Abstract
BACKGROUND The diagnosis and treatment of relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) are challenging owing to variations in symptoms and the absence of specific guidelines. This study aimed to investigate differences in the diagnosis and follow-up of RED-S, its consequences, and related factors among sports medicine physicians with different backgrounds in Japan and the USA and examine the differences between the two countries. METHODS An anonymous survey regarding the diagnosis and treatment processes of RED-S was distributed to sports medicine physicians via email. Respondents included 58 sports medicine physicians from the USA and 241 from Japan. RESULTS The findings showed that 77.6% of the US physicians screened athletes for RED-S, whereas 17.5% of their Japanese counterparts did so. Moreover, 98.3% and 36.7% of the US and Japanese physicians, respectively, answered that they screened athletes for eating disorders upon suspicion of low energy availability. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the number of US sports medicine physicians who screened athletes for the female athlete triad (Triad) and RED-S (odds ratio [OR] = 12.78, P<0.001) and adhered to specific criteria for athlete suspension and return-to-play (OR=33.67, P<0.01) was higher than that of their Japanese counterparts. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of RED-S-related screening and treatment differed between US and Japanese sports medicine physicians. Educating sports medicine physicians about the diagnosis and treatment of athletes with possible signs of RED-S is important in treating female athletes and further investigations are required to identify why the physicians screened/not screened the athletes.

Abstract
Hypothalamic amenorrhea leads to a hypoestrogenic state, causing decreased bone mineral density (BMD), while strong impact loading on bone has been shown to increase BMD. The purpose of this study is to compare BMD in female athletes based on menstrual status and their sports/events by impact loading characteristics. BMD at the lumbar spine was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and hormone level. The subjects were classified into four groups and BMD and hormone levels were compared among the four groups, which were divided into amenorrheic athletes (AAs) and eumenorrheic athletes (EAs). This study recruited 410 female athletes (164 in the AAs and 246 in the EAs), 55 athletes in non-impact sports, 123 in low-impact sports, 141 in multidirectional sports, and 91 in high-impact sports. In the AAs group, BMD Z-score was lowest in low-impact sports (Z-score: -1.53 [-1.76, -1.30]), and was highest in high-impact sports (Z-score: 0.02 [-0.34, 0.38]). In multidirectional and high-impact sports, BMD Z-score in the AAs group did not show results lower than the average for non-athletes. When screening female athletes for low BMD, it is important to evaluate the risk of low BMD based on the impact loading characteristics of their sports/events, in addition to the menstrual state.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To systematically review evidence on the effects of nutrition therapy in older stroke patients undergoing rehabilitation and identify its effectiveness using meta-analysis. METHODS PubMed (MEDLINE), EMBASE (via Dialog), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trial, World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform and Ichu-shi Web were searched for relevant articles. Randomized controlled trials investigating the effects of nutrition therapy compared to control interventions in older stroke patients undergoing rehabilitation were considered eligible. The primary outcome was activities of daily living (ADL), and secondary outcomes were all-cause mortality, infections, pneumonia incidence, disability level, walking ability, fall, stroke recurrence, and quality of life. The risk of bias of each trial was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration Tool, and the quality of the body of evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach. RESULTS Eight randomized controlled trials with a total of 5484 participants were included in the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis for ADL showed no significant effects (mean difference, 4.16; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.88 to 9.20; I2=53%, low-quality evidence). The meta-analyses for secondary outcomes revealed a significant effect of reduced infections (risk ratio, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.51 to 0.84; I2=0%; low-quality evidence), with no significant effects on the other outcomes. CONCLUSION Nutrition therapy had no statistically significant effect on ADL. However, it reduced the incidence of infections. More high-quality trials are warranted to clarify the effects of nutrition therapy in older stroke patients undergoing rehabilitation.

