Abstract
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare malignant cutaneous neuroendocrine tumour affecting mainly elderly patients and is more common in the West than in Asia. It is associated with Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV), immunosuppression, and ultraviolet light. In this study, we retrospectively investigated the first series of MCC from Taiwan and identified 19 cases from three tertiary centres. All patients were males with a median age of 67.5. Twelve (63%) cases occurred in the extremities, with one unique case presenting initially as nodal metastasis of unknown primary. Immunohistochemically, the great majority of tumours expressed CK20 (89%), synaptophysin (89%), and INSM1 (84%), with none positive for TTF1. Eleven (58%) cases were positive for MCPyV by immunohistochemistry (clone CM2B4). All patients were treated with excision, including four with additional radiotherapy and one with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Nodal status and treatment modalities significantly affected survival. The median survival time of MCPyV-positive cases was much longer than the negative cases (median 40 vs. 10 months). In summary, we presented the first report on the clinicopathological features of MCC in Taiwan, with 58% cases associated with MCPyV. The prognosis of patients with MCPyV-positive tumours was better than those negative for MCPyV.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Follicular lymphoma (FL) is usually a nodal lymphoma expressing CD10, rarely with leukaemic presentation (FL-LP). MATERIALS AND METHODS We searched for FL-LP in our institution from 2000 to 2018 and characterised the neoplastic cells by flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry and fluorescence in situ hybridization. Thirteen (6.1%) of 212 FL cases were FL-LP, all de novo neoplasms. The leukaemic cells were small in 12 cases and large in one. All had concurrent FL, mostly (92%; 12/13) low-grade. The single case with large leukaemic cells had a concurrent primary splenic low-grade FL and a double-hit large B-cell lymphoma in the marrow. RESULTS CD10 was expressed in the leukaemic cells in 38% (5/13) cases by flow cytometry and in 77% (10/13) cases in tumours (p= 0.0471). IGH/BCL2 reciprocal translocation was identified in 85% (11/13) cases. Most patients were treated with chemotherapy. In a median follow-up time of 36 months, nine patients were in complete remission. The 2- and 5-year survival rates were at 100% and 83%, respectively. In this study, we characterised a series of de novo FL-LP in Taiwan. All patients had concurrent nodal and/or tissue tumours, which might suggest that these patients seek medical help too late. CONCLUSION The lower CD10 expression rate by flow cytometry than by immunohistochemistry might be due to different epitopes for these assays. Alternatively, loss of CD10 expression might play a role in the pathogenesis of leukaemic change. The clinical course of FL-LP could be aggressive, but a significant proportion of the patients obtained complete remission with chemotherapy.

Abstract
Nontraumatic acute anterior cord syndrome caused by disc herniation occurring in the cervical spine is rare. A 39-year-old man presented with a sharp burning pain in bilateral upper limbs and progressive paraplegia after a nap with neck extension. He had impaired sensation of pain and temperature with preservation of proprioception and light touch below the C6 level. The magnetic resonance imaging showed focal hyperintensity of the anterior cord at the C5-C7 level and central herniation of C5-6 and C6-7 discs. An anterior discectomy of C5-6 and C6-7 was conducted because of the poor response to a high dose of steroid. A postoperative intensive rehabilitation treatment was also performed. The patient showed significant improvement in motor and sensory function three months postoperatively. Long-term repetitive neck extension should be avoided because it may be a risk for degenerative spondylotic change and cord compression disorders. Surgical intervention should be considered in a patient with anterior cord syndrome associated with nontraumatic cervical disc herniation. (Hong Kong j.emerg.med. 2013;20:389-391)

Abstract
One of the most economically-viable processes for the bioconversion of many types of lignocellulosic wastes is represented by edible mushroom cultivation. Lentinula edodes, Volvariella volvacea and Pleurotus sajor-caju are three important commercially cultivated mushrooms which exhibit varying abilities to utilise different lignocellulosics as growth substrate. Examination of the lignocellulolytic enzyme profiles of the three species show this diversity to be reflected in qualitative variations in the major enzymic determinants (i.e. cellulases, ligninases) required for substrate bioconversion. For example, L. edodes, which is cultivated on highly lignified substrates such as wood or sawdust, produces two extracellular enzymes which have been associated with lignin depolymerisation in other fungi, (manganese peroxidase and laccase). Conversely, V. volvacea, which prefers high cellulose-, low lignin-containing substrates produces a family of cellulolytic enzymes including at least five endoglucanases, five cellobiohydrolases and two β-glucosidases, but none of the recognised lignin-degrading enzymes.

Abstract
Two irreversible inhibitors, iodoacetamide and diethylpyrocarbonate, were used to select intraspecific fusion products of two mushroom species, Coprinus cinereus and Schizophyllum commune. Iodoacetamide was the more suitable inhibitor because it gave a low breakage frequency and low survival rate of the cells in the inactivation experiments. Fusion-induced by polyethylene glycol and electro-fusion were compared and, under optimal conditions, gave fusion frequencies of 16.7% to 50.0% and 6.9% to 8.4%, respectively. All fusion progeny were heterokaryons (dikaryons) and had clamp connections. There were no differences in the morphology and fruiting ability of the fusion progeny and those of the heterokaryons generated from mating.

