Abstract
Daytime HONO photolysis is an important source of atmospheric hydroxyl radicals (OH). Knowledge of HONO formation chemistry under typical haze conditions, however, is still limited. In the Multiphase chemistry experiment in Fogs and Aerosols in the North China Plain in 2018, we investigated the wintertime HONO formation and its atmospheric implications at a rural site Gucheng. Three different episodes based on atmospheric aerosol loading levels were classified: clean periods (CPs), moderately polluted periods (MPPs) and severely polluted periods (SPPs). Correlation analysis revealed that HONO formation via heterogeneous conversion of NO2 was more efficient on aerosol surfaces than on ground, highlighting the important role of aerosols in promoting HONO formation. Daytime HONO budget analysis indicated a large missing source (with an average production rate of 0.66 ± 0.26, 0.97 ± 0.47 and 1.45 ± 0.55 ppbV/hr for CPs, MPPs and SPPs, respectively), which strongly correlated with photo-enhanced reactions (NO2 heterogeneous reaction and particulate nitrate photolysis). Average OH formation derived from HONO photolysis reached up to (0.92 ± 0.71), (1.75 ± 1.26) and (1.82 ± 1.47) ppbV/hr in CPs, MPPs and SPPs respectively, much higher than that from O3 photolysis (i.e., (0.004 ± 0.004), (0.006 ± 0.007) and (0.0035 ± 0.0034) ppbV/hr). Such high OH production rates could markedly regulate the atmospheric oxidation capacity and hence promote the formation of secondary aerosols and pollutants.

Abstract
Accurate determination of acidity (pH) and ion activities in aqueous droplets is a major experimental and theoretical challenge for understanding and simulating atmospheric multiphase chemistry. Here, we develop a ratiometric Raman spectroscopy method to measure the equilibrium concentration of sulfate (SO42-) and bisulfate (HSO4-) in single microdroplets levitated by aerosol optical tweezers. This approach enables determination of ion activities and pH in aqueous sodium bisulfate droplets under highly supersaturated conditions. The experimental results were compared against aerosol thermodynamic model calculations in terms of simulating aerosol ion concentrations, ion activity coefficients, and pH. We found that the Extended Aerosol Inorganics Model (E-AIM) can well reproduce the experimental results. The alternative model ISORROPIA, however, exhibits substantial deviations in SO42- and HSO4- concentrations and up to a full unit of aerosol pH under acidic conditions, mainly due to discrepancies in simulating ion activity coefficients of SO42--HSO4- equilibrium. Globally, this may cause an average deviation of ISORROPIA from E-AIM by 25 and 65% in predicting SO42- and HSO4- concentrations, respectively. Our results show that it is important to determine aerosol pH and ion activities in the investigation of sulfate formation and related aqueous phase chemistry.

Abstract
Nitrous acid (HONO) is an important component of the global nitrogen cycle and can regulate the atmospheric oxidative capacity. Soil is an important source of HONO. [HONO]*, the equilibrium gas-phase concentration over the aqueous solution of nitrous acid in the soil, has been suggested as a key parameter for quantifying soil fluxes of HONO. However, [HONO]* has not yet been well-validated and quantified. Here, we present a method to retrieve [HONO]* by conducting controlled dynamic chamber experiments with soil samples applied with different HONO concentrations at the chamber inlet. We show a bi-directional soil-atmosphere exchange of HONO and confirm the existence of [HONO]* over soil: when [HONO]* is higher than the atmospheric HONO concentration, HONO will be released from soil; otherwise, HONO will be deposited. We demonstrate that [HONO]* is a soil characteristic, which is independent of HONO concentrations in the chamber but varies with different soil water contents. We illustrate the robustness of using [HONO]* for quantifying soil fluxes of HONO, whereas the laboratory-determined chamber HONO fluxes can largely deviate from those in the real world for the same soil sample. This work advances the understanding of the soil-atmosphere exchange of HONO and the evaluation of its impact on the atmospheric oxidizing capacity.