Abstract
Cartilaginous fish are the evolutionarily oldest group of animals which possess antibodies, T cell receptors and major histocompatibility complex (MHC). The immunoglobulin novel antigen receptor (IgNAR) found in cartilaginous fish is a heavy chain homodimer which lacks light chain. The presence of non-canonical cysteine molecules and lack of CDR2 region make it more significant. To synthesize active binding domains based on variable region of IgNAR (VNAR), knowledge on the constant region dynamics play a significant role. The IgNAR exhibit species variations in its primary sequence features; hence, this study was conducted to determine the IgNAR heavy chain constant domain of the brownbanded bamboo shark (Chiloscyllium punctatum). Peripheral blood leukocytes (PBL) isolated from adult bamboo sharks were used to synthesize a cDNA library. A total of four billion residues of two million sequences (average length 218.41 bp) were obtained. Assembled sequences were aligned with published cartilaginous fish IgNAR constant region sequences. Transcriptome analysis revealed two distinct types of IgNAR in the brownbanded bamboo shark. Also, constant-1 domain sequences displayed 13 unique sequences which may reflect the least number of IgNAR gene clusters. The phylogenetic analysis revealed the closest relationship with the nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum) followed by the wobbegong shark (Orectolobus maculatus) which belong to the same order Orectolobiformes. Analysis of the constant domains of the brownbanded bamboo shark IgNAR revealed an evolutionarily conserved nature and this knowledge can be used to design primers for VNAR cloning. Furthermore, knowledge on the structural features in IgNAR constant domains that increase the stability could be useful in the process of stabilizing human immunoglobulins.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Our genomewide association study documented an association between cold medicine-related Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis (CM-SJS/TEN) and Ikaros Family Zinc Finger 1 (IKZF1). Few studies examined biological and pathological functions of IKZF1 in mucosal immunity. We hypothesized that IKZF1 contributes to the mucocutaneous inflammation. METHODS Human skin and conjunctival tissues were obtained for immunohistological studies. Primary human conjunctival epithelial cells (PHCjECs) and adult human epidermal keratinocytes (HEKa) also used for gene expression analysis. We also generated K5-Ikzf1-EGFP transgenic mice (Ikzf1 Tg) by introducing the Ik1 isoform into cells expressing keratin 5, which is expressed in epithelial tissues such as the epidermis and conjunctiva, and then examined them histologically and investigated gene expression of the epidermis. Moreover, Ikzf1 Tg were induced allergic contact dermatitis. RESULTS We found that human epidermis and conjunctival epithelium expressed IKZF1, and in PHCjECs and HEKa, the expression of IKZF1 mRNA was upregulated by stimulation with polyI:C, a TLR3 ligand. In Ikzf1 Tg, we observed dermatitis and mucosal inflammation including the ocular surface. In contact dermatitis model, inflammatory infiltrates in the skin of Ikzf1 Tg were significantly increased compared with wild type. Microarray analysis showed that Lcn2, Adh7, Epgn, Ifi202b, Cdo1, Gpr37, Duoxa1, Tnfrsf4, and Enpp5 genes were significantly upregulated in the epidermis of Ikzf1 Tg compared with wild type. CONCLUSION Our findings support the hypothesis that Ikaros might participate in mucocutaneous inflammation.

Abstract
The functions of Klotho (KL) are multifaceted and include the regulation of aging and mineral metabolism. It was originally identified as the gene responsible for premature aging-like symptoms in mice and was subsequently shown to function as a coreceptor in the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) 23 signaling pathway. The discovery of KL as a partner for FGF23 led to significant advances in understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying phosphate and vitamin D metabolism, and simultaneously clarified the pathogenic roles of the FGF23 signaling pathway in human diseases. These novel insights led to the development of new strategies to combat disorders associated with the dysregulated metabolism of phosphate and vitamin D, and clinical trials on the blockade of FGF23 signaling in X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets are ongoing. Molecular and functional insights on KL and FGF23 have been discussed in this review and were extended to how dysregulation of the FGF23/KL axis causes human disorders associated with abnormal mineral metabolism.