Abstract
A direct blunt injury to the cervical spine is a clinically crucial issue and misdiagnosis of adjacent tissue lesion of neck may lead to poor outcomes. We present a patient with ankylosing spondylitis, who suffered from a perforation in pharynx following a neck injury. The extent of the occult right pharyngeal wall perforation may have initially been less and hence undetectable by radiological screening, either X-ray radiology or computed tomography. The combination of continuation of oral feeding and ligamentous ossification/fragility of the cervical spine accounted for the resultant pharyngeal perforation. (Hong Kong j.emerg.med. 2014;21:44-47)

Abstract
Stress distributions in the strained InGaAs PMOSFET with source/drain (S/D) stressors for various lengths and widths were studied with 3D stress simulations. The resulting mobility improvement was analyzed. Compressive stress along the transport direction was found to dominate the hole mobility improvement for the wide width devices. Stress along the vertical direction perpendicular to the gate oxide was found to affect the mobility the least, while stress along the width direction enhanced in the middle wide width region. The impact of channel width and length on performance improvements such as the mobility gain was analyzed using the Kubo-Greenwood formalism accounting for nonpolar hole-phonon scattering (acoustic and optical), surface roughness scattering, polar phonon scattering, alloy scattering and remote phonon scattering. The novelty of this paper is studying the impact of channel width and length on the performance of InGaAs PMOSFET such as mobility and exploring physical insight for scaling the future III-V CMOS devices.

Abstract
The novel thin film solar cell with a nanoplate structure that can solve the conflict between the light absorption and the carrier transport in amorphous silicon thin film solar cell was investigated by TCAD simulations. This new structure has n-type amorphous silicon nanoplate array on the substrate, and p-type amorphous silicon-carbon as window layer and intrinsic amorphous silicon as absorption layer are sequentially grown along the surface of each n-type amorphous silicon nanoplate. Under AM 1.5 G sunlight illumination, the light is absorbed along the vertical direction of nanoplate while the carrier transport is along the horizontal direction. Therefore, nanoplate with the larger height can absorb most of the sunlight. The advantage of this novel structure is that the thickness of the solar cell can be used as thin as possible for effective transport of photo-generated carriers in comparison with the planer one.

Abstract
The gap state density of nano-crystalline silicon active layers on a flexible substrate was redistributed with mechanical bending. The weak or broken bonds may contribute to the redistribution of trap states. During mechanical strain, the deep states redistributed in a Gaussian distribution, and are dissimilar to ordinary acceptor-like deep states, which manifest with exponential distributions. We conclude that the gap state density with TCAD modeling under mechanical strain is the fundamental reliability issue for the development of flexible electronics.

Abstract
The novel thin-film solar cell was investigated with a nanorod structure that could solve the conflict between light absorption and carrier transport in the amorphous silicon (a-Si)/amorphous silicon-germanium (a-SiGe) tandem thin-film solar cell. This structure has an n-type a-Si nanorod array on the substrate, and an a-SiOx p-layer and an a-SiGe i-layer are sequentially grown along the surface of each n-type a-Si nanorod, for the bottom cell. After the above bottom-cell process, a similar process is used to fabricate an amorphous Si p-i-n top cell on the bottom cell. Under sunlight illumination, the light is absorbed along the vertical direction of the nanorod, but as the carrier transport is along the horizontal direction, the nanorod may absorb most of the sunlight. In the meantime, the solar cell is still thin enough for the effective transport of photogenerated carriers.

