Abstract
Myopic choroidal neovascularization (mCNV) is a severe complication of pathological myopia. Currently, the primary treatment involves anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy, which significantly improves visual acuity in mCNV patients. However, challenges such as high recurrence rates and inconsistent therapeutic outcomes persist. Previous studies attributed mCNV to choroidal thinning and ischemia. Recent research suggests that, in addition to choroidal factors, perforating scleral vessels (PSV) are closely associated with the occurrence and therapeutic efficacy of mCNV. This review comprehensively explores the definition of PSVs, their imaging classifications and features, as well as their intricate connections with the occurrence and clinical outcomes of mCNV. By delving into the role and potential mechanisms of PSVs in mCNV, this review aims to deepen our understanding of their involvement in this condition.

Abstract
Abnormally high follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) has been reported to associate with cardiovascular diseases in prostate cancer patients with specific androgen deprivation therapy and in menopausal women. All of the cardiovascular diseases were involved in atherosclerosis. However, the pathogenic mechanism of FSH-associated atherosclerosis remains uncertain. Apolipoprotein E-deficient mice were chosen to develop atherosclerosis, of which the plaques were analyzed with administration of short- and long-term FSH imitating androgen deprivation therapy-induced and menopausal FSH elevation. The study showed that short- and long-term exposure of FSH significantly accelerated atherosclerosis progression in apolipoprotein E-deficient mice, manifested as strikingly increased plaques in the aorta and its roots, increased macrophage content, reduced fibrin, and an enlarged necrotic core, suggesting a decrease in plaque stability. Furthermore, expression profiles from the Gene Expression Omnibus GSE21545 dataset revealed that macrophage inflammation was tightly associated with FSH-induced atherosclerotic progression. The human monocyte cell line THP-1 was induced by PMA and worked as a macrophage model to detect inflammatory factors and cellular functions. FSH remarkably promoted the expression of IL-1β in macrophages and strikingly increased the chemotactic migratory capacity of macrophages toward MCP-1, but the promigratory capacity of FSH was attenuated in foam cells. Overall, we revealed that FSH significantly promoted the inflammatory response and migration of macrophages, thereby provoking atherosclerosis development.

Abstract
Disturbed blood flow has been recognized to promote platelet aggregation and thrombosis via increasing accumulation of von Willebrand factor (VWF) at the arterial post-stenotic sites. The mechanism underlying the disturbed-flow regulated endothelial VWF production remains elusive. Here we described a mouse model, in which the left external carotid artery (LECA) is ligated to generate disturbed flow in the common carotid artery. Ligation of LECA increased VWF accumulation in the plasma. Carotid arterial thrombosis was induced by ferric chloride (FeCl3) application and the time to occlusion in the ligated vessels was reduced in comparison with the unligated vessels. In vitro, endothelial cells were subjected to oscillatory shear (OS, 0.5 ± 4 dynes/cm2) or pulsatile shear (PS, 12 ± 4 dynes/cm2). OS promoted VWF secretion as well as the cell conditioned media-induced platelet aggregation by regulating the intracellular localization of vesicle-associated membrane protein 3 (VAMP3) and synaptosomal-associated protein 23 (SNAP23). Disruption of vimentin intermediate filaments abolished the OS-induced translocation of SNAP23 to the cell membrane. Knockdown of VAMP3 and SNAP23 reduced the endothelial secretion of VWF. Systemic inhibition of VAMP3 and SNAP23 by treatment of mice with rapamycin significantly ameliorated the FeCl3-induced thrombogenesis, whereas intraluminal overexpression of VAMP3 and SNAP23 aggravated it. Our findings demonstrate VAMP3 and SNAP23 as potential targets for preventing the disturbed flow-accelerated thrombus formation.

Abstract
AIM To assess the fat content of the pancreas using quantitative computed tomography (QCT) and to correlate the results with chemical-shift-encoded magnetic resonance imaging (CSE-MRI) measurements of proton density fat fraction (PDFF). MATERIAL AND METHODS Institutional review board approval for this research was obtained and 52 participants (25 men, 27 women; mean age 35.1 years; age range 22-50 years), who were enrolled in the Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology (PURE) Study, underwent QCT and CSE-MRI for quantification of fat content in the pancreas. Two observers placed regions of interest (area of 100-130 mm2) in the head, body, and tail of the pancreas as closely matched as possible on the two scans. Pearson correlation and Bland-Altman analysis were performed to evaluate the correlation between the QCT and CSE-MRI measurements and the systematic difference between the two techniques. RESULTS The QCT and CSE-MRI measurements of pancreatic fat content were well correlated (r=0.805, p<0.0001), although Bland-Altman analysis showed that the QCT measurements were systematically lower by 6.3% compared to CSE-MRI PDFF. CONCLUSION In conclusion, the results of this study suggest good correlation between QCT and CSE-MRI measurements of pancreatic fat content. Further studies are required to improve the numerical agreement of QCT measurements with PDFF.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the neurobehavioral function(attention, executive skills, behavior) of school-aged with varying degrees of SDB and control children with no history of SDB recruited from the community.Method: One hundred and sixty-three children aged from 7 to 12 were enrolled in the study. Children were devided into 4 groups through the data of Routine overnight polysomnography(PSG): PS(n=71) group, mild OSAHS (n=29) group, moderate/severe OSAHS(n=21) group, and controls(n=42) group. The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function(BRIEF) and the Child Behavior Checklist(CBCL) were used to assess attention, executive function and behavioral function. Result: There was significant difference of AHI, OAI, RAI, SAI and SpO ₂ nadir between the mild/MS groups and the control/PS groups(F=1174.3, 1178.0, 2348.3, 34.7, 377.7, P<0.05). Total sleep time(TST) of the MS OSAHS group was significantly less than that in the control group(F=178.8, P<0.05). Increased rates of behavioral executive dysfunction were found depending on the SDB spectrum(F=181.2, 274.2, 284.5, P<0.05). Children with all severities of SDB had signicantly higher rates of total, internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems compared to control group(F=361.7, 168.3, 564.0, P<0.05). Conclusion:Our study suggests that behavioral, attention, and executive function difficulties are present in children with PS as well as OSAHS. These results have implications for the treatment of milder forms of SDB, particularly PS, which is commonly viewed as benign.