PURPOSE To investigate the long-term results of 3% diquafosol ophthalmic solution as an alternative therapy to existing ophthalmic solutions, including topical immunosuppression, for the treatment of dry eye in patients with Sjögren's syndrome. METHODS This study involved 14 female dry-eye patients (mean age: 62.4 years) with Sjögren's syndrome who insufficiently responded to their current therapy. In all patients, 3% diquafosol ophthalmic solution was administered six times daily for 12 months in substitution for artificial tears and sodium hyaluronate ophthalmic solution. Their use of corticosteroid eye drops remained unchanged from that prior to the treatment with diquafosol sodium. The subjective symptoms assessed, and ocular signs including tear meniscus radius and the tear film breakup time, and ocular-surface epithelial damage score were examined at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, and 12 months after initiating treatment. RESULTS Among the subjective symptoms, significant improvement was obtained in dryness at 2 months post treatment, in eye fatigue at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 12 months post treatment, and in pain at 1, 2, 6, and 12 months post treatment. Difficulty in opening the eye, foreign body sensation, and redness were also significantly ameliorated at various time-points. The tear meniscus radius and the tear film breakup time were significantly improved throughout the observation period, and the corneal epithelial staining scores were significantly decreased at 3 months post treatment. CONCLUSIONS In dry-eye patients with Sjögren's syndrome, treatment with 3% diquafosol ophthalmic solution improved both symptoms and signs, and that effectiveness was maintained for 12 months.

Abstract
A total of 74 phenotypically identified presumptive motile Aeromonas isolates recovered from septicaemic freshwater ornamental fish in Sri Lanka were genetically characterized by sequencing of rpoD and gyrB genes. rpoD/gyrB phylogeny confirmed only 53 isolates as Aeromonas, among which A. veronii was the predominant species (79.2%), followed by A. hydrophila (7.5%), A. caviae (5.7%), A. jandaei (1.9%), A. dhakensis (3.8%) and A. entero pelogenes (1.9%). The aeromonads confirmed by sequencing were further subjected to 16S rDNA PCR-RFLP which substantiated sequencing results for 83% of isolates. Fingerprinting of A. enteropelogenes (n = 42) using ERIC-PCR revealed no dominant clones, and the majority were genetically distinct. All isolates were screened by PCR for 7 virulence determinant genes (aer, act, ast, alt, fla, ser, exu) and 2 integrase encoding genes (intI1, intI2). Each isolate contained ≥3 of the virulence genes tested for, with a heterogeneous distribution. Of the isolates, 77% harboured the intI1 gene, while none had intI2. In vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing showed highest resistances towards tetracycline (58.5%) and erythromycin (54.7%). Our results indicate the diverse range of aeromonads that could potentially be associated with motile aeromonad septicaemia in ornamental fish. This is the first isolation of A. dhakensis from a septicaemic ornamental fish since its original description from the same host.

Abstract
Porcine dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP) is the most abundant non-collagenous protein in dentin. It is processed by proteases into 3 independent proteins: dentin sialoprotein (DSP), dentin glycoprotein (DGP), and dentin phosphoprotein (DPP). We fractionated DPP and DSP along with TGF-β activity by ion exchange (IE) chromatography from developing pig molars and measured their alkaline phosphatase (ALP)-stimulating activity in human periodontal (HPDL) cells with or without TGF-β receptor inhibitor. We then purified TGF-β-unbound or -bound DPP and DSP by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) using the ALP-HPDL system. The TGF-β isoform bound to DPP and DSP was identified as being TGF-β1 by both ELISA and LC-MS/MS analysis. We incubated carrier-free human recombinant TGF-β1 (CF-hTGF-β1) with TGF-β-unbound DPP or DSP and characterized the binding on IE-HPLC using the ALP-HPDL system. When only CF-hTGF-β1 was incubated, approximately 3.6% of the ALP-stimulating activity remained. DPP and DSP rescued the loss of TGF-β1 activity. Approximately 19% and 10% of the ALP stimulating activities were retained by the binding of TGF-β to DPP and DSP, respectively. The type I collagen infrequently bound to CF-hTGF-β1. We conclude that both DPP and DSP help retain TGF-β1 activity in porcine dentin.