Abstract
Mung bean sprouts (Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek) are a commonly consumed vegetable in Asian countries. Anthracnose lesions on mung bean sprouts (cv. You-lu-dou from Mayamar) were found in an indoor sprouting facility in Taichung County, Taiwan in May of 2009. The incidence of disease exceeded 90% in some lots. Infected hypocotyls had smooth, diamond-shaped to fusiform brown spots, which became further depressed and enlarged with age. A fungus was isolated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) from symptomatic hypocotyls after surface sterilization in 0.6% NaOCl. Fungal colonies were initially salmon to orange in color and became greenish gray on the surface within a week. Setae were not produced in acervuli that developed on PDA. Conidia in the acervuli were one-celled, cylindrical, and hyaline with an average length and width of 14.8 (7.0 to 23.7) × 4.9 (3.3 to 6.7) μm (n = 53). The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region was amplified with primers ITS1 and ITS4 (4). The sequence was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. GQ889269). The sequence was 99% identical to that of ATCC 56816 strain of Glomerella acutata (Guerber & J. C. Correll), the teleomorph of Colletotrichum acutatum (J. H. Simmonds) over a 522-bp alignment. Thus, the mung bean pathogen was identified as C. acutatum based on morphological (1) and molecular characters. Pathogenicity of the strain was determined by inoculating mung bean seeds from I-Mei Foods Co. (imported from Australia). The seeds were disinfested in 0.6% NaOCl for 10 min, rinsed with sterile distilled water twice, and immersed in a conidial suspension (1.5 × 104 conidia/ml) of C. acutatum for 10 min. Fifteen inoculated seeds were placed on moistened paper towels, distributed into three flasks, and stored in the dark at 32°C. Symptoms similar to those observed on the original sprouts appeared 3 days later on the hypocotyls of the seedlings and all seedlings were infected by day five. Conidia of C. acutatum were produced on all lesions and colonies of C. acutatum were recovered from symptomatic tissues, fulfilling Koch's postulates. Controls (seed immersed in water) remained symptomless. The pathogenicity test was repeated with similar results. The pathogen has been recorded on mung bean sprouts in Korea (2) and on other Vigna spp. in India (3). To our knowledge, this is the first report of sprout rot of mung bean caused by C. acutatum in Taiwan. References: (1) B. J. Dyko and J. E. M. Mordue. Abstract
The xanthine oxidase (XOD) inhibitory activity and anti-hyperuricemia effect in mice of Cinnamomum osmophloeum, which is an endemic tree in Taiwan, were evaluated in this study. The results demonstrated that the essential oil of C. osmophloeum leaves presented the strongest XOD inhibition activity (IC(50)=16.3 μg/ml); however, no significant XOD inhibition activities were found in ethanolic and hot water extracts. Furthermore, among the main compounds of essential oil, the cinnamaldehyde exhibited the potent XOD inhibition activity with an IC(50)=8.4 μg/ml. Besides, the reducing serum uric acid levels in oxonate-induced mice by cinnamaldehyde were further investigated. The hyperuricemic mice were oral administrated cinnamaldehyde at a dosage of 150 mg/kg, the uric acid value in serum was reduced from 5.25±0.63 to 2.10±0.04 mg/dl, the levels of serum uric acid in mice was lowered down by 84.48% as compared to the hyperuricemic control group. Based on the results obtained in this study, cinnamaldehyde may be a potential lead compound for developing the pharmaceutic for anti-hyperuricemia agent.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of (18)F-fluorothymidine (FLT) PET/CT for imaging pancreatic adenocarcinoma. METHODS This was a pilot study of five patients (four males, one female) with newly diagnosed and previously untreated pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Patients underwent FLT PET/CT, (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/CT, and contrast-enhanced CT scanning before treatment. The presence of cancer was confirmed by histopathological analysis at the time of scanning in all five patients. The degree of FLT and FDG uptake at the primary tumor site was assessed using visual interpretation and semi-quantitative SUV analyses. RESULTS The primary tumor size ranged from 2.5 x 2.8 cm to 3.5 x 7.0 cm. The SUV of FLT uptake within the primary tumor ranged from 2.1 to 3.1. Using visual interpretation, the primary cancer could be detected from background activity in two of five patients (40%) on FLT PET/CT. By comparison, FDG uptake was higher in each patient with a SUV range of 3.4 to 10.8, and the primary cancer could be detected from background in all five patients (100%). CONCLUSIONS In this pilot study of five patients with primary pancreatic adenocarcinoma, FLT PET/CT scanning showed poor lesion detectability and relatively low levels of radiotracer uptake in the primary tumor.

Abstract
Electrocardiogram showing Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) pattern in an asymptomatic patient is common, but it is difficult to assess the potential risk of sudden death in such cases. Although the incidence of sudden death in these patients is extremely low, an interventional approach is suggested for all patients despite its controversial nature. Syncope, despite being induced by various mechanisms, has been considered an alarming sign of sudden death of WPW syndrome. We describe a 16-year-old female patient with an electrocardiogram that demonstrated a WPW pattern combined with unexplained syncope. None of the examinations, including biochemical profiles, brain computed tomography, transthoracic echocardiography, head-up tilt table test and exercise electrocardiogram, clarified her syncope. Consequently, no further electrophysiologic study was performed for this patient. Unfortunately, the patient suffered sudden death while running. The case highlights the need for vigilance when unexplained syncope combined with WPW syndrome. Such cases have high risk of sudden death, and thus, further interventional study and treatment is indicated.

Abstract
The maintenance of circulating blood volume within an optimal range is necessary for haemodialysis patients to avoid circulating complications, including over-hydration and dehydration. Inferior vena cava diameter (IVCD) estimation is a non-invasive method to obtain a well correlation with the intravascular fluid status, and it may get a reliable ideal dry weight (DW) for chronic haemodialysis patients. We try to analysis the life quality changes and circulating complication in chronic haemodialysis patients who adjust DW with this tool in comparing with the traditional method. A total of 100 chronic haemodialysis patients, ranging from 26 to 77 years old, were involved in this study. They are randomly divided into study (n = 50) and control group (n= 50). All of them received the IVCD estimation by echocardiography every month for 3 months. The patients in the study group adjusted the DW with the IVCD estimated by echocardiographic method, however, patients in the control group with the traditional method. The quality of life (QOL) was evaluated with the short form 36 questionnaire (SF-36) in the beginning and the end of the study. The scores of physical functioning (PF), role limitation-physical (RP), general health (GH) and role limitation-emotional (RE) have much improvement in the patients of the study group than those in the control group. Besides, the occurrence of clinical events due to circulating complications during the study period showed significant reduction in the extents of hypotension, gastrointestinal upset, discontinuation of haemodialysis, muscular cramps, tinnitus, headache and chest discomforts with electrocardiographic changes; and these effects, especially, are significant in the patients with over-dehydrated status, which with the IVCD < 8 mm/m2 detected by echocardiographic method. The study demonstrated that ideal DW estimated by echocardiographic method not only improved the QOL but also reduced the circulating complications during haemodialysis for chronic haemodialysis patients.

