Visualize the quality of frozen fish using fluorescence imaging aided with excitation-emission matrix

The quality monitoring of frozen marine products has become essential in the fishery industry, where efficient and effective quality assurance is becoming increasingly important. In this study, we proposed a novel method of evaluating fish quality by combining the fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) with imaging techniques to visualize the spatial-temporal changes of freshness indices such as K-value and taste component IMP content. The result showed that the distribution of K-value and IMP content could be visualized with accuracy of R² = 0.78 and R² = 0.83, respectively. Furthermore, this innovative approach was applied to differentiate burnt meat, which is a type of abnormal meat found in many types of fish, and it was found that burnt meat could be detected even when in a frozen condition.

Effects of facial color on the subliminal processing of fearful faces

Recent studies have suggested that both configural information, such as face shape, and surface information is important for face perception. In particular, facial color is sufficiently suggestive of emotional states, as in the phrases: "flushed with anger" and "pale with fear." However, few studies have examined the relationship between facial color and emotional expression. On the other hand, event-related potential (ERP) studies have shown that emotional expressions, such as fear, are processed unconsciously. In this study, we examined how facial color modulated the supraliminal and subliminal processing of fearful faces. We recorded electroencephalograms while participants performed a facial emotion identification task involving masked target faces exhibiting facial expressions (fearful or neutral) and colors (natural or bluish). The results indicated that there was a significant interaction between facial expression and color for the latency of the N170 component. Subsequent analyses revealed that the bluish-colored faces increased the latency effect of facial expressions compared to the natural-colored faces, indicating that the bluish color modulated the processing of fearful expressions. We conclude that the unconscious processing of fearful faces is affected by facial color.

The effects of facial color and inversion on the N170 event-related potential (ERP) component

Faces are important for social interaction because much can be perceived from facial details, including a person's race, age, and mood. Recent studies have shown that both configural (e.g. face shape and inversion) and surface information (e.g. surface color and reflectance properties) are important for face perception. Therefore, the present study examined the effects of facial color and inverted face properties on event-related potential (ERP) responses, particularly the N170 component. Stimuli consisted of natural and bluish-colored faces. Faces were presented in both upright and upside down orientations. An ANOVA was used to analyze N170 amplitudes and verify the effects of the main independent variables. Analysis of N170 amplitude revealed the significant interactions between stimulus orientation and color. Subsequent analysis indicated that N170 was larger for bluish-colored faces than natural-colored faces, and N170 to natural-colored faces was larger in response to inverted stimulus as compared to upright stimulus. Additionally, a multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) investigated face-processing dynamics without any prior assumptions. Results distinguished, above chance, both facial color and orientation from single-trial electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Decoding performance for color classification of inverted faces was significantly diminished as compared to an upright orientation. This suggests that processing orientation is predominant over facial color. Taken together, the present findings elucidate the temporal and spatial distribution of orientation and color processing during face processing.

Neural processes in pseudo perceptual rivalry: an ERP and time-frequency approach

Necker cube is one of the ambiguous figures that is physically a static image but can be alternately perceived in two different perspectives. A great deal of debate exists regarding ambiguous figures that induce spontaneous switching between rival percepts. To investigate the time course of neural processes underlying such perceptual rivalry, we recorded electroencephalograms associated with participants' perceptions of a Necker cube under ambiguous and unambiguous conditions, using a modified discontinuous-presentation method. Each condition consisted of two stimuli presented consecutively, starting with an unambiguous stimulus in both conditions. The second stimulus was either ambiguous (ambiguous condition) or unambiguous (control condition). We compared endogenous reversal activity of ambiguous stimuli with exogenous reversals. As a result, we found that the right-occipital beta-band activity (16-26 Hz) increased 100-150 ms and 350-450 ms after the onset of the ambiguous stimulus only when the perception of the ambiguous stimulus differed from that of the first stimulus. These results indicate that activity in the right-occipital total beta band reflects endogenous switching between rivaling percepts.

Acquisition of color opponent representation by a three-layered neural network model

This paper discusses color representation in the visual system by analysis of a three-layered neural network model. The model incorporates physiological knowledge of color representation at the sensor level (broad-band trichromatic representation by cones) and the higher level (narrow-band color representation by color-coded cells in V4). We trained the model to perform a mapping between these color representations by the back propagation algorithm and analyzed the acquired characteristics of the hidden units. It turned out that the hidden units learned characteristics similar to those of the color opponent cells found in the visual system. It was concluded that the R-G and Y-B color opponent representations reflect the efficiency of the color representation in the visual system from investigations on the efficiency of color representation in the hidden layer and on the capability of the color recognition task of the model.
