A systematic review to investigate whether birth weight affects the autonomic nervous system in adulthood. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the relationship between birth weight and the autonomic nervous system in adulthood through a systematic review. DATA SOURCE This is a systematic review of publications without limitation of year and language. We included studies involving the autonomic nervous system and birth weight in adults. Manuscripts were selected based on electronic searches of Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Web of Science Cochrane Library and Scopus databases, using "Autonomic Nervous System" OR "Heart Rate" OR "Heart Rate Variability" AND "Birth Weight" as a search strategy. This review is registered on the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews - PROSPERO (ID: CRD42020165622). DATA SYNTHESIS We found 894 articles; 215 were excluded for duplicity. Of the remaining 679 studies, 11 remained. Two were excluded because they did not specifically treat the autonomic nervous system or birth weight. There were nine publications, two cohort and seven cross-sectional studies. The main findings were that extreme, very low, low or high birth weight may have some impact on the autonomic nervous system in adult life. CONCLUSIONS Birth weight outside the normality rate may have a negative influence on the autonomic nervous system, causing autonomic dysfunction and increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases in adult life. Thus, the importance of the follow-up of health professionals from pregnancy to gestation and throughout life, with preventive care being emphasized.

Abstract
Fundamento Tem-se sugerido que o consumo de bebidas energéticas (BEs) possa afetar a atividade cardiovascular. Objetivos Investigar os efeitos agudos da ingestão de BE sobre a variabilidade da frequência cardíaca (VFC) recuperação cardiovascular após exercício aeróbico moderado em homens de diferentes capacidades cardiorrespiratórias. Métodos Este é um estudo randomizado, duplo cego, crossover, controlado por placebo. Vinte e oito jovens adultos foram divididos em dois grupos de acordo com o pico de consumo de oxigênio (pico de VO2): (1) pico de VO2 alto (AO) – pico de VO2 > 52,15 mL/Kg/min, e (2) pico de VO2 baixo (BO) - pico de VO2 <52,15 mL/Kg/min. Os indivíduos de ambos os grupos foram submetidos a dois protocolos de exercícios em ordem aleatória: exercício moderado aeróbico (60% de pico de VO2) após a ingestão de 250 mL de água (protocolo placebo) ou 250 mL de BE (protocolo BE). Durante os testes de exercício, foram registrados valores de parâmetros cardiorrespiratórios e de VFC. Resultados Foram observadas diferenças significativas para o índice de LF (unidades normalizadas) entre “repouso” e “Rec1” nos grupos de AO e BO durante o protocolo BE. Para a razão LF/HF, foram observadas diferenças significativas entre “repouso” e Rec1 nos grupos AO e BO nos protocolos BE. Conclusão A ingestão aguda de BE retardou a recuperação da frequência cardíaca após o exercício em indivíduos com capacidade cardiorrespiratória baixa e indivíduos com capacidade cardiorrespiratória alta.

Abstract
AIMS Results regarding the effects of caffeine (CAF) intake on the autonomic control of heart rate recovery exercise remain inconclusive. Thus far, no study has used effect measures to pool the results of different experiments. We aim to assess the acute effect of CAF intake before exercise on the recovery of heart rate variability (HRV) after exercise through a systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SYNTHESIS Randomized controlled clinical trials were included; sample composed of physically active or trained adults; CAF should be offered/ingested before exercise, with dosage between 100 and 400 mg or between 2 and 6 mg/kg and administration/ingestion route analogous in the protocols; studies required to present results of HRV indices before and after exercise. Bias risk analysis and meta-analysis were performed. Twelve studies were included in the qualitative synthesis and five studies were encompassed in the quantitative synthesis (meta-analysis). For the Root-mean-square standard deviation (RMSSD) index we revealed p = 0.67, Total 95% confidence interval (95% CI) ranged from -0.45 to 0.29, and 66.7% for heterogeneity between groups were reported. Concerning the High Frequency (HF) index, we observed p = 0.22, Total 95% CI that ranged from -0.34 to 0.30, and 44% for heterogeneity between groups. CONCLUSIONS CAF intake did not affect heart rate variability recovery after exercise.

