Abstract
Pesticides effectively reduce the population of various pests that harm crops and increase productivity, but leave residues that adversely affect health and the environment. Here, a simultaneous multicomponent analysis method based on ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF-MS) pretreated by the QuEChERS method was developed to control the maximum residual levels. Among the 140 pesticides with high frequency of detection in agricultural products in Gyeongnam region in Korea for 5 years, 12 pesticides with high detection frequency in sweet pepper were selected. The analytical method is validated, linearities are r2 > 0.999, limit of detection (LOD) ranges from 1.4 to 3.2 µg/kg, and limit of quantification (LOQ) ranges from 4.1 to 9.7 µg/kg, and the recovery rate was 81.7-99.7%. In addition, it was confirmed that a meaningful value of these parameters can be achieved by determining the measurement uncertainty. The results proved that parameters such as recovery rate and relative standard deviation of the analysis method were within international standards. Using the developed method, better and safer sweet peppers will be provided to consumers, and effective pesticide residue management will be possible by expanding to other agricultural products.

Abstract
A method was developed for the rapid and quantitative analysis of 30 veterinary drugs belonging to 17 classes (amphenicols (1), anthelmintics (1), cephalosporins (4), coccidiostats (1), lincosamides (1), macrolide (1), nitroimidazole (1), penicillins (3), phenylhydrazines (1), polypeptides (1), pyrethrins (1), quinolones (5), sulfonamides (3), tetracycline (3), neuroleptic agents (1), triazene trypanocidal agents (1), other. (1)) in feeds. The proposed method with a modified Quick Polar Pesticides (QuPPe) sample preparation was validated for the determination of 30 veterinary drugs in feed samples by liquid chromatography triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). The sample was extracted with methanol containing 1% acetic acid and purified by dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) with C18. Good linearity (r2 ≥ 0.98) was observed, and the LOQ values ranged from 10 to 200 µg/kg. Average recoveries ranged from 70.8 to 118.4%, and the relative standard deviation was ≤ 18.7%. This validated method was used in the determination of 30 veterinary drugs in 142 feed samples obtained from South Korea. The results show that lincomycin was present in only one of the tested feed samples, although it was detected at a value lower than the LOQ. In conclusion, this multi-residue method can be used for screening through the detection and quantitation of residual multiclass veterinary drugs in feed samples.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are toxic substances naturally produced by various fungi, and these compounds not only inflict economic damage, but also pose risks to human and animal health. The goal of the present study was to optimize the QuEChERS-based extraction and liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) method for the analysis of 11 mycotoxins, such as aflatoxins (AFs), ochratoxin A (OTA), fumonisins (FBs), T-2 toxin, HT-2 toxin, zearalenone (ZEN), and deoxynivalenol (DON), commonly found in feed. The QuEChERS method, characterized by being “quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe”, has become one of the most common extractions and clean-up procedures for mycotoxin analyses in food. Therefore, in this experiment, an optimal method for the analysis of 11 mycotoxins in feed was established by modifying the general QuEChERS method. In this process, it was confirmed that even if feed samples of different weights were extracted, the quantitative value of mycotoxins in the feed was not affected. To reduce matrix effects, 13C-labeled compounds and deuterium were used as internal standards. This optimized method was then applied in the determination of 11 mycotoxins in 736 feed ingredients and compound feeds obtained from South Korea. The results showed that the occurrence rates of FBs, ZEN, and DON were 59.4%, 38.0%, and 32.1%, respectively, and OTA, AFs, and T-2 toxin and HT-2 toxin were found in fewer than 1% of the 736 feeds. The mean concentration ranges of FBs, ZEN, and DON were 757–2387, 44–4552, and 248–9680 μg/kg, respectively. Among the samples in which DON and ZEN were detected, 10 and 12 samples exceeded the management recommendation standards presented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA). However, when the detected concentrations of DON and ZEN were compared with guideline levels in foreign countries, such as the US, Japan, China, and the EU, the number of positive samples changed. In addition, the co-occurrence of mycotoxins in the feed was analyzed, and the results showed that 43.8% of the samples were contaminated with two or three mycotoxins, among which the co-occurrence rate of FBs, ZEN, and DON was the highest. In conclusion, these results suggest the need for stricter management standards for FBs, DON, and ZEN in South Korea, and emphasize the importance of the continuous monitoring of feeds.