Abstract
A biosensor for detecting the toxicity of polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated soil has been successfully constructed using an immobilized recombinant bioluminescent bacterium, GC2 (lac::luxCDABE), which constitutively produces bioluminescence. The biosurfactant, rhamnolipids, was used to extract a model PAH, phenanthrene, and was found to enhance the bioavailability of phenanthrene via an increase in its rate of mass transfer from sorbed soil to the aqueous phase. The monitoring of phenanthrene toxicity was achieved through the measurement of the decrease in bioluminescence when a sample extracted with the biosurfactant was injected into the minibioreactor. The concentrations of phenanthrene in the aqueous phase were found to correlate well with the corresponding toxicity data obtained by using this toxicity biosensor. In addition, it was also found that the addition of glass beads to the agar media enhanced the stability of the immobilized cells. This biosensor system using a biosurfactant may be applied as an in-situ biosensor to detect the toxicity of hydrophobic contaminants in soils and for performance evaluation of PAH degradation in soils.

Abstract
The antibacterial activities of the essential oils from leaves of two Cinnamomum osmophloeum clones (A and B) and their chemical constituents were investigated in this study. The nine strains of bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella sp., and Vibrio parahemolyticus, were used in the antibacterial tests. Results from the antibacterial tests demonstrated that the indigenous cinnamon B leaf essential oils had an excellent inhibitory effect. The MICs (minimum inhibitory concentrations) of the B leaf oil were 500 microg/ml against both K. pneumoniae and Salmonella sp. and 250 microg/ml against the other seven strains of bacteria. Cinnamaldehyde possessed the strongest antibacterial activity compared to the other constituents of the essential oils. The MICs of cinnamaldehyde against the E. coli, P. aeruginosa, E. faecalis, S. aureus, S. epidermidis, MRSA, K. pneumoniae, Salmonella sp., and V. parahemolyticus were 500, 1000, 250, 250, 250, 250, 1000, 500, and 250 microg/ml, respectively. These results suggest that C. osmophloeum leaf essential oil and cinnamaldehyde are beneficial to human health, having the potential to be used for medical purposes and to be utilized as anti-bacterial additives in making paper products.

Abstract
The antioxidant activity of extracts from bark and heartwood of Acacia confusa was evaluated by various antioxidant assays, including free radical and superoxide radical scavenging assays and lipid peroxidation assay as well as hydroxyl radical-induced DNA strand scission assay. In addition, an ex vivo antioxidant assay using a flow cytometric technique was also employed in this study. The results indicate that both bark and heartwood extracts clearly have strong antioxidant effects. Similar inhibitory activities for each test sample were found for both 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical generation and lipid peroxidation. As for the superoxide radical scavenging activity, the heartwood extract was more effective than the bark extract. Furthermore, the heartwood extract protected PhiX174 supercoiled DNA against strand scission induced by ultraviolet photolysis of H2O2, and it reduced the amounts of intracellular hydrogen peroxide, a reactive oxygen species, when it was co-incubated with human promyelocytic leukemia (HL-60) cells under oxidative stress.

Abstract
The association of misfolded proteins, or aggregation, is a critical problem in a number of human diseases as well during the expression, refolding, formulation, and delivery of therapeutic proteins. In this study, we investigate lysozyme precipitation with hydrogen exhange using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS). We show that MS can reveal the presence of conformational distributions, albeit without the detailed structural information afforded by NMR. Further, we find that increases in precipitant concentration alter the structure and composition of precipitates. The selective unfolding of one portion of the protein in these precipitates is correlated with hydrogen exchange patterns observed under nonprecipitating conditions and in other studies of lysozyme.

Abstract
Antimite activity of essential oils and their components obtained from Taiwania cryptomerioides Hayata heartwood against Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Trouessart) and Dermatophagoides farinae Hughes was investigated in this study. Results from antimite tests demonstrated that the essential oil extracted from T. cryptomerioides heartwood had miticidal activity against D. pteronyssinus and D. farinae with a mortality of 67.0 and 36.7% at the dosage of 12.6 microg/cm2 after 48 h. Alpha-cadinol possessed the strongest antimite activity compared with other components of the T. cryptomeioides heartwood essential oil. The rectified mortalities of D. pteronyssinus and D. farinae were 100% for alpha-cadinol at the dosage of 6.3 microg/cm2. The order of antimite activity of four dominant constituents was alpha-cadinol > T-muurolol > ferruginol > T-cadinol. Paired Student's t-tests showed that there were significant differences between the rectified mortality of alpha-cadinol, T-muurolol, ferruginol and that of T-cadinol at the dosage of 6.3 microg/cm2 after 48 h.

Abstract
Antitermitic activity of Taiwania (Taiwania cryptomerioides Hayata) against Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki was demonstrated in laboratory tests. Blocks of sapwood and heartwood from T. cryptomerioides exhibited antitermitic activity. Bioassays revealed that heartwood essential oil exhibited the highest antitermitic activity, followed by sapwood essential oil and then the n-C6H14 soluble fraction when tested at 10 mg/g. The order of termite mortality of three compounds purified from n-C6H14 soluble extracts of heartwood was cedrol > alpha-cadinol > ferruginol. The termite resistance of T. cryptomerioides wood can be attributed to the termiticidal activity of cedrol and alpha-cadinol.