Abstract
It is known that the wing scales of the emerald-patched cattleheart butterfly, Parides sesostris, contain gyroid-type photonic crystals, which produce a green structural colour. However, the photonic crystal is not a single crystal that spreads over the entire scale, but it is separated into many small domains with different crystal orientations. As a photonic crystal generally has band gaps at different frequencies depending on the direction of light propagation, it seems mysterious that the scale is observed to be uniformly green under an optical microscope despite the multi-domain structure. In this study, we have carefully investigated the structure of the wing scale and discovered that the crystal orientations of different domains are not perfectly random, but there is a preferred crystal orientation that is aligned along the surface normal of the scale. This finding suggests that there is an additional factor during the developmental process of the microstructure that regulates the crystal orientation.

Abstract
We investigated the structural color of the green wing of the lycaenid butterfly Chrysozephyrus brillantinus. Electron microscopy revealed that the bottom plate of the cover scale on the wing consists of an alternating air-cuticle multilayer structure. However, the thicknesses of the layers were not constant but greatly differed depending on the layer, unlike the periodic multilayer designs often adopted for artificial laser-reflecting mirrors. The agreement between the experimentally determined and theoretically calculated reflectance spectra led us to conclude that the multilayer interference in the aperiodic system is the primary origin of the structural color. We analyzed optical interference in this aperiodic system using a simple analytical model and found that two spectral peaks arise from constructive interference among different parts of the multilayer structure. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the aperiodic system over a periodic one.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS It is often difficult to differentiate between allergic and irritant patch test reactions by visual inspection. The purpose of this study was to test an image analysis-based method that differentiates between the two reactions by quantifying the degree of erythema at the patch test site. METHODS A total of 172 Japanese patients were patch-tested with sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and nickel sulfate, followed by digital photography and visual evaluation of the patch test areas by dermatologists at 48 and 72 h. The digital images were converted to erythema index (EI) images by image processing, and changes in ΔEI (the difference in the EI between the patch test site and the adjacent normal skin) values were analyzed. RESULTS The ΔEI was significantly increased at 72 h relative to that at 48 h for positive nickel sulfate reactions (P < 0.0001), while no significant difference in the ΔEI was found for SLS reactions. CONCLUSION Using image analysis, allergic patch test reactions may be distinguished from irritant reactions by evaluating the change in the degree of erythema at 48 and 72 h.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A turn-over septal flap has been reported as a spacer for levator lengthening in a single case report. This study reports the preliminary outcomes of this technique in a series of patients with upper-lid retraction (ULR) associated with thyroid eye disease (TED) causing symptomatic exposure keratopathy (EK). METHODS Retrospective, multicenter study of 12 eyelids of 10 patients with TED undergoing a transcutaneous levator-lengthening technique using the reflected orbital septum (OS) as a spacer. Change in palpebral aperture (PA) and contour, position of the skin crease (SC), symptoms of EK, and complications were recorded. RESULTS The average age was 47.5 years. Two patients were excluded, as their septa were found to be very thin at surgery. At an average of 13 months postoperatively, the PA was reduced by 2.5 mm on average (P<0.001) and was within 1 mm of the contralateral eyelid in 11 cases (92%); the position of the SC was within 1 mm of the desired position in all cases. EK resolved in all cases. Complications included one case of overcorrection and one case of recurrent lateral flare. CONCLUSIONS The turn-over orbital septal flap technique may be a viable option as an autogenous spacer for the treatment of ULR in TED. This technique may be possible in cases where the OS has been opened by previous surgery but may not be feasible in patients in whom the septum is very thin.