Abstract
Background Although there are a considerable number of clinical studies on nitrate (NO3) rich beetroot juice (BRJ) and hypertension, it is difficult to indicate the real effects of NO3 from BRJ on the BP of hypertensive patients because there are still no estimates of the effects of NO3 derived from BRJ on the BP of hypertension patients. Objective To clarify these effects, we developed a systematic literature review with a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCTs). Design The searches were accomplished through EMBASE, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Web of Science, and LILACS databases. The study included single or double-blinded RCTs and participants older than 18 years with hypertension [systolic BP (SBP) > 130 mmHg and diastolic BP (DBP) > 80 mmHg]. NO3 BRJ was required to be consumed in a format that possibly blinded participants/researchers. These studies should also report the SBP and DBP values (mmHg) measured before and after the treatment. Risk of Bias tools and GRADE were enforced. Results Seven studies were included (218 participants). BRJ intervention time ranged from 3 to 60 days with daily dosages of 70–250 mL of BRJ. After the intervention with NO3 from BRJ, SBP underwent significant changes (p < 0.001) of −4.95 (95% CI: −8.88; −1.01) (GRADE: ⊕⊕⊕○ Moderate), but not for DBP (p = 0.06) −0.90 mmHg (95% CI: −3.16; 1.36) (GRADE: ⊕⊕⊕○ Moderate), compared to the control group. Conclusions The NO3 derived from BRJ reduces SBP, but not DBP in patients with arterial hypertension. Abstract
CONTEXT Exercise and anabolic steroids are anticipated to promote fat mass reduction and so to decrease the number of comorbidities related to excessive weight. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to verify the influence of aerobic exercise and the use of steroids on the accumulation of adipose tissue and on the biochemical limitations of Wistar rats nourished by a hypercaloric diet. METHODS Forty, young male Wistar rats were split into four groups: obese control (n=10), obese under treatment (n=10), obese under aerobic exercise (n=10) and obese under aerobic exercise and treatment (n=10). All animals were fed with a hypercaloric diet and animals under treatment received intramuscular testosterone. Body (weight and visceral fat) and blood (lipidogram, glucose, and liver enzymes) parameters were assessed. RESULTS The group treated with aerobic exercise and testosterone revealed a reduction in body weight and visceral, perirenal, retroperitoneal and epididymal fats, accompanied by the blood levels of glucose, lactate, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, and lactate dehydrogenase; following high-intensity physical activity. CONCLUSION The results support the theory that the combination of steroids and physical activity reduces the side-effects of androgenic-anabolic hormones and conveys benefits to some constraints.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In mechanically ventilated subjects, intra-tracheal secretions can be aspirated with either open suction systems (OSS) or closed suction systems (CSS). In contrast to CSS, conventional OSS require temporarily disconnecting the patient from the ventilator, which briefly diminishes PEEP and oxygen supply. On the other hand, CSS are more expensive and less effective at aspirating secretions. Thus, it was hypothesized that the 2 procedures differentially affect pulmonary and cardiovascular parameters after suction. METHODS Subjects in the ICU (N = 66) were quasi-randomized for initial treatment with OSS or CSS in a crossover design. To compare the potential for these suction systems to compromise cardiorespiratory stability, changes in cardiopulmonary physiology were assessed from before to just after use of each suction system (three 10-s aspirations). RESULTS For most pulmonary and cardiovascular parameters (ie, peak inspiratory pressure, airway resistance, pressure plateau, heart rate, and arterial pressures), the effects of aspiration inversely correlated with baseline values for that parameter, with a similar regression slope between suction systems. However, when controlling for baseline values, OSS caused significantly greater increases in airway resistance and peak inspiratory pressure (P < .001 and < .01 vs CSS, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Elevated airway resistance prior to endotracheal suction may justify use of a CSS and contraindicate a conventional OSS in mechanically ventilated subjects. Adoption of this approach into clinical guidelines may prevent suction-induced pulmonary injury in subjects, especially for those with underlying diseases involving increased airway resistance or increased alveolar pressure. Abstract
A ansiedade é caracterizada pelo sentimento de tensão, nervosismo, apreensão e preocupação que pode alterar a modulação do sistema nervoso autônomo sobre a condução elétrica ligada ao coração, determinando a intensidade nos batimentos cardíacos modificando a variabilidade da frequência cardíaca que é um importante indicador de condições normais e patológicas. Assim, o objetivo do estudo foi analisar a relação existente entre a ansiedade e o processo de regulação autonômica cardíaca. Este estudo trata-se de uma revisão integrativa desenvolvido por meio de buscas nas bases de dados da Lilacs, Medline e SciELO, com os descritores em ciências da saúde e operador booleano: ansiedade AND frequência cardíaca e, ansiedade AND sistema nervoso autônomo. A busca foi realizada durante o mês de setembro de 2017, sendo incluídos artigos disponíveis na íntegra; em português e inglês e; publicados nos últimos 06 anos. Excluiu-se artigos que não fossem originais, teses, dissertações e monografias. Obteve-se um total de 10 artigos, nos quais observou-se que a ansiedade altera a resposta autonômica, assim quando o corpo entra em tensão, aumentase a frequência cardíaca, o predomínio do sistema simpático e no relaxamento ocorre o domínio parassimpático. Assim indivíduos portadores de ansiedade apresentam menor variação na frequência cardíaca e possuem uma capacidade menor de interação social. Com isto, evidencia-se uma baixa adaptação do sistema nervoso autônomo em casos de ansiedade, sendo que a variabilidade da frequência cardíaca encontra-se reduzida; condição esta que pode ser classificada como patológica.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the related scientific production on body image in healthy female adolescents and its association with physical activity. A systematic review of national and international journals was conducted using the major electronic databases. The following inclusion criteria selection were used: sample of female adolescents, with different results; papers in English, Spanish and Portuguese; papers published from 2005 to 2015. Eighteen studies were included and carefully analyzed. The most published paper concentrations were found in Europe (61.2 %). Several studies (95%) used questionnaires as a research instrument to assess physical activity and 55% studies used scales to analyze the body image. No increase was found in the production of literature involving body image study and physical active behavior in healthy female adolescents. In conclusion, the main findings of this review relate to the lack of parameters for the measurement of physical activity and body image analysis. Thus, although it is a current thematic area in the literature, it is possible to consider that the diversity of methodological design between studies makes it difficult to compare the data, making it imperative to standardize instruments and definitions.