Abstract
Aqueous extracts of biogenic secondary organic aerosols (BSOAs) have been found to exhibit fluorescence that may interfere with the laser/light-induced fluorescence (LIF) detection of primary biological aerosol particles (PBAPs). In this study, we quantified the interference of BSOAs to PBAPs by directly measuring airborne BSOA particles, rather than aqueous extracts. BSOAs were generated by the reaction of d-limonene (LIM) or α-pinene (PIN) and ozone (O3) with or without ammonia in a chamber under controlled conditions. With an excitation wavelength of 355 nm, BSOAs exhibited peak emissions at 464-475 nm, while fungal spores exhibited peak emissions at 460-483 nm; the fluorescence intensity of BSOAs with diameters of 0.7 μm was in the same order of magnitude as that of fungal spores with diameters of 3 μm. The number fraction of 0.7 μm BSOAs that exhibited fluorescence above the threshold was in the range of 1.9-15.9%, depending on the species of precursors, relative humidity (RH), and ammonia. Similarly, the number fraction of 3 μm fungal spores that exhibited fluorescence above the threshold was 4.9-36.2%, depending on the species of fungal spores. Normalized fluorescence by particle volumes suggests that BSOAs exhibited fluorescence in the same order of magnitude as pollen and 10-100 times higher than that of fungal spores. A comparison with ambient particles suggests that BSOAs caused significant interference to ambient fine particles (15 of 16 ambient fine particle measurements likely detected BSOAs) and the interference was smaller for ambient coarse particles (4 of 16 ambient coarse particle measurements likely detected BSOAs) when using LIF instruments.

Abstract
Fine-particle pollution associated with winter haze threatens the health of more than 400 million people in the North China Plain. The Multiphase chemistry experiment in Fogs and Aerosols in the North China Plain (McFAN) investigated the physicochemical mechanisms leading to haze formation with a focus on the contributions of multiphase processes in aerosols and fogs. We integrated observations on multiple platforms with regional and box model simulations to identify and characterize the key oxidation processes producing sulfate, nitrate and secondary organic aerosols. An outdoor twin-chamber system was deployed to conduct kinetic experiments under real atmospheric conditions in comparison to literature kinetic data from laboratory studies. The experiments were spanning multiple years since 2017 and an intensive field campaign was performed in the winter of 2018. The location of the site minimizes fast transition between clean and polluted air masses, and regimes representative for the North China Plain were observed at the measurement location in Gucheng near Beijing. The consecutive multi-year experiments document recent trends of PM2.5 pollution and corresponding changes of aerosol physical and chemical properties, enabling in-depth investigations of established and newly proposed chemical mechanisms of haze formation. This study is mainly focusing on the data obtained from the winter campaign 2018. To investigate multiphase chemistry, the results are presented and discussed by means of three characteristic cases: low humidity, high humidity and fog. We find a strong relative humidity dependence of aerosol chemical compositions, suggesting an important role of multiphase chemistry. Compared with the low humidity period, both PM1 and PM2.5 show higher mass fraction of secondary inorganic aerosols (SIA, mainly as nitrate, sulfate and ammonium) and secondary organic aerosols (SOA) during high humidity and fog episodes. The changes in aerosol composition further influence aerosol physical properties, e.g., with higher aerosol hygroscopicity parameter κ and single scattering albedo SSA under high humidity and fog cases. The campaign-averaged aerosol pH is 5.1 ± 0.9, of which the variation is mainly driven by the aerosol water content (AWC) concentrations. Overall, the McFAN experiment provides new evidence of the key role of multiphase reactions in regulating aerosol chemical composition and physical properties in polluted regions.

Abstract
Characteristic particle size, fluorescence intensity, and fluorescence spectra are important features to detect and categorize bioaerosols. A prototype size-resolved single-particle fluorescence spectrometer (S2FS) was developed to simultaneously measure aerodynamic diameters and fluorescence spectra. Emission spectra are dispersed in 512 channels from 370 to 610 nm, where a major portion of biological fluorescence emission occurs. The S2FS consists of an aerodynamic particle sizer and a fluorescence spectrometer with a 355 nm laser excitation source and an intensified charge-coupled device as the detector. Highly fluorescent particles, such as Ambrosia artemisiifolia pollen and Olea europaea pollen, can be distinguished by the S2FS on a single-particle level. For weakly fluorescent particles, fluorescence spectra can only be obtained by averaging multiple particles (between 100 and 3000) of the same kind. Preliminary ambient measurements in Mainz (Germany, central Europe) show that an emission peak at ∼440 nm was frequently observed for fluorescent fine particles (0.5-1 μm). Fluorescent fine particles accounted for 2.8% on average based on the number fraction in the fine mode. Fluorescent coarse particles (>1 μm) accounted for 8.9% on average based on the number fraction, with strongest occurrence observed during a thunderstorm and in the morning.