Abstract
The full-length of insulin-like growth factor (IGF) complementary (c)DNAs encoded by igf-I and igf-II from torafugu pufferfish Takifugu rubripes were cloned in the present study. The deduced amino acid sequences of the two genes showed c. 80% identity each with those of Igf-I and Igf-II from other teleosts, respectively. Two growth hormone (GH) receptors, ghr1 and ghr2, were also cloned in silico using the T. rubripes Fugu genome database. The transcripts of T. rubripes igf-I were detected in slow muscle, heart, skin, gill, liver and intestine but not in fast muscle, spleen and testis of adult fish, whereas those of igf-II were found in all tissues examined. Subsequently, the accumulated messenger (m)RNA levels of igf-I and igf-II were investigated in an F(2) population derived from a male of an apparent fast-growing T. rubripes strain and a wild female T. rubripes together with those of other growth-related genes encoding Gh, Ghr1 and Ghr2, and with those of prolactin (Prl) and leptin (Lep) previously reported. The accumulated mRNA levels of igf-I, gh and ghr1 were significantly correlated to growth rate at larval stages in the population, but not for those of igf-II, prl, ghr2 and lep. Although it is unclear whether or not this phenotype is directly related to the heredity of the fast-growing strain, the findings suggest that the expression of igf-I, gh and ghr1 is involved in the regulation of growth rate at larval stages in T. rubripes.

Abstract
AbstractThe results of ceramics sintering experiments using high-power millimeter-wave radiation are reported. Sintering of silicon nitride with 5%Al2O3 and 5%Y2O3 was performed in a multi-mode applicator using a 10-kW 28-GHz gyrotron in CW operation. It was found that the silicon nitride samples sintered with 28 GHz radiation at 1650'C for 30 min reached to as high as theoretical density (TD), while the conventionally sintered samples at 1700°C for 60 min resulted in the density as low as 90% TD. Focusing experiments of millimeter-wave radiation from the high-power pulsed 60-GHz gyrotron have been performed using a quasi-optical antenna system (two-dimensional ellipso-parabolic focusing antenna system) to demonstrate the feasibility of the power density of as high as 100 kW/cm2. Typical heating characteristics using the focused beam were made clear for this system. It was found that the densification of yttria-stabilized zirconia (ZrO2-8mol%Y2O3) samples to as high as 97% TD was obtained from the sintering with focused 60 GHz beam in pulse operation with a 10-ms pulse duration at a 0.5Hz repetition. The densification temperature for the zirconia could be lowered by 200°C than that expected conventionally.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The recent availability of genetic analyses has demonstrated the shortcomings of the current phenotypic method of corneal dystrophy classification. Abnormalities in different genes can cause a single phenotype, whereas different defects in a single gene can cause different phenotypes. Some disorders termed corneal dystrophies do not appear to have a genetic basis. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to develop a new classification system for corneal dystrophies, integrating up-to-date information on phenotypic description, pathologic examination, and genetic analysis. METHODS The International Committee for Classification of Corneal Dystrophies (IC3D) was created to devise a current and accurate nomenclature. RESULTS This anatomic classification continues to organize dystrophies according to the level chiefly affected. Each dystrophy has a template summarizing genetic, clinical, and pathologic information. A category number from 1 through 4 is assigned, reflecting the level of evidence supporting the existence of a given dystrophy. The most defined dystrophies belong to category 1 (a well-defined corneal dystrophy in which a gene has been mapped and identified and specific mutations are known) and the least defined belong to category 4 (a suspected dystrophy where the clinical and genetic evidence is not yet convincing). The nomenclature may be updated over time as new information regarding the dystrophies becomes available. CONCLUSIONS The IC3D Classification of Corneal Dystrophies is a new classification system that incorporates many aspects of the traditional definitions of corneal dystrophies with new genetic, clinical, and pathologic information. Standardized templates provide key information that includes a level of evidence for there being a corneal dystrophy. The system is user-friendly and upgradeable and can be retrieved on the website www.corneasociety.org/ic3d .