Abstract
The post-exercise recovery period is associated with changes in autonomic modulation, which can promote an intercurrent-favorable environment. Caffeine has the ability to release catecholamines, but its effects after exercises is little explored. The present study aims to evaluate the acute effects of caffeine on the autonomic control and cardiorespiratory parameters after moderate intensity aerobic exercise. 32 young males (23,59 ± 3,45 years) were submitted to two protocols: Placebo and Caffeine, consisting of 15 minutes of rest, 30 minutes of exercise on a treadmill to 60% on VO2peak, followed by 60 minutes of recovery. Heart rate variability indices and cardiorespiratory parameters were determined at different times during the protocols. The RMSSD and SD1 indices recovered faster in placebo (p < 0.05). The systolic blood pressure differences were found from the 1st to the 5th minute of recovery with the caffeine protocol and from the 1st and 3rd minute with the placebo, whereas, for diastolic blood pressure, significant differences (p < 0.0001) were observed only for the caffeine protocol at the 1st and 3rd minutes of recovery. Caffeine was shown to be capable of delaying parasympathetic recovery but did not influence the behavior of the respiratory rate, oxygen saturation or frequency-domain HRV indices.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The elderly population grows globally every day, and along with it the incidence of high blood pressure also grows, following these data scientists seek tools to improve the health of this population, a widely used tool for assessing cardiovascular function is the heart rate variability(HRV), that is a mecanism that allows the investigation of oscillations in the intervals between consecutive heart beats (RR intervals). There are already studies on the autonomic nervous system in the elderly population, however, these studies investigated normotensive patients and there is little research in hypertensive patients. AIM To compare the cardiac autonomic modulation between healthy elderly and hypertensive elderly. METHOD The total sample was 80 elderly people- 40 healthy elderly and 40 elderly (HBP). Anthropometric data, HRV analysis and IPAQ questionnaire were collected. For the analysis of cardiac modulation data in the time domain (pNN50, SDNN and RMSSD) and frequency domain (LF and HF). The geometric analysis (RRtri, TINN, SD1, SD2 and SD1/SD2 ratios). RESULTS In the time domain the MeanRR index presented a HAS increase 832.35 ± 104.46 ms vs control 782.73 ± 112.78 ms (p = 0.040). In the SDNN, there was a 58.35ms decrease vs the SAH 43.15 ms (p = 0.030). In the frequency domain, HF decreased control 247.00 ms2 vs HAS 157.00 ms2 (p = 0.002). In the geometric, the TINN and SD2 in the HAS group decreased in relation to the control from 203.38 ± 80.26 ms to 161.83 ± 53.25 ms (p = 0.018) and from 71.95 ms to 59.40 ms (p = 0.051). The mean SD1/SD2 ratio showed an increase between the Control and SAH groups from 0.22 ± 0.10 to 4.09 ± 1.18 and there was a statistical difference (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION Hypertensive elderly patients present decreased heart rate variability and decreased parasympathetic modulation when compared to normotensive elderly.

Abstract
The side stream cigarette smoke (SSCS) is a contributing factor in the pathogenesis of cigarette smoking-induced toxicity. Hemoglobin (Hb), myoglobin (Mb), neuroglobin (Ngb), and cytoglobin (Cygb) are globins with different distributions and functions in the tissues and have similar actions by providing O2 (oxygen) for respiratory chain, detoxification of ROS and nitric oxide (NO), and protect tissues against irreversible lesions. We aimed to investigate the effects of SSCS exposure on gene and protein expression of Ngb, Cygb, and Mb in different tissue. The Ngb and Cygb gene and protein expression in the cerebral cortex increased after 1 week of rat exposure to SSCS. In hippocampus, the Ngb gene and protein expression increased after 1 week or more of exposure and no change was observed in Cygb gene and protein expression. In myocardium, Mb and Cygb gene expression increased at 1 and 4 weeks of exposure, while protein expression of both increased at 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks. In lung, observed an increase in Cygb gene and protein expression after 2, 3, and 4 weeks of exposure. Abstract
This is an integrative review which aimed to evaluate the use of the SPIKES protocol in Oncology. We selected articles published in Medline and CINAHL databases between 2005-2015, in English, with the descriptors defined by the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH):cancer, neoplasms, plus the uncontrolled descriptor: protocol spikes.
Six articles met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed in full, three thematic categories were established: aspects inherent to the health care professional; Aspects related to the patient and aspects related to the protocol. The main effects of the steps of SPIKES protocol can provide the strengthening of ties between health professionals and patients, and ensure the maintenance and quality of this relationship.
The results indicate an important limiting factor for effective doctor-patient relationship, the little training provided to medical professionals communication of bad news, verified by the difficulty reported in this moment through interviews in the analyzed studies.

Abstract
Background Considering the inequalities and the areas of low socioeconomic status in Brazil, access to health services is a challenge and the delay between diagnosis and treatment represents an important factor of worse prognosis in patients with breast cancer. Herein, we describe the clinical and epidemiological profiles of women with breast cancer and evaluate their access to health services, as well as treatment delays, at a reference centre of the Cariri region, Ceará, Brazil. Methods This is a retrospective study that included 473 women treated with breast cancer between 2009 and 2011 at the Oncology Centre of the Cariri. Results The majority of these patients were aged between 40 and 69 years old (65.7%), without a completed high school degree (89.2%). They were married (62.9%) and were already diagnosed but had not yet been subjected to any previous treatment (77.8%). It was observed that 91.8% were referred from the public health service, and treatment was paid for by the public health service in 92.9% of the cases. The patients whose source of referral was the public system waited longer between diagnosis and the treatment initiation (p = 0.031; Mann–Whitney’s test), with a median waiting time of 71.5 days versus 39 days for those receiving referrals from private services. In addition, those with public referrals prior to diagnosis also experienced a longer waiting time between the first medical visit and treatment initiation (77 days vs. 37 days; p = 0.036; Mann–Whitney’s test), with the waiting time for the biopsy being an important factor in this delay. Conclusions Late diagnosis was often the result of inefficiency of the prevention policies coupled with difficulty accessing the public health network. It was commonly observed that, even after diagnosis, the patients needed to wait too long before entering the Oncology Service because of long waiting queues in the public health system.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is characterized by progressive muscle weakness that can lead to disability. Owing to functional difficulties faced by individuals with DMD, the use of assistive technology is essential to provide or facilitate functional abilities. In DMD, cardiac autonomic dysfunction has been reported in addition to musculoskeletal impairment. Consequently, the objective was to investigate acute cardiac autonomic responses, by Heart Rate Variability (HRV), during computer tasks in subjects with DMD. METHOD HRV was assessed by linear and nonlinear methods, using the heart rate monitor Polar RS800CX chest strap Electrocardiographic measuring device. Then, 45 subjects were included in the group with DMD and 45 in the healthy Typical Development (TD) control group. They were assessed for twenty minutes at rest sitting, and five minutes after undergoing a task on the computer. RESULTS Individuals with DMD had a statistically significant lower parasympathetic cardiac modulation at rest when compared to the control group, which further declined when undergoing the tasks on the computer. CONCLUSION DMD patients presented decreased HRV and exhibited greater intensity of cardiac autonomic responses during computer tasks characterized by vagal withdrawal when compared to the healthy TD control subjects.