Abstract
Research studies aimed at advancing cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment depend on a number of key resources, including a ready supply of high-quality annotated biospecimens from diverse ethnic populations that can be used to test new drugs, assess the validity of prognostic biomarkers, and develop tailor-made therapies. In November 2011, KHCCBIO was established at the King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC) with the support of Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) funding from the European Union (khccbio.khcc.jo). KHCCBIO was developed for the purpose of achieving an ISO accredited cancer biobank through the collection, processing, and preservation of high-quality, clinically annotated biospecimens from consenting cancer patients, making it the first cancer biobank of its kind in Jordan. The establishment of a state-of-the-art, standardized biospecimen repository of matched normal and lung tumor tissue, in addition to blood components such as serum, plasma, and white blood cells, was achieved through the support and experience of its European partners, Trinity College Dublin, Biostór Ireland, and accelopment AG. To date, KHCCBIO along with its partners, have worked closely in establishing an ISO Quality Management System (QMS) under which the biobank will operate. A Quality Policy Manual, Validation, and Training plan have been developed in addition to the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for consenting policies on ethical issues, data privacy, confidentiality, and biobanking bylaws. SOPs have also been drafted according to best international practices and implemented for the donation, procurement, processing, testing, preservation, storage, and distribution of tissues and blood samples from lung cancer patients, which will form the basis for the procurement of other cancer types. KHCCBIO will be the first ISO accredited cancer biobank from a diverse ethnic Middle Eastern and North African population. It will provide a unique and valuable resource of high-quality human biospecimens and anonymized clinicopathological data to the cancer research communities world-wide.

Abstract
We report on the pre- and postnatal cytogenetic, molecular genetic and clinical findings in monochorionic-diamniotic twins discordant for trisomy 18. Structural anomalies were identified in one of the twins on prenatal ultrasound examination at 20 weeks' gestation and sampling of amniotic fluid from both sacs was performed for karyotyping. This revealed trisomy 18 in the twin with abnormalities and a normal karyotype in the other twin. Elective Cesarean section was performed at 31 + 5 weeks and the aneuploid twin died shortly after delivery. The surviving twin showed low-grade mosaicism for trisomy 18 on postnatal analysis but has shown normal development. For prenatal diagnosis in monochorionic-diamniotic twin pregnancy the sampling of both amniotic sacs is recommended, especially if one twin has structural anomalies on ultrasound scan.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE About 3-4% of all pregnant women will have a fetus presenting by the breech at term. External cephalic version offers the opportunity to reduce the rate of caesarean sections caused by breech presentation. We analysed retrospectively 51 cases of external cephalic version at our clinic. METHODS External cephalic version was performed 51 times between 37 and 41 weeks of pregnancy. RESULTS External cephalic version was successful in 32/51 cases (62,7%) with a consecutive rate of vaginal delivery of 71,9%. The best results were seen at 37 weeks of pregnancy with 81,25% of successful versions followed by 76,9% of vaginal deliveries. Complications were rare. There was just 1 case of emergency caesarean section due to persisting fetal bradycardia. CONCLUSION External cephalic version is an effective and safe treatment to enable vaginal delivery of cephalic presentation. For this operation, 37 weeks of pregnancy can be considered the best time.