Abstract
The structural colour of the neon tetra is distinguishable from those of, e.g., butterfly wings and bird feathers, because it can change in response to the light intensity of the surrounding environment. This fact clearly indicates the variability of the colour-producing microstructures. It has been known that an iridophore of the neon tetra contains a few stacks of periodically arranged light-reflecting platelets, which can cause multilayer optical interference phenomena. As a mechanism of the colour variability, the Venetian blind model has been proposed, in which the light-reflecting platelets are assumed to be tilted during colour change, resulting in a variation in the spacing between the platelets. In order to quantitatively evaluate the validity of this model, we have performed a detailed optical study of a single stack of platelets inside an iridophore. In particular, we have prepared a new optical system that can simultaneously measure both the spectrum and direction of the reflected light, which are expected to be closely related to each other in the Venetian blind model. The experimental results and detailed analysis are found to quantitatively verify the model.

Abstract
After a series of experiments on photoperiodicity and light intensity under daylight supplied by an ordinary fluorescent lamp in cultivations using a flask and a roux bottle, it was found that irradiation at 27.2 W/m(2) for the whole period was effective for anthocyanin production by a suspended culture of Perilla frutescens (shiso). A high amount of anthocyanin pigments, 3.0 g/L, was obtained in a bubble column bioreactor after 10 days of cultivation at an aeration rate of 0.1 vvm with light irradiation at 27.2 W/m(2), while 2 g/L was obtained at 13.6 W/m(2) and very little at 54.4 W/m(2). A high amount of anthocyanin pigments, 2.9 g/L, was also produced using an aerated and agitated bioreactor at an agitation speed of 130 rpm, an aeration rate of 0.1 vvm and light irradiation intensity of 27.2 W/m(2). The amount of anthocyanin produced was more than twice that without light irradiation, Keeping the other cultivation conditions the same. The results obtained also showed that the amount of anthocyanin pigment accumulated in a shake flask could be rather well reproduced in bioreactors for both aerated culture, and aerated and agitated culture, by improving the conditions of light irradiation, which conspicuously affects metabolite formation.

Abstract
Comprehensive in silico studies, based on the total fugu genome database, which was the first to appear in fish, revealed that torafugu Takifugu rubripes contains 20 sarcomeric myosin heavy chain (MYH) genes (MYH genes) (Ikeda et al., 2007). The present study was undertaken to identify MYH genes that would be expressed in adult muscles. In total, seven MYH genes were found by screening cDNA clone libraries constructed from fast, slow and cardiac muscles. Three MYH genes, fast-type MYH(M86-1), slow-type MYH(M8248) and slow/cardiac-type MYH(M880), were cloned exclusively from fast, slow and cardiac muscles, respectively. Northern blot hybridization substantiated their specific expression, with the exception of MYH(M880). In contrast, transcripts of fast-type MYH(M2528-1) and MYH(M1034) were found in both fast and slow muscles as revealed by cDNA clone library and northern blot techniques. This result was supported by in situ hybridization analysis using specific RNA probes, where transcripts of fast-type MYH(M2528-1) were expressed in fast fibres with small diameters as well as in fibres of superficial slow muscle with large diameters adjacent to fast muscle. Transcripts of fast-type MYH(M86-1) were expressed in all fast fibres with different diameters, whereas transcripts of slow-type MYH(M8248) were restricted to fibres with small diameters located in a superficial part of slow muscle. Interestingly, histochemical analyses showed that fast fibres with small diameters and slow fibres with large diameters both contained acid-stable myofibrillar ATPase, suggesting that these fibres have similar functions, possibly in the generation of muscle fibres irrespective of their fibre types.

Abstract
Due to various technological and medical demands, several methods for controlling the dynamical behavior of coupled oscillators have been developed. In the present study, we develop a method to control the individual phase relationship between coupled oscillators, in which multilinear feedback is used to modify the interaction between the oscillators. By carrying out a simulation, we show that the phase relationship can be well controlled by using the proposed method and the control is particularly robust when the target coupling function is selected properly.