Abstract
The earliest atherosclerotic lesions preferentially develop in arterial regions experienced disturbed blood flow, which induces endothelial expression of pro-atherogenic genes and the subsequent endothelial dysfunction. Our previous study has demonstrated an up-regulation of DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1) and a global hypermethylation in vascular endothelium subjected to disturbed flow. Here, we determined that DNMT1-specific inhibition in arterial wall ameliorates the disturbed flow-induced atherosclerosis through, at least in part, targeting cell cycle regulator cyclin A and connective tissue growth factor (CTGF). We identified the signaling pathways mediating the flow-induction of DNMT1. Inhibition of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) suppressed the DNMT1 up-regulation both in vitro and in vivo. Together, our results demonstrate that disturbed flow influences endothelial function and induces atherosclerosis in an mTOR/DNMT1-dependent manner. The conclusions obtained from this study might facilitate further evaluation of the epigenetic regulation of endothelial function during the pathological development of atherosclerosis and offer novel prevention and therapeutic targets of this disease.

Abstract
Objective:To investigate the efficacy and safety of low-dose intratympanic gentamicin (ITG) compared with intratympanic dexamethasone (ITD) in patients with intractable Meniere's disease (MD). Method:Seventy patients affected by definite unilateral MD were enrolled. 1 ml of gentamicin sulfate(40 g/L) was buffered with 0.5 ml of sodium bicarbonate to obtain a 6.4 pH solution with 26.7 g/L concentration. Thirty-five patients were treated with the buffered gentamicin solution on every week for 2 times. Thirty-five patients were treated with ITD (5 mg) in the first two days, and then every week for 4 weeks. At 2-year follow-up, mean outcome measurements consisted of control of vertigo attacks, pure tone average (PTA), dizziness handicap inventory and tinnitus handicap inventory.Result:Among 34 cases with complete follow-up data in the ITG group, complete control of vertigo (class A) was achieved in 27 patients and substantial control of vertigo (class B) in 5 patients. Among 32 cases with complete follow-up data in the ITD group, class A and B were achieved in 13 and 6 patients respectively (P< 0.05). There were no statistically significant variations between the two groups in PTA and THI (t= 1.737 and t=-0.197, P> 0.05).Conclusion:Low-dose ITG achieves better outcome than ITD in the control of vertigo attacks in patients suffering from unilateral intractable MD, with a very low incidence of hearing deterioration.

Abstract
Objective:To predict the prognosis of acute lowtone sensorineural hearing loss(ALHL)by using the videonystagmography(VNG) and electrocochleography(ECochG).Method:A retrospective study was done in 70 patients with ALHL after long-term follow-up. The recurrence rate and rate of progression to definite Meniere 's disease were determined according to the results of VNG and ECochG tests at the onset of the first episode of hearing loss.Result:Twentynine patients(41.4%)experienced recurrent hearing loss and 5 patients(7.1%)developed to Meniere's disease. In patients with an elevated SP/AP ratio and spontaneous nystagmus, the recurrence rate was 81.8%. However, in those with a normal SP/AP ratio and without spontaneous nystagmus, the recurrence rate was 23.3%.There was a statistically significant difference in the progression rate of Meniere's disease between the groups with(15.2%) and without spontaneous nystagmus.Conclusion:It has a certain reference value to predict prognosiswhen spontaneous nystagmus and an elevated SP/AP ratio are detected on initial examination in patients with ALHL.

Abstract
Intermuscular bones, ossified from tendons within the myosepta, occur only in teleost fish. Current understanding of the homology and origins of intermuscular bones in fishes is based mainly on morphological data. To date, there is no published data regarding molecular mechanisms of intermuscular bone formation. In this study, we cloned the gene muscle segment homeobox C (MsxC). MsxC potentially plays a role in intermuscular bone development of Hemibarbus labeo, an important species of cyprinid fish in the Chinese aquaculture industry. Sequence analysis of MsxC revealed motifs characteristic of the homeobox domain family. Whole-mount in situ hybridization showed that MsxC was primarily expressed in the myosepta and brain. MsxC was expressed in the myosepta from 26 to 41 days after hatching (DAH); this coincided with the onset of intermuscular bone ossification, which occurred between 35 and 62 DAH. Evidence for localization of MsxC expression by in situ hybridization correlated with its detection by quantitative real-time PCR. In vertebrates, MsxC plays a role in the regulation of mesenchymal cell differentiation during bone formation. We therefore conclude that MsxC may have a role in epithelium-mesenchyme interactions during intermuscular bone formation in H. labeo.

Abstract
Single-nucleotide polymorphisms in microRNAs (miRNAs) may dramatically affect gene expression and subsequently alter individual susceptibility to cancer, and thus has become a research hotspot for many cancer types, including breast cancer. We recruited 321 breast cancer patients and 290 controls in our study. Four established miRNA single-nucleotide polymorphisms (mir-499 rs3746444 A>G; miR-27a rs895819 A>G; miR-196a2 rs11614913 T>C; miR-146a rs2910164 G/C) were detected using Taqman assays. Mature miRNA expression, allele distribution, and the association with clinical features were further analyzed. Our results showed that the miR146a rs2910164 G/C polymorphism was associated with an elevated risk of breast cancer (odds ratio = 1.85, 95% confidence interval = 1.03-3.32; P < 0.05). Compared with the ancestral T allele in miR-196a2 rs11614913, the variant C allele was consistently associated with an increased risk of breast cancer (odds ratio = 2.20, 95% confidence interval = 1.19-4.09, P < 0.01) and clinical pathological type (P < 0.01). miR-27a rs895819 A>G and miR-499 rs3746444 A>G were not associated with breast cancer risk. Analysis of mature miRNA expression confirmed that the variant C allele in miR146a rs2910164 and miR-196a2 rs11614913 dramatically inhibited production of their mature products. Our results suggested that miR-146a rs2910164 G>C and miR-196a2 rs11614913 T>C may be biomarkers for predicting breast cancer risk in the Chinese population.

