase in both oxidative and nitrosative stress in PQ treated mice might be the driver which also contributed to the activation of HPA axis. It seems that stress induced reactive species (ROS, RNS) might be also responsible for the induced expression of NF-κB mRNA and Hsp70 protein which are considered as the reliable markers of certain types of stressors including PQ toxicity.

Screening and partial purification of photoprotective pigment scytonemin from cyanobacterial crusts dwelling on the historical monuments in and around Varanasi, India

In the present investigation, biological crusts from the surface of eight historical monuments of Varanasi, India, were examined for the presence of scytonemin (a cyanobacterial photoprotective pigment) containing cyanobacterial species. Lyngbya sp. and Scytonema sp. were the dominant cyanobacteria present in all crust samples. The absorption spectroscopic data of chlorophyll, carotenoids and scytonemin showed that scytonemin was more abundant than the carotene and chlorophyll in all the crusts. Identification of these compounds was done using UV-Vis spectroscopy and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis. HPLC analysis revealed the presence of scytonemin in seven out of eight samples and peaks of scytonemin with retention time ranging from 1.4-1.9 min with corresponding absorbance maxima at 386, 300 and 252±2 nm. As per our knowledge this is the first report of its kind from monuments of Varanasi. From this study, it can be concluded that synthesis of photoprotective compounds like scytonemin and its derivatives counteract the damaging effects of solar radiation which enable cyanobacteria to colonize and inhabit almost all kinds of habitats, including extreme lithic habitats, such as rocks and walls of monuments which face prolonged high intensity solar radiation.

Hyperglycemia and high nitric oxide level induced oxidative stress in the brain and molecular alteration in the neurons and glial cells of laboratory mouse, Mus musculus

Chronic hyperglycemia (glucotoxicity) is reported to have detrimental effects on various brain functions leading to neurodegenerative changes. However, the effect of hyperglycemia in combination with high nitric oxide (NO) level (reported to be increased during glucotoxicity), on brain functions is not clear yet. The present study was designed to investigate the effects of hyperglycemic drug Streptozotocin (STZ) and NO donor Sodium nitroprusside (SNP) on the brain of laboratory mouse, Mus musculus. Effects of these conditions were studied on the markers of oxidative stress, NF-κB signalling and the markers of neuronal and glial cell activation/inflammation. Results indicate increased level of MDA and altered antioxidant enzymes activity in both the treated groups compared to control but high levels of AGEs, AOPP and AR activity (markers of diabetic complications) were observed in STZ group only. On the other hand, while STZ group showed decreased IL-6 level, it was increased in SNP group but IFN-ϒ level increased in both the treated groups compared to control. Further, in addition to alterations in the expressions of iNOS, IKKβ, IKBα and NF-κB subunits (RelA-p65/RelB-p50) observed in the neurons and glial cells of different brain regions (hypothalamus, basolateral amygdala and cerebral cortex), enhanced expression of microglial CD11b and astrocytic GFAP was also found in both the treated groups compared to control. Present findings led us to conclude that both hyperglycemia and high NO level causes oxidative stress in addition to molecular alteration in the neurons and glial cells. It is suggested that high blood glucose and NO level induced oxidative stress may lead to neuroinflammation possibly via NF-κB signalling.

Vision-based proximity detection in retinal surgery

In retinal surgery, surgeons face difficulties such as indirect visualization of surgical targets, physiological tremor, and lack of tactile feedback, which increase the risk of retinal damage caused by incorrect surgical gestures. In this context, intraocular proximity sensing has the potential to overcome current technical limitations and increase surgical safety. In this paper, we present a system for detecting unintentional collisions between surgical tools and the retina using the visual feedback provided by the opthalmic stereo microscope. Using stereo images, proximity between surgical tools and the retinal surface can be detected when their relative stereo disparity is small. For this purpose, we developed a system comprised of two modules. The first is a module for tracking the surgical tool position on both stereo images. The second is a disparity tracking module for estimating a stereo disparity map of the retinal surface. Both modules were specially tailored for coping with the challenging visualization conditions in retinal surgery. The potential clinical value of the proposed method is demonstrated by extensive testing using a silicon phantom eye and recorded rabbit in vivo data.