Abstract
A density oscillator is a well-known system, which exhibits relaxation oscillation. It alternately exhibits up and down flows through a pipe that connects two containers filled with fluids that have different densities. Although the up-flow, down-flow, and flow-reversal processes have been studied separately, the entire oscillatory dynamics has not been modeled quantitatively. In this study, we derive a model of a density oscillator by considering all the above mentioned processes. The model thus obtained describes the oscillatory behavior in a unified manner, and its viscosity and pipe-length dependence is well described. Moreover, for the demonstration of this model, we have extended it to describe the dynamical behaviors observed in coupled density oscillators. Thus, this model provides a general expression for density oscillators.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Scant consideration has been given to the variation in structure of the human amniotic membrane (AM) at source or to the significance such differences might have on its clinical transparency. Therefore, we applied our experience of quantifying corneal transparency to AM. METHODS Following elective caesarean, AM from areas of the fetal sac distal and proximal (ie, adjacent) to the placenta was compared with freeze-dried AM. The transmission of light through the AM samples was quantified spectrophotometrically; also, tissue thickness was measured by light microscopy and refractive index by refractometry. RESULTS Freeze-dried and freeze-thawed AM samples distal and proximal to the placenta differed significantly in thickness, percentage transmission of visible light and refractive index. The thinnest tissue (freeze-dried AM) had the highest transmission spectra. The thickest tissue (freeze-thawed AM proximal to the placenta) had the highest refractive index. Using the direct summation of fields method to predict transparency from an equivalent thickness of corneal tissue, AM was found to be up to 85% as transparent as human cornea. CONCLUSION When preparing AM for ocular surface reconstruction within the visual field, consideration should be given to its original location from within the fetal sac and its method of preservation, as either can influence corneal transparency.

Abstract
This paper reports the case of a 76-year-old man in whom atrial flutter with varying atrioventricular block and intermittent right bundle-branch block was found. This is the first report on tachycardia-dependent right bundle-branch block associated with supernormal conduction in a case of atrial flutter. When an impulse is conducted to the ventricles beyond 0.72 s after a QRS complex of right bundle-branch block configuration, the impulse falls after the abnormally long effective refractor period of the right bundle branch and passes through the right bundle branch. When the conducted impulse occurs within 0.72 s after a QRS complex of right bundle-branch block configuration, the impulse usually falls in the refractory period and is blocked in the right bundle branch; however, only when the impulse occurs 0.48 or 0.49 s after that does it fall in the supernormal period and passes through the right bundle branch. The findings in the present report strengthen our previous suggestion that the presence of supernormal conduction plays an important role in the initiation of reentrant ventricular tachycardia.

Abstract
Methods to control the dynamics of coupled oscillators have been developed owing to various medical and technological demands. In this study, we develop a method to control coupled oscillators in which the coupling function expressed in a phase model is regulated by the multilinear feedback. The present method has wide applicability because we do not need to measure an individual output from each oscillator, but only measure the sum of the outputs from all the oscillators. Moreover, it allows us to easily control the coupling function up to higher harmonics. The validity of the present method is confirmed through a simulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are acute severe blistering diseases of the skin and also two of the most devastating ocular surface diseases leading to corneal damage and loss of vision. The extreme rarity of cutaneous and ocular surface reactions to drug therapies led us to suspect individual susceptibility. SJS/TEN patients in the acute stage were reported to manifest increased serum levels of Fas Ligand (FasL). Thus, we performed SNP association analysis of the FasL gene. METHODS In 76 Japanese SJS/TEN patients with ocular surface complications and 160 Japanese healthy controls, we examined four SNPs of FasL reported in the Japanese Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (JSNP) database by sequencing. RESULTS The SNP rs.3830150 A/G showed a significant strong inverse association with SJS/TEN. Analysis of the genotype pattern of SNPs rs.3830150 and rs.2639614 (rs.3830150 A/A-rs.2639614 G/G) also manifested a strong inverse association with SJS/TEN. CONCLUSION FasL gene polymorphisms might be associated with SJS/TEN.