Abstract
Background The aim of the study was to evaluate the evolution of patients subject to physical treatment based on guidelines of functional rehabilitation after surgery anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Methods This is a prospective study of 177 patients with anterior cruciate ligament injury, who underwent surgery and physical therapy guideline conducted in an orthopedic clinic in São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. The clinical evolution of patients was made according to Lysholm and IKDC questionnaire on the 1st day after surgery with 30, 90 and 180 days of treatment. Results There was statistically significant increase in the gross values of Lysholm and IKDC questionnaires during the treatment (p < 0.001), which indicates progressive gain of function. According to the scores obtained from the IKDC, it can be observed that in stage 1 the average progress was 53.5 %, falling to 50 % in stage 2, and 26.1 % in stage 3. As to Lysholm score, it started with 87.7 %, falling to 62.6 % in the second stage and 7 % in the third stage, both statistically significant (p < 0.001). The rehabilitation-oriented functional objectives priority is to quickly get the exercises to gain breadth, strength and proprioception, optimizing and improving the integration of the athlete back to sport. Conclusion Synthesizing the gradual gain of function and according to clinical outcomes assessed by IKDC and Lysholm, the functional guideline presented may be considered an alternative for rehabilitation of patients in postoperative anterior cruciate ligament.

Abstract
Pheochromocytoma and Ganglioneuroblastoma are separate diseases and a rare combination in which the diagnosis can only be confirmed by pathological examination after tumor excision. We reported here a case of ganglioneuroblastoma encapsulated in pheochromocytoma. The patient is a woman, 73 years old, hypertensive, with hypothyroidism, associated for 15 years with hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia, which had frequent complaints of low back pain. She underwent magnetic resonance and the findings were consistent with the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma. After surgery, anatomic, pathologic and immunohistochemistry analysis confirmed the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma composed by small ganglioneuroblastoma representation with the identification of small focus of infiltration of the adrenal capsule and adipose tissue by pheochromocytoma. This rare association can instigate the discussion of methods of diagnosis, more effective and more appropriate treatments for each patient.

Abstract
Introduction The objective was to analyze rates of stroke-related mortality and incidence of hospital admissions in Brazilians aged 15 to 49 years according to region and age group between 2008 and 2012. Methods Secondary analysis was performed in 2014 using data from the Hospital and Mortality Information Systems and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. Stroke was defined by ICD, 10th revision (I60–I64). Crude and standardized mortality (WHO reference) and incidence of hospital admissions per 100,000 inhabitants, stratified by region and age group, were estimated. Absolute and relative frequencies; and linear regression were also used. The software used was Stata 11.0. Results There were 35,005 deaths and 131,344 hospital admissions for stroke in Brazilians aged 15–49 years old between 2008 and 2012. Mortality decreased from 7.54 (95% CI 7.53; 7.54) in 2008 to 6.32 (95% CI 6.31; 6.32) in 2012 (β = -0.27, p = 0.013, r2 = 0.90). During the same time, incidence of hospital admissions stabilized: 24.67 (95% CI 24.66; 24.67) in 2008 and 25.11 (95% CI 25.10; 25.11) in 2012 (β = 0.09, p = 0.692, r2 = 0.05). There was a reduction in mortality in all Brazilian regions and in the age group between 30 and 49 years. Incidence of hospitalizations decreased in the South, but no significant decrease was observed in any age group. Conclusion We observed a decrease in stroke-related mortality, particularly in individuals over 30 years old, and stability of the incidence of hospitalizations; and also regional variation in stroke-related hospital admission incidence and mortality among Brazilian young adults.

Abstract
PURPOSE In the current study, we aimed to review literature findings showing the clinical importance of cardiac autonomic modulation assessed by heart rate variability analysis in breast cancer (BC) patients and survivors. METHODS We conducted a systematic review according to The PRISMA Statement in Medline, Scopus and Web of Science (_-2015) databases. The search was limited to articles in English language, published in peer-reviewed journals, and with adult age samples only (e.g., women, patients, or survivors, diagnosed with BC in any stage). We included observational studies and randomized trials. Detailed heart rate variability analysis (instruments, data collection protocol, and analysis methods) was required. Search terms included autonomic nervous system, heart rate variability, sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, autonomic dysfunction, vagal nervous and breast neoplasms, breast cancer and breast tumor. RESULTS Twelve studies were included in this review. The clinical importance of cardiac autonomic modulation assessed by heart rate variability analysis in BC patients and survivors is demonstrated by association with effects of BC surgery, and treatments, and the adverse effects of surgery and treatments on survivors (e.g., cardiotoxicity, fatigue, and stress). LIMITATIONS The strength of evidence of included studies is low: small samples size and heterogeneity, presence of confounders, and observational studies design. CONCLUSIONS The heart rate variability analysis could be used as a complementary non-invasive tool for the early diagnosis and better prognosis of autonomic dysfunction, and survival in BC patients. There are many potential clinical applications of heart rate variability analysis in BC patients, and the employment of such approaches could lead to lower impairment of autonomic function in this individuals.