Abstract
The (Fe,Co)-(Fe,Co)17Gd2 pseudo-binary eutectic system has been determined by investigating phase compositions on the analysis of DSC, EDS and XRD. The rapid solidification of Gd7.3Fe30.56Co62.14, Gd9Fe30Co61 and Gd9.63Fe29.79Co60.58 ternary alloys is realized by single roller techniques. With a rising cooling rate, the equiaxed zone near the roller surface expands inwards. For Gd7.3Fe30.56Co62.14 hypoeutectic alloy ribbons, the feathery irregular eutectic zone shrinks and the grains (Fe,Co) near the free surface are refined. (Fe,Co) equiaxed dendrites plus the radial, irregular eutectic ultimately fill in the ribbon at the maximum cooling rate. For Gd9Fe30Co61 near-eutectic alloy ribbons, the growth direction of irregular eutectics near the free surface becomes more and more perpendicular to the surface, and finally the whole ribbons are occupied by the fine, irregular eutectic. The dendritic spacing of the (Fe,Co)17Gd2 phase which grows from the roller surface to the free surface in Gd9.63Fe29.79Co60.58 alloy ribbons becomes smaller. The grain size of the (Fe,Co)17Gd2 dendrite and the fraction of (Fe,Co) soft phase in alloy ribbons, which determine coercivity in the pseudo-binary eutectic system, vary with the increase of the cooling rate. Of the three alloys, the Gd9Fe30Co61 alloy has the best hard magnetic properties at Vr = 20 m/s; the maximum coercivity Hc is 431.34 Oe.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Serotonin may play an important role in the pathology of major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the relationship between serotonin transporter (SERT) availability and the medical outcome of antidepressant treatment is uncertain. METHODS In this naturalistic study, SERT availability (expressed as the specific uptake ratio, SUR) in the midbrain of 17 drug-free patients with MDD and 17 controls matched for age and gender was measured using SPECT with [(123)I]ADAM. The severity of MDD was measured by the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale before, and after 6 weeks of non-standardized antidepressant treatment. RESULTS A total of 12 patients completed the study. The SUR of the patients with MDD was significantly lower than that of the healthy controls. The SUR of SERT was not found to have a linear relationship with the treatment outcome; however, supplemental analysis found a curvilinear relationship between treatment outcome and the SUR of SERT. DISCUSSION The findings indicate that the SUR of SERT is lower in patients with MDD; however it did not predict treatment outcome in a linear fashion. Studies with larger sample sizes are required.

Abstract
There have been few reports evaluating the expression and function of the microRNA miR-212 in esophageal cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between miR-212 expression and clinicopathological factors and prognoses of esophageal cancer. MicroRNA was extracted from 46 esophageal cancer patients using the Taqman MicroRNA assay. All patients were at the same tumor node metastasis stage, but with different prognoses, and had all undergone surgery. The correlation between miR-212 expression and clinicopathological features was analyzed and the significance of miR-212 as a prognostic factor as well as its relationship with survival was determined. miR-212 expression was higher in patients with poor prognoses than in those with good prognoses (P < 0.0001). Kaplan-Meier analysis results showed that the miR-212 expression level was significantly correlated with survival time (P = 0.024). Patients with higher expression of miR-212 showed longer survival times. Cox multi-factor model analysis showed that miR-212 expression was significantly correlated with survival time (P = 0.026). mir-212 is related with prognostic factors and survival time and may be a biomarker for esophageal cancer.

Abstract
Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a pleiotropic immunoregulator which has a unique structure and a chemokine-like function. Since it was dicovered in 1966, the functions of MIF have been indicated, such as non-specific immunity, the inflammatory cell recruitment, and inflammatory reaction. In addition to its eponymic activity, MIF also has a proinflammatory function and promotes the directed migration and recruitment of leukocytes into infectious and inflammatory sites; it also has functions such as anti-glucocorticoids, anti-apoptosis , and promoting the release of other cytokines. As a result, MIF plays an important role in atherosclerosis, autoimmune diseases, cancer, and metabolic diseases. In this review, we will discuss the molecular pathway, function, related diseases and clinical application of MIF.

Abstract
PURPOSE Serotonin transporter (SERT) and dopamine transporter (DAT) levels differ in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) who are in a depressed state in comparison with healthy controls. In addition, a family history of depression is a potent risk factor for developing depression, and inherited vulnerability to serotonergic and dopaminergic dysfunction is suspected in this. The aim of this study was to examine the availabilities of midbrain SERT and striatal DAT in healthy subjects with and without a first-degree family history of MDD. METHODS Eight healthy subjects with first-degree relatives with MDD and 16 sex- and age-matched healthy controls were recruited. The availabilities of SERT and DAT were approximated using SPECT, employing [¹²³I] 2-((2-((dimethylamino) methyl) phenyl)thio)-5-iodophenylamine (ADAM) and [(⁹⁹m)Tc] TRODAT-1 as the ligands, respectively. There are missing data for one participant with a first-degree family history of MDD from the ADAM study, due to a lack of the radio-ligand at the time of experiment. RESULTS SERT availability in the midbrain was significantly lower in subjects with a first-degree family history of MDD than in healthy subjects. However, DAT availability was no different between two groups. CONCLUSIONS The results with regard to the midbrain SERT level suggest the heritability of MDD.

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to develop a patient-specific dose estimation system in nuclear medicine examination. A dose deposition routine to store the deposited energy of the photons during their flights was embedded in the widely used SimSET Monte Carlo code and a user-friendly interface for reading PET and CT images was developed. Dose calculated on ORNL phantom was used to validate the accuracy of this system. The ratios of S value for (99m)Tc, (18)F and (131)I computed by this system to those obtained with OLINDA for various organs were ranged from 0.93 to 1.18, which were comparable to that obtained from MCNPX2.6 code (0.88-1.22). Our system developed provides opportunity for tumor dose estimation which cannot be known from the MIRD. The radiation dose can provide useful information in the amount of radioisotopes to be administered in radioimmunotherapy.

The migration of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) from media to intima is a critical step in the formation of atheroma and vascular stenosis as well as in the restenosis after vascular intervention. As an important downstream effector of RhoA, Rho-associated kinase (ROCK) plays an important role in VSMC migration and vascular remodeling by regulating actin filament cytoskeleton and focal adhesion. There are many bioactive substances such as aldosterone, sphingosine 1 phosphate (S1P), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and angiotensin II (Ang II) that could induce VSMC migration through Rho/ROCK pathway by binding to their specific receptors. Studies on Rho/ROCK pathway could help us to better understand how cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis and hypertension develop.