Abstract
Methanol emissions from several deciduous tree species with predominantly mature leaves were measured under laboratory and field conditions. The emissions were modulated by temperature and light. Under constant light conditions in the laboratory, methanol emissions increased with leaf temperature, by up to 12% per degree. At constant temperatures, emissions doubled when light intensity (PAR) increased from darkness to 800 micromol x m(-2) x s(-1). A phenomenological description of light and temperature dependencies was derived from the laboratory measurements. This description was successfully applied to reproduce the diel cycle of methanol emissions from an English oak measured in the field. Labelling experiments with (13)CO(2) provided evidence that less than 10% of the emitted methanol was produced de novo by photosynthesis directly prior to emission. Hence, the light dependence of the emissions cannot be explained by instantaneous production from CO(2) fixation. Additional experiments with selective cooling of plant roots indicated that a substantial fraction of the emitted methanol may be produced in the roots or stem and transported to stomata by the transpiration stream. However, the transpiration stream cannot be considered as the main factor that determines methanol emissions by the investigated plants.

Abstract
One of the major limitations in advancing the understanding of tropospheric ozone and aerosol generation and developing strategies for their control is the technical ability to accurately measure volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This paper describes the design of a constant flow VOC sampler. The versatile sampler can be used for fully automated concentration and flux measurements of VOCs. The sampler incorporates a microprocessor control unit and provides highly accurate mass flow control and significant ease of operation. Sampling sequences can be programmed directly or by remote control through a PC. All important operational parameters necessary for a complete sampling audit trail are logged. Compact weatherproof housings and low power consumption allow operation at remote sites and locations which are sensitive to disturbances or have restricted access. Inner wetted surfaces of the sampler are constructed from non-contaminating materials that do not sorb or emit VOC, and thus permit the collection of representative samples even in environments with very low VOC concentrations. The cartridge magazine provides a maximum of 20 sequential cartridge samples, which allows for long-term air quality assessments. In the dual channel mode, two samples can be collected simultaneously through two independent sample loops, providing ten sequential sample pairs. This design allows the parallel collection of (a) quality assurance backup samples, (b) samples on two different types of cartridges/sorbents to allow a variety of analyses, or (c) differential samples for flux measurements using enclosure, aerodynamic profile, or relaxed eddy accumulation (REA) methods. Field applications including airplane profile measurements above a tropical rainforest area, as well as gradient and REA measurements over a mid-latitude mixed forest stand are described, and demonstrate the validity and flexibility of the system. In particular, the application of the VOC sampler as an integrated part of a REA system is emphasized.

Abstract
Macular corneal dystrophy (MCD) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by corneal opacities and caused by mutations in a carbohydrate sulfotransferase gene, known as CHST6. MCD type I patients show missense mutations in the CHST6-coding region, and MCD type II patients show a large deletion and replacement in the upstream region of CHST6. The objective of this study was to identify the genetic defect in CHST6 gene causing MCD in Italian families. We investigated MCD genotype by using polymerase chain reaction followed by direct sequencing, and results were confirmed by restriction analysis. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was performed to assess the presence of sulfated keratan sulfate in the serum of MCD patients. Biochemical analysis revealed a MCD type I phenotype in two families and a type II phenotype in another family. Two novel missense mutations and a polymorphism in the coding region of CHST6 gene were identified in patients with MCD type I. In one MCD II family, a homozygous deletion in the upstream region of CHST6 gene was found.