Abstract
Introdução: O diabetes mellitus gestacional (DMG) é uma alteração patológica do metabolismo energético materno desencadeado pela incapacidade da gestante produzir quantidades suficientes de insulina para compensar a intolerância à glicose desencadeada pela ação do hormônio lactogênio placentário (HPL). Tendo em vista que os níveis plasmáticos do HPL são proporcionais à massa da placenta e que eles são máximos próximo ao período em que a placenta adquire seu maior tamanho e período que a hiperglicemia se manifesta na gestante com DMG, é possível inferir que talvez exista correlação entre a massa placentária e essa doença. Objetivo: Avaliar se existe correlação entre o DMG e a massa placentária. Métodos: Pesquisa descritiva, transversal e com abordagem quantitativa, que foi realizada em um hospital público de Santa Catarina, Brasil. A pesquisa incluiu 20 mulheres grávidas, 10 com e 10 sem DMG, que concordaram em participar do estudo. Resultados: A média das massas das placentas do Grupo Controle foi de 505,63±12,18 g, enquanto a do grupo com DMG foi de 561,00 ±14,25 g. Conclusão: Este estudo sugere que a massa placentária das gestantes com DMG é significativamente maior do que a massa das placentas das gestantes hígidas.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years, the application of nonlinear methods for analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) has increased. However, studies on the influence of music on cardiac autonomic modulation in those circumstances are rare. OBJECTIVE The research team aimed to evaluate the acute effects on HRV of selected auditory stimulation by 2 musical styles, measuring the results using nonlinear methods of analysis: Shannon entropy, symbolic analysis, and correlation-dimension analysis. DESIGN Prospective control study in which the volunteers were exposed to music and variables were compared between control (no auditory stimulation) and during exposure to music. SETTING All procedures were performed in a sound-proofed room at the Faculty of Science and Technology at São Paulo State University (UNESP), São Paulo, Brazil. PARTICIPANTS Participants were 22 healthy female students, aged between 18 and 30 y. INTERVENTION Prior to the actual intervention, the participants remained at rest for 20 min, and then they were exposed to one of the selected types of music, either classical baroque (64-84 dB) or heavy-metal (75-84 dB). Each musical session lasted a total of 5 min and 15 s. At a point occurring up to 1 wk after that day, the participants listened to the second type of music. The 2 types of music were delivered in a random sequence that depended on the group to which the participant was assigned. OUTCOME MEASURES The study analyzed the following HRV indices through Shannon entropy; symbolic analysis-0V%, 1V%, 2LV%, and 2ULV%; and correlation-dimension analysis. RESULTS During exposure to auditory stimulation by heavy-metal or classical baroque music, the study established no statistically significant variations regarding the indices for the Shannon entropy; the symbolic analysis-0V%, 1V%, and 2ULV%; and the correlation-dimension analysis. However, during heavy-metal music, the 2LV% index in the symbolic analysis was reduced compared with the controls. CONCLUSIONS Auditory stimulation with the heavy-metal music reduced the parasympathetic modulation of HRV, whereas no significant changes occurred in cardiac autonomic modulation during exposure to the classical music.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between users and health services is considered essential to strengthen the quality of care. However, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender population suffer from prejudice and discrimination in access and use of these services. This study aimed to identify the difficulties associated with homosexuality in access and utilization of health services. METHOD A systematic review conducted using PubMed, Cochrane, SciELO, and LILACS, considering the period from 2004 to 2014. The studies were evaluated according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criterias. Were included manuscripts written in English or Portuguese, articles examining the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender population's access to health services and original articles with full text available online. RESULTS The electronic databases search resulted in 667 studies, of which 14 met all inclusion criteria. Quantitative articles were predominant, showing the country of United States of America to be the largest producer of research on the topic. The studies reveal that the homosexual population have difficulties of access to health services as a result of heteronormative attitudes imposed by health professionals. The discriminatory attendance implies in human rights violations in access to health services. CONCLUSIONS The non-heterosexual orientation was a determinant factor in the difficulties of accessing health care. A lot must still be achieved to ensure access to health services for sexual minorities, through the adoption of holistic and welcoming attitudes. The results of this study highlight the need for larger discussions about the theme, through new research and debates, with the aim of enhancing professionals and services for the health care of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Persons.

Abstract
Objective To analyze the outcomes enabled by the neuromuscular electric stimulation in critically ill patients in intensive care unit assisted. Methods A systematic review of the literature by means of clinical trials published between 2002 and 2012 in the databases LILACS, SciELO, MEDLINE and PEDro using the descriptors “intensive care unit”, “physical therapy”, “physiotherapy”, “electric stimulation” and “randomized controlled trials”. Results We included four trials. The sample size varied between 8 to 33 individuals of both genders, with ages ranging between 52 and 79 years, undergoing invasive mechanical ventilation. Of the articles analyzed, three showed significant benefits of neuromuscular electrical stimulation in critically ill patients, such as improvement in peripheral muscle strength, exercise capacity, functionality, or loss of thickness of the muscle layer. Conclusion The application of neuromuscular electrical stimulation promotes a beneficial response in critically patients in intensive care.