Abstract
Erythrocyte tropomodulin (E-Tmod) is first isolated from human erythrocyte membrane as a TM-binding protein. Its N-terminus contains two TM-binding sites and one TM-dependent actin capping domain and C-terminus contains 5 leucine-rich repeats and a TM-independent actin capping domain. As the unique capping protein at the slow-growing end of F-actin, E-Tmod binds to N-terminus of TM and actin and decreases the TM-coated F-actin depolymerization. E-Tmod encoding gene is highly conserved and E-Tmod is distributed widely in erythrocytes and cardiomyocytes, etc. E-Tmod plays a pivotal role in organizing F-actin and cytoskeleton and maintaining the mechanical properties of the cells.

Abstract
The cDNA and genomic sequences of IgD and IgZ were characterized in grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella in the present study, and with the identification of a BAC clone covering zeta, mu, and delta genes, the IgH locus containing these Ig genes and other V, D, J genes was also illustrated in this fish. Secretory and membrane-bound IgZ were identified, with two transmembrane exons spliced within the CH4 exon, as reported in IgM of mammals and IgZ in other teleost fish. The first and second constant domains of IgZ shows more than 90% nucleotide identity with respective domains of grass carp IgM. The IgD has a structure of delta1-(delta2-delta3-delta4)(2)-delta5-delta6-delta7-TM-UTR, with the repeat of delta2-delta3-delta4; but intron was not found between the two repeat, i.e. between the first delta2-delta3-delta4 (delta2.1-delta3.1-delta4.1) and the second delta2-delta3-delta4 (delta2.2-delta3.2-delta4.2), and the intron between delta3.1 and delta4.1 was much shorter than the intron between delta3.2 and delta4.2. The genomic organization of the IgH locus has a pattern of Vn-Dn-Jn-Czeta-Dn-Jn-Cmu-Cdelta, as reported in other teleost fish. Thirteen V(H), fourteen D, and twelve J(H) genes were observed in this locus, with the similarity of three D segments and four J(H) segments being the same in the upstream of Czeta and Cmu. The transcriptional enhancer located at the mu-delta intergenic region was also analyzed and it seems possible that this enhancer is functional as verified in zebrafish and channel catfish.

Abstract
AIM OF THE STUDY Gekko swinhonis Guenther has been used as an anti-cancer drug in traditional Chinese medicine for hundreds of years. Here we investigated the structural characterization and anti-cancer effects of sulfated polysaccharide-protein complex (GSPP) isolated from Gekko swinhonis Guenther. MATERIALS AND METHODS The structure of GSPP was characterized by high performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, beta-elimination reaction, and NMR spectroscopy. SMMC-7721 cells were used to assess the influence of GSPP on hepatocellular carcinoma. Cell proliferation and survival was determined by trypan blue exclusion assay. Cell migration was performed by wound-healing and transwell assay. The secretion of IL-8 was detected by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. Flow cytometry was used to analyze intracellular calcium concentration, as well as cell cycle distribution and apoptosis. Confocal microscopy was used to assess the localization and configuration of actin filaments. RESULTS GSPP was chemically characterized as a sulfated polysaccharide-protein complex with O-glycopeptide linkages. Our results showed that GSPP inhibited the proliferation of SMMC-7721 cells and blocked cells in the S phase. No direct toxicity against cells was observed. Furthermore, GSPP inhibited the migration of SMMC-7721 cells with the reduction of intracellular calcium. Actin filaments were polymerized and accumulated in the cytoplasm of the treated cells, whereas the secretion of IL-8 was not significantly changed after GSPP exposure. CONCLUSION We describe an identified sulfated polysaccharide-protein complex, and demonstrate its direct effect on hepatocellular carcinoma cell migration via calcium-mediated regulation of the actin cytoskeleton reorganization.

Abstract
There is evidence that hyperlipidemia can induce hemorheological and microcirculatory disturbances. Myakuryu, a Chinese traditional medicine is efficacious in promoting lipid metabolism and protecting oxidative stress, but whether this drug can ameliorate rheologic disturbances caused by hyperlipidemia is still unknown. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of myakuryu on hemorheological and microcirculatory disturbances induced by hyperlipidemia. Wistar rats were divided into a group on control diet (n=8) and a group on high-fat diet (HFD, n=44). Eight weeks later, plasma triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) were determined. Sixteen animals with the highest levels of hyperlipidemia from the HFD group were randomly divided into two sub-groups: the untreated hyperlipidemia group (n=8) and the group treated with myakuryu (n=8). At the end of the sixteenth week, rheological and microcirculatory parameters were measured. Chemical analysis showed that myakuryu treatment caused significant reductions of plasma TG and TC levels (P<0.01), and the cholesterol/phospholipid ratio in the erythrocyte membrane (P<0.05). Rheological and microcirculatory measurements showed that myakuryu treatment led to a significant decrease in the erythrocyte aggregation index, plasma viscosity and blood viscosity at shear rates of 50, 100 and 150 s(-1) and in adherent leukocytes in mesenteric venules. There was a significant increase in erythrocyte deformation, electrophoretic mobility, membrane fluidity and F-actin content in the erythrocyte membrane as well as in red cell velocity in mesenteric venules. Our findings suggest that myakuryu treatment can improve blood flow and reduce adherent leukocytes in the venules of rats fed with HFD by ameliorating blood viscosity, erythrocyte deformability and aggregation, and other hemorheological characteristics.

Abstract
The phylogenetic relationships among the Ergasilidae genera are poorly understood. In this study, 14 species from four genera in the Ergasilidae including Sinergasilus, Ergasilus, Pseudergasilus, and Paraergasilus were collected in China, and their phylogenetic relationships were examined using neighbor-joining, maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference methods based on partial sequences of 18S and 28S ribosomal deoxyribonucleic acid, respectively. All the analyses suggest that the Sinergasilus and Paraergasilus are both monophyletic, but the Ergasilus is polyphyletic rather than monophyletic. Considering the relationships among the four genera, the phylogenetic analyses and subsequent hypothesis tests all suggest that Pseudergasilus clustered with some Ergasilus species may have a closer relationship with Sinergasilus rather than with Paraergasilus. It is proposed that the Sinergasilus and the Pseudergasilus species might have evolved from Ergasilus species.