Abstract
The cytotoxicity of the dominant lignans and sesquiterpenoids from Taiwania (Taiwania cryptomerioides Hayata) was investigated. Three human tumor cells including A-549 lung carcinoma. MCF-7 breast adenocarcinoma and HT-29 colon adenocarcinoma were selected to illustrate the structure-cytotoxicity relationships of Taiwania's dominant compounds. Taiwanin A, taiwanin E and dimethylmatairesinol exhibited significant cytotoxicity against three human tumor cells. Among them, taiwanin A possesses the strongest cytotoxic activity. In addition, the morphology-based evaluation, flow cytometric analysis, and DNA fragmentation assays demonstrated that the tumor cell death induced by taiwanin A was due to apoptosis.

Abstract
A whole-cell biosensor was developed for the detection of gas toxicity using a recombinant bioluminescent Escherichia coli harboring a lac::luxCDABE fusion. Immobilization of the cells within LB agar has been done to maintain the activity of the microorganisms and to detect the toxicity of chemicals through the direct contact with gas. Benzene, known as a representative volatile organic compound, was chosen as a sample toxic gas to evaluate the performance of this biosensor based on the bioluminescent response. This biosensor showed a dose-dependent response, and was found to be reproducible. The immobilizing matrices of this biosensor were stored at 4 degrees C and were maintained for at least a month without any noticeable change in its activity. The optimal temperature for sensing was 37 degrees C. A small size of this sensor kit has been successfully fabricated, and found to be applicable as a disposable and portable biosensor to monitor the atmospheric environment of a workplace in which high concentrations of toxic gases could be discharged.

Abstract
The edible straw mushroom, Volvariella volvacea, produces a multicomponent enzyme system consisting of endo-1,4-beta-glucanase, cellobiohydrolase, and beta-glucosidase for the conversion of cellulose to glucose. The highest levels of endoglucanase and cellobiohydrolase were recorded in cultures containing microcrystalline cellulose (Avicel) or filter paper, while lower but detectable levels of activity were also produced on carboxymethyl cellulose, cotton wool, xylitol, or salicin. Biochemical analyses of different culture fractions in cultures exhibiting peak enzyme production revealed that most of the endoglucase was present either in the culture filtrate (45.8% of the total) or associated with the insoluble pellet fraction remaining after centrifugation of homogenized mycelia (32.6%). Cellobiohydrolase exhibited a similar distribution pattern, with 58.9% of the total enzyme present in culture filtrates and 31.0% associated with the pellet fraction. Conversely, most beta-glucosidase activity (63.9% of the total) was present in extracts of fungal mycelia whereas only 9.4% was detected in culture filtrates. The endoglucanase and beta-glucosidase distribution patterns were confirmed by confocal laser scanning microscopy combined with immunolabelling. Endoglucanase was shown to be largely cell wall associated or located extracellularly, with the highest concentrations being present in a region 1 to 2 microm wide immediately adjacent to the outer surface of (and possibly including) the hyphal wall and extending 60 to 70 microm from the hyphal tip. Immunofluorescence patterns indicated little if any intracellular endoglucanase. Most beta-glucosidase was located intracellularly in the apical area extending 60 to 70 microm below the hyphal tip, although enzyme was also evident in the extracellular region extending approximately 15 microm all around the hyphal tip and trailing back along the length of the hypha. The regions of the hypha located some distance from the apical region appeared to be devoid of intracellular beta-glucosidase, and the enzyme appears to be associated almost exclusively with, or located on the outside surface of, the hyphal wall.

Abstract
In this study, rabbits were used to evaluate the sutured wound reaction with Dexon or nylon in the conjunctival flap 1, 4, 7, 14 and 28 days after trabeculectomy surgery with or without the use of mitomycin-C. Four major treated groups were used to compare their wound healing reaction; group 1--nylon-suture and non-mitomycin treatment; group 2--nylon-suture and mitomycin treatment; group 3--Dexon-suture and non-mitomycin treatment; group 4--Dexon-suture and mitomycin treatment. One day after surgery, the number of polymorphs was the greatest most in the nylon-sutured and non-mitomycin treated tissues (86 +/- 2). Four days after surgery, the number of polymorphs was the greatest most in Dexon-sutured and non-mitomycin treated tissues (109 +/- 87). The number of fibroblasts was the greatest most in nylon-sutured and non-mitomycin treated tissues (111 +/- 23). Seven days after surgery, the number of polymorphs was the greatest most in Dexon-sutured and mitomycin treated tissues (32 +/- 12). The number of fibroblasts was the greatest most in nylon-sutured and non-mitomycin treated tissues (126 +/- 15). Fourteen days after surgery, the number of fibroblasts was the greatest most in Dexon-sutured and non-mitomycin tissues (43 +/- 10). The number of goblet cells was the greatest most in nylon-sutured and non-mitomycin treated tissues (4 +/- 2). Twenty-eight days after surgery, the number of fibroblasts was the greatest most in Dexon-sutured and mitomycin treated tissues (40 +/- 15). The number of goblet cells was the greatest most in nylon-sutured and non-mitomycin treated tissues (4 +/- 2). Our conclusions are as follows: 1). The concentration of mitomycin in conjunctival wound edge should be maintained at as low a level as possible because the mitomycin will delay the wound healing process; 2). Nylon material is better than Dexon for conjunctival wound suture because nylon could induce a great quantity of fibroblasts before Dexon did.