Abstract
Objective To analyze the outcomes of increased or decreased intracranial pressure and/or the
decrease in cerebral perfusion pressure resulting from respiratory physiotherapy
on critically ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit. Methods Through a systematic review of the literature, clinical trials published between
2002 and 2012 were selected. The search involved the LILACS, SciELO, MedLine and
PEDro databases using the keywords "physical therapy", "physiotherapy",
"respiratory therapy" and "randomized controlled trials" combined with the keyword
"intracranial pressure". Results In total, five studies, including a total of 164 patients between 25 and 65 years
of age, reporting that respiratory physiotherapy maneuvers significantly increased
intracranial pressure without changing the cerebral perfusion pressure were
included. The articles addressed several techniques including vibration,
vibrocompression, tapping, postural drainage, and the endotracheal aspiration
maneuver. All patients required invasive mechanical ventilation. Conclusion Respiratory physiotherapy leads to increased intracranial pressure. Studies
suggest that there are no short-term hemodynamic or respiratory repercussions or
changes in the cerebral perfusion pressure. However, none of the studies evaluated
the clinical outcomes or ensured the safety of the maneuvers.

Abstract
Introduction Impact noise is characterized by acoustic energy peaks that last less than a second, at intervals of more than 1 s. Objective To quantify the levels of impact noise to which police officers are exposed during activities at the shooting range and to evaluate the attenuation of the hearing protector. Methods Measurements were performed in the shooting range of a military police department. An SV 102 audiodosimeter (Svantek) was used to measure sound pressure levels. Two microphones were used simultaneously: one external and one insertion type; the firearm used was a 0.40 Taurus® rimless pistol. Results The values obtained with the external microphone were 146 dBC (peak), and a maximum sound level of 129.4 dBC (fast). The results obtained with the insertion microphone were 138.7 dBC (peak), and a maximum sound level of 121.6 dBC (fast). Conclusion The findings showed high levels of sound pressure in the shooting range, which exceeded the maximum recommended noise (120 dBC), even when measured through the insertion microphone. Therefore, alternatives to improve the performance of hearing protection should be considered.

Introdução: O monitoramento da glicose pelo portador de diabetes melito é importante na prevenção de complicações clínicas. Objetivo: Comparar a intensidade de dor nas punções em lóbulo da orelha e polpa digital e a interferência do local de punção sobre os valores do exame de glicemia capilar. Método: Estudo exploratório, descritivo e quantitativo. Participaram 70 portadores de diabetes melito. A monitorização foi realizada ao acaso, com glicosímetro G-TECH Free 1®. Para avaliação da intensidade da dor, utilizou-se uma escala numérica graduada em 0 (ausente), 1 (muito leve), 2 (leve), 3 (moderada) e 4 (intensa). Resultados: Para os portadores de diabetes melito Tipo 1, a glicemia média foi de 274,38±22,64 mg/dL para lóbulo da orelha e de 298,33±4,58 mg/dL para polpa digital. Para DM Tipo 2, os valores foram 187,19±9,85 mg/dL para lóbulo da orelha e 195,41±10,47 mg/dL para polpa digital. Houve correlação entre as glicemias encontradas nos dois locais de punção. Para os portadores de diabetes melito Tipo 1, observou-se ausência de dor (0) em lóbulo da orelha e polpa digital com 1,86±0,12. Para portadores de diabetes melito Tipo 2, obteve-se que a média de intensidade de dor para lóbulo da orelha foi de 0,06±0,03 e para polpa digital, 1,75±0,09. Conclusão: Houve diferença estatística quanto ao índice glicêmico gerado pelos diferentes locais. Menor intensidade de dor foi observada quando o teste é realizado no lóbulo da orelha, sendo uma boa opção para o local de exame.

Introduction: The use of psychoactive substances by the student population has been the object of various studies in Brazil. Objective: To determine the prevalence of substance use among students. Methods: Quantitative study with a closed questionnaire based on standardized assessment instruments was developed. It consists of questions related to types of psychoactive substance use, abuse, frequency and duration of use, self-criticism regarding the use, consequences of use in relation to health, and misdemeanors committed under the influence of psychoactive substances. The sample included the participation of 268 students. A total of 183 (68.3%) questionnaires were analyzed, and only those with positive result for substance abuse at some point in life, the remainder, 85 (31%) questionnaires, had negative responses to psychoactive substances. Results: Students’ responses to the two years surveyed indicated that the first psychoactive substance used was alcohol (77.9%), followed by tobacco use (10.9%), and marijuana (7.6%). Of the students surveyed, 145 (79.2%) answered that still make use of psychoactive substances, and the current frequency of use varies from one or more times per week. When asked about the possibility of being or becoming drug addicts, 169 (92.3%) responded that they are not or will not become dependent. Conclusion: The results indicate the high rate of substance use among college students surveyed, and point to their contradiction to consider such psychoactive substances harmful to their health.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Open tibial fractures are usually caused by high-energy trauma. There is no consensus about the best treatment for these fractures. Biomechanical studies show that fixing on two planes approaches the rigidity of the bone, whereas the use of interlocking intramedullary nailing is widely used and reported to produce better therapeutic results in fracture healing. OBJECTIVE To compare bone tissue repair in patients with open diaphyseal tibial fracture treated with biplanar external fixation or reamed locked intramedullary nailing. METHOD Prospective randomised study with 68 patients undergoing two types of surgical treatment: biplanar external fixation or reamed locked intramedullary nailing. Consolidation, complications (infection, malunion and non-union) and quality of life using the SF-36 Health Survey were assessed 12 months after surgery. RESULTS Consolidation occurred in 84.6% of patients who underwent reamed intramedullary nailing, and in 90.3% of patients who were treated with biplanar external fixation. In the intramedullary nailing group, there were two cases of non-union, three cases of malunion and two cases of infection. In the patients treated with biplanar fixation, there were three cases of non-union, five cases of malunion and no cases of infection. There were no statistically significant differences between the treatment groups for these results. Patient quality of life was statistically equal for both methods. CONCLUSION Treatment with biplanar external fixation was associated with statistically similar results compared with intramedullary locking.