Abstract
The genes of IRF-1 and IRF-7 have been cloned from the mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi). The IRF-1 gene has 4919 nucleotides (nt) and contains 10 exons and 9 introns, with an open reading frame (ORF) of 903nt encoding 301aa. The IRF-7 gene has 6057nt and also contains 10 exons and 9 introns, with an ORF of 1308nt encoding 436aa. The IRF-1 and IRF-7 genes have only one copy each in the genome. The transcription of IRF-1 and IRF-7 in different organs was analyzed by real-time PCR, and both molecules were constitutively expressed. The IRF-1 and IRF-7 mRNAs were abundant in gill, spleen, kidney and pronephros. The temporal transcriptional changes for IRF-1, IRF-7 and Mx were investigated within 48h after poly I: C stimulation in liver, gill, spleen and pronephros. An increased transcription was detected for IRF-1 and IRF-7 12h post-stimulation, being earlier than the transcription of Mx protein; however, IRF-1 and IRF-7 transcription decreased while the Mx protein was stable at 48h post-stimulation.

Abstract
The phylogenetic relationship of 5 genera, i.e. Diplozoon Nordmann, 1832, Paradiplozoon Achmerov, 1974, Inustiatus Khotenovsky, 1978, Sindiplozoon Khotenovsky, 1981, and Eudiplozoon Khotenovsky, 1985 in the subfamily Diplozoinae Palombi, 1949 (Monogenea, Polyopisthocotylea) was inferred from rDNA ITS-2 region using neighbour-joining (NJ), maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian methods. The phylogenetic trees produced by using NJ, ML and Bayesian methods exhibit essentially the same topology. Surprisingly, freshwater species of Paradiplozoon from Europe clustered together with species of Diplozoon, but separated from Chinese Paradiplozoon species. The results of molecular phylogeny and lower level of divergence (4.1-15.7%) in ITS-2 rDNA among Paradiplozoon from Europe and Diplozoon and, on the other hand, high level of divergence (45.3-53.7%) among Paradiplozoon species from Europe and China might indicate the non-monophyletic origin of the genus Paradiplozoon. Also, the generic status of European Paradiplozoon needs to be revised. The species of Paradiplozoon in China is a basal group in Diplozoinae as revealed by NJ and Bayesian methods, and Sindiplozoon appears to be closely related to European Paradiplozoon and Diplozoon with their relationship to Eudiplozoon and Inustiatus being unresolved.

Abstract
The chondroitin AC lyase gene, cslA, was cloned for the first time from the fish bacterial pathogen F. columnare G4. From the first transcription initiation site, the cslA extends 2620 nucleotides to the end of the 3' region. The open reading frame of cslA transcript has 2286 nucleotides encoding 762 amino acids with a 16 residues long signal peptide at the N-terminus. The gene, cslA was then successfully expressed in Escherichia coli and recombinant chondroitin AC lyase, rChonAC was purified, with its lytic activity analyzed. Zymography analysis copolymerized with chondroitin sulphate revealed the lytic activity of rChonAC and also the crude native ChonAC isolated from periplamic space of cultured F. columnare G4. The low level of lytic activity observed in crude native ChonAC may be due possibly to the low level of expression of this gene in the cultured condition. The expression and the role of this virulence factor is of interest for further research on the pathogenesis of F. columnare.

Abstract
A tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 2 binding protein (T2BP) gene was isolated from the grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus) by utilizing suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). The grass carp T2BP (GT2BP) gene contains an open reading frame of 579 nucleotide(s) (nt), encoding 193 amino acids, with 23 nt 5'-untranslated region and a long 3'-untranslated region of 434 nt including poly (A), 1 AUUUA motif and 4 AUUUUA motifs. No signal peptide has been detected in the predicted GT2BP, but a characteristic forkhead associated domain is present. The GT2BP mRNA shares 83% identity with the zebrafish DNA sequence, and they both have no introns in the genomic DNA. The putative transcription factor binding sites of GT2BP include two C/EBP alpha binding sites, and one c-Jun binding, one AP-1 binding, and one nuclear factor kappaB (NF kappaB) binding sites. Southern blot analysis revealed that the GT2BP was a single-copy gene. Individual difference was observed in GT2BP expression in examined organs of healthy grass carp. However, the expression of GT2BP in all examined organs in a fish with the highest copepod infection level and the significantly higher expression level in spleen and liver in infected fish may indicate its up-regulation with the parasite infection.

Abstract
Differential gene expression of mature and immature Bothriocephalus acheilognathi cestodes was analyzed using the suppression subtractive hybridization technique. Five mature-associated cDNAs were isolated and characterized. Virtual Northern blot and RT-PCR analyses confirmed that four of the five genes were upregulated in mature parasites. The sequence analysis revealed that one gene encoded the structural protein chorion precursor, and the three encoded functional proteins homologous to yolk ferritin, sodium/hydrogen exchanger and muscin-like protein. Another gene appeared to be specific to B. acheilognathi, encoding a putative metal-bound protein. Although results obtained in the present study are preliminary, the information about the five genes may provide clues for further investigation on the decline in parasite numbers during the maturation of B. acheilognathi.

Abstract
Two species of aspidogastreans, namely Aspidogaster ijimai and A. conchicola, were studied by scanning electron microscopy. In nine lakes and an old river course, the Tian'ezhou oxbow, investigated in the flood plain of the Yangtze River, A. ijimai was obtained from the common carp ( Cyprinus carpio) in three lakes, and A. conchicola from the black carp Mylopharyngodon piceus in three lakes and the oxbow. In none of the localities, however, were the two species found together. It is suggested that A. ijimai may be considered as a specialist parasite for the common carp, at least in the flood-plain lakes of the Yangtze River. The two parasites were similar in many aspects of their morphology. Their bodies can both be separated into a dorsal part and a ventral disc, with the body surface of the dorsal part elevated by transverse folds, and the disc subdivided into alveoli by transverse and longitudinal septa, although the number of alveoli was different in the two species. The depression on the ventral surface of the neck region was prominent for both species, and their ventral disc was covered densely with non-ciliated bulbous papillae. The position of mouth, osmo-regulatory pore and marginal organ was also similar for A. ijimai and A. conchicola. However, microridges in the trough of the folds in the neck region and numerous small pits on the upper part of the septa were found exclusively in A. ijimai, but uniciliated sensory papillae in A. conchicola.