Abstract
Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) is an interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma)-induced enzyme, which is suggested to play an important role in the prevention of allogeneic fetal rejection. IDO effects the suppression of T-cell activity by catabolizing the essential amino acid l-tryptophan. We studied IDO expression by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in dendritic cells and by real-time RT-PCR in monocytes of patients undergoing allogeneic transplantation for leukaemia, who developed acute graft-versus-host disease (aGvHD), and compared the IDO expression with that of pregnant women and healthy volunteers. A spontaneous IDO expression was detected in the monocytes of 20 pregnant women with an IDO/glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) ratio at a median of 1.0%, whereas none of 15 healthy volunteers or patients after allogeneic transplant had any detectable spontaneous IDO expression. The IDO expression increased by in vitro IFN-gamma stimulation in pregnant women (median 116%), healthy volunteers (median 11.7%) and patients with a low-grade aGvHD (grades 0-II) 28 days after transplant (median 433%) but not in patients with a severe aGvHD (grades III-IV) (median 0%), which was highly significant (P < 0.01). IDO expression was also measured in dendritic cells by qualitative RT-PCR, where a spontaneous IDO expression was detected in 16 of 31 (52%) pregnant women versus none of 17 healthy volunteers and none of 62 studied patients after transplant. IFN-gamma-induced IDO expression was detected in all pregnant women, all volunteers and 47 of 49 (96%) patients with a low-grade aGvHD (grades 0-II) after transplant, whereas only in two of 13 (16%) patients with aGvHD grade III-IV was IFN-gamma-induced IDO expression observed. These data suggest that IDO expression might be involved in the development of allogeneic immune tolerance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE An 8-week randomized, reference-controlled, double-blind, multi-centre clinical trial investigated Kava-Kava LI 150 in Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD; ICD-10: F41.1). METHOD 129 out-patients received either 400 mg Kava LI 150, 10 mg Buspirone or 100 mg Opipramol daily for 8 weeks. At week 9, subjects were seen to check for symptoms of withdrawal or relapse. Primary outcome measures comprised the HAMA scale and the proportion of responders at week 8. Secondary measures were the Boerner Anxiety Scale (BOEAS), SAS, CGI, a self-rating scale for well-being (Bf-S), a sleep questionnaire (SF-B), a quality-of-life questionnaire (AL) and global judgements by investigator and patients. RESULTS In 127 patients (ITT) no significant differences could be observed regarding all efficacy and safety measures. About 75% of patients were classified as responders (50% reduction of HAMA score) in each treatment group, about 60% achieved full remission. CONCLUSION Kava-Kava LI150 is well tolerated and as effective as Buspirone and Opipramol in the acute treatment of out-patients suffering from GAD.

Abstract
Topically applied capsaicin (CAS 404-86-4) induces the release of substance P, a neurotransmitter, from sensory C-fibres. In addition, there is a specific blockade of transport and de-novo synthesis of substance P. As a result, repeated applications of capsaicin bring about a long lasting desensitisation to pain (increase of pain threshold). The desensitising effect is fully reversible. The confirmed pharmacodynamic actions and a number of double-blind clinical studies indicate that local capsicum preparations are very suitable for the treatment of neuropathic pain or musculoskeletal disorders, with or without inflammatory components. In a double-blind, randomised parallel-group study a capsicum plaster was compared with a placebo for 3 weeks in 154 patients with non-specific back pain. Inclusion criteria were a history of back pain for a minimum period of 3 months and a degree of pain of 5 or more on an eleven grade visual analogue scale. The principal target variable consisted of the score of 3 combined pain scales. Secondary efficacy measures were tests of mobility, a disability index (in the context of Arhus low back rating scale) and global assessments by physicians and patients. For patients to be rated as responders their total pain score at the final examination after 3 weeks of treatment had to show a reduction by at least 30% of the baseline value. The study unequivocally achieved the target criterion with a rate of responders in the capsicum group of 60.8% against 42.1% in the placebo group (p = 0.0219). The sum of the 3 separate pain scales decreased more markedly in the capsicum group than in the placebo group (38.5% compared to 28.0%; p = 0.002). Relatively slight improvements of the impaired mobility and the functional status are explained by the characteristics of the disorder treated. The efficacy ratings by observers and patients was definitely in favour of capsicum. Adverse effects--mostly harmless and resolving spontaneously--were reported by 15 patients in the capsicum group and by 9 in the placebo group. The tolerance ratings by investigators and patients were superior to the placebo product. This, however, partly is due to the local pharmacological actions of the drug. As in comparably positive randomised studies with capsaicin cream in patients with osteoarthritis or fibromyalgia it was shown that a capsicum plaster preparation can also be used to advantage in chronic non-specific back pain.