Abstract
Introduction: The literature has shown that musical stimulation can influence the cardiovascular system, however, the neurophysiological aspects of this influence are not yet fully elucidated. Objective: This study describes the influence of music on the neurophysiological mechanisms in the human body, specifically the variable blood pressure, as well as the neural mechanisms of music processing. Methods: Searches were conducted in Medline, PEDro, Lilacs and SciELO using the intersection of the keyword “music” with the keyword descriptors “blood pressure” and “neurophysiology”. Results: There were selected 11 articles, which indicated that music interferes in some aspects of physiological variables. Conclusion: Studies have indicated that music interferes on the control of blood pressure, heart and respiratory rate, through possible involvement of limbic brain areas which modulate hypothalamic-pituitary functions. Further studies are needed in order to identify the mechanisms by which this influence occurs.

Abstract
The literature indicates stress as a response of the organism to a stimulation that requires enormous efforts to adapt to the changes in the environment and the body. When an individual is subjected to stress, the autonomic nervous system is triggered, the sympathetic pathway is activated, and the parasympathetic system is suppressed, which exerts several effects on the cardiovascular system and affects heart rate variability. This research aimed to conduct a literature review to find and analyze the studies that address clearly the implications of stress on heart rate variability. The methodology employed was an active search in the databases SciELO, PubMed and Lilacs. The results were five articles, most of which suggest a relationship between stress and heart rate variability. We observed that the majority of the studies indicated a strong association between stress and cardiac autonomic activity. The stress is present in the daily activities of the population, especially in labor. The subject is vast, however, were observed in the references the effects of stress on the body making it vulnerable to diseases. Thus, this information may contribute to the aid of preventive strategies against stress and diseases of the cardiovascular system.

Abstract
Background Alopecia areata is the hair loss usually reversible, in sharply defined areas. The treatment of alopecia using growth factors shows interesting activity in promoting hair growth. In this concept, VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) is a marker of angiogenesis, stimulating hair growth by facilitating the supply of nutrients to the hair follicle, increasing follicular diameter. The aim of this study was the evaluation of a topical gel enriched with VEGF liposomes on the hair growth stimulation and its toxicological aspects. Methods Mesocricetus auratus were randomly divided into three groups. Control group was treated with Aristoflex® gel, 1% group with the same gel but added 1% VEGF and 3% group with 3% VEGF. Biochemical, hematological and histological analyses were done. Results At the end of the experiment (15th day of VEGF treatment) efficacy was determined macroscopically by hair density dermatoscopy analysis, and microscopically by hair diameter analysis. They both demonstrated that hair of the VEGF group increased faster and thicker than control. On the other hand, biochemical and hematological results had shown that VEGF was not 100% inert. Conclusions VEGF increased hair follicle area, but more studies are necessary to confirm its toxicity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to verify the association of risk behavior aggregation in different categories of physical activity (PA) with the presence of cardiovascular risk factors (RF) employees at a public university. METHOD We analyzed data of 376 employees, which were visited in their workplace for measurement of weight, height and questionnaires to identify the risk behaviors and risk factors. Chi-square test was used to analyze the association between the dependent and independent variables and binary logistic regression was used to construct a multivariate model for the observed associations. RESULTS Associations were found between the aggregation of following risk behaviors: smoking, alcohol consumption and physical inactivity, considered in different categories of PA, and the increase in RF, except for the presence of hypertriglyceridemia. Individuals with two or more risk behaviors in occupational PA category are more likely to be hypertensive (3.04 times) and diabetes (3.44 times). For the free time PA category, these individuals were 3.18 times more likely to have hypercholesterolemia and for locomotion PA, more likely to be hypertensive (2.42 times) and obese (2.51 times). CONCLUSION There are association between the aggregation of two or more risk behaviors and the presence of cardiovascular RF.

Abstract
INTRODUÇÃO: O sistema nervoso autônomo (SNA) pode ser investigado de forma não invasiva a partir da análise da variabilidade da frequência cardíaca (VFC) e sua utilização para avaliação do SNA tem contribuído com várias áreas da saúde, dentre elas, a fisioterapia. OBJETIVOS: Reunir estudos publicados em periódicos de circulação nacional da área que abordassem a utilização da VFC em fisioterapia, a fim de fornecer uma atualização dos achados para a área. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Foram selecionados, na lista de periódicos do WebQualis da área 21, todos os periódicos de circulação nacional que utilizam a palavra fisioterapia em seu título, com disponibilidade livre e textos completos em algum sítio da internet e que possuíssem classificação maior ou igual a B2. Com esses critérios, foram selecionados artigos das seguintes revistas: Revista Brasileira de Fisioterapia, Fisioterapia e Pesquisa e Fisioterapia em Movimento. Para essa busca, foram utilizados os descritores: "sistema nervoso autônomo", "sistema nervoso simpático", "fisioterapia" e "variabilidade da frequência cardíaca". RESULTADOS: A busca resultou em 19 artigos, sendo 17 ensaios clínicos e dois relatos de caso. CONCLUSÃO: A VFC tem sido utilizada no âmbito da fisioterapia como recurso para avaliação de intervenções fisioterapêuticas, como forma de investigação de condições patológicas comuns à prática clínica e para interpretação de condições fisiológicas. A sua utilização é feita principalmente pela especialidade de fisioterapia cardiorrespiratória.