Abstract
p16 gene was transferred into human erythroleukemia cell line K562 that had been subjected to p16 deletion. The changes of biophysical behavior of K562 cells after gene transfer were studied with the micropipette technique. The micropipette data were analyzed with a standard solid viscoelastic model. In comparison to untransfected control K562 cells and the cells transfected with an empty vector, the p16-transfected K562 cells showed an increase in the elastic element K(1), which is inversely proportional to the maximum deformation over a long period of time, whereas the viscous element mu and the other elastic element K(2) showed no significant difference. The results indicate that K562 cells became more rigid after p16 transfer. The p16-transfected K562 cells also had a higher surface charge density. This study contributes to our knowledge about the suppression effect of p16 gene on tumor cell migration and about its use in gene therapy.

Abstract
The genetic structure of populations of the fish cestode, Bothriocephalus acheilognathi collected from Bailianhe Reservoir (BLH), Changshou (CSH) and Liangzi (LZH) Lakes was investigated by using 8 microsatellite loci. A total of 108 adult worms were genotyped at each of the 8 loci. For the 3 populations, the mean number of alleles per locus ranged from 2.38 to 5.5, and the mean expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.432 to 0.559. The average polymorphic information content (PIC) was from 0.384 to 0.492. The significant Fis values indicated non-random mating within LZH and BLH populations. On the other hand, when samples were further classified into subpopulations at the level of host fish species, no or little heterozygote deficiency was detected at most loci, showing that cross-fertilization, predominantly, but not exclusively, must have occurred within the subpopulations. Microsatellite markers also revealed an unexpected high level of genetic differentiation, as measured by R(st) and N(m) values or by delta(u)2 genetic distance among subpopulations from different hosts. Factors influencing the population genetic structure and the parasite host specificity are discussed.

Abstract
The genus Digramma (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidea) described by Cholodkovsky in 1915 differs from the genus Ligula only by the number of the reproductive organs per proglottis. However, the occurrence of transitional forms in Digramma raises much confusion concerning its generic validity. In the present study, cestodes previously designated as Digramma and Ligula were collected from lakes in the lower and middle reaches of the Yangtze River, and also from Qinghai Lake on Qingzang plateau, China. The entire internal transcribed spacer of the ribosomal DNA (ITS rDNA) and 5' end of 28S rDNA were compared between the Digramma and Ligula specimens. The low level of nucleotide variation between the two genera may imply that cestodes in the genus Digramma are paraphyletic to the Ligula genus, and Digramma is a synonym of Ligula. However, whether previously identified Digramma cestodes represent different species in the genus Ligula requires further investigation.

Abstract
The molecular variation in Bothriocephalus acheilognathi Yamaguti, 1934 from 11 species of freshwater fish collected in Australia, China, the Czech Republic, England and Hawaii was investigated by determining the nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacer region. The length of the first and second internal transcribed spacer sequences of multiple individuals ranged from 553 to 571 bp and 553 to 615 bp, and the G + C content from 53.1 to 53.5%. The percentage sequence divergence varied between 0 and 0.9% in the ITS1 and 0 and 6.6% in the ITS2, respectively, indicating the occurrence of intraspecific variation. It is demonstrated that the fragment length variation resulted primarily from microsatellite polymorphisms present in the ITS region, especially in the ITS2 region. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that B. acheilognathi examined in this study consisted of three closely related genotypes with certain degrees of host-specificity, and the genotype representing isolates from Cyprinus carpio L. was the most common and diverse form within the species B. acheilognathi.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Recently, tissue polypeptide specific antigen (TPS) has been introduced as a cell proliferation marker. Little is known about its clinical significance in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study aimed to clarify serum TPS levels and tumor invasiveness of HCC. METHODS Serum TPS levels were determined with a monoclonal TPS IRMA assay in 69 patients with HCC. A correlation between serum TPS levels and clinical, biochemical, and pathological features was sought and compared with that of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). In 57 healthy subjects, 56 patients with biopsy-proven chronic hepatitis and in 49 patients with liver cirrhosis, serum TPS levels were assayed and compared. RESULTS Serum TPS levels were significantly correlated with glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (p < 0.0001), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (p < 0.001), and lactate dehydrogenase (p = 0.027). There tended to be a positive relationship between serum TPS levels and tumor size, histological differentiation, capsular invasion, portal invasion, and clinical staging, although it did not reach statistical significance. A significant correlation, however, was observed between AFP and tumor size (p = 0.01), number (p = 0.042), histological grading (p = 0.028), portal invasion (p = 0.009), and clinical staging (p = 0.03). Patients with HCC had significantly higher TPS than healthy subjects (p < 0.001). However, there was substantial overlap between patients with HCC, chronic hepatitis, and liver cirrhosis. CONCLUSIONS Our data suggest that serum TPS is not significantly related to tumor invasiveness in patients with HCC. Serum TPS levels are affected by the proliferative activity of the underlying chronic liver disease, which is frequently associated with HCC in Chinese patients. As a cell proliferation marker, serum TPS should be interpreted cautiously in the presence of chronic liver disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between sexual differences of body fat distribution and cardiovascular dysmetabolic factors in old people is controversial. OBJECTIVES To use centrality index-derived body fat distribution to clarify its relationship with glucose tolerance status, blood pressure and lipid profile. DESIGN Cross-sectional survey in a tertiary-care medical centre in Tainan, Taiwan. SUBJECTS 114 men and 101 women, aged > or = 60 years. METHODS We measured total % body fat and body fat distribution (reflected as centrality index) by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry, and plasma glucose, glycosylated haemoglobin, blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and atherogenic index (total cholesterol/HDL cholesterol). RESULTS Centrality index showed better linear correlation with cardiovascular dysmetabolic factors than body mass index, total % body fat and waist-to-hip ratio, except in systolic blood pressure. Women had higher total % body fat, but the % abdominal fat and centrality index were both higher in men. Subjects with diabetes mellitus had the highest centrality index compared with those with impaired or normal glucose tolerance. After adjustment for age and total % body fat, men still had higher diastolic blood pressure, triglyceride levels and atherogenic indices, but lower HDL cholesterol levels than women. However, when further adjusted for centrality index, the sex differences in cardiovascular dysmetabolic factors were statistically insignificant. CONCLUSIONS Centrality index is a useful method for assessing body fat distribution in older people. Body fat distribution is an important factor in sex differences of cardiovascular dysmetabolic factors in old people.