Abstract
Carps, both sexes, 3 years old, weighing about 1 kg, and tenches of both sexes, 6 years old, weight about 250 g, were caught from a Thuringian lake without industrial pollution in November 1995 (fish without food uptake, water temperature at about 10 degrees C) and kept for 2 weeks in basins with clean water and addition of 0, 0.1, 1.0 or 10.0 mg/l phenobarbital-Na (PB). The concentration of PB was controlled during and at the end of the exposure period. The animals were fed pellets, but no food uptake was observed. After 24-48 h in fresh water the fish were sacrificed and the following hepatic parameters were immediately determined biochemically: monooxygenase functions: cytochrome P450 (P450) content, ethylmorphine N-demethylation (EN), ethoxycoumarin O-deethylation (ECOD), ethoxyresorufin O-deethylation (EROD), 7-benzyloxy-4-methyl-coumarin O-debenzylation (BCDB); oxidase function indicators: microsomal Fe2+/NADPH dependent hydrogen peroxide formation (H2O2), microsomal Fe2+/NADPH dependent luminol and lucigenin amplified chemiluminescence (LMCL, LCCL), microsomal Fe2+/NADPH dependent lipid peroxide formation (LPO); oxidative state: lipid peroxidation products (TBARS) and GSH and GSSG. Additionally, the expression of three P450 isoforms, 1A1, 2B and 3A, was assessed immunohistochemically in tissue samples from brain, gill, heart, spleen, liver, gut and ovary of both fish species and in kidney of tenches. PB did not influence body or liver weights, but increased liver P450 concentration in both species by 50-100%, though not significantly. Carp: PB increased both EN and EROD significantly, but not ECOD and BCDB; H2O2 and TBARS were enhanced significantly. LPO, LMCL and LCCL were not significantly influenced. Tench: PB increased all monooxygenase reactions (EN, ECOD, BCDB and EROD), though only significantly ECOD; H2O2 was elevated only after treatment with 0.1 mg/l PB, whereas LPO was decreased (!) after treatment by all three concentrations, though significantly only after 1.0 mg/l PB. LMCL was depressed (not significantly), but LCCL increased 5fold. TBARS were significantly enhanced. P450 1A1 subtype expression was concentration dependently elevated by PB in gill and liver of both fish and in the heart and kidney of tenches, P450 2B and 3A isoforms expression was induced in brain, gill, heart, liver and gut of both fish and in the kidney of tenches. In summary, the increased activities of the monooxygenase reactions tested and the elevated expression of all three P450 isoforms investigated in certain tissues indicate an induction of the P450 families 1, 2 and 3 by PB in fish.

Abstract
Neurocan is one of the major chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans of perinatal rodent brain. HEK-293 cells producing neurocan recombinantly show changes in their behavior. The expression of full-length neurocan led to a detachment of the secreting cells and the formation of floating spheroids. This occurred in the continuous presence of 10% fetal bovine serum in the culture medium. Cells secreting fragments of neurocan-containing chondroitin sulfate chains and the C-terminal domain of the molecule showed a similar behavior, whereas cells expressing fragments of neurocan-containing chondroitin sulfate chains but lacking parts of the C-terminal domain did not show spheroid formation. Cells secreting the hyaluronan-binding N-terminal domain of neurocan showed an enhanced adhesiveness. When untransfected HEK-293 cells were plated on a surface conditioned by spheroid-forming cells, they also formed spheroids. This effect could be abolished by chondroitinase treatment of the conditioned surface. The observations indicate that the ability of the chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan neurocan to modulate the adhesive character of extracellular matrices is dependent on the structural integrity of the C-terminal domain of the core protein.

Abstract
Here we report that the Saccharomyces cerevisiae RBP29 (SGN1, YIR001C) gene encodes a 29-kDa cytoplasmic protein that binds to mRNA in vivo. Rbp29p can be co-immunoprecipitated with the poly(A) tail-binding protein Pab1p from crude yeast extracts in a dosage- and RNA-dependent manner. In addition, recombinant Rbp29p binds preferentially to poly(A) with nanomolar binding affinity in vitro. Although RBP29 is not essential for cell viability, its deletion exacerbates the slow growth phenotype of yeast strains harboring mutations in the eIF4G genes TIF4631 and TIF4632. Furthermore, overexpression of RBP29 suppresses the temperature-sensitive growth phenotype of specific tif4631, tif4632, and pab1 alleles. These data suggest that Rbp29p is an mRNA-binding protein that plays a role in modulating the expression of cytoplasmic mRNA.