Abstract
The environment has been continuously exposed to heavy metals by various routes, from both natural and artificial sources. In particular, heavy metals in water can affect aquatic organisms adversely, even at very low concentrations, and can lead to the disturbance of the ecosystem balance and biodiversity. Ecological risk assessments are conducted to protect the environment from such situations, primarily by deriving the predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) from the species sensitivity distribution (SSD). This study developed the SSDs based on the species living in Korean freshwater for four heavy metals including cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn). The species compositions of the SSDs were examined, and three types of PNECs were derived by applying different assessment factors (AF). In addition, the occurrence and concentrations of heavy metals in Korean rivers were investigated, and the ecological risk assessment was carried out to compare the SSDs with the environmental concentrations. The SSDs were developed using a sufficient number of species, but the missing data of plants and insects provided an incomplete species composition. The results show that Cd and Pb in the environmental concentrations of rivers would not cause any risk to aquatic organisms from the derived PNEC. However, some organisms might be adversely affected by the concentrations of Zn, and a small amount of risk was expected under the conservative PNEC. The distribution of Cu in the rivers was not considered to be safe for aquatic organisms because the average environmental concentrations potentially affected the proportion of the SSD, and the environmental concentrations exceeded the PNECs. The concentrations of Cu and Zn in industrial waters indicated a considerable risk to aquatic organisms, and the probability of exceeding the PNECs appeared to be quite high. Therefore, this study indicates that additional actions and parallel field studies are required based on the risk posed to aquatic organisms by Cu and Zn in four Korean rivers.

Abstract
Emerging evidence indicates that leptin may be a potential new target in chronic heart failure (CHF) treatment. We hypothesized that hyperleptinemia may correlate with abnormal expression of SERCA2a, PLB (phospholamban), and the endothelin (ET) pathway in CHF. An activated ET pathway is involved in CHF that is suppressed by CPU86017 (p-chlorobenzyltetrahydroberberine chloride), a complex class III antiarrhythmic agent with an antioxidant effect. Thus, relief of CHF may be mediated by a reversal of abnormalities of the leptin system, the ET-reactive oxygen species (ROS) pathway, SERCA2a, and PLB by CPU86017. CHF was produced by coronary artery ligation for 6 weeks in rats. The rats were divided into 3 groups: sham, CHF untreated, and CHF+CPU86017 (4 mg/kg per day, s.c.). Hemodynamic changes, cardiac morphology, serum biochemistry, messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) and protein expression of the leptin pathway, ET pathway, and redox were measured. In CHF rats, hemodynamic abnormalities, cardiac remodeling, and histological changes with features of cardiac failure were associated with hyperlipidemia accompanied by oxidative stress and upregulated OB-Rb, ECE, pp-ET-1, ET(A)R, and ET(B)R mRNA expression in the myocardium. Protein expression of leptin and ET(A)R in the myocardium was markedly increased in CHF rats. An activated leptin pathway was associated with downregulation of SERCA2a and upregulation of PLB in mRNA and protein expression in CHF. CPU86017 downregulated the leptin system and reversed the above changes in the myocardium. An activated leptin pathway correlates with abnormal expression of SERCA2a and PLB and an activated ET-ROS system in the affected myocardium. The multi-ion-channel-blocking and antioxidative effects of CPU86017 downregulate the leptin pathway and ET system, resulting in reversal of the abnormalities of expression of SERCA2a and PLB and cardiac performance in CHF.