Abstract
To investigate the pattern of age-related and sex-dependent bone mineral density (BMD) changes in the six skeletal regions in healthy Chinese, total-body and regional BMD were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in 310 women and 387 men aged 20-80 years. In women, a five-phase change was discernible in the axial bones: (1) gradual bone increase from 20-29 years old to maximal BMD at 35-39 years old; (2) maintenance of this level from 35-39 to 40-44; (3) a mild bone decrease from 40-44 to 45-49; (4) a rapid bone decrease from 45-49 to 55-59; and (5) a decelerated bone decrease after 55-59 years old. After validation of menopause status, the decrease of BMD in the late 40s became insignificant in premenopausal women. In appendicular bones, no obvious peak was observed, and significant bone decrease started at 50-54 years old. The overall bone decrease from 35-39 to 70-80 years old was 19.3% for the total body, 16.4% for the head, 29% for the spine, 23% for the pelvis, 18.2% for the ribs, 23.9% for the arms, and 20.4% for the legs. In men, the maximal bone mass was attained at 30-34 and 35-39 years old for axial and appendicular bones, respectively. The age-related bone decrease in the skeletal regions was small, except from 60-64 to 65-69 years old. The overall bone decrease in each region from maximal bone mass to 70-80 years old was 6.7% for the total body, 1.7% for the head, 7.6% for the spine, 11.3% for the pelvis, 9.5% for the ribs, 7.8% for the arms, and 10.4% for the legs. The overall magnitude of reduction in total-body BMD in women was about three times greater than that in men. The pattern of BMD changes differs in each region and is age-related as well as sex-dependent. There appeared to be no significant premenopausal bone decrease.

Abstract
The seasonal population dynamics of metacercariae of the bucephalid Dollfustrema vaneyi (Tseng, 1930) Echmann, 1934 in the bullhead catfish Pseudobagrus fulvidraco (Richardson) were investigated in Jiangkou reservoir, Jiangxi Province, east China, during the period from April 1990 to August 1991. In total, 523 fish were obtained, and the overall prevalence of the metacercariae was 89.87% and mean abundance 136.25 +/- 308.09 (mean +/- SD). A pattern of seasonal changes in prevalence and mean abundance was observed, with higher levels of metacercariae infection in late spring and summer. An analysis of the distribution of D. vaneyi in different organs of P. fulvidraco suggested that the eyes might be a suitable location for the parasite. Furthermore, the possible role of metacercariae in bullhead catfish was discussed in relation to the life cycle of this parasite.

Abstract
Several types of naturally occurring pre-S mutants in sera or liver tissues in patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection have been identified. To clarify the prevalence and significance of emergence of pre-S mutants, 140 sera and 18 resected livers from patients with HBV were studied. Replicative status was designated as high, intermediate, and low based on the HBV-DNA levels in serum or the expression of HBV antigens in liver. In vitro transfection and Western blot analysis were performed to characterize expression and secretion of HBsAg by the mutant constructs. Five major types (I to V) of pre-S deletion mutants in serum and liver and 2 types (VI and VII) in liver were identified. Pre-S mutant was 6.4% at high replicative phase, 13% at intermediate, and 37.5% at low or nonreplicative phases in serum. In livers, the same tendency existed: pre-S2 deletion mutants emerged and prevailed at a low replicative phase in hepatocytes that expressed a novel marginal pattern of HBsAg and usually clustered in groups. The deletion sequence of pre-S2 region coincides with human leukocyte antigen-restricted T- and B-cell epitopes. In vitro HBsAg was retained in the hepatocytes and synthesis and secretion of major surface antigen decreased for most of the pre-S mutants. Pre-S mutants prevailed with evolution of chronic HBV, probably under immune pressure. Emergence of pre-S mutants may account for the life-long persistence and discrepancy of HBsAg in serum and liver in HBV and may confer growth advantage in view of the clustering proliferation of hepatocytes harboring pre-S2 mutant.

Abstract
The central nervous system octapeptide, neuropeptide FF (NPFF), is believed to play a role in pain modulation and opiate tolerance. Two G protein-coupled receptors, NPFF1 and NPFF2, were isolated from human and rat central nervous system tissues. NPFF specifically bound to NPFF1 (K(d) = 1.13 nm) and NPFF2 (K(d) = 0.37 nm), and both receptors were activated by NPFF in a variety of heterologous expression systems. The localization of mRNA and binding sites of these receptors in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, the lateral hypothalamus, the spinal trigeminal nuclei, and the thalamic nuclei supports a role for NPFF in pain modulation. Among the receptors with the highest amino acid sequence homology to NPFF1 and NPFF2 are members of the orexin, NPY, and cholecystokinin families, which have been implicated in feeding. These similarities together with the finding that BIBP3226, an anorexigenic Y1 receptor ligand, also binds to NPFF1 suggest a potential role for NPFF1 in feeding. The identification of NPFF1 and NPFF2 will help delineate their roles in these and other physiological functions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the inter-relationships of age- and menopause- related changes of general obesity and body fat distribution and their independent effects on cardiovascular risk factors. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SUBJECTS One-hundred and thirty-six premenopausal and 193 postmenopausal Chinese women with body mass index (BMI) < 30 kg/m2. MEASUREMENTS Anthropometric surrogates of general obesity (BMI, total body fat percentage) and central obesity (waist-to-hip ratio, centrality index) were measured. Blood pressure, 75 g oral glucose tolerance test, glycosylated hemoglobin A1c and lipid profiles were also measured. RESULTS Significant correlation coefficients between age, general obesity, central obesity and cardiovascular disease risk factors were noted. Through the menopausal transition, the BMI and total body fat percentage were increased significantly. After adjustments for age and BMI, the postmenopausal women showed higher android fat percentage, centrality index, glycosylated hemoglobin A1c, serum concentrations of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and atherogenic indices than the premenopausal women. In multiple stepwise regression models, age exerted independent effects on oral glucose tolerance test 2 h plasma glucose level, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol level, and LDL cholesterol. Menopause was an independent variable in relation to the changes of glycosylated hemoglobin A1c, total and LDL cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels and atherogenic indices. The centrality index was the major independent variable of all the cardiovascular disease risk factors, except total and LDL cholesterol level. However, the variation of total body fat percentage had no independent effect on any cardiovascular disease risk factors. CONCLUSION Through the aging and menopausal effects, women will increase total body fat content, favoring the central body fat distribution. Age, menopause and central obesity were all independent and significant factors to the cardiovascular disease risk factors in Chinese women.