Abstract
In a randomised double-blind comparative trial, the antidepressant efficacy of a daily dose of 800 mg of the St. John's wort extract LoHyp-57 (dry extract of St. John's wort, drug extrakt ratio 5-7:1, solvent, ethanol 60% [w/w]) was shown to be equivalent to that of 20 mg fluoxetine (CAS 54910-89-3) in elderly patients with mild or moderate depressive episodes according to ICD 10 (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems). Treatment was given for six weeks. 149 out-patients (129 females and 20 males) were included in the intention-to-treat analysis. 72 of these patients were assigned to the ICD 10 diagnostic criterion F32.0 (mild depressive episode), while 77 patients were suffering from moderate depressive episodes, corresponding to F32.1. The principal target criterion was the patient's global score on the HAMILTON Depression Scale (items 1-17). During the six-week course of treatment with LoHyp-57, the HAMILTON global score fell from 16.60 points at entry to 7.91 points, and in the fluoxetine sample it fell from 17.18 to 8.11 points. In the group of patients with mild depressive episodes, the score showed a mean fall from 14.21 to 6.21 points on LoHyp-57, and from 15.21 to 7.46 points on fluoxetine. In patients with moderate depressive episodes, the score showed a mean fall from 18.73 to 9.43 points on LoHyp-57 and from 19.10 to 8.75 points on fluoxetine. The efficacy of both medications was found to be equivalent both in mild and moderate depressive episodes. Both treatment groups showed adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Twelve ADRs with a possible relationship to the study medication were reported during treatment with LoHyp-57. Six patients were prematurely withdrawn from treatment with the study medication for this reason. On fluoxetine 17 ADRs occurred with a possible relationship to the study medication. These led to abandonment of treatment and therefore premature withdrawal from the study in 8 cases.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulphide emission in lichens as a response to low concentration SO2 , fumigation was investigated. In an open flow-through system several lichen species were fumigated with 36 ppb SO2 , Two species were also fumigated with higher concentrations (72, 119, 122 and 198 ppb SO2 ,). Hydrogen sulphide emission was monitored concurrently by cryogenic trapping and analysis with gas chromatography. All tested species increased H, S emission significantly in response to fumigation with 36 ppb SO2 . Parmelina tiliacea (L.) Hale and Cladina rangiferina (L.) Wigg. released significantly more H2 S (0.098±0.015 and 0.073±0.013 pmol H2 S g-1 d. wt s-1 , respectively) than Parmelina quercina (Ach.) Hale, Ramalina menziesii Tayl. and Parmelia sulcata Tayl. (0.028 ± 0.01, 0.025±0.014 and 0.023±0.013 pmol H2 S g-1 d. wt s-1 , respectively). Release of H2 S in Hypogymnia physodes was enhanced by increasing SO2 concentrations up to 72 ppb SO2 . No significant difference in H2 S emission in the dark vs. in the light was found. Generally, no correlation was found between photosynthetic activity and H2 S emission for the tested species. Uptake of SO2 was similar for all species, at 24.7 ± 5.6 pmol SO2 g-1 d. wt s-1 in 36 ppb SO2 and increasing at greater SO2 concentrations. Therefore, H2 S-S release represents only 0.11-0.74% of SO2 -S uptake.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of our study is to elucidate whether human oocytes/embryos secrete IFN gamma and/or IL-10 and whether the fertilization process depends on the balance between these cytokines. METHODS A total of 142 embryo culture media from 24 patients were collected and the cytokine levels were tested with ELISA. RESULTS IFN gamma and IL-10 were detectable in 40.1% and 29.6% of culture media respectively. The difference of IFN gamma and IL-10 levels in media from fertilized oocytes between day 1 and day 2 are significant (0.46 vs. 1.47 and 34.2 vs. 12.7, respectively). However there was no significant difference between the IFN gamma levels of the media from fertilized and nonfertilized oocytes 0.46 vs. 0.85 at day 1 and 1.47 vs 1.49 at day 2, as well as IL-10 levels 34.2 vs. 30.9 at day 1 and 12.7 vs. 9.58 at day 2 respectively. CONCLUSIONS Human preimplantation embryos secrete the cytokines IFN gamma and IL-10. No effect of these cytokines on fertilization process could be shown.