Abstract
Anatomic changes of neuronal profiles in response to chronic alteration of peripheral targets were investigated in the nucleus ambiguus (NA) of cats. Unilateral vagal-hypoglossal nerve anastomosis was performed by suturing the transected proximal stump of the vagus nerve to the transected distal stump of the hypoglossal nerve. After comparing horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-labeled neurons on the ipsilateral operated side of the NA with the contralateral unoperated NA and the NA following transection and reuniting to the vagus itself, a remarkable ramification and elongation of the dendritic trees was observed in the HRP-positive neurons on the ipsilateral NA. Quantitative analysis of neuronal profiles revealed that the number of the medium and large neurons on the ipsilateral NA was greater than the contralateral NA and the NA following autologous suturing of the vagus. Comparisons of variable dendritic lengths of the medium and large neurons on the ipsilateral NA revealed longer distances and more branches of the tertiary and perisomatic dendrites than those of the contralateral NA and the NA ipsilateral to autologous reunion. Our results suggest that remarkable sprouting and elongation of the dendritic trees as well as cell supernumerary occurred in the dominant NA motoneurons ipsilateral to the nerve anastomosis. In conclusion, there is a trophic influence in the tongue musculature, which was retrogradely transported to the NA neurons via the regenerating axons and caused the morphological changes in the NA in response to the rerouting of efferents from the vagus nerve to the hypoglossal nerve to innervate intimate tongue musculature.

Abstract
We have employed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of hydrogen exchange to identify residue-level conformational changes in hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) as induced by salt precipitation. Deuterated HEWL was dissolved into a phosphate (H2O) buffer and precipitated at pH 2.1 upon addition of solid KSCN or (ND4)2SO4, allowing isotope labeling of unfolded regions. After 1 h, each precipitate was then dissolved at pH 3.8 to initiate refolding and preserve labeling and subsequently purified for NMR analysis. HEWL precipitated by 1.0 M KSCN exhibited increased hydrogen exchange at 14 residues out of 42 normally well-protected in the native state. Of the affected residues, 9 were situated in the beta-sheet/loop domain. A similar, though less extensive, effect was observed at 0.2 M KSCN. Precipitation by 1.2 M (ND4)2SO4 resulted in none of the changes detected with KSCN. The popularity of ammonium sulfate as a precipitant is thus supported by this observed preservation of structural integrity. KSCN, in comparison, produced partial unfolding of specific regions in HEWL due most likely to known preferential interactions between -SCN and proteins. The severity of unfolding increased with KSCN concentration such that, at 1.0 M KSCN, almost the entire beta-sheet/loop domain of HEWL was disrupted. Even so, a portion of the HEWL core encompassed by three alpha-helices remained intact, possibly facilitating precipitate dissolution.

Abstract
A novel single-chained ribosome-inactivating protein (RIP) with a molecular weight of approximately 29 000 was purified from fruiting bodies of the edible mushroom Volvariellavolvacea with a procedure involving ammonium sulfate precipitation, ion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, and gel filtration on Superdex 75. The mushroom RIP, designated volvarin, exhibited a potent inhibitory action on protein synthesis in the rabbit reticulocyte lysate system with an IC(50) value of 0.5 nM. Like most plant RIPs, volvarin acted as an N-glycosidase that depurinated rRNA from rabbit reticulocyte lysate, releasing a characteristic RNA fragment after treatment with aniline. It also exerted a deoxyribonuclease activity on supercoiled SV-40 DNA and demonstrated a strong abortifacient effect in mice.

Abstract
Two lectins isolated from the mushroom Tricholoma mongolicum stimulated the production of nitrite ions by macrophages in normal and tumor-bearing mice. Both lectins exhibited negligible mitogenic activity toward T-cells or splenocytes from normal mice in vitro when compared with Con A. Similarly, T-cells from sarcoma-bearing mice treated with the lectins did not exhibit a mitogenic response different from that of the control. However, T-cells from normal lectin-treated mice demonstrated a reduced mitogenic response when compared with the control. In mice the growth of sarcoma 180 cells in the peritoneal cavity was inhibited and the life-span was prolonged by the two lectins.

Abstract
The superoxide and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities of eight mushroom antitumor polysaccharide extracts were investigated using phenazin methosulphate-NADH-nitroblue tetrazolium system and ascorbic acid-Cu(2+)-cytochrome C system respectively. The results showed that six of eight mushroom polysaccharide extracts had superoxide and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities. The protein content of the polysaccharide extracts appeared to contribute a direct effect on free radical scavenging activity. However, none of the mushroom polysaccharide extracts had antioxidative activity as measured by detecting malondialdehyde (MDA) contents of liver microsomes.