Abstract
UNLABELLED BACKGROUND With prolonged physical activity, it is important to maintain adequate fluid balance. The impact of consuming isotonic drinks during and after exercise on the autonomic regulation of cardiac function is unclear. This study aimed to analyze the effects of consuming an isotonic drink on heart rate variability (HRV) during and after prolonged exercise. METHODS Thirty-one young males (21.55 ± 1.89 yr) performed three different protocols (48 h interval between each stage): I) maximal exercise test to determine the load for the protocols; II) Control protocol (CP) and; III). Experimental protocol (EP). The protocols consisted of 10 min at rest with the subject in the supine position, 90 min of treadmill exercise (60% of VO2 peak) and 60 min of rest placed in the dorsal decubitus position. No rehydration beverage consumption was allowed during CP. During EP, however, the subjects were given an isotonic solution (Gatorade, Brazil) containing carbohydrate (30 g), sodium (225 mg), chloride (210 mg) and potassium (60 mg) per 500 ml of the drink. For analysis of HRV data, time and frequency domain indices were investigated. HRV was recorded at rest (5-10 min), during exercise (25-30 min, 55-60 min and 85-90 min) and post-exercise (5-10 min, 15-20 min, 25-30 min, 40-45 min and 55-60 min). RESULTS Regardless of hydration, alterations in the SNS and PSNS were observed, revealing an increase in the former and a decrease in the latter. Hydrating with isotonic solution during recovery induced significant changes in cardiac autonomic modulation, promoting faster recovery of linear HRV indices. CONCLUSION Hydration with isotonic solution did not significantly influence HRV during exercise; however, after exercise it promoted faster recovery of linear indices.

Abstract
CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE Brazil is undergoing a period of epidemiological transition associated with demographic and nutritional changes. The prevalence of obesity is also increasing in children and is causing numerous health problems that are becoming public health issues. The aim here was to evaluate the prevalence of overweight among children of two and three years of age. DESIGN AND SETTING Cross-sectional study in municipal day care centers in Taubaté, state of São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS Weight and height measurements were made on 447 preschool children forming a probabilistic randomized sample. Their body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Their nutritional status was classified using the World Health Organization reference cutoff points (2006). Their mean weight, height and BMI were compared according to their age and sex. RESULTS The mean values for the final sample (n = 447) were as follows: mean age: 38.6 months (± 3.5) and Z scores for: weight/height (W/H): 0.50 (± 1.22); height/age: -0.03 (± 1.07); weight/age (W/A): 0.51 (± 1.23); and BMI: 0.51(± 1.23). The prevalence of overweight children (BMI > 1 z) was 28.86%, while the prevalence of underweight children (BMI < -2 z) was 0.89%. There were no differences in mean BMI among the two and three-year age groups (P = 0.66). CONCLUSION A high prevalence of overweight was observed in the sample of two and three-year-old children, with practically no malnutrition, thus showing that a significant nutritional transition may already be occurring, even in medium-sized cities of developing countries.

Abstract
In this study the baroreflex sensitivity of conscious, juvenile, spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) was compared. The study population consisted of 19 eight-week-old male SHRs. The baroreflex sensitivity was quantified as the derivative of the variation in heart rate (HR) and the variation of mean arterial pressure (baroreflex sensitivity = ΔHR/ΔMAP). MAP was manipulated with sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and phenylephrine (PHE), administered via an inserted cannula in the right femoral vein. The SHRs were divided into four groups: (1) low bradycardic baroreflex (LB) where the baroreflex gain (BG) was between 0 and -1 bpm/mmHg with PHE; (2) high bradycardic baroreflex (HB), where the BG was < -1 bpm/mmHg with PHE; (3) low tachycardic baroreflex (LT) where the BG was between 0 and 3 bpm/mmHg with SNP; (4) high tachycardic baroreflex (HT) where the BG was > 3 bpm/mmHg with SNP. We noted that 36.8% of the rats presented with an increased bradycardic reflex, while 27.8% demonstrated an attenuated tachycardic reflex. No significant alterations were noted regarding the basal MAP and HR. There were significant differences in the baroreflex sensitivity between SHRs in the same laboratory. One should be careful when interpreting studies employing the SHR as a research model.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Patients who undergo cardiac surgery are commonly treated with diuretic therapy for the management of volume overload. The concern of hypokalemia important in the adult population submitted to cardiac surgery has been described. Intravenous potassium (K+) replacement dilution is only recommended with sodium chloride 0.9% solution (SF0.9%), likely due to the putative effects of glucose solution 5% (SG5%) on insulin secretion, which influence K+ replacement quality. However, it is not yet experimentally proved the influence of SF0.9% and SG5% on K+ replacement quality. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effects of different vehicles of K+ replacement on blood K+ levels in furosemide hypokalemic rats. METHODS Male Wistar rats divided into four groups: K++SF, K++SG, SF and SG. Jugular vein was cannulation for K+ replacement and femoral vein was cannulated for blood analysis were performed. Furosemide (50mg/kg) was injected S.C. to induce hypokalemia. It was analyzed potassium plasmatic levels 24 hours before furosemide injection, 24 hours after furosemide injection and 30 minutes after post-replacement. RESULTS There was no significative difference in blood K+ levels when compared to the basal values (pre-furosemide) in all groups. However, the levels [K+] returned to baseline in both groups receiving K++SF or K++SG, which was not observed in groups receiving only SF and SG. Only K+SF presented increased after K+ replacement (P<0.05). CONCLUSION K+ replacement diluted both in SF and SG did not affect blood K+ levels in rats.