Abstract
Several models exist for the aetiology and therapy of recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA). They are based in part on the assumption that an increased materno-fetal histocompatibility results in an insufficient maternal immunological recognition of the fetus, and thus renders the maternal immune system unable to sustain the pregnancy. The involvement of the FcgammaII receptor (FcgammaIIR) in RSA was suggested, since FcgammaIIR-blocking antibodies, present in normal pregnancies, could not be found in patients suffering from RSA. The FcgammaIIR is known to be functionally and structurally dimorphic, which results in a responder, respectively non-responder pattern. We used an in vitro proliferation assay to distinguish between FcgammaIIR responder and non-responder phenotypes. In 29 RSA couples we found 97% (28/29) of RSA patients and 100% (29/29) of their partners to be responders, whereas 50 fertile couples and a further 100 unrelated controls revealed distributions of responder vs. non-responder of 73% vs. 27% and 70% vs. 30%, respectively. These differences (RSA vs. controls) are highly significant (P less than or equal to 0.0001). Our results suggest further that the FcgammaIIR dimorphism might be involved in the pathogenesis of RSA.

Abstract
In a two-centre prospective study 20 patients with a history of unsuccessful sterility treatment underwent immunization with paternal lymphocytes to improve the pregnancy rate in the subsequent therapeutic AIH or IVF/ET cycle. Unsuccessful sterility treatment was defined as no pregnancy after 8 properly monitored AIH cycles and at least one diagnostic IVF/ET or more than 3 IVF with transfer of 3 embryos. After successful immunization expressed by the induction of Fc-receptor blocking antibodies 10/20 patients became pregnant. Nine of these patients delivered healthy children, one patient experienced a first trimester abortion. A successful second pregnancy occurred in 6 of these patients. No significant correlation between the previous history and pregnancy success could be found, except a slight advantage for patients with a history other than tubal sterility. There were no differences in the anamnestic data as well as in the success rate between the two independent centres Göttingen and Leuven (10 patients each). These data suggest, that adjuvant immunotherapy might improve markedly the pregnancy rates in selected cases of sterility.

Abstract
In a prospective study 140 couples who had at least three spontaneous abortions (RSA) were studied for the presence of Fc receptor blocking antibodies detected by the erythrocyte antibody rosette inhibition (EAI) assay, for anti-paternal cytotoxic antibodies (APCA), and for mixed lymphocyte culture inhibiting (MLCI) antibodies before and after active immunization with paternal lymphocytes. The comparative analysis revealed the EAI assay to possess a higher sensitivity than the APCA and/or MLCI tests in monitoring the specific immune response after active immunization. The success of pregnancy in EAI positive post-immunization patients was not influenced by the presence or absence of APCA or MLCI. In the light of a successful pregnancy outcome of 85.7% (n = 37) in this study we conclude that the monitoring of Fc receptor blocking antibodies is useful in active immunization protocols for RSA patients.

Abstract
In order to remove the EAI "blocking" activity, EA inhibition positive sera from patients with recurrent abortions were absorbed after alloimmunization with paternal lymphocytes by the lymphoblastoid cell line (LCL) of the husband. To avoid non-specific binding via the Fc-receptor, the cells were first fixed with 0.05% glutaraldehyde. Absorption was performed for 3 h at 4 degrees C. For subsequent elution, the cells were incubated with 0.1 M glycine-HCl, pH 2.3, for 30 min at 4 degrees C. After each step, EAI assay was carried out to determine the "blocking" activity in the supernatants. Furthermore, 10% SDS-PAGE and immunoblotting with goat antihuman IgG of the whole serum and the supernatants were performed. The results obtained give evidence that the EAI "blocking" activity can be absorbed by and eluted from the LCL of the immunizing husband, and is due to an IgG antibody directed against an antigen present on the LCL. Further absorption experiments with trophoblast cells will show whether this antigen is also displayed by the trophoblast.