Abstract
A lectin, which exerted a hypotensive action in rats after intravenous injection via the jugular vein, was isolated from the mycelia of the edible mushroom Tricholoma mongolicum. The lectin possessed a molecular weight of 37 K and its hypotensive activity was dose-dependent. Administration of the lectin at a dose of 10 mg/kg body weight caused a mean arterial blood pressure reduction of 95.3 +/- 7.4 mmHg. The lectin's hypotensive action was not mediated via autonomic ganglion transmission, alpha-adrenoceptors, beta-adrenoceptors, cholinergic receptors, histaminergic receptors, nor the renin-angiotensin system, but it was probably mediated through vasorelaxation via adenosine A2 receptors and/or nitric oxide production.

Abstract
1. The polysaccharide-protein complex (PSPC) isolated from the culture filtrate of Tricholoma lobayense showed antitumor activity in mice. 2. PSPC had the ability to restore the phagocytic function of peritoneal exudate cells (PEC) and T-cell mitogenic activity of tumor-bearing mice. 3. An increase in the production of reactive nitrogen intermediates and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) was determined in PEC of mice that had received PSPC. 4. The present study showed that PSPC both induced the various immune responses in vivo and exhibited cytotoxicity against tumor cell lines in the presence of PSPC at doses of 30 and 60 micrograms/ml in vitro.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the mushroom Coriolus versicolor on cells of the immune system. The cultured mycelia of the mushroom Coriolus versicolor and their culture medium were separately extracted with boiling water. The resulting polysaccharopeptide preparations were designated intramycelial (IM) and extramycelial materials (EM), and were separated by gel filtration before determining their effects on lymphocytes and macrophages in vitro and in vivo. After gel filtration on Sepharose 6B, only a single peak with a molecular weight of 13-19 KDa was obtained. Gel filtration of IM and EM on Sephadex G-50 revealed the presence of a larger peak of 28 KDa (from IM) and 15 KDa (from EM) and a smaller peak of 3.5 KDa. IM, EM and their large molecular peaks enhanced the mitogenic response of T-cells from BALB/c mice in vitro. Splenocytes from C57BL/6 mice pre-treated by force-feeding with IM and EM demonstrated an augmented mitogenic response to Con A. The macrophages of C57BL/6 mice that had been pre-treated with IM or EM showed an enhanced production of nitrite ions. The results indicate that both mouse lymphocytes and macrophages were activated by preparations of polysaccharopeptide from cultured mycelia and culture medium of C. versicolor. However, no direct cytotoxic activity against fibroblasts, hepatoma cells and choriocarcinoma cells could be demonstrated.

Abstract
Vanadate (10 microM ), a potent inhibitor of tyrosine phosphatase, added simultaneously potentiated the sodium butyrate (BuONa)-induced growth inhibition. Furthermore, at 1 mM BuONa alone, after 96 h of incubation, about 20 +/- 5% of cells exhibited the morphological characteristic of apoptosis, as established by nuclear changes (condensed and fragmented nuclei) and decrease in cell size. After treatment of cells with 1 mM BuONa in the presence of 10 microM vanadate, apoptotic cells became more abundant; 90 +/- 3% of cells presented morphological characteristics of apoptosis after 96 h of incubation. Flow cytometric measurement of DNA content demonstrated the accumulation of cells in G1 phase after 72 h of incubation with 1 mM BuONa alone. In the presence of vanadate (10 microM ), accumulation of cells in G1 phase appeared after shorter times of incubation (48 h) with BuONa. A substantial increase in the proportion of cells with degraded DNA characteristic of apoptosis was observed after 48- to 72-h incubation with BuONa in the presence of vanadate. BuONa-induced apoptosis was accompanied by the increase of tyrosine phosphorylation of cellular proteins pp37 and pp97. Our results raised the possibility that regulation of tyrosine phosphorylation of pp37 and pp97 is an important event that heralds the BuONa-induced apoptosis.

Abstract
Two antitumor polysaccharide-protein complexes, PSPC and PSK from mushrooms, were compared for their modulating effect on cytokine and cytokine receptor gene expression. RNA samples were isolated from the splenocytes and peritoneal exudate cells of the untreated or treated mice. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to analyze the cytokine gene expression. Nine out of 17 cytokine mRNAs and 5 out of 6 cytokine receptor mRNAs were detected in the splenocytes and peritoneal exudate cells from both untreated and treated mice. However, IL-4 was only detected in the splenocytes while IL-7 and IL-1R(typeI) were only detected in the peritoneal exudate cells. Among the 9 cytokine genes, the expression level of M-CSF was up-regulated in splenocytes and peritoneal exudate cells of the mice by PSPC and PSK. The expression level of TNF-alpha was only up-regulated in the peritoneal exudate cells by PSK, but not by PSPC.

Abstract
TML-1 and TML-2 were two lectins isolated from the mushroom Tricholoma mongolicum. They did not differ appreciably in their pH stability and cationic requirement for hemagglutinating activity. They both stimulated the production of nitrite ions and activated the macrophages in mice. The two lectins were able to inhibit the growth of implanted sarcoma 180 cells by 68.84% and 92.39% respectively. The growth of tumor cells in the mouse peritoneal cavity was also inhibited by the two lectins with TML-2 expressing a greater potency.

Abstract
A polysaccharide-peptide complex with immunoenhancing and antitumor activities was obtained from the mycelial culture of Tricholoma mongolicum, an edible mushroom found in Northern China. The polysaccharide-peptide complex had a molecular mass of 15.5 kDa, as estimated by gel filtration, and a carbohydrate-protein ratio of about 8:1 and was not adsorbed on DEAE-Sepharose CL-6B. It possessed the activities of activating macrophages, stimulating macrophage antigen-presenting activity, which in turn enhanced proliferation of T-cells, and inhibiting the growth of sarcoma 180 cells that had been implanted in mice.