Abstract
Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) offers several advantages over hemodialysis for patients with end-stage renal disease; however, this technique also includes many documented complications. A case with clinical suspicion of dialysate leakage on CAPD was investigated by peritoneal scintigraphy using technetium-99m macroaggregated human albumin (99mTc-MAA). Peritoneal scintigraphy showed radiotracer accumulation over the periumbilical area at 2 hours 30 minutes after intraperitoneal infusion of 99mTc-MAA. Six hours of imaging revealed more apparent radioactivity at the same site. This study is to illustrate the simple diagnostic helpfulness of peritoneal scintigraphy in a patient with a CAPD-related structural defect.

Abstract
Cyprinid fish, Hemiculter leucisculus, Cultrichthys erythropterus and Culter dabryi, were sampled from Liangzi, Honghu and Tangxun lakes in the flood plain of the Yangtze River. The cestode Bothriocephalus acheilognathi Yamaguti, 1934 was found in the 3 lakes, but C. erythropterus sampled from Liangzi lake was found uninfected due probably to the small sample size. Findings of the cestode in the 3 lakes represent the first record of the parasite in the flood plain of the Yangtze River, indicating that B. acheilognathi may be distributed much wider in China than previously recognized.

Abstract
AIM The accuracy of bone scintigraphy in diagnosing symptomatic accessory navicular bones has not been well studied. We conducted a retrospective study to explore the results and use of scintigraphy in symptomatic and asymptomatic accessory navicular bones. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirteen patients with a total of 13 symptomatic and 10 asymptomatic accessory navicular bones were included in the study. We used a scoring system to grade the scintigraphic abnormalities. The patients' symptoms and scintigraphic findings were recorded. RESULTS Though focally increased radiopharmaceutical uptake was observed in all symptomatic accessory naviculars, half of the asymptomatic accessory navicular bones had the same manifestations. The scoring system was of no value in differentiating symptomatic from asymptomatic accessory navicular bones. CONCLUSION Bone scintigraphy is a sensitive but not a specific tool for diagnosing a symptomatic accessory navicular.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether measuring body fat distribution by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) can be used to discriminate glucose tolerance status. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Using a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test, a total of 1,015 Chinese subjects (559 men and 456 women) were categorized as having normal glucose tolerance (NGT), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), or diabetes. Blood pressure and lipid profiles of these subjects were measured. Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and DEXA were used to evaluate the varying patterns of body fat distribution among the groups. RESULTS Body fat distribution, as reflected by WHR and the centrality index, showed significant partial correlation coefficients with glycosylated hemoglobin, blood pressure, and lipid profiles in all subjects. After adjusting for age and BMI, there were significant differences among the three glycemic groups for all the cardiovascular risk factors except for total cholesterol level. The diabetic group had a significantly higher WHR and centrality index, but lower femoral fat percentage than the NGT and IGT groups. The diabetic group also showed higher abdominal fat percentage than the NGT group. Moreover, the IGT group had a higher centrality index than the NGT group. However, no significant differences were found in the percentage of lean tissue mass among the three groups. Using multiple stepwise logistic regression models, the centrality index remained a significant factor for discriminating different glucose tolerance status independent of the percentage total body fat. CONCLUSIONS Central obesity has shown significant correlation with cardiovascular risk factors among the three different glycemic groups. Centrality index measured by DEXA appears to be the better predictor of glucose intolerance, compared with WHR, abdominal fat, and general obesity (reflected by percentage total body fat or BMI) in a large cohort of the Chinese population.

Abstract
RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES Ureteric jet index (UJI), a newly developed technique derived from color Doppler ultrasonography, may hold promise in evaluating renal function because of its ability to evaluate individual renal function and the use of nonionizing radiation. To assess the usefulness of UJI, the authors in this study analyzed the relation between UJI and the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). METHODS Fifteen adult patients with a wide range of renal function were included in this study. Subjects were well hydrated before color Doppler ultrasonography examinations. The UJI formula was: Vmean (average jet velocity) x D (jet duration) x F (jet frequency). GFR was calculated by the radionuclide method. Correlations between UJI, serum creatinine, and GFR were analyzed. RESULTS Ureteric jet index had only a fair correlation with GFR. The coefficient of correlation value was 0.61, and the standard error of estimate of GFR was 17.9 mL/min. CONCLUSIONS With the measurement of UJI, color Doppler ultrasound can provide both structural images and individual renal function information. It could substitute for a renal scan in determining individual renal function when a radionuclide examination is unavailable. Even if a renal scan were available, UJI can play a valuable role in the ultrasound examination of patients with suspected impaired renal function, providing further assessment of individual renal function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tissue polypeptide specific antigen (TPS) recently was introduced as an indicator of cell proliferation in various tumors. The authors investigated the value of serum TPS as a complement to alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in the detection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Chinese patients. METHODS Serum TPS and AFP levels were measured by monoclonal immunoradiometric assay in 85 subjects (52 males and 33 females): 26 with HCC, 30 with chronic hepatitis (CH), and 29 healthy controls. RESULTS Patients with HCC had significantly higher TPS levels compared with healthy controls (P < 0.05). However, the difference between the HCC and CH groups was not significant (P = 0.18). The sensitivity and specificity of TPS were 73.1% and 71.2%, respectively, with a cutoff value of 164 U/L for HCC diagnosis. TPS had lower discriminatory power compared with AFP (72.1% vs. 79.2%). In addition, TPS had a much lower specificity compared with AFP (89.1%). Combining the cutoff values for serum TPS and AFP levels in a pessimistic prognostic rule increased the sensitivity by 11.6% from 69.2% using serum AFP levels alone, but reduced the diagnostic power by 3.7% to 75.5% due to an 18.9% decrease in specificity to 70.2%. CONCLUSIONS Using TPS alone offers no advantage over AFP for the diagnosis of HCC in Chinese patients. In conjunction with AFP, TPS reduced the false-negative rate. However, the clinical utility of the combined prognostic rule is limited due to the poor discriminatory power of TPS for HCC and CH. Therefore, the use of serum TPS levels in the detection of HCC is not recommended.