Abstract
Wild and cultivated strains of Lentinula edodes have been collected to form a germ-plasm bank of the mushroom. In addition to the ecological, morphological, and physical properties, the strains were characterized to determine their mating types (alleles of A and B incompatibility factors), substrate degradation abilities, mycelial growth rates, and fruiting abilities. The strains were used to establish molecular genetic methods of strain authentification. The genomic fingerprinting method of arbitrarily primed polymerase chain reaction was found to be a better method than the rDNA internal transcribed spacer regions sequence comparison for L. edodes strain typing. The utilization of the characterized germ-plasm bank for the selection of desirable germ plasm for breeding and cultivation is described. The value and use of molecular markers and genetic maps is also discussed. Key words: mating types, mycelial growth rate, molecular markers.

Abstract
Two lectins, TML-1 and TML-2, were isolated from Tricholoma mongolicum by ion-exchange chromatography and gel filtration. They are dimers with molecular weight near 37000. The hemagglutinating activities of TML-1 and TML-2 are sensitive to lactose inhibition and are stable between 10 and 80 degrees C. They exhibit antiproliferative activities against mouse monocyte-macrophage PU5-1.8 cells and mouse mastocytoma P815 cells in vitro. The two lectins differ in the content of proline and tyrosine residues. Both are non-glycoproteins and have hydroxyproline residues.

Abstract
Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) allow digital circuitry to be integrated on to a single device without the long time penalty incurred with mask programmable Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). This makes FPGA technology an attractive option to engineer involved in designing digital circuitry where space is at a premium. Furthermore, the relatively low cost of FPGAs at low volume, compared to mask programmable ASICs make them an excellent prototyping option for designers who are considering low cost volume production with mask programmable ASICs. There are several different types of FPGAs available which thus creates confusion for prospective users uncertain of their relative benefits. This paper serves as an introduction to FPGA technology and the stages involved in implementing a design, via the application of an Actel FPGA to the development of an ambulatory long term electrocardiogram (ECG) based RR interval recorder.

Abstract
A polysaccharide-peptide complex (PSPC) with immunomodulatory and antitumor activities was obtained from a submerged mycelial culture of Tricholoma sp., a local edible mushroom. The polysaccharide-peptide complex exhibited a molecular weight of 17 K in gel filtration and a single band after SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. It was characterized by non-adsorption on both DEAE-Sepharose CL-6B and CM-cellulose. It could activate the macrophages, stimulate the proliferation of T-cells, and inhibit the growth of sarcoma 180 in mice. It possessed more potent immunomodulatory and antitumor activities than Coriolus versicolor polysaccharopeptide (PSP) and deserves to be studied as a potential agent for immunomodulation and cancer therapy.

Abstract
Clear cell sarcoma of the kidney (CCSK) is a highly malignant childhood tumor, distinguished from classic Wilms' tumor by its propensity to metastasize to the skeletal system. Authors described a case of CCSK from a 3-year-old boy in the right kidney, showing various histologic features, such as classic, epithelioid, trabecular, neurilemmoma-like, cystic and entrapped collecting tubular pattern. Ultrastructurally epithelial differentiation was absent. Immunohistochemically, none of the intrinsic tumor cells showed positive staining with the antibodies against the keratin, S-100 protein, carcinoembryonic antigen, vimentin, desmin and myoglobin, suggesting primitive mesenchymal cell in origin.

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of intravenous sulbactam/ampicillin followed by oral sultamicillin. Parenteral sulbactam/ampicillin was administered for 7 to 14 days to 152 in-patients with moderate to severe infections. All patients were treated with sulbactam/ampicillin, but only 140 patients received oral sultamicillin therapy. Eighty-nine men and 63 women participated in this study. Infections included intraabdominal (42 cases), respiratory tract (52 cases), skin and soft tissue (29 cases), urinary tract (16 cases), and miscellaneous infections (14 cases) that included typhoid fever, gastroenteritis, septicemia, and surgical wound infection. Six (4%) patients reported six study drug-related adverse experiences. Gastrointestinal side effects were most common and included epigastric burning and indigestion. Diarrhea was not reported and no patient discontinued drug therapy because of an adverse event. Laboratory abnormalities were infrequent and clinically insignificant. Overall, 98% of the 114 evaluable patients achieved clinical cure or improvement following treatment with sulbactam/ampicillin and sultamicillin. Cured or improved patients in each diagnostic group were 97% for intraabdominal infections, 100% for respiratory tract infections, 100% for skin and soft tissue infections, 100% for urinary tract infection, and 91% for other types of infections. Only 2 (2%) patients were judged to be treatment failures. Microbiologic efficacy, or eradication, was 86% overall, ranging from 75 to 100%. Persistence of pathogens occurred in 5%, and eradication with development of a superinfection occurred in 4%. Fifty-seven percent (30/50) of the isolates tested were resistant to ampicillin alone whereas only 21% (9/42) were resistant to sulbactam/ampicillin (p = 0.002).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
